FRED VAN HOVE/PAUL DUNMALL/PAUL ROGERS/PAUL LYTTON - Asynchronous (Slam 283; UK) Featuring Fred Van Hove on piano, Paul Dunmall on tenor sax, Paul Rogers on bass and Paul Lytton on drums. This was recorded live at the Europa Jazz Festival in Le Mans, France in May of 2008 and it is quite a stellar quartet! There is a short excerpt from this performance in the Paul Dunmall documentary DVD on FMR and it left us wanting more. This was a first time meeting on stage of this particular quartet and it was an astonishing concert. When four master improvisers meet, you can hear them exploring, thinking, reacting and interacting together. Superbly recorded by Jean Marc Fousatt who has worked so well Joelle Leandre in the past. Paul Rogers' custom made 7-string bass is well captured and sounds especially amazing here. This disc contains two long pieces and it is a little over an hour. The title piece is nearly 47 minutes long and evolves organically, from calm to turbulent sections. There is a part where Van Hove is playing angelic harp-like waves on the piano while the rest of the quartet softly levitate around him. Transcendent. Longtime holder of the drum seat in the London Jazz Composers Orchestra, Paul Lytton adds his own quirky rustling percussion sound to this quartet. Everyone gets a chance to stretch out and shine here. From solos into duos into trios and into the quartet, I was at the edge of my seat for the entire disc. Absolutely stunning! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

GREG MORGAN With CHRIS AMBLER/DAN HAYWOOD/JEFF BARNES/PETE FRENCH - Domino (Slam 281; UK) This music draws on an ancient tradition: it owes as much to Aeschylus as it does to late-John Coltrane and Albert Ayler. The expressionism of the music - fragmented rhythms, atonality, deeply-felt melodic beauty - is there to intensify the unity of the drama. The pieces are like disconnected scenes: dialogue, recitative, chorus, aria. And the story is perhaps Mazeppa.
"Greg Morgan on tenor & soprano saxes, with Dan Haywood on guitar, Pete French on organ and Jeff Barnes & Chas Ambler on drums. I can't say that I was familiar with any of the members of quintet before hearing this disc, but the Slam label is renown for introducing us the dozen of fine musicians from the UK, as well as Italy, Argentina & Cuba. Saxist Greg Morgan wrote all of the songs on this disc. Although there are two drummers, they only play together on two pieces. The group has a more earthy, jazz/rock sort of sound. When Greg switches to soprano sax on "Frogs for Snakes" he sounds like he playing bagpipes or something equally spiritual or ritualistic with swirling percussion and guitar underneath. There is a somber, eerie duo for tenor sax and organ which is nice change of pace from some of the more intense discs I've reviewed today. Mr. Morgan switches to piano for parts of two pieces and plays elegantly on "Morning Land". This disc seems more like a solo offering at times since only the sax is featured on most of these pieces. The good thing is that Greg Morgan does have a strong tone on both saxes and shines throughout." - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
CD $16

STEFANO PASTOR With GEORGE HASLAM/CLAUDIO LUGO/GIORGIO DINI - Freedom (Slam 520/Silita 1001; UK) Featuring Stefano Pastor on violin, George Haslam on bari sax & taragato, Claudio Lugo on soprano sax and Giorgio Dini on double bass. Virtuoso violinist Stefano Pastor has worked Harry Beckett & Borah Bergman, as well as having an ongoing collaboration with Slam's reeds wiz George Haslam. I can't say that I was familiar with the other two members of this fine quartet. Mr. Pastor played here at DMG last year & will hopefully be here again this summer, so don't miss an opportunity to hear him live.
'Freedom' features an interesting instrumental line-up with two reeds (bari & soprano saxes) and two strings (violin & double bass), both from opposite ends of the sound spectrum. This is not just another "free improv" session, since there are some sketches or charts involved from what I can hear. Bassist Giorgio Dini does a great job of holding down the rhythm section role by pumping lines, occasionally at a furious pace. There is a constant layer of lines that intersect and interact, shift and move together like currents in the ocean. Although there are free elements or sections, someone (George?) seems to have written small figures that brings thing together. This is just an assumption, although there is some amazingly tight interplay here. The magic here is when one of the players begins a line the others harmonize with it instantly creating superb shifting shades and focused ideas. What I find most interesting is when they end up in some sublime, melodic and what sounds like partially charted sections. There is calm center to much of this which makes this set often thoughtful and haunting. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

The Frith disc you've all been asking about is HERE!

FRED FRITH COSA BRAVA With ZEENA PARKINS/CARLA KIHLSTEDT/MATTHIAS BOSSI - Ragged Atlas (Intakt 161; Switzerland) Cosa Brava is a quintet formed in March 2008 in Oakland, California by multi-instrumentalist and composer Fred Frith (Henry Cow, Skeleton Crew, Keep the Dog). Fred Frith's career began as a folk and later rock musician - he co-founded Henry Cow in 1968 - but has since diversified into a number of different genres, from avant-jazz to contemporary classical music. He has written scores for film and dance, and music for orchestras and string quartets. But, like a lot of musicians, the idea of "genre" is not really very interesting to him anyway!
The motivation behind the formation of Cosa Brava arose out of Frith's love of rock music in general and songs in particular. He said, "Over the years I've done a lot of improvising, and composed a lot of music on paper. I've written for orchestras and string quartets, directed ensembles of improvisers of all descriptions, produced scores for dance and film. I even somehow became a Professor of Composition! But I really miss what you can do with a rock band [and his chance to sing some new songs! - ed.]. I miss developing material through the push and pull of cooperative rehearsals, I miss what happens when you move away from 'the parts' and start formulating things with a collective ear, I miss the single-minded commitment to a group identity. The musicians in Cosa Brava can improvise, read scores, AND rock the house. ..Like I say, if you pick the right players, chances are the music will take care of itself."

OM [URS LEIMGRUBER/CHRISTY DORAN/BOBBI BURRI/FREDY STUDER] - OM Willisau (2008) (Intakt 170; Switzerland) Recorded live at Jazzfestival Willisau 2008. The band is cult. Because of their history and because of their playing. They took off eruptively from Lucerne into the world, and from the beginning the four musicians concocted with enormous vitality things that seems to be incompatible: the energy of rock music with the power of free improvisation. OM found a musically sensible common ground for the experiences of a young generation that had been electrified by Jimi Hendrix, fascinated by John Coltrane and inspired by Free Jazz. OM put rock music into spontaneous musical processes with uncertain endings.
OM's coming together not by chance but imperatively. Their band history lasted ten years, from 1972 until 1982, and now they're not simply continuing it after a long pause. It's more like the forces of nature are re-igniting it. With burning devotion to their playing and overwhelming lust for risk, today even more radically than ever. Unconditionally, not accepting anything but gestures of the authentic.

