TWO PHENOMENAL NEW RELEASES ON 'HUX'!!!
SOFT MOUNTAIN [HUGH HOPPER/ELTON DEAN/HOPPY KAMIYAMA /TATSUYA YOSHIDA] - Soft Mountain (Hux 84; UK) Legendary Soft Machine veterans Elton Dean and Hugh Hopper joined forces in 2003 with wildly creative keyboardist/composer Hoppy Kamiyama and master drummer, Yoshida Tatsuya to create Soft Mountain. Their debut recording is now released here for the first time. Elton Dean & Hugh Hopper are well known amongst jazz/rock fans. In addition to forming half of the classic Soft Machine line-up (with Robert Wyatt & Mike Ratledge) they have also worked with Brotherhood of Breath, Keith Tippett & Long John Baldry's Bluesology (Dean) and Stomu Yamashta, Kevin Ayers & Isotope (Hopper).
Soft Mountain named themselves after Hoppy Kamiyama, whose name translates into God Mountain in English. Hoppy has made about 200 CDs over a nearly 24 year career, so it's hard to say which is the greatest and most influential recording by this musician, who practically invented the modern concept of the keyboardist/composer/producer. Tatsuya Yoshida was without doubt one of the most important drummers on the Japanese scene in the final decades of the 20th century, having spearheaded at least half a dozen of that country's most important groups, including Acid Mothers Temple & The Ruins. This limited edition digi-pack features a liner note from Hugh Hopper
"An amazing non-stop muscular improv that, beside its other virtues, displays some of the most outright dazzling playing I've ever heard from the late Elton Dean. King Kong THUMBS UP!!!" - MannyLunch

MATCHING MOLE [ROBERT WYATT/PHIL MILLER/DAVE McRAE/BILL MacCORMICK] - On The Radio: BBC (Hux 83; UK) Robert Wyatt formed Matching Mole in 1972, shortly after he left Soft Machine and just before launching his solo career. Matching Mole bore some similarities to his later work with Soft Machine. In fact, Wyatt came up with the name 'Matching Mole' as a subtle pun on the French translation of 'Soft Machine' - 'machine molle'.
Matching Mole released two great albums in 1972, before Wyatt's accident that effectively disbanded the group determined his future career as a solo artist. But it is this Hux compilation that Wyatt now describes as the definitive Matching Mole album.
'On The Radio' is a compilation of rare BBC recordings, including 3 John Peel studio sessions and a live concert. Two tracks never before released commercially are included. The band includes Dave Sinclair (ex Caravan), Phil Miller (Hatfield & The North and National Health), Bill MacCormick and Dave MacRae This special digipack format features an original cover photograph by Robert Wyatt, who also compiled the running order. The accompanying 12-page CD booklet features extensive liner notes by Matching Mole bassist, Bill MacCormick, plus rare period photo's and comprehensive recording details.

VANDERMARK 5 [KEN VANDERMARK/DAVE REMPIS/FRED LONBERG-HOLM/KENT KESSLER/TIM DAISY] - Four Sides To The Story: Recorded At Alchemia Nov. 23, 2005 [2 LP box set] (Not Two 775; EEC) LIMITED EDITION [1000 #d copies], DOUBLE-LP BOXSET with 16 PAGE 12x12 BOOK of COLOR PHOTOS & KEN VANDERMARK INTERVIEW...documenting the V5's 2005 gigs in Poland, on their "Color Of Memory" European Tour. FOUR SIDES rivals Not Two's superb ALCHEMIA 12-CD Boxset in quality, is even more limited in quantity, and features live material from both "Color" and the quintet's recently released "A Discontinuous Line". This HEFTY beast is an absolute MUST-HAVE- and it's the first such artifact from the current V5 lineup with Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello.
"When I look back and think about the ideas we were dealing with a year ago, and when I listen to the recording held in that club, I'm confronted with the failures that are there; which is probably why I'd rather be doing something else than writing these liner notes right now. But I'm also excited by what I hear, that the start of the music by the new quintet was so strong. From night to night it continues to be, which is why after ten years this ensemble is still looking for it's next gig- so that it can keep finding something different to say and hopefully pay some of the rent along the way." - Ken Vandermark

