JOEY BARON With BILL FRISELL - Just Listen [Ltd Ed of 200 with Bonus DVD] (Relative Pitch 1001 LTD; USA) Featuring the one & only Joey Baron on drums and the amazing Bill Frisell on guitar! In the last couple of years, despite the current depression and disintegration of the record industry, the ever-evolving Relative Pitch label has come out swinging, ready to knock us all out! With a dozen discs under their belt, they have presented an incredibly diverse and challenging cast of powerful sessions. They have outdone themselves with this new one: None other than everyone's favorite drummer Joey Baron and his longtime collaborator Bill Frisell. These two have been playing together for nearly three decades in quartets and trios as well as in Naked City and other John Zorn sessions. Their duo gigs are very rare but I have seen one at The Stone and it was wonderful. Whether playing in Masada in the nineties or playing with the Joe Lovano/Dave Douglas band last week, everyone seems to agree that there is no other drummer quite like Joey Baron. His presence in any band pushed them higher than usual. He also lights a fire under Mr. Frisell's tush here and Bill delivers the goods. This is one of the best duo efforts we've heard in a long while so don't walk, run to get your copy ASAP!
There is a FREE bonus DVD-R of the duo's live gig in Bonn, Germany 2008, that will be included with up to the first 200 copies ONLY, BUT YOU MUST PRE-ORDER to get it. Do not delay, order yours today! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

RANDY FREDRIX TRIO With BILL LASWELL/JERRY MAROTTA + TONY LEVIN/TOM ROSATO - True (Ran 333; USA) Featuring Randy Fredrix on guitar, and vocals on some of the tracks, Bill Laswell on bass and Jerry Marotta on drums; with Tony Levin or Tom Rosato on bass or stick for one track each. Practically every day that I work at DMG, something surprising happens as far as a new musical discovery. The head of this label just left us with a new disc which includes our main man Bill Laswell, electric bassist supreme. What is surprising is that I hadn't heard of the leader, Randy Fredrix before this disc arrived. You should recognize the names of Jerry Marotta and Tony Levin [from King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, et al], both of whom are well-regarded session musicians.
Mr. Fredrix wrote half of the songs here, the rest are trio improvs plus one short cover track. The ghost of Jimi Hendrix is somewhere at the center of this disc. "Weatherman" features layers of dreamy Hendrix-like guitars with spacy voices floating and a fine, hypnotic bass groove from Mr. Laswell. "Julia" features more layers of eerie guitars, laid back and mesmerizing. I dig Mr. Fredix's refreshing voice which is somewhere in between Curtis Mayfield and Prince. It is especially soulful in an unassuming way, never rising above a slow simmer. At times, Mr Fredix reminds me of Elliott Sharp on guitar, occasionally tapping and/or adding some select bluesy notes. What is listed as a trio composition is not just an improv but a song which was born while jamming with strong riffs and sensuous vocals. Jerry Marotta is a swell slamming drummer and often at the center of some of these songs. I am reminded at times of the great Golden Palominos rhythm team (originally Laswell & Anton Fier) so it seems as if this project is an extension of that spirit. Bill's bass is both infectious and in-the -pocket, providing another central groove aspect to what makes this work so well. The one cover tune here is a short version of "Crossroads" (written by Robert Johnson & made famous by Cream) which sounds more like the Residents, something you would never expect. Some of these tracks were cut at Dreamland Studios which sounds about right since this feels more like a good dream than the harsh reality that were live in. Add the name of Randy Fredix to that long list of under-recognized guitar greats. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

Five New Big Ones on Clean Feed!

MARK DRESSER with RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA/MICHAEL DESSEN/DENMAN MARONEY /TOM RAINEY or MICHAEL SARIN - Nourishments (Clean Feed 279; Portugal) Rudresh Mahanthappa - alto sax, Michael Dessen - trombone, Denman Maroney - hyperpiano, Mark Dresser - double bass and Tom Rainey drums (1, 2, 3, 5) or Michael Sarin on drums (4, 6, 7). A singularly accomplished bass innovator in the fields of jazz, free improvisation and new music, Mark Dresser has devoted himself in recent years to pushing the capacities of solo bass performance even further. In Nourishments, his first quintet recording in almost two decades, he shifts his attention back to another longtime creative commitment, ensemble exploration with a team of master improvisers possessing unmistakable sounds. Featuring Rudresh Mahanthappa, Michael Dessen, Denman Maroney, and, in turns, Tom Rainey or Michael Sarin--all leaders in their own right and players deeply versed in Dresser's music--the quintet delves headlong into his richly suggestive compositions. More than anything, Dresser creates vehicles for beautifully modulated interaction via counterpoint, cyclical organization, timbre sculpting, and all the unexpected combinations of pitch and noise or meter and texture. He developed several pieces with trombonist Michael Dessen while they were in different cities through telematics, fiber optic-facilitated remote performances that have opened up new astounding new possibilities for international collaborations. By whatever means, Nourishments is the work of artists who connect musically, emotionally and intellectually with unusual power and grace. This is it!

TRUMPETS AND DRUMS [PETER EVANS/NATE WOOLEY/JIM BLACK/PAUL LYTTON] - Live in Ljubljana (Clean Feed 282; Portugal) Featuring: Nate Wooley - trumpet & amplifier, Peter Evans - trumpet & piccolo trumpet, Jim Black- drums & electronics and Paul Lytton - drums and percussion. The trumpeters, Nate Wooley and Peter Evans, are used to playing together, but it's a first finding such different drummers (one a natural born rhythmicist, the other an architect of textures) as Jim Black and Paul Lytton playing together. Wooley has a duo with Lytton, and Evans worked with the two men holding the sticks. So, don't think there's a double duet acting here, or that previous Wooley / Evans or Wooley / Lytton experiences give a base of security to the events heard. As the wild card of the quartet, Black would easily (just by being himself) cut off all attempts to go to chartered terrain, but truth is he doesn't need to: veteran improviser Lytton and the two younger horn players are known, precisely, for their ability to contradict themselves and to perform the unexpected. So, Trumpet and Drums isn't the kind of summit you normally get when the same instruments are on stage. There's no battle of skills, even if they're well evident. That's something else what conducts this meeting of giants: to find what the mirrors don't show. And the four musicians do find what they search for, and so can you.

NATE WOOLEY SEXTET with JOSH SINTON/MATT MORAN/EIVIND OPSVIK/DAN PECK/HARRIS EISENSTADT - (Sit In) The Throne of Friendship (Clean Feed 280; Portugal) Nate Wooley - trumpet, Josh Sinton - bass clarinet & baritone sax, Matt Moran - vibraphone, Eivind Opsvik - double bass, Dan Peck tuba and Harris Eisenstadt - drums. Nate Wooley isn't only a great trumpeter, one of the very best around. He's also a musician of projects, a conceptualist, a composer, a bandleader. And the Nate Wooley Sextet is his brass band of sorts. 'Of sorts' because, as everything else in his music, its instrumental setup isn't the ordinary: an association of trumpet, bass clarinet doubling with baritone saxophone (Josh Sinton) and tuba (Dan Peck) results in something very far from all the established patterns for this kind of configuration. You can't have a fanfare with this formula. Or can you? Well, there's also a vibraphone (Matt Moran) to complicate things, and a 'normal' rhythm section (bassist Eivind Opsvik and drummer Harris Eisenstadt) keeps the group still. (Sit in) The Throne of Friendship is one more, but particularly notable, example that Wooley walks his own way, the most uneasy for him and for us, but also the most rewarding. This is non-conformist music structured and played with an exquisite sensibility and intelligence. You'll find it difficult to stop listening to this again and again..

