Chicago saxophonist/composer Greg Ward (now based in NYC) is an integral player in a number of distinct coteries of the contemporary music scene. In addition to leading his bands, Fitted Shards and The Greg Ward Sextet, Ward recently recorded with electronica artist Prefuse 73, arranged and conducted orchestra for Lupe Fiasco, received a commission from the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra (for a concerto for jazz quartet and string orchestra), and will be recording and performing with renowned rock group Tortoise. In 2002, the late saxophone legend Fred Anderson hand-picked Ward to curate the Wednesday night jam sessions at his club The Velvet Lounge. Ward has also worked with artists such as Von Freeman, Frank Wess, Al Jarreau, Carl Allen, Rufus Reid, Jeff Parker, Brian McNight and Hamid Drake, performing extensively at major venues and festivals in the States and abroad. He is currently a member of the Occidental Brothers Dance Band International, Mike Reed's People, Places, and Things, Blink, Loose Assembly, The Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, Hamid Drake's Bindu, and Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls. He has recorded for the Roguart, 482 Music, Thirsty Ear, Clean Feed, and Delmark labels.
Ward's diverse musical interests have led him to explore the world of classical and crossover music as a composer and performer. Recent commissions include a chamber work for ICE (International Contemporary Ensemble), a new ballet for the Peoria Ballet Company, and a septet for Gallery 37's Downtown Sound Gallery Composer's Series. In June of 2007, he composed a quartet for sax, cello, guitar, and percussion (Infatuation With the Flame) that was performed as a part of the International Contemporary Ensemble's ICE Fest 2007 and as part of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Series.

Digital manipulations combine improvisations by Yasuhiro Yoshigaki, Kumiko Takara and others with Vognsen's symphonic orchestrations and field recordings, creating a mix of distorted atmospheres, ambient noises and rushes of rhythm.

STATE CHANGES ACCORDING TO A WIND [MARTIN VOGNSEN] With KUMIKO TAKARA/YASUHIRO YOSHIGAKI - King Hussein Bridge (JVT 01; EEC) This part of Martin Vognsen's SCATAW project features a trio with Yasuhiro Yoshigaki (drummer in Altered States, Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Orchestra, ROVO) and Kumiko Takara (percussionist in Bondage Fruit, P.O.N., Warehouse). Spontaneously created on miscellaneous percussion, semi-acoustic dobro and sparse electronics the music takes improvisation through a fresh mix of crisp sounds, meticulous rhythms and enigmatic melodies. Together the 10 distinctive tracks compose a highly dynamic suite of ramshackle, raw, rattling musical energy.
CD $18
KATSURA YAMAUCHI With SALMOSAX ENSEMBLE - Asani (JVT 04; EEC) The remarkable musician and composer Katsura Yamauchi performing on his own and - for the first time on CD - leading a group of fellow saxophonists. Yamauchi's solo consists of serene compositions and deeply focused improvisations with a gentle sense of tone and time. The ensemble premieres the idea of "semi-automatic improvisation", a system created by Yamauchi, in addition to expressive tunes and a beautiful ballad, all merging the abstract and the familiar.
Katsura Yamauchi: Sopranino and alto saxophones; with Salmosax Ensemble workshop members: Chiharu Mizukawa, Kota Furusawa, Shiori Teshima, Yoshiomi Shuto, Yuka Takemoto. Recorded at Asami shrine in Beppu, Japan, May 24th, 2009.

ELLIOTT SHARP//JACK WOMACK - Binibon (Henceforth 110; USA) Elliott Sharp, guitars, saxophones, bass, synthesizers, clarinets, percussion, drum and sample programming; libretto by Jack Womack.
