Big Blast of releases from Cuneiform!
WADADA LEO SMITH GOLDEN QUINTET With VIJAY IYER/JOHN LINDBERG/PHEEROAN AkLAFF/DON MOYE/ & ORGANIC With NELS CLINE/MICHAEL GREGORY [JACKSON]/BRANDON ROSS/OKKYUNG LEE et al - Spiritual Dimensions [2 CD set] (Cuneiform 290/291; USA) Outstanding double CD featuring two complete live sets with two very different ensembles. The first disc features Wadada's Golden Quintet live at the Vision Fest XIII in June of 2008 in NYC. Disc 2 features Wadada's Organic live at Firehouse 12 in April of 2009 in New Haven, CT.
Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet is now a Quintet & it has continued to evolve, the personnel for this set consisted of Wadada on trumpet, Vijay Iyer on piano & synth, John Lindberg on bass and Pheeroan AkLaff & Don Moye on drums. I happened to have missed this set, although I do attend nearly every concert at all of the previous Vision Festivals. The problem was the extreme hot temperature in the room at the Soto Clemente Center during an early summer heat spell. Considering that this is a live set, the sound is just perfect. The two master drummers are either side of the stereo spectrum with the piano and bass both lush and spacious in the middle. The ever-amazing Leo Smith is in the center and has a most intense, completely focused and colossal sound. The entire band sounds amazing throughout with some especially inspired interaction and soloing. I often get the feeling that this band captures the magic spirit that Miles' famous sixties quintet created and developed. This disc alone would be considered one this year's best, but then we add disc two to even make things even more incredible.
Wadada Leo Smith's Organic band features Nels Cline, Michael Gregory, Brandon Ross & Lamar Smith on guitars, Okkyung Lee on cello, Skuli Sverrisson on electric bass, John Lindberg on acoustic bass and Pheeraon AkLaff on drums. When Wadada gave a talk at our store earlier this year, he mentioned this CD and that Organic was his dream band. Listening this is disc, I can certainly see why. There are four long pieces and each one creates a special vibe. "South Central L.A. Kulture" features mesmerizing trumpet, eerie cello, spooky layered guitars and eventually an Electric Miles-like slamming, funky groove. Hard to tell who is who but I dig the way each guitar adds something slightly different, making a fascinating tapestry overall. Wadada names his second piece "Angela Davis" after the American political activist & professor, something that Miles Davis also did, naming songs after folks like Billy Preston. This piece does have that great Electric Miles-like groove with two bubbling basses, bowed cello and those evil guitars weaving around one another and Leo placing those notes carefully on top. Both Okkyung on cello and a couple of the guitarists take strong, inspired solos on this piece. "Organic" has another most memorable groove yet keeps shifting into unexpected areas. Skuli takes an amazing fretless bass solo which turns into another superb trumpet & drums exchange. The final piece, "Joy : Spiritual Fire : Joy" has a sublime "In a Silent Way"-like vibe when it begins. When the bass and drums kick in , we are in for another more complex groove. Again each guitarist adds another layer to the web of activity with another burnin' cello solo from Ms. Lee. With all of these infectious grooves and great solos, you would surely want this gig to have gone on all night. Now that would've been something to enjoy. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
2 CD set for $21
JASON ADASIEWICZ'S ROLLDOWN With ARAM SHELTON/JOSH BERMAN/JASON ROEBKE/FRANK ROSALY - Varmint (Cuneiform 292; USA) Led by vibraphonist and composer Jason Adasiewicz [a-dah-shev-its], Varmint is Rolldown's second release. A prolific member of Chicago's jazz and improvised music scene, Jason is quickly gaining widespread recognition through his extensive work as a sideman as well as such high-profile honors as his strong showing in DownBeat's 2007, 2008 and 2009 "Critics' Poll - Rising Star" Vibes category.
The band has been active for over 5 years and features stalwarts from Chicago's vibrant jazz/new music community:
Jason Adasiewicz: vibraphone; Josh Berman: cornet; Aram Shelton: alto saxophone & clarinet; Jason Roebke: bass; Frank Rosaly: drums
Their sound combines Blue Note's classic, avant-leaning '60s albums with contemporary drive, swing, energy, and attack. Varmint features six new compositions by Adasiewicz and a tune written by Andrew Hill.
The music on Varmint is swinging and accessible but also very modern and forward-looking. Recommended if you like: Jackie McLean, Bobby Hutcherson, Andrew Hill, Grachan Moncur III as well as other, newer, good things that make Stanley Crouch shake his fists skyward and shout aloud, "This isn't jazz".