AXEL DORNER With NOBOYOSHI INO/KAZUO IMAI/NORITAKA TANAKA - Rostbestandige Zeit [2 CD set] (Doubt 132/133; Japan) This is the masterpiece of 2CDs, splitting the music into improvisation (momentary composition) and / or composition.
DISC 1 is the improvised music by Axel, Ino, Imai. Guitar sound of Imai is hot and tingling, Ino plays careful his choice pizzicato and arcoexquisitely, and Axel's original sound bring 'out' into their music. Their atmosphere of music is special one, cannot be similar from every music. DISC 2 consists of all Axel's composition. He play several tunes also on "die Enttauschung" (with Rudi Mahall, etc) but every tunes' structure is very vivid. Note drum playing by Nori, who is invited to play by Axel!
If jazz is to the survive in present day.. this work is the real contemporary "jazz" today.

PETER BROTZMANN/PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE - Woodcuts (Smalltown SJ 170; EEC) Follow up album to 2007's Sweet Sweat. Woodcuts is another free jazz mastodont from the two masters: Pete Brotzmann & Paal Nilssen-Love. This is European free-jazz at its best. Recorded live in concert at Kampen in Oslo, Norway.

KEN VANDERMARK & PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE - Chicago Volume (Smalltown SJ 179; EEC) Recorded the 10th & 11th of June 2007 in Milwaukee & Chicago, these two albums show you the true genius of improvisation & the pure art of spontaneous music. Instead of making a double album, two separate albums with Vandermark's beautiful photos from the cities the albums were recorded in are presented as post-cards from the cities. A beautiful, epic, warm & groovy free jazz soundtrack to Chicago & Milwaukee.

Instead of making a double album, two separate albums with Vandermark's beautiful photos from the cities the albums were recorded in are presented as post-cards from the cities. THE ENGINES [JEB BISHOP/DAVE REMPIS/NATE McBRIDE/TIM DAISY] - Wire And Brass (Okka Disk 12079; USA) "Chicago's best known and busiest improvising musicians: trombonist Jeb Bishop, saxophonist Dave Rempis, bassist Nate McBride and drummer Tim Daisy. Recorded live in April, 2008 at the Hungry Brain in Chicago."
CD $15

MATTHEW SHIPP/SABIR MATEEN - Sama (Not Two 817; EEC) Featuring Matt Shipp on piano and multi-reed man Sabir Mateen on clarinet only. This superb duet was recorded at Roulette with no one present but the two musicians, Steve Dalachinsky, his wife Yuko Otomo and the recording engineer. Local poet & scenester, Steve wrote the excellent liner notes and Yuko designed the spare cover. Both have done a fine job and both Steve & Yuko are longtime friends of Matt & Sabir, hence this is a family affair - everything fits just right. Sabir Mateen is a multi-instrumental reeds player (saxes, flutes & clarinets), but here concentrates on just clarinet. This is fine since he and Matt have been collaborating for many years and have established a strong rapport. The exchange of ideas and interaction flows seamlessly and is consistently spirited. I hadn't noticed it until now but the clarinet and piano have a similar range of expression and sound perfect together. Although this is spontaneously improvised, it often sounds like the two musicians have planned or directed their ideas in advance. I love the way that this duo follow one another through stormy and more melodic, calm sections, constantly combining forces into a most focused singular sound. There are a few moments when they push each other to the edge of freedom but never lose sight of their internal sympathetic glue. This is without doubt one of the most natural sounding duets I've heard! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
CD $18

THOMAS FUJIWARA/TAYLOR HO BYNUM - Stepwise (Not Two 828; EEC) First time duo recording for Tomas Fujiwara on drums & Taylor Ho Bynum on cornet, although they also play together in Thirteenth Assembly & other projects. Liner notes were written by trumpet wiz Nate Wooley and they are honest, illuminating and at times funny. The music is superb, consistently creative and filled with unexpected delights. This duo dip into the jazz historical flow and swim upstream with and against the currents. Taylor often sounds like he has so many idea that he has to get out in a short amount of space, that an excitable rush only adds to the cosmic flow. Tomas is the perfect foil and dependable navigator. There is a most natural vibe here as if both musicians are sailing together as one force. From ultra-subtle to explosive, from ancient to modern, covering all of the bases and taking it to a place beyond categories. Pure communication. That's it! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
CD $18

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - Viajando Hacia Adelante Y Hacia Atras En El Tiempo Con El Loco Doctor Chad: 30 Years Of Rarities [2 CD set] (Diogenes; Mexico) Loosely translated: 'Travelling forward and backward in time with the crazy Doctor Chad'. This incredible collection of Eugene Chadbourne rarities compiles 35 tracks over 30 years time and was put together by Andres Argil, an experimental guitarist from Mexico. What amazes me about this is that listening to this sprawling collection, I can see that Dr. Chad has had a vision, a crazed spirit of creativity which both embraces and pokes fun at any and all traditions in music from jazz to free to rock to country to psych to folk & blues & noise. The booklet includes liner notes by Dr. Chadbourne in English & Spanish explaining where & when each piece was recorded. Guest include John Zorn, Shockabilly, Violent femmes, red Clay Ramblers, Camper van Beethoven, Sun City Girls, ZU, Paul Lovens, Han Bennink, NoahJohn, Leonid Soybelman, Pat Thomas, Alex Ward, Jimmy Carl Black, David Moss, Jon Rose, Andrea Centazzo plus numerous solo guitar rarities unearthed for the first time. From the brilliant to the bizarre, this is indeed an overwhelming compilation of eccentricities from one of the distinctive guitarists to emerge from the early Downtown scene. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

HIKASHU [MAKIGAMI KOICHI] - Ten Ten Ten (Makigami 06; Japan) Makigami Koichi (vocals, theremin), Mita Freeman (electric guitar, sampler), Sakaide Masami (bass, effects), and Sato Masaharu (drums, voice). Most recent recording from the ever-evolving Hikashu!

