ANDREW D'ANGELO HAS BRAIN TUMOR
"On Friday, January 25, 2008 world-renowned saxophonist/composer Andrew D'Angelo suffered a major seizure while driving in Brooklyn, NY. Tests in the hospital revealed a large tumor in his brain. Andrew will undergo brain surgery at some point in the next few weeks. At this time, it is believed that the tumor is not cancerous, but this will not be confirmed until a biopsy is performed.
Like many Americans, Andrew has no health insurance. A fund has been established to help with the costs of his surgery and recovery.
Donations can be sent via PayPal at donate@andrewdangelo.com. We deeply appreciate any efforts that can be made to spread the word about Andrew's situation."

THOMAS CHAPIN CELEBRATIONS!
LIFT OFF! REMEMBERING THOMAS CHAPIN..
Ten years ago this week, February 13th, 1998, the amazing saxist/flutist/composer Thomas Chapin passed away. It doesn't seem so far away, as I remember that day so clearly. I recall former DMG employee, Emperor Mike & myself, being devastated at having to tell everyone who received our newsletter about the sad news. Thomas Chapin was only 40 years when he left us, but he certainly left his mark on the many who heard him live and/or listened to his records. I was proud to be Thomas' friend and honored to have helped his career. Thomas was one of the greatest sax players ever, an amazing flutist, an inspired composer and an incredibly sweet person. We still miss him dearly, but this week we celebrate his life and his music with two concerts. I helped organize these concerts with Terri Chapin (Thomas' wife) and Charles Blass. Thanks to them, the musicians, poets, speakers and other helpers, we get another chance to hear Thomas Chapin's special spirit/music. Please join us. - Bruce Lee Gallanter

MAYBE MONDAY [FRED FRITH/MIYA MASAOKA/LARRY OCHS] + CARLA KIHLSTEDT/IKUE MORI/ZEENA PARKINS/GERRY HEMINGWAY - Unsquare (Intakt 132; Switzerland) Maybe Monday - Fred Frith, Miya Masaoka and Larry Ochs - first unveiled its collaboration in 1997, on-stage at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. In retrospect, this meeting seems almost inevitable: the three members of the group had been crossing paths for years: Ochs with both Frith and Masaoka through numerous Rova projects, and Frith with Masaoka on a tour of Europe with Tom Cora. Now for their third album - recorded November 2006 at the East Side Sound Studio in New York - Maybe Monday have invited four guests: Gerry Hemingway, Carla Kihlstedt, Ikue Mori, and Zeena Parkins. The delicate mesh of electric and acoustic, ethnic and urban, traditional and experimental, sets up a mesmerizing dynamic in the music.

DOPPELMOPPEL [CONRAD [KONRAD] BAUER/HELMUT 'JOE' SACHSE/UWE KROPINSKI/JOHANNES BAUER] - Outside This Area (Intakt 136; Switzerland) Music is an art of the moment, improvised music in particular, nonetheless it can make history as is the case with Doppelmoppel. The first record of this highly unusual quartet consisting of two guitars and two trombones is 25 years old. Who would have thought, upon its release in 1982, that this line-up would last for so long? That the ad hoc band, that gets together whenever it feels like it, would even outlive the state from which it originated.
This third CD of Doppelmoppel was recorded 2007 in the East-Berlin Sound Studio of the German Filmorchester Babelberg: Outside This Area with eleven marvelous walks outdoors. With Doppelmoppel so much has happened and continues to happen against all expectations that the listener can rely only on the music as dependable factor. And how nice that is! When Art transcends the Moment, reminding the future of its existence, beyond any questions of system or territory, Now just as Then.
I caught the incredible DoppelMoppel quartet at Victo many years back and remember that their set was amazing. It was the first time I heard from all four of these great musicians and have since become a great fan of all four players. Trombone fans, both Bauer brothers are phenomenal and quite different in their approach. Guitar fans, both Joe Sachse on electric guitar and Uwe Kropinski on acoustic guitar are also incredible and very different. This is only their third release in 25 years and it has been eagerly awaited.

JURG WICKIHALDER/CHRIS WIESENDANGER - A Feeling For Someone (Intakt 134; Switzerland) Jurg Wickihalder Soprano Saxophone, Chris Wiesendanger Piano. Jurg Wickihalder presents with A Feeling for Someone his first CD with his own music: a duo with pianist Chris Wiesendanger. The eight compositions on this CD can be understood as a movie, as the soundtrack of important encounters and experiences in the life of the 34-year-old soprano saxophonist. The results are special songs, simple, beautiful things, very melodic.
When he left the studio, he was aware that the pieces generally had to do with a particular musician who had at some point been important to him. Ridge Dancers for Ornette Coleman - nothing harmolodic, but an image that fits. Autumn Child has to do with Miles Davis, The Coach with Duke Ellington, The Sun with Charlie Parker, Apology with Stan Getz, The Last Breath with Steve Lacy and Caring with Coltrane. The point is not the compositional details, but rather the associations: something felt, intuitive, even intimate.
Jurg Wickihalder is one of the most interesting young musican of the Zurich jazz scene. He plays with Irene Schweizer. He is a member of the Orchestra Omri Ziegele Billiger Bauer and he leads his own Quartet.

FREE FORM FUNKY FREQS [VERNON REID/JAMAALADEEN TACUMA/G CALVIN WESTON] - Urban Mythology Volume 1 (Blue Series/Thirsty Ear 57182; USA) Your patience will be tested. You heard me: the ability to sit through the entire 58 minutes of Urban Mythology: Volume One at high volume is an act of perseverance. The power trio known as Free Form Funky Freqs brings on the noise with such intensity that it is best served in small bites (but at high volume, of course.)
FFFF- the group better known in its individual identities as guitarist Vernon Reid, bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and drummer G. Calvin Weston - have played this music in other variations. Reid might be most famous as a member of Living Colour, but he was a recognized guitar master before he was a rock star, playing with Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society. Lately, he has been the other half of Yohimbe Brothers with DJ Logic, as well as the guitar of choice in James Blood Ulmer's rootsy blues recordings. Likewise, Weston has recorded with a range of prominent crossover artists, including Ulmer, John Lurie's Lounge Lizards and Ornette Coleman's Prime Time Bands; in Coleman's group he shared the stage with Jamaaladeen Tacuma. At one point the Philadelphia bassist Tacuma branched off into his own form of funky dance music, but lately has stuck close to funk and jazz.
Loaded with fiery rock, free-form jazz and funk, the disc opens with a twelve-minute jam, "A Tale Of Two BridgesÉ" certainly a reference to the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The song morphs from monster chords into guitar synth rock and pure energy funk, daring you to spin the second track. The heavy bass laid by Tacuma on "Don Cheadle" sets up the funk for Reid's solo flight. Like much of this record, the drumming is fiercely geared towards the rock genre, but with enough changes and flavor to please a jazz audience. The energy continues on the fast-then-faster "Over And Under," the disco-driven "Nappy Hour," the Southern rock-influenced "Chump Champ Chunk," and the video game soundtrack of "Street Corner Prophecy."