ERGO [BRETT SROKA/CARL MAGUIRE/SHAWN BALTAZOR] - Multitude, Solitude (Cuneiform 289; USA) Ergo is a trio made up of Carl Maguire on Rhodes electric piano and analog synth, Shawn Baltazor on drums and lead by Brett Sroka on trombone and laptop. Their music is one of stark melodic beauty, enveloping electro-acoustic texture and empathic imagination. They have been playing together since 2003, combining the modern sound of electronica and beyond with jazz and ambient music. The basic building blocks of their sound are beats and electronics, trombone, the Fender Rhodes and drums. The music here generally develops slowly but it's also very accessible while remaining something that holds active interest.
In the early 2000s, Brett Sroka began exploring beyond his Jazz background and became fascinated with electronic music, surrounding himself with synthesizers and software. As he sought to reconcile the six hundred years of technology between trombone and computer he also found musicians of similarly elastic and adventurous temperaments. As they continued to play together, an idiosyncratic dynamic began to cohere and Ergo was born. With their debut cd, the band put forth a statement of purpose and were lauded by AllAboutJazz-NY for Best Debut CD of 2006. Ergo's sophomore cd, 'multitude, solitude' brings the band further into it's own. They have refined a unique style of unadorned melody and intrepid improvisation with a sensual approach to the post-modern techniques of sampling, synthesis and signal processing.
"Trombonist Brett Sroka, keyboardist Carl Maguire and drummer Shawn Baltazor are all part of a generation for which Autechre and Sigur Ros are as pressing concerns as Armstrong and Sun Ra. That's certainly evident in the band's timbral sophistica
tion, spacey contours and slinky grooves." - Time Out New York

BEAT CIRCUS [BRIAN CARPENTER/BRANDON SEABROOK/BRIGGAN KRAUSS/ALEC K REDFEARN et al] - Boy From Black Mountain (Cuneiform 294; USA) The current edition of the band features a unusual and versatile instrumentation. Brian brought in violinist Paran Amirinazari and violist Jordan Voelker (who also provide background vocals), trombonist Doug LaRosa, and the rockabilly-style rhythm section composed of upright bassist Paul Dilley, guitarist/banjoist Andrew Stern, and drummer Gavin McCarthy. The understatedly beautiful cover artwork and illustrations within the full color booklet are by Carson Ellis, known for her work on albums by The Decemberists
Boy From Black Mountain began shortly after Carpenter's son was diagnosed with autism in late 2006. He began writing songs inspired by the experience of living with his son during the time of diagnosis and treatment. Carpenter further dedicates the album to his father and grandparents, whose lives as watermelon farmers in the rural Bible Belt inspired some of the songs. This is a very artful-yet-accessible album with great lyrics, memorable songs and rich orchestrations. In addition to the songs are a handful of haunting instrumentals which help to frame the overall work of the songs to a larger canvas.
"To create a concept album is nothing new. Countless acts have done it in the history of music, but to create a vision, and in this case a trilogy, takes some experienced creativeness and Brian Carpenter has set out to make his vision a reality. With the release Boy From Black Mountain, the second album in the 'Weird American Gothic' trilogy, Carpenter and his Beat Circus have created something completely unique and yet somehow amazing. Most concept albums fall short due to a lack of the artists understanding that while filling the concept lyrically and musically, the album still has to be listenable and captivating. Carpenter gets that. The lyrics throughout this album aren't about some made up land or characters, but rather the life he has experienced... To bring the songs to life with a Southern Gothic feel, Carpenter has used a wide range of not so typical instruments that at any given time include accordion, viola, tuba, cello, and Chinese Suona. Wrap the odd instrumentation around a deep and dark lead vocal that is often times accompanied by a haunting soprano and this album comes alive. Concept albums are typically not my thing but this one delivers on every level from relatable lyrics to a well-crafted story of everyday life." - Guest List

