WE REJOICE!
Finally, we - and you - can relax!
We've found our new space - a renovated basement in the heart of NYC's Chinatown - at 13 Monroe Street!
We are planning to be open for business there by the first week of January 2009, if not sooner.
We will be focusing even more on our mail-order/web sales at this new location, but we will have a new 'hours of operation' schedule so all our cherished NY and global customers can visit - and one can always call and ask about visiting at other times if those hours do not accommodate one's schedule for a visit when traveling to/through New York City.

JOHN ZORN - FilmWorks XX: Sholem Aleichem [sndtck] (Tzadik 7369; USA) This twentieth volume of John Zorn's exciting FilmWorks series features the fabulous accordionist Rob Burger and harpist Carol Emanuel accompanied by the world acclaimed Masada String Trio performing music for a documentary on the 19th century Jewish writer Sholem Aleichem. Known primarily for the Tevye stories that inspired Fiddler on the Roof, Aleichem wrote tales in Russian, Hebrew and Yiddish that have a dark subtext reminiscent of Kafka and Poe. Avoiding overt klezmer references, Zorn's score both breaks with and draws upon tradition, dramatizing the writer's life and work with lyricism, orchestral color and a keen sense of irony and black humor.

AMIR ZIV'S KOTKOT With MARC RIBOT/CYRO BAPTISTA/SHAHZAD ISMAILY - Alive At Tonic (Mai Nya Neem 01; USA) Featuring Amir Ziv on drums, Marc Ribot on guitar, Cyro Baptista on percussion & vocals and Shahzad Ismaily on bass. This amazing quartet was recorded live at Tonic in November of 2003 and May of 2004. Israeli powerhouse drummer, Amir Ziv, used to live in LA, studied with Kenwood Denard, had a crazy drum n' bass band called Droid and was a member of Cyro Baptista's Beat the Donkey. Amir was knocked by Marc Ribot's guitar playing on a Lounge Lizards disc that he heard and decided he had to work with Mr. Ribot. It took nearly a decade for the Amir & Marc to play together with Beat the Donkey. Percussion wizard Cyro Baptista continues to blow minds playing with everyone from John Zorn to Derek Bailey to Cassandra Wilson. Bassist & multi-instrumental hero, Shahzad Ismaily also is in demand and seemingly everywhere playing Ribot's colossal power trio Ceramic Dog as well as with Carla Kihlstedt in Two Foot Yard and Doveman.
Starting with "Let's Surf-We're in Hell," the band erupts right from the gitgo. It sounds like surf/metal with its tongue firmly in cheek. Too much and that's just the first track! I dig the way that Marc and Shahzad play a series of tight lines against/with one another. Amir does a great job of settting up different grooves or structures for each piece. "Won't U Be My Porcupine" has a twisted reggae/funk groove with subtle jazz/punk wah-wah guitar from Ribot, Shahzad's dub bass and both Cyro & Amir's swirling percussion with selective effects used like echo or delay. Cyro is a master of various percussion & vocal sounds and effects. I caught Cyro playing in three sets with John Zorn at the Guelph Jazz Fest last week (9/708) and he never ceases to amaze any who hear & see him life. Cyro is all over this disc adding his magic to each piece without playing constantly since Amir is a great drummer on his own and is often the center of the rhythmic cyclone. On "My Dentist in Hawaii", the quartet jams, yet remains focused, creating dark, twisted moods with some astonishing guitar work from Ribot. What is extraordinary about this quartet is that each member is an integral part of their sound and direction. At first, I thought that 74+ minutes might be a bit too long, but there is nothing superfluous about this disc, it is consistently engaging throughout. And they cover a great deal of ground: rock, jazz, jamband, space-music, noise, dub, ethnic sounds, etc. Last April of this year (2008) was the anniversary of the closing of Tonic, our favorite for nearly a decade and the center of the downtown scene in many ways. This disc seems to capture the spirit of a set at Tonic in all of its glory. Amir Ziv's Kotkot will play a CD release set at The Abrams Center (466 Grand St), this Saturday, September 13th at 8pm. Local adventurous listeners in-the-know, will not want to miss this special gig! It was booked by Melissa from Tonic who is back in action organizing gigs at the Abrams Center and at Pousson Rouge. - BLG

RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA With KADRI GOPALNATH & THE DAKSHINA ENSEMBLE - Kinsmen (Pi 28; USA) Kinsmen is a groundbreaking project by alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa that melds jazz with South Indian music into a single organic whole. Mahanthappa, recently named a Top 10 alto saxophonist in the 2008 DownBeat Critic's Poll, is one of the most innovative young musicians in jazz today. Kinsmen is his collaboration with Kadri Gopalnath, a living legend of Indian music known as The Emperor of the Saxophone, a true innovator in bringing the saxophone to Indian classical music. The music on Kinsmen, featuring their co-led Dakshina Ensemble, is exemplar of successful multicultural, transnational collaboration. Utilizing his extensive knowledge of both jazz and the traditional melodic and rhythmic concepts of Indian music, Mahanthappa has masterfully provided a framework that has brought out the best in all the musicians, resulting in spectacular interaction and virtuosic displays from Gopalnath, A. Kanyakumari on violin and Rez Abassi on guitar. The band also features Poovalur Sriji on Mridangam (South Indian barrel drum), Carlo de Rosa on acoustic bass and royal hartigan on drums.

ANAT COHEN - Notes From The Village (Anzic 1302; USA) Anat plays clarinet (as well as tenor and soprano saxaphone), accompanied by pianist Jason Lindner, bassist Omer Avital, drummer Daniel Freedman, and guitarist Gilad Hekselman on two cuts. Rising jazz star Anat Cohen leads her New York all-star quartet through fresh originals, tunes by Fats Waller, John Coltrane, Sam Cooke and Ernesto Lecuona. This captivating, soulful album builds on Cohen's acclaimed 2007 releases 'Noir' and 'Poetica' capturing the thrilling energy of her live shows, and proving her to be an artistically adventurous writer and performer.

