But First a Quick Announcement:

HENRY KAISER COMES TO NYC FOR A RARE VISIT, DOING TWO GIGS:

Friday January 27th at 1pm in The Apple Store - 103 Prince St. in Soho
Guitarist and research diver Henry Kaiser joins us to share exciting work captured while exploring the Antarctic. Henry will discuss how his PowerBook is essential in both his scientific and creative endeavors.

And then:

On Saturday, January 28th at 8 PM

Loren Connors and Henry Kaiser will play in a guitar duet with a silent film -- excerpts from Teinosuke Kinugasa's "A Page of Madness" (Kurutta Ippeiji, 1926). The film offers a fragmented portrait of an insane asylum. It is regarded as one of the finest examples of early international experimental cinema.
Then acoustic steel-string guitarist and composer Alex de Grassi will perform his original score for A Story of Floating Weeds (Ukigusa Monogatari, 1934) by director Yasujiro Ozu. He will play a few one-of-a-kind guitars, including a 39-string "Flying Dream" instrument that incorporates sympathetic strings (strings that resonate not by being plucked or bowed, but by their proximity to other strings) and extended bass and treble harp strings.

FIVE INCREDIBLE NEW RELEASES ON THE 'LEO' LABEL...

ANTHONY BRAXTON With The CREATIVE JAZZ ORCHESTRA - Compositions 175 & 126 (for Four Vocalists And Constructed Environment) [2 CD Set] (Leo 453/454; UK) Recorded in 1994 by the 23-piece Creative Jazz Orchestra, Anthony Braxton considers these two compositions to be one of his most important works. They might be called Anthony Braxton's operas and twenty-page booklet gives full librettos of both. Although the orchestra in question is called Creative Jazz Orchestra the music is much closer to classical/academic avant-garde than to jazz. The scope of Braxton's vision is really amazing, and this double CD is absolutely necessary addition to the collections of Braxton's devotees.
2 CD set for $28

SUN RA & His SPACE ARKESTRA - What Planet Is This? [2 CD set] (Leo GY 024/025; UK) Recorded in 1973, when Sun Ra and the Arkestra was going through a very creativel period in their music, this double CD is just the first volume from the Sun Ra Waitawhile archives. The line-up of the Arkestra counts 25 musicians including Sun Ra and for once we are not going to hear some critical remarks about the poor sound because the quality of the recording is superb. The length of the recording is almost two hours and the Arkestra plays original Sun Ra compositions and untitled improvisations, one of which is almost 30 minutes long. A must for any Sun Ra fan.
2 CD set for $30

IVO PERELMAN With ROSIE HERTLEIN/DOMINIC DUVAL/NEWMAN BAKER - Introspection (Leo 455; UK) "Ivo Perelman continues his sonic exploration with string instruments as started on 'Sieiro' (with cellist Thomas Ulrich) and followed by the 'Alexander Suite' (with CT String Quartet). Here he is joined by sympathetic violin player/singer Rosie Hertlein and reaches a new plateau of his chameleonic understanding for string sonorities. Superbly fueled by Dominic Duval (bass) and Newman Taylor-Baker (drums), the music - at times sounding like an intricate contemporary string trio or a powerful jazz quartet - echoes the depth and introspection of Perelman's own work as a visual artist. Includes booklet with 9 beautiful reproductions of his paintings."
CD $17

PHIL MINTON/ROGER TURNER - Ammo (Leo GY 022; UK) This recording was released in 1984 as an LP with the same title and was unavailable for fifteen odd years. In artistic terms, it was a shocking statement from Phil Minton and Roger Turner which scared a lot of people. Now, twenty-two years later, the recording sounds as if it has been recorded to-day. It has not lost any of its artistic qualities and stood the test of time. A work of great originality and integrity.
CD $18

FRANCOIS CARRIER With MAT MANERI/UWE NEUMANN/PIERRE COTE/MICHEL LAMBERT - Happening [2 CD Set] (Leo 451/452; UK) "This is the first (double) CD by Francois Carrier in Leo Records catalogue. He is one of Quebec's (and Canada's) essential musical voices, a saxophonist who has combined commitment and discipline with intuition and inspiration to gradually realize an arresting musical vision, one that is compounded of free-jazz traditions and a compellingly personal melodic invention. On Happening, Carrier combines both long-standing and fresh musical partnerships with free improvisation and contrasting tonal systems to reach levels of sometimes startling immediacy." -Stuart Broomer

IT'S FINALLY HERE Ð IN STOCK!!!

ANNETTE PEACOCK - 31:31 [signed/#'d edition] (Ironic US) Just in time for New Year's Day 2006 - Annette's all-new album - that we've been waiting five years for since her last recording released by ECM!!!
"Conceived to be played in your car environment - from the first struck guitar chord, when you turn the key to start-up. Imagine an eccentrically smooth ride of song feels - arranged for layers of synths and horns, vocals, guitars, bass & drums, percussion - from this enigmatic artist whose avant-garde contributions to the disparate genres of jazz, rap, r&r, prog-rock, electroacoustic, the use of synthesizers - have identified her as a truly radical and existential presence."
This premier album for the ironic U.S. series is available now ONLY as an edition dressed in an original jacket artifact, signed & numbered by Ms. Peacock.