ZEVIOUS - After The Air Raid (Cuneiform 287; USA) "The music of Zevious shrewdly juxtaposes order and its opposite: structural intensity pushed to its breaking point in the most appealing way. These boys are brilliant and fearless." - Vijay Iyer
Zevious are a unique electric jazz band for the modern era. This instrumental power trio are equally influenced by the sound of early John McLaughlin/Tony Williams Lifetime, Meshuggah, the 'downtown punk-jazz-harmolodic' school (James Blood Ulmer/Music Revelation Ensemble, Decoding Society, Curlew), Magma, Vijay Iyer and Ben Monder among others. This is not your father's jazz band.
Zevious used to be a jazz guitar trio. Their 2007 self-titled debut CD featured a set of knotty jazz compositions and technical soloing that the group performed at jazz clubs. Very quickly thereafter, by the beginning of 2008, the band had broken away from the bonds of tradition and were developing a sound that had been developing and incubating since their first album. Mike ditched the jazz guitar for a Telecaster and DeBlase replaced his upright with an electric bass and they both picked up distortion pedals and cranked them up. Zevious began combining progressive rock grooves, tech metal, structured group improvisation, and complex song forms with a conventional jazz sound, creating a unique compositional style. Their new sound points towards a focused musical ground where it is apparent that this band can shred. Their songs now wind through peaks and valleys of odd-metered and hard-hitting bass and drum grooves with contrapuntal guitar interjections that morph into unison riffing, with hard-hitting, complex drum workouts and stop-on-a-dime style guitar breaks coupled with subtle, brooding segments. Their second album After the Air Raid is the culmination of nearly two years of hard compositional and rehearsal labor and showcases a powerful, rhythmically intense and highly structured sound, making this a record with lasting depth. Beautifully and simply recorded, mixed and mastered by Colin Marston (of Behold...the Arctopus), the striking live sound of the band is masterfully presented

