HENRY BUTLER/STEVEN BERNSTEIN and the HOT 9 - Viper's Drag (Impulse! ; USA) The latest resurrection of the Impulse! imprint begins on the perfect note, with the retro-modern jazz-blues joint Viper's Drag, by co-leaders Henry Butler and Steven Bernstein and their band the Hot 9. "Retro" because they draw on the oldest corners of the jazz tradition, pulling out pieces by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller alongside some Butler originals; "modern" because of the sensibilities with which the veteran New Orleans pianist and singer (Butler) and the iconoclastic trumpeter and bandleader (Bernstein) infuse these nine tunes. Close your eyes and you could be anywhere, anytime: New Orleans circa 1920s, Kansas City circa 1940s, New York circa 2014. On a game-changing arrangement of Waller's "Viper's Drag," which opens the disc, a minute-plus of controlled chaos gives way to an Ellington-influenced segment that segues to a brief stride passage that leads to an early/late New Orleans jazz mash-up and then concludes with a stunning piano solo. The whole band (which features a few of Wynton Marsalis' go-to players, including bassist Reginald Veal and drummer Herlin Riley), personifies the Bayou tradition, past and present, from the second-line stylings of Butler's "Dixie Walker" to his racing-backbeat-driven "Henry's Boogie." Funk, Dixieland and even a touch of salsa thrive alongside one another on an ingenious update of Morton's "Wolverine Blues," and the big-band tradition is renewed with an ever-shifting rhythm on his "King Porter Stomp." Butler's stunning playing gets a good deal of the spotlight, and his soulful vocals (which are not nearly as spectacular as his fingers) take turns on "Buddy Bolden's Blues," "I Left My Baby"- whose intro gets a mild reggae treatment-and "Some Iko," a reworking of "Iko Iko." Bernstein doesn't do much soloing, but his real value here is his arranging, which is at least half the reason this disc is so good: It's steeped in the past, but nothing about it feels old. - Steve Greenlee, JazzTimes

The 20 songs on REBELLUM's debut album "the Darknuss" on their own label, AvantGroidd Musica/Tru Groidd, burst forth a bloody profusion of exotic trace elements--warped soul harmonies, freedom swing horn play, maggot brained guitar implosions and arkestral loopadelics in the dark. REBELLUM's song titles loudly & proudly represent the ranting swoon of their Afro-Futurist insurgency: ''Start Thinking like An Afreakun'', ''The Darknuss'', ''Rock Star Amnesiac'', ''Who's Loving You Now?'', ''Chains & Water / No Coloureds Allowed'', ''There Is A God (The Singularity)''and ''Young Frankenstank''. Just in today, review next week!

THE JAKI BYARD PROJECT [JAMIE BAUM/ADAM KOLKER/JEROME HARRIS/UGONNA OKEGWO/GEORGE SCHULLER] - Yard Byard (GM 3051; USA) This is from Nate Chinen's live review of this project: "Jaki Byard was a jazz pianist of rumbling mastery, quick humor and sprawling erudition, never as prominent as he should have been, though he was hardly unheralded in his time. Since his death in 1999, his legacy has been burnished by some posthumous live recordings and, no less effectively, by the continuing testimony of his students, several generations of whom he mentored in music schools across the Northeast. Yard Byard, which also calls itself the Jaki Byard Project, consists almost entirely of musicians who studied with him at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Formed recently by the flutist Jamie Baum with the drummer George Schuller, it features Adam Kolker on clarinets and tenor saxophone, Jerome Harris on guitar and Ugonna Okegwo on bass. On Wednesday night the group played its third gig, at the Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope. (Its fourth is scheduled for later this month in Manhattan.) The music was all Byard's, played lovingly and a bit loosely, though perhaps not as loosely as it should have been. Most of the songs in the first set were fine examples of standard form gone just slightly haywire. (About half of them overlapped with the track listing on "The Last From Lennie's," a terrific live album from 1965, originally released on Prestige.) "Strolling Along" had Ms. Baum on alto flute and Mr. Kolker on clarinet, playing its soulful melody in unison; it was during their solos that they flirted with irresolution. "Dolphy" - named after one of Byard's kindred spirits, the multireedist Eric Dolphy - was more patently unsettled in its tonality, a 12-bar blues with commitment issues. And in the bridge to "Aluminum Baby," arranged as a rumba of sorts, there was a brief rhythmic hiccup to accompany a restless harmonic turn. The absence of a pianist in the group is good strategy, one way to establish a useful distance from Byard's distinctive sound. Here it created space for Mr. Harris to deploy some oddly gleaming chord voicings and for Mr. Okegwo to abandon rote walking bass lines in favor of roving pointillism. It also exposed the intervallic oddness of some of the songs, as arranged for alto flute and bass clarinet, or flute and tenor saxophone. But without a pianist of the appropriate lineage, the band has no designated mischief maker. Eventually, as the group grows into its clothes, this won't be so much of a problem. Mr. Kolker, for one, could pick up that mantle: his tenor solo on "Dolphy," a casual study in extended harmony, proved as much. Mischief isn't the only side of Byard's music, though, and Ms. Baum, an experienced composer-arranger, has clear perspective on his lyricism. "Toni," a ballad with waltzlike properties, was among the subtler highlights of the set. According to her prescriptions, even "St. Marks Place Among the Sewers," a headlong scramble, came bracketed with free-form improvisation: starkly tentative at the outset, like someone warily scoping out a room, and mock-exhausted at the end, like the throes of a spent wind-up toy." - Nate Chinen, NY Times

