The amazing marriage of talents we've been waiting for!

LEE 'SCRATCH' PERRY With BILL LASWELL/JOSH WERNER/STEVEN BERNSTEIN/BERNIE WORRELL/HAMID DRAKE/SLY DUNBAR et al - Rises Again (MODT 07; USA) Rise Again - the title speaks for itself. A clear and direct collaborative projection that transforms pop music production into an art form all its own. Like an ageless tribe of Lazarus, Lee 'Scratch' Perry just keeps coming back. This time out, the Upsetter celebrates his 75th year on planet Earth with the release of Rise Again - a crucial set of eleven all-new songs; music, mixing and production by Bill Laswell with Josh Werner - and featuring vocals by TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe, Ethiopian chanteuse Gigi Shibabaw and Jamaican toaster Hawk(man). Other guests include Dr Israel, Guy Licata, Sly Dunbar, Hamid Drake, Steven Bernstein, Bernie Worrell, Peter Apfelbaum, and Aaron Duggan
"The most startling thing about this album is the fact that something like this hasn't been done before. How can it be that two of the foremost exponents of extraterrestrial bass-oriented music -- reggae producer and inscrutable solo artist Lee "Scratch" Perry and ubiquitous producer and bassist Bill Laswell -- have failed to collaborate on an album before now? This meeting brings out the best of them by, paradoxically, tempering both of their wildest tendencies. Perry's sing-song declamations are quirky as always, but not as flat-out crazy (not to mention childishly scatological) as they have been in other recent contexts; Laswell's bass is just as bottomless and as richly melodic as it usually is, but his tendency toward discursive improvisational chaos has been reined in for purposes of maximum groove production. On the other hand, Laswell has fully indulged his tendency to bring in lots of high-powered and voluptuously funky collaborators, with the result that he and Perry have help from the likes of Senegalese percussionist Aiyb Dieng, P-Funk founding father Bernie Worrell, Brooklyn dubmaster Dr. Israel, reggae legend Sly Dunbar, and the always alluring Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw (whose vocal performance on "Orthodox" is one of the album's highlights), among others.
The results are just wonderful: while Perry discusses such favorite topics as his space-alien status ("E.T.") and his role as a divine messenger to the world ("Scratch Message"), Laswell and crew build earth-shaking grooves with a contrastingly soft, spacious dubwise ambience on such standout tracks as "Wake the Dead" (check out the great horn chart, courtesy of Steven Bernstein and Peter Apfelbaum), the soca-flavored "African Revolution," and the dancehall romp "Dancehall Kung Fu." Those who are missing Perry's more whimsical side should check out the crazily dubwise "Inakaya (Japanese Food)." And the program is rounded out by a digital-only remix of "House of God." Hardcore Perry fans will probably be divided on this one, but nevertheless, it's not difficult to conclude that Rise Again is one of his most satisfying releases of the past ten years." ~ Rick Anderson, AMG
"Fusing Eccentric spiritual vision with Rastafarian psychedelia, surreal experimental pop, powerful protest music and rock solid dub reggae with African overtones. A world of hidden connections revealing multinational conspiracy theories, old testament prophecies, Rastafarian poetry & incantations of the Jamaican folk witchcraft known as Obeah. Topped off with hermetic language games and comic book metaphysics." - Bill Laswell

New on Cuneiform!

WADADA LEO SMITH ORGANIC With NELS CLINE/MICHAEL GREGORY [JACKSON]/BRANDON ROSS/SKULI SVERRISSON/PHEEROAN AkLAFF et al - Heart's Reflections [2 CD set] (Cuneiform 330/331; USA) "Organic's music is a swirling roar, part fusion and part jazz rock orchestra, like a combination of Burnt Sugar and Frank Zappa's Hot Rats Ensemble." - The Wire, February 2010 cover story "Organic's music is powerfully electric and electronic in nature; fiery and interactive in character; contemporary, spiritual and politically conscious, its creative energy is heartfelt and connected with the human feeling." - Wadada Leo Smith Although he made his reputation over decades and decades of work in the free jazz and improvised music realm and as a early member of Chicago's hugely influencial AACM (the Association for the Advancement of Creative Music), trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith has long been interested in larger ensembles and electric music as well. Heart's Reflections is a bold double-disc set that features Wadada Leo Smith's Organic, a predominately electric, fourteen-piece group, a band most notable for a lineup marked by four guitarists. In addition to Smith, who plays both acoustic and electric trumpet, the extraordinary lineup on Heart's Reflection includes: Brandon Ross, Michael Gregory, Lamar Smith, and Josh Gerowitz on guitar; Skuli Sverrisson and John Lindberg on bass; Angelica Sanchez on acoustic and electric piano; Stephanie Smith on violin; Casey Anderson on alto saxophone; Casey Butler on tenor saxophone; Mark Trayle and Charlie Burgin on laptops; and Pheeroan AkLaff on drums. For a record by such a large group, at times the sound is surprisingly sparse and delicate - both qualities that have long marked Smith's work, while at other times, it sizzles and stomps! Though longtime listeners who haven't followed Wadada's work in the last decade might be surprised at times by the fierceness of Organic's rhythm section, Heart's Reflections is nonetheless marked by the trumpeter's usual touchstones: long sustained notes, occasional clipped phrases, and a tough-to-define playfulness that infuses all of his work.
Coming across like the next evolutionary step after Miles Davis' electric era, Heart's Reflections is a vibrant set that harkens back to the blues influence of Smith's Mississippi childhood, and looks forward to still-developing realms of noise and electronics. The album fuses a galaxy of influences into a natural and accessible form, offering an ideal entry point into Smith's vast oeuvre. Heart's Reflections should appeal to fans of groove-oriented jazz, as well as rock and electronics audiences with a taste for adventure.

GOSTA BERLINGS SAGA - Glue Works (Cuneiform 319; USA) Named after one of the most notable Swedish books of all time, Gosta Berlings Saga are currently one of Sweden's most notable bands. The group are a modern instrumental rock band and their style combines post-rock, progressive rock, minimalism, avant-rock, collage/sound and more, all recorded and combined with unusual and interesting studio techniques. The four members of Gosta Berlings Saga, with their diverse musical backgrounds and personalities find a common focal point in the music they create together. Each individual effort is melted into the pot and glued together with the rest to create something greater together. The collage as a working method; Soft glued to rough. Epic glued to tiny. Minimalism glued to maximalism, all to create a new whole.
For their third album and their first for Cuneiform, Gosta Berlings Saga have created an album that is highly and creatively produced. The solid backbone of the band is always the focus and the core: Alexander Skepp (drums and percussion), Einar Baldursson (guitars), David Lundberg (Fender Rhodes, synthesizers and Mellotron), Gabriel Hermansson (bass). With the engineering and production work of Mattias Olsson (Anglagard, White Willow, etc) the band has created a truly all-embracing and forward thinking album. The disc is packed with creative and surprising flourishes from guest musicians performing on French horn, musical saw, cello, trumpet and more. There is always a lot going on that makes Glue Works much more than 'merely' a document of band performing; the group is performing extremely well, but the production work incorporates many unique elements into the album in tremendously surprising ways.