TYSHAWN SOREY With TODD NEUFELD/THOMAS MORGAN - Koan (482 Music 1069; USA) Featuring Todd Neufeld on guitars, Thomas Morgan on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums & compositions. When young drum wiz & composer, Tyshawn Sorey curated The Stone in a last month (August, 2009), we got a chance to see & hear how diverse this wonderful musician and composer has become in the past few years since appeared on the scene. I caught Tyshawn on some half dozen nights and was knocked out on various levels. Although Tyshawn has worked with a large number of collaborators like Vijay Iyer, Fieldwork, Kali Fasteau, Michael Dessen, John Escreet, Jacan Manricks, Steve Lehman and Anthony Braxton, this is only Tyshawn's second disc as a leader.
Tyshawn composed or co-composed all six pieces on this disc. Mr. Sorey has a unique way of stretching his pieces out and suspending time. On "Awakening", it is as if we are floating in a dream-world with some Loren Mazzacane-like shimmering notes hanging in the air. When Tyshawn finally enters it is with a cosmic reverberating splash. The pieces are both ultra-subtle and often mesmerizing. What makes this trio unique is that pieces sound written or planned and not like any other jazz guitar trio that I've heard. I didn't know of their guitarist, Todd Neufeld before this, but did know Thomas Morgan from his work with Paul Motian, Dave Binney, Joey Baron and John Abercrombie. It takes some patience to appreciate what is special about this music since nothing hits you over the head. There is something most enchanting about this in the way that things unfold with delicacy and grace. The real creativity happens in between the cracks and in unexpected places. This is music to be savored for quiet reflection. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
CD $15
JEFF MARX/JOHN SIEGEL/JOHN ESPOSITO - Inyo (Sunjump CD 08; USA) Recorded Catskill, NY, 2008. The first trio recording of eleven new compositions by Marx, Siegel and Esposito, former members of Second Sight. The music on Inyo started as a series of melodic sketches. Everything else - the harmony, the rhythmic interpretation and the overall shape of the pieces - was improvised.
CD $14
VINNY GOLIA/DAMON SMITH/WEASEL WALTER - Grosse Messer (ugExplode 34; USA) Featuring Vinny Golia on soprillo, tenor & bass saxes & saxello, Damon Smith on double bass and Weasel Walter on drums. Starting with some harrowing bass sax, we know we are in store for some intense and often throttling free improv from this incredible West Coast all-star trio. Weasel Walter has done a great job of capturing this spirited free music in all of its glory. "Plancon a Picot" erupts like Godzilla ripping apart a small village with barely controlled power. There is short piece called "Morning Star" where it is difficult to tell apart the restrained squealing sax, bowed bass and rubbed cymbals, but it does sound great together. On "Murder-Hole" Weasel's incredible double bass-drum & cymbal work pushes the rest of the trio higher and higher, spinning furiously and tightly together. A soprillo is a custom-made sax that is even smaller than a sopranino sax and its range even higher. There are only a few in existence, so it is good to hear Mr. Golia spinning out those notes that reach for the upper end of our hearing and nerves. On the other hand, a bass sax is another rarely used instrument that reaches into the lower depths. And again, Vinny does a fine job of exploring those deep tones with Damon's throbbing bass and Weasel's immense drumming following wherever the trio goes. I dig the way no matter where Vinny goes, the trio follow him, push and prod and connect time and again. The mighty Weasel Walter and his troops continue to surprise us with their craft, creativity and spirit. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery

FLYING LUTTENBACHERS [WEASEL WALTER/MICK BARR/MIKE GREEN/ED RODRIGUEZ] - Cataclysm (ugExplode 19; USA) A reissue of this classic 2006 release featuring WW, Ed Rodriguez (Deerhoof), Mike Green (Burmese) and Mick Barr (Krallice). Same music as the original issue, now with mini-gatefold repackaging. If you missed it the first time around, here's your second chance!!!!

JIMMY BENNINGTON TRIO with MICHAEL BISIO & DAVID HANEY//HERBIE NICHOLS - Another Friend; The Music of Herbie Nichols (That Swan 1006; USA) Review next week..
CD $13
JIMMY BENNINGTON/JULIAN PRIESTER - Portraits And Silhouettes (That Swan 1005; USA) On Portraits and Silhouettes, the soft-spoke veteran is joined by the relatively youthful, 37 year-old Jimmy Bennington, whose incisive percussion work gently propels the session. A resident of Chicago-Priester's hometown-Bennington is at his best as an effervescent foil to Priester's glowing, often laconic statements. On the title track, he sustains a whitewash of cymbal noise while punctuating and responding to Priester's statements with mallet accents or a well-placed bass drum thwack. The modus operandi is the same on "Mood Indigo" and "Blount"-a Bennington original in homage of Sun Ra-and on each, the trombonist responds with vigorous, bop-inflected retorts.
The duo format suits both men well, as does the repertoire-a series of originals, covers and free improvisations that caters to their shared avant-garde leanings. On record and in person (with drummer Aaron Alexander) Priester revels in the freedom the tunes and lack of harmonic backing allow. His solos grow organically, unencumbered by fixed forms or expectations. They soar to unexpected vistas, take strange turns and end up where you least expect them: who could ask for more? - Matthew Miller, AAJ-NY
CD $13
TYONDAI BRAXTON - Central Market (Warp 184; UK) "For more than a decade, Tyondai Braxton has fine-tuned his unique approach as 'quite literally' a solo artist. Working by himself on stage and in the studio, he employed guitar, voice, looping and delay pedals plus various found objects to create work that simulates the sound of a large ensemble. His live performances are as technically astonishing as they are sonically mesmerizing. However, on his Warp Records debut and second full-length solo album, Central Market, Braxton takes a radically different course from the 'orchestrated loops' that had become his trademark: For the first time in his solo career, he's composed for a real orchestra. The result is an exhilarating mix of acoustic and electronic instrumentation; surprisingly pastoral moments give way to more clangorous passages that will immediately appeal to fans of avant-rock quartet Battles, of which Braxton is a member. There are plenty of ominous, unsettling sounds, particularly in its later tracks, but the sheer ambition of Central Market gives the album an uplifting, almost joyful quality. The spirit of the playing and the inventiveness of the arrangements make the entire experience exciting and fun, a word Braxton often employs when describing the process of bringing Central Market to fruition."