SAMLA MAMMAS MANNA/ZAMLA MAMMAZ MANNA [LARS HOLLMER et al] & With GREGORY ALLAN FITZPATRICK/BILDCIRKUS - Samla/Zamla Box: Samla Mammas Manna/Maltid (Meal Time)/Klossa Knapitatet/Schlagerns Mystik (The Mystery Of Popular Music)/For Aldre Nybegynnare (For Older Beginners)/Familjesprickor (Family Cracks)/Snorungarnas Symfoni (Symphony Of The Brats)/Bildcirkus [8 CD Box Set] (DIW/Arcangelo 3017; Japan) "Although little known in the U.S., the experimental and quirky jazz-fusion/progressive rock outfit Samla Mammas Manna [associated since the '70s with other R.I.O. bands such as Henry Cow, Aksak Maboul, The Muffins, and Etron Fou Leloublan] has enjoyed a following in Scandinavia since the early 1970s. Samla was formed in Uppsala, Sweden in 1969, when its original lineup consisted of keyboardist/accordionist Lars Hollmer, bassist Lars Krantz, drummer Hans Bruniusson and percussionist Karl Henrik "Bebben" Berg. Samla recorded its self-titled debut album of 1971 for Silence Records. Berg left the group that year, and Samla spent several months as a trio before guitarist Coste Apetrea came on board in 1972. Samla's second album Maltid (Meal Time), came out on Silence in 1974 and was followed by Klossa Knapitatet (also on Silence) in 1975 and the MNW release Snorungarnas Symfoni (Symphony of the Brats), a collaboration between American composer Gregory Allan Fitzpatrick and the Samlas, in 1976. Fitzpatrick and the Samlas also collaborated under the group name Bildcirkus in 1978. In 1977, Apetrea left the group and was replaced by Eino Haapala, who is featured on the Silence double-LP For Aldre Nybegynnare/Schlagerns Mystik. Samla, which continued to go through personnel changes, changed its name to Zamla Mammaz Manna in the late 1970s, and in 1980, it recorded Familjesprickor (Family Cracks) before breaking up, and a few years later Lars formed Von Zamla to carry on the torch" - Alex Henderson, AMG

WILLEM BREUKER KOLLEKTIEF + VERA BETHS - Fidget (BVhaast 0407; Netherlands) Tracks 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 ,10, 12 and 13 recorded in Studio Grasland, Haarlem, the Netherlands on 3 June 2003 and mixed at Studio Power Sound by Paul Pouwer on 16 March 2006 and 2 and 6 June 2007. Vocals on tracks 10 and 13 recorded on 6 July 2007. Tracks 3 and 11 were recorded live at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam on 22 September 2005 upon the occasion of the International Congress "Conseil International des Auteurs de Musique", CIAM/CISAC. Track 8 recorded in Haarlem at the Toneelschuur 23 February 2007 by Guido Nieuwdorp.
This one features the Willem Breuker Kollektief with guest violinist Vera Beths plus the New Music Choir. The composers include Alex Von Schlippenbach, Charles Mingus, Hanns Eisler, Bertolt Brecht, Jules Massenet, Pablo de Sarasate and Willem Breuker. Breuker's "New Pillars" starts off our journey with some swell Zappa-like circus music. Pianist, Henk de Jonge, sounds especially inspired and takes a great piano solo. The cartoonish music is quite delightful and had me smiling in no time. Longtime Breuker bassist, Arjen Gorter takes an outstanding contrabass solo on this piece as well. Breuker does a fine job of arranging a Protestant resistance song called ""Oh Holland, Beware" which features the tasty voices of the New Music Choir. British composer, Reginald Forsythe, wrote for Benny Goodman, Fats Waller and Stuff Smith. His piece here, "Lullaby" is lovely and haunting. The informative liner notes here tell us about each composer and helps to put this music in a clear perspective. Schlippenbach's "Minor Double Blues" is a blast with some burning tenor sax from Breuker and more great bass from Mr. Gorter. Ms. Beths is featured on Pablo de Sarasate's "Gypsy Melodies," which jumps between more restrained and more spirited Gypsy-like melodies, another gas! Vera also plays an amazing solo version of Breuker's piece, "Fidget". Breuker also does a splendid job of arranging Mingus' classic song, "Fables of Faubus," a tune I would think it would difficult to improve upon, but Breuker does a wonderful job with some great trombone by Andy Bruce. Two other highlights on this disc feature the songs of Eisler & Brecht, which are sung plaintively by Breuker himself. What I find interesting is how Breuker finds a piece like Jan Pieterzoon Sweelinck's "Chromatic Fantasy" from the late 1500's and that it somehow fits with the current repertoire by the Kollektief. This extraordinary Dutch ensemble has been around for decades and continues to surprise and delight us with their vast and diverse catalogue. - BLG

KRISTOFFER ZEGERS - The Pendulum Of Kristoffer Zegers (BVhaast 0208; Netherlands) Some days the world is a black hole, God seems to be hiding behind dark clouds and all mankind is like a pitiful ant nest. Some days the sun shines. Then the smallest gesture is pregnant with meaning and Bach salves the soul. The world of Kristoffer Zegers is polarized. He moves between the positive and negative, sometimes like a pinball, sometimes like a sailboat slowly tacking on an almost windless day. Were Zegers a trash collector or accountant, this would be of interest primarily to him alone. But he is a composer. And his emotional state directly affects what he writes and we hear. It is, perhaps, the foundation beneath his work.
" Mr. Zegers is a young (35 yrs in 2008) Dutch composer who studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in the mid-nineties. This is his first disc as a composer. The first three pieces are performed by the Kohinoor Sax Quartet with electronics by the composer. "Praetor" opens and Zegers takes the sacred music of Michael Praetorius and slowly mutates it by adding somewhat disorienting electronics to the music as it develops. For "Singularity IV," electronic voices slowly melt into one another and sound like an organ being turned inside out with layers of ghost-like voices featured in the second half being manipulated into harrowing mutant organ-like sonics. "Venlafazine" features the sax quartet playing a series intricate counterpoint parts with more eerie electronics added. On "Matth" layers of choral voices (from "St. Matthews Passion") are sped up and twisted into odd shapes and fragmented. Very strange indeed. Odd electronic sounds and samples are again bent into disturbing shapes on "Flexinom III". Has someone taken a copy of "Switched-on-Bach" and put it into a blender? Kristoffer takes a harpishord recording on "Detonatie" and slowly alters it until it sounds like a scary funhouse organ with ghost-like sounds floating. What I like most about this disc is the way all the pieces have a disorienting quality which seems to transform reality into a different world or dimension." - BLG

CHRIS FORSYTH - Live Journal At The Mice Machine VIP Dance Floor (Incunabulum 07/BVHaast; Netherlands) Guitarist/composer Chris Forsyth cuts a wide path through the contemporary music scene with projects ranging from avant-rock to electro-acoustic improv to unclassifiable folk, noise & drone hybrids. He is perhaps best known as a founding member of the iconoclastic group Peeesseye More recently, Forsyth has begun branching out in a solo direction, composing and performing on 12-string acoustic guitar, resulting in his first solo CD Live Journal at the Mice Machine VIP Dance Floor. The music on this record, which was road tested on a September 2007 European tour with Swedish psych legends Trad Gras och Stenar, is rhythmic and lyrical, emphasizing the glowing overtones of his unusual tuning schemes and a relentless sense of repetition. Bits of organ and drum machine flesh out the sound of Forsyth's 12-string guitar, with the results sounding less like one the recent spate of guitar folk revivalists and more like Tom Verlaine playing elegiac acoustic versions of Glenn Branca pieces. Live Journal at the Mice Machine VIP Dance Floor is Forsyth's first solo recording to be released since his long out of print debut 1998 seven-inch on the micro-label Bottomfeeder, which was praised at the time by David Keenan in the Wire as "..the best solo guitar record since Donald Miller's A Little Treatise on Morals. Keep your eyes on this guy."