PHIL MILLER With ELTON DEAN/PETER LEMER/HUGH HOPPER/PIP PYLE - Cutting Both Ways (Cuneiform 11; USA) Phil made his name as guitarist with the legendary bands Delivery, Matching Mole, Hatfield & the North and National Health. This was the first album released under his own name, and the first album to feature his band In Cahoots, who are pretty much of a supergroup themselves: Hugh Hopper-bass (Soft Machine), Elton Dean-saxes (Soft Machine), Peter Lemer-keyboards (Gilgamesh, Mike Oldfield, Pierre Moerlin's Gong) & Pip Pyle-drums (Gong, Hatfield, National Health). Additionally, two tracks are multi-overdubbed meetings between Phil and keyboardist Dave Stewart (Egg, Hatfield, National Health). Canterbury jazz/rock of the highest order.

TAYLOR HO BYNUM/JOE MORRIS/SARA SCHOENBECK - Next (Porter 4058; USA) Taylor Ho Bynum, Joe Morris and Sara Schoenbeck are three musicians who are no strangers to the improv scene. Bynum is a stellar performer on cornet and various brass instruments, composer, bandleader, and "one of the most exciting figures in jazz's new power generation" (Steve Dollar, Time Out Chicago). Joe Morris has been an active participant in the music scene for over thirty years and brings a unique perspective to improvised guitar rarely heard in today's music. Sara Schoenbeck approaches the bassoon in an unexpended manner by coaxing strange low tones and alien like vibrations from her instrument. There are times when it is very difficult to tell which instrument is making which sound and that is the true joy of the recording that always has the listening wondering, what is next.

TERRENCE McMANUS/MARK HELIAS/GERRY HEMINGWAY - Transcendental Numbers [Ltd Ed of 500] (NoBusiness CD 27; EEC) Guitarist Terrence McManus writes in his notes to this album that he was: .."interested in developing a personal sonic language on the guitar, in an attempt to be able to do things I have been hearing, which were not possible though standard ways of playing the guitar."
Setting up a very nice open minded rhythm section with Mark Helias on bass and Gerry Hemingway on drums is certainly a good way to start and they support McManus regardless of how far out he tries to go. On tracks like The Radio Astronomers he sculpts pure noise, distortion and feedback before resolving into a more standard improvisation, like a SETI astronomer trying to hone in on an alien signal. Written In The Cracking Of The Ice has the leader playing splintered notes and runs against an abstract and challenging backdrop of bass and drums. The whole album is a challenging listen, but it is well worth the effort. McManus, Helias and Hemingway give their all in an attempt to develop a new improvisational paradigm.

VERYAN WESTON - Different Tessellations (EMANEM 5015; UK) Two very different versions of Weston's compositional framework based on a cycle of pentatonic scales. Tessellations I explores the possibilities of improvising with a pre-established form as a soloist and was conceived for acoustic piano. (The composer recorded a version in 2003 on a Lutheal piano in Brussels released as Emanem 4095). Only the first half of the 2010 version by the young concert and improvising pianist LEO SVIRSKY is included here because of CD durational limitations. His interpretation of the piece is very much his own. Tessellations II explores the possibilities of improvising with the same pre-established form in a group situation. The organisation of the piece, with its use of cycles and loops, was inspired by working with Trevor Watts' Moire Music in the 1980's. It was composed for THE VOCIFEROUS CHOIR, - nine a cappella singers mostly based around Graz in Austria - Anush Apoyan, Iris Ederer, Annette Giesriegl, Dorothea Jaburek, Sofija Knezevic, Siruan Kung, Franz Schmuck, Patrik Thurner & Veryan Weston. It is a mix of lines and layers that can be found in the polyphony of Renaissance contrapuntalists and the Pygmies of Central West Africa. There is no text or narrative, so the piece transcends any national border or literal meaning, resulting in a rhythmic tribute to the human voice that should have a very wide appeal. 76 minutes.

INGEBRIGT HAKER FLAKEN/HAKON KORNSTAD/JON CHRISTENSEN - Mitt Hjerte Altid Vanker I: Live At Oslo Jazz Festival (Compunctio 05; EEC) Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Hakon Kornstad deepen their dynamic co-operation on their new live album 'Mitt hjerte alltid vanker I' by adding the legendary jazz drummer Jon Christensen.
The discovery and recording of his grandmother's old hymns has opened a door to a musical treasury for double bass player Ingebrigt Haker Flaten. After recording the album Elise (Compunctio 2008) together with saxophonist Hakon Kornstad, they were both astonished over the synergy that was brought forth between themselves and the musical material. Whilst touring with the music from Elise the question eventually arose: How do we continue this musical journey? And if possible, how do we go deeper, further? The answer became: Jon Christensen!
On the new album 'Mitt hjerte alltid vanker I', recorded in the beautiful Kulturkirken Jakob during Oslo jazz festival in August 2009, we can enjoy music bursting with playfulness, improvisation and musical boldness. It was during this concert that Jon Christensen joined the duo Flaten/Kornstad for the first time. This pairing brings a feeling of openness, while at the same time adding a sense of enhanced presence and musical excellence.

INGEBRIGT HAKER FLAKEN/HAKON KORNSTAD - Elise (Compunctio 02; EEC) Ingbrigt Haker Flaken double bass and Hakon Kornstad saxophone and flutonette.
It sounds like Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Hakon Kornstad have always played the duo format together. In the album Elise, their interplay is natural, while at the same time searching and open, with the room's great acoustics acting as a third musician. It's hard to imagine a better way to take advantage of the double bass's and the saxophone's sound and possibilities to unite - from colorful multiphonics and soft moves with the bow via suggestive grooves to noisy tone explosions. The music, consisting mostly of Norwegian hymns, is recorded in a room with excellent acoustics at the new castle of Bjarka-Saby, south of Linkoping, Sweden, during two days in April 2008. Ingebrigt's grandmother, Elise Flaten, was a tradition bearer of a treasure trove of old hymns from Oppdal, Norway, and her interpretations of the songs were recorded by the Norwegian National Radio (NRK) in the 1970's. Transcriptions of these recordings form the basis of the album Elise.
Having two jazz musicians interpreting hymns reminds one of Jan Johansson's classical album 'Jazz pa Svenska' (Jazz in Swedish), and though 'Jazz pa Svenska' has never been a reference for the recording of Elise, there are similarities between the both albums. However, Ingebrigt and Hakon are not nostalgic in their interpretations. With their innovative playing, respect for tradition and childish curiosity as to where the music will take them, they have created an extremely dynamic and contemporary album, a sort of 'Jazz in Norwegian ..for the 21st century'! Keith Jarrett's Death And The Flower and the free improvisation Etter Elise (After Elise) is also part of the album and, together with the hymns, they create a natural whole.