NEW ON 'CUNEIFORM'!
GRAHAM COLLIER With JOHN SURMAN/TOMASZ STANKO/KENNY WHEELER/TED CURSON/CONNY BAUER/MANFRED SCHOOF - Hoarded Dreams: Live At The Bracknell Jazz Festival 1983 (Cuneiform 252; USA) Graham Collier is one of the best-known and most important British jazz composers and over a 40 year career, his list of compositions and commissions has grown to encompass ensembles around the world. He is well-known as an author and educator, having written seven books on jazz. Hoarded Dreams is a previously unreleased long-form composition heard here in a powerful live performance from 1983 by an international all-star band. " I came across the phrase Hoarded Dreams in a book... it seemed an ideal title for this commission, [which] is the realization of the jazz composer's constant dream: to be able to hand-pick a group of star musicians to perform a long composition written with absolutely no outside restrictions." Overall the piece inhabits (as indeed does most of my writing) that area between the purely written and the purely improvised."- Graham Collier.
The energy of the ensemble performing the piece in front of a large and enthusiastic audience is very obvious on the recording and there's loads of great soloing as well as inspired and crafty ensemble passages. "Considering that Graham Collier has some 17 fine discs out already, he again triumphs here with an explosive international all-star large ensemble. 70 minutes long and extraordinary throughout. Besides the aforementioned greats, other great soloists here include Art Themen, Henry Lowther, Ashley Brown, Juhanni Aaltonen, Ed Speight, Eje Thelin, Roger Dean, Geoff Warren and Matthias Schubert. Jazz record of the month? No doubt! - BLG

FAR CORNER - Endangered (Cuneiform 246; USA) Second great album by an instrumental chamber/classical rock quartet, Far Corner combine group improvisation with completely scored works, composed in a contemporary, post-Bartokian style in an extremely assured way. Far Corner's second release, Endangered, sees the group expanding their sonic palette with a variety of instruments outside of their core piano/organ, bass, cello, and drumset. This release features instruments such as violin, spring drum, melodica, trumpet, and a greater variety of keyboard sounds, as well as a handful of home-made instruments. Compositionally, the group continues in a predominantly contemporary classical style, augmented by jazz and heavy rock. A long group composition is included, as well as improvised works, and a greater variety of semi-improvisatory sections are included within composed works. Compared to their first release, these new works embody the individual playing styles of each member, creating more expressive and emotional music with enhanced moods and drama. Each composition stretches further in a variety of stylistic directions, from the heavy and aggressive metal-styled "Creature Council" to the jazz tune "Not From Around Here" to the dark and experimental works "Inhuman" and "Claws." Great care has been taken to make all tracks work together as a whole, taking the listener on one path, with many diverse stops along the way. The title Endangered comes from a variety of concepts. The obvious "endangered species" theme may serve as a symbol for the idea that many elements in today's society that were once held dear have become scarce in favor of money-making commercial endeavors. Adventurous music of all types is one of these elements that is threatened, and Far Corner more than does their part to keep it alive.

THE MAHAVISHNU PROJECT [GREGG BENDIAN/PETE McCANN] - Return To The Emerald Beyond [2 CD set] (Cuneiform 242/243; USA) Founded in 2001 by drummer and composer Gregg Bendian, The Mahavishnu Project is dedicated to reviving and bringing to today's audiences the excitement and the transcendent experience of visceral intensity of the early days of jazz/rock in general and the music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra specifically. The band was formed by Gregg to perpetuate the spirit of live performance in which this music was created by performing this great music live! Return to the Emerald Beyond features a 11 piece band interpreting The Mahavishnu Orchestra's Visions of the Emerald Beyond, one of the most explosive albums in the fusion genre. This is not a sound-alike project; Gregg and the band do not try to recreate the solos of the original players. What they do do is capture the amazing intensity and fire that the Mahavishnu Orchestra exuded, add their own selves to it and allow people to experience it first hand in concert and now on record. The band just slay the material and play it with conviction and belief.