CIAN NUGENT - Childhood, Christian Lies & Slaughter: Solo Guitar (Incunabulum 08/BVHaast; Netherlands) Dublin-based guitarist Cian Nugent excells here with meditative guitar compositions. 19 year old Nugent's originals (plus a cover of Buell Kazee's Anthology of American Music staple "The Wagoner's Lad") are well served in this recording of Nugent 4th ever live concert. Ranging from the jug band bounce of "Baka Danse" to the eerie squeaks of "The Ceremony," Nugent's music boasts a rare breadth.
"Modern lute virtuoso, Jozef Van Wissem, runs this, the Incanabulum label, and continues to present some of the best acoustic guitar and lute music I've heard in recent times. Jozef just left us with this new acoustic classic by a young Irish guitarist named Cian Nugent. I find this disc to be consistently superb and often sublime. Cian writes contemplative, melodic and somewhat bluesy songs that always ring true. The one cover, "Baka Dance," has more of an older, folky theme, but all of the songs have an organic, human quality that feels just right. If this was released in the mid-70's, it would fit perfectly in the Takoma catalogue with John Fahey and Leo Kottke. Pretty great company for a young whippersnapper like Cian Nugent." - BLG

ERI YAMAMOTO TRIO - Redwoods (AUM 49; USA) Featuring Eri Yamamoto on piano & compositions, David Ambrosio on bass and Ikuo Takeuchi on drums. This is Eri's fifth disc with her own trio which has been together for more than a decade. Ms. Yamamoto has also worked with William Parker & Daniel Carter on a few other discs for the Thirsty Ear & Aum Fidelity labels. You can tell that this fine trio has been working together for a while since they do a strong group sound. "This is an Apple" opens with a bright, sunny, yet gospelish melody. I dig the way the bass and piano solos are an extension of that righteous melody. Eri seems to have a knack for writing winning songs that are a delight to hear again and again. I find myself humming along each time I play this disc. Wouldn't it be nice to hear this disc on that 24 hour (jive) jazz station on the left end of your dial instead of the all those lame singers that they force on us? You bet it would, but I wouldn't hold my breath. - BLG

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE & THE COSMIC INFERNO - Journey Into The Cosmic Inferno (Very Friendly 46; USA) The "Cosmic Inferno" manifestation of Acid Mothers Temple was initially formed in 2005, in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the planetary sonic event that is Acid Mothers Temple. As leader Kawabata Makoto explains: "Though we shall henceforth be Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno, the new group will also be known in short as Acid Mothers Temple and this will no doubt sow confusion in the minds of many. But the true manifestations of Acid Mothers Temple are many -- Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O., Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno, Acid Mothers Temple SWR. The future may see yet other groups bearing similar names. But each and all of them will be true manifestations of Acid Mothers Temple." This is the first studio recording since the addition of Pikachu, drummer and vocalist with Osaka grenade-girl duo, Afrirampo. A churning psychedelic mandala driven by Pikachu and Koji Shimura's (ex-Mainliner, ex-High Rise, ex-Nagisa Ni Te) explosive twin drum assault. The original super-heavy AMT & TCI groove is blended with Pikachu's wild and spontaneous power. Against a background of ultra-loud fuzz-wah guitar and swooping space sounds, Pikachu and Tabata's (Zeni Geva, ex-Boredoms) twin vocals beckon you on an endless journey through the cosmic inferno!

[JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER] JOMF - Freedomland (Very Friendly 45; USA) This is a collection of live-recorded improvised material by Portland, Oregon's Jackie-O Motherfucker. Compiled by founding member Tom Greenwood, this music captures the sound of a reconfigured Jackie-O during the late summer of 2006, with vocalist Eva Salens (Inca Ore), Tom Greenwood, Danny Sasaki, and Nick Bindeman. Their first stop was at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, where the group were scheduled for their first appearance supporting the Dirty Three. There they would begin -- unrehearsed in this formation, and in front of a large audience. The plans to perform material from their newest release Flags of the Sacred Harp were scrapped, and the band launched into a free-form set of improvised, trance-inducing, punk-inspired, psychedelic rock, which became the framework of the new music they would develop together over the next few years. Freedomland is the document of this trip through America. The record consists of location recordings, captured live, and mastered in the United Kingdom. The songs were created from the spirit of improvisation, and honed by performing nightly in dive bars, music halls, and art galleries across America. Salens' vocal delivery is raw and honest, the words flow from conversations, to streams-of-sub-conscious conjuring, and prayer. Guitars alternately soar into cloud-scapes, and battle like free-jazz saxophones, propelling the group into new terrain nightly, while the percussion of Danny Sasaki alternates between exploratory and dead-solid motoric. The collection was edited by Tom Greenwood, from dozens of live recordings, and captures a rare moment in the band's long and confusing history. As Greenwood himself describes, this is "truly the music of everyday life -- birthed each night in a new form, from musicians who put great faith in each other, under awesome strain at times, to project modern music, with soul."

VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA - My Gate's Open, Tremble By My Side: Expanded Edition (Lexicon Devil 12; Australia) Originally released on the Lexicon Devil label in 2004; a reissue of their obscenely rare 1999 LP on the Roaratorio label, with three bonus tracks. Vibracathedral Orchestra started in 1998 with the core 5-piece line-up of Neil Campbell, Bridget Hayden, Michael Flower, Adam Davenport and Julian Bradley. Between the five of them, a musical CV would read like a history of UK underground experimental music from the last decade or so, with members having been involved with the likes of Richard Youngs, Simon Wickham-Smith, Sunroof, Skullflower, and others. The sound and aesthetic of VO is based heavily on percussive, improvised, minimalist drones that occasionally bear heavy resemblance to everything from very early Velvet Underground (and proto-/post-Velvets projects with John Cale, Angus MacLise and La Monte Young) to Popol Vuh and Amon Duul to essential UK cult artists like Third Ear Band and AMM. With a massive array of percussive, stringed and toy instruments (bells, recorders, flutes, mandolins, violins, whistles, organs, etc.), the band soon began wowing people over with their limited self-released CD-Rs and occasional live shows. So, in the intervening years, with a smattering of "real" releases on VHF under their belt, and various limited vinyl releases elsewhere, comes this Lexicon Devil CD. My Gate's Open... was originally released on the Roaratorio label in 1999 in an addition of only 250 copies. Not only is the album considered by many fans to be their finest work, but the CD contains a bonus three tracks from the same recording session that until now have remained unissued. Musically, it all scorches in that patented Vibracathedral style: monolithic sheets of organic, repetitive drones that arch into quieter, more subtle territory, rhythms and grooves. This expanded edition is certainly an excellent place to start in exploring the world of Vibracathedral Orchestra.