DANGEROUS MUSICS [JON CORBETT/NICK STEPHENS/ROGER TURNER] - Dangerous Musics In '91 (Loose Torque 17; UK) Originally assembled by Jon Corbett, for BBC Radio's Jazz Today in April 1987, Dangerous Musics featured: Jon, Evan Parker, and two percussionists Will Evans and Thebe Lipare. Later, pianists replaced percussion with first Chris Burn and later Pat Thomas. According to my diary, the first gig with the Dangerous Musics trio heard on this recording was in April 1989 at The Plough Stockwell. The first five tracks are part of a session recorded by Jon (to cassette) at Rogers flat in Notting Hill. The cover photograph was taken the same day. A year or two later, after dinner at his house, Jon said "Oh! I found this down the back of the sofa - I don't know where it came from, I didn't record it." He passed me an unmarked cassette. (Ironically the day that Fay took the cover photo, she also took one of us in rubbish dump - sitting on a sofa! Punk Jazz? The negatives have, unfortunately, gone missing.) It's a live recording at an unknown venue, obviously by someone in the audience. It's a very lively room and judging by the small, but enthusiastic applause, not enough bodies to soak up the sound. I think it's a case of LowFi HiEnergy, but a typical Dangerous Musics gig. I remember playing the tape to Roger, we both thought that it would be nice to have some way of releasing it. Well, seventeen years or so later here it is. - Nick Stephens

J D ALLEN TRIO With GREGG AUGUST/RUDY ROYSTON - Victory! (Sunnyside 1280; USA) The JD Allen Trio's new album VICTORY! is one of those rare albums that stands to influence an entire generation of players. Emotionally impactful and surprisingly diverse, it's the most eclectic release so far by this extraordinary tenor sax-bass-drums unit who've been making potent albums sincethe 2007 debut I AM I AM.
I AM I AM didn't just explode out of nowhere - the tenor saxophonist and bandleader had been a sought-after sideman since the 90s. But it was an explosion, and four years later validates the fact that we called it a classic at the time. The new album seems to be the third and possibly climactic chapter of a triptych that began with I AM I AM and continued with 2009's Shine! Allen disarmingly calls his compositions 'jukebox jazz,' continuing the tradition of guys like Monk and Brubeck, whose compositions were as catchy as they were cerebral, and who sold hundreds of thousands of them as 45 RPM singles. Taking the form of a classical sonata - a theme and variations which end conclusively - the new album offers twelve succinct, interwoven compositions. With its direct, unflinchingly intense central theme which itself refers back to I AM I AM, this album takes the intensity of that album's breakthrough suite to the next level, and on to its logical conclusion. Yet while all the rigor of I AM I AM is also in full effect here, this new album explores considerably more emotionally and musically diverse terrain. And it ends optimistically.

CD $32

HIKASHU [MAKIGAMI KOICHI et al] - Ten Ten (Makigami 02; Japan) Makigami Koichi (vocals, theremin), Mita Freeman (electric guitar, sampler), Sakaide Masami (bass, effects), and Sato Masaharu (drums, voice) return with a new Hikashu album which shows that in their near 20-year existance as one of the most mind-bending art-rock ensembles, they've no intentions to slow down their creative output. They played a killer set at Tonic about two weeks ago and recorded another album while in town, and left us with copies of this, their most recent CD.
On opening title track "Ten Ten", Koichi and company start with a quiet incantation of throat singing and Laswell-ian dubby bass, punctuated by stabs of electric guitar and drums. From there, they move into dark drones, with Makigami overdubbing layers of whispers and spoken vocals along with some high-pitched theremin wails on theremin. The midsection of the record goes into a nice mix of meditative, sparse tones which remind me of some sort of ritual music; these moments are briskly interrupted by more of a spastic improv punk style which fans of old-school Boredoms would enjoy. The vibe here is ominous but relaxed; these guys have been playing together for years, and their chemistry definately comes through here. It's hard to discern at times what's improvised and what, if any of the music, is precomposed. Makigami fans won't be disappointed, and those of you who enjoy free-improv with more of a rock edge should take note as well. Recommended! -Mikey IQ Jones.
CD $22

HIKASHU [MAKIGAMI KOICHI et al] - Ikirukoto (Makigami 04; Japan) Makigami's band Hikashu has been around for more than 25 years and have evolved through different personnel. Hikashu have more than a half dozen releases and each one is worthy of hearing. This version features: Makigami on vocal, theremin & cornet, Mita Freeman on guitar & sampler, Shimizu Kazuto on pianos, organ & bass clarinet, Sakaide Masami on bass and Sato Masaharu on drums & percussion with special downtown guests Ikue Mori on electronics and Okkyung Lee on cello on one track each.
Hikashu switch styles, genres and/or strategies all over the place. The first piece, "Ikirukoto" has some free moments and funky sections with some greasy organ, groovy el. bass, strange/silly vocals and unexpected twists and turns. Ikue's electronic web sets up "Digital Frankenstein" which turns into another funky groove rocker with chicken scratch guitar and 80's new wave vocals via vocoder (?). Makigami does a fine job of switching characters by changing his voice like a crazed cartoon creature. There is something completely infectious and fun with this band. It is as if they have absorbed the best bits of the new wave era: B-52's, Devo, Pere Ubu, etc. And then they mutate into some impressive improv zones. On "Elaborate" Okkyung adds her sinister cello while the rest of the band plays soft, haunting sounds around Makigami's lovely, subdued voice. The enclosed booklet includes some striking, psychedelic black & white illustrations which adds to the charm of this thoroughly enchanting release. What I dig the most about this disc is that you never know which direction it will take, only that you will be smiling as the surprises keep coming. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

HIKASHU [MAKIGAMI KOICHI et al] - Nyunen [CD ep] (Makigami 03; Japan) Here's a brand spankin' new EP by Makigami Koichi and Hikashu, dropped off my the man himself after a smokin' set at the Stone with Sylvie Courvoisier and Ikue Mori this past Tuesday. Makigami tells me that the next Hikashu album, due out in the fall, will be "totally rock" after the more improv-centric "Ten Ten" album from last year. If this teaser EP is any indication, the man's not lying - this evokes nothing moreso than the early days of the band, with off-kilter grooves, catchy hooks, and Makigami doing what he does best - being both totaly in control and an absolute wildman at the same time. Opener "Elaborate" kicks off the proceedings with a mutant surf groove and one of the band's catchiest vocal hooks I've heard since anything on "Human Being," all packed into a nice tight 3:45 pop song. From there, "Digital Frankenstein" slows down the groove with heavily reverbed guitar, a pulsating bass groove, and Makigami playing theremin as well as sampling and pitch-shifting his voice, presumably into the monster of the title. "The Curry Master" finishes things off with a guitar groove anchoring things as Makigami's jaw harp & cornet and bassist Sakaide Masami's effects float in and out of the mix with the vocals, this time in duet with guitarist Mita Freeman. All in all, probably the only record I've heard in months that's as catchy as it is f-ed up, and at this point, you're either a Makigami fan or you're not, so what are you waiting for? They just don't make rock bands like this anymore, and that's a damn shame. - Mikey IQ Jones.