"OK, I've listened to this several times in the first few days since receiving it. In some ways it seems to continue the thread of songwriting development found on Abstract Contact, but in other ways it also shows a two decade fast forward. I must say that in some places the cheesy-slick synthboard parts would be unlistenable IF this were anybody else's record, but put in Annette's Voice & Lyrics, and a striking new balance is found that opens your eyes, and makes wondrous foreign terrain out of the familiar, something her work has ALWAYS done, and only a precious handful of songsters have ever achieved when working in the 'ironic' [familiar] mode. Like Dylan, who has maintained that he cannot comment on his 'lyrics' or 'music' or vocal interpretation as separate entities, but that they mean something united as a whole that none of the parts suggest alone.
And yes, in this day of CD-length expectations, we've forgotten that a shorter program would put us in thrall back in the days of the LP [the title is what you think it is]. As hopefully any five-year-old should be able to tell you [somebody find me a five-year-old!], Quantity Is Not Quality! Is the Quality here? YES!! All THUMBS UP!" - MannyLunch

ANNETTE PEACOCK - I Have No Feelings (Ironic 04; UK) A highly personal album from 1985, with Annette doing virtually everything - singing, keyboards, bass, and other sundry devices - accompanied only by Roger Turner on percussion.
[the CD edition of this SOLD OUT over 15 years ago; these are the last rare LP copies in Ms. Peacock's possession]
LP $30

Ms. Peacock, for those of you who aren't vivacious fossils like BLG and MannyLunch, spent her teenage years touring with then-husband Gary Peacock whilst he played with Albert Ayler, wrote the bulk of Paul Bley's signature piano repertoire [as did Carla Bley, Paul's first wife, before her], organized and sang [through synths!] the first performing free-jazz-synth ensemble with Bley and Han Bennink - and that's all before she started her official** solo recording career in 1972 with 'I'm The One' on David Bowie's Mainman label! Later sessions in the '70s and '80s - including those for Annette's own 'Ironic' label - would find her collaborating with many legendary jazz, free, and rock, musicians.
**['Revenge' on Polydor, recorded the year before 'I'm The One', should really be considered her first solo album - It was released under the name "Bley-Peacock Synthesizer Show" only due to contractual difficulties]

LEROY JENKINS' DRIFTWOOD - The Art Of Improvisation (Mutable 17523) Featuring Leroy Jenkins on violin, Min Xiao-Fen on pipa, Denman Maroney on piano and Rich O'Donnell on percussion. Leroy Jenkins remains the most distinctive modern violinist we have and appears to work hard at each and every project he is involved with. His new quartet, Driftwood, is again a completely unique band of gifted improvisers. Denman Maroney plays what is known as 'hyper-piano' by playing often inside the piano with bowls and other objects. Min Xiao-Fen has become the most in-demand and adventurous pipa player, since moving here during the nineties. I can't say that I was familiar with the percussionist here, Mr. O'Donnell, but he fits perfectly in this marvelous quartet. Each of the four pieces is part of "The Art of Improvisation" suite. "To Live" or the first part has the pipa and violin swirling around one another as piano and percussion also swirl intricately below with delicate precision. The interplay between all four musicians has that edge-of-your-seat mesmerizing quality. On "To Sing", as Denman plucks, bends mutes string inside the piano he also plays the keyboard balancing the two approaches just right, creating strong suspense. Leroy then adds an eerie vibe by bending his strings, creating harmonics and letting his notes drift in the air like feathers falling through the air. Both Rich and Min take incredible unaccompanied solos here as well. The quartet erupts on "To Run", with all four players sailing and spiraling layers on lines together. Very intense. Finally, on the last piece, "To Believe", they slow down to a more cautious pace and explore more freely together with sublime results. Well worth the long wait since it was delayed a bit and advertised last month. - BLG

NEW ON INTAKT ...

JACQUES DEMIERRE/BARRY GUY/LUCAS NIGGLI - Brainforest (Intakt 107; Switzerland) Featuring Jacques Demierre on piano, Barry Guy on contrabass and Lucas Niggli on drums. This Intakt all-star piano trio is just incredible. Swiss pianist, Jacques Demierre, is another of those unsung heroes of piano exploration that puts him in a category of his own. Whether he plays solo, or a duo with Sylvie Courvoisier or in a trio with Urs Leimgruber & Barre Phillips, he is an extraordinary pianist. Barry Guy is perhaps many folks favorite contrabassist on this planet, so we need say anymore about his stellar credentials. Drum wiz, Lucas Niggli, has five fine discs out on Intakt as a leader, a duo disc on Creative Works and is part of a one-time sextet with Fred Frith & Peter Kowald on Unit.
Right from the first sound, we know we are in for something quite special as the trio launches in some magical improvisations. Superbly recorded and balanced so that it feels as if we are sitting inside the trio as they create a cosmic dream-world around us. Lucas sounds as he is playing with mallets or maybe something even lighter. Although this was recorded live at two different clubs in November of 2004, it often sounds more like studio date. On the title track, there is superb balance of different textures, as the piano slows down as speeds up into dense waves, Lucas focuses in on quick-spinning cymbals and thick reverberations on the bass down below from Barry. The epic-length "Whalebalance" is in incredible tour-de-force that moves through organic sections. It starts mysterious and slowly builds through hills and valleys of breathtaking sounds. It gets so dense that I thought as though my speakers were about to explode. Too much. Extraordinary music for extra-special times. - BLG