The Binibon was a cafe and 24-hour hangout on 2nd Avenue at 5th Street in the East Village, a nexus for artists, musicians, neighborhood characters and bohemians true and faux. It was a place in which I spent many an hour drinking bottomless cups of terrible coffee during 1979-81, meeting people, reading, hatching projects, observing, listening. Typical guests at the Binibon might include various No Wavers and Lounge Lizards; bebopper Jimmy Lovelace and free-jazz gypsy Don Cherry; Jean-Michel Basquiat; William Burroughs; Quentin Crisp; Kid Creole, Coatamundi, and Coconuts; Johnny Thunders; Keith Haring; Allen Ginsberg; Liquid Liquid; avant-garde filmmakers, actors and directors famous and non-. I was friendly with the all of the staff at Binibon and the events that unfolded affected me greatly. Jack Henry Abbott was a talented writer, as well as an imprisoned killer who became the protege of author Norman Mailer who helped sponsor his release into a halfway house on 3rd Street. He was well-known in the neighborhood and in the local press. I was in the Binibon that summer night in 1981 after a gig and left just as Abbott was entering with his entourage and found out about the murder a few hours later. This tragic event shocked us all and came at a time of transformation in the neighborhood, its culture, its daily life, its real-estate, and its future. Soon after, I began thinking about how I might tell the story of this event. This work is the result of over 20 years of memory and reflection. The song 'Irreversibility' was written that summer shortly after the murder. It seemed appropriate to include it within Binibon as it well reflected the mood of the 'hood at that time.
I knew that Jack Womack was the perfect writer to translate this project into words and asked him to create a script in 2004. We first presented the work as a series of readings at the 2005 Howl Festival. It was presented again in this form at Roulette in 2007 which led to The Kitchen commissioning the work for a full theatrical presentation. I soon met Beth Morrison who was to become my producer and through her, Tea Alagic who became the stage director. I'm grateful to all of our collaborators and supporters who helped bring BINIBON to life. Listening just to the audio documentation of the performances led me to this manifestation of Binibon as a radio play.

TOCALOCA [TOCA LOCA: SIMON DOCKING/AIYUN HUANG/GREGORY OH] - Shed (Henceforth 109; USA) There are the trappings of chamber music tradition, there are those in search of innovation at all costs, and then, there's Toca Loca. Immersed in the multivalent histories their music invokes while enslaved to none, this Canada-based trio, consisting of pianists Gregory Oh, Simon Docking and percussionist Aiyun Huang. The disc is an affirmation and a departure, blazing trails while confirming the rock-solid technique and boundless energy of a group that continually defines its own boundaries.

HIGH ZERO FESTIVAL OF EXPERIMENTAL IMPROVISED MUSIC [V.A. With JOE McPHEE/JAAP BLONK/LUKAS LIGETI/LE QUAN NINH/C SPENCER YEH et al] - 10th Anniversary: The First Ten Years [DVD + CD] (Recorded 024; USA) 3 hours of live action! Also includes a CD of six strange gems from High Zero history! Baltimore's critically acclaimed High Zero is perhaps the most unusual festival of new music in the country, mixing no-holds barred experimentation on a large scale with all new, spontaneous collaborations between some of the most interesting musicians on the planet. Since 1999, the festival has inspired radical methods and brought utopian intentions to hundreds of varied performances, on stage and on the street.
This 10th anniversary DVD and CD gives a small taste of what audiences have experienced in the last ten years at the festival that Signal to Noise Magazine called "A fertile laboratory of musical possibility without equal."
Featuring amazing performances by: Jim Baker, John Berndt, Jac Berrocal, Nicole Bindler, Jaap Blonk, Tom Boram, Dan Breen, Jeff Carey, Audrey Chen, Dan Conrad, John Dierker, Michael Formanek, Eric Franklin, Chiara Giovando, Dave Gross, Daniel Higgs, Sofia Jernberg, Michael Johnsen, Bonnie Jones, Lukas Ligeti, Thomas Lehn, Kyp Malone, Ben Manley, Kaffe Matthews, Joe McPhee, Sean Meehan, Phil Minton, Scott Moore, Stewart Mostofsky, Lexie Mountain, Ian Nagoski, Le Quan Ninh, Catherine Pancake, Greg Pierce, Eve Risser, Matana Roberts, Marina Rosenfeld, Christine Sehnaoui, Roger Turner, Fuyuki Yamakawa, C. Spencer Yeh, & many other great improvisors!