TIZIANO TONONI QUARTET [With DANIELE CAVALLANTI/LUCA CALABRESE/SILVIA BOLOGNESI or ANDREA DIBIASE] - The (Cherry Co)mpany (Nubop 11; Italy) Featuring Tiziano Tononi on drums & musical directions, Damiele Cavallanti on tenor sax, Luca Calabrese on trumpet, Silvia Bolognesi on double bass (studio session) and Andrea DiBiase on double bass (live session). Both Mr. Tononi and Mr. Cavallanti have worked together on more than a dozen discs from duo to large collaborations like their old ensemble Nexus. I've seen trumpeter Luca Calabrese's name a number of times over the past few years with folks like Giovanni Maier and Giancarlo Schiaffini. Ms. Bolognesi is a fine young bassist who has been working with Sabir Mateen, a fine trio with Mazz Swift & Tomeka Reid as well as her own large ensemble. This disc is a tribute to the late trumpet master Don Cherry and all but two songs were written by Mr. Cherry. The other two songs were composed by two musicians who worked with Cherry: Ed Blackwell and Carlos Ward. Mr. Tononi has done several tributes in the past as well to Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane and an older one to Don Cherry as well. All of those were wonderful so I expected as much from this one and was knocked out once again. There are a strong selection of Cherry's songs from across his long career. The theme to "Complete Communion" opens and closes this disc in an earthy, righteous way that feels so good. Both Cavallanti's tenor and Calabrese's trumpet sound perfect as the frontline for this superb quartet. There was always a magical way that Mr. Cherry and Mr. Coleman played together, tossing ideas back and forth seemingly effortless and often inexplicable. Although Cavallanti plays tenor (instead of the alto that Ornette played), there is a similar (magical) comradery that the tenor and trumpet have here when they play together. Mr. Cherry himself for his three albums for Blue Note in the late sixties (which include 'Complete Communion'), to use the tenor work of Pharoah Sanders or Gato Barbieri, so these sessions appear to be partially inspired by those sax giants. This disc features half studio and half live sessions and both are great! The personnel is the same except for the bassist, both of whom are strong players. The live portion, which kicks off with "Cherryco" is even more vibrant and spirited. Besides being a gifted trumpeter and composer, Mr. Cherry was also a world travelling ambassador of sorts who learned traditional music from around the world. This universal whole earth vibe is also at the center of this music, which is one of the things which unites and inspires the musicians here. Ed Blackwell's song "Togo" is given a fine rendition here complete with a superb Blackwell-like drum solo. We got just 10 of these gems but hope to get more soon from our friend Aki in Italy. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

AGUSTI FERNANDEZ/ILAN MANOUACH/IVO SANS - Wry (Clamshell 13; Spain) 'Wry" is magnificent in its own right, an album fully in the European free improv "tradition", with in-the-moment co-creation of intimate and harsh, gentle and unsuspected developments, intense interaction and an endless yearning for authentic purity. Ilan Manouch plays soprano sax and Ivo Sans drums. Some tracks, such as the second, "43-49", sound like joint digging into sound, full of hard effort and labor, to come up with just a few nuggets of sound, but worth it, while "36-42" has a kind of high fluttering of rapid speed little sounds, intense, like colibris moving their wings yet going nowhere at all, and "92-98" is built around silence, with the anticipation of evil creeping into the watchers of a horror movie when unknown sounds with a deep moaning quality sneak forward, unseen. It is restraint, contained, coherent yet hard and almost merciless, with a tension that never leaves the entire performance of short snaps and percussive hits and notes that hurt and sooth. Fascinating listening. - FreeJazzStef

Back in stock after a couple of months:

AGUSTI FERNANDEZ & MATS GUSTAFSSON - Constellations (Clamshell 23; Spain) Featuring Agusti Fernandez on piano & prepared piano and Mats Gustafsson on soprano & bari saxes. Last week (June 3rd-8th, 2014), Joe Morris was in residency at The Stone and had his friend Agusti Fernandez play piano every second set throughout the week. I caught three of these sets and was knocked out by each performance, no matter who the personnel was. Mr. Fernandez left me with a couple of his newer discs, a solo and a duo effort and both are superb. No doubt you are familiar with the great saxist Mats Gustafsson who is a member of the Thing and who has long collaborated with Ken Vandermark, Peter Brotzmann and many others. What is interesting about this disc is that Mr. Gustafsson is known for blowing hard and heavy in most of his projects but here concentrates with a bit less volume but still goes the length with Fernandez. Agusti has been working inside the piano with wooden blocks and other material to change the sound of the strings and has become a master of these sonic manipulations. Oddly enough, Gustafsson sounds quite a bit like Evan Parker on soprano, playing those twisted lines which sound wonderful with Fernandez' equally fractured lines. Both of these men are master players and sound strong whether playing reflectively and going into the intense freer regions. This is an incredible duo on several levels. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG CD $16