NICK DIDKOVSKY/SIRIUS STRING QUARTET - Tube Mouth Bow String (Pogus 21042; USA) "Music for electric guitar, string quartet, computer & live electronics". "These pieces are about the details of musical evolution that emerge from rule-based compositional systems. Using electric guitar, string quartet, electronics, and computer software, we explored territories held together by systems of agreements, forms specified in software, real-time musical choices, and notation. Two of the compositions here, 'She Closes Her Sister With Heavy Bones' and 'What Sheep Herd,' are process pieces whose scores fit very economically on one page. Each score specifies melodic material and a short set of rules. The music precipitates from the interaction between the score's specifications and the decisions that the musicians make during performance. By contrast, Tube Mouth Bow String is a thoroughly-composed piece which notates foot pedal movements, vocal behavior, and bowed string performance, overflowing very uneconomically onto many pages which we pasted onto large poster boards and set before each player. Though this piece leaves no real-time performance decisions to the ensemble, 'Tube Mouth Bow String' is a process piece in a very real sense, as the process was first specified, executed, and auditioned in software, and finally transcribed to common music notation for live performers. 'Improvisation' (simultaneously the easiest and the most difficult of all real-time process pieces to perform) is included here as well, with a solo Machine Core performance providing a bridge between 'She Closes' and 'Tube Mouth.' Closing the CD, 'Just a Voice That Bothered Him' sounds like it could have been composed systematically but evades rules instead, being composed intuitively by ear. The piece emerged in opposition to one vividly frustrating weekend of fruitless systematic composition, and for that, gets the last word."

NICK DIDKOVSKY/MICHAEL LYTLE/GERRY HEMINGWAY - Swim This (Punos Music 0006; USA) An odd new trio featuring Nick Didkovsky on tabletop guitar & homebrew software, Michael Lytle on bass & contrabass clarinets & tapes and Gerry Hemingway on drums, voice w/ processing. Both Nick and Michael are longtime members of Dr. Nerve, although you might also recall Mr. Lytle as an original member of the downtown scene when he had albums with George Cartwright. In recent years, Nick has become more known as a composer, as a seasoned improviser with Paul Rogers & Kevin Norton. Gerry Hemingway is one of the distinctive percussionists, composers and bandleaders and should be well-known to fans of Braxton, BassDrumBone and that trio great with Georg Graewe & Ernst Reijseger.
This disc was recorded live at a performance at Experimental Intermedia in March of 2006. Three highly inventive improvisers (or instant composers) matching wits and working most creatively together. Featured here are two long (30+ minute) pieces that begin slowly and take their time to explore unique terrain. Squeaking bass clarinet, subtle electronics and small percussion sounds swirl freely together. That growling contrabass clarinet, eerie tapped guitar sounds and subtle hands-on-drums textures all add up to a strange, other-worldly undertow that pulls us into the murky waters. I like the way the trio work their way into segments that sound planned when they all connect into one streamlined force. What sounds just right here is that the bass clarinet squawks work so well with the subtle electronics or guitar textures and well-selected percussive sounds. A rich and varied improv date that doesn't always sound improvised. - BLG

STEPHEN SCOTT - The Deep Spaces (New Albion 132; USA) "The Deep Spaces, the most recent in my series of bowed piano compositions, is a fantasy song-cycle celebrating the power and grandeur evoked by poets and composers over two millennia - of one of the world's most dazzling and enchanting locales: Lake Como, surely the brightest jewel in the crown of the Alps and mountain lakes that adorn Italy's far north, just below Switzerland. The song texts, set for soprano soloist with the ensemble serving as accompanying orchestra (and, occasionally, chorus), are taken from writers as distant in time, culture, psychology and aesthetic stance from on another as Pliny the Younger, aristocratic native of Como and chronicler of many aspects of Roman life in the first and second centuries A.D., William Wordsworth, whose poetry celebrates both the Lake District of hi native England and the Italian Lake District he loved, and Pablo Medina, a twenty-first century poet and novelist of Cuban ancestry residing and teaching in New York. Listeners may also recognize musical themes and motives I have borrowed from composers linked to Como and the Italian mountains such as Liszt and Berlioz, weaving them together with my own melodies and textures. The Bowed Piano Ensemble was founded at Colorado College in 1977, has evolved into a small orchestra whose wide range of sound colors and textures are all coaxed from one open grand piano by ten musicians wielding nylon filament, horsehair, hand-held piano hammers, guitar picks, and other devices."