SUSANA SANTOS SILVA/TORBJORN ZETTERBERG - Almost Tomorrow (Clean Feed 281; Portugal) Susana Santos Silva on trumpet & flugelhorn and Torbjorn Zetterberg on double bass. It doesn't prepare you for whats inside Almost Tomorrow knowing that Susana Santos Silva has some side projects in the fields of avant-jazz and non-idiomatic music (Lama, SSS-Q...) besides her mainstream activities with the quintet she leads and with Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos. Much in the same way, don't be fooled by the fact that Torbjorn Zetterberg goes sometimes all the way through improvisation (check out his trio with Ivo Perelman and Daniel Levin, for instance), breaking with the free bop format of his Hot Five. They're both in new territory here, exploring the dialogues between a trumpet and a double bass to the ultimate consequences. This is music with a research quality, almost a scientific experiment. But don't worry: what you have here is not a dry, cold, difficult, pretentious record. Completely the opposite: this is a dance of sounds, a permanent discovery of the one's and other's selves and of that elementary social sum obtained when a 2 comes from an interpersonal encounter. This music speaks of truth and of a deep humanity. It's not only a conversation; it's cohesive, cooperative, intimate.

JOE McPHEE - Sonic Elements (for trumpet and alto saxophone) (Clean Feed 278; Portugal) Featuring Joe McPhee on pocket trumpet and alto sax. Joe McPhee is a musician of many solo albums (this is the number eight), but each one gives a different view of his art - either because of the instrumental choices, being the tenor saxophone the most frequent recording option, or because he has something new to add. In this case we can hear him playing the pocket trumpet, nowadays maybe his first tool to improvise, and a secondary reed among several, the alto sax. There's a reason for this combination: Sonic Elements is a tribute to trumpeter extraordinaire Don Cherry, focusing on his period with the iconic alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman. The imitation stops there. A master in his own right, McPhee doesn't want to copy them, but to celebrate their music keeping a distance. Even so, three factors of that magical collaboration are retained after 50 years: the song format, the use of the blowing instruments as extended voices, and the blues feeling. That's right: you can listen to this CD as a homage to early free jazz, but this is really the document of a live performance (in Ljubljana, dating from 2012) committed to the mother-language of African-American music: the blues. And what a fabulous blues record this is!

JOE McPHEE With MIKE KULL/TYRONE CRABB/BRUCE THOMPSON/ERNEST BOSTIC et al - Nation Time: Live At Vassar College (UMS/Atavistic 201; USA) 2013 repress. This was recorded live (tracks 1 & 3) at Vassar College Urban Center for Black Studies,in Chicago Hall in 1970. Track 2 is from a recording session the next day at the same venue. The notes include some insight into McPhee's playing by the fine reed man Ken Vandermark. Also included are the original notes by Chris Albertson and the man himself-Joe McPhee. This music is a prime example of "black-power" music from an era when African Americans were spreading a message of equality for all and unity in the "black movement". During this time there were a number of jazz artists, especially in "free" jazz (or whatever people called it) who were expressing their thoughts and needs through their music. On that score,McPhee is no different than any number of other players of the time. What sets his music apart from other bands/musicians of the time is the inherent melody found in his compositions and his playing. The first track ("Nation Time") sets up the listener for whats to come. Jumping immediately into a fierce arrangement between McPhee's sax (he also plays trumpet),along with piano-Mike Kull, acoustic or electric bass and trumpet-Tyrone Crabb, and percussion-Bruce Thompson and Ernest Bostic, this (over 18 minutes long) track is somewhat along the lines of Pharoah Sanders' tune,"Freedom",especially the call-and-response of "what time is it?" shouted at the audience, over again,in the same manner Sanders shouted "freedom" in the beginning of his (also live) song. Never does the music venture into totally uncharted territory, where many listeners, unfamiliar with this type of jazz seemed to get bogged down. That's because there is a consistent framework,or foundation,to better enjoy what everyone is playing.
The second track ("Shakey Jake")is a bit tighter in sound, maybe because it's not a live recording. On this track only,is added Otis Greene-alto sax,Herbie Lehman-organ,and Dave Jones-electric guitar, with the above mentioned players. This gives this long (over 13 minutes) track a much denser, more active sound that is a highlight of the album. The arrangement is similar to the first track-the players never seem to step on one another, but coalesce into a true group sound, which is very rewarding.
The final track ("Scorpio's Dance") is a bit different than the previous two compositions. The playing, while following a melody,is a bit more atonal, but never so unfettered that the beat can't be easily recognized. This track has it's own peculiar energy-with it's almost start-stop arrangement. The group will be playing densely together, only to have a number of the players lay out,in order to bring an instrument to the fore. This track is over eight minutes long, but it definitely could have gone on longer, such is the power of the music, and the composing skills of McPhee. This is one of those albums/musicians that very few listeners (outside of his hometown) have heard of. To bad. This music is still vital after all these years, still visceral and immediate sounding. If you want to hear what relatively unknown jazz musicians were playing back in this era-this is a good example. This is exciting music-but not so esoteric that it can't be enjoyed by listeners with a set of open ears, and mind. - Stuart Jefferson

New on Rogueart!

EVAN PARKER/MATTHEW SHIPP - Rex Wrecks & XXX [2 CD set] (RogueArt 50; EEC) Featuring Evan Parker on tenor sax and Matt Shipp on piano. The double disc set features the duo recorded in the studio (9/6/11) as well as live the next day at the Vortex in London. This is the second time this duo has recorded, the first disc was released on the Treader label. Treader was or is run by John Coxsone from Spring Heel Jack, who also had both of these musicians playing with that band both in the studio and in the live situation. Plus this duo has also played at The Stone with William Parker when Evan curated two weeks in October of 2009. So Mr. Shipp and Mr. Parker do have a history of several collaborations.
The studio recording well done, warm and clean. They start out with immense restraint, building very slowly. I dig the way the duo work together providing different bits of shadows and ideas, weaving their way together and around one another. There are two solo pieces here which help balance the flow of this disc, showing a singular direction which then is stretched out when the duo reappears in the next section. If I didn't know better I would think that these two do have a more reflective, somewhat melodic side which we don't hear very often. Although Mr. Parker is a master at circular-breathing and working certain patterns, he uses these selectively giving the music more time to breathe and develop at a slower pace. The live set is continuous and something else entirely. It does start off quietly but soon escalates into darker or perhaps denser waters. Much of this is more intense as both musicians toss off layers of lines, changes in direction and occasional exclamations. No doubt that Evan and Matt have gotten to know each's playing better as they there is a good deal of tight, spirited dialogue. I also notice that there is a calm center even though there are those more stormy moments, it seems as if the duo has reached a maturation point where there is a solid, organic balance. This is one of the better duo offerings I've heard in recent memory - so dig in! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