D'ISTANTE3 [BLAISE SIWUAL/LUCIANO TROJA/GIANCARLO MAZZO] - Sometimes The Journey is a Vision (NoFrillsMusic 005; USA) Featuring Blaise Siwula on alto & tenor sax & clarinet, Luciano Troja on piano and Giancarlo Mazzu on guitar, drums and vocals. One of the things I've most admired about Blaise Siwula is his long journey of improvising with hundreds of musicians from around the world due to his continued weekly series at ABC NoRIO on Rivington St, just one subway stop (on the F train) at Delancey St., very far from DMG. Besides this series, Blaise has done some touring and playing with a wealth of improvisers from around the world. This is the second disc from D'istante3 and the other tow Italian musicians have previous discs on the Splasch and Slam labels. The first piece is a low key one for subdued tenor sax, somber piano and occasional bluesy slide guitar. Both Italians seem to bring out a more melodic, playful side to Mr. Siwula's improv. His clarinet sound especially charming on a few of these pieces. Even the freer parts here have a more relaxed vibe which sounds quietly engaging. Here's an obscure reference point for you geezers: the title of the second track, "Ginger is Her Name" comes from the theme song to 'Gilligan's Island', a sixties TV show that many of us seniors remember fondly. Each of these pieces unfold organically and this trio does work together splendidly, always telling a story. There are a few times when they sound as if they about to break into a jazz standard of some sort but rarely actually get there. This is improv at it most charming. Strange but true. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG CD $10

MERIDA ENCUENTRO [BLAISE SIWULA/ARMANDO MARTIN/EDGAR CAAMAL + ALVAR CANTO TORRES] - "Merida Swings" (In 7 Parts) (NoFrillsMusic 004; USA) Featuring Blaise Siwula on clarinet & alto sax, Armando Martin on acoustic & electric guitars and Edgar Caamal on drums & percussion plus Alvar Canto Torres on electric guitar (1 track). Once again Blaise Siwula hooks up with little known musicians, this time from Mexico where this disc was recorded. As time goes on I become that music is the universal language which speaks to anyone who listens intently. Improvised music, even moreso, seems to cross all borders or barriers so that musicians who can speak the same verbal (word oriented) language can still communicate to those who can speak through their instruments. The title of this disc and project is Merida, which is also the name of the town where it was recorded. The music here is an immensely focused trio of (mostly) acoustic guitar, clarinet or alto sax and percussion. The guitarist at times sounds like Dr. Chadbourne but not as frenetic or silly. This disc is cleanly recorded with warm, well-balanced sound. One of the thing I like about this disc is it is not too far out, very few weird noises or extended technique weirdness. Eventually, Mr. Martin switches to electric guitar and the trio do go a bit further out and free yet remain focused. Eventually, the playing gets more animated, like a spirited conversation. Ideas flow back and forth and things get even more interesting. It almost gets brutal towards the end when a second guitarist adds to the darker currents. This is indeed a strong way to conclude this consistently fascinating improv session. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

WIELAND MOLLER With ROBERT BOSTON/NICOLAS LETMAN-BURTINOVICH - Akvariet (Little Lake Records 004; EEC) Featuring Robert Boston on piano, Nicolas Letman-Burtonovic on bass and Wieland Moller on drums. Bassist Nico Letman-Burtinovic has played here at DMG perhaps a half dozen times in the past few years with a wide assortment of players (Guillermo Gregorio, Cheryl Pyle & Red Microphone). Nico has also left us with a handful of discs from various projects including musicians from Montreal and the current Downtown Scene. The pianist on this disc, Robert Boston, has recorded with the Core Trio who are led by Texas-based bassist Thomas Helton. I don't recognize the name of the drummer though although he appears to be the leader on this disc. All of the pieces on this disc are improvised and often relatively short (all but one under six minutes). It is hard to tell that these are improvisations since there seems to be some structure or a logic to the way things work or unfold. A few of these pieces have that early Bill Evans Trio like elegance that still feels just right. There also a few explosive moments as well so that we never know where the trio will end up although nothing goes on for too long. It does sound like this trio has been playing together for a long time since much of what they do is so focused or well thought out sounding.