DVD + CD for $20
CHRISTINE SEHNAOUI With KYLE BRUCKMANN/AUDREY CHEN/UCHIHASHI KAZUHISA/ROGER TURNER/FORBES GRAHM et al - A Second Shadow: High Zero Festival 2006 (Recorded 023; USA) Experimental saxophony takes another huge leap forward in the exceptional music of Lebanese/French musician Christine Sehnaoui. Her use of extraordinary extended techniques and compositional extremes recalls some of the best music of Michael Doneda and Alessandro Bosetti, but goes beyond with a fierce identity all its own. On this CD, she is heard solo and in a variety of free ensembles with a wide variety of great musicians, including Japanese guitarist Uchihashi Kazuhisa, British drummer Roger Turner, and Lexi Mountain of the Lexi Mountain Boys.

FUYUKI YAMAKAWA - Blackwater Vision Quest: High Zero Festival 2006 (Recorded 022; USA) Yamakawa's High Zero solo concert (presented here in its entirety) was a shocking, eerie, mind-blowing experience, during which his massively amplified heartbeat controlled not only the acoustics of the room, but also lights, creating a hallucinogenic stroboscopic cast to the performance. At the high point of this visceral and exalted performance, Yamakawa stopped his heart, using yogic techniques, creating an incredible sense of prolonged time and physical connection with the audience. Throughout the rest of the disk, his throat singing, and use of electronic and acoustic extremes of vocal technique result in highly unusual improvised music with experimental improvisors Jenny Graf, Chiara Giovando, Forbes Graham, Stewart Mostofsky, Michael Muniak, Jackie Stewart, and Baltimore's shockingly talented human beatboxer, Shodekeh.

SCOTT MOORE With PHIL MINTON/SAMUEL BURT/ROSE HAMMER et al - Pallatially Palpable: High Zero Festival 2005 (Recorded 020; USA) Unkown genius, former frontman of SINK MANHATTAN and RAMUMBUS, instrument inventor, berserk performer, speaker-in-tongues, and the man who opened the first High Zero Festival's first set, Scott Moore at last is documented on CD! Tremendous upheavals ensue..
This record includes an amazing Lucier-esque "pure sound exploration" solo for his clacking wood instruments, and great first-time collaborations with Samuel Burt (clarinet, electronics), Rose Hammer (reeds), Caleb Johnston (electronics), Mazen Kerbaj (prepaired trumpet), Phil Minton (voice), and Melissa Moore (inventions).
CD $12
PHIL MINTON With AUDREY CHEN/TATSUYA NAKATANI/FERAL CHOIR et al - The Enigma Carols: High Zero Festival 2005 (Recorded 019; USA) Phil Minton will be well known to anyone who follows avant-garde vocal music, having been a pioneer in the field, one of the greats of the first wave of British free music, and a constantly developing and changing personna. His "Feral Choir," a large vocal ensemble he cultivates and directs in different parts of the world with different membership, is in full force here, producing primal animal hive music of the highest order.
Also on the bill all great first-time collaborations with Samuel Burt (computer, clarinet), Audrey Chen (cell, voice), Claire Cooper (harp), Peter Jacquemyn (bass), Caleb Johnston (electronics), Scott Moore (voice, tuba), Tatsuya Nakatani (percussion), and Scott Rosenberg (reeds). Recorded at High Zero, 2005.

THUS [NEIL FEATHER/JOHN BERNDT] - Tripod Mind (Recorded 018; USA) Neil Feather and John Berndt's development of a private musical language as THUS since 1992 is one of the oddest and most under-documented monoliths in experimental music. Building new idioms and approaches on top of an orchestra of invented instruments of their own design, their music is a fertile universe of its own, which, though it will appeal to the avant- and electro-acoustically-inclined, really doesn't sound like anything else. Strings bong in contrary motion, glass rattles in expansive soundscapes, reeds whir with strange doppler effects, and it all hangs together, a cargo cult in reverse, a culture of two.
This first CD documenting the group is culled from a major concert at The Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, and in addition to their exotic orchestra of instruments, also involves TRAD, a computerized circular-panning system that allows the musicians to spin their instruments around the room in varying speeds and directions independently, which in combination with the museums complex acoustics creates some thrilling psycho-acoustic effects.