TWIG HARPER - Twig Harper (Hanson 237; USA) "First proper CD release from Nautical Almanac's Twig Harper. Twig was a big part in Hanson Records getting off the ground back in the mid-90s, so I'm very excited to release his debut solo glass mastered CD! Hot off the barefoot of his collaboration release with Daniel Higgs on Thrill Jockey. Twig Harper continues in the alternate universe tradition of his three volume Intuitive American Esoteric LP series, with 43 minutes psychedelic tape manipulations and droning synthesizer, electronic and organic sound mixed to brain warping perfection. Bell's, homemade electronics, synth, piano, strings, junk, horns and voice treated with tape for full-on musique concrete/sound poetry/electronic trance inducing confusion. Recommended for fans of Albert Hoffmann, Smegma, Pierre Henry, The Butthole Surfers, Maria Sabina, Dylan Nyoukis, Tobe Hooper, Criswell, Tod Dockstader, Sirhan Sirhan, The 13th Floor Elevators, Aliens, Humans, Jokes, and OBE's."

MEMORIZE THE SKY [MATT BAUDER/ZACH WALLACE/AARON SIEGEL] - Creeks (Broken Research 48; USA) "Memorize the Sky have played and recorded with Braxton, sure. That doesn't do much to explain what they accomplish in terms of reducing breadth of musical experience to focused motivic cells that continually produce new ideas that I would never think of. I could also run down the massive who's who type bio of each individual but suffice to say they are recording for a label focused on new American improvisation for a reason. When I became familiar with the band, and it really is an actual band, it was through playing with both Zach and Aaron who were not reductionists or drones but rather folks who REALLY got into a singe idea, thus motivic cells. The previous stuff I heard sounded like morning fog dissipating in the dawn. This one sounds like a rain forest, maybe? A temperate American rain forest? The weird world music cut on On The Corner?"

ANTHONY LEVIN-DECANINI - Pairings/Birth Plan (Broken Research 47; USA) "Roll-up keyboard, xo laptop, language master (an educational device that plays 2 second cards that have tape on them and can be rerecorded). Anthony is a really tremendous improviser in Chicago who I first saw with this post-rock [for lack of any other reasonably descriptive term] group Binges that was just mind-blowing. Essentially a prog duo with an incredible mathy drummer that has a great feel named Chris Robert and Anthony playing bass, guitar, sax, tapes, effects and percussion all at once [one line on one instrument, change etc etc] so it sounded like a disturbed version of On The Corner-era Miles but without any goofy noise or fusion tropes at all -just completely solid music. He gave me this solo disc last year and it has been in heavy, heavy rotation. I'm thrilled to be able to release it and am excited that people are finally giving me stuff that has all the same values of the music on brokenresearch without it having the same sounds or mechanics. This track reminds me of some Pole/Merzbow hybrid kinda slowed and throwed."

The Fitzcarraldo label -back in stock!

LUCA LO BIANCO With GASPARE PALAZZOLO/FRANCESCO GUAIANA et al - Ear Catcher (Fitzcarraldo 102; Italy) Gaspare Palazzolo on soprano & tenor sax & clarinet, Francesco Guaiana on guitar, Marco Di Fonte on cello, Luca Lo Bianco on basses and Fabrizio Giambanco on drums. Bassist Luca Lo Bianco can be heard on four of the five discs we just got in from the Fitzcarraldo label just as guitarist Francesco Guiana is heard on three of the five. Hence this label captures a certain scene in Sicily, Italy. Also, four of these discs feature small groups from trio to quintet and there are a number of other similarities in their overall sound.
"Girl with a Red Bike" kicks things off with a swell repeating line that features the cellist at the center playing the main theme. Mr. Lo Bianco has a gift for writing intricate lines for the guitar, sax and cello to play together in well-integrated layers. Luca wrote five of the nine songs with a couple of covers by Jimmy Giuufre and Suzanne Vega. Steel guitarist Fabio Rizzo guests on two tracks and does a fine job playing lines that harmonize superbly with the cello. This music is never dissonant yet it is well constructed and thoughtfully executed. The cello and sax work especially well together, something I haven't heard too often since the early days of Curlew. Although the guitar, cello & sax take the occasional solo, it is the writing and ensemble playing that is so memorable throughout. In a better world, these cats would get the credit they so well deserve and perhaps might be heard on WBGO-FM. Not very likely though. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

LORENZO COLLELA With FABIO RIZZO/LUCA LO BIANCO/FLAVIO LI VIGNI] - Out South (Fitzcarraldo 202; Italy) Lorenzo Colella on electric & acoustic guitars & songs, Fabio Rizzo on slide guitar, lap-steel & dobro, Luca Lo Bianco on acoustic & electric bass and Flavio Li Vigni on drums. The music here recalls wide open spaces, roots/rock at its best, thoughtful and haunting. The second song is dedicated to Jeff Buckley and is called "Jeff". Although the drums have that quick drum n' bass spin, the guitars are more laid back and effective for creating a somewhat somber mood. The music does a good job of evoking the ghost town of the mythical West. Somewhere in between the earthy reverie of Ry Cooder and the haunting sounds of those Jerry Granelli discs, that is where this music sits. The title of this disc, 'Old South', seems most appropriate since that is where it sounds like it is coming from. An odd paradox considering that these musicians are young and Italian. Both guitarists work extremely well together, combining electric, acoustic, slide & steel strings into a most effective blend. At times the rhythm team lays out while both guitars create most of the scenery and interaction or they just play skeletal rhythms. In some ways this music harks back to those soundtracks for the spaghetti westerns of the late sixites or seventies. Each piece is successful at evoking a different vibe or story. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

FRANCESCO GUAIANA TRIPTYQUE With LUCA LO BIANCO/RUGGERO ROTOLO - The Spoiled Tree (Fitzcarraldo 201; Italy) Francesco Guaiana on guitar, Luca Lo Bianco on acoustic & electric bass and Ruggero Rotolo on drums. Like most of the folks on this new label, I hadn't heard of any of these musicians before this disc. The first piece, "Altalena" has a lovely, laid-back groove and sultry melody, closer to roots/rock than jazz. The guitarist does a fine, jazzy tone with some of those Wes Montgomery-like chords. Guitarist Francesco often reminds me of Pat Metheny - his tone is pure and his playing quite inventive without any dark passages. One the interesting things about this trio is that they have a way of creating crafty music without (m)any references to normal jazz licks. "The Bridge" has a unique semi-electric guitar and hands-on-drums sound that evokes a lost day in the woods seeking calm within a stormy world. Their bassist, Lo Bianco, is also central to their sound and takes a couple of modest solos. I really dig the way the rhythm team will play this difficult repeating pattern while the guitarist plays an inspired solo that builds to a dramatic conclusion. Fans of Pachora or Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog would no doubt enjoy this little known gem. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

MANZILUNA [CALOGERO GENCO/LEONARDO GRIMAUDO/FABRIZIO BRUSCA/CARMELO GRACEFFA] - Manziluna (Fitzcarraldo 401; Italy) Calogero Genco on alto & soprano sax, Leonardo Grimaudo & Fabrizio Brusca on guitars and Carmelo Graceffa on drums & percussion. All four musicians are from Sicily, their music attempt to evoke the Sicilian culture. Since I have never been to Sicily, it would be difficult for me recognize this although the music is no less fascinating. Each musician contributed to the writing of different pieces and it seems obvious that this music is not completely improvised. Both guitarists play different parts, one often playing intricate lines with the saxist, the other doing a variety of different tasks. Every piece is well constructed and uses the different talents of each member most admirably. One piece ("Tziganski Tanz"), features some stunning acoustic and electric guitar interplay while the rhythm team plays swell skeletal punctuation underneath. There is so much great music here that it would impossible to describe it all since I hear so much craft and creativity in each piece. If you were going to start with one of the five discs on this little known label, this would be a perfect place to begin. Truly extraordinary stuff. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