Two New Ones from the Fine Folks at MoonJune Due in Stock Early Next Week:

MORAINE [DENNIS REA/ALICIA DeJOIE/JAMES DeJOIE/KEVIN MILLARD/TOM ZGONC] - Groundswell (MoonJune 66; USA) Moraine's most recent metamorphosis highlights their reoccurring theme of unbridled invention - undeterred by convention and delivered convincingly, with abandon! Brushing all preconception aside, Dennis Rea and company courageously initiate proceedings from a place to which most modern progressive bands can only dream of ascending. Featuring a host of engaging new originals as well as pieces written for the band by composers Daniel Barry and Jon Davis, Groundswell is certain to cement the band's standing as a singular voice like no other in the modern progressive jazz-rock continuum. Building on the momentum generated by their previous releases for MoonJune Records, Moraine draws from the more exotic facets of the avant garde equation. Their critically-heralded debut, 2009's manifest deNsity and 2012's more than convincing follow-up, Metamorphic Rock: Live at NEARfest, are albums which garnered hundreds of glowing reviews worldwide - earning the band a diverse following, ranging from jazz aficionados, to metalheads, to world-music enthusiasts, and beyond. Moments of "early-Crimsonesque" intensity are often balanced out by a more Eastern approach to melody, arrangement and ensemble delivery; the music is delightfully fresh and unpredictable throughout. Brilliant compositions decorated by powerful themes, sudden shifts, sensitive group dynamics and fiery solo excursions dominate this session, as Moraine reveals a more psychodelic vibe, while remaining collectively and steadfastly plugged into the magic of the moment at hand. Lovers of the best offerings from the RIO, classic fusion, prog-rock, avant-garde, progressive jazz, free jazz and Eastern music genres will all find plenty to sink their teeth into here, but that only starts to penetrate the surface of this delectable amalgamation. All of the band's components -- leader/guitarist Dennis Rea; violinist Alicia DeJoie; sax/flutist James DeJoie; bassist Kevin Millard, and; the band's newest addition, seasoned veteran drummer Tom Zgonc - are in peak form and deliver the sonic goods in highly-inspired fashion on this very special outing. Groundswell is to be one of the most ambitious, far-reaching albums from the progressive genre this year. This is "brave new avant=progressive-fusion" ... as it's title might infer, this one is destined to leave a mark!

MARBIN - Third Set (MoonJune 65; USA) What does a band that has performed over 800 shows over the last three years do for an encore? Recording a scorching, balls-to-the-wall, three-alarm live album feels like a natural progression! Without question, one of the hardest-working, most motivated and driven independent bands in the world today, Marbin's The Third Set is a testimony to both that synonymous work ethic, as well as to the depth of musical diction, styles and textures these young gentlemen have achieved. Beyond that, it's a bone-crushing, no-holds-barred, sonic feeding frenzy!! "The two Danny's" (Dani Rabin on guitar and Danny Markovitch on sax) take a sizzling set of their best material to new heights and an unparalleled intensity: capturing facets of their style, sound and group interaction as only a smokin' live performance possibly could! Ever the musical chameleons, Marbin continues to expand their horizons -- pushing their music to the absolute limit, while keeping the accelerator pressed firmly to the floor! Both founders, Rabin and Markovitch, show more-than-ample evidence of the fire that burns in them both. Rabin's chops have never been more hard-hitting, emotional and convincing; with blazing legatos lines alternately punctuating proceedings with Beck-like melodic phrasings and sweet chord comp work, Dani's many hours of off-stage preparation and sustained musical growth are clearly in evidence. Markovitch plays with more fervor than ever before, with his perfectly-interspersed and -articulated lines weaving their magic throughout. The band never sounded tighter or more on top of their game. (... who said "playing with fire" was a bad thing?) The Third Set is the next step forward in the evolution of Marbin, as today's prodigies transform into tomorrow's progressive luminaries. Fasten your seat belts for this one, kids: it hugs the tight corners while refusing to ease off the gas!!

WHITE HILLS - Glitter Glamour Atrocity (Thrill Jockey 377; USA) "Glitter Glamour Atrocity is a snapshot of the band in the midst of an incredible burst of creativity, and was recorded during the same sessions that produced Heads on Fire and Abstractions & Mutations. Sonically, it is radically different from anything else coming out of the New York underground at the time, and it set the template for the singular concoction of heavy psychedelic music, krautrock, and a worship of pure sound they have explored in different variations ever since. Throughout the album the band explores themes of greed, misinformation, war, hypocrisy and their outcomes within the world's political and economic systems, presenting these weighty topics with the same air of mystic understanding that underpins their music."