SUN RA - The Road To Destiny: The Lost Reel Collection Vol 6 (Transparency 306; USA) Live At The Gibus, Paris France October 18th 1973. Featuring Sun Ra, June Tyson, John Gilmore, Marshall Tyson, Danny Thompson, Danny Davis, Eloe Omoe, Kwami Hadi, Akh Tal Ebah, etc. This was the first year that I caught Sun Ra Arkestra at the 5 Spot on St. Marks Place and they totally blew my mind. The trumpet section sat at our table midset & played to each of my friends! This disc captures that spaced out spirit quite well. Space is indeed the place. - BLG

SUN RA - Live In Rome: March 28, 1980 [2 CD set] (Transparency 315; USA) Featuring Sun Ra, June Tyson, John Gilmore, Marshall Allen, Michael Ray, Danny Thompson & Noel Scott and others. Yet another undiscovered gem from the mysterious Sun Ra satellite of sonic wonders. - BLG
2 CD set for $17

TARO [JOACHIM BADENHORST/MATTHIAS ERIAN/INGRID SCHMOLINER/MARTIN SCHONLIEB] - Flaechten (Taro; EEC) Featuring Joachim Badenhorst on clarinets & tenor sax, Matthias Erian on electronics & sampling, Ingrid Schmoliner on prepared piano & voice and Martin Schonlieb on prepared banjo & guitar. Bass clarinet wizard, Joachim Badenhorst, certainly does get around. Although he now lives in Brooklyn, the former Belgium-based reeds player has worked with Han Bennink, Simon Jermyn, Ryan Blotnick, plus a fine duo called Os Meus Shorts and a superb trio with Sessel Vera Pettersen & Mikkel Ploug (CD on Songlines). Joachim played here at DMG for the second time recently & left of with yet another weird gem...
I am not familiar with any of the other three members of this Austrian quartet, but I was intrigued anyway as anything I've heard from Joachim has been special. Plus the instrumentation of electronics, prepared piano & prepared banjo is indeed an odd combination. This disc is often stark and carefully sparse. This sounds like a series of duos or trios with Joachim & one of the other members of the quartet. The duos often have a warm and intimate vibe, like a soft spoken conversation. On one track it sounds as if there are two bass clarinets criss-crossing, perhaps one is sampled. There is a haunting, quietly serious vibe about this disc which makes it a fascinating yet austere listening experience. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

CARAVAN [PYE HASTINGS/RICHARD SINCLAIR/DAVE SINCLAIR/RICHARD COUGHLAN/STEVE MILLER et al] - The World Is Yours: An Anthology 1968-1976 [4 CD set + Book] (Deram/Decca 532459; UK) 2010 four CD set. The World Is Ours is an exhaustive, digitally remastered box set from one of the true originators of the Canterbury sound between 1968 and 1976. This set includes (along with cuts from their classic albums) previously unreleased studio recordings, rare single mixes, BBC recordings and outtakes! Also includes a lavish book featuring an essay and previously unseen photographs.
4 CD + Book set for $60

MAX EASTLEY - Installation Recordings (1973 - 2008) [2 CD set] (Paradigm 26; UK) "This 2CD is essentially a retrospective of Eastley's installation work. As such, it updates and adds many new examples to the 1975 release New and Rediscovered Musical Instruments, which was released as a split LP with David Toop on Brian Eno's Obscure Records. This is Eastley's first solo CD. Of the 35 tracks, only the last two have any guests (the most virtuosic moment being George Lewis playing a grass blade). All the other pieces are either powered by the natural forces of wind and water, or else are motor driven gallery installations. The ethereal sounds of the aoelian harps, the haunting aeolian flutes, and the violent tension of his aerophone installations are hallmark Eastley sounds. These sounds, and many others, sit amidst a wide range of acoustic settings, from windy hill tops to quiet brooks, residential street scenes to coastal shores. The indoor recordings are no less varied, ranging across a rich variety of acoustics and gallery spaces from tiny micro sounds to large scale amplification. Wood, metal and stone are brought to life with electricity. Although there are many photos in the 20-page booklet, much is left to the imagination to work out how the sounds are made. With this limited access to the visual, the focus is pulled towards the musicality of the sounds themselves. This musicality is reinforced by the slow cross fades of most of the pieces from indoors to outdoors to form a series of suites. The recordings mostly date from the mid '70s, but there are pieces from later decades. Nearly everything was recorded either to Revox or Uher and occasionally cassette, using what microphones were available at the time. Recent recordings are digital. The varying quality of the recording set-ups across this 2CD adds yet another dimension to the shifting sound fabric of this anthology."

L.A.F.M.S. (LAFMS: LOS ANGELES FREE MUSIC SOCIETY) [V.A.] - I.D. Art #2 (Paradigm 23; UK) "When the Los Angeles Free Music Society 10CD set came out I eagerly flipped through the contents to see what treasures had finally been made available again. Much to my surprise, the early compilation I.D. Art #2 was not included in this otherwise major overview of the LAFMS. I.D. Art #2 was the second LP release on their label, coming after Le Forte Four's Bikini Tennis Shoes LP, and before the 2LP Live at the Brand, a split album between Le 44 and The Doo-Dooettes. It dates from 1976 and is also probably the most difficult LP on their catalog to find. Originally released in an edition of just 200 copies, most of which were given out to the 44 artists and groups who appeared on this extraordinary LP. The deal was that each track was paid for by the contributor at a rate of $8 per minute in exchange for 4 copies of the disc. Consequently very few copies were ever made available via the LAFMS mail order service. With a running time of 66 minutes and the sheer variety of contributions, I.D. Art #2 remained for most people a mysterious and tantalizing item. Most of the contributors came from the students at Otis Art Institute in L.A., and many make their only recordings ever for this disc. Among the known names from the LAFMS scene are: Le Forte Four, Joe Potts, Fredrick Nilsen, Mr Foon, Ace & Duce, Dennis Mehaffey as well as 6 tracks by Smegma. Other artists include the painter Miles Forst, violinist Josie Roth, film makers Doug Henry and Gary Beydler, mail artist and dog portrait painter Irene Dogmatic, Otis librarian Joan Hugo, graphic designer Kathe Schreyer and many other creative artists and designers at the start of their careers who submitted their audio idea, be it via telephone, in subways, recontextualizing old vinyl, philosophizing, story telling, being abstract, joking, rehearsing and even playing instruments. This exhilarating journey, bursting with ideas, was compiled by Joe Potts and Waynna Kato."