ZENTRALQUARTETT (CONRAD BAUER/ULRICH GUMPERT/ERNST LUDWIG PETROWSKY/GUNTER SOMMER) - 11 SONGS: AUS TEUTSCHEN LANDEN (Intakt 113; Switzerland) This is the fourth fabulous disc by the great Zentral-quartett, another Intakt all-star unit featuring Connie Bauer on trombone, Ulrich Gumpert on piano, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky on alto sax, flutes & clarinet and Gunter Sommer on drums & percussion. On this eclectic disc, the quartet perform mostly traditional German songs and twists them into all sorts of odd shapes. Some of these songs go back as far as the 1500's, while a number of them are from the 1800's. Even the two songs composed by Mr. Gumpert have that traditional sort of sound, yet they blend their humorous approach with a fine free midsection. What I really love about this is that they have chosen some truly fine and quite silly tunes and have stretched them into more interesting pieces with shrewd arrangements and inspired solos. The goofy melody on "Es fiel ein Reif" reminds me more of a Native American type of theme, so I get the feeling that certain melodies are universal in nature. When you least expect it, the quartet move into some incredible Euro freer areas, then back to those charming little tunes. This is a wonderful and much-needed change of pace from the more serious discs that I often tend to review. So my friends, raise a stein of your favorite German beer to the fun-filled, creative hijinks of the Zentralquartett! - BLG

FRED FRITH/CARLA KIHLSTEDT/STEVIE WISHART - The Compass, Log And Lead (Intakt 103; Switzerland) An immensely enchanting, mostly acoustic trio featuring Fred Frith on acoustic guitar, lowry organ & violin, Carla Kihlstedt on violin & nyckelharpa and Stevie Wishart on hurdy-gurdy, electronics and violin. Fred Frith paints wonderful colors on his acoustic guitar, while Carla Kihlstedt (Two Foot Yard, Tin Hat Trio & Sleepytime Gorilla Museum) plays violin and the nyckelharpa, a Swedish folk instrument and Steve Wishart (Machine for Making Sense from Australia) has turned the hurdy-gurdy into a modern instrument. For one of Fred Frith's strengths has always been to tie together unbelievably beautiful folk harmonies with free improvisation, something already heard in his band Skeleton Crew or in the soundtrack to the film 'Step Across the Border'. This is also the strength of this trio
"The music on this record is improvised. What we bring to each performance is who we are and all that we have learned so far. None of us is involved exclusively with improvisation. We each have experience playing composed music our own and other peoples and we're involved in a wide range of other musical activities. We write songs, use electronics, work in recording studios, collaborate with artists from other disciplines, compose scores, and much else besides. For us, improvising is the sum of our personal musical histories intertwined, a place where we can meet on equal terms and discover things we never knew, or hear what we thought we knew in a new light. It's a conversation, an exchange. There are no rules, other than to listen well and act accordingly." -Fred Frith, 2005

JOHN McNEIL - East Coast Cool (Omnitone 15211) Featuring John McNeil on trumpet & most compositions, Allan Chase on baritone sax, John Hebert on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. This classic quartet date was inspired by Gerry Mulligan's influential quartet with Chet Baker from the mid-fifties, yet brought up to date some fifty years later. I was surprised and quite glad to see this fine disc reviewed at length in the NY Times last month by Ben Ratliff, who a fine job of describing what is so special about this date. I was also glad to hear Allan Chase once again, who I fondly remember from his days on alto sax with Prima Materia, that swell Trane & Ayler tribute band with Rashied Ali and Louie Belogenis. I believe that Allan has since mved up to Boston where he teaches.
This is one mighty fine quartet, On the opener, "Deadline", the rhythm team is constantly shifting tempos as the bari sax and trumpet sail above tightly and take strong slow-burning solos. Chase's warm, glowing tone is featured on "A Time To Go", and both horns again take splendid laid back and lyrical solos. West Coast standard, "Bernie's Tune", sounds as if it is about to come apart time and again, yet again the superb rhythm team do an incredible job of shifting dynamics and tempos throughout, with a few great short drum solos interspersed within the song structure and quick, tight horn solos. I dig the way the drums create this building up of tension on "Delusions", as the horns go in the opposite direction, an oddly structured tune that connects some unexpected parts in a novel way. With no pianist in attendance, this pushes the bass and drums to be especially sharp and creative in the way they hold things together and John Hebert and Matt Wilson do an excellent job throughout. Too marvelous for words; no, just enough. - BLG

BEN MONDER/CHRIS GESTRIN/DYLAN VAN DER SCHYFF - The Distance [H-SACD] (Songlines 1557; Canada) Featuring Ben Monder on electric guitar, Chris Gestrin on piano & prepared piano and Dylan Van Der Schyff on drums. This is obviously a democratic trio with no leader as each musician contributes to the compositions. Ben Monder has slowly become many folks favorite guitarist from NY over the past decade, appearing on some 25 discs with leaders like Paul Motian, Bill McHenry, Dave Binney & Greald Cleaver, as well as his collaborations with Theo Bleckman and four fine dates as a leader. The equally in-demand drummer, Dylan Van Der Schyff, is also on about as many discs as Ben, working with Dave Douglas, John Butcher, Francois Houle, Wayne Horvitz & John Wolf Brennan. Both pianist Chris Gestrin and Dylan hail from Vancouver, but this appears to be only Chris' second disc (for Songlines).
'The Distance' was recorded live the Western Front in Vancouver in June of 2005. From the opening guitar and piano duo, "Ferus" which has a hushed, dreamy quality to Dylan's "Treacle", where the trio plays layers of muted lines together. One of the things that Monder does so well is the way he lets his notes swirl hypnotically, often haunting and hushed. On "#47", the trio play ever so softly and subtly, a melodic dream sequence that evolves so gracefully. "Dark Engine" is an amazing duo with that great Bill Frisell-like crunchy guitar and incredible Joey Baronesque drums. Chris sounds superb on "View from the Road" playing exquisitely inside the piano as Dylan hit those low, deep notes on what sounds like a tympani. The title track was composed by Gestrin and it is a lovely song, quite enchanting. This is indeed a strong trio, sometimes cerebral, sometimes cinematic and often fascinating. - BLG
CD $17