BUREAU OF ATOMIC TOURISM [TEUN VERBRUGGEN/ANDREW D'ANGELO/NATE WOOLEY/MARC DUCRET/ et al] - 'Spinning Jenny' [LTD Ed & numbered] (RAT Records; EEC) Featuring: Andrew d'Angelo on sax & bass clarinet; Nate Wooley on trumpet; Marc Ducret on guitar; Jasper Stadhouders on bass; Jozef Dumoulin on Fender Rhodes and Teun Verbruggen on drums, percussion, laptop & direction. This is the second disc from the ace drummer & multi-project leader Teun Verbruggen's swell all-star band with a ridiculously cool name Bureau of Atomic Tourism. Mr. Verbruggen is also the drummer of the Dutch progressive band Flat Earth Society, one of the best medium sized bands to emerge from Europe over the past decade plus. This disc was recorded live and most of the members of the band except for Teun contributed all original compositions: Ducret (3), Wooley (1), D'Angelo (1) and Dumoulin (1). You recognize all of the names here as all have been part of previously reviewed projects. Mr. Stadhouders plays with the Amsterdam-based Cactus Truck Trio and Mr. Dumoulin is on several discs on the Bee Jazz label out of France as both a leader and sideman. Nate Wooley's "Back to My Steel" starts things off with some intense free swirling horns and guitar. Considering that is the second time (or tour) that this sextet has worked together, they sound impressive nonetheless: tight, spirited and often quite intense. Besides being one the hottest electric guitarists in Europe, Mr. Ducret has become and excellent composer and bandleader. Ducret wrote three of the six pieces here and each one is great. He seems to favor writing complex works that are most demanding to play. I still hear some Zappa influence his writing at times which always makes me smile. Mr. Dumoulin wrote the somewhat more calm song called "19" which features one of the furious paced yet completely in control solos from Mr. Wooley over somber waves provided by the guitar and electric piano. Mr. D'Angelo has the longest piece here, an epic at 24 & 1/2 minutes and it is something special. Although it starts out quietly simmering, it soon breaks into a powerful jazz/rock repeating groove which builds up and then dies down with a few fine solos from the guitar and alto sax. This entire 65+ minute disc is fabulous throughout its entire length. Plus this disc is limited, numbered and comes in a 6'"x 6" plastic cover. Don't miss out before they disappear for good. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

EDDIE PREVOST/JENNIFER ALLUM/UTE KANNGIESSER/GRUNDIK KASYANSKY/DIMTRA LAZZARIDOU/DAICHI YOSHIKAWA - Workshop Concert at Cafe Oto (Matchless 87; UK) In 1999 AMM percussionist Eddie Prevost founded what was to become a long-running weekly workshop in improvisation in London. After its move to the Cafe Oto, the series instituted a monthly workshop concert. This CD captures the workshop concert that took place on Monday 21 May 2012, curated by Seymour Wright. Wright invited a sextet of musicians which, in addition to Prevost on percussion, included Jennifer Allum on violin, Ute Kanngiesser on cello, Grundik Kasyansky on theramin and electronics, Dimitra Lazaridou-Chatzigoga on zither, and Daichi Yoshikawa on electronics. Aside from Eddie Prevost, founding member of AMM & Matchless Records as well as one of the world's leading improvising percussionists, I know very little about the five members of this workshop ensemble. I do recognize Ms. Allum from a few other discs on the Matchless label, including a duo with Mr. Prevost. I have also met Ms. Lazaridou-Chatzigoga when she visited DMG on a couple of occasions and have heard a fine duo disc she has on the Another Timbre label. I listened to this disc with DMG mailorder madman/saxist Chris Pitsiokos last week and we were both quite impressed. Mr. Provost's ongoing series of workshops/concerts has continually nurtured the ever-evolving London scene, the proof is in the pudding and this is a mighty fine dessert. The first piece is a long (34 minutes) series of duets which show how well these musicians listen and work together. It is hard to tell who is doing what here as they use some extended techniques to create their strange sounds. After the series of duets, we get another series of trios, which also show how ell these players work together. If you want to hear some new improvisers coming up with new sounds and combinations, this is the disc for you. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