JEFFREY RODEN - Seeds of Happiness (New Albion 133; USA) "These 26 pieces for 1961 Fender Precision bass are comprised of two sets of miniature and minimalist cycles, recorded entirely over two separate days in Los Angeles area studios; each contains the briefest treatment that Roden could manage to convey the feelings and sensations at hand; they are as finite and elusive as leaves on a tree, as pearls on a string; a kind of melodic meditation - there is an idea, seeds, flowers... a kind of a musical seed catalog in a med/mex ambient light, with a social samba lurking beneath, or maybe an offering for spiritual equilibrium

DIMITRI VOUDOURIS - NPFAI.1/Palmos/NPFAI.3/Praxis (Pogus 21043; USA) "South African composer Dimitri Voudouris (b.1961 Athens, Greece) began composing in the '90s. He composes for acoustic instruments, electronic sound sources, multimedia, including dance and theatre. He bases his technical and theoretical compositional approach in research of cognitive psycho-acoustic behavioral patterns in humans and the behavior of sound in relationship to continued environmental changes. His socio-cultural interests have led him to research the survival of music in the 21st century and the impact that media and technology have on the composer. 'NPFAI.1' (New Possibilities for African Instrument) is an electro-acoustic composition for kundi and m'bira with computer-assisted processing. Kalimba or m'bira is a finger piano made of wood and metal strips used in ceremonial music. In 'Palmos,' Voudoris chose three Western instruments -- the Hammond organ, oboe, and the bandoneon -- whose overtone and harmonic capabilities allowed for interlocking moments to take place, a phenomenon that is ever present in African traditional music. 'NPFAI. 3,' third in a series of electro-acoustic studies, is for African marimba and computer-assisted processing. 'Praxis' is a four-channel tape piece using a recording of an Christian Orthodox Greek male choir and computer-assisted processing. 566 sound compartments were created that ranged from 10 to 40 seconds in time duration.

JONAS BRAASCH - Global Reflections (Deep Listening 34; USA) Jonas Braasch is a soprano saxophonist, improviser/composer, acoustician and a dedicated collector of binaural soundscapes. The core of the project "Global Reflections" is a collection of Binaural Soundscapes that were recorded between the years of 1998 and 2006. They are presented on the odd tracks of this CD.
"What has fascinated me most about these pieces is nature's ability to align independent events to form interesting patterns. For this, I took the standpoint of the observer; my credits are merely due to choosing the time and place of the recording. Consequently, the effect is often similar to aleatoric works of music. I hope you will share my enthusiasm about the variety of auditory icons in each Soundscape, which makes a city identifiable. All even tracks contain pieces of my own work. The solo improvisations in Tracks 2, 6, 10, and 14 can be seen as an abstract transformation of my perceived environment. Only the beginning theme in Track 2 was fixed before the recording. In Track 10, you might be able to notice my affection for repetitive and machinery like sounds.
Tracks 4, 8, and 12 consist of ensemble recordings with soprano saxophone, Moog bass, and Soundscape fragments. One goal was to preserve the original character of each instrument or environmental sound opposed to making their origin unidentifiable through extensive electronic processing. Indeed in some cases, the lengthy Soundscapes shape the character of the piece, and again I am surprised how often their aleatoric elements tend to fit perfectly into the music. "A Night in Battambang" was written in 1995 while visiting my parents in Cambodia. The piece was performed using the classic rock trio formation of lead instrument, bass and drums when I arranged the song for this CD. "Time to Move On" is based on a Turkish 9/8 rhythm, the Karsilama. Originally, the piece had a theme but in the end, I liked the track better without it. I decided to counterpoint the long, circular-breathed saxophone phrases with abrupt changes for the remaining instruments. The ballad, "Blues Me," started as an experiment while wondering why tenor saxophone ballads are usually slower than alto and soprano saxophone ballads. At 50 beats per minute, this ballad is at the lower end of most Tenor Ballads. Long Soundscape passages were chosen to reflect the lethargy." - Jonas Braasch