QUINSIN NACHOFF With MARK HELIAS/JIM BLACK & STRING QUARTET - Magic Numbers [H-SACD] (Songlines 1556; Canada) Featuring Quinsin Nachoff on tenor & soprano saxes & compositions, Mark Helias on contrabass and Jim Black on drums plus a string quartet with Nathalie Bonin & Noemi Racine Gaudreault on violins, Jean Rene on viola and Julie Trudeau on cello. This is quite an impressive debut disc from Vancouver-based saxist Quinsin Nachoff and his NY rhythm team and a fine string quartet. Considering that I was completely unfamiliar with Mr. Nachof before this, I am even more amazed by ambitious ideas and writing. On each of the eight pieces, Quinsin sets up different tactics, grooves or structures for the sax-led trio and string quartet to navigate through. The string quartet is an integral part of the proceedings, often playing their parts as the trio tightly connects with them. Quinsin's bittersweet tone works well with string quartet that often starts off or continues the phrases that the sax exhales. What is most interesting about this is that it is very hard to define, being in between established categories of jazz and modern classical. There are elements of short somewhat funky grooves interspersed with some further out string sections. It is difficult to combine these extremes without sounding forced, but the entire group does a great job of making it flow together. We received this promo more than a month before we got in copies to sell, so I played it a few times and always met with good response from customers in the store who knew that this was something unique and successful. Another unexpected gem from the consistently superb Songlines folks. - BLG

TONY CONRAD - Fantastic Glissando (Table of Elements 82; USA) "It's 1969, and Tony Conrad wants to take you Higher. Celebrated for the thrilling roar of his amplified violin, Conrad is a founding father of 'minimalism' and a giant in the American soundscape. Now Conrad's own Audio ArtKive imprint presents the first in a series of releases that reveal the wild breadth of his 40-year career, including field recordings, piano compositions, film soundtracks and more. Fantastic Glissando (1969) is a series of (d)evolving electronic compositions created with sine-wave oscillators. The instrumentation is different, but the effect is typical Conrad: soaring, aggressively textured and jet-engine massive."

DON'T BLINK! A SHORT-TIME SALE ON MICHEL BRAAM'S 'BIK BENT BRAAM' [BBB] LABEL
Usually $19 for singles, and $27 for doubles - NOW $16 and $23

TRIO BRAAMDEJOODEVATCHER [MICHIEL BRAAM/WILBERT DeJOODE/MICHAEL VATCHER] - Change This Song (BBB 8; Netherlands) Just received! Featuring Michiel Braam on piano & compositions, Wilbert de Joode on double bass and Michael Vatcher on drums. This was recorded live at The Bimhuis in Amsterdam in February and October of 2005. An extraordinary and most creative modern jazz piano trio that sound unlike anyone else. They do sound like they are taking the angular music of Monk and turning it inside out. They play both tight and loose at the same time, speeding up and slowing down simultaneously, yet consistently working together as one. Even the bassist solos, which he does often and quite well, the piano and drums spin around him in tight web of activity. What is most amazing here is the way these pieces moves in unexpected directions and involve strange structures or devices that connect them. Familiar themes all of sudden transmute into something completely different. Although Mr. Braam has written all of the pieces, the trio is perfectly balanced and each member integral to the overall sound. The great bassist, Wilbert de Joode, is often at the center of many of the tunes, holding it down, pinching those strings and plucking those melodies with resourcefulness and taste, often as the piano and percussion play skeletally around him. A marvel of invention and creative spirit throughout. - BLG

ALL EARS SEXTET [MICHIEL BRAAM/HERB ROBERTSON/FRANK GRATKOWSKI] - Foamy Wife Hum/Line [2 CD set] (BBB 3/4; Netherlands) Featuring Herb on trumpets, Frank Gratkowski on alto sax & clarinet, Frans Vermeerssen on tenor sax, Michiel Braam on piano, Wilbert de Joode on bass and Michael Vatcher on drums. Actually, Mr. Braam seems to be the leader here, having written all the pieces on one of these discs with Mr. Vermeerssen having written all the tunes from the other disc. Since I know little of both of these Dutch cats, I figured you might grab this great disc quicker if you are as big a Herb Robertson fan as I am. This was recorded live at three locations in Amsterdam, Groningen and Cologne, Germany in March of 2003. Michiel is an exceptional pianist as well as a strong composer and has at least five other releases out on other Amsterdam-based labels. ICP-like in the humor department, the sextet go back and forth between some occasional silly ragtime like sections with freer moments thrown in, yet they remain tight and focused throughout. All the pieces are connected and suite-like with amazing playing from all six members. Everyone gets ample chances to solo and push the band in different directions. Bassist Wilbert de Joode sounds especially inspired throughout, in a blindfold test, I would think that he is the leader, since he seems to leading the band in many different sections. Gotta admit that this treasure is pretty f**king amazing throughout, on all counts. - BLG