JASON YARDE/OLI HAYHURST/EDDIE PREVOST - Meetings With Remarkable Saxophonists Volume 3 (Matchless 86; UK) Featuring Jason Yarde on alto & soprano saxes, Oli Hayhurst on double bass and Eddie Prevost on drums. Matchless has just released the third and fourth volumes of their series: 'Meetings with Remarkable Saxists'. Volume 3 features Jason Yarde on saxes and Oli Hayhurst on bass. We've heard from Jason Yarde over the past few years since he has recorded three CDs with Louis Moholo plus he has worked with Chris Abahams from District 6 as well as with Roberto Bellatalla for Slam. I hadn't heard much from bassist Oli Hayhurst except for one disc from Gerd Dudek on the PSI label. This disc was recorded live at the Network Theatre in Waterloo, London in August of 2011 and the sound is superb. Although Mr. Yarde has played somewhat more inside with South African drum legend, Moholo, here he goes further out. I dig the way this disc/set evolves, giving all three members a chance to slowly stretch out. Mr. Prevost takes the first solo with mallets on his drums and shows that he a master of cerebral/propulsive percussion. Bassist Hayhurst eventually enters as the duo ascends together nicely. Mr. Yarde starts to play this repeating figure, over and over, bending it slightly each time. The trio launches into a hard swinging section as the come together and hit their stride, burning hotter as they go. Although this series is called, 'Meeting with Remarkable Saxists', it is actually Mr. Prevost who is the most remarkable. His playing consistently matches and engages whoever he works with. Each of the five saxists (including a recent trio with Evan Parker) with whom he has recently worked have risen to the occasion and played better than ever. I can't wait to check out the trio with Hubbub saxist Bertrand Denzler next. No doubt, another treasure from the consistently great Matchless catalogue. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MIVROS QUARTET - Reappearances (Carrier 18; USA) It's surprising that Reappearances is the first full recording under Mivos Quartet's name as the group has been active since 2008 and has built a strong reputation well beyond its New York base. In the new music world, Mivos has performed works by Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm and Tristan Perich, which shows them to be pretty well adventurous, while also venturing into more improvised settings with the likes of Ned Rothenberg, Chris Speed and Nate Wooley. (Their 2012 recording with Wooley of Bojan Vuletic's Atemwende on Ignoring Gravity Music is well worth seeking out, as is the quartet's cellist Mariel Robert's debut recording nonextranneous sounds, released by Innova also in 2012.) Reappearances appears on Carrier Records, the label run by composer and electronicist Sam Pluta, whose work Mivos has also performed. Here we get four dynamic compositions in a digestible program that clocks in at under an hour. Alex Mincek's String Quartet No. 3, lift-tilt-filter-split (2009-2010) runs through an array of scenarios while retaining a firm grounding in rich soil; It manages to have a wide reach without wandering. Wolfgang Rihm's beautiful Quartettstudie (2003-4) is the highlight of the disc, referencing the icy romanticism of the Second Viennese School in a single movement of beautifully interlocking lines. David Brynjar Franzson's on Repetition and Reappearances (2011-2012) is more open-ended, playing with dynamic while allowing the performers to respond to each other. It makes for a nice break in the proceedings before Felipe Lara's Corde Vocale (2005) casts bold lines while exploring the differences in sound between the English language and the composer's native Portuguese. Like a good concert program, Mivos's debut is diverse and coherent in equal measures, thought-provoking and enjoyable as well. - Kurt Gottschalk

AARON EINBOND/ENSEMBLE DAL NIENTE - Without Words (Carrier 20; USA) Over five years and two dozen releases, Sam Pluta's Carrier Records has proved to be a reliable outpost for worthy music from lesser known composers and ensembles - not the least of which is Pluta's own work and the fantastic recordings by the Wet Ink Ensemble, of which he is a member. Pluta may have found a kindred spirit in Chicago's Ensemble Dal Niente. While the 20-piece ensemble is bigger in ranks than Wet Ink, it has a similar flexibility and a sister soprano in Amanda DeBoer Bartlett, whose whispers and trills on the title track of Without Words bring to mind the singing of Wet Ink's gifted Kate Soper. That piece makes an exciting opening for an unusual album of compositions by the New York-based Aaron Einbond. Layers of voice, both DeBoer's and processed samples, mix with deep saxophone tones played by Ryan Muncy to create an atmosphere altogether otherworldly that leaves the other 10 instruments on the piece far off in the distance. Muncy is put even more directly in the spotlight (or is it under the interrogation light?) in Break, which finds the sound of his baritone being processed almost in opposition to him. Between the two lies Post Paleontology for contrabass clarinet, violin, guitar, percussion and piano. It is here that the composer brings the ensemble closest to the overlapping circle of open-ended improvisation. It's spacious, a bit noisy and beautifully recorded. Each of those pieces is around a quarter hour, and between them lies a mix of brief, complimentary studies, like peripheral thoughts. The pairing of Einbond and Dal Niente seems one of mutual admiration and benefit, resulting in a record of remarkable abstractions. - Kurt Gottschalk

SU WAI - Gita Pon Yeik (Little Axe LA 11; USA) "Su Wai is a modern virtuoso of the ancient Saung Gauk, a Burmese harp instrument of both royal and religious significance (fashioned to resemble a leaf of the bo tree which the Buddha attained enlightenment beneath) with roots as far back as the 6th century. In this collection of 8 traditional poem-songs, Wai unfurls clusters of melodic lines alongside a cyclical bell chime-pulse to accompany texts drawn from the Mahagita, a collection of 500 court songs not unlike the British Isle's Child Ballads. Recorded in masterful fidelity by Burmese ethnomusicologist Rick Heizman (White Elephants and Golden Ducks, Green Tea Leaf Salad) and presented here for the first time on vinyl, Gita Pon Yeik offers a small window into a tragically under-documented royal tradition that sits comfortably next to both ethnomusicological documents and abstract avant-garde folk forms."