A SPIRALE [MARIZIO ARGENZIANO/MARIO GABOLA/MASSIMO SPEZZAFERO] - Agaspastik (Fratto 09/Deserted Factory 51 ; Italy) Maurizio Argenziano on electric guitar & feedback, Mario Gabola on acoustic sax & feedback and Massimo Spezzaferro on drums. There seems to an abundance of creative and experimental music coming out of Italy over the past few years with bands like ZU & Deus Ex Machina and labels like NuBop, Rai Trade, El Gallo Rojo, Auand, Longsong and Amirani. We just received a short stack of promos from yet another fine Italian label called Fratto and again I am amazed by even more unknown gems.
A Spirale is a formidable power trio and often over-the-top. "Black Crack" blasts opens with a dense wall of feedback before the trio erupts into a tight, noise/rock powerhouse. There are some occasional moments of free calm before the sax and guitar strangle each other in a wrestling match free focused noise. I dig that this band has that true punk in-your-face spirit yet remain focused and impressively tight. Guitarist Maurizio uses his axe more as a bludgeon instrument but comes up with an array of twisted sounds. The feedback employed by either the saxist or guitarist, is also well-used and never overdone or excessive. Just when you thought you had these dudes pegged as ear-shredding noise enthusiasts, the break it down to tension filled, spacious, haunting noise lullaby for "Suriciorbu". What's interesting here is the way this trio uses bent sax & electric guitar notes & feedback and turn them into what sounds like charted or directed pieces. Althoughs parts of this were a bit extreme, I found that there was a most impressive inner restraint and structure that is not so apparent unless you are patience and have the time to look more closely. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

BARRY CLEVELAND - Hologramatron (Moonjune 033; USA) Barry Cleveland electric & acoustic guitar, electric & acoustic 12-string guitar, Moog Guitar, GuitarViol, sampled percussion, sampled Mellotron, voice (8), bass (8); Robert Powell pedal-steel guitar (1-5, 7, 9, 11-13), lap-steel guitar (4); Michael Manring bass (1-9, 11-13); Celso Alberti drums, percussion (1-4, 6-9, 11-13); Amy X Neuburg vocals (1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 13). With Harry Manx vocals (4); Deborah Holland vocals (4); Artist General voice (5); Erdem Helvacioglu acoustic-electric guitar, electronics (3, 13); Rick Walker chain-link drums, teapot (5), congas (4), dumbec (7); Gino Robair dumbec, kendang (6); Forrest Fang mixing, processing, violin (11); Evan Schiller mixing, processing (13). Cleveland is all about sound - from his guitar playing to his compositions to his production - and it's the deeply layered, highly nuanced, cutting-edge sonics that unify his wildly diverse material. Cleveland's earlier work was more ambient and impressionistic (Mythos, released on Larry Fast's Audion label, received rave reviews in Option, Jazziz, and Stereo Review) and his last recording explored instrumental world fusion (Volcano garnered accolades in All About Jazz, Abstract Logix, Innerviews, and Progression) - but Hologramatron pushes multiple musical envelopes simultaneously. In addition to playing acoustic and electric 6- and 12-string guitars on Hologramatron, Cleveland utilized a prototype of the revolutionary Moog Guitar and both acoustic and electric GuitarViols - hybrid bowed instruments tuned like a guitar - along with myriad effects processors and alternative playing devices such as a Chinese erhu bow, Masley Bowhammers, and the Ebow.

JOHN BUTCHER - Invisible Ear (Weight Of Wax 03; UK) A solo tour-de-force featuring John Butcher on close-miked soprano sax, amplified/feedback tenor sax, amplified/feedback soprano sax, multi-tracked saxes and Korg synthesizer. This is a reissue of the limited edition Fringes release from 2003. Each of these 12 pieces is unique, strange and not so easy to describe. "Swan Style" is a close-miked soprano sax, but often sounds like a couple of radiators whistling together and being twisted into odd shapes. The bent notes move slowly between my speakers, crossing paths and mutating into other odd sounds. It often sounds as if these sounds are being placed under a microscope for closer inspection. I can picture someone sowing the sound like a tailor does to a fine piece of clothing. "What Remains" is for five tenor & three soprano multi-tracks and it is quite orchestral with various layers being weaved meticulously, similar to a scary church organ recital. Each pieces involves a variety of textures and manipulations and each one is fascinating in its own way. I got the feeling that the room that I was in was being altered while I listened closely to this incredible solo effort. Without a doubt, a masterpiece! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

KEVIN DRUMM - Kevin Drumm (Perdition Plastics 07.2; USA) This is the first reissue of Kevin Drumm's self-titled premiere solo recording since its original appearance in 1996. Perdition Plastics is honored to make Drumm's foundational work available again in a limited edition of 500 copies. Kevin Drumm is an established and respected composer and improvisational player. He emerged as a notable presence in the thriving Chicago avant-garde music scene of the '90s. This release introduced Drumm with seven tracks of improvised, advanced tabletop guitar. Recorded directly to Digital Audio Tape without edits or overdubs, Drumm evokes a powerful new perspective in guitar sound and method. By contrasting sparseness and complexity, Drumm links improvised new music with electronic composition. This sedate, monochromatic package helped further obscure listener expectations."
CD $14

KEVIN DRUMM - Second (Perdition Plastics 10.2; USA) "This is the first reissue of Kevin Drumm's Second since its original appearance and out-of-print status in 1999. In a limited edition of 500 copies, Perdition Plastics is delighted to make this work available once again. Drumm is well-known and respected as a composer and improvisational player. Second is indeed Drumm's second solo release and is comprised of three compositions. By appearing, disappearing, and reappearing, subtle and dissonant sounds characterize an internal dialogue within an almost filmic scenario. Foreshadowing his later, dark, ambient drone work, Second utilizes a variety of sources including: guitar, organ, accordion, and analogue synth finalized to computer to create this unique document within his extensive output. Compositionally precise and intricate, minute details emerge and illustrate the scope of Drumm's range."
CD $14