CD $12
SUSAN ALCORN With JOE McPHEE/ANDREA PARKINS/LE QUAN NINH et al - Concentration: High Zero Festival 2004 (Recorded 017; USA) A beautiful record documenting the amazing Texan avant-garde string player Susan Alcorn, whose lush, lyrical, fluid sounds have been a focus of great attention in recent years. Here, in classic High Zero style, are documented first collaborations with Karen Stackpole (gongs), Le Quan Ninh (percussion), Joe McPhee (reeds, trumpet), Audrey Chen (cello, voice), Andrea Parkins (keyboards), Todd Whitman (reeds), Jesse Quatro (voice, electronics), and Jason Willett (improvised recording studio).
At times dark and gothic, at others, gorgeous and weird, it is a disk containing some very live music!
CD $12
TODD WHITMAN With JOE McPHEE/SABIR MATEEN/ANDREA PARKINS/AUDREY CHEN et al - Zeppelins Erste Grosse Fahrt: High Zero Festival 2004 (Recorded 016; USA) Todd Whitman's first record is also perhaps the strangest release on Recorded to date. Whitman is a highly influential but massively under-document reed, saw, and electronics player who has produced some of the scariest acoustic music heard on the East Coast. The CD starts out with an amazing overdubbed "double solo" of musical saw and plastic cones on amplified metal--there is no word in the English language to capture its bizzar, otherwordly sensibility. The rest of the CD documents some very hard-to-characterize sets of music with Jackie Blake (reeds), Dan Breen (various), Audrey Chen (cello, etc.), Joe McPhee (reeds), Sbir Mateen (reeds), Andrea Parkins (keyboards), Stanley Schumacher (trombine), and Bob Wagner (electronic and acoustic percussion). During these sets, the ghost of jazz is resurrected in the context of electro-acoustic freakouts, and made to answer a number of difficult questions. In the end, it is the electronic music that is arrested and carted off to jail. Or something. Anyway, recorded live at High Zero 2004
CD $12
MICHAEL JOHNSON With RICARDO ARIAS/MICHEL DONEDA/MICHAEL ZERANG et al - Patience Tryouts: High Zero Festival 2003 (Recorded 015; USA) The first CD by one of the great minds of North American Experimental music, recorded live at High Zero 2003. Michael Johnson is both hier to the crown of David Tudor (for his incredible investigagtions into live performance of non-linear analog brains of his own creation) and also one of the most distinctive and brilliant improvisors on saw, reed, and other varied gambits. His sensibility is cross-indexed here with some extremely strong flavors: Ricardo Arias (Balloons), John Berndt (inventions, massively amplified typerwriter), Chris Cooper (guitar mutation), Michel Doneda (soprano Sax), Neil Feather (inventions), Katt Hernandez (violin), and Michael Zerang (percussion). The disk is composed from overlaid live performances with brilliant post-performance editing by Chris Cooper, which makes it an entirely unique listening experience.
CD $14
PAOLO ANGELI With DAN BREEN/AUDREY CHEN/MICHAEL EVANS/NEIL FEATHER/KATT HERNANDEZ - Mede: High Zero Festival 2003 (Recorded 014; USA) A pithy document of the amazing Sardinian guitarist/instrument inventor/singer at the 2003 High Zero Festival. Powerful meetings with Dan Breen (clavinet, electronics), Audrey Chen (voice, cello), Katt Hernandez (violin), and a once-in-a-lifetime trio with Neil Feather (inventions) and Mike Evans (percussion) that was a major advance in the continuum between, say, Spike Jones and Fred Frith.
CD $12
ANDREW HAYLECK - The Disappearing Floor (Recorded 013; USA) A masterpiece of extremelty conetemporary [sic] sounding electro-acoustic composition by Andrew Hayleck. Hayleck's music on this disk combines subtle field recordings, his own bowed gong inventions, and original software processing paradigmsto create something on the edge of human intention. A strong sense of feeling and mystery pervades this work, which is among the most interesting of new composition with computers. His sense of composition, memory, displacement of source, and space is amazing.