PRURIENT - Cocaine Death (Hospital 232; USA) "Since the inception of both Prurient and the Hospital Productions label, cassette releases have been an essential format for the communication and participation in the industrial/noise culture. For Prurient, these cassette releases contain some of the most visceral and beloved works in the Prurient catalog. Cocaine Death is a compilation of three of Prurient's finest Hospital cassette releases as well as two unreleased tracks. The previously released material forms a triptych exploring the relationship between futile pleasure, substance and escape; escape being a myth. Cocaine Death (originally C-10 packaged in an envelope, limited to 46 copies) is perhaps the most sought after of the recent Prurient cassettes. The content is based on the glamour and destruction of toxic night life. The B-side features guest vocals from FFH and continues the themes with the addition of bondage. This material is a considered classic modern Prurient. Caribbean Overdose (originally a C-10, packaged in a standard shell package and limited to 100 copies) explores a different but strangely direct topic of the sexual reproductive life of plants. There is nothing common or typical about the sounds and direction of this material. Further examination into the life of scientific advancement and education. Tylenol Murders (originally a C-10, packaged in an oversized envelope and limited to 10 copies) takes the sounds and concepts of the aforementioned releases and expands the sounds to further limits of cracked static, strained vocals and strange melodic loops. This sought after limited material is seeing the light on this release to most Prurient listeners for the first time. This collection of cassette material is perhaps the biggest clue in the development of Prurient. This is where the edges blur and advancements reveal themselves. When Prurient material is released in the ether its shock-waves often take on a life of their own. For the first time, listeners of all levels can revel in their abstract longing and tension. For the diehards, two unreleased tracks of Prurient. There's a reason why these releases continue to live on long after the cassettes disappear. This CD shows the power and depth of Prurient in the cassette world. For those whose spindles still spin and those who have moved on, Cocaine Death shows revelation. Digipack CD with 16 page booklet."

JASON WILLETT - Sounds Of Megaphone Unlimited (MTG 78; USA) An amazing collection of tracks compiled of rare and out of print Megaphone records recordings by Baltimore's master of cacaophony, Jason Willett. Joining him on these tracks are names that will ring familiar with DMG regulars. The list of collaborators are as follows; Eye Yamatsuka, Michael Evans, Ruins (who at the time were Tatusya Yoshida &, Riuichi Masuda), Sato Harou , Dan Breen, Bob Wagner, Tom Boram, Benb Gallaher, Caroline Kraabel, John Dierker, Jad Fair, Glen Sorvisto, John Edwards, Martha Colburn, Andrew Barranca, Charlie Chadwick, and Jason's pet ducks! The name game alone will probably have most of you salivating. As our new cohort, Jacob Zero, comments, "Sounds like the craziest Jackie Chan movie ever." I couldn't have said it better myself! No-Wave punk infused exotica runs head first into dada sound poetry free jazz, kicking you in the chest and and flipping you onto your head. Jason is one of the first people to bring the Boredoms to the United States, runs the True Vine record store, and is known for his booty shaking DJ sets . That alone should garner interest into studying what the hell is going on with this cd. One day there will be a book written about Willett and the Megaphone empire and it will read like a choose your own adventure book. Viva la Baltimore! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

WAYNE HORVITZ & SWEETER THAN THE DAY [aka ZONY MASH ACOUSTIC] - Live At The Rendezvous December 2004 Seattle, WA [2 CD set] (Kufala 103; USA) Wayne Horvitz (piano), Timothy Young (guitars), Keith Lowe (acoustic bass), Andy Roth (drums) Sweeter Than the Day commemorated the one year anniversary of the very last Zony Mash [their electric unit] show by playing four nights in a row at the intimate Jewel Box Theatre in the Rendevous, one of Seattle's finer drinking establishments. All four nights were recorded and edited down to a 2 CD set consisting of the best takes. Mixed by Wayne Horvitz this release is a insight to the genius songwriting of Wayne Horvitz as he leads this amazing group of musicians. Highlights include an interesting take on the Grateful Dead's 'Casey Jones' which adapts to an acoustic jazz quartet quite nicely.

WAYNE HORVITZ & ZONY MASH - Farewell Shows: December 2003 Seattle, WA [2 CD set] (Kufala 61; USA) Wayne Horvitz (piano), Timothy Young (guitars), Keith Lowe (acoustic bass), Andy Roth (drums), Seattle, WA 12/12/2003. What started as almost an accident has now turned into Wayne Horvitz's longest-lasting ensemble. With six albums together as a unit and a couple more backing other musicians, these players have a feel for each other that borders on telepathic. But as great as their albums are, anyone who has ever seen Zony Mash perform live knows that the band really thrived in a live setting Wayne Horvitz has declared that this is the best recording that Zony Mash has ever done. We here at KUFALA have to agree. They drop the Funk. They drop the Jazz, and they even throw in a little Rock. When mashed together this represents Zony Mash at their best. This 2 CD set contains over 158 minutes of wall to wall musical greatness. As this recording represents the best moments of their final 2 shows ever it is a must have for any Zony Mash or Wayne Horvitz fan.

WAYNE HORVITZ & ZONY MASH - Cold Spell (KnitWorks 201; USA) Zony Mash is Naked City alum Wayne Horvitz's newest project. Abandoning his synth for the organic sounds of a Hammond Organ, this Seattle band grooves and rocks with an avant edge. Zony Mash is named after an obscure Meters song, and that funky vibe is what this band is all about. This music moves the mind as well as the behind. Ten years ago Wayne Horvitz was the first artist to play at the Knitting Factory, and this is his first appearance on a KFW release. It has been too long. Having recorded for Nonesuch, Tim Kerr, Avant, and scores of smaller labels, Horvitz released three of his own albums on Nonesuch, producing and playing with Robin Holcomb, Bill Frisell, Fontella Bass, and countless others. Bassist from another planet Fred Chalenor was a founding member of The Tone Dogs (w/ Amy Denio). He is in Caveman Shoestore, Pigpen, the Boodlers with Elliott Sharp, and has worked with Soundgarden's Matt Cameron. Guitarist Tim Young plays with the Skallywags and Devilhead (Loosegroove Records). Andy Roth is the drummer of choice for the Seattle new music scene, having played with Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb, Jay Clayton, and the Seattle reggae band The Groove.