MICHEL EDELIN QUARTET With JACQUES DI DONATO/JEAN-JACQUES AVENEL/SIMON GOUBERT - Resurgence (RogueArt 49; EEC) Michel Edelin: flute, alto flute alto, bass flute; Jacques Di Donato: bass clarinet, soprano saxophone; Jean-Jacques Avenel: double bass; Simon Goubert: drums
"The accent is put on the song, on melodic fluidity and rhythmic scansion, on the exactness of the narrative architecture, and one always keeps a respectful distance with large lyrical effusions and the emphatic expression of emotions. Michel Edelin, Jacques Di Donato, Jean-Jacques Avenel et Simon Goubert know how to calculate their phrases, sometimes as far as ellipse, they know how to delicately retie them, to proceed by allusions, sudden cuts, amused ruptures, leaps, tensions, parenthesis. One reaches an instant plenitude ('A line, a few summary vibrations, and everything becomes clear', as Mallarme wrote) irresistably seductive while, paradoxically, the improvisations flee the affected poetic style and take a malicious pleasure in thwarting the discourse which, by the rhythm and range would ring too pure, too beautiful" - Bernard Aime

CHRIS KELSEY & WHAT I SAY With ROLF STURM/JACK DeSALVO/JOE GALLANT/DEAN SHARP//MILES DAVIS - The Electric Miles Project (What I Say; USA) Chris Kelsey on soprano & straight alto sax, Rolf Sturm & Jack DeSalvo on electric guitars, Joe Gallant on six-string electric bass and Dean Sharp on drums. Saxist Chris Kelsey has recorded a half dozen discs for the CIMP & Cadence labels most often collaborating with Steve Swell, Francois Grillot and Jay Rosen, never using a guitarist. It does comes as a surprise that for this new project, Mr. Kelsey has organized a feisty quintet with two electric guitars and electric bass. Kelsey selected a fine all-star quintet of heavy hitters: Rolf Sturm (Walter Thompson Orchestra & Tomas Ulrich's Cargo Cult) and Jack DeSalvo (Ronald S. Jackson's Decoding Society & Herb Robertson) plus Joe Gallant (Illuminati & porn director) and Dean Sharp (Bob Gluck Trio).
Kelsey chose mostly songs from Miles' 70's electric period, playing pieces from 'Agharta', 'Live Evil' and 'On the Corner', as well as one original. What is interesting is that most of Miles recordings in the early seventies were live while this disc is a studio recording of what has mainly appeared on Miles' live albums. Starting off with the "Agharta Theme", the band is off and slamming. All five members of this quintet are well selected and sound inspired throughout. Mr. Gallant, who has played great electric and acoustic bass, has done his fair share of tribute recordings like Coltrane & Ayler for Prima Materia and the Dead for his own Illuminati Large Ensemble. The Miles music from this era featured the great former Motown bassist Michael Henderson so Mr. Gallant has his work cut out and delivers that fat, funky and furious groove throughout. The one original song, "Mad Love", does have that sly, dark, Miles' like sorcery sound as well. Much like the 'Agharta' and 'Pangea' live albums, that version of Miles' band featured two amazing guitarists: Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas. Since this bad is a bit more stripped down (no keyboard or extra percussion), it is left up to both guitars to provide layers of inspired lines. What makes this unit so magical is the way the (mostly) soprano sax and both guitars play together. Both guitarists take a number of those go-for-the-jugular solos that we former fusion-loving fans hold so dear. Today is July 4th (of 2013), so I am laying back grooving in my kitchen and waiting for the fireworks to begin. Actually, the fireworks have already begun and are here burning the voodoo down right here on this righteous disc. The highlight here is the epic-length (nearly 17 minutes) version of "Ife" which evolves from a humble beginning into a fine, slow-burning, classic of infectious greasy/jazz/funk/rock sizzling sumptuousness. Since the great Yo Miles! Band (Wadada Leo Smith & Henry Kaiser) is in limbo or possible defunct, it is great to hear someone taking thier place and keeping this music alive. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

CHRIS McINTYRE'S TILT CREATIVE BRASS BAND [RUSS JOHNSON/SHANE ENDSLEY/GARETH FLOWERS/JOE FIEDLER/JACOB GARCHIK/WILL LANG/JOHN CLARK/RACHEL DREHMANN/JOE EXLEY/KEVIN NORTON] - To TILT Volume One (Non-Site 01; USA) The TILT Creative Brass Band features Russ Johnson, Shane Endsley, Gareth Flowers on trumpets, Joe Fiedler, Jacob Garchik & Will Lang on trombones, John Clark & Rachel Drehmann on French horns, Joe Exley on tuba and Kevin Norton on percussion with Chris McIntyre conducting. Also guest trumpeter Andy Kozar on one cut.
I've caught trombonist Chris McIntyre several times with Elliott Sharp, Zeena Parkins and other composers. Mr. McIntyre organized the TILT Creative Brass Band, a fine local ten-piece New Music ensemble. Mr. McIntyre conducted TILT for this disc and runs the Non-Site label with Anthony Coleman as the producer. No doubt you should recognize some of the names of the players here: Russ Johnson, Joe Fiedler, Jacob Garchik, John Clark and Kevin Norton, all leaders, recording artists and collaborators of note.
Each of the five pieces are quite different and well selected to show off the diversity and creativity of this ensemble. McIntyre's "Foliation" was written for the late Suzanne Fiol, the late founder of Issue Project Room. It is a striking work of dense, layered brass over a steady pulse which later shifts to a more sparse section with the horns growing in layers, the pulse continues quietly underneath. Nick Didkovsky's "Stink Up!" is short but filled with dense, complex changes, similar to condensing several pieces by his band Dr. Nerve into a sort work-out. Anthony Coleman's Tzadik disc from last year 'The End of Summer' showed a much different side to his composing abilities. His piece here, "Set Into Motion" is also an unexpected delight with several bent sonorities layered in odd ways and occurring at strange intervals. It took numerous listens to comprehend the way it works. Trombonist & guitarist Curtis Hasselbring has two fine discs out in the last few years on the Skirl and Cuneiform labels. Both discs show how much of an important under-recognized composer he has become. His composition here is called "Revisitor" and it is a feisty fanfare for layers of powerful brass harmonies. Local trumpet master Nate Wooley is one of the busiest and most in-demand players in these parts, leading several bands and collaborating with a diverse array of talent. His contribution, "There was this Shadow, This Double" deals with twisted layers of drones, manipulated brass sounds and eerie vocal-like weirdness perhaps whispered through the brass. This piece unfolds slowly and was carefully arranged so that each layer is effective as they glide around or with another. Is this a dream or a nightmare? I guess this depends on your point of view and vibe that day or moment. This is an excellent main course for those of us who need a great feast for our ears. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