MARK HELIAS' OPEN LOOSE - Strange Unison (Radio Legs 013; USA) Featuring Tony Malaby on tenor sax, Mark Helias on acoustic bass & compositions and Tom Rainey on drums. This is the fifth disc from Mark Helias' consistently great Open Loose trio. I am just as anxious as you should be. Review next week, after I've heard it a few dozen times.

SWAMI LATEPLATE [BOBBY PREVITE/JAMIE SAFT] - Doom Jazz: Plays Music From The Imaginary Futurist Drama (Veal 01; USA) Swami LatePlate features Bongo Monopoly (a/k/a Bobby Previte, drums) and Key Command (Jamie Saft, piano, bass and occasional keyboards). This much anticipated disc from Jamie Saft's new label includes an odd, surreal comic book/film noir like booklet. It is about two men walking on the streets of a deserted city who wear some oppressive collars with blinking light numbers. The music itself also has that heavily suspense-laden vibe. Minimal, yet filled with doom and an eerie feeling that something terrible is about to happen. On "Malignant Cloud," Bobby plays just a cymbal and his snare while Jamie plays just a handful of spacious chords on his piano and a few well-selected notes on his electric bass. Nothing else is needed, since we can feel a story unfolding with just those few notes. I love the way this is recorded, a perfect balance and spaciousness between each instrument and sound. - BLG

WHOOPIE-PIE [BILL McHENRY/JAMIE SAFT/MIKE PRIDE] - Sweet (Veal 02; USA) The ridiculously named Whoopie-Pie features straight-ahead jazz star, Bill McHenry on tenor sax, Tzadik recording artist, engineer & keyboard wiz Jamie Saft and the ubiquitous punk/improv drummer Mike Pride. An eclectic trio, so say the least. The opening track, "Hake" is 41 minutes long and sounds like Painkiller!?! Thick, scary fuzz-bass, chains-for-percussion & heavy drums with tense tenor sax eruptions. You wouldn't think that Fresh Sounds tenor man, Bill McHenry, would be the right choice for this crazed, punk/jazz endeavor, but he does fit well blasting over Jamie's thick, demented distorto bass eruptions. This is one of those recordings that sounds much better loud, in-your-face and blasting out of big speakers. Is that Bill screaming through his sax? Holy sh*t, it is! Mike Pride, who has toured with that ancient hardcore punk band MDC (Millions of Dead Corpses), sounds most impressive here on powerhouse drums. Yes, the same Mike Pride I heard playing mostly haunting (quiet) cymbals with lower-case sax grand-daddy Jack Wright last month (Jan. '08). Jamie Saft's monstrous electric bass is also immense and well-recorded. Sounds like he could give Laswell a run for his money in the daredevil Painkiller category. This disc is frighteningly good! - BLG

KALI Z. FASTEAU / KIDD JORDAN / NEWMAN TAYLOR BAKER - Live at the Kerava Jazz Festival: Finland (Flying Note 9012; USA) Featuring Kali Z. Fasteau on soprano sax, piano, flute, mizmar, nai, cello, synth, violin, drums & voice, "Kidd" Jordan on tenor sax and Newman Taylor Baker on drum set & talking drum. You just got to love the unstoppable, spiritual sorceress, Kali Fasteau, as she continues to ride those cosmic waves. This is Kali's 15th disc as a leader and she and her trusty trio with the hard-blowing Kidd Jordan (New Orleans' finest) and one of downtown's best drummers, Newman T. Baker. Kali plays a mizmar, some sort of strange double reed thing, on the first piece, which sounds perfect along with Kidd's burning tenor and Newman's free-flowing drums. Kali scrapes her piano-harp on "Trancendance," giving this piece a more eerie sound as Kidd plays with more restraint and suspense. When Zali begins playing the piano keyboard, she sounds like McCoy Tyner with Kidd playing in more Trane-like tone. Most spiritually uplifting and ending in a sea of calm waters. Kali plays some fine echoed nai flute on "Reed Trance Plant" in a strong duo with Newman on talking drums. Kali plays some strong out cello on "Received Wisdom" which works perfectly with Kidd Jordan's more laid-back tenor, their warm, wooden tones overlapping in a most sympathetic way. Kali's synth playing is stunning on "Sibelius Suite" which again sounds so fine with Kidd's sublime, touching tone and Newman's splendid mallet work. What is so wonderful about this disc is that it is just a trio that approaches each piece with care, craft and a spiritual vibe at the center. I do find this music to be completely transcendent. - BLG

BEN ALLISON & MAN SIZE SAFE With RON HORTON/STEVE CARDENAS /MICHAEL BLAKE/MICHEAL SARIN - Little Things Run The World (Palmetto 2131; USA) Ben's 8th album as a leader features his quintet Man Size Safe playing four new rocking Allison originals, two Allison classics, a soulful interpretation of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy", and a new tune by guitarist Steve Cardenas. Man Size Safe plays with a cinematic, rock-meets-Americana sound that mixes joyous exuberance and good-humored irreverence with textured grooves and an occasional political jab. The group features Michael Blake (saxophones), Ron Horton (trumpet), Steve Cardenas (guitar), Ben Allison (bass), and Michael Sarin (drums).

FRANK KIMBROUGH - Air: Solo Piano (Palmetto 2127; USA) Kimbrough belongs to an elite group of pianist-composers able to dream in many odd colors and time signatures, leaving curious designs and brighter moods in their wake. - Gene Seymour, NY Newsday. On Frank's first solo piano recording for Palmetto, he explores his own compositions as well as compositions from Paul Motian, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk.