New from Drip audio!
TONY WILSON 6TET - The People Look Like Flowers at Last (Drip Audio 482; Canada) Tony Wilson on guitar & harmonica, with: Peggy Lee on cello, Dave Say on tenor & soprano sax & flute, Kevin Elaschuk on trumpet & flugel, Paul Blaney on bass and Dylan Van der Schyff on drums. This is Vancouver-based guitarist, Tony Wilson's fourth disc for the Drip Audio label and his second one with his sextet, although the personnel has changed somewhat. Like the previous three discs, this one is also pretty great. Things begin with a poignant cello, harmonica and percussion trio before breaking into a spirited, swinging jazz/rock groove piece with some spirited el. guitar, cello and trumpet interaction and tightly written charts. Peggy Lee's impressive cello is featured on "Lachyrmae-Movement 2" (by Benjamin Britten), working intricately with Tony's guitar. The Britten piece is often quite lovely and well-played with a few "Variations" written by Mr. Wilson based on Britten's music. For "Arpeggio" Dylan van der Schyff's great drums & David's feisty tenor sax are featured amongst the other tight and spirited playing by the rest of the ensemble. The title piece features some exquisite harmonies for the entire sextet and elegant solos from the trumpet and guitar. "Let the Monkeys Dance" includes a strong guitar and drums duo that is both intricate and restrained simultaneously. The final piece, "Variations on a Theme by Bill Monroe" is a great, rousing closer but doesn't remind me of the bluegrass legend very much. The mighty Tony Wilson pulls another rabbit out of his hat with this wonderful disc. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
CD $14
VIVIANE HOULE - Treize (Drip Audio 481; Canada) Viviane Houle's debut solo release, Treize, is an intense, subversive and highly submersive album that documents the artistry of this vocal improviser through collaborations with members of Vancouver's rich creative music scene. Through Treize's (produced by Jesse Zubot) thirteen improvised duets, Houle takes the listener on a rigorous, but gorgeous journey of dense textures, tender melodic fragments, hypnotic tensions, abstracted texts, restrained chaos and silent refuge. The simmering intensity and unveiled rawness of Houle's voice acts as a guidepost through the release. As a vocalist and improviser, Houle displays a chameleon-esque quality, moving effortlessly between abstract free-improvisational textures and hauntingly beautiful soundscapes. Bel canto beauty and lush melodic phrases give way to intimate whispers, deep guttural bellows and decibel defying vocal squelches as Houle and her collaborators transform voice and instrument into highly evocative sonic environments. Lyrically, Houle offers fragmented tales of unspoken loss, faltering attempts at love and forgiveness, fragile hopes and cautious dreams. Her texts emerge and are submerged within each improvisation.
Houle's collaborators on Treize's duets represent a cross section of Vancouver's finest improvisers: Peggy Lee (cello), Lisa Miller (piano), Coat Cooke (saxophone), Kenton Loewen (drums), Ron Samworth (guitar), Chris Gestrin (analog keyboards), Jesse Zubot (violin), Jeremy Berkman (trombone), Paul Plimley (piano), Jeff Younger (guitar), Clyde Reed (bass), Brent Belke (guitar), Stefan Smulovitz (laptop - kenaxis). The pieces on Treize embody the latest in a series of musical conversations between Houle and a group of musicians with whom she regularly collaborates. A shared language, mutual respect, curiosity and fearless abandon mark each of the thirteen duets. An intense and passionate journey, Trieze also offers the listener exquisite moments of rest, of play of hope.