ELIZABETH BROWN - Mirage (New World 80751; USA) Elizabeth Brown, flute, shakuhachi, theremin; Newband; Momenta Quartet; Pro Musica Nipponia, Yasushi Inada, conductor; Ben Verdery, amplified classical guitar played with slide bar.
Seahorse (2009) [for theremin and Partch Instruments], Arcana (2004) [for flute and recorded sound], Piranesi (2007) [for theremin and string quartet], Three Arias from A Bookmobile for Dreamers (2011) [for theremin and recorded sound], Atlantis (2007) [for theremin and amplified classical guitar], Mirage (2008) [for shakuhachi and string quartet], Shinshoufuukei, or An Imagined Landscape (2010) [for Japanese traditional instrument orchestra]
The music of Elizabeth Brown (b. 1953) revels in paradox, but of a subtle kind. The strangeness of the music sneaks up on you; its liquid, mellifluous quality masks a far more radical stance. Seemingly irreconcilable instrumental timbres coexist peaceably: shakuhachi with string quartet, theremin with guitar, Partch instruments with theremin. The music is blessed with an old-fashioned gift for clear and singable melody . . . except for the fact that the tune keeps bending and melting. There is a genuine romantic sensibility, yet it exists in a soundworld that can only be avant-garde. But the avant-gardisme is in turn presented within a sensibility that is tender, sweet, and toylike. In short it expresses a genuine innocence, something we encounter far too rarely in an era of postmodern irony. Brown's musical world is one of dreamlike sounds, images, textures, colors, and harmonies. One sees the literature of the past, especially the Romantic era, transformed through its colored filter. One also glimpses a musical future that is fresh and imaginative, but never afraid of beauty, nor of humane warmth. Brown is a "gentle maverick." Though her music bespeaks an ironclad intelligence and steely will, and evidences ties to all sorts of American experimental traditions, it still desires to give pleasure to performer and listener alike. It is eclectic, but seamlessly so. Its many sources and influences blend into an organic whole that seems to have always been there, but which she fortuitously discovered. Above all, it is personal, the work of an unpretentious, deep, and questing spirit.

JACQUELINE HUMBERT & DAVID ROSENBOOM - Daytime Viewing (Unseen Worlds 10; USA) "Daytime Viewing (1979-80) is an extended narrative song, based on a casual analysis of daytime television drama and the audience phenomena such programming addresses. The piece explores the use of fantasy as a survival mechanism against loneliness, illustrating the human compulsion to inflate the mundane to mythological proportions. A central female character weaves tales, using threads of personal experience and the idea of TV as friend, as mantra, and as transformational window between imagined spectacle and the pedestrian plane. Originally released as a private cassette edition documenting the collaborative performance piece of the same name by Jacqueline Humbert and David Rosenboom, this heady, thoroughly enjoyable work is available for the first time ever on CD and LP. Jacqueline Humbert (aka J. Jasmine) is a songwriter of brains and wit on par with Robert Ashley, with whom she's worked extensively. David Rosenboom's complex, harmonic electronic arrangements are accentuated brilliantly by percussion from William Winant. Daytime Viewing can happily be added to a small but significant group of work that, through lesser-known paths, engaged in an equally revelatory reexamination of the great American songbook as minimalism did with 20th century composition. The CD jacket is printed on dyed, textured paper."

FROM SOUND OF A HANDSHAKE!

AMIINA - The Lighthouse Project [Ltd Ed CD ep + Booklet] (Sound Of A Handshake 17; EEC) Limited edition CD EP in a book-style packaging with 22 pages of full-color photos and artwork. Originally a string quartet formed by four girls at the Reykjavik College of Music just before the turn of the century, Amiina went on to cut its teeth as Sigur Ros' string collaborators for the next decade. After releasing debut album Kurr and several EPs, the group's sonic palette was broadened by the contributions of drummer Magnus Trygvason Eliassen and electronic artist Kippi Kaninus, who have been permanent members of the group since late 2009. They released their second full-length album, Puzzle (SHAKE 011CD/LP), in 2010. About four years ago Amiina, then a four-piece band, set out on a journey across Iceland performing in lighthouses and other unusual locations. The music had been written especially for performances in small spaces, and in great proximity to the audience. The inspiration behind the journey came the first time the band performed in a lighthouse. A man in the audience described how he had experienced the music in those surroundings. Standing on the top floor of the lighthouse, he had felt the music travel up through the structure and out across the ocean, as if the lighthouse were now projecting music instead of light. The group set off in a big van packed with instruments, accompanied by a photographer, one spouse, one newborn baby and another about to be born, and together they drove over rugged roads, seemingly to the end of the world, to perform music. The songs were a mix of old and new, little nocturnes in simple arrangements. Among them was a cover of Lee Hazlewood's "Leather and Lace." Amiina had previously collaborated with Lee only weeks before he passed away, on a song that ended up being his last recording. On the flip-side was Amiina's arrangement, and cover, of "Leather and Lace." The simple arrangement of the song fit perfectly with the other songs and the spirit of The Lighthouse Project. In late 2012, Amiina decided to revisit The Lighthouse Project -- to record these songs in their original arrangements, and give the music the prospect to travel out and across forever. The band felt it was important to convey the intimacy of the original performances, so the songs were recorded "live" in the studio, as if at a concert.

AMIINA - Puzzle (Sound Of A Handshake 11; EEC) Originally a string quartet formed by four girls at the Reykjavik College of Music in the 1990s, Amiina went on to cut their teeth as Sigur Ros' string section for the next decade. Now a sextet after a recent masculine infusion, Amiina presents their second full length album, Puzzle. Amiina's debut album, Kurr (2007), was performed on a disparate jumble of instruments -- musical saws, kalimbas, music boxes and seemingly anything that could be plucked, bowed or beaten on -- resulting in a work that ebbed and flowed "in a strange, powerful place between sophistication and innocence," according to The Guardian (UK). While the above is equally true of Puzzle, this time around the group's sonic palette is broadened by the contributions of drummer Magnus Trygvason Eliassen and electronic artist Kippi Kaninus, permanent members of the group since 2009. Accordingly, the songs on Puzzle are more rhythmically rugged than Amiina's previous work and feature heavier use of electronics. Amiina's long-standing fondness for zero-g melodies and open-minded instrumentation, however, continues.

BERNHARD FLEISCHMANN - Melancholie/Sendestrasse [2 CD set] (Sound Of A Handshake 03; EEC) Music from the depths of the room. Music from the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's transparent sculpture made of steel, concrete and glass. And in it there are the city lights, reflecting. On the occasion of the exhibition Melancholie -- Genie und Wahnsinn in der Kunst and a series of concerts that went were curated by de:bug magazine, the Vienna-based sound-bricoleur Bernhard Fleischmann has not only given a concert in the Neue Nationalgalerie, he has also composed a song only for that special night: 49 minutes and 15 seconds. Featuring the most melancholy of all instruments, the bandoneon, a cello and oscillating synthesizers. Melodies materialize softly and turn into bittersweet opulence, surrounded by short but central lines of loneliness recited from Rainer Maria Rilke's Herbsttag and Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy. On CD2, there is a picnic in the country, at the foot of a broadcasting mast outside of Vienna. Then, in summer 2003, it was the Kunstradio, the art channel of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation. Fleischmann took piano miniatures of the Austrian composer Franz Schubert as his source material. Again, the track is about 50 minutes long -- a journey from tumbling piano patterns to a drifty Vienna Wall of Sound, from Schubert to Fleischmann, if you want to. The tracks were performed live only once.