BOOTS BROWN [MATS GUSTAFSSON/MAGNUS BROO/DAVID STACKENAS] - Boots Brown (Slottet 17; EEC) Boots Brown is a special improv quartet that features Mats Gustafsson on alto, tenor & slide saxes, Magnus Broo on trumpet, David Stackenas on acoustic guitar & electronics and Johan Berthling on double bass. No doubt you know Swedish sax great, Mats Gustafsson from the dozens of bands/projects he is involved with, especially noteworthy are The Thing & Brotzmann's Chicago Tentet. Magnus Broo is a member of Atomic as well as that Adam Lane's 4 Corners Qt (w/ Vandermark) on Clean Feed. Guitarist David Stackenas played here at DMG in a fine duo with Tatsuya Nakatani and has duo discs out with Mats, Martin Kuchen and Sten Sandell. I don't know their bassist, Johan Berthling very well, but he does have a trio with Fredrik Ljungvist and Raymon Strid.
This is mostly acoustic free/form Euro improv with a bit of electronics as some subtle alien spice. There is calming vibe that occurs here and there, as the quartet emerges or submerges through more or less dense situations. Rather than doing any screaming or blasting, Mats plays a great deal of more restrained sax that works just right with the contemplative acoustic guitar and somber trumpet. Stackenas often uses an e-bow on his acoustic guitar to get it shimmer and hum so that the entire quartet melts into dronescapes at times. There are moments when Stackenas is astonishing, playing fast lines of notes meticulously, yet with some restraint, reminding me of Dunmall collaborator Philip Gibbs, another amazing unsung guitar hero. While I wouldn't exactly call this lower-case or even typically Euro-style improv, I would say that there is a magical and somewhat even melodic thread that runs through much of this fine effort. That great (also Scandinavian) trio with Ingar Zach that played at Victo might be a better comparison. - BLG

MICHAEL BLAKE With KRESTEN OSGOOD - The World Awakes: A Tribute To Eli 'Lucky' Thompson (Stunt 7092; EEC) "Saxophonist Lucky Thompson was almost naive, extremely honest, in his music - and this goes for his compositions as well. He was very advanced rhythmically. He came out of the swing era, but in the '50s his playing was influenced by bebop, and later still he almost went modal. And the records he made in the early '70s show that even then he was still interested in what was new."
The above is a condensed version of Canadian born New Yorker, saxist Michael Blake's admiring assessment of the legendary Thompson, who died bin 2005. His words also become the motivation for his latest release THE WORLD AWAKES - A TRIBUTE TO ELI "LUCKY" THOMPSON. 42-year old Michael Blake has always involved himself in diverse projects, from his years with the Lounge Lizards, through his free music groups in New York, his film and theater scores and recent years' acclaimed CD's with Blake Tatare. In other words Blake is versatile, and one of those jazz musicians who explores and seeks inspiration within the tradition, while at the same time expanding its borderlines.

LELO NIKA - Moving Landscapes (Stunt 7162; EEC) Featuring: Lelo Nika (accordion), Niklas Sivelov (piano), John Sund (guitar), Anders Blanke (violin), and numerous others on bass and drums. All original Music from Nika. "This guy, Lelo Nika, is the greatest accordion player who has ever lived. This guy he's the greatest virtuoso who has ever lived. He is a gipsy, he's from Belgrade, who grew up in Copenhagen. One day, I was playing in Copenhagen and he came in and wanted to play something for me. And we sat in a dressing room, a small dressing room, and he started a sad play, and I never in my life heard anybody playing like this. So we said "OK, we make a little project" - it was incredible, with the band as special guest, incredible, É this guy plays Paganini, you know... I never heard something similar in my life!" - Joe Zawinul

NEW from the fine folks at ESP:
ALAN ROTH - Inside Out In The Open [DVD] (ESP Disk 4042; USA) [Playable anywhere in the world, this dual-sided DVD has NTSC all-region on one side, PAL all-region on the other!]
"Featured interviews: Marion Brown, Roswell Rudd, John Tchicai, Alan Silva, Burton Greene, Joseph Jarman, Baikida Carroll, William Parker, Daniel Carter, Matthew Shipp, Susie Ibarra. Featured performers: Denis Charles, Glenn Spearman, Wilber Morris, Joseph Jarman, Peter Brotzmann, John Tchicai, Sun Ra and his Arkestra, In Order To Survive (William Parker, Cooper-Moore, Rob Brown, Susie Ibarra), Other Dimensions In Music (Roy Campbell, Daniel Carter, Rashid Bakr, William Parker, Matt Shipp, Baikida Carroll and Reggie Workman and more. Inside Out In The Open is an hour-long documentary about a form of jazz, popularly known as 'free jazz.' The film is an exploration of that music through the voices and performances of over twenty such musicians, from those who were its first generation to younger musicians joining the tradition. Unlike more encyclopedic documentaries, Inside Out In The Open unfolds in a more organic and musical form, revealing multiple aspects of this music and its makers. The editing structure is reflective and complimentary to the music. Free-form jazz, also known as the 'the new thing,' or 'avant-garde jazz,' burst on the scene in the early '60s, led by Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. It vastly extended the boundaries in rhythm, sound, and harmonics, stressing collective improvisation, with an expansive openness and with deep personal emotion. The release of Inside Out In The Open comes on the heels of the major 10-part Jazz series by Ken Burns, which was criticized for giving little attention to jazz after 1960, and for being critical of the genre of free jazz. With only a small amount of media work available on this development in jazz, Inside Out In The Open is a welcome contribution, giving overdue respect to these musical artists." Produced, directed and edited by Alan Roth. Running time: 1 hour.

LINDA KALLERDAHL - Gold (ESP Disk 4041; USA) Featuring Lindha Kallerdahl on grand piano, organ & vocals. Lindha Kallerdahl, born in 1972, studied jazz at the renowned Swedish Jazz-Schools Skurup near Malmš and Birka in Stockholm during 1993-1996. Situated in Stockholm, she early came in touch with free music and made successful collaborations in with Mats Gustavsson, David StackenŠs, Raymond Strid, Mattias Windemo and Fredrik Ljungkvist. In the summer of 2000 Lindha made a spectacular project together with Sonic Youth, Jim O'Rourke, Mats Gustafsson and dancer Lotta Melin among others. In a small town on the southern countryside of Sweden the combo gave about 15-20 concerts in a row within a couple of weeks. The music was recorded and released in 2005 on Smalltown Supersound under the title HIDROS. Lindha's original style and emotional impact has been headhunted for different projects and she has made tours with -- for example -- Thomas Lehn and Jaap Blonk. One of these projects featured Ikue Mori and Lise-Lotte Norelius and was a new and important step for Lindha's development and also led to new musical encounters with Okkuyng Lee at Tonic, New York 2005. In 2003, Thomas Gustafsson and Lindha explored new ways of improvising and live-composing and came up with the groundbreaking Silent Arrow on Footprint Records in 2006. This album also features Anders Kjellberg and Owe Almgren. New ESP artist! Previously only available as an import."