WAYNE HORVITZ & ZONY MASH - Upper Egypt (KnitWorks 259; USA) Featuring Wayne on hammond B-3 organ, wurlitzer el. piano & dx-7 or roland synth, Timothy Young on guitars, (new man) Keith Lowe on basses & Andy Roth on drums. This is the third fonky groove affair from Zony Mash and bless the lord, they're at it again! Why is it that my pals Medeski, Martin & Wood draw such big (and smelly) crowds and Zony Mash rarely get their due?!!? What - Zony Mash ain't greasy enough for ya? It just don't seem fair. They pick a cosmic Pharoah Sanders tune from the late 60's for their opener and do it just right - feeling wise. Wayne writes such great smokey organ groove tunes and when they turn up the heat a bit - watch out!! Tim Young let loose a fat slow burn guitar solo to please the gods or at least the critics. There is something so soothing and hip about that hammond b-3 tone, it just makes you wanna turn down the lights and either slow dance or sit nodding & grinning with your eyes closed. Zony Mash have written all the other tunes here, except for one other cover by (Mr. Mellow) Bill Frisell. Wayne plays a few select synth solos that are just too much! Perhaps this music is bit too tasteful or mature for the masses!?! I've always had a soft spot for Booker T. & MG's, the Meters, Little Feat - smart soulful bands with great guitar & organ. And that's where this music seems to take off from. Loren Mazzacane says that you can tell that the lead guitarist is coming out of early Clapton on "Goes Round and Round", certainly a great compliment. In my book, Zony Mash can do wrong and this new one is happening once again, so please give them a chance to warm your funky soul! - BLG

Club d'Elf attracts Downtowners like Marc Ribot, Mat Maneri, John Medeski, Dave Tronzo, David "Fuze" Fiuczynski .. !
Club d'Elf coalesced in public for the first time in early 1998 when bassist/composer Mike Rivard (a/k/a Micro Vard) was given the opportunity to host an every-other Thursday night at Cambridge's ultra-hip Lizard Lounge. Boston/Cambridge lacked the kind of improv scene that embraced jazz, dub, electronica, rock and world music such as existed in NYC at venues like Tonic (where the band found its Manhattan home). An in-demand session and live bassist with such local and national acts as Morphine, The Story, Jon Brion, Paula Cole, Aimee Mann and Guster, Rivard had a long list of friends and contacts to call upon to guest with the band, including John Medeski, Marc Ribot, Mat Maneri, DJ Logic, Joe Maneri, Dave Tronzo Kenwood Dennard, David Bowie guitarists Reeves Gabrels and Gerry Leonard, Hassan Hakmoun and many others. Inspired by Hakmoun, Rivard began to play the sintir (also called guembri or hejhouj) and worked it into the band's repertoire.
The range of musical styles the band incorporates is reflected in its wildly diverse audience: DJ-oriented club kids and ravers; notebook-scribbling, boho-intellectuals; tie-dyed Phish fans; Berklee students attracted to the high level of musicianship; and Moroccan Berbers. In other words, sensation seekers. For Club d'Elf "trance" is not just an electronica genre but also includes the Gnawa music of Morocco, extended James Brown tracks like "I Got To Move", and Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying", amongst other points of reference. It's the intersection between Ali Farka Toure and The Talking Heads; between Fela Kuti and Nustrat Fateh Ali Khan, and it is this nexus which the band is interested in exploring. Ahead of the curve in predicting the trend of mash-ups, d'Elf navigated a (fictional) musical terrain where Squarepusher accompanied (Moroccan band) Nass El Ghiwane; where Music For 18 Musicians collided with John Cage's Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano (drums c/o DJ Shadow); and On The Corner was remixed by Brian Eno with Mississippi John Hurt sitting in.
By the time the band released its first CD, 2000's As Above: Live at the Lizard Lounge, the group had shifted to an even greater emphasis on Moroccan music, heralded by the addition of Casablanca-born/NYC-dwelling Brahim Fribgane on oud, vocals and all manner of percussion instruments. Beginning in 2004 six double-CDs of live shows from the period of 2000 to 2004 were released on Kufala:

CLUB D'ELF [MIKE RIVARD] With DAVE TRONZO/JOHN MEDESKI et al - Perhapsody: Live At The Lizard Lounge 10/12/2006 [2 CD set] (Kufala 185; USA) When Club d'Elf released its first studio CD, 'Now I Understand', of its nine years of existence, it was only fitting that the band should hold its official release party at the Lizard Lounge, where it had been playing most every other Thursday since '98. For this special evening leader Mike Rivard gathered together a heavyweight ensemble of MMW keyboardist John Medeski, the dual guitars of Dave Tronzo (Daniel Lanois/Sex Mob) and Duke Levine (Shawn Colvin/Jonatha Brooke), Mister Rourke (Soulive) on turntables and samples, and original d'Elf drummer Erik Kerr. Joining this stellar cast (with Rivard on electric and acoustic basses and the Moroccan sintir) were horn players Tom Hall, Tom Halter (Either/Orchestra) and Sam Kininger (Soulive). Fortunately the music that evening was recorded, captured in all of it's detail on multi-track. The result is the live CD that sounds like a studio CD: Perhapsody, the band's seventh release on LA based Kufala. The album captures the intense energy that d'Elf bring to their live shows, which have become the stuff of legend, featuring telepathic improvisations adorning relentless grooves, played by musicians at the top of their craft.