ORCHESTRA IN-STABILE DIS/ACCORDO [FRANCESCO GUAIANA/LUCA LO BIANCO et al] - Live In Hamburg (Fitzcarraldo 301; Italy) The other four discs we recently got in from the Fitzcarraldo label featured a trio, two quartets & a quintet with some shared members. This disc features a fourteen piece orchestra with members of each of the other smaller groups. Two of the main members, Francesco Guiana (guitar) and Luca Lo Bianco (el. bass) take turns conducting and composing for this large ensemble. Although it begins with an explosive free intro, it soon calms down with what sounds like a conducted free excursion. As the piece unfolds we hear different sections and layers with selective solos interspersed as spice. Each of the five pieces is long and evolves through different sections and combinations of players. A good deal of preparation has gone into the writing and playing of this inspired ensemble. The Orchestra In-Stabile Dis/Accordo features double line-up of two guitars, two basses, two drummers, piano and six brass & reeds. All of these musicians are well-utilized and there is wealth of talent and craft on display throughout this entire wonderful disc. Considering that Francesco & Luca left us with five discs, each one is worthy of our time and consideration. So why wait, dig in.. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

MOTORPSYCHO - Roadwork Vol 4: Intrepid Skronk (Rune Grammofon 2110; EEC) This is the latest installment in Motorpsycho's ongoing series of live documents, Roadwork. It was recorded across Europe over a three-year period spanning 2008-2010, and is the first live record released featuring the Snah/Bent/Kenneth line-up of the band. As finding a complete show fit for release proved difficult, and modern technology makes it real easy to fake a chronology that would work well from a listener's point of view, Roadwork Vol. 4: Intrepid Skronk is a collection of moments from the last several tours Motorpsycho's undertaken since Kenneth Kapstad joined on drums in 2007, and features material from all phases of their career. The previous installment in this series, Vol 3.: The Four Norsemen Of The Apocalypse, released as part of the Haircuts DVD in 2007, was a recording of the Snah/Bent/Geb/Baard line-up of the band recorded at the Paradiso in Amsterdam in 2003. It documented a band disintegrating from ceaseless touring and ever-increasing differences of ambition: flaming out, but still bravely trying to -- and in parts actually managing to -- connect with the muse. Let's just say the tension is tangible. This is a different cup of tea. This is a living, breathing muscle-car of a rock band in full flight, stretching the limits of their imaginations (and sometimes the patience of their audience!) by going someplace new as often as possible -- creating a new collective identity for themselves and reimagining the material in the process. The focus of the two volumes -- and the series as a whole -- is the same though: the improvising rock band. The versions of the songs contained herein all have one thing in common: they are all really different from the studio incarnations of themselves. "All Is Loneliness," an acoustic five minute hymn in its original state on Demon Box (1993), is here an 18-minute electric behemoth slouching towards ...eh, Haarlem (?) to be born anew. The somewhat stilted orchestral psych version of "Landslide" from the 2002 Phanerothyme album has become something altogether more organic and jazzy here, and "Arnie Hassle"'s kozmic kayaking escapades from Heavy Metal Fruit (RCD 2093CD/RLP 3093LP) had grown into epic proportions by the time it hit Leipzig in the summer of 2010. It's this kind of reinvention that is the focus of everything going on here, and although the adrenalin wins out in places and the kinetic energy the boys amass sometimes becomes almost too much for them to handle, the power trio's antics make for an exciting listen. Riding the tiger indeed, the band sometimes tethers on the brink of fusion, jazz-rock, and other forms, but mostly manages to rein in the beast on the right side of taste. Mostly.

MOTORPSYCHO - Timothy's Monster [4 CD set] (Rune Grammofon BOX 104; EEC) Deluxe 4CD reissue of Timothy's Monster, originally released in late '94, is a certified classic, considered by many the best Motorpsycho album and often listed as the best Norwegian rock album in most significant listings since its release. Coming only a year after their dark and monumental Demon Box, this is a lighter, more adventurous, spacious and varied offering showing them blossoming into the band you have known and loved ever since, always on the move; forward, sideways, upwards, backwards. Spread over four CDs, you get the original album, the first version of the album that never got to be released and a very decent selection of rarities, outtakes and previously-unreleased tracks. Not only that, the package itself is nothing short of excellent, with its newly-designed box, cardboard sleeves, poster and 24-page booklet with extensive liner notes and anecdotes, priceless photos and notes about the recordings. This is simply a treasure trove for even the moderate Motorpsycho fan, if there is such a thing.

WALT DICKERSON With WILBUR WARE or JAMAALADEEN TACUMA/EDGAR BATEMAN Jr - 1976 (Candid/Why Not 79414; USA) One of the most innovative exponents of the art of playing the vibraphone, Philadelphian Walt Dickerson made his recording debut in 1961 and made a dozen or so LP's for various labels in the 60's, culminating in a date for MGM in 1965 (A Patch of Blue) featuring Sun Ra on piano. After that he did not venture into the studio again until some ten years later when Masahiko Yuh recorded 'Tell Us The Beautiful Things' - the first of two for his Why Not label. This, the elusive second recording of Walt Dickerson has never been available before outside Japan. It features Wilbur Ware on bass and Edgar Bateman's drums along with Jamaaladeen Tacuma on electric bass on one track and shows Dickerson at his very best.

TUBBY HAYES with TERRY SHANNON/JEFF CLYNE/PHIL SEAMEN - Tubby's New Groove (Candid 79554; USA) The music contained on this CD is among the most significant pieces of British Jazz history to have been discovered in a long long time. This first time ever release unearths a studio session which has lain forgotten since 1959 and which significantly is an addendum to what has been long seen as Tubby's first masterpiece - 'Tubby's Groove.' Tubbs is aided and abetted by the same musicians with Terry Shannon playing piano, Jeff Clyne on bass and the long lamented Phil Seamen adding his very special prodding and pushing percussion skills. Half a century later Tubby's immense talent still stuns listeners who can continue to marvel at his immense musicianship and creative charisma.

Two great Mario Schiano albums - limited time Sale!

MARIO SCHIANO/PAUL LOVENS/PETER KOWALD/PAUL RUTHERFORD/ERNST REIJSEGER - Used To Be Friends (Splasch 452; Italy) Featuring Mario Schiano on alto & soprano sax, Paul Rutherford on trombone, Ernst Reijseger on cello, Peter Kowald on bass and Paul Lovens on drums. The late Mario Schiano was one of leading legends of the Italian avant/jazz scene. He recorded more than twenty discs from 1973 to 2008 when he passed away. I had the good fortune to hear him at the Victo fest with Evan Parker, Barry Guy and Paul Lovens.