STEVE LACY With ENRICO RAVA/JOHNNY DYANI/LOUIS MOHOLO - The Forest And The Zoo (ESP Disk 1060; USA) "Lacy's profound influence on the avant-garde can be traced back to this phenomenal session with Enrico Rava (trumpet), Johnny Dyani (bass), and Louis T. PAULINE OLIVEROS/MIYA MASAOKA - Accordion Koto (Deep Listening 36; USA) "Listening to this recording session I am lifted to a world both evanescent and yet somehow connected to a distinct culture of music making in the 21st centuryÉ" - Miya Masaoka
"Though an unlikely combination - accordion and koto - it is not so much
about the instruments as about the energies of the music that comes from the
intensity of listening - listening as close to "now" as possible. We know that our consciousness is delayed by a fraction of a second that the brain interprets as now - however the body is instantaneous in its perception. Thus the phenomena of playing and becoming conscious of what has played - been played - is a continually surprising experience in such improvisation." - Pauline Oliveros

ELLEN FULLMAN / MONIQUE BUZZARTE - Fluctuations (Deep Listening 38; USA) Monique Buzzarte and Ellen Fullman began working together in June 2005. These collaborative compositions are rooted in tonalities that unfold with unexpected possibilities. Buzzarte's trombone navigates and merges through an infinite array of distinct overtones from Fullman's Long String Instrument. With slight timbral variations and pitch juxtapositions, sympathetic resonances articulate overtone colorations and threads of resultant melodic fragments emerge and intertwine.

KEEFE JACKSON'S PROJECT PROJECT with GUILLERMO GREGORIO/JEB BISHOP/DAVE REMPIS/FRANK ROSALY - Just Like This (Delmark DE 580; USA) Twelve piece band playing six fresh new compositions with amazing charts written by leader, tenor saxist Keefe Jackson. Project Project is Josh Berman, Jaimie Branch, trumpet; Jeb Bishop, Nick Broste, trombone; Marc Unternahrer, tuba; James Falzone, clarinet; Guillermo Gregorio, alto sax & clarinet; Keefe Jackson, tenor sax & bass clarinet; Jason Stein, bass clarinet; Dave Rempis, alto and baritone sax; Anton Harwich, bass; Frank Rosaly, drums. The Fayetteville, Arkansas native moved to Chicago in 2001 and garnered much critical acclaim with his 2006 release Ready Everyday (Delmark 571). Stylistically could be described as Mingus meets AACM!
"This is an extraordinary 12-piece band featuring a number of Chicago's favorite sons. I know of about half the names here from various projects, like Jeb Bishop & Dave Rempis (Vandermark 5), Guillermo Gregorio (numerous CDs on Hat), Jason Stein & Frank Rosaly. When this disc arrived last month, I played it several times and marveled at it on each play. Both trombonists open "Dragon Fly" with some shrewd back & forth 'bone action. When the rest of the band finally comes in, they sound righteous and strong. Jaimie Branch takes a completely twisted flugel solo before the band again hits their stride. Jason Stein, who once played the store and has worked with Vandermark, takes a great, bent bass clarinet solo that comes out of the Braxton tradition. "The Grass is Greener" features some power playing and auspicious charts when it opens followed by a fine Paul Rutherford-like trombone and tuba duo. I dig the way this band goes back and forth effortlessly between small group improv sections and full blast of small big band tight (charted) sections. This takes some hard work and I am often reminded of some of European brethren like LJCO or Mike Westbrook in the sixties. I find Keefe Jackson's writing to be most impressive as he blends complex harmonies and rhythms along with some more restrained yet inspired solos and duos. This is one of this season's finest releases so don't pass it up. - BLG

Third and Fourth Cuneiform releases for 2008!
MATS/MORGAN BAND [MATS OBERG/MORGAN AGREN] - Heat Beats Live/Morgan Agren Tourbook 1991-2007 [CD + DVD] (Cuneiform 265/266; USA) Featuring Mats Oberg (keyboards) and Morgan Agren (drums) have been playing together for over 25 years. Mats/Morgan have released six previous albums (as well as assorted side/solo projects) for their own UAE label for a decade before signing with Cuneiform and releasing their very popular "Thanks For Flying With Us" album. Heat Beats is an excellently recorded live album (except for the applause you would never know it was a live recording) which covers two years of work, featuring Mats and Morgan alone, together and with up to 3 additional musicians. The music is their modern blend of composition, improvisation, complexity and hypnotic beats, as well as their sense of humor. Also included in this package is a second disc, which is Morgan Agren's long worked upon and anticipated DVD release, both with Mats and with other musicians as well.
"This DVD contains various recordings made during a 16 year span, including live and studio recordings featuring many of my favorite musicians, plus lots of solo drums. I am happy that all of this material is recorded at all. It would have been a shame to set my hair on fire without being able to see it after..." - Morgan Agren
CD + DVD set for $21
PLANETA IMAGINARIO - Biomasa (Cuneiform 268;USA) Planeta Imaginario are a terrific 8-piece jazz/rock band who have been in existence since 1999. This is their second album and the first to be released outside of their native Spain. The band features keyboards (Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ, piano and synthesizer), trombone, two saxists on alto and tenor, trumpet, guitar, fretless bass and drums. This is a band who know how to write a great tune and how to arrange that tune in a way to bring out all it has to offer and how to leave room for the individual musicians to contribute to it, both in terms of ensemble work and in their solos! They have a distinctive and attractive Mediterranean sound; you certainly can hear echoes of other jazz/rock bands in their work (Chick Corea's Spanish-tinged fusion works, Gilgamesh, the instrumental sections by Hatfield and the North, a less guitar-oriented Iceberg and Musica Urbana come easiest to mind), but they really don't sound like anyone else and this is a very exciting release from a great band that we think will be receiving a lot of attention as soon as people hear this album. "Fine arrangements...of interesting and intelligent compositions, excellently played ö these are fine musicians...impressive..."-Chris Cutler

BEAT CIRCUS [BRIAN CARPENTER/BRANDON SEABROOK/BRIGGAN KRAUSS/ALEC K REDFEARN] - Dreamland (Cuneiform 264; USA) Beat Circus has created a singular intriguing sonic identity by filtering certain bizarre old-time American and European pre-jazz styles through a progressive contemporary fearlessness."- Weekly Planet
You can hear echoes of Tom Waits, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Kurt Weill, Carla Bley, Hans Eisler, Bernard Herrman and much much more here, but what it all combines into could only come from Beat Circus! Included is a really nice 12-page, full color booklet with lots of historical (and creepy) imagery!