CD $12
NEIL FEATHER - Roto-Melon: High Zero Festival 2002 (Recorded 012; USA) Instrument inventor Neil Feather is one of the most fascinating, and currently under-documented cultural figures on the East Coast. This record includes two highly interesting sets of improvised music which only scratch the surface of his activities: an explosive and tranced-out set with inventor Carly Ptak and reedsman John Dierker, and a collective improvisation on a 20' string instrument of Feather's creation by the seven members of The Red Room Collective.
CD $12
OLUYEMI THOMAS With JIM BAKER/ANDREW HAYLECK/HELENA ESPVALL-SANTOLERI - Before The Beginning: High Zero Festival 2002 (Recorded 011; USA) Documentation of extremely unusual sets from the High Zero 2002, with Oleyumi Thomas (reeds, percussion), Jim baker (piano, synthesizer), Andy Hayleck (hydrophones, amplified gong/wire), and Helena Espvall-Santoleri (cello). Oluyemi Thomases vocal, repetative bass clarinet approach has a unique quality and his highly imaginative improvising is explored in a series of contrasting settings. Gives "cosmic music" a good name.
For the last 15 minutes Oluyemi performs in an incredible duo with Helena on acoustic cello, both performers swirling the lines righteously together. Once more taking their time to connect and blend their spirits into a wonderful web of splendid tapestry. Our good friend, Oluyemi does it right every time!
CD $12
IAN NAGOSKI - Effortless Battle (Recorded 010; USA) "Baltimore musician Ian Nagoski cites electrical transformers and cicadas as strong musical influences on his work, two sound making entities that people come in contact with almost daily during some periods of life, but objects that most people wouldn't be willing to concentrate on for anything more than a few minutes. This information in indispensable when examining Nagoski's music, as its ambient, slowly developing nature. Effortless Battle begins with the disc's thirty-one minute title track, the soundtrack to a Catherine Pancake film of the same name. It begins with a very subdued, but dense fluttering, but nearly five minutes in, Nagoski utilizes a buzz which pans from left to right so vigorously that its circular motion seems almost baroque (by Nagoski's standards, of course). Slowly, though, a more constant tone takes control, a sound that makes up the majority of the rest of the track. Vaporous sounds slowly emerge from below, and the music swells in intensity." -- Adam Strohm, fakejazz.com.
CD $12
JACK WRIGHT With DAN BREEN/ANDREW HAYLECK/NEIL FEATHER/JASON WILLETT et al - Open Wide: High Zero Festival 2001 (Recorded 009; USA) This colossal undertaking was recorded live at the annual High Zero Festival in Baltimore, just four after the 9/11 disaster. It features an international cast of improvisers (known and not) including the enigmatic Jack Wright on saxes & piano, Keenan Lawler on national steel guitar, Katt Hernandez on violin, John Dierker on bass clarinet, Chris Meeder on tuba, Evan Rapport on soprano sax, Dan Breen on drums, Thomas Ankersmit on alto sax, Andrew Hayleck on guitar and Jason Willett & Neil Feather on assorted odd & invented instruments. Marvelously chaotic, sometimes jarring and rock-inflected series of improvisations with various combinations of Jack Wright (reeds, piano), Dan Breen (drums), John Dierker (reeds), Neil feather (inventions), Andrew Hayleck (inventions, electronics), Katt Hernandez (violin), Keenan Lawler (steel guitar), Christopher Meeder (tuba), Evan Rapport (reeds), Jason Willett (electronics), and others.
CD $12
KATT HERNANDEZ With JACK WRIGHT/DAN BREEN/ANDREW HAYLECK et al - The Long Awaited Etcetera..: High Zero Festival 2001 (Recorded 008; USA) A beautiful record in the High Zero Festival documentation series, featuring Bostonian violinist Katt Hernandez and a host of other improvisors. Hernandez is an exceptionally lyrical and generative microtonal fiddle player with a deep appreciation for middle-eastern music and various folk traditions. She's joined on this disk by various combinations of Dan Breen (clavinet), Charles Cohen (synth), John Dierker (reeds), Helena Espvall-Santoleri (cello), David Gross (reeds), Andrew Hayleck (invented instruments), Catherine Pancake (percussion), Evan Rapport (wind instruments, piano), and Jack Wright (reeds).