LUCIANO BERIO - Differences/Sequenze III e VII/Due Pezzi/Chamber Music [LP only] (Lilith 121; Russia) "Collection of works (1951-1969) by Italian avant-garde composer and sound pioneer Luciano Berio. Featuring performances by mezzo soprano (and muse of such composers as Stravinsky, Bussotti and Henze) Cathy Berberian and leading oboe virtuoso Heinz Hollinger, as well as one of the first attempts to combine live instrumentation with pre-recorded sound."

THE SURREALISTS: MAGRITTE, LE GROUPE SURREALISTE DE BRUXELLES, RUPTURE [V.A.] - Volume 2: Magritte, le groupe Surrealiste de Bruxelles, Rupture (Sub Rosa 242; Belgium) This second volume aural document is devoted to the Brussels Surrealist Group, 1926, following in the surrealist footsteps that Dada, Pansaers et Correspondance Volume 1 (1917-1926) established. On this compilation you can hear rare documents, including the voice of Magritte explaining why it's impossible to answer the questions of journalists. As a nucleus started forming in 1924 around Magritte, Nouge, Lecomte, etc., dissension arose, spawning Correspondance (1924-26). This release documents the editorial activities of Magritte and Mesens, the only issue of Sophage (1925), and the obvious influence of Dada (Schwitters was a contributor). The avant-garde is stateless, but this release, along with the other two releases in the series, limit themselves to the geographical space comprised between France, Germany and The Netherlands, where the main language is French. This region's experiments and discoveries are missing in French and international anthologies. This compilation, and the project as a whole, is an urgent attempt to document an important aspect of surrealism that most surely would have disappeared into dusty archives, if not released to the world. Other artists include: Louis Scutenaire, Marcel Marien, Paul Colinet, Andre Souris, Paul Delvaux, Constant Malva, Achille Chavee and Fernand Dumont.

THE SURREALISTS: DADA, PANSAERS ET CORRESPONDANCE [V.A.] - Volume 1: Dada, Pansaers Et Correspondance (1917-1926) (Sub Rosa 225; Belgium) This is the first volume in an archival collection of Belgian avant-garde big-wigs from Magritte to Broodthaers, and James Ensor to Christian Dotremont. The first volume in a three part series (that will ultimately showcase 220 minutes of rare Surrealist documents), this release covers the years 1917-1926. Includes the crazy lecture by James Ensor in 1929, as well as many testimonies concerning the Dadaist Clement Pansaers by his own son, Louis Aragon, Philippe Soupault, Pierre Bourgeois, Pascal Pia, and so on. This release also features Paul Neuhuys addressing the foundation of "ca ira" (Henri Michaux' publishers among others), poetry by Franz Hellens, early memories of Henri Michaux and Camille Goemans by Robert Guiette, and Jean-Pierre Verheggen reading Henri Michaux. Also contains material concerning the 1924-1926 Correspondance Groupe (a parallel movement to French Surrealism) with direct testimonies from Paul Nouge, Camille Goemans, Marcel Lecomte, Andre Souris, Paul Hooreman as well as the opinion of Salvador Dali concerning Camille Goemans and Paul Nouge. This is a hardcore historical spoken word document, in the native language known as French. It's the original voices, recorded many years ago (this volume features material recorded 1917-1926, published in audio form for the first time).