CHRIS McGREGOR'S BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH - Eclipse At Dawn (Cuneiform 262; USA) Eclipse at Dawn captures the band at an early peak, performing in front of a huge, rapturous crowd at the Berliner Jazztage on November 4, 1971. Recorded by German radio, this is probably the best live recording of the Brotherhood in existence! There is a version of Dollar Brand's composition "Eclipse at Dawn", which the Brotherhood never recorded anywhere else, as well as exciting, wild & extended versions of many favorites from their first two albums. Included in the 16-page booklet are never-before published photos from the concert and liner notes.

Also, Only a Handful of these two already out-of-print Japanese editions of Cuneiform releases With EXTRA CUTS!
ELTON DEAN With MARC CHARIG/PHIL HOWARD/NEVILLE WHITEHEAD et al - Just Us + 1 (Disk Union/Cuneiform; Japan) [Japanese edition with xtra cut over U.S. edition, the 5 minute "A. N. 1" the disc was manufactured for the Japanese market, but these copies come in the American jewel case] Reissue on CD of Elton's very first solo album (with the scorpions on the cover), recorded & released in 1971, while he was still a member of Soft Machine. In addition to the original album, we have added 25' of never heard bonus material [30' with the Japanese bonus cut] recorded live in 1972.
This CD captures a mind-blowing parallel to the Softs, with Marc Charig on cornet (from the Tippett Group & Softs 3rd & 4th), Phil Howard-a mallad master like Robert Wyatt on drums (from 1 side only of Softs 5), and Neville Whitehead on el. bass. Guests include main Softs soloist Mike Ratledge on el. piano & fuzz organ (1 track only), Roy Babbington on acoustic bass (from Softs 4, 7 & Bundles), Nick Evans on trombone (Softs 3rd & 4th& the Tippett unit), Jeff Green on 6 string el. bass and South African wonder-drummer Louis Moholo (from the Blue Notes, BoB & Tippett unit as well) on one track only. An essential reissue plus!" - BLG

HUGH HOPPER - 1984 + 6 (Disk Union/Cuneiform; Japan) [Japanese edition with 6 extra cuts - 13' worth of short alternate takes - over the U.S. CD edition; the disc was manufactured for the Japanese market, but these copies come in the Amercian jewel case] 1984 combines Hugh's unique fuzz bass & compositions with tapework, multiple overdubs, & a very avant esthetic, & then contrasts those works with short, weirdly devolved James Brown-inspired pieces. 25 years later, the originality and distinctiveness of Hugh's vision on 1984 remains untouched. Taken from the original master tapes, this includes a never heard bonus track [+ the 6 Japanese-only cuts] from the original sessions, as well as new notes by Hugh that tell the story of 1984. Absolutely a classic!

Only a few copies of each of these -they're so damned expensive!
GAVIN HARRISON & 05RIC - Drop (Squatter Madras 02; UK) Gavin Harrison, drummer from Porcupine Tree [and soon-to-be fifth member of King Crimson, along with Pat Mastelotto, Tony Levin, Adrian Belew, and Robert Fripp] with 05ric, designer/player of the Crimson Extended Range Bass/Guitar [7 string]. Guests include Fripp, soundscapes on "Sailing" and "Where Are You Going"; and Dave Stewart, keys on "Centered"
"As might be expected for people totally comfortable playing in time signatures that read more like mobile telephone numbers, there's no end of sinuous, knotty noodlage to be found between Porcupine Tree and all-round percussion guru, Gavin Harrison, and bassist, 05Ric.
Brought together after a chance encounter via myspace, Drop has more than a whiff of old-school jazz-rock fusion as the duo perambulates around their respective kit on this dexterous collaboration.
Within this instrumental prowess winds a series of lyrics emotively sung by Ric. Be warned though, these melodies can be devilishly slippery to grab a hold of, snaking and circulating between Ric's torrid tapping and the pointillist accents and pulses that Harrison delights in uncovering throughout the duration of this record.
With some guest atmospherics from guitarist Robert Fripp, things really open up with the addition of Gary Sanctuary's piano on 'Where Are You Going.' And with ex-Hatifeld Dave Stewart tempted to make a Canterbury sound or two on the galloping riff-fest, "Centred", what's not to like? - Sid Smith

THEO TRAVIS QUARTET + ROBERT FRIPP - Double Talk (33Jazz 63; UK) Fripp on 3 cuts including Syd Barrett's 'See Emily Play'. "Theo Travis seems to delight in changing his musical skin with every album he releases. This is no surprise for a player who is at ease in the worlds of blistering tenor work-outs in straight ahead jazz, progressive rock (with The Tangent, Gong) post-rock (David Sylvian), jazz-rock (Soft Machine Legacy) and ambient excursions via Cipher and now Robert Fripp.
If you want to know why Travis is in such demand then the soprano sax solo on Ascending tells you all you need to know. His talent for finding the very heart of a melody is reminiscent at times of the steely poise of Jan Garbarek in places, and certainly just as rewarding. That canny sense of judgement is reflected in his choice of the core group.
Pete Whittaker's ethereal Hammond organ provides a flowing backdrop for Travis and guitarist Mike Outram. The latter's contributions are simply outstanding - offering splenetic David Torn-like outbursts on The Relegation of Pluto and sublimely limpid echo-drenched arcs on Oblivionville. Along with Roy Dodds' shrewd drumming, they fuse into a magnificent unit on the epic And So It Seemed, a breath-taking assault played to perfection.
Alongside his own writing, Travis regularly pulls off quality cover versions. 2004's Earth To Ether breathed life into 21st Century Schizoid Man, whilst Here's That Rainy Day (2001's Heart of the Sun) caught the ballad's eerie air of haunted desolation. His choice on this album of Pink Floyd's See Emily Play is understandable given his affections for the 1960s (evidenced elsewhere on the record by the fabulously catchy Portobello 67). Although it doesn't quite capture the elusive stellar sparkle of the original, it allows Travis to squeeze out some enjoyable old-school wah-wah on the sax.
Guest player Robert Fripp helps Travis' looped, multi-track flutes create a refined and sensuous gravity-free ballet, adding to the sense of depth, space and stylistic abandonment that transcends the usual conventions and concerns of the jazz album. It's a difficult tightrope for any jazz player to walk, but the sure-footed progress displayed throughout Double Talk, Theo Travis makes it look and sound effortless. - Sid Smith