ILLUSION OF SAFETY - Probe (Perdition Plastics 12; USA) "This is the first reissue of Illusion of Safety's Probe since its only appearance in 1992. In a limited edition of 500 copies, Perdition Plastics is proud to reintroduce this notable work of contemporary composition. Veteran provocateurs Illusion of Safety examine an audio landscape found between youth and innocence, manufactured entertainment, and suburban complacency. Using a pastiche of field recordings and suggestively composed elements, Dan Burke and Jim O'Rourke strikingly capture ambivalence and their own personal interactions within this environment. Probe was one of several early, pinnacle works to foreshadow the unique and prolific audio fingerprint of renowned producer/player Jim O'Rourke, when still a compositional student in Chicago. This release fits neatly into O'Rourke's issuing of forgotten and initial recordings. As the constant center of Illusion of Safety since 1983, Dan Burke has consistently edited and evolved more than 20 CDs from ambience to electronica, from sound collage to post-industrial noise. The complexity and restraint found within Probe marked a compelling new direction for Burke and a great many others influenced by his music. Illusion of Safety has been released by such labels as Die Stadt, Experimedia, Silent, Soleilmoon, Staalplaat, Tesco, and Waystyx, among others. Collaborations include Cheer-Accident, Thomas Demuzio, Kevin Drumm, Ben Vida, and others. Probe will be of interest to those who enjoy Hafler Trio, Throbbing Gristle, Luc Ferrari, etc."

RLW - Points Of Reference (Perdition Plastics 11; USA) 2002 release. "Ralf Wehowsky (Germany) Is one of the most respected electronic composers of our day. Utilizing sound as a psychological platform, the music of RLW causes the listener to (re)evaluate what one hears and why. Points Of Reference is a rare accomplishment, an intricate pastiche of natural and electronic forms appearing, blending, fading and regenerating within six thematic narratives. Wehowsky has been involved in the creation of critically important music for decades, notably with his involvement in the seminal group P16D4 and his partnership in the Selektion label. Points Of Reference is adorned by beautiful cover art photography from Dan Burke (Illusion Of Safety), with all processing being completed within the camera. Bruce Russell (Dead C/Corpus Hermeticum) contributes liner notes that amplify the vast levels of meaning and varied connections between all points of reference..."

USHIO TORIKAI - Go Where? (JVC/Zen 5152; Japan) Ushio Torikai is a Japanese composer of contemporary classical music. In the early 1980s, Ms. Torikai spent a great deal of effort to introduce Shomyo (Japanese Buddhist monks' chants), and ancient Japanese music and instruments, to the Japanese contemporary music scene and audience. For example, she is responsible for the reconstruction and reintroduction of the Kugo, an ancient Asian angular harp whose origins can be traced back more than three millennia and had been unused for over 1200 years. Her compositions vary considerably in instrumentation, ranging from Western orchestral instruments to traditional Japanese ones; computer/electronics to reconstructed ancient Asian instruments; and Western Choir to Japanese Buddhist monks' chants.
The computer-music compositions on Go Where? were realized at IRCAM in Paris in 1985, with analysis and synthesis by David Wessel. "Shamama" starts off this disc with the juxtaposition of shamisen and electronic sounds. The shamisen is a Japanese string instrument with a long history. The electronics, on the other hand, have not aged well since the '80s. There is a clear interaction, a co-existence between the two timbral sides of this composition as the electronics do seem shaped by the tone and improvisatory sound of the shamisen. Which is part of the imbalance of this piece. The shamisen part could stand on its own without the electronic accompaniment (it hardly sounds responsive to the swirl of digital tones surrounding it). I love the crisp, percussive attack of the shamisen timbre. It's difficult to feel much affection for the other side as the electronic sounds would be rendered hopelessly hollow if isolated from the animating force of the shamisen sound.
"Junk" opens with an amplified breath that turns to slowly whispered and processed speech played against an amplified creaking noise. The whispered part is eventually subsumed by the creaks in the foreground as a stringed instrument enters the sonic frame. This composition then concludes with a crashing thud that finally puts an end to sound of this heavy hammock swinging in the ear. The processing of the whispered material is well done. The delivery is aggressive and slow with plenty of panning effects. Having it obscured by the creaks seems to add to its mystery.
"Sei" consists of overdubbed vocal parts that form a chant composed of sustained tones with brief bursts of heavy vibrato framed appearing in individual lines at fairly regular intervals. The layering of this many voices creates a large, hypnotic droning sound. The difference tones that appear like mirages are fascinating. I would love to hear this idea developed over a span of hours at a time. At seven and a half minutes it seems like an introduction filled with promise.
"Go Where?" opens with the ringing tones of temple bells. The long decay is allowed to layer with several different pitched bells that beat against each other as they fade away. This decay sound is then captured and isolated electronically as the harmonic qualities of these tones are then presented as a focal point. This sonic environment then expands and exposes incredible depths hidden within the timbre of ringing bells rich with jarring dissonance and sublime consonance.
"Miyori" begins with a series of gestures played on the koto that build outward both harmonically and melodically. As the koto part settles toward a linear, "walking" line a wordless vocal part consisting of long sustained tones is added. This composition then concludes with a brief, improvisatory break-up of the koto line.

CHRIS BROWN & PAULINE OLIVEROS - Music In The Air (Deep Listening 43; USA) Chris Brown, piano and electronics; Pauline Oliveros, accordion and Expanded Instrument System (EIS). "Long time friends and colleagues, this is the first ever duo release by Pauline Oliveros and Chris Brown. Music in the Air features Brown on piano and live computer signal processing and Oliveros on accordion, conch, percussion and Expanded Instrument System. The three pieces on the CD were recorded live in the studio with no overdubbing. Pauline Oliveros' life as a composer, performer and humanitarian is about opening her own and others' sensibilities to the many facets of sound. Since the 1960s she has influenced American music profoundly through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. She is widely known for her accordion playing with electronics using her Expanded Instrument System (EIS). She also founded Deep Listening Institute, Ltd. in 1985 to encourage others in the practice of Deep Listening for creativity and heightened awareness of sound and sounding. Many credit her with being the founder of present day meditative music. All of Oliveros' work emphasizes musicianship, attention strategies, and improvisational skills. Columbia University honored Pauline Oliveros as the first woman composer to receive the distinguished William Schuman Award, which included a retrospective concert in March 2010. Chris Brown's music has evolved within the intersections of many different traditions and styles. Following early training as a classical pianist, he was influenced by studies of Indonesian, Indian, Afro-American, and Cuban musics, and then took off on branches provided by the American Experimentalists in inventing and building a personal electronic instrumentation. At first these were amplified acoustic devices; then he went on to build analog circuits that modified their sounds, and custom-made computer systems that interactively transformed them. More recently, he has extended this fascination with instrument building to the design of computer network systems that interact with acoustic musicians and with other computers and musicians connected over the internet."