BERNHARD FLEISCHMANN With MARTIN SIEWERT/MATTHIAS FREY/ALEXANDR VATAGIN - For M/Mikro_Kosmos - Two Concerts [2 CD set] (Sound Of A Handshake 12; EEC) These two concerts B. Fleischmann recorded complement each other and interlock quite smoothly and organically, lifting you up when the other is pulling you down and vice versa. The first track "For M - A Tribute To Mark Linkous" was recorded in May 2010 at Klangboden Modling: Austrian angst might still be no option for a Weltanschauung, but there is a certain unease at work in the beginning, pushing down the strings and the cautious guitar loops. The entire piece is a musical obituary for the man who started Sparklehorse and shot himself only a few weeks prior to this very concert. While Fleischmann takes care of electronics, guitar and omnichord, as he usually does, he was joined on stage by Matthias Frey (violin, snare), Martin Siewert (guitar, lap-steel, bass, electronics), and Alexandr Vatagin (bass, electronics, cello). The resulting 45+ minutes of commemoration, initiated by B. for the late M., so to speak, is a dark yet glistening pile of leaves, in which the musicians repeatedly return to the bass line, the key note, the pulse, the "why," to all those existential questions about the end we all have to face one day. Question marks in the shape of a soaring lap-steel guitar appear on top of beats that turn and squeak, softly, like an extended lament, a form of rebellion, a consultation of yet more instruments, wondering and meandering in unison, until it all gives way to a swooshing noise, a threat to crush the listener from the inside, gnawing, biting, then resolve at last: harmony, harmonies, a shadow of zest, faith. Although he has contributed vocals now and then in the past, our man from Vienna remains silent for the second track as well, focusing on ambience alone: "Mikro_Kosmos," a solo piece, was recorded in June 2010 at "Festival Irritationen II." Like scoundrels in striped rags, a bunch of sounds appear on the quiet, two of them and a third hidden in the underbrush keeping watch, yet the electronic fetters soon get a hold of them, and a pool is filled with swirling, creaking textures, sliding downwards under a long note, long and wide like a horizon of dark clouds. "Mikro_Kosmos" is a spectacle of nature, a self-renewing environment populated by wraithlike creatures. In the middle part, Fleischmann's guitar takes the lead, runs wild, things are head over heels all of a sudden, there's beating and elopement, until we hear new paws on the ground, and the playing field is ready to be cluttered up once again: grow, thrive, wither, fade away, be eaten, until the next breakup sets this little world on fire.

KIRA KIRA [KRISTIN BJORK KRISTJANSDOTTIR] - Feathermagnetik (Sound Of A Handshake 13; EEC) Kira Kira is the alias of Icelandic composer and audio/visual artist Kristin Bjork Kristjansdottir, and her album Feathermagnetik is her third release. As a founding member of Kitchen Motors, a mischievous label and collective based on experiments in electronic music and the arts, she continually breaks boundaries between forms and genres through a repertoire that includes compositions for theater, film, dance and art installations -- as well as playful multi-disciplinary productions that exceed her work as merely a composer. Her first feature film as director and screenwriter, Grandma Lo-Fi -- The Basement Tapes Of Sigridur Nielsdottir has been celebrated at New York's Museum of Modern Art, SXSW and a plethora of other festivals around the world. When Kira Kira wrote the first notes of Feathermagnetik, she was in between homes: stranded in an icy Berlin winter, re-figuring seemingly figured-out things anew, questioning old belongings and longings and opening up to a vast new terrain. The album reflects this impulse to re-assemble lost parts and to give in to the process of transformation and re-orientation in a new and unexplored place. It is a manifestation of the strength and imperative of friendship at times of change when Kira Kira set out all her antennas to map out the firmament of this record with her friends as coordinates and lights in the night. A wild array of amazing musicians appear on Feathermagnetik, which was created in Berlin, Reykjavik and in the Ulappa studio on Finnish island Suomenlinna, headquarters of Kristin's closest collaborator, percussion wizard Samuli Kosminen, who mixed and produced the album with her as well as playing custom-made percussion, psaltery and taisho koto harp. Finnish violin wonder Pekka Kuusisto whistles, hums and pumps an old harmonium organ, Borgar Magnason, an active force with the Bedroom Community label, brings a beastly yet tender quality of rumble and drone to the mix; trumpeteer Eirikur Orri Olafsson, another of Kristin's closest collaborators, plays a big role on the record, layering gorgeous horns and whistles. Kitchen Motors co-conspirator Hilmar Jensson plays guitar, Finnish musicians Heikki Nikula and Jarmo Saari play contrabass clarinet and Theremin, German photographer Antje Taiga Jandrig lends a vocal presence on the closing piece of the album and Petur Hallgrimsson plays lapsteel. Feathermagnetik is crafted with Kristin's uncompromising surrender to emotions as a compass and music as a plane to either fly or float in bewildering places full of gloomy desires and graceful explorers who wander through their beguiling environment with tender curiosity. Includes a download code for bonus audio and video content.

New and Recent from Aurora Borealis!

TSUTEKH HEXEN With ANDREW LILES - Breed in Me the Darkness (Aurora Borealis 59; UK) A breathtaking collision of noise, black metal and post-industrial magnificence. Two immense tracks from Sutekh Hexen and two epic re-imaginings from Andrew Liles (collaborator with Nurse With Wound, Current 93 and more). Breed in Me the Darkness stands as the aural/visual apex to an era for Sutekh Hexen. The two central tracks, as dense and intricate as any of the band's previous output, were turned over to Andrew Liles to complete the vision of what these recordings meant. The incredible re-visioning of Liles takes the release to uncharted and undreamed-of dimensions. Twinned with the photography of A.E. Csaky, with design by Kevin Gan Yuen (guitars/electronics), Breed in Me the Darkness is one of the most astonishing and powerful releases on Aurora Borealis. Sutekh Hexen hail from San Francisco, USA, and have been demolishing musical boundaries in extreme music, unlearning the traditions of black metal, since 2010. They have previous releases on Handmade Birds, Magic Bullet and Holy Terror. UK-based Andrew Liles is a sonic genius and a hugely prolific artist with numerous solo releases as well as works with The Hafler Trio, Faust, Nurse With Wound, and Current 93, amongst others.

SEIROM - 1973 [2 CD set] (Aurora Borealis 58; UK) Aurora Borealis is very proud to announce the release of 1973, a double album from Seirom. One of the best albums the label has heard this year, Seirom has crafted a beautiful, stark, atmospheric, sometimes unsettling record on par with the likes of Tim Hecker, Fennesz, GAS, Thomas KOner, Murcof and Sunn O))). Seirom is about "beauty" and melancholy -- the more beautiful aspects of life. Seirom is about personal expression without boundaries, internal or external. Seirom is about grand, bombastic melody filtered through noise and black metal aesthetics. The marriage of wedding bells to blastbeats. Seirom is M.C. De Jong, mastermind of Gnaw Their Tongues, Aderlating and others, a stalwart of bleak and desolate music for many years. Seirom sees a different side of De Jong's musical output, an outpouring of glorious light spread across two CDs.