Remember 'Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey' from their days at the Knitting Factory? Kufala Records picked up the ball when the Knit label went under..
JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY - Slow Breath, Silent Mind (Kufala 59; USA) The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is a fascinating group. From Tulsa, Oklahoma, Brian Haas (Fender Rhodes, melodica and acoustic piano), Jason Smart (drums) and Reed Mathis (bass) pull influences from nearly every genre of music, as diverse as John Coltrane, and Jimi Hendrix, to Thelonious Monk and KRS-ONE. They've been together since 1994 and perform over 200 live appearances per year - this recording is from their fall 2003 tour.
The trio explores seven jazz standards by the likes of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard, and Wayne Shorter, but they are not exactly excessively reverent. In fact, in many cases they deconstruct the piece altogether, particularly "Up Jumped Spring," keeping the melody but dropping everything else. "In a Sentimental Mood" has Reed Mathis in the lead on his octave-induced acoustic bass guitar, making colorful sounds. Monk's "Off Minor" is quite eccentric while "Central Park West" is taken slow and almost out-of-tempo. The key to this group is the close interplay between the three musicians, and their willingness to take the music outside whenever inspiration strikes. This is a consistently unpredictable CD (one of the finest of 2003) and one that grows in interest with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

JACOB FRED JAZZ ODYSSEY - Symbiosis Osmosis (Kufala 62; USA) a seamless string of free-improvisations, done in the moment without preconception, in a variety of settings.
Captured live in concert in the early morning hours, the start of the album finds the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey closing out the High Sierra Music Festival, in a hall packed with thousands of mesmerized festival goers. By the end of the album we find them doing the same thing as the sun rises at the close of the New Orleans Jazz Festival (complete with an all-star horn section!), this time captured in an intimite room filled with music-hungrey up-all-nighters egging them on. Aside from a brief theme thrown in from the Jacob Fred composition 'Son of Jah', the entire album is played in the trio's own unique signature of free-improvisation as a unit, allowing faith in the passing moment to shape each piece. It makes for some amazing listening discoveries, as you hear wave after wave of discovery washing over these inspired players.
special guests: saxophonists Skerik, Mark Southerland, Brad Houser, and Frank Catalano

HILDE MARIE KJERSEM - A Killer For That Ache (Rune Grammofon 2077; EEC) This is the first solo release for Norway's singer/songwriter Hilde Marie Kjersem. Kjersem was born and brought up in the northwest coastal town of Alesund, with seven brothers and sisters and a father with a passion for science fiction and Kenny Rogers. Like many of her young contemporaries in Norway, she studied at the Music Conservatory. She has released two albums, Red Shoes Diary (2004) with her now-disbanded TUB Quartet and Twelve O'Clock Tales (2005), a duo album of standards with jazz guitarist Jon Eberson. The last couple of years, she has worked on A Killer For That Ache, the first proper album under her own name. Far from being a jazz album or your typical melancholy Nordic singer-songwriter album, Kjersem names some of her inspirations to be David Lynch, Roger Rabbit, Finn Graff (legendary Norwegian newspaper illustrator), Danny Elfman, Robert Wyatt, Jose Saramago, Kate Bush and Tim Burton. With her present band, including Shining main-man Jorgen Munkeby, she has delivered some stunning performances that have been extremely well-received in the Norwegian press. A Killer For That Ache can be called a concept album of sorts, in the way that Kjersem sets out to critique the media by stepping into various disguises and characters using comments, facts, lies, repetitions, assumptions, exaggerations, humor, irony and absurd observations on things that might have happened, things that never happened and things that never will. Not surprisingly, the result is an eclectic selection of songs that are completely indescribable. Let us just say it is pop music with many twists, making it a dramatic, beautiful, mysterious, seductive, intricate, fascinating and unique musical ride. Hilde Marie Kjersem (vocals, keyboards, autoharp), Jorgen Munkeby (saxophones, clarinets, flute, guitar, vocals), Torbjorn Folke Zetterberg (bass, guitars, banjo, Moog, Rhodes, vocals), Sjur Miljeteig (trumpet, vocals), Peder Kjellsby (drums, percussion, piano).

Last year when we featured a handful of discs from the Creative Sources label, the label sent us some 70+ promos to check out. Both Chuck & I have gone through and listened to many of these and provided you all with some half dozen reviews of the better discs.
Our guest reviewer, Michael Parker, has recently taken up the task and checked every one of these discs out and will pick out another half dozen of his favorite picks. In the meantime, here's a fine disc from a new local trumpeter...
JACOB WICK/ANDREW GREENWALD - 37:55 (Creative Sources 133; EEC) Featuring Jacob Wick on trumpet and Andrew Greenwald on percussion. I don't know Jacob Wick very well except that he is friends with our new employee Joe Merolla and both young men work down the block at Think Coffee. This disc begins with a long unnamed piece that features a couple of layers of extraordinary twisted trumpet weirdness with sizzling percussion underneath. If I didn't know better I would think that this was one those heavy cats like Nate Wooley or Axel Dorner. The percussion swirls like the wind rustling some tree branches and Jacob excells at that tea kettle-like steam sound or a balloon letting out air. It is often difficult to tell what instruments these cats are playing since we rarely hear any normal trumpet or percussion sounds. Who is playing which sound? It doesn't really matter if the results are this fascinating. I dig the way this is recorded, cleanly, with extreme attention to detail. Is someone bowing a cymbal? Is that the radiator hissing? Just what is going here my neighbors might be saying. Again, it doesn't really matter when the sounds are this enchanting. - BLG

TOBIAS RUGER QUARTETT - Interlude (Zama 02; Germany) With his fully-acoustic quartet, Frankfurt's Tobias Ruger explores the musical possibilities of the most classic of jazz outfits. Traditional in set-up and modern in musical language, spontaneous expression and improvisation blends into precisely-arranged compositional ideas. Tobias Ruger has taken on three outstanding musicians for this project: Daniel Stelter, guitar, is neither a jazz, nor pop, nor classical guitarist, although his playing is borne out of all these styles without being eclectic. His playing is exceptionally gentle both in sound and harmony and thus provides a perfect link between melody and rhythm. Hanns Hohn, bass, is a member of numerous jazz projects, including those of German jazz masters Oli Bott and Torsten de Winkel. His tone is voluptuous and smooth. Furthermore, his uncannily secure intonation allows him to apply his bass frequently for melodic purposes. Kay Lubke, drums, has recorded with Efrat Alony and Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky. He is an exceptional drummer in the sense that he makes the very most of the whole range of sounds the drum-set has to offer. According to Ruger himself, "Adjusting my compositions to their musicianship became a responsibility, a responsibility to translate the spectrum that exists between solo performance and accompaniment, between formal composition and uninhibited improvisation. In 'Zeitloch' (Timewarp) or 'Die Stimme der Vernunft' (The Voice of Reason), Hanns casts new light on the motives introduced by the saxophone in wide solo passages, whereas the guitar and double bass almost merge into one in 'Im Zimmer der Zauberin' (In the Room of the Sorceress). In 'Der Besuch der alten Dame' (The Visit of the Old Lady), Kay explores the melodic potential of the drum set, accompanied by guitar and bass, while I use some so-called new playing techniques such as multiphonics and circular breathing on the sax." These special compositions were recorded in an 18-hour studio session, and are the result of careful interaction between four personalities and their ideas.