STEVEN STUCKY//EVELYN GLENNIE/LAN SHUI & SINGAPORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - Pinturas De Tamayo: Orchestral Works (BIS 1622; EEC) Performed by Evelyn Glennie, percussion; Singapore Symphony Orchestra/Lan Shui. "Pinturas de Tamayo is the result of American composer Steven Stucky's encounter with the art of the Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo. Initially struck by the painting The Great Galaxy -- reproduced on the cover of this CD -- he chose this and four other paintings as his points of departure for a five-movement suite, which although it is far from pictorial certainly offers as much color and poetry as the paintings themselves. In Spirit Voices for percussion and orchestra, Stucky has instead explored mythical beings from around the world, including Coyote, the trickster god of the Navajo Indians, mountain goblins of Japanese folk culture, and the Scottish bean nighe, a female wraith portending death. Written for the performers on this disc, the score consists of seven movements in which the percussionist sometimes plays a soloistic role, and in others is integrated into the orchestra. Closing the disc is Stucky's Second Concerto for Orchestra for which he received the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Music. It was written for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its music director Esa-Pekka Salonen, a team that Stucky worked closely with over a long period of time. While the Concerto is not based on any extra-musical images, it is very much a result of this collaboration, which Stucky signals both with musical references and in the title of the first movement: 'Overture (with Friends)'. The present recording is the first of all of these works, and was made in the presence of the composer."

Chuck Bettis's Dusty Gems

Being in a record store all day gives you certain perks, such as listening to a ton of music all day. There are some CD's, which I am surprised are still sitting on the shelves. Many who have graced the new digs with their presence have heard me jamming these CD's in the store. I'm calling my new section of the newsletter Dusty Gems
(aka non-current that I think more people need to know about):

DION McGREGOR - Dion McGregor Dreams Again (Tzadik 7404) - $14 CD *perhaps the greatest story teller i have ever heard

KECAK GANDA SARI - Kecak: A Balinese Music Dr (Bridge 9019) - $15 CD *complete monkey chant!

OLAibi - Humming Moon Drip - Felicity - CD - $30 - Japan - *drummer from OOIOO with tons of Yoshimi vocals on this...a must for all Boredoms fans!

Quantities on some of these items are very limited, so if my two cents lights a fire under you, I would suggest to move on instinct. - Chuck Bettis/DMG

SPIDER TRIO [WALLY SHOUP/JEFFERY TAYLOR/DAVE ABRAMSON] - Live @ Rendezvous 8/12/06 (Assophon 02; USA) The Spider Trio features Wally Shoup on alto sax, Jeffery Taylor on guitar and Dave Abramson on drums. Seattle-based sax legend, Wally Shoup, is the real thing, as each and every disc he is one shows. He has recorded with fire demons Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, Paul Flaherty, Chris Corsano & Reuben Radding. He also has a bunch of trios that are based in Seattle, but little known anywhere else. This trio is one such gem of heavy free/improv intensity. Wally sounds great, digging deep and spewing out his powerful alto sax blasts. Yet, he is only one part of this great trio. Both guitarist, Jeffery Taylor (one-half of Climax Golden Twins) and drummer Dave Abramson (who leads the Diminished Men), explore the freer regions and add a perfect balance. As Dave the drummer keeps a constant dialogue with both Jeff and Wally, the guitarist listens closely and reacts right, answering and bending his notes in a similar style to the way the Wally also twists his notes inside out. This is no mere scream fest either, this is more balanced and the trio moves in waves together, occasionally coming down for a soft landing, before launching again for the skies. Pretty impressive considering that I hadn't heard of Jeffery Taylor or Dave Abramson before this. Jeffery occasionally brings to mind Jimi Hendrix in some of his sounds, yet doesn't really play anything like Jimi. I dig that this trio seems to fall between jazz and rock, into the netherworld of free/improv that succeeds without being held down by anyone's usual expectations. - BLG

FACTUMS - A Primitive Future (Assophon 03; USA) 2008. Future indeed! It's 4000 A.D. and humankind's fate from a binge of manifest destiny has finally collapsed on itself. Now we're back to the basics. The jungle is in charge again. Factums have crafted a soundtrack to this dark and mysterious place. A world where the listener is the prey and this record is the hunter. This is exploratory music, a melding of rusted-out Krautrock debris, Dead C carnage and lost-in-time sci-fi rock moves. "Factums have preciously cut some major art-damaged rock moves for the Siltbreeze label. A Primitive Future is intended as a soundtrack to an imaginary movie and it's a totally beguiling and mysterious spin. The sound is dense, claustrophobic, Xeroxed rock, taking the more extended strategies of the weirdest Dead C sides and compacting them into blunt riffs and sunken vox that feel like some of the most primordial, defiantly monochrome psychedelia this side of nowhere. There are a bunch of long tracks, all convincing monosyllabic traverses of the nowhere zone, cut up with shorter tracks that use amp-buzz, keyboard bleeps, pinging strings and percussion to generate minimal, almost Sun Ra-styled, instrumental fantasias but the whole thing is so oblique, so perfectly unto itself, that it's hard to find any truly accurate comparisons outside of suggesting that if you dig the sound of the '90s underground and you like it as distended and alien as all hell, then this is the kind of environment you'll enjoy sinking to the bottom of. A weird-ass one for sure and recommended." --David Keenan