CD $12
JOE McPHEE With JACK WRIGHT/JERRY LIM/SEAN MEEHAN et al - Mr. Peabody Goes to Baltimore: At The High Zero Festival 2000 (Recorded 005; USA) Multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee (reeds, pocket trumpet, PVC pipe) is one of the great treasures of American improvised music and an player of both stellar range and inspiration. His "PO" music is a highly personal synthesis of jazz, free improvsation, pure sound research, and a subtle and provocative sense of humor. Working since the sixties from his base in his native town of Poughkeepsie, NY, McPhee has collaborated intensely across North America and Europe on a huge range of projects. His music was the initial inspiration for the founding of HAT HUT records and he currently collaborates intensely with the likes of Hammid Drake, Peter Brotzman, Pauline Oliveros, and Joe Giardullo.
On "Mr. Peabody," McPhee is heard at his "OUT" best, catalyzed to higher states of fluid musical strangeness by the likes of monstrously good experimental saxophonist Jack Wright, James Coleman (Theremin), Michael Johnsen (self-built electronics, musical saw, soprano sax), Jerry Lim (electric guitar), Sean Meehan (percussion), and Ian Nagoski (soundfields). This is easily one of the strangest and most rewarding disks of free improvisation from 2001, and stands up to repeated listenings.
CD $12
CAROL GENETTI With JON ROSE/JACK WRIGHT et al - The Shattering: High Zero Festival 2000 (Recorded 004; USA) The wild experimental vocalist from Chicago plumbs the depths of seductive and sometimes earsplitting free improvisation with an international range of improvisors Magali Babbin (transducers), John Berndt (reeds, self-built instruments, electronics), John Dierker (bass clarinet), Paul Hoskins (reeds), Jerry Lim (electric Guitar), Catherine Pancake (percussion), Julie Pomerleau (violin), Jon Rose (violin), Jason Willett (electronics) and Jack Wright (reeds).
Genetti ranks with the most accomplished avant-garde vocalists of all time, using the voice in ways which are completely new to music. More than just a great solo album, this record is a great introduction to a cross section of some of the most uncompromising and inspired improvisors that have emerged in recent years.
CD $12
THAT NOTHING IS KNOWN [BOB MARSH/MICHAEL ZERANG/JACK WRIGHT/JOHN BERNDT] - Quartet Improvisations (Recorded 002; USA) A crucial record of contemporary free improvisation, with Michael Zerang, Jack Wright, Bob Marsh and John Berndt. Beautifully recorded from a live radio concert, the first meeting of this quartet--very intense and deeply enigmatic, this CD got great reviews when it was released. "Self-generating logics within an eerie environment of mutable sounds and virtuoso extended techniques, like the world-mirage peeling away to reveal the hollow earth beneath."
"...during the final sections, the quartet's performances evolve into something truly special. Berndt and Marsh are at their most flamboyant and attentive during section six. The final fifty minutes illuminate the limitless expressive scope of the acoustic-amplified music interface." - David Lewis, Cadence
CD $12
HENRY FLYNT - New American Ethnic Music Vol 4: Ascent to the Sun (Recorded 021; USA) "The final release in the New American Ethnic Music series (but not the last Henry Flynt on Recorded) is Ascent to the Sun, a brilliant, sparkling hillbilly raga in the family of You Are My Everlovin' but with a unique double violin approach and a mind-bending structure all its own. The piece covers incredible ground in terms of specificity of mood and sentiment, and is deeply listenable and experimental at once. It is a new creation by Flynt circa 2004, engineered by Tim Barnes."
CD $12
HENRY FLYNT - New American Ethnic Music Vol 3: Hillbilly Tape Music (Recorded 007; USA) Third volume in the New Americam Ethnic Music series, following: You Are My Everlovin' & Spindizzy. Featuring recordings from 1971 through 1978, this focuses on shorter tracks that explore the third-ear mania of looped violin playing as well as could be imagined. Breathtaking stuff and essential for all followers of the Tony Conrad/post-minimalism timeline. "This is an amazing document of the nihilist father of concept art and inventor of electronic Hillbilly music. The record shows more than ever Flynt's musical genius, the audacity of his compositions (which seek to exalt rural southern music to a level beyond this civilization) and the strange qualitative fluidity of his playing."