COPILOTS - Escape Through The Trees (Drip Audio 456; Canada) On 'Escape Through The Trees', their first CD on Drip Audio, Copilots have captured a sound that is familiar, unique, eclectic and cohesive, tapping deep into elements of pop, psychedelic, punk and classic rock. Escape Through The Trees documents the group moving forward into new sonic territory from it's original release, further exploring the talents of the band members' gifted songwriting and musicianship.
Copilots are a five piece rock band from Vancouver, BC. Formed in 2005, their debut self-titled (2007) CD received glowing reviews across Canada. The band is Skye Brooks - guitar/vocals (Inhabitants, Fond of Tigers, Veda Hille, Ndidi Onukwulu), Pete Schmitt - bass/vocals (Inhabitants, Josh Martinez), Chad MacQuarrie - guitar/vocals (DarkBlueWorld, NOW Orchestra, Carol Pope), Karma Sohn - keys/vocals & Dylan Smith - drums. There is an interesting history to some of these Copilots as Skye Brooks is known for his explosive drumming skills with his JUNO nominated band Inhabitants and the genre-busting Fond of Tigers. Skye also regularly backs up unique songstresses such as Veda Hille, Ndidi Onukwulu & Jill Barber. With Copilots Skye picks up the guitar and steps in front of the mic. Chad MacQuarrie once led the critically acclaimed hardcore band Karen Foster that now backs up Carol Pope on her Western Canadian dates.
These musicians backgrounds are equally rooted in creative/improvised music as well as the many facets of rock and roll. Their adventurous spirit reveals itself in memorable melodies, propulsive and seamless odd time rhythms, and dream-like lyrisism that explores the subconsious, human nature and the power of wilderness. A restrained intensity simmers throughout their performances, at times boiling over into ecstactic abandon.

DARKBLUEWORLD [DARK BLUE WORLD: ELIZABETH FISCHER et al] - The Perilous Beauty of Madness (Drip Audio 445; Canada) DarkBlueWorld is singer/poet Elizabeth Fischer's essential vehicle for her collaborations with noted Canadian musicians. Drawing on Fischer's texts, expressive vocal style and the wide ranging musical influences the members bring to the group, DarkBlueWorld creates and perform material that is emotionally layered, often acerbic or darkly satirical, with subtly complex harmonic and rhythmic structures - individualized, intelligent expressions intended to communicate the complexities of human experience in sophisticated yet accessible song formats.
All the members of the group are established artists in their own right; a recognized vocalist, composer and lyricist, Elizabeth Fischer is the former leader of the Animal Slaves, a seminal Canadian alternative art-rock band in the 80's. She has recorded and performed with noted international musicians, has performed Hungarian songs and French chansons, and continues to explore the music of Brecht/Weill and Hans Eisler in a number of contexts. She also creates all of the group's visual material. Gordon Grdina, a prolific composer and arranger who also leads his own ensembles, has a deeply lyrical approach to music. He has a keen ear for unusual textures and an eclectic approach to music making which complements Fischer's musical sensibilities. Tommy Babin has a particular affinity for creative music and Chad MacQuarrie's expressionistic, aggressive sound compliments Fischer's darker, edgier material. Bernie Arai is a respected drummer and composer with many international appearances to his credit.