RAFAEL TORAL - Space Elements Vol II (Taiga 10; USA) Space Elements Vol. II is the fourth release in Rafael Toral's ongoing project, the Space Program. Following the first Elements release, this volume features a new set of collaborators: Evan Parker (soprano sax), Manuel Mota (guitar), Afonso Simoes (drums), Stefano Tedesco (vibraphone), Joao Paulo Feliciano (Rhodes piano), and Ruben Costa (digital synthesizer), as well as returning guests Sei Miguel (trumpet), Cesar Burago (percussion), Fala Mariam (trombone), and Rute Praca (cello). Space Elements Vol. II displays a melodic quality that, along with a refined management of silence, marks a new area and consolidates the Space Program's complex network. Its spaciousness is explained in Toral's liner notes: "While finding ways to make decisions on sound emission, it became evident to me that such sounds should have a reason to exist, they should be essential and necessary." Dan Warburton's writing in The Wire about Space fits Space Elements Vol. II perfectly: "The melodic logic that drives certain instruments within Space also recalls birdsong, with dense, convoluted runs of twittering melody ending in single piping notes, as spontaneous as Messiaen's birdsong transcriptions were painstaking and meticulous." Toral's music is a jazz-inspired re-evaluation of live electronics: "Despite working in a sound world that is cosmetically closer to R2D2's vocabulary than Louis Armstrong's or John Coltrane's, Toral has claimed a kinship to jazz because it models instant music making within a disciplined framework." (Bill Meyer, Dusted); "Toral is looking for nothing less than a totally fresh language to work in" (The Wire). Space Elements Vol. II was mastered direct to metal from 24-bit files and pressed on clear 200 gram virgin-vinyl. With design by Helder Luis at NOTYPE, the LP features a collage by Joao Paulo Feliciano. Presented in a limited edition of 500. CD version to be available on Staubgold

More Gems from the Great SoLyd Label Out of Russia:

FIVE SPOT - Poltva Live in Lviv 2007 (SoLyd 0381; Russia) This truly outstanding quintet features Petras Vysniauskas on soprano sax, Yuri Yaremchuk on soprano & alto saxes & clarinets, Roberta Piket on piano, Mark Tokar on double bass and Klaus Kugel on drums. I was excited to hear this disc since hearing soprano saxist Petras Vysniauskas with Slava Ganelin on those Trio Priority discs from a few years back. The other saxist, Yuri Yaremchuk also has a fine trio disc out Not Two with this very same bassist & drummer.
Starting with subtle, spacious beginning and carefully building from there. Both saxists weave around one another in a most magical and sympathetic way. The interplay between the piano, bass and drums is intense and well-crafted. Both saxists take powerful solos, first Petras on soprano and then Yuri on alto. Whoa! I wasn't familiar with pianist Roberta Piket before this, she is also an excellent player and takes a few dynamic solos as well. Drummer Klaus Kugel is perhaps the most well known here as he has worked with Steve Swell, Bruce Eisenbeil & James Finn. Klaus is a master drummer and consistently interacts and pushes each member of this quintet higher and higher. This is one of the most exhilarating and natural quintets I've heard in a long while, another jewel amongst the other fine gems in the SoLyd catalogue. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

POPULAR MECHANICS [SERGEY KURIOKHIN/IGOR BUTMAN] - Insect Culture (SoLyd 108; Russia) Featuring Sergey Kuriokhin on synthesizer & compositions, Igor Butman on saxes plus Igor Verichev & Valery Alachov as tape engineers & sonic manipulators. This session was recorded in 1985 and released on vinyl in 1987. The late Sergey Kuriokhin was one of the extraordinary, original and influential musicians/composers/bandleaders to emerge the Russian underground during the eighties and nineties. From the influence of Dadaism to Futurism to the wide variety of avant-garde streams, his music and vision was vast and enduring. Popular Mechanics was more of a concept than a band since the membership went from four to forty musicians, ever-evolving and experimenting.
'Insect Culture' captures just one version with two musicians (Kuriokhin & Butman) and two sound manipulators (Verichev & Alachov). Listening to this music some 25 years later, it still sounds fresh and fascinating. There no samplers used in the Soviet Union during this time, so all of the sound manipulations was done with tape. Layers of spoken words, eerie synth, powerful sax eruptions and a wide variety of twisted sounds are massed into a great collage, which slowly evolves through different sections. One part includes a fifties-like funky/rockin' sax episode while the next section has a more seventies like funk groove. This long and winding collage is some 45 minutes at length and is always shifting into something unexpected and usually surprising. There is a good deal of humor employed as well, poking fun at the seriousness of certain modern art ideas. Outside a handful of snippets of the spoken Russian language, it would be difficult to tell exactly where this comes from. Like the best any successful avant-garde movement, this disc sounds timeless. There is a bonus track included which is a dance remix of a portion of the previous work. It is ridiculously cool and shows how much tongue-in-cheek there was in Sergey Kuriokhin's schemes. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

GUYVORONSKY/PETROVA - Homeless Songs (SoLyd 288; Russia) Featuring Vyacheslav Guyvoronski on trumpet and Evelyn Petrova on accordion & voice. Both Mr. Guyvoronsky and Ms. Petrova have a handful of discs out previously on the Leo label, this is their second duo effort. I was fortunate to have seen/heard Evelyn Petrova play a solo set up at the Guelph Festival and found her to be both hilarious and immensely charming. Mr. Guyvoronsky wrote all of the songs on this disc but it is the duo who creates their magic together. Many of the songs are based on Russian folk melodies, which are perfect for fun improvisations. Ms. Petrova has that wacky charm that we find so endearing in Iva Bittova. Mr. Guyvoronsky is also a fine trumpeter, their playing is consistently tight and spirited. It is usually the songs themselves and Ms. Petrova's vocals that make this duo so special. Everything about this disc is a pure delight. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

ALEXEI AIGUI and DIETMAR BONNEN - Up from the Skies / Play the Music of Jimi Hendrix (SoLyd 323; Russia) Featuring Alexei Aigui on violin and Dietmar Bonnen on prepared & unprepared piano & vocals. The legendary Jimi Hendrix was mostly known for his astonishing, original and influential guitar playing as well as classic psychedelic songs. His great song writing is rarely mentioned although there were only three albums released during his short life & career, many of his distinctive songs were classics and are rarely covered by instrumental musicians. This fine classical trained Russian acoustic violin & piano duo do a fine job of playing the enduring melodies of the late Jimi Hendrix. What makes this so special is that this duo take these songs and expand upon what it is that makes these songs stand the test of time. Stripped of their psychedelic effects, the rich and often dynamic melodies shine through. Dieter sings a few of these songs in his own calm and charming way, distilling the excitement of "All Along the Watchtower" into a more somber gem. What amazes me is the way they are able to capture that lovely, laid back sixties (mildly psychedelic) vibe by playing these songs in a rich and dreamy way. I get the feeling that many folks would appreciate this superb duo endeavor whether they knew the songs of Jimi Hendrix or not. All of the performances here are strong on their own terms. "Foxy Lady" seems a bit silly but perhaps it shouldn't be taken too seriously since only Jimi could sound convincing of this signature song. With fifteen tracks and at 61 minutes long, this is a most successful and often engaging tribute. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