Rare LP Reissues & Archival Vinyl Recordings:

FRED KATZ WITH PAUL HORN and THE CHICO HAMILTON QUARTET - Zen: The Music of Fred Katz (So Far Out 5016; Italy) Credited with introducing the cello to jazz, Fred Katz had an illustrious and varied career in music -- performing with the legendary Chico Hamilton groups of the 1950s, scoring films for Hollywood, teaching ethnomusicology, and working as an A&R director for Decca and Pacific Jazz. This 1957 release is one of his first LPs as a leader, and is heavily influenced by his recent conversion to Zen Buddhism. Featuring help from Chico Hamilton on drums and Paul Horn on flute and clarinet, Zen: The Music of Fred Katz is an extraordinary journey: the Orient filtered through a cool jazz foundation with stunning performances all around. A 1950s West Coast jazz classic reissued on 180 gram vinyl.
LP $28

BILL EVANS/JIM HALL - Undercurrent (Doxy ACV 2008; Russian Federation) If Bill Evans brought a kind of muted, ingeniously subtle body of innovations to jazz piano, then perhaps his only parallel in the realm of jazz guitar is Jim Hall. When they joined forces for this session, they sounded fantastic, with piano and jazz falling together into a pool of streaming improvisation on mostly slow-tempo pieces. The pair hit such a high mark with this recording that it reaches the intellect and the emotions at precisely the same instant. Limited edition vinyl with ACV (Audiophile Clear Vinyl) quality. Includes two bonus tracks: "Stairway to the Stars" and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You." Housed in a gatefold sleeve.
LP $24

JOHN COLTRANE - Coltrane (DOXY ACV 2009; Russian Federation) This 1962 album found John Coltrane teetering back and forth between what would eventually come to dominate his musical mindset (free improvisation as a compositional tool) and the accessible melodic and rhythmic structures of hard bop. "After repeated listening to this album I felt that any comments here would be unnecessary. After all, John Coltrane and his men have something to say musically and the true jazz lovers will understand the music without detailed explanation. There is no need for album notes on the merits of 'Trane''s music... there will be plenty of accolades given in newspapers and magazines about the virtues of this album." --Bob Thiele, original liner notes; Limited edition vinyl with ACV (Audiophile Clear Vinyl) quality.
LP $24

THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET WITH GIL EVANS ORCHESTRA - At Carnegie Hall (Doxy 4003; Russian Federation) Despite a performing career that stretched from the 1940s through the early 1990s, trumpet legend Miles Davis appeared at Carnegie Hall fewer than 10 times. The concert on May 19, 1961 -- a benefit for the African Research Foundation -- came in the middle of that run and saw Davis performing with a small combo that featured Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb along with the Gil Evans Orchestra -- one of only two times they performed together. Aside from the fact that Davis withdrew his permission to record the event at the last minute (which led to the concert being surreptitiously captured by producer Teo Macero), there was further incident on stage. As reported on milesdavis.com, "[Drummer] Max Roach [who was not performing that night] displayed placards on stage denouncing the colonial character of the African Research Foundation. Miles left the stage. Persuaded to return, he showed his anger in the fire and blood he brought to 'Oleo' before gradually calming down for the grand finale of 'Concierto de Aranjuez.'" --from the Carnegie Hall Official Website; A numbered limited edition of 500 copies pressed on Audiophile Clear Vinyl.
2 LP Set $30

MILES DAVIS - Sketches of Spain (Doxy 904; Russian Federation) "For 1960's Sketches Of Spain, Davis pairs up with composer Gil Evans and a 19-piece band to produce what has been called one of the most difficult scores in jazz music. But Davis makes even the most difficult of music sound absolutely effortless, presenting some of the most dramatic and breathtakingly brooding solos of his career. Said one critic: 'It is as if Miles had been born of Andalusian gypsies but, instead of picking up the guitar, had decided to make a trumpet the expression of his cante hondo (deep song).'" 180 gram, audiophile virgin vinyl. Direct metal mastering. Presented at 45 rpm.
LP $28

THE GIL EVANS ORCHESTRA - Out of the Cool (Doxy DOG 901; Russian Federation) "Originally released in 1960, this album is widely considered to be Evans' masterpiece, on par with Duke Ellington in terms of orchestration, and essential listening for any jazz fan. Evans had spent the previous few years recording with Miles Davis on such acclaimed works as Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess and Sketches Of Spain, a collaboration which proved to be extremely enriching for both men. This LP was Evans' first post-Miles recording, and the album's title, Out Of The Cool, is an obvious nod to that fact (a play on Davis' own Birth Of The Cool). The album showcases two significant Evans compositions, the groundbreaking 'La Nevada' and 'Sunken Treasure.'" Remastered and pressed on 180 gram audiophile DMM HQ virgin vinyl, 45 rpm.
LP $28

STAN GETZ With LAURINDO ALMEIDA - Stan Getz with Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida (Doxy 2026; Russian Federation) Continuing his practice of running through one star guitarist after another, this time Stan Getz has Laurindo Almeida as the designated rhythm man, featured composer, and solo foil. On this 1963 release, the rhythm section is an authentically swinging mixture of American sidemen (including Steve Kuhn on piano and George Duvivier on bass) and Brazilian percussionists. Almeida didn't like to improvise, so his solos stay close to the tunes, inflected with a perfectly matched feeling for the groove along with classical poise. Jobim's "Outra Vez" is a particularly lovely example of Getz's freedom and effortless lyricism contrasted against Almeida's anchored embroidering. Sessions like these might have been seen as cashing in on the boom at the time, yet in the long view, one should be thankful that these musicians were recording so much cherishable material. A numbered limited edition of 500 copies pressed on Audiophile Clear Vinyl (ACV).
LP $24