FOND OF TIGERS - Release The Saviours (Drip Audio 16; Canada) Fond of Tigers' second album, Release the Saviours is an ambitious and focused synthesis of mathy freakouts, off-kilter jazz, ambient sound sculpture, abstract improvisation, and a rare feel for making music that is both challenging and highly listenable. Much of the ecstatic intensity on Release the Saviours comes from the group's self-immolating interest in unusual rhythmic and melodic structure, as well as instrumental arrangements that are the sonic equivalent of roller derby and jai-alai played simultaneously in a racquetball court. But even when some parts sound like the band has split into teams and angrily squared off against each other, the attentive listener is rewarded - after some suspense - as the parts come do at last come together, the music as joyful as it is visceral.

DOMINIQUE LEONE - Abstract Expression (Important 266; USA) "Dominique is a classically trained artist and composer originally from Texas. He's one of a growing number of college-educated musical auteurs with more than a slight command of pop history and theory chops, and writing songs for joyous, infatuated (or over saturated) people. All of his music could be considered 'pop' of a sort, though with dashes of prog, classical music, electronica, and even noise. It's catchy but ambitious; crafted but not sterile; interesting but not pretentious. It's just a lot of fucking fun! He lists Brian Wilson, Claude Debussy, Randy Newman, Paul McCartney, Andy Partridge, Glenn Gould, ABBA, Miles Davis, Magma, Fleetwood Mac and Olivier Messiaen as personal heroes. He's played, written or recorded with Lindstrom, Boredoms, Mungolian JetSet, Kevin Blechdom, Cryptacize, Sonic Youth's William Winant, R. Stevie Moore, Wobbly, MaryClare Brzytwa, Odawas and many others.

MERZBOW [MASAMI AKITA] - 13 Japanese Birds Pt 9: Hiyodori (Important 265; USA) The ninth installment in the series and it's exceptional: Masami Akita expresses a rich tableau of sound that, over the course of the album's three tracks, slowly begins to reveal itself as an autonomous realm, free from mental interference, beyond good and evil, negating human notions of time and space. Like the deepest state of transcendental meditation, only louder. Over the course of this series, Merzbow's noise has taken flight, not just through the signification of birds, but with the very breath of life. "Merzbow's 13 Japanese Birds is a 13 month series of releases inspired by Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue D'Oiseaux. Beginning in January 2009 one volume of 13 Japanese Birds will be released each month. The 13th and final volume will be released January 2010. Each volume will be a one time pressing of 1,000 copies. Cover art by Jenny Akita.

GARY HIGGINS - Seconds (Drag City 395; USA) "The music business is full of funny stories -- and some of them aren't that funny at all. Take Gary Higgins. In the early 70s, he made a great record, the culmination of years of listening and playing and work. Then he went to jail for marijuana possession, a short stint, but still, the kind of crime that's almost not a crime these days. The record came out -- but without him to promote it, almost nobody heard it, until... 2005: Red Hash, Higgins' megaobscure psychedelic folk-rock masterpiece is reissued on CD, drawing all kinds of acclaim and selling thousands of copies. Shows are played, interviews are done. But how to answer the question, why haven't you made another record since then? 2009: Gary Higgins' Seconds. is here to answer the question. It's a beautiful acoustic-based record featuring careful, melancholy arrangements in the tradition set by his famous previous record -- but with a few unpredictable musical touches. Additionally, Seconds. weaves black threads of lyrical reflection into its sleeve in the shortlived Higgins tradition. His was never a hippie-dippy perspective -- back in the day, his songs featured a thoughtful, but worldweary, occasionally even paranoid perspective. And today, he opens Seconds. with the couplet 'I got demons on my back/they don't travel nice.' Gary is from the original singer-songwriter wave of rock and roll. There's no need for him to pretend that his songs are being sung from another point of view. And so Seconds. strings together moments of life, working through regrets and reflections on fallibility, the odd flashback, and a few hopes for the future over the course of seven deep songs. Whether the material has been gathered in the years since his reemergence in 2005 or over the longer stretch since the last released Higgins material, it flows with oneness. And accompanied by his fellow travellers (including a couple Red Hash players as well as his son), he's put together a bold and colorful statement of where he's at today. Seconds. ain't no Sweet Baby James, or anyone else for that matter. This is the sound of Gary Higgins, making music and digging it once again."