EXPLODING STAR ORCHESTRA - We Are All From Somewhere Else (Thrill Jockey 181; USA) "We Are All From Somewhere Else is comprised of 3 distinct sections, and corresponds to a story involving an exploding star, cosmic transformation, a sting ray, the travels of the sting ray, intelligent conversations with electric eels, the destructive power of humans, the death and ascension of the sting ray, the transformation of sting ray ghost to flying bird, and the transformation of bird to phoenix to rocket to flying burning matter to a new-born star. The overall organic approach included actual organic sounds -- for example, the sounds of electric eels recorded by Mazurek at INPA research laboratory in Manaus. The juxtaposition of two drums, two basses, two mallets, multiple flutes, two coronets, bass clarinet, ARP synthesizer, guitar, trombone, voices and flugelhorn all played important roles in the development of the final sound. Group is led by Rob Mazurek (Chicago Underground, Isotope 217), and includes Nicole Mitchell (Frequency, Black Earth Ensemble), John, Johnny and Jeff from Tortoise, and a number of other prominent Chicago improvisers."

ARBOURETUM - Rites of Uncovering (Thrill Jockey 180; USA) "An album of broad scope, musically, lyrically and texturally. The name alludes to a process of constant questing that is part of Arbouretum's raison d'etre, what Heumann describes as 'a sense of religiosity that is not tied down to a particular moral or ecclesiastical approach, but rather proto-religious feelings such as awe in the face of something greater.' In this case, that 'something greater' is the music itself and/or the source thereof. Rites... was influenced either obtusely or more directly (as in the song 'Mohammed's Hex and Bounty,' based on 'Love with a Few Hairs' by Mohamed Mrabet) by the writer Paul Bowles. Band is led by Dave Heumann (Anomoanon); musicians on the album include Mitchell Feldstein (Lungfish) and David Bergander (Celebration)."

ARCHIVAL REISSUES AND RESTOCKS
CHRISTIAN FENNESZ - Endless Summer: 2007 Remixed & Expanded edition (Editions Mego 035; Austria) 2007 edition with new cover. This reissue of Christian Fennesz's breakthrough classic Endless Summer has been remixed, remastered, and re-released with two extra tracks. Originally released in 2001 by Mego, Endless Summer brought his name and music towards the first steps of mainstream recognition with its micro sounds and warm guitar, harkening the dreamy serenity and quick-fading sentimentality of a California sunset. Following on from the more experimental Hotel Paral.lell and the Beach Boys homaged Plays single, Endless Summer brought the guitars more to the front, the electronics shimmered more, and the melodies shined more brightly. It went on to be a classic of its time, topping many end of year polls. This new definitive edition is newly mixed by Fennesz, resulting in a more open-sounding version of the tracks, especially the marimba driven "Caecilia" and the hypnotic "Before I Leave," and the towering "Happy Audio." It is also re-mastered by Denis Blackham at Skye, and has beautifully photographed artwork by Jon Wozencroft. In addition to the original 8 tracks, it contains 2 extra titles: "Badminton Girl," originally released in 2001 as part of the Split Series #15 12" with Main on Fat Cat Records, now out of print, and "Endless," which is previously unreleased until now.

DEATHPROD - Deathprod [4 CD Box set] (Rune Grammofon 2036; EEC) One of the most acclaimed releases of 2004 has been repressed! Includes the Deathprod album 'Morals And Dogma' (which is also available separately), plus 3 box-exclusive albums: Reference Frequencies, Treetop Drive, Imaginary Songs From Tristan de Cunha, with a 32 page of liner notes, all eloquently designed by Kim Hiorthoy.
"Deathprod: the invented word no longer has a single fixed meaning. Instead it's suggestive of last and first things, physical decay and the processes of production, decomposition and composition, the breaking down of sound that precedes fresh musical creation. These four CDs document Deathprod music from 1991 to 2001, a decade of stylistic consolidation rather than change. The 'Reference Frequencies' series of nine live electronic improvisations was made in 1991, recorded to cassette using unpromisingly basic electronic equipment. The four released here for the first time have rawness that is softened or refined in the later composed work but the essential qualities are in place: fascination with the physical properties of sound and awareness of the unfamiliar spaces and uncharted expanses that organized sound can disclose. Loops mysteriously slide from the groove of repetition into swirling forms and cryptic atmospheres. Layers thicken, some congeal and sink as others thin and evaporate in glistening spray. Figures stalk through clouds; strange topographies form from molten matter then dissolve in crystalline streams; curious stories in remote languages cry out to be deciphered. At the pulsing heart of this gelling and melting, amidst the turbulence of changing states and the ethereal drift, Deathprod works unostentatiously with his unspectacular electronic hardware."