BIK BENT BRAAM [MICHIEL BRAAM] - Growing Pains [2 CD set] (BBB 6/7; Netherlands) Featuring: Jan Willem van der Ham - altosax, bassoon; Bart van der Putten - altosax, clarinet; Frans Vermeerssen - tenorsax, baritonsax; Frank Gratkowski - altosax, clarinet, basscl.; Angelo Verploegen - trumpet; Eric Boeren - cornet; Hans Sparla - trombone; Wolter Wierbos - trombone; Peter Haex - tenortuba, trombone; Patrick Votrian - basstuba; Michiel Braam - piano; Wilbert De Joode - double bass; Joop van Erven - drums

MICHIEL BRAAM - Michiel vs Braam: Solo (BBB 5; Netherlands) Solo versions of previously released material with lead sheets included. This was recorded at the Loft in Cologne, Germany in February of 2004. Mr. Braam is quite a gifted and diverse pianist. I caught his small ensemble at The Stone last year and was blown away by their wonderful set. Braam has three double discs on Bvhaast, as well as another five or so on his own BBB label. His playing is a unique blend of many different influences and approaches. Sometimes playful, sometimes serious sounding. On "Light Chromatics", he plays a series of dark chords on the low end of the piano, as his right hand double up the same dark haunting notes, then rushes forward with the intensity turned up. Michiel often sounds as if he influenced by stride pianists as well as Duke Ellington and Monk, with way he pumps his left hand, rocking those great bass-lines as his right hand sail across the rest of the piano keyboard. Each piece explores a different theme and/or approach. From elegance to rollicking to sparseness to the blues, from quiet to explosive sections, we never know which direction or combination of ideas will be explored. I like the 16-minute "Ballet", which wanders through a variety of sections and deals with the scenery as it evolves through a story-like drama. Michiel Braam is an outstanding pianist who deserves some recognition for his efforts. Solo piano records as good as this one is pretty rare. - BLG

And also from the Netherlands...

DE JONGENS DRIEST [JOOP VAN DER LINDEN/ARNO BAKKER/JANFIE VAN STRIEN] - III (Rare 48; EEC) This is a fine Dutch brass trio featuring Joop van der Linden on trombone, Janfie van Strien on soprano sax and Arno Bakker on sousaphone. This week, a woman who manages Michiel Braam's Bik Brent Braam and a sousaphone player named Arno Bakker came to town to attend some sort of convention. Both stopped by DMG and left us with some great discs. Arno is a member of De Jongens Driest and he gave us two of their CDs. This brass trio claims to be influenced by various musics from around the world and listens to a wealth of influences like Zappa, Miles, Roland Kirk, Stravinsky, Willie Colon and Duke Ellington. The trio writes most of their own music and do sound as if they've heard music from all over. The sousaphone is a large tuba-like instrument and Arno often plays the bass lines with it, quite different a nd challenging on each tune. The trio does a couple of covers. One is "While the Lady Sleeps", which was also covered by Coltrane on an early Prestige record. It features some fine soprano sax that blends just right with the trombone, although they are in opposite registers. I like this music combines a strong sense of humor with a sense of adventure. The English liner notes includes stories about each song that are often either funny or at least illuminating. The tune they cover is a charming version of Mickey Katz's "Grandma's Draidel", a wonderful, sort or klez classic, so you they have good taste. A delightful diversion from three Dutch folks that I hadn't heard of until this week. - BLG

DE JONGENS DRIEST [JOOP VAN DER LINDEN/ARNO BAKKER/JANFIE VAN STRIEN] With MICHAEL VATCHER - Live In Leer (Rare 44; EEC) This is a fine Dutch brass trio featuring Joop van der Linden on trombone, Arno Bakker on sousaphone, Janfie van Strien on soprano & tenor sax and Michael Vatcher on drums. Although I was completely unfamiliar with all three members of this brass trio, we know their guest, Michael Vatcher quite well. Vatcher is a most creative American-born percussionist who has been living in Amsterdam for many years. He's played with everyone from Zorn ('Spy Vs. Spy') to Maarten Altena to Tom Cora's The Roof and Four Walls, as well as Jewels & Binoculars, that great Dylan tribute trio with Michael Moore & Lindsay Horner. 'Live in Leer' was recorded live in Germany in September of 2002. The quartet play half originals and half covers by Mickey Katz, Luis Bonfa and some folks named Malgoni and Bregovic. The do versions of three pieces from the above reviewed disc ("III"), with Vatcher adding his unique percussive voice to the brew. On the cover Vatcher is just playing two drums and one cymbal, since he the type of drummer that doesn't need an entire kit to completely musical. The music has a fine, delirious, uplifting quality and groove. The vibe/sound is often Eastern European with a healthy dose of klez influence and a wacky sense of humor. Vatcher's infectious, nimble and immensely spirited percussion is often at the center of many of these tunes, his solos joyous in execution. Their cover of Mickey Katz's "Mazzeltof Dances" is charming with both the soprano and trombone inter-twining in a heart-warming klez-like dance. The speed up and add some zest to Luis Bonfa's "Samba D'Orfeo", turning corn into something more digestible. The thing is that you know these dudes are having a blast as is the audience at the gig, so why not you and me, as well?!? - BLG