ANTHONY BRAXTON/MARAL YAKSHIEVA - Improvisations [Duo] 2008 [2 CD set] (United/SoLyd 383/4; Russia) This double disc set was recorded in July of 2008 at Wesleyan University. The first disc is appropriately called "Improvisations 1" and the duo wind their way into a long journey-like set of stories. At first Mr. Braxton is playing a sopranino sax sublimely while Ms. Yakshieva plays elegant, dream-like piano. Braxton then switches to alto while Maral plays an exquisite solo passage. Mr. Braxton seems more reflective than usual, his tone, the warmest and most enchanting in recent memory. The tempo and the tension increases as the duo take off with more flurries of notes, intertwining marvelously in tight spirals. This entire disc has a most relaxed vibe as if both of the musicians have been playing together for many years and feel completely comfortable. About halfway through the first disc, Braxton plays this cool melody which Ms. Yakshieva picks up on and the duo weave their ideas around that melody for a bit anticipating each other's lines. Each of these two discs is over 50 minutes long and each disc is filled with some magnificent, magical improvising. Yet another treasure from the vast Braxton catalogue of wonders. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

INFINITY - Collected Works 1969-70 (Acme Gramophone 1013; EEC) "Legendary UK psych outfit Infinity formed in 1969 from the ashes of 'Chocolate Soup' psych faves the Flies and Cymbaline. The mission: to develop a heavy psychedelic/pop sound, and express it through complex original songs. Thanks to some funky Hammond organ, punchy guitars, and the band's unique harmonies, Infinity was no run of the mill outfit. Upon their return to mainland England from a residency in Jersey, they joined the high-profile NEMS agency, alongside heavy hitters like Pink Floyd, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Soft Machine, and Pretty Things. In late 1969 and early 1970, following support slots with The Searchers and Marmalade, Infinity recorded original material for a proposed album, which was meant to explore 'time, space, matter, energy and chicken phal, said in some circles to be so hot in a culinary sense that it's temperature approached infinity,' or so they have said, with tongue-in-cheek, we have to believe. Sadly, they broke up soon after the sessions. The good news is that the band left behind the recordings presented on this disc, which can now be enjoyed in the digital format after the passage of more than four decades! Comes with a 24-page booklet which includes band history, photos, and more, printed on FSC recycled, chlorine-free, 100% post-consumer fiber paper manufactured using biogas energy."

LEO CUYPERS/KASHAVAN MASLAK/HARRY MILLER/WILLEM VAN MANEN/MAARTEN VAN NORDEN/MARTIN VAN DUYNHOVEN - Nachtrit//Drivin' Through The Night [7" flexidisc] (Theaterunie U; EEC) Rare 1979 flexidisc-only release. Featuring Leo Kuypers on piano & composition, Kashavan Maslak & Maarten van Norden on reeds, Willem van Manen on trombone, Harry Miller on bass, Martin van Duynhoven on drums and Linda van Dyck on vocal. Thanks to one of our Dutch pals for leaving us with handful of these ultra-rare treasures. I haven't seen a flexidisc in long time but here we go again. These two songs were recorded for a play that took place in Amsterdam in February of 1979. The first song is a nifty, smoky sort-of jazz tune sung by Ms. Van Dyck. The second song is an instrumental version of the same song with fine solos by the saxes & trombone. I dig the overall late night vibe. A must for collectors like you and me - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery only 3 copies.
7" Flexidisc $20

KEITH TIPPETT - Friday The 13th (La Cooka Ratcha 137 VPT; UK) More recently released on Voiceprint's La Cooka Racha label [CD 137], this is a stunning solo live performance from the early '90s. Tippett's approach to piano is as though the instrument were an entire orchestra (as opposed to, say, Cecil Taylor's piano representing 88 drums); he wrings out huge clusters of dense sound, that, should you get lost in the spell of it, you might forget what combination of instruments, and how many or what of them are electronic (one instrument live, and neither!)
"Some of us have been lucky enough to see/hear Mr. Tippett play an amazing solo set at the Victoriaville Fest a while back - few will ever forget. Besides the superb Victo solo release, FMP has also released three earlier solo piano records, each one a (sometimes dark) treasure. This release is yet another rare solo piano recital from Japan, recorded on Friday the 13th of June in 1997 and the gods are smiling on us once more! Keith begins at the low end of the piano, filling the air with rumbling, suspense filed, resonant, mysterious, pedal down dark clouds of notes. The ominous rumbling builds slowly as the middle part of the piano is also explored, the fog becomes more & more dense. As the rumbling dies down, Keith begins to punctuate with minimal percussion and a small block of wood inside the piano to mute and make the notes tingle. There is light at the end of the tunnel, a little ray of hope as the fog clears. The second half Keith intersperses quieter sections with occasional lightning flash lines, quite a grand mix of different vibrations. Although this was recorded on Friday the 13th and begins in utter darkness, by the end we've all been transported to a better and more hopeful place. Once more Keith Tippett has taken us on a miraculous journey. Transport yourself with this" - BLG
CD $12.00 7 for 6 SALE.

KEITH TIPPETT - The Unlonely Raindancer [2 CD set] (Universe Productions; EEC) CD-R with all original packaging. Keith Tippett was already more than 10 years into his professional career before he ever considered performing as a soloist - at the behest of Dutch fan and concert agent Rob Sotemann, who booked him several Netherlands shows in a one-week period in 1979. Rob and his two partners also arranged for these first-ever solo gigs to be recorded, and formed the Universe Productions label for the sole purpose of releasing some of the recordings as a double LP. Believe me when we tell you how rare this vinyl object from 30 years ago is - you'll NEVER find one for sale!
As for the playing - this is PRIME Tippett, unleashed as the soloist par excellance. Not of this world! Those who have heard his later live solo recordings [for FMP et al] know what we mean. UNforgettable!
2 CD set for $25