SCYTHLING - Smokefall (Aurora Borealis 54; UK) Scythling began with improvised sessions by Aidan Baker (Nadja, Whisper Room, Infinite Light Ltd.) and Josh Rothenberger (Bloody Panda) recorded live in-studio in Brooklyn, NY in February 2008. The resultant material was subsequently re-worked and shaped into the three tracks featured on Smokefall, including independent contributions from various guest musicians. The resultant album combines elements of both Baker's and Rothenberger's respective bands to create something new -- a mixture of heavy drones and spacious ambient, creeping darkness and eerie light. The additional textures brought to the table, such as the vocals of Rebecca Fasanello and the hammered dulcimer of Michael Tamburo, further elevate the release into transcendent realms.

THE HAXAN CLOAK [BOBBY KRLIC] - The Haxan Cloak (Aurora Borealis 50; UK) The Haxan Cloak's debut album is barely believable. Exploring mystic and occult audio space with cello, field recordings, violins, hand-made percussion and the human voice, this is barely conceivable as an artist's first album. The depth and quality is on a par with Ben Frost/Tim Hecker. Combining elements of modern classical, film score and electronica with modern free folk and even metal sensibilities, The Haxan Cloak is a truly diverse album. "Burning Torches of Desire" brings to mind a sedated Prurient trapped on a galleon, whereas "Fall" and "Parting Chant" have the pathos of incredibly powerful modern classical pieces, with stunning vocal performances from collaborator Mikhail Karikis. "The Growing" shows a more modern, more digital side with its nod to modern electronic and even dubstep in its processed percussion, though culminating in unexpected grindcore blast beats courtesy of noted tattoo artist and drum maestro Liam Sparkes (Trencher). Additional visceral power was gained thanks to the mastering of Kris Lapke, longtime cohort of NYC's Hospital Productions, home of Prurient, amongst others.

HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS/STEFAN SCHNEIDER - Tiden (Bureau B 132; Germany) "Not long after Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) and Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot, Kreidler, Mapstation) had released their first album Stunden, accompanied by a few live shows in 2011, Eric Satie and Brian Eno were quoted as the great inspiration for their musical collaboration. Fine references no doubt, one having invented musique d'ameublement, and the other having refined it into ambient music 80 years later. Yet Tiden does not sit easily in either camp. This is neither tasteful decor (a la Satie), nor is it electronic-auditory space-filler (a la Eno), gazing towards infinity. The short duration of the 13 pieces is enough to discount either genre. Better to consider these as concentrated, inspired etudes, carefully thought through and in no way random or sketchy. With cheerful gravitas, the two artists create absolute music -- music which desires only to be itself, without ulterior effects and with the declared intent of involving the listener in his emotional, inventive game. Perhaps Franz Schubert's moments musicaux would be a more suitable citation. The lightness and atmospheric intimacy of this music reveal Roedelius (grand piano, synthesizer) and the decades younger Schneider (Elektronik) as musicians who understand how to listen to one another and improvise on each other's ideas immediately. The result is a lively, relentless interplay of great composure, more surprising than any tide could be, as precise calendars exist for tidal flows. Roedelius can already look back on an adventuresome career in music. Schneider has also prospered through exciting decades in contemporary pop. This is the second time their paths have crossed. Tiden keeps the promise which their first album made -- genial contemporary music from two artists who are as one in heart and soul. And when Roedelius steps on the pedal of his grand piano, well, it squeaks a little." --Asmus Tietchens

KLAUS SCHULZE - La Vie Electronique 11 [3 CD set] (Made In Germany 692; Germany) In 1992-93 Klaus Schulze recorded about ten hours of music, not intended for record release. This music was issued in a box set and quickly sold out, so smaller collections have been reissued. Disc 1: The four parts of 'Film Musik' contain the complete music for the soundtrack to the 1993 German TV documentary 'Spurensicherung. Baudenkmaler.' Disc 2: Klaus called the 71-minute piece 'Narren des Schicksals' his first symphony. It was recorded in 1992/'93 for no special purpose. Disc 3: Track 1, 'Der Schonheit Spur', is the longer version of the music Klaus recorded 1993 as soundtrack for a film about Berlin's Potsdamer Platz, and the final track ('Return in Happy Plight') is the remixed version which was actually used for the film. 'Ein schones Autodafe' was meant but not used as ballet music for Klaus' opera 'Totentag'.

KLAUS SCHULZE - La Vie Electronique 10 [3 CD set] (Made In Germany 192; Germany) CD1: Unheilbar Deutsch; CD2: Walk The Edge; Havlandet; Interview 1991; CD3: Goodwill; Ole; Habla Espanol; Gaudi Gaudi; Suite Nr.3, D-Dur, 2. Satz, "Air". "Former member of Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel's 10th volume of his early works. La Vie Electronique is a series of 3-disc CD releases by Klaus Schulze, reissuing material from his limited edition 50-disc CD box set The Ultimate Edition (2000), which itself collected the previously released limited edition multi-disc box sets Silver Edition (1993, 10 discs), Historic Edition (1995, 10 discs), and Jubilee Edition (1997, 25 discs), along with an additional five discs. The series began in 2009 (the first four were on the Inside Out/Revisited label) with a plan to release all the music from The Ultimate Edition in chronological order.

KLAUS SCHULZE - La Vie Electronique 8 [3 CD set] (Made In Germany 172; Germany) Klaus Schulze recorded some of his more introspective works. Albums like Mirage, Dune, and Dig It saw a significant change in his style of playing and his way of composing. While Schulze was quickly expanding his collection of synthesizers, that ultimately had its effect on the outlook of the music and the possibilities of performing that in a more exquisite way. Play a track like 'Synthasy' and notice that Schulze has come a long way since Timewind and Moondawn. On this 8th part of La Vie Electronique there's a selection of stuff that was archived beside his official albums in those years. A large part of this 3CD-set forms the appearance of concert recordings (made on a cheap, but stereo radio cassette recorder) from Klaus' 1979 tour with singer Arthur Brown. Besides the recordings that made up three sides of his monumental Live album that was released in 1980, there were plenty of other versions available of the material that Schulze played during the fall of 1979. The late seventies/early eighties' work of Klaus Schulze is often overlooked and underrated by many. Hearing the material featured on this 3CD-set, one can discover the 'other side' of that particular period when analogue was still there, but digital was about to become the power to be.