RYOJI IKEDA - Matrix [2 CD set] (Touch 44; UK) Touch reissues Japanese electronic composer Ryoji Ikeda's 2001 release, Matrix, without postcards. Matrix is the final element in a trilogy of CDs that began with +/- in 1996. When it was first released, +/- came like a bolt out of the white. Nobody had used digital recording processes to produce sound as pure, as intense and as exhilarating. Since releasing 0 Degrees in 1998, Ryoji Ikeda has progressively refined and enhanced the distinctive sonic fields and microsounds that have strongly influenced post-digital composition, resisting the transitory cycle suggested by the term "glitches," creating compositions that deeply probe our relationships to time and space, sound and light. That's the only forewarning of what awaits you on putting the first CD into your player. The layers of sound that make up Matrix transform both the listener and the listening environment into another dimension. The dimensions change as you move about the space, or simply turn your head around the sound like surveying the angles of a building. Matrix has much in common with the work of La Monte Young, Tony Conrad, and Alvin Lucier, but, poised closer to the imminent and auto-interactive virtual world we are promised, Ryoji Ikeda's new work pushes the parameters of the drone to ask timely questions concerning our relationship to our own perceptions, and to our existing living spaces. Double CD in gatefold wallet.

RYOJI IKEDA - See You At Regis Debray [sndtck; 2 CD set] (Syntax 20751; EEC) Originally released in 2005, Process is an original soundtrack recording by John Cale and marks the beginning of his creative relationship with avant-garde filmmaker CS Leigh. The film, featuring Beatrice Dalle and Guillaume Depardieu, was described by Variety as being "one of the most adventurous works" screened at 2004's Berlinale," with Leigh displaying "a take-no-prisoners arthouse rigor." With Cale being "no stranger to taking music in experimental directions" (Rolling Stone), the coming together of director and composer was a natural and inspired union. Leigh explains: "When I was working on Process in the earliest stages I knew I wanted to work with Cale. He has made groundbreaking contributions to difficult cinema and understands the architecture of film sound better than anyone I know. Cale gives you more than music. He gives you a sound landscape that permeates every frame and resounds beyond the borders." Cale's work for Process is a haunting, discordant collection of mostly solo piano pieces, described by the Edinburgh International Film Festival catalog as being a "menacing and incendiary score." Cale has created a sound that perfectly compliments the radical approach of CS Leigh, of whom Le Figaro writes: "His aesthetic sense is taken to extremes. His incisive images disturb, shock. You cannot stay indifferent watching Process." Continuing in this vein, the soundtrack is at once ominous, provocative yet poignant.

PHILIP GLASS - Music In Twelve Parts [4 CD set] (Orange Mountain 49; USA) "Philip Glass' Music In Twelve Parts may be the most seminal work of the minimalist movement. The entire four-hour piece has come to be viewed as a summation of all of Glass' achievements of the period and came to inform many of the composer's later works. A massive piece written for the composer's own group of musicians, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Music In Twelve Parts was recorded by the group in Rovereto, Italy in 2006, more than 30 years after the premiere at New York City's Town Hall. For the first time, this four disc boxed set contains a recording of the entire work unabridged performed by the Philip Glass Ensemble with the composer on keyboards."

PHILIP GLASS - Archive Vol 4: Neverwas [sndtck] (Orange Mountain 52; USA) "Philip Glass' score to the film Neverwas is the fourth release from the Philip Glass Recording Archive. Neverwas, a film starring Ian McKellen, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Nolte, Brittany Murphy, Jessica Lange and William Hurt, is a fantasy-mystery with a bold, playful and fantastical score by Philip Glass. The film never received wide distribution and was largely forgotten. The 53-minute film score (composed the same year the composer's celebrated music for The Hours) possesses some of Glass' most accessible and heartfelt music."

THE SURREALISTS: LE GROUPE SURREALISTE REVOLUTIONNAIRE DOTREMONT ET BROODTHAERS [V.A.] - Volume 3: Le Groupe Surrealiste Revolutionnaire Dotremont et Broodthaers (Sub Rosa 269; Belgium) This third volume aural document is devoted to the evolution of Belgian surrealist groups spanning the years 1939-1978, following in the surrealist footsteps that Dada, Pansaers et Correspondance Volume 1 (1917-1926) and Magritte, Le Groupe Surrealiste de Bruxelles, Rupture Volume 2 (1926-1938) established. This third volume gathers rare archival recordings and excerpts from The Groupe Surrealiste du Hainaut, 1939 (with Achille Chavee, Fernand Dumont, Pol Bury, Andre Simon, Marcel Lefrancq), The Groupe Surrealisme Revolutionnaire, 1948 (with Christian Dotremont, Marcel Broodthaers, Paul Colinet, Achille Chavee), the Revues : Temps Meles, 1952 (with Andre Blavier), Phantomas 1953 (with Marcel Havrenne, Theodore Koenig, Marcel Piqueray), Les Levres Nues, 1954 (with Marcel Marien), Daily Bul 1957 (with Andre Balthazar, Pol Bury, Marcel Havrenne, Paul Colinet, Marcel Piqueray), and the two outsiders: Marcel Broodthaers and Jean-Pierre Verheggen. The Groupe Surrealiste du Hainaut, first incepted in 1934, was a slow blinding light in Belgium's culture of thought. Seen from the industrial landscapes, and so close to the French borders, it was more accepting of French theories than the surrealists in Brussels. These Walloon Surrealists remained rather faithful to the methods preached by Breton (automatic writing, against which Nouge became strongly opposed to early on). Hennuyer, Magritte, Scutenaire, and Souris all had a similar perspective, but eventually moved to Brussels where that identity clearly demarcated itself in a nationalist move towards establishing the differences in Belgian tradition and identity. This final volume of this compilation series, and the project as a whole, is an urgent attempt to document an important aspect of surrealism that most surely would have disappeared into dusty archives, if not released to the world.