MARIO SCHIANO QUINTET/OCTET/BIG BAND - Sud (Splasch 501; Italy) Mario Schiano's CD retrospective continues on Splasch with this issue of dates from the '70s. Three quintets, two octets, and two big band recordings all focus on one important aspect of Schiano's oeuvre: his use of folk song as a means of composition and as a jumping point for improvisation. The most satisfying tracks here are all of them. In each setting, Schiano's voice rises above the choir of horns and winds and rhythm and leads the way to swinging-out fest. A stellar example is the title track, led off by Alfonso Viera's drums. The theme is cinematic, like John Barry meeting Basie for an adventure soundtrack. But Schiano's composition also holds within it various Italian folk songs, ballads, and a stirring tarantella played out by the brass section against a 12/8 rhythm before it segues into a samba and then a blues before the soloists carry it to the outer limits. Even here, with different musics sliding in and out of the mix -- seamlessly -- Schiano's own solo holds the folk song hostage for moment before freeing it up in a swirl of spattered, bleated notes and tonal extremes -- swinging all the while. Shimmering cymbals, timbral whispers, sheeny brass, and a quivering baritone usher in a forlorn reading of the harmony by the brass section while Schiano solos blues tall and bluesy up front. Other saxophonists are playing multiphonics in the background while a guitarist scrapes his strings atonally, but softly, behind the band's unifying harmonics. Only Schiano plays the dissident, and he's so lyrical and throaty it doesn't matter because he falls silky into the warm soft blanket the orchestra has created for him. With a Gil Evans-styled chart from the middle section to the fade, Schiano and his orchestra surrey forth with velvety elegance and grace while staying so far outside the traditional structures of the tune you wonder if it might be Sun Ra covering it. This is an awesome, warm, and edifying album, one of Schiano's best.

OPEN ORCHESTRA [STEFANO MALTESE et al] + JOHN TCHICAI - The Spiritual Man (Terre Sommerse 08; Italy) John Tchicai, Stefano Maltese & Pascale Innarella on saxes & flutes, Mario Fragiacomo & Angelo Olivieri on trumpets, Luca Bonvini & Tony Cattano on trombones, Gianni Lenoci on piano & electronics, Antonio Borghini on double bass and Marcello Magliocchi on drums & percussion. Both frontline saxists here (Maltese & Innarella) are well-known figures in Italian jazz, while special guest Mr. Tchicai is a legendary figure who lived in New York in the sixties and played with John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp & the New York Art Quartet. Although Mr. Tchicai is back living in Europe, he come to New York often enough to surprise us with continually resourceful playing. This disc consists of five long pieces and each one is spiritual in one way or another. Maltese's "Way to Nowhere" has an infectious bass-led groove and a number of inspired solos from five of the horn players. I dig the twisted background harmonies that the rest of the band employs while the soloists do their thing. Pianist Gianni Lenoci wrote "Bernoulli Strata" which features some strange trance-like floating horns with explosive piano, bass and drums up front. The bizarre horn harmonies recall the alien world of Sun Ra. Tchicai's "Spiritual Man" also has an eerie, ghost-like vibe at the center and strange call & response vocals. Too much! The writing and playing by the seven horns is often cosmic, great for evoking other worlds while we sit back in our chairs and observe! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

JAPANESE TRADITIONAL MUSIC [V.A.] - Vol 3: Koto And Shamisen - 1941 Recordings Of The Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (World Arbiter 2012; USA) The World Arbiter label presents 1941 recordings of the Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai -- masters of the koto and shamisen, heard with excerpts from theater and songs performed by many artists born in the Meiji period. They represent the earliest examples of ancient classical traditions. In the late 1930s, Japanese musicologists and experts completed years of work on a project to record their country's musical cultures, starting with ritualized shamanic traditions of the palace's gagaku, Buddhist chant, Noh theater, blind lute (biwa) players chanting medieval epics, a body of koto music, shamisens of kabuki dances, folk songs of workers, artisans, farmers, and children's songs. Five volumes, each with 12 78 rpm discs, comprised the leading performers of the time, many born into a Japan that newly opened to the West in 1868, taught by masters of an earlier isolated Japan. These recordings were meant to be given only to educational institutions and not sold. Right before starting their distribution, war broke out in 1941. Beate Sirota Gordon, age 22, accompanied the U.S. Army to Japan in 1946. She had grown up in Tokyo with her parents, Russian pianists whose pupils included Yoko Ono and her father. Beate secretly wrote a pioneering section on women's rights in Japan's post-war Constitution. During her mission, Donald Ritchie, a noted film historian, discovered a set of these recordings and gave them to her. Gordon presented them to Arbiter in the late 1990s. Aside from her copy, only one other complete set is known to have survived the war in Japan, as they were possibly destroyed in a warehouse bombing. The people of post-war Japan and the rest of the world now have the chance to hear these lost recordings of Japan's broad cultural legacy. On these recordings, one is struck by a sense of eternity belonging to a culture living in a mind-set of immortality and permanence, an ease buoying virtuosity and intricate musical forms, revealing a gripping authenticity that later performers hint at. This third of five discs contains significant examples of the koto and shamisen literature, dances from Kabuki and puppet theater traditions, many originating in the 1700s. Full descriptions are included in a lengthy booklet, while complete translations are on Arbiter's web site. Arbiter loves Japan and its arts, and is honored to revive lost master performers.

DANIEL MENCHE - Feral (Framework #8) (Sub Rosa 322; Belgium) This is #8 in Sub Rosa's Framework series -- an extension of their Concrete Electronics Noise series. Portland, Oregon-based sound artist Daniel Menche has established himself as a musician with a sense of focus and determination uncharacteristic in a genre known for its randomness and chaotic structure. Rather than creating "noise," he strives for order and cohesiveness. His presentation of sonic structures is similar to the way a writer depicts a story, an allegory seems to arise, which uses confusion as a symbol for the imaginative process of total sound purity; aural intensity is not a representation of confusion or the chaotic, but a concerted effort to provoke and stimulate the listener's imagination by generating intensely powerful sounds and music. Daniel Menche's work originates from the idea that there is no restriction to the potential sound sources and especially sonic energy. Any sounds -- all sounds are used and exploited to create the music. There are absolutely no barriers or biases in what can be used and have been used. Self-made and recorded sound sources, percussion and instruments are the main emphasis in creating a living and emotional feeling to Daniel Menche's form of contemporary music. Subtle and patient compositions rely on long, dense layers of droning sounds, while abrasive pieces rely on sounds amplified and processed to extreme levels, pushing the full spectrum of frequencies to the most threshold of limits. Menche has amassed a sizable discography on some of the most discerning independent labels in the world and is constantly performing live extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan with performances that are intense and powerful. Characterized as both extremely loud and patiently subtle, Daniel Menche's live performances define their own sonic presence, an entity that gives form to an emotional rawness with highly textural and dominating sounds. Limited to 700 copies.

BENJAMIN THIGPEN - Divide By Zero (Framework #7) (Sub Rosa 317; Belgium) This is #7 in Sub Rosa's Framework series -- an extension of their Concrete Electronics Noise series. Benjamin Thigpen, nomad, born in the United States, immigrated to Paris at the age of 31. He studied music, literature, philosophy and aesthetics. He now composes in European studios such as GRM, EMS, Visby and STEIM, as well as in his bedroom and on the train. After six years as a teacher at IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique), he currently teaches computer music in Italy, Belgium and occasionally Sweden, while also working as a freelance musical programmer and consultant. He makes music for loudspeakers: electroacoustic works, live computer performance and interactive music for instrument(s) and computer. His music is concerned with energy, density, complexity, movement, multiplicity and violence, and often incorporates space as a primary compositional parameter. He thinks that music does not exist in time but rather creates it, and considers that music is not the art of sound but the art of the transcendence of sound. This release includes music from 2003-2007. Limited to 500 copies.