KLAUS SCHULZE - La Vie Electronique 7 [3 CD set] (Made In Germany 162; Germany) 'Re: People I Know' is the first of the two long pieces that Klaus played during his Dusseldorf concert in 1977. It's similar to the highly valued piece that KS played around the same time in Brussels' St. Michaels cathedral. 'Avec Arthur': During the lengthy 1979 tour, Klaus played a long solo piece that filled the first half of the concerts as usual. After the intermission, the singer Arthur Brown joined him for the second piece. This is one of those energetic second halves. Arthur could be, and was often, very high-spirited, very good, I dare say even excellent. As here, on the 25th of October 1979 in a youth club of the Belgian town of Liege. During the peaceful part after the break (and his famous roar). Arthur sings partly in French. Merveilleux! My diary reports: 'Small youth club, jam packed. Good concert.' 'Crazy Nietzsche' is loosely based on Klaus' well-known 'Friedrich Nietzsche' title from the X recording session. As on the X tracks, the drumming is by the great rhythm man Harald Grosskopf. First, Klaus recorded Harald's familiar solid pulse, and for the middle part - 'Asketische Ideale' - he was asked to add some floor toms' playing. As usual during that blooming Schulze era, also this track was recorded at the Panne-Paulen studio in Frankfurt. After listening to the music for the first time after many years, Klaus told me it must be a live recording because of the sound of the Korg PS 3300 that he only played in concerts not in a studio. Judge for yourself.

KLAUS SCHULZE - La Vie Electronique 6 [3 CD set] (Made In Germany 152; Germany) CD 1 contains the second part of the Oberhausen-concert with 'Schwanensee' and two solo pieces recorded in 1976 in the studio in Hambuhren. 'Fear at Madame Tussaud's' was recorded in April, 1977 in the London planetarium - at that time a novelty, for it was the first time that a concert was held in a planetarium. 'Zeitgeist' is a concert which was recorded on October 17th , 1977 in front of 5500 people in the Saint Michael cathedral in Brussels, 'Inside The Harlequin' is the encore of this evening. The recording date of 'La Vie Secrete' cannot be exactly determined after all years any more. Recorded either in 1977/78 or 1975 this piece remains a very quiet, almost meditative jewel. In contrast to this stands 'Barracuda Drum' recorded about 1978 with Harald Grosskopf on drums. Last but not least at the end of the third CD we encounter the Klaus Schulze of 1979: In October and November that year Klaus Schulze was on tour with Arthur Brown ('Fire'). 'There was Greatness in the Room' is a fragment of the encore of concert from October, 29th 1979 in Brussels. The specific thing about this recording: Beside the voice of Arthur Brown the vocoder-voice of Klaus Schulze is also to be heard.

KLAUS SCHULZE - La Vie Electronique 5 [3 CD set] (Made In Germany 142; Germany) "We are proud to announce La Vie Electronique Vol. 5. (The first 4 volumes came out on Inside Out/Revisited). The rarities of the electronic pioneer Klaus Schulz were previously released in a strictly limited edition, called The Ultimate Edition, and document the history and the rich diversity of this exceptional musician, even more impressive than on his official releases. Now these recordings, completely remastered and for the first time in chronological order, are available in elaborate editions. Every episode contains 3 CDs in high-quality 'vinyl look' with digipack including booklet with detailed background information and comments. La Vie Electronique Vol. 5 contains music of the years from 1976 to 1977. 'Berlin Schoneberg' was recorded in 1976 at a Berlin radio concert, 'Vie de reve' is a concert from the same year, recorded in Reims in France. 'Nostalgic Echo' and 'Titanische Tage' are also solo concerts from 1976. A year later 'For Barry Graves' has been recorded - a short concert for the West German Radio broadcasting show music extra 3. 'The Oberhausen Tape' is a concert from 1976 (you will find the second part of this concert on La Vie Electronique 6). Finally, 'The Poet' is a typical piece of the 'Moondawn' era."

ALBERT AYLER QUARTET With MARY PARKS/STEVE TINTWEISS/ALLEN BLAIRMAN - Live on the Riviera 1970 (ESP Disk 4001; USA) New 2013 remaster! Featuring Albert Ayler - tenor saxophone, soprano, musette, vocal; Mary Maria [Parks] - vocal; soprano saxophone, Steve Tintweiss - double bass and Allen Blairman - drums. "Albert Ayler's beautiful 1970 (July 25th) set on his first day at the Maeght Foundation in France. Liners include bass player Steve Tintweiss' comments on the performance. Available commercially for the first time, and recorded the first night [when Call Cobbs, pianist of the quintet, was stranded at the airport] of Ayler's final concert series. It was not that long ago when we Ayler freaks could only find a handful of his recordings on CD. Things have definitely changed. There are now a dozen CDs to choose from, plus last year's grand treasure, the 'Holy Ghost' 10 CD box-set & thick book, [which this store alone has sold over a gross of copies so far]. And now this, another extraordinary gem! Truly an historic concert, atop a mountain, in a geodesic dome, captured a by French radio and broadcast to those lucky enough to listen. Both Mary Maria and Ayler are hooked up and wailing together when "Birth of Mirth" begins, out vocalizing and free sax, but not too far out. Ayler's tone is warm and almost tender, the trio playing beautifully together, strong yet somber bowed bass and floating percussion. Ayler goes further out on his soprano on "Masonic Inborn" twisting them notes inside-out, as the rest of the group levitates with him, notes like sparks igniting into flames. Turns out that it was Mary's soprano sax playing that was so out there, as she and Ayler wail their (s)axes together on "Oh! Love of Life". It sounds as if Ayler has come back down to the earth, he is playing with more restraint and even singing softly yet strangely on this same piece. "Can you hear the angels singing?" he extols in his wavering voice. Mary Maria does some fine spoken/sung word vocals on just three tracks and she does indeed fit well with this band, no complaints here. For those of you who have yet to hear Albert Ayler, this would be a perfect place to start as this is his least "out" effort, but it is still a strong testament to a most creative spirit who is still with us, thanks to recordings like this. The final tune is Ayler's old classic, "Ghosts", which shines like a jewel in the sky, that perfect blend of a salvation army/marching band melody, coming directly from the heart and soul and pouring all over us like cosmic molasses and washing away the evil spirits. - BLG

KEVIN DRUMM - Imperial Distortion (Remastered) [3 LP set] (Hospital 134; USA) One of the most iconic ambient albums of the last decade, Imperial Distortion (2008) had an extremely limited vinyl pressing a couple of years ago which some argued never quite captured the full depth and frequency range of the original material due to the way in which it was mastered. This brand-new edition has long been planned by the label and has now been painstakingly remastered by Matt Colton, unveiling a filigree spectrum of microtonal flux and layers of atmosphere that were simply neglected with the previous edition. It's like surveying the same post-apocalyptic landscape without your gas mask on. Mego's genre-defining Sheer Hellish Miasma (EMEGO 053LP) might have set Kevin Drumm up as America's premier exponent of grinding noise, but Imperial Distortion is an entirely different beast and confirmed Drumm as one of the most important figures in the American avant-garde. Unfolding over two hours of music, Imperial Distortion was the post-millennial answer to Aphex Twin's seminal Selected Ambient Works Vol. II. But where Richard D. James created a floating world tapped into his lucid dreams, Drumm takes us into the darkest recesses somewhere deep beneath the sea with bombs and guns tearing flesh and concrete overhead. The album offers an escape; the subtle oscillations and tones thick with guilt and pregnant with disdain for a palsied society, and on headphones leave you totally paralyzed. Make no mistake: Drumm is no newcomer to the scene and isn't jumping on or off any bandwagon. If you've never heard this incredible album before, you're in for quite a treat.