CD $12
HENRY FLYNT - New American Ethnic Music Vol 2: Spindizzy (Recorded 006; USA) "This record also has a much clearer hillbilly/bluegrass quality than his previous releases, including some fiddle solos that can be mistaken for field recordings of inspired musicians from the heyday of traditional bluegrass music. At the same time, the record is also full of surprises and some very strange compositional ideas, all tightly unified within Flynt's ineffable singular vision."
CD $12
HENRY FLYNT - New American Ethnic Music Vol 1: You Are My Everlovin'/Celestial Power [2 CD set] (Recorded 003; USA) 2007 repress, originally released in 2001. The classic double CD release that really renewed the interest in Henry's Flynt's idiosyncratic music (linked to Conceptual art and minimalism) - at least 10 other CDs have followed since the release of this one. It is listed as #6 on Alan Lichts' "Minimal Top Ten" list, which says a lot. First volume in the series subtitled: New American Ethnic Music.
First volume in a series subtitled: New American Ethnic Music. "Two 45 minute sets of live improvised 'avant-garde hillbilly and blues music' featuring Henry Flynt on (a rather gained) violin, one (YAME) is a duo with an unaccredited tambura player (drenched in reverb/background acoustics), the other (CP) featuring 1 track of violin, and 2 tracks of volume pedal guitars -- all performed by Flynt (drenched in reverb/background acoustics). Henry Flynt is a vanguard American conceptual artist, key Fluxus participant, ally to both La Monte Young (esp. in the early New York years, contributing to the key Fluxus document; the La Monte-edited An Anthology) and George Maciunas (several mid 60s collaborations including 'Communists Must Give Revolutionary Leadership in Culture'), author of many pamphlets and public propaganda works (Blueprint for a Higher Civilization, Down with Art), magazine articles ('Extracts from Personhood's Self Cancellation', perhaps more relevant 'The Meaning of My Avant-Garde Hillbilly and Blues Music'), recently obsessed with furthering the ideals of Meta-Technology. An interesting set of performances, both extended extemporizations on extended alpha-state ascension through excessive application of overtone-series note relationships/harmonics over a single chord/form. Close in spirit to La Monte perhaps, closer in application to something like Tony Conrad or Arnold Dreyblatt, only with a unique country-fried holler-bent that's at once alienating to art-music lovers but at the same time much more personable. An important cultural and historic link, one of the only fully realized Fluxus audio documents (despite it's 10+ year delay to the 'classic' era) available in the CD age. Seminal" -- Hrvatski

"I love composing improvised music and improvising composed music - improvising is something you can't improvise - the main thing is to evaluate the urgency of saying something as it is being said - the only difference between composition and improvisation is the sense of time. Sometimes I like to put more metaphysics in music, sometimes more music in metaphysics. Each tune "as the crow flies"

"Mr. Hanrahan often gets something deeper and more structural on Desire. Instead of writing a tune and lyrics, then deciding on a beat, he has taken a lesson from his Haitian and Cuban colleagues and learned to work his way up from the rhythm. Not just any rhythm, either: he's after a fusion of Haitian, Cuban, Brazilian, salsa, rock and jazz syncopations that will register as none of the above... Interwoven throughout Desire are sequels to the tales of sexual conflict Mr. Hanrahan started on Coup de Tete along with border crossings, bilingual puns, a Yoruba legend, smoky bossa-nova romanticism and reflections on the making (and the financing) of the album itself - all subjects that can be connected somehow, in the crossfire of distinct but interlocking rhythms... Mr. Hanrahan's ambition seems to have infected everyone in his pool of musicians. The all play as if they've found a brand new community - one where a dance party has just begun." - Jon Pareles, New York Times
"Desire Develops an Edge is well-named; it is a seductive work, but one in which you the musicians actually willing themselves to avoid the traps of habit... Bruce is a revelation. Phrasing each song as if it were an interior monologue, shedding his arena-filling roar for a completely personal sound. Bruce emerges as a remarkable gifted singer... Desire is the first Great Record of 1984." - David Bither, New York Beat
"One of the 60 jazz records of the 20th Century for people who think they hate jazz... These albums changed me..." - Actual (France)