PHILIP GLASS - Symphony No. 6: Plutonian Ode [2 CD set] (Orange Mountain 20) This gem was co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and Brucknerhaus Linz to celebrate the composer's 65th birthday. The work's libretto was written by his late friend, Allen Ginsberg. Glass explains, 'During the last ten years of Allen's life we had performed frequently together in poetry/music collaborations. Allen was a superb reader of his own work and I was often inspired to compose new piano music for these occasional collaborations. In the case of Hydrogen Jukebox, we developed an evening length opera which was designed by Jerome Sirlin and directed by Ann Carlson. We presented that work in over 30 cities as part of an international tour. It had been our plan to make a new, major collaboration based on his epic poem Plutonium Ode (1978). Before he died in 1997, Allen had made several recordings for me of the poem in preparation for the new work. At that time I had in mind simply an extended piano work to accompany Allen in live performance. I put aside the project in 1997, feeling that I wouldn't want to go ahead without Allen. A few years past and the commission of a new symphony from Carnegie Hall and the Brucknerhaus Linz reawakened my interest in the project. I felt, then, that Plutonium Ode was unfinished business between Allen and myself and this would be the opportunity to complete it. By then, the piano music I had originally imagined had grown to a full orchestra and Allen's resonant speaking voice to a lyric soprano. The three movements of the symphony follow the three parts of the poem, and follow, also, the passage of the poem - the first movement is a passionate outcry against nuclear contamination and pollution, the second a turn towards healing, and the final movement an epiphany arrived at through personal transformation.' This new world-premiere recording from Orange Mountain, performed by soprano Lauren Flanigan accompanied by the Bruckner Orchester Linz conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, brings this powerful work to life. As a special bonus, the set includes a disc of Allen Ginsburg reading the original poem."

KAZUKI TOMOKAWA - Live 2005 Banana Hall Osaka (PSF 8022; Japan) "Kazuki Tomokawa's gigs are now a lot less frequent than they used to be, and his August 2005 Osaka date was his first in Kansai for quite some time. But accompanied by his long-time trio of Toshi Ishizuka on percussion and Masato Nagahata on piano, this was, in Tomokawa's own estimation, the best gig that this trio has ever played. It was far too good a performance to be left to fading memories, and Tomokawa himself talked PSF into releasing it. Sixteen tracks of his patented soul-folk, emotionally charged and devastating as all hell."

REVIEWS OF RECENT GEMS FROM MICHAEL A. PARKER AND BRUCE LEE GALLANTER:

ZAAR (Cuneiform Rune 224) From Bordeaux, France comes the new project of brothers Yan and Michael Hazera, the guitar and drumkit core of Sotos, a drumkit/bass guitar/guitar/violin/cello quintet that released two classics (1998's self-titled disc on Gazul and 2002's Platypus on Cuneiform) of instrumental avant-rock in the vein of Univers Zero, Magma, Miriodor, Xaal, Nebelnest, etc. Zaar is a quartet completed by hurdy gurdy and bass guitar/contrabass. While retaining the basic jagged and jabbing rhythms, phrasal clarity, cellular repetition, and extended forms of Sotos, this disc moves slightly towards a spacy, krautrock sound and the slow, icy passages with contrabass take on an atmospheric jazz feeling instead of the artokian prickles of Sotos' otherwise similar passages. The album is capped off by a short Present-styled barnstormer worthy of any mental mosh pit and there are a few other passages of aggressive Magmoid and Nebelnested frenzy with jackhammer bass guitar and asymmetrical drumkit attacks, but this is primarily a music requiring the patience to savor simple gestures placed in bold geometric blocks forming a gently sloping staircase leading to the brief visceral climaxes. The sparse, austere sound of King Crimson's improvisations in the Starless and Bible Black period permeates the disc. For a few precious minutes (in "Zolg" and "Ce n'est pas triste"), the jagged interlocking parts between drumkit and clean, crisp acoustic guitar sound inspired by Cheval de Frise (also from Bordeaux), though without the breathtaking intricacy of that revered erstwhile duo. The hurdy gurdy is used more texturally than the riffing violin and cello of Sotos and isn't distinctive as one might expect, mostly sounding either like an electric violin or an analog synth. Part and parcel to the structural focus on carefully woven ensemble themes instead of solos, it's also not placed in the foreground except for three short soloistic passages: the uncharacteristic acid-damaged shredding that opens the disc, the electronic-sounding freakout in the climax of "Sefir", and the gorgeous, languid, mystical-folk excursion in the middle of "Omk", the latter being the sole passage to nurse the instrument's characteristic sound. Brilliantly conceived and executed, this is a blissful, transportative experience from the 20-minute opening epic to the 92-second minimal acoustic guitar outro. - Michael Anton Parker