ANDREY TARKOVSKY SOUNDTRACKS: EDWARD ARTEMYEV - Tarkovsky Vol 4: Zerkalo/Stalker [sndtck s] (Toei 2004; Japan) Soundtracks by Edward Artemyev. Zerkalo is from 1974 and Stalker is from 1979. "Artemyev's compositional ability is closer inspected here, in a much more varied assortment of musical cues than previous volumes. The Zeralko pieces are an eclectic assortment of low drones, ensemble systems-chaos, Handel influenced string interludes, kit-based space ritual chants, dawn-of-time instrument discovery, and one ethically challenging mariachi blast. But the real goods are delivered via the second (Stalker) half of the CD; several mellotron-bedded pieces involving SERIOUSLY echoplexed-out phase-synced lute/flute meditations relaying the order of the cosmos to each other over two channels, with underlaying sub-aquatic ambience and resonant synth-footing. Excellent stuff, a must-hear. Certainly the place to start with this somewhat daunting series. 21 tracks." -- Hrvatski

ANDREY TARKOVSKY SOUNDTRACKS: EDWARD ARTEMYEV & VYACHESLAV OVCHINNIKOV - Tarkovsky Vol 3: Solaris [sndtck] (Toei 2003; Japan) The 1972 SF masterpiece based on the Stanislaw Lem book. Strange, arcane, slow and beautiful, one of the quintessential "space" movies of the 70s and about as fine a document in the world of visual arts as you could ask for. Soundtrack composed by Edward Artemyev & Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov (uncredited). "Excellent long-reverb location-sound-collection not far from the Organum school of non-movement bliss. Mysterious. Comes as close to recreating in sound the whole 'space' experience as thought possible. Serious atmospherics (key word: dense). Recurring pipe organ theme. Dripping. Think of the best of the Mainstream-label catalogue.17 tracks." --Hrvatski

ANDREY TARKOVSKY SOUNDTRACKS: VYACHESLAV OVCHINNIKOV - Tarkovsky Vol 2: Andrey Rublyov [sndtck] (Toei 2002; Japan) "A grimly realistic portrayal of a 15-th century Russian Monk which was made in 1966 but was banned in Russia until 1971."-- Ephraim Katz. Soundtrack by Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov. "Dark, atonal passages of repeating figures and isolated percussive elements. Some completely unrecognizable instruments, extended performance techniques reminiscent of Lachenmann's string pieces and Penderecki's choral work. Fairly jostling washes of sound. Ensemble playing mixed with field recordings of post-war machinery and plenty of tape hiss (or is it rain...), for that chain-dragging on the ground effect. Startlingly AMM-like in places. Serious rising sounds. 15 tracks." -- Hrvatski

Produced by Yes and ELP engineer Eddie Offord, the album features wonderful material such as 'Got No Time' and 'Mister Jesus.' LESLIE WEST/JACK BRUCE/CORKY LAING - Live 'n' Kickin' (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2072; UK) "Esoteric Recordings are proud to release this classic rock album from 1974, the only live album by the amazing power trio, West Bruce & Laing. Forming in 1972 the band brought together Cream bassist, vocalist and writer Jack Bruce with Leslie West and Corky Laing from the American band Mountain. Together WBL recorded three albums, all of which demonstrated the group's power and dexterity. Following the release of their debut, Why Doncha? for CBS records in Europe, the band moved to RSO Records. This powerful live album captures WBL at their peak and includes stunning versions of 'Play With Fire,' Cream's 'Politician' and 'Powerhouse Sod.' Alas, the band only lasted some eighteen months before breaking apart. This Esoteric release, remastered from the original tapes, follows on the heels of the label's critically acclaimed 6 CD set Jack Bruce retrospective Can You Follow? and is indeed a welcome one."

Following the release of their debut, Why Doncha? for CBS records in Europe, the band moved to RSO Records to record this, their last studio album which featured such classics as 'Scotch Krotch.' Alas, the band only lasted some eighteen months before breaking apart. This Esoteric release, remastered from the original tapes, follows on the heels of the label's critically acclaimed 6 CD set Jack Bruce retrospective Can You Follow? and is indeed a welcome one for all fans of classic rock.

JACK BRUCE AND FRIENDS: BILLY COBHAM/CLEM CLEMPSON/DAVID SANCIOUS - I've Always Wanted To Do This (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2073; UK) "Esoteric Recordings are proud to release this classic Jack Bruce album from 1980, the result of a unique collaboration between Bruce and musicians Billy Cobham, Clem Clempson and David Sancious. A wonderful album of diversity, it saw Jack truly on form with such wonderful songs as 'Hit & Run,' 'Livin' Without Ja,' 'Dancing on Air' and 'Bird Alone,' all written with long time collaborator Pete Brown. An overlooked gem from Jack Bruce's catalogue, the album receives an official UK CD release for the first time. This Esoteric release, remastered from the original tapes, follows on the heels of the label's critically acclaimed 6 CD set Jack Bruce retrospective Can You Follow? and is indeed a welcome one."

JACK BRUCE - Can You Follow: 65th Birthday Retrospective 1962-2003 [6 CD Box Set] (Cherry Red/Esoteric BOX1; UK) A 6CD deluxe anthology featuring selections from Jack's work with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, the Graham Bond Quartet, Duffy Power, The Graham Bond Organisation, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Manfred Mann, Cream, Tony Williams' Lifetime, West, Bruce & Laing, Frank Zappa, Rocket 88, Robin Trower, BBM along with selections from his fifteen solo albums. Includes a lavishly illustrated 68 page book documenting Jack's career with his own exclusive personal comments and previously unseen photographs. A 110 track selection, including 29 never before released on CD in the UK.
Jack Bruce is one of the greatest popular musicians Britain has ever produced. A supremely talented instrumentalist and vocalist, eminently respected by his peers, Jack's pioneering bass playing style has influenced successive generations of bassists, including such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Jaco Pastorius and Sting, alongside more contemporary musicians such as Flea of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. He is also the possessor of one of the most powerful voices in modern music and a composer of some of the most original and influential music of the past forty years. This lavish and ambitious set gathers together material drawn from all aspects of Jack's career, beginning in 1962 with the earliest released recording of Jack performing as a member of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and continuing with recordings made with the Graham Bond Organisation (comprising Jack, Graham Bond, Ginger Baker and Dick Heckstall-Smith), John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Manfred Mann and then on to Cream (the band which brought Jack Bruce along with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker to world wide prominence), selling over 33 million albums in the process.
As one of popular music's most respected innovators, Jack Bruce is in a class of his own. "Can You Follow?" celebrates his enduring talent and musical legacy.

THE HI-FI'S - Snakes And Hi-Fis (Wooden Hill 22; UK) "One of the finest examples of the beat-bands-go-bonkers syndrome, Snakes and Hi-Fis was released in Germany in mid-1967 by exiled British group The Hi-Fi's. Long established as an expensive, highly sought-after rarity on the worldwide beat/psych collectors market, this first-ever, band-authorized reissue is bolstered by no less than fourteen bonus tracks (many previously unreleased) from the same time frame. With extensive liner notes and some fabulous previously unpublished photos, this is the definitive release of a wonderful album."