FLORIAN HECKER - Speculative Solution [CD + Book] (Editions Mego 118; Austria) Editions Mego and Urbanomic are pleased to announce the release of Speculative Solution, a CD and book with contributions by Florian Hecker, Elie Ayache, Robin Mackay and Quentin Meillassoux. Originally commissioned by Urbanomic and developed over the last year, this collaborative project brings together Hecker's sonic practice and psychoacoustic experimentation with philosopher Quentin Meillassoux's concept of "hyperchaos" -- the absolute contingency of the laws of nature. In an apparent departure from Hecker's previous release Acid In The Style Of David Tudor (EMEGO 094CD), the four titles featured on Speculative Solution contain a series of micro-chronics and sequences of auditory contingencies, ranging from extreme stasis to the most dynamic intensities, crisp dramatizations of what Meillassoux calls in his text "extro-science worlds." As Mackay states in his contribution to the book, Hecker's composition "participates in a circuit in which it, the accompanying texts, and diverse other objects, enter into a perpetual catalysis that must annihilate all priority, representation, reference, and even entity." Both "scripture and prescription," Speculative Solution invites its users to integrate its sonic and textual components, as they enter into an accelerative cycle, becoming "truly 'literalist' marks which have no reason to be as they are, and which could have been -- and still could be, at every moment -- otherwise." With Speculative Solution, Hecker proposes that the concepts of absolute contingency and hyperchaos offer a rigorous new alternative to the employment of chance and randomness in avant-garde composition. It is recommended to listen to Speculative Solution on loudspeakers at high volume. Headphone use is not advised. Frequent recitation of the included texts is also indicated. Speculative Solution is Hecker's 13th release with (Editions) Mego. It comes in an embossed, deluxe box with a bilingual (English/French) 160-page book and 5 metal balls (X 3,969mm). Typesetting by Tina Frank and Elvira Stein. CD mastered by Rashad Becker. Available only in this format.

BARRY GRAY - Stand By For Adverts: Rare Jingles, Jazz And Advertising Electronics (Trunk 039; UK) Trunk has uncovered 81 tracks of unissued advertising electronics, jingles and jazz by none other than the master composer behind Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and UFO, Barry Gray. From infectious ditties for new banana cereal to raw, experimental sounds for a new space age washing machine, Barry Gray penned a vast amount of catchy, weird and sometimes comical numbers, all now available for the first time ever. These unique and rare recordings by one of the UK's most prolific and successful composers have all come from the Barry Gray Archive. They date from 1958 to about 1965, and cover Gray's advertising and jingle career at that time. He was a busy, creative man, working across a vast spectrum of products, from small local stores to large corporations and banks. The work is typically British, in some cases very experimental (with early tape loops, heavy reverb and echo) and in many ways dangerously catchy. Known worldwide for his soundtracks to the classic Gerry Anderson productions such as Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Space 1999, this unusual release sheds a welcome light on this composer's early work and has many of the classic Gray hallmarks his fans know and love. ANDREW LEIGH - Magician (Sunbeam 5080; UK) Recorded after bassist Andy Leigh left Spooky Tooth and before he joined Matthews Southern Comfort (enjoying a #1 hit with "Woodstock"), this long-lost LP first appeared in the summer of 1970, and has barely been heard since. Recorded in London in the late '60s, it boasts guest appearances from members of Blossom Toes, Spooky Tooth, Fleurs De Lys and Titus Groan, as well as cult figures such as Reg King, Gary Farr and Gordon Jackson. A blend of gentle ballads and jamming rockers, spiced with flute, sitar, wah-wah and more, it makes its CD debut here, complete with rare photographs, a previously-unheard bonus track and full notes from the man himself.

CYNARA - Cynara (Kismet 4006; UK) Fronted by keyboard maestro Michael Tschudin (previously leader of Boston psych faves The Listening), this short-lived quintet played progressive rock with a jazzy, percussive edge. Their sole album was originally released in August 1970, and boasts impressive interplay throughout, with superb musicianship including a guest appearance from Elvin Jones on drums. Digitally remastered and finally available on CD for the first time ever.
CD $17

JUMP - Jump (Kismet 4007; UK) Made by a short-lived quartet who'd formed on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip in the spring of 1971, this lost progressive pop-rock gem was originally released that summer. A catchy blend of hard-edged pop and rock, with meaty guitar and organ interplay, it boasts the talents of long-term Iggy Pop and Tom Petty sideman Scott Thurston, and deserves a far wider audience than it has enjoyed thus far. Digitally remastered and available on CD for the first time ever. Liner notes included.

THUNDER AND NOISES - King Of The Black Sunrise (Kismet 4008; UK) In the wake of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, a large number of psychedelic heavy rock three-pieces formed. The explosive Thunder And Roses were one of the best. Consisting of singer/guitarist Chris Bond, bassist Tom Schaffer and drummer George Emme, they hailed from Philadelphia and issued only one album, which originally appeared in July 1969 and makes its long-overdue CD debut here. Digitally remastered.

JEAN-PHILIPPE GOUDE - Drones (Lion Prod. 638; Canada) "In the beginning there was the piano. As soon as he had mastered the basics, Jean-Philippe Goude discovered the spell of melancholy while working on a little musical piece: an etude ringing out in the style of a somber hymn. Not the dead meat smells of somberness that, according to Picabia, serious people emit, but the earthen gravity of an abyss dug by life itself. Everything is the result of this bedazzlement. At 11 years old, Jean-Philippe Goude closed his eyes. When his eyelids finally re-opened, he could only see turquoise bubbles. The times had changed. The color was set by Sgt Peppers and the Beatles. Goude then discovered the minimalist movement through the work of Philip Glass and Terry Riley; this gave him insight into unexpected perspectives. Goude enrolled at the Pantin Academy of Music, where he studied with Irene Jarsky. Parallel to these studies, Goude worked with with percussionist Olivier Cole, assisted by electronics wizard Francois Gingle, who modified their synthesizers in order to obtain the weirdest possible sound. Goude released his first album (with Cole) in 1975, Jeunes Annees (Saravah). A few months later, with Bernard Paganotti's band Weidorje, Goude initiated a rock adventure which ultimately resulted in a second album, Drones (Polydor, 1979)--an album which features an impressive gathering of some of the biggest names in late '70s underground French rock, including: Richard Pinhas (rhythmic synthesizer), Francois Auger (drums); Michel Ettori: (guitar), Patrick Gauthier (flute, synthesizer, piano, mini-moog), Manu Katche (drums), and Jean-Louis Rizet (mixing & special effects). Goude's proto-electronica cosmic loops and moog melodies now find themselves coupled with tough prog drum beats and other elements of rock music; Drones mixes solo keyboard pieces like 'Coma' and 'Duo' with group oriented pieces: 'Dies Irae' is a Zeuhl rock scorcher; 'Machine' uses a string quartet as the foundation for synthesizer musings by Goude and Richard Pinhas; 'Trepidanse' is a playful piece for dueling synthesizers. Although the Weidorje influence is evident on some numbers, Jean-Philippe Goude takes his music well beyond the Zeuhl trend. He offers a very personal approach to music, which contributed to the album's initial success, and has ensured that its cult status has lasted until the present day."