JAKKO M JAKSZYK With DAVE STEWART/ROBERT FRIPP/HUGH HOPPER /DANNY THOMPSON/MEL COLLINS - The Bruised Romantic Glee Club [Ltd signed ed; 2 CD set] (IcenI 2007; Germany) The Bruised Romantic Glee Club is a stunning and beautifully packaged 2CD set containing one disc of powerfully haunting original songs and another comprising unlikely cover versions of material by Soft Machine, King Crimson and Henry Cow. Featuring sophisticated production values and inspired guest performances from a stellar cast that includes Robert Fripp, Mel Collins, Danny Thompson, Gavin Harrison, Dave Stewart, Hugh Hopper and many others, this is Jakko Jakszyk's most accomplished and heartfelt release to date.
"Encompassing art-rock jokers 64 Spoons (Stravinsky meets the Barron Knights) the Stiff record label, dalliances with several Canterbury sound legends, a spell with Level 42, award-nominated Radio 3 documentary maker, and singer /guitarist in King Crimson alumni project, 21st Century Schizoid Band, Jakko's musical career has been nothing if not eclectic. Jakszyk (pronounced Jack-Chick by the way) cut his teeth listening and playing along to Crimson, Henry Cow and Soft Machine albums back in the early 70s, cultivating a prodigious technique that would see him working with many of his schoolboy heroes many years later.
His latest album is something of a 2 disc sentimental journey; one part autobiography, one part celebratory cover versions and adaptations of the music that inspired him to become a musician in the first place. Joined by a brace of heavyweight musos including sax player Mel Collins, Hatfield keyboard maestro, Dave Stewart, Porcupine Tree's Gavin Harrison, Danny Thompson, Soft Machine's Hugh Hopper, and King Crimson's Robert Fripp amongst others, the potentially sprawling firepower available to Jakko on this release is tempered by his disciplined ear for first class melodies. The result is an unexpectedly accessible album with musical chops and commercial hooks in equal measure. - Sid Smith

SUN RA QUARTET PLUS - Disco 3000: The Complete Milan Concert 1978 - Expanded Edition [2 CD set] (Art Yard CD02; UK) Rejoice my friends, the long-awaited and legendary Sun Ra 'Disco 3000' is finally here! Half of this incredibly rare artifact was available on a limited-edition LP a few years back, but is now out-of-print on vinyl. Recorded at The Teatro Cilak on January 23rd of 1978 in Milan, Italy. These CDs contain the entire concert from which Disco 3000 was taken, meaning more than an hour of previously unheard material, and the LP selections are here set in their original context. What is it about this disc that makes it so special?
This is one of Sun Ra's rare small group sessions, featuring Mr. Ra on piano, organ, Moog & Crumar Mainman synths & rhythm machine, John Gilmore on tenor sax & drums, Michael Ray on trumpet, June Tyson on vocals, Luqman Ali on drums with everyone also doing vocals. Most of the twelve pieces here are seldom-heard Sun Ra songs, not many of the same pieces that Ra has covered over and over through the years and myriad of recordings. The music has been mastered directly from the original concert tapes and has splendid stereo sound. "Disco 3000" actually has some creatively used rhythm machine beats flowing through, yet it constantly evolves with both Michael Ray's trumpet and John Gilmore's tenor swirling around with Sun Ra's cosmic synth. They break out into a spirited version of "Space is the Place" with a great chorus of voices. What makes this entire two disc so magical (or cosmic) is the way it unfolds organically and moves through interconnected sections. The quintet sounds relaxed, confident, exploratory and more focused than I usual. Sun Ra's keyboards are central to almost everything that happens here and he is constantly engaging the other members in layers of dialogue. What is astonishing is when Sun Ra sets up one layer of rhythmic lines with one hand, while he also will play duos or trios with the tenor and/or trumpet at the same time, with his other hand. The opening track, "Disco 3000" is 26-minutes long and is consistently fascinating throughout. Sun Ra's playing and band-leading is consistently orchestral in sound, thus making this the one Sun Ra classic gem that everyone who reads this must own. Need we say more? - BLG

SUN RA & HIS OMNIVERSE JET-SET ARKESTRA - Complete Detroit Jazz Center Residency: December 26 1980 - January 1 1981 [28 CD Set] (Transparency 307; USA) Second edition - no longer limited! When I heard about this box-set, I thought it was cosmic joke, played upon us crazed Sun Ra fans, but lo and behold, it is here and is another holy grail for those of us who worship at the temple or Outer Spaceways Incorporated! Yes, you did read right! This handsome box-set contains 28 CD-R's, eleven complete concerts, 26+ hours of music, from the Detroit Jazz Center Residency from December 26th, 1980 to January 1st, 1981. The personnel features Sun Ra on organ, synth, piano & vocals, Marshall Allen and John Gilmore on saxes, Michael Ray on & Walter Miller on trumpets, June Tyson on vocals & dance, Tony Bethel on trombone, Vincent Chancey on French horn, Danny Thompson on bass & flute, James Jacson on bassoon & Infinity drum, Skeeter McFarland & Taylor Richardson on electric guitars, Richard Williams on bass and Luqman Ali on drums.
So far, I've listened to ten of these discs and it will take me a while to check them all out. Besides the 28 discs, inside the box we also find two large pages that list all of the song titles from each disc. A large portion of these sets featured dozens of Sun Ra's original compositions, chanting, inspired soloing as well as a variety of standards from Fletcher Henderson, Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Duke Ellington and classics like "Over the Rainbow" and "Big John's Special." Although these are all record from the soundboard, the sound quality is relatively good but certainly not great. Some tweaking from you home stereo will help, but the sound is far from perfect. I was fortunate to have experienced the Sun Ra Arkestra some 25+ times throughout the 70's, 80's and early 90's and the late 70's was my favorite period. These sets remind me most of this period and cover a lot of the same songs, themes, chants, frenetic solos and everything else that made these gigs like a trip to another alien world. I'm reaching for that 7th disc now, as my long journey continues to Saturn and beyond. - BLG

SILVIA FASSLER & BILLY ROISZ - Skylla (Editions Mego D01; Austria) Silvia Fassler: computer, electronics, guitar; Billy Roisz: computer, turntable. This is the long-awaited debut collaboration between these long time associates of Viennese subculture; Silvia in various curatorial roles and Billy as video artist. Skylla is a monster. A sheering, scathing collision of computer-generated sounds meshed with guitar and turntable. The results are intense yet bearable, funny but not stupid. From the rhythmical excesses of "Pink Umbrella" and "Kirre" to the subtle dronescape of "Syne," this is a full-on experience. Instruments used include the Kluppe Looper and Lloopp.