OM [AL CISNEROS/EMIL AMOS] - God Is Good (Drag City 404; USA) "It's been years now -- just about two, judging from the sun. OM have done their time in the desert, and ever-changing, are returned. Today, they say, God is Good. Are you surprised? Perhaps you've haven't understood what OM was saying to you. But perhaps you felt something... It's true that the one way pursued by OM leads in many different directions. It is a mystic path. Songs come from innumerable sources, filtering through the external and the internal. OM albums are rituals, personal convictions transcripted into verse. Playing the music is visceral, emotional, a catharsis of soul and spirit. As the ghat liberates soul from body to the ultimate, so too do OM strive to disengage from the finite object of their objective mortal self to rest in the empty and timeless witness. And in doing so, they seek to release you as well. As ever, dynamic relationships and the slow building of mood are attenuations that shape the structures of God is Good. With careful microscopic increase, the energy grows through the four songs, leading towards moments that one could interpret...revelation? Oblivion? Awakening? Since 2004, OM have burned their name into the annals, trolled the fertile crescent, faithfully made more out of what little was put into their hands, forged three full-length albums from white-hot evaluations of the infinite. The duo that is OM is composed of bass and drums and whatever else comes into their mind that will serve the song and do it justice. Al Cisneros has been pursuing the pure note as OM (and previously with Sleep) for many years now, but this is the first OM record to feature the battery of Emil Amos, who replaces Chris Haikus in the chair. You can go to the shelf and study it: there are comparative religions, philosophy, metaphysics, mythology, and history. Turn around, and there is OM. Their vibrations of the philosophical and the physical are meant to move you. Believe."

ROGER REYNOLDS - Epigram And Evolution: Complete Piano Works [2 CD Set] (mode 212; USA) "These piano pieces were written at every turning point in Roger Reynolds' creative life, marking his evolution. The music is driven by relentless attacks toward catharsis, but also bittersweet chords, and trembling, rolling, wandering or sweeping masses of sound. We feel as though we are being pushed around by forces beyond human imagination. This sense of being carried away by an uninterrupted undercurrent may be the image of the world we live in. The featured pianists are the legendary Yuji Takahashi (who also contributed a rare new recording for the set), and contemporary music specialists Eric Huebner and Marilyn Nonken. This specially priced 2-CD set combines new recordings with reissues of classic analog performances. 'Epigram and Evolution,' Reynolds' earliest piano work was premiered at the ONCE Festival in Ann Arbor by Robert Ashley. Reynolds moved to Europe in 1963, and 'Fantasy for Pianist' marks the change of intellectual climate. Premiered at the Warsaw Autumn Festival by John Tilbury, it begins with a chordal whirlwind over explosive blasts, leading to asynchronous tapping, resonance, and whirls. Experimental ways of playing are applied on the piano strings: plucking with a pick, wound string rasps, and harmonics produced by touching nodes on the struck strings. 'Traces' uses six loudspeakers surrounding the audience with amplified instruments and ring-modulated resonances. The piano part is 'traced' by a flute and cello involving timbre manipulation, with electronic shadows over them. 'Less Than Two' was written for pianists Gilbert Kalish and James Freeman, and percussionists Ray DesRoches and Richard Fitz, as a companion piece for George Crumb's 'Makrokosmos III (Music for a Summer Evening).' It was premiered, along with the Crumb piece, at The Library of Congress in 1979. Reynolds' architectural complexity culminates in 'Variation': a single movement following a preliminary graphic scheme, it allows room for playful and expressive flexibility left to the performer. It was premiered by Aleck Karis. 'imagE/piano' and 'imAge/piano' are a part of recent project of writing pairs of short, complementary pieces for different instruments. The E in 'imagE' stands for 'evocative' and A in 'imAge' for 'articulate,' involving a composing technique based on montage and editing. Liner notes by Yuji Takahashi."