ITS A BEAUTIFUL DAY [aka DAVID LaFLAMME BAND] - Beyond Dreams (Classic Music Vault 217; USA) Remastered reissue of the 2003 album (released at that time unedr the name David LaFlamme Band) with a new bonus track from the legendary San Francisco band. This studio album came nearly 40 years after the inception of the band and shows that they are still capable of pumping out great tunes. Features reworked versions of some of their best tracks along with new tunes. Digipak version. 2003 review of the Repertoire edition: "One has to hand it to David LaFlamme and his band: they're one of the few current outfits seemingly capable of revisiting their leader's work of four decades earlier and improving upon it. The version of the It's a Beautiful Day classic "White Bird" that opens this CD -- whose dates of origin and recording are mysteriously absent -- is so charming and disarming that it could have been a single in the 21st century without much trouble. The rest is pretty much a match for that make-or-break cut, with some of the newer material such as "Lost in Paradise" and "Who's Gonna Love Me" (which does lift a line out of a Paul Simon song rather shamelessly) slotting in perfectly with the older sides. The whole album is a kind of amazing document of prodigious talent undimmed by time. The sound is excellent, incidentally, and if there is a flaw, it's the lack of annotation of any kind. But that's no problem -- most listeners will be so busy listening to the music that they'll never notice." - Bruce Eder

EAST OF UNDERGROUND - East of Underground/SOAP [2 CD set] (Now Again 5098; USA) United States Army soldiers made the music contained in this two-CD re-release during the politically turbulent early '70s, towards the end of the Vietnam War. East of Underground and SOAP were bands comprised of soldiers stationed in bases across Western Germany. While little is known about the bands, the players, and the milieu they came from - other than what can be pieced together from a handful of photos and documents found in a box in the New York Public Library, and the vague recollections of some of those involved -- we at Now-Again Records have worked diligently with the United States Army and researchers the country over to present this important document ? and some damn good soul and funk music. Only one former band member has come forward during the assembly of this anthology, which has lead us to question: where did these talented performers land after their winning performances in Army-sponsored Battle of the Bands contests afforded them (musical) tours across European Army bases? Perhaps some are still around somewhere: perhaps some are still involved in music; perhaps some were killed in action; perhaps some passed on after returning to the States. Wherever they are now, their legacy has been cemented in this exquisite re-issue, a snapshot of one of America's most politically tumultuous times. Archival reproduction of East of Underground's mythical masterpiece, housed in thick cardboard 'tip-on' gatefold sleeve. Heavy James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Funkadelic, and Sly Stone covers. Also includes SOAP album on a separate CD."
"In 1971, in the midst of America's conflict in Vietnam, the U.S. Army held a show-band contest and showcased the two winning bands in a promotional album. East of Underground, the gritty runner-up, managed to capture the spirit of America with their sweet-soul covers of Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, and Funkadelic. The quality of the recording is superior, as is the musicianship: the falsetto harmonies, the gritty guitar, the devouring drums. But song choice is just as responsible for the success of the album. Unlike other obscure-funk reissues and compilations, East of Underground is immediately familiar, instantly gratifying, and endlessly playable. And especially poignant today."

EAST OF UNDERGROUND/BLACK SEEDS/SOUND TREK - Hell Below [3 CD set] (Now Again 5083; USA) "United States Army soldiers made the music contained in this three album box-set during the politically turbulent early '70s, towards the end of the Vietnam War. We've assembled vestiges - a show band contest entry form, a list of names, a couple of photographs, a playlist - to embellish this sonic time capsule, a capsule that functions as a snapshot of American culture during this politically charged era. Each of the two double-billed albums contained in this box-set is presented as an exact reproduction of the original United States Army issue. The extensive, full-color booklet features essays, annotation and a collection of Army ephemera from the creation of these albums. Also included is a full-color, exact reproduction of East Of Underground's 1971 tour poster."

MEMPHIS JUG BAND - Memphis Jug Band [2 LP set] (Yazoo 1067; USA) Gatefold double LP reissue of Yazoo's 28 song collection of the Memphis Jug Band; on 180 gram vinyl. R. Crumb cover art. "The Memphis Jug Band is the most entertaining and historically important jug band of all time. Especially fascinating is the very wide range of American music that their repertoire covers: blues, rags, stomps, breakdowns, vaudeville, minstrel and more. They were the premier practitioner of the extremely popular Memphis style of the 1920's."

More on Mississippi!

MICHAEL HURLEY - Wildegeeses/South in Virginia [7" 45rpm] (Mississippi 40 EP; USA) "1993 recording of one of Michaels greatest songs of all time. Unreleased version featuring just Michael and his guitar. 'Wildegeeses' is a heavy little ballad about love and loss and all that kind of thing. The B side, 'West Virginia,' is a recording from around the same time -- a song that's never come out until now. Both killers. Full color picture sleeve painted by Michael. One time only limited edition. A co-release with our friends at Secret Seven."
7" single for $8

MARISA ANDERSON - Mercury (Mississippi 49; USA) "Portland guitar virtuoso Marisa Anderson is back with a new set of home recorded instrumentals. This time around we find Marisa exploring structures more based on the Appalachian folk tradition. The bluesy cadences of Marisa's other Mississippi release -- Golden Hour -- are still there but more in an emotional sense than a structural. It's rare to find a record that has just one instrument with no vocals that can achieve real emotional communication -- but here 'tis. Marisa thoughtfully composed and recorded this LP over the course of the last two years. It was worth the wait. A contemporary record that can hold its own against the various re-issued folk music on our label."
LP $15

NIGHTINGALES AND CANARIES [V.A.] - Women Of The Middle East 1930-1940s: Vol 1 (Mississippi 44; USA) "Aching and radiant songs from 78 RPM discs dating from the '30s and '40s. Canaries and Nightingales Vol. 1 is our first collection of the voices of women from the Middle East during the first half of the 20th century. Side one of the album includes outrageously flirtatious and rocking performances by Christian and Jewish immigrants from Anatolia, Istanbul, and Roumelia. Side B includes more demure and artful performances by some of the greatest Turkish stars of the first generation of Muslim women to sing on records. Liner notes by Ian Nagoski with phtographs of the artists. A co-release with Canary records."
LP $15

S E ROGIE - The Sounds of SE Rogie (Mississippi 50; USA) "At last, a reissue full LP of the legendary Palm wine guitarist SE Rogie's early work. Truly beautiful songs from the 1960s ranging from sweet acoustic solo numbers to blazing full band electric music. SE Rogie had a very long and pioneering career in Sierra Leone. His songs are some of the most beautiful ever - gentle and lilting timeless melodies. One of the greats. A co-release with our friends at the Domino Sound label."
LP $15

BOUBACAR TRAORE - Mariama (Mississippi 08/Little Axe; USA) "A reissue of Boubacar Traore's classic debut album, Mariama. Originally released on cassette in the late 1980s, after he had already been a star in Mali for over 25 years. Recorded in the wake of losing his wife, eight beautiful, haunting tracks by one of Mali's most renowned singers and purveyor of Malian blues."
LP $16