STEPHEN O'MALLEY & ATTILA CSIHAR - 6¡Fskyquake (Editions Mego D03; Austria) Debut collaborative release by Stephen O'Malley (SunnO))), Khanate, etc.): HP 200CD & Travis Bean/Fender Twin Reverb; and Attila Csihar: vocals. 6 Degree Fskyquake is an audio composition designed in 2001 but explored in conjunction with the American sculptor Banks Violette's solo shows in the summer of 2007. Actually, two shows at two different galleries, Barbara Gladstone & Team, running simultaneously. The interaction of sound and Violette's work revisited concepts touched in prior collaborations: of loss, absence, residual energy of a missed evocative experience. The composition was captured at a recording session during the installation process at Team gallery, and later transfered to Gladstone as a recorded playback to the public. Designed for three separate systems consisting of powered 18" subwoofers and PA tops, the composition runs a total of 8 hours and 35 minutes. This room recording represents a possible stereo interpretation of a portion of that work. The fifth collaboration between Stephen O'Malley & Banks Violette circulated amongst the main theme of sound as physical presence. Sound pressure in substantial space, relative dimension between concrete and perceptual mass, gravity induced by heightened sonic action and standing sub-bass pressure. The contribution of lyrics, text and vocals by Hungarian black metal vocalist Attila Csihar were inspired by his journeys inside imperial Tokyo, bringing an emotional and meditative identity to the otherwise purely structural composition. For this we shall be blessed. The ghost of presence subsists across physical space, the phantom of absence across linear finite, the shadow of mass via memories. What once was.

GERT-JAN PRINS - Break Before Make (Editions Mego D02; Austria) This is Amsterdam-based Gert-Jan Prins' first full-length release. Break Before Make is an arsenal of customized electronics, timpani and voice. Like its predecessor Risk, this record investigates the sonic possibilities to be found in electronic devices and circuits. However, this is no noodling experimental stuff but a compact set of finely-crafted sonics. Short, sharp shocks with a bit of timpani thrown in. Besides his solo-project, current projects include MIMEO, Synchronator and The Flirts. He has collaborated with Pita, Thomas Lehn, Lee Ranaldo, Anne la Berge, Fennesz, Vacuum Boys, Marcus Schmickler, Giuseppe Ielasi, Carlos Giffoni and many more.

CHRIS WATSON - Weather Report (Touch 47; UK) "The weather has created and shaped all our habitats. Clearly it also has a profound and dynamic effect upon our lives and that of other animals. The three locations featured here all have moods and characters that are made tangible by the elements, and these periodic events are represented within by a form of time compression. This is Chris's first foray into composition using his location recordings of wildlife and habitats -- previously he has been concerned with describing and revealing the special atmosphere of a place by site specific, untreated location recordings. For the first time here he constructs collages of sounds, which evolve from a series of recordings made at the specific locations over varying periods of time."

EDGARD VARESE - The Complete Works of Edgard Varese Vol 1 (Cherry Red/El 125; UK) Reissue of the first edition of these seminal early works of Edgard Victor Achille Charles Varese [sometimes shown as Edgar Varese], originally self-issued on LP in 1950 as EMS 401 (this was later reissued to a wider audience on the Finnadar label in 1977). Features: "Integrales"; "Density 21.5"; "Ionisation"; "Octandre" & "Interpolations From Deserts". Recorded 1950, with Robert E. Blake, sound engineer. Performed by the Julliard Percussion Orchestra and New York Wind Ensemble. "Interpolations" is added as bonus to the original LP, a concrete realization recorded in Paris, 1954. First time these recordings are on CD. "These compositions by Edgard Varese, keepsakes of tomorrow originally conceived way back in the 1920s and '30s, offered the aspiring young composer Frank Zappa a sense of life-affirming danger and mystery amid the suffocating cultural conformity of his 1950s upbringing. [This is]...the original 1950 EMS release, recorded under the composer's supervision, the sound couldn't possibly be more vivid or more terrifyingly alive. There's a curiously eastern ambiance to Varese's haunting melodic visions of solo flute on 'Density 21.5', an effect he expands on in the gripping chamber voicings of 'Octandre', where his mastery of the overtone series is such that he makes acoustic woodwinds suggest analog synthesizers. Likewise, on his famous percussion work, 'Ionisation', Varese's layered, chanting poly-rhythms achieve a perfect balance between tribal communalism and modernist defraction. The previously unreleased recording of 'Interpolations' is a jarring hard-left, hard-right, no-center-fill stereo collage of 'organized sounds' recorded on magnetic tape in Paris in 1954. The work anticipates a host of musical milestones we now accept as commonplace? everything from techno and industrial to turntable back-spinning and radical hip-hop sampling." --Zan Stewart/Stereophile.

EDDA DELL'ORSO - Voice (Cherry Red/Bella Casa 08; UK) "Edda Dell'Orso is the sound of Italian cinema. Her astonishing voice is recognizable to anyone who has experienced the landmark spaghetti western films made by Sergio Leone; films that were in the mid-'60s scored by a young whippersnapper called Ennio Morricone. The recent revival of interest in mid-century post-modern art and the restoration of so many wonderful Morricone scores have led many to discover Edda Dell'Orso. Her work is the epitome of intelligence and sophistication. It is utopian in its scope and its potential is vast."

FRANCIS PICABIA - La Nourrice Americaine [The American Nurse] (LTM/Salon 2509; EEC) LTM is pleased to announce the release of a unique CD by influential avant-garde artist Francis Picabia, featuring two interpretations of his provocative 1920 Dadaist piece for piano, together a spoken word extract from 1945. Written in 1920, La Nourrice Americaine (The American Nurse) consists of "three notes repeated to infinity" and was performed for the first - and last - time at the Festival Dada, staged at the Salle Gaveau in Paris on 26 May 1920. A landmark event, the Festival Dada included contributions from Tristan Tzara, Andre Breton, Paul Eluard, Louis Aragon, Philippe Soupault and Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, and launched the Dada phenomenon in Paris. La Nourrice Americaine was performed on the day by Marguerite Buffet, duration unknown. It seems likely that Picabia's only venture into musical composition was inspired by talks with his friends Erik Satie, Marcel Duchamp and Edgard Varese. On this CD fast and slow interpretations are included, both performed by pianist Tom Feldschuh and each lasting for 20 minutes. The CD also includes a rare spoken word piece by Picabia (in the French language), recording a visit to the artist's Paris atelier in July 1945. Artist biography: Born in Paris in 1879, artist, poet and theorist Francis Picabia is recognised as a key figure in the development of abstract art and the avant-garde in the 20th Century. After 1913 he made several visits to New York, where he was active in avant-garde circles and took part in the Armory Show. In 1917 he founded the celebrated periodical 391, and was an active participant in Paris Dada. A friend of composer Erik Satie, the pair collaborated on the ballet Relache in 1924. Picabia later resumed abstract painting and writing poerty; a lover of fast cars, he is said to have owned 150 different vehicles. Picabia died in 1953. Also available from LTM: Various : Voices of Dada (LTMCD 2424), Various : Surrealism Reviewed (LTMCD 2343), Marcel Duchamp : Musical Erratum (LTMCD 2504), Erik Satie : Vexations (LTMCD 2389).