NINA SIMONE - At Carnegie Hall [2 LP Set] (Doxy 4002; Russian Federation) "On May 12, 1963, Miss Simone gave her first concert in Carnegie Hall. Her impeccable piano mastery and her distinctive vocal stylings thrilled those present in the famed landmark of musical events (...) From her vast repertoire, including many numbers that have become 'her' songs, either because she introduced them or because she had recorded the definitive version, Miss Simone compiled an exceptional program for her Carnegie Hall concert. Some of the numbers in this album have been done on disks before, but none have ever sounded as well." --from the original liner notes; The COMPLETE Nina Simone at Carnegie Hall double LP in ACV (Audiophile Clear Vinyl) quality with an exceptional number of bonus tracks (side 3 and side 4).
2 LP Set $30

BILLIE HOLIDAY - Billie's Blues (Doxy ACV 2006; Russian Federation) From the original show announcement: "I am very proud to present now the singing star of our show. Her voice is the voice of jazz; a voice that cannot be imitated, that has become known throughout the world through a hundred celebrated records. She will be accompanied by Carl Drinkard on piano, Elaine Leighton on drums and Red Mitchell on bass. Ladies and gentlemen, the great Lady Day, Miss Billie Holiday!" "This album offers a potent reminder, drawn from three sources, of the Lady during those magic years, the 1940s and early 1950s, just before her lifestyle took its toll irrevocably. The live tracks were taped at a concert during the European tour, Billie's first (and, as it turned out, only) tour of the Continent." --from the original liner notes; A numbered limited edition of 500 copies pressed .
LP $24

DJANGO REINHARDT - Plays Gershwin & Ellington (Doxy ACV 2007; Russian Federation) Django Reinhardt has never recorded a songbook, but in the course of his career has often played the songs of some key authors in the history of jazz, sometimes recording them only once, sometimes including them in his live repertoire. In this LP you can find his recordings of songs by George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. A numbered limited edition of 500 copies pressed on Audiophile Clear Vinyl (ACV).
LP $24

SERGE GAINSBOURG -Du jazz dans le ravin (Doxy ACV 2004; Russian Federation) Serge Gainsbourg, the original bad-boy of French pop, the man who updated the French chanson and made it hip again, infusing it with the youth culture of the late '50s and '60s, ruled by jazz, drugs and free love. Very different from his celebrated later works, the music captured on this limited edition vinyl finds Gainsbourg mixing traditional chanson and big-band jazz rather than the avant-garde pop that went on to define his career outside of France. This record presents a revealing insight into the early years of this iconic figure. Limited edition vinyl with ACV (Audiophile Clear Vinyl) quality.
LP $24

JORGE BEN - Samba Esquema Novo (Doxy DOK 225; Russian Federation) Jorge Ben's first full-length record, this 1963 release contains the hit singles "Mas Que Nada" and "Chove Chuva" and typifies the light yet propulsive rhythms that afforded Ben a decades-long career in Brazilian pop. Not yet pared down to the more rock and Afro percussive-driven sound he eventually developed, Samba Esquema Novo (trans. "New Style Samba") is replete with swirling bossa nova rhythms and soaring choruses. Its big-band-style accompaniment, nicely off-set by Ben's signature minor-tone guitar workings, propels the set into an upbeat and enjoyable listen. LP contains the full album on CD.

IF YOU'RE ALREADY SUBSCRIBED TO OUR NEWSLETTER, BUT SOMEHOW YOU'RE NOT RECEIVING THEM IN YOUR INBOX..

Many of your incoming emails are being blocked and you don't know it! Many emails like our newsletter are frequently blocked by aggressive spam filters being used by nearly all email services.

To help avoid this problem and get our newsletter:

Hotmail Users: Place the domain " downtownmusicgallery.com " on your Safe List, so that you can receive our emails. The safe list can be accessed via the "Options" link next to the main menu tabs. Also place the email address dmg@downtownmusicgallery.com in your address book.

Yahoo! Mail: If one of our e-newsletters is filtered to your 'bulk' folder, open the message and click on the "this is not Spam" link next to the "From" field. The same goes for any other e-mail you receive that doesn't belong there. Add the address dmg@downtownmusicgallery.com to your address book.

Other email services [Earthlink, GMail et al]: Place the domain " downtownmusicgallery.com " on your email filter's whitelist. You may need to search your email help menu for details on how to do this. Depending on software/version, they may call it a "whitelist," a "good list" or similar name. Adding the address dmg@downtownmusicgallery.com to your address book will help too.

AOL: IF YOU HAVE AN AOL MAIL ACCOUNT, GET RID OF IT!
They block senders WITHOUT the consent of the user, and recently virtually all of our AOL newsletter subscribers have not been able to receive it, and attempts to whitelist us have failed! WE RECOMMEND you get a GMAIL or YAHOO account, and switch over!