DELTA SWAMP ROCK [V.A.] - Sounds from the South: At the Crossroads of Rock, Country and Soul [2 CD + Book set] (Soul Jazz 243; UK) "Soul Jazz Records' Delta Swamp Rock is a definitive guide to the music of the southern states of USA created between 1968-1975 where country, rock and soul met. TONY ALLEN With AFRICA 70 or AFRO MESSENGERS - Afro Disco Beat: Jealousy/Progress/No Accomodation For Lagos/No Discrimination [2 CD set] (VampiSoul 90; EEC) Vampisoul presents a complete '70s anthology of the drummer and music director of African superstar Fela Kuti's band Africa 70, from 1968 until 1979, the creators of Afrobeat. This monster pack includes Tony's first four solo albums: Jealousy (1975), Progress (1976), No Accomodation for Lagos (1978), and No Discrimination (1979). The first three produced by Fela Kuti himself and with Africa 70; the last one with Tony's band The Afro Messengers. Complete extensive liner notes inside. Mild-mannered, but iron-willed, Tony Allen is the co-creator of Afrobeat, and one of the most distinctive and in-demand drummers on the planet. No one swings like this Nigerian rhythm man -- with that amazing, loose-limbed, poly-rhythmic technique that has powered some of the funkiest and most challenging dance music ever created. Best known for his involvement with the late, great Fela Kuti, Tony Allen is very much more than Fela's -- or anyone else's -- drummer. Bandleader, composer and husky rapping vocalist, Tony Allen has recorded a string of groundbreaking solo albums since parting company with Fela in 1978 -- sides that draw together African rhythm, funk, jazz, soul and hip hop. His inimitably propulsive skinwork has enhanced the work of an amazing range of artists, from Afro-giants Manu Dibango, Ray Lema and Sunny Ade to British-Indian songstress Susheela Raman and Californian rock-rappers Spearhead. Complete extensive liner notes included.

ARMANDO PERAZA - Wild Thing (VampiSoul 27; EEC) World famous Cuban percussionist Armando Peraza -- a natural talent, polished and powered by friends such as Mongo Santamaria and Patato -- began his American career in 1940s San Francisco when he joined Slim Gallard's band. He later joined Dave Brubeck, and finally Cal Tjader called him for his band. Since then, he has performed on more than 100 albums and is the songwriter of more than 40 songs. Some of these works include collaborations with Mongo Santamaria and Carlos Santana. It was Tjader, fully aware of Peraza's enormous talent, who in June 1968 got him into a studio to record this work, his only album as a solo artist (with friends such as Tjader and Chick Corea helping the main man). Wild Thing follows the best Latin tradition but with percussion that creates a new musical expression: "Cubop." Combining Jazz and Afro-Cuban idioms, Armando's talent lies in the complexity and originality of the rhythms he developed. On this album he was free to explore and build as he saw fit.

RICHARDO RAY ORCHESTRA - Let's Get Down To The Real Nitty Gritty (VampiSoul 17; EEC) A very wild album from Ricardo "Ritchie" Ray, sort of a mix of Latin soul styles in the mode of work by Mongo Santamaria. Featuring a number of '60s soul covers done in a Latin mode, touched with a bit of garage soul vocals and upbeat and playful throughout. The original "Soul Mexico" features a storming chanting verse that then unwinds into a catchy chorus with overlapping melodic lines. The whole album's great.
CD $12

PETE RODRIGUEZ - El Rey Del Boogaloo (VampiSoul 23; EEC) There is one only word to describe this album: BOOGALOO! Pete Rodriguez and his band certainly were one of the best combos of the golden Latin soul era, and this compilation certainly holds the strongest numbers. Hard funk and fast beats all the way through, this is a fantastic album of Latin soul -- proof of why Pete was known as the "King Of The Boogaloo" during the '60s. Every song sounds like the group's having a non-stop party. Edgy and inspired playing, heavy piano lines, storming bass backing the grooves, swinging timbales and some shouted and catchy lyrics mostly in English.

ALDEMARO ROMERO & MONNA BELL - La Onda Nueva en Mexico (VampiSoul 87; EEC) Originally released in 1970, La Onda Nueva en Mexico has remained a cult object among those searching for "rare grooves" for its completely unique concept of combining traditional Mexican music arranged by Venezuelan Aldemaro Romero, sung by a Chilean pop singer Monna Bell and orchestrated by Mexican jazz musicians. A complete artistic achievement recovered by VampiSoul 37 years later. Few people have managed to combine aspects of classical, popular and experimental music from the second half of the 20th century in a brilliant and original way. In 1970, Bell asked Romero to record an album together in his "Onda Nueve" (New Wave) style: a mixture of modern jazz orchestrations, the hypnotism of the bossa nova guitar, Venezuelan folklore melodies and extremely original and complex vocal structures set to the fast-paced 3/4 rhythm typical of the Venezuelan joropo. Victor Ruiz played bass; Alvaro Lopez, Salvador and Felix Agueros (of Rabbits and Carrots) were on drums and percussion; Julio Vera was on congas, and vocals were performed by Los 4 Soles y Gasparin. Enrique Sida and Jaime "la vaca" Shagun were on the trombones, Tomas "la negra" Rodriguez, Armando "el Kennedy" Noriega and Rodolfo "Popo" Sanchez were on the saxophones; Ramon Flores and the legendary Chilo Moran were on the trumpets, and Pablo Jaimes, Jorge Ortega, Enrique Neri and Aldemaro himself were on electric and acoustic pianos, among other well known musicians. Gualberto Castro, a talented singer and arranger from the group los Hermanos Castro, also sang on "El Balaju," exchanging verses with Monna. All of the musicians felt free to bring in any ideas and to improvise during the 20 days of recording. The result was an explosion of tonalities that, in spite of being essentially popular traditions, revealed something exceedingly unique and modern.

TOTEM - Totem (VampiSoul 35; EEC) Totem was one of the most important mass phenomena in Uruguay's musical history. Formed in 1970 by the most internationally recognized Uruguayan musician in the latest 30 years, Ruben Rada, Totem meant the beginning and rise of Candombe-beat and one of the most solid pilars of rock in the Rio de La Plata. Candombe is an Afro-Uruguayan ryhtm style, existing only in Uruguay and based in the sound of three types of drums: "chico," "repique" and "piano." The combination of the rhythmic patterns played in each drum creates a polyrythm texture never-heard-of before in the world. The fate of Candombe is tightly fixed to the survival of the black community in Uruguay, and of their culture. In countries like Argentina, both black people and candombe have dissapeared. Rada has been a great preserver of black culture in Uruguay and has managed to integrate the values of that community into the cultural identity of Uruguay, through his music and lyrics. And here, we present you the essential first album that Totem released, with an extra song, "Mi Pueblo."