AHLEUCHATISTAS - What You Will (Cuneiform Rune 221) You watch a video tape of a ballet dancer played at 5x speed. The tape switches to 2x speed. The dancer reaches the end of the stage, jumps on a trampoline and lands twenty feet away to start another sequence right away. The tape switches to 3x speed. She's back on the trampoline again. The tape freezes for a split-second while she's in the middle of the air. It switches to 2x speed. It switches to 4x speed. The tape cuts to a totally different performance by the same dancer on a different night. She crosses the stage at 3x speed and immediately sets off at a 40 degree angle at 2x speed. The tape pauses. The tape starts again. Ballet is fucking graceful. Like clockwork, Bach-work, and the carefree surf rock life of celestial riffing and non-work. The tape switches to 1x speed just long enough to make your spine tingle suddenly confronting simple direct beauty. The tape cuts out and a DVD of the same dancer cuts in. It gets stuck in a loop for a few seconds. When it lurches out of the loop the dancer looks thrown into the air by a gale force, landing to start a new sequence as the disc switches to 2x speed. Something like all this repeats a few dozen times. The new Ahleuchatistas album sounds like this and so did their earlier two albums, but this is their best so start here and work backwards. Start soon because it's not only their best, but the best for an entire genre. Let's play around just for the moment and call it "post-jazz jump-cut grind-surf-core". I might even get bolder and say it's the peak of the much wider genre of ultra-caffeinated math rock of rhythmically geometric variety (meaning: non-spazzy, Don Cab instead of Hella). Strip away the post-hardcore aggression and you find the cellular loop structures of Cuneiform staples like Forever Einstein and Philharmonie, both smooth and jagged. Derek Poteat plays bass guitar. Throbbing, surging, nimble. Sean Dail plays drumkit. Legato blastbeats, phase-shifting cymbal flurries, a handful of wind-up toys playing with each other. Shane Perlowin plays electric guitar. No effects, no distortion, no processing, the clean, crisp, crystalline, clear unadultered sound of the electric guitar. POINTILLISM AND FURY. Ahleuchatistas. I played this album five times in a row when I first got it and now a few weeks later I still can't keep it out of my stereo. It's one of those rare albums that provides not only boundless bliss, but an actual definition of my musical taste in part. I'm not a space alien; thousands of people will drool over this album if they hear it, which is super easy to do. -Michael Anton Parker

WILLIAM GAGLIARDI QUINTET - Memories Of Tomorrow (CIMP 332; USA) Featuring William Gagliardi on alto, soprano & tenor saxes, John Carlson on trumpet, Ken Wessel on guitar, Dave Hofstra on bass and Lou Grassi on drums. Both CIMP and Fresh Sound New Talent labels have something in common: they both present many new bandleaders, backed by sidemen who are more well =-known than them. Although, this is Gagliardi's fourth release for CIMP, I was unfamiliar with him until now. I know the trumpet man John Carlson from his work with Free Range Rat, local heroes with a fine disc on CIMP, which included a fine saxist named Eric Hipp, an old friend from UYA. Ken Wessel was in a later version of Ornette's Prime Time band. I've known of bassist Dave Hofstra for over two decades, since he's been with Microscopic Septet, The President, blues/rock gigs with Elliott Sharp and nowadays playing with Little Huey Orchestra and the Daves. Lou Grassi is a great drummer and has appeared on some 20+ CIMP discs so far.
"Coup d'e-tat follies" opens and flows freely, yet tightly with Bill's tenor sax and John's trumpet sailing over the great guitar, bass and drums rhythm team below. Wessel's superb guitar swirls and creates waves that help hold the group together and focused. There is a strong bond between the sax and trumpet as they glide together, while takes an amazing, spacious and highly inventive solo. These pieces sound as if they are conducted since there is such tight interplay between all parties. "Let's Play" is a bit more traditional, with a rich jazz guitar solo from Wessel and strong solos from the sax and trumpet together. The title track is a completely different, lovely and laid back dream-world with some gorgeous guitar and warm harmonies for the sax and trumpet. It flows freely and effortlessly with the sax, trumpet and guitar all swirling around one another intricately. I dig the way "The Key to the Gates", is so elegant dreamy, with sublime muted trumpet, floating sax and delicate guitar. It is as if another band has materialized and taken the place of the first more fire-breathing quintet. Strangely enough, they end with a funky theme that is also free at the same time called "The Question Unanswered", they explode the groove and smash it inside out. Very odd and quite unexpected. Perhaps this is the "unanswered question"? Something to ponder as I reach up to pull the disc from my player. - BLG

BOBBY FEW & AVRAM FEFER - Sanctuary (CIMP #333) Featuring Bobby Few on piano, Avram Fefer on soprano & tenor saxes, Hill Greene on double bass and Newman Taylor Baker on drums. I knew that this quartet was going to be great, since Bobby & Avram had two sensational duo discs out on the Boxholder label last year and they just work so well together. They also picked a fine rhythm section to work with, both veterans of numerous fine discs, groups and gigs. Over the past half dozen years, Avram Fefer, has appeared on nearly 10 CD's on the Cadnce, CIMP or Boxholder labels and each one has shown him to be a fine saxist, as well as a strong composer. He is currently a member of Burnt Sugar, that amazing jazz/funk/rock/space arkestra led by Greg Tate. Bobby Few and Avram met in France in the mid-nineties, where Bobby has been living for a long while, playing for many years with the late Steve Lacy.
The dynamite opening tune is called "Far to Few" and it is a righteous, hypnotic, modal type of piece with a theme that you can't quite get out of your head once you hear it. Totally seductive. Avram's tone on tenor is just so fat and fine, pure grits and gravy. Bobby's swell solo is completely enchanting, he plays those rolling chords the way Harold Mabern does with an uplifting groove. Avram's solo is warm, blustery and will make anyone smile. It reminds me of Archie Shepp in the sixties, when his tone and playing were at the best. Bobby plays with that McCoy-ish waterfall sound at the beginning of the title track, which turns out to be a charming laid back gem, with some sublime tenor from Avram. So good! On "For Frank (Lowe)", Avram again shows off his glowing tone as tribute to the late Frank Lowe. The main theme has an old-fashioned groove, yet it flows freely in other past of the piece. "Club Foot" features Avram on soprano, opens into fee space with just percussion and sax, before it hits its majestic stride, with some truly fine solo soprano and solo piano sections. Bobby plays some wondrous cosmic streams on the final piece, "City Life", the entire quartet takes off for the stratosphere on this one ascending together into the heavens. This is one of the best discs I've heard from the devoted folks at CIMP. - BLG

AND MORE AMAZING REISSUES COURTESY OF HANNIBAL/RYKO..