KLAUS SCHULZE - Timewind: Expanded Version [2 CD set] (Inside Out/ Revisited 70; Germany) This expanded edition contains a 56 minute bonus disc with 3 unreleased cuts from the sessions! Dedicated to Richard Wagner, Timewind is a 60-minute electronic expedition that is broken up into two half-hour tracks, "Bayreuth Return" and "Wahnfried 1883." The first 30 minutes involves icy pulsations and lengthy tonal flights that unnoticeably converge into each other. While one rhythm gains momentum, the other one slowly fades into a bubbly electronic bath of bright swirls and meandering keyboard waves. Similar to early Tangerine Dream, the music here rises and falls above a distant sonic horizon, and the effect is truly mesmerizing. One specific flow can last for minutes, while small, detailed noises adhere themselves to the main electronic run. On the second track, more of the same far-off synthesized altering takes place, but the washes of keyboard become inoculated with a sharper, more precise sound. Longer notes build into resilient pieces with the same comforting result. This album will sketch a barren wasteland in the mind through the wispiness of the wind-like effects. Timewind serves as splendid mood music, and the ears are forever kept busy following Schulze's electronic wandering. ~ Mike DeGagne, AMG

MATERIAL [BILL LASWELL With MICHAEL BEINHORN/ARCHIE SHEPP/NILE RODGERS/WHITNEY HOUSTON/NONA HENDRYX/OLIVER LAKE/YOGI HORTON] - One Down (Movie Gold; EEC) [note to collectors: this has new cover artwork, not the original cover] Bill Laswell's genre-hopping group's 2nd album from 1982 was an avant disco/funk record, incidentally the recording debut of Whitney Houston, who sings a Soft Machine tune 'Memories' with sax solos by Archie Shepp [originally sung by Robert Wyatt and written by Hugh Hopper]!! Where else could you find such stellar talent as Fred Frith, Nile Rodgers, Nicky Skopelitis, Yogi Horton, Oliver Lake, Fred Maher, Daniel Ponce, Bernard Fowler et al rubbing shoulders? And watch out for the infectious over-the-top guitar solo by Ronnie Drayton on the CD bonus cut, the 9 minute 12"-only 'Busting Out' with killer Nona Hendryx vocals!

FOLKE RABE - What?? (Dexter's Cigar 012; USA) Restocked. Fantastic reissue of obscure Swedish sine-wave drone/electronics; so desirable of a release that I'm almost willing to forgive Grubbs & O'Rourke for those assaholic Squirrel Bait atrocities! Includes a previously unreleased half-speed version for 76 full minutes of sound, a harmonically pure minimalist classic of subtle shiftage and its infinite possibilities. "First issued in 1970 by the German label Wergo, 'What??' (as we would call it here in America) was obscure even among the avant company it kept in; label-mates such as Stockhausen, Ligeti and Cage overshadowed Rabe from the start." Rabe: "About 85% of the material is made up of electronically generated tones, which however are never present in their static, original form. Each partial has been specifically treated in itself, which can at times yield a very rich result. What?? was created in the late summer of 1967, and was realized by me in the electronic studio of the Swedish Radio...the second What?? is the same as the first, but at half-speed, ie. one octave lower. This may seem a lousy way to fill up a CD, but in fact through the years I have been using both versions in performances. With the kind of sound material used in 'What??', it does not simply sound half-speed. In a way it becomes another piece of music -- mellower, and the single events of course easier to distinguish."