FLO & EDDIE [MARK VOLMAN/HOWARD KAYLAN] - The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie/Flo & Eddie [2 CD set] (FloEdCo/Manifesto; USA) 1st and 2nd album in one 2 CD set! Considering that the Mothers of Invention were my favorite group in the sixties, I jumped at the opportunity to catch the second version of the Mothers at the Fillmore East twice in 1970. This version of the Mothers was fronted by the two former lead singers from The Turtles, another band from LA. The Mothers were hilarious live as one can still hear while listening to their two albums, "Live at the Fillmore" and "Just Another Band from LA". This version of the Mothers lasted just a couple of years, before Zappa was pushed from the stage in London and ended up hospitalized with a broken leg. He soon formed his own jazz/fusion big band, called The Grand Wazoo. Mr.'s Volman & Kaylan formed the Flo & Eddie band that included former Mothers Jim Pons, Aynsley Dunbar and Don Preston plus guitarist Gary Rowles from Love. I caught this version of the Flo & Eddie Band in Central Park opening for The Doors without Jim Morrison. Both bands were great live! The first two Flo & Eddie albums are by far their best and I can't think of any better way to keep an old (2nd version of) The Mothers happy. "I've been born again, again, againÉ" - BLG

HEAVEN - Brass Rock 1 (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2030; UK) Heaven, a jazz rock group from Portsmouth, burst forth onto the British rock scene in 1970 when they appeared at the legendary Isle of Wight festival sharing a bill with The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix et al. Making a stunning debut, the band (now managed by festival organiser Rikki Farr), soon secured a recording deal with CBS Records who signed the band for a large advance.
The resulting double album 'Brass Rock 1' appeared in 1971, adorned in a lavish fold-out sleeve. Well received critically, the album failed to achieve the expected success and Heaven soon disbanded, leaving behind a fine example of classic jazz rock. Officially released on CD for the first time, this Esoteric Recordings reissue is digitally re-mastered from the original master tapes and restores the artwork of the album in full.

RARE BIRD - As Your Mind Flies By (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2002; UK) Rare Bird are perhaps best remembered for having the distinction of being the first act to be released on Tony Stratton Smith's gloriously eclectic label Charisma records (also the home of GENESIS, THE NICE and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR to name but a few) and for their excellent 1970 hit single "Sympathy". Like fellow future Charisma stable mates Van Der Graaf Generator, Rare Bird was formed around the principle of keyboard dominated progressive rock that eschewed the use of guitars. Following the success of their debut album and single ("Sympathy"), the band recorded this classic album in the Summer of 1970, to which this CD adds three BONUS cuts! "As Your Mind Flies By" featured the epic "Flight", a legendary piece which dominated the albums second side. An excellent work, the album met with much success, with Billboard magazine in America declaring Rare Bird to be in the top ten best new acts of the year.

RARE BIRD - Rare Bird (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2001; UK) Rare Bird are perhaps best remembered for having the distinction of being the first act to be released on Tony Stratton Smith's gloriously eclectic label Charisma records (also the home of GENESIS, THE NICE and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR to name but a few) and for their excellent 1970 hit single "Sympathy". Like fellow future Charisma stable mates Van Der Graaf Generator, Rare Bird was formed around the principle of keyboard dominated progressive rock which eschewed the use of guitars. In December 1969 their eponymous debut album was released to great critical acclaim, (also becoming a US Billboard chart hit) and was followed in January 1970 by the release of "Sympathy" b/w "Devil's High Concern", which are included on this CD. The single reached the UK Top 30 and was a subsequent major hit throughout Europe.

SPACE RITUAL [HAWKWIND] - Otherworld (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2011; UK) A band formed by former founder members of Hawkwind, the group Space Ritual are true exponents of Space Rock, performing sell-out concerts drawing on "Classic" Hawkwind repertoire written by Nik Turner, Dave Anderson and Terry Ollis. Now Space Ritual come alive in the 21st Century with a stunning new studio album of original material that takes the ground breaking music of these ex-Hawkwind members into a new dimension that is both contemporary but still aware of its heritage and roots. Also featuring written poems by Sci-fi author Michael Moorcock, "Otherworld" has been described as "more Hawkwind than Hawkwind" by one commentator, but Space Ritual are more than that. They are a band in their own right, with their own style and future.

WEB - I Spider (Cherry Red/Esoteric 2027; UK) I Spider is truly a lost classic of the Progressive era. Originally released by Polydor Records in 1970, the album was influenced by the experiments of groups such as King Crimson, Gentle Giant et al, but was more than a mere clone of these bands.
The group evolved from an excellent blues influenced band who released three albums for Deram, who then recruited Keyboard player and writer Dave Lawson and recorded their final album. The musicianship on the album was excellent and Keyboard player Dave Lawson's compositions were groundbreaking and memorable. The group soon evolved into Samurai (whose eponymous album is also released by Esoteric this month). This Esoteric reissue is re-mastered from the original master tapes and features two bonus tracks recorded live in Sweden in 1971, a booklet with previously unseen photographs and an interview with Dave Lawson.

IVO PERELMAN TRIO With DOMINIC DUVAL/JACKSON KRALL - Black on White (clean feed 24 CP; Portugal) Featuring Ivo Perelman tenor saxophone, Dominic Duval bass, Jackson Krall drums. Over the past few years Brazilian free-jazz tenor sax giant, Ivo Perelman, has been concentrating on his painting career and has been doing a grand job. After some 20 releases on labels like Leo and CIMP, Ivo has finally slowed down a bit and only has one new offering in the past year, that amazing double trio, double CD on Boxholder. This fabulous studio date was actually recorded before that one in March of 2001 and Ivo again uses his main rhythm team of Dominic Duval and Jackson Krall (was Jay Rosen out of town?). Beginning slowly, this trio builds to a frenzy pretty quickly with some heavy tenor sax blasting, propulsive contrabass and rip-roaring drums. Strong and highly intense interaction and mostly exciting throughout.