HAROLD BUDD - The Serpent/Abandoned Cities (Opal/All Saints-Hannibal-Ryko 1494; UK) 2005 rmstr with updated packaging. 2 late '70s-early '80s releases on 1 CD. Recorded back when "ambient" meant Brian Eno rather than enervated techno, the LP and EP collected here were originally released on Budd's own Cantil label in the early '80s. The Serpent (In Quicksilver) consists of five solo keyboard works and one very interesting collaboration between Budd and pedal steel player Chas Smith. That piece, titled "Afar," evokes some of the music Brian and Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois were making at around the same time to accompany a film about the Apollo space mission. It's echoey and ethereal, and yet that pedal steel sound keeps things tethered to the earth (nothing wrecks the mental image of limitless space quite like the sound of steel guitar). The other pieces are also quite lovely, though not quite as interesting; many sound improvised and are as much about sound treatment as they are about harmonic or melodic development. Abandoned Cities is made up of two very long pieces for keyboard and electric guitar. In mood, if not sound, they bring to mind Robert Fripp and Brian Eno's No Pussyfooting album: the guitar is barely recognizable, and harmonic movement is mostly limited to long suspensions and resolutions. It's a beautiful, dark, shimmery sound, though, and will reward your attention or lull you to sleep -- whichever you prefer. ~ Rick Anderson, AMG

HAROLD BUDD - White Arcades (Opal/All Saints/Hannibal/Ryko 1491; UK) 2005 rmstr with updated packaging. On the short-lived moment when Warner Bros. was distributing Eno's [who co-composed the cut "Totems Of The Red-Sleeved Warrior" on this release] label Opal records, this Harold Budd album probably reached more people than his previous work combined. One can hope so, at least. This album shows Budd at his most stylistically pure: nine pieces that rarely shift from their piano and synth instrumentation, all treated with much echo and coloration. Budd is after beauty, not menace, but with the mystery that follows it. From the pulse of "Coyote" to the grand thunder and rolling clouds of "Balthus Bemused By Color," this is a solid album, one for thinking, studying, or whatever one does when the ambient comes. -- Ted Mills AMG

JOHN CALE - Words For The Dying (Opal/All Saints/Hannibal/Ryko 1492; UK) 2005 rmstr with updated packaging. The central work in Words for the Dying - produced by Brian Eno and recorded in Russia - is "The Falklands Suite," John Cale's belated attempt to canonize the Falkland Islands conflict through the poetry of Dylan Thomas. Delivered in six distinct parts (which include two musical interludes and an "Introduction" to herald the whole thing), the suite is a mix of refined classical arrangements -- courtesy of the Orchestra of Symphonic and Popular Music of Gosteleradio, USSR -- and Cale's unsuccessful attempts to translate Thomas' imagery through song. The arrangements are about as busy as an Irish butcher on a Friday, but with that comes a clarity of sound that makes the mood of the music transparent. This isn't a case of trying to prove that John Cale can write classical music -- we already know that -- just an example of using the right tools for the job. While the arrangements are often lovely and the Choir of Llandaff Cathedral Choir School is an inspired vehicle for Thomas' poetry, the words lose their power in the retelling. "Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed" is transported from paper to production safely, but it's unlikely that the poet had the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" in mind when he wrote -Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night. This is followed by the two-part "Songs Without Words," a pair of solo piano pieces that won't displace the klavierstucke of Johannes Brahms anytime soon. The album ends with "The Soul of Carmen Miranda," which features Brian Eno and Neil Catchpole. It presages the music of Wrong Way Up and, despite being an effective and moody piece of avant-garde pop, has no earthly purpose. Perhaps Cale's own unusual hairstyle (which resembles a book of carpet samples more than anything) led him to re-evaluate the impact of an actress who could dance with ten pounds of fruit on her head. John Cale deserves credit for continuing to follow his own muse, but music about the Falklands War and Carmen Miranda is obscure even by avant-garde standards. ~ Dave Connolly, AMG

BRIAN ENO/JAH WOBBLE - Spinner (Opal/All Saints/Hannibal/Ryko 1495) 2005 rmstr with updated packaging. Brian Eno's icy ohms and Jah Wobble 's din collide on Spinner . It's not a collaborative effort in the traditional sense; rather, Eno shipped off tracks from an aborted soundtrack [for a Derek Jarman film] to the ex- Public Image Ltd. bassist, who in turn mucked about with some of the tracks and left others unmolested. The end result is interesting: ten musical chambers linked together in a continuous stream that range from steamy Eastern settings ("Like Organza") to uber-funk experiments ("Unusual Balance").
Note that a bonus track of eerie lounge music appears as a mystery 11th cut (actually the tail half of the tenth track separated by a few minutes of silence).

DJIVAN GASPARIAN - I Will Not Be Sad In This World (Opal/All Saints/Hannibal/Ryko 1493; UK) 2005 rmstr with updated packaging. Originally released in the Western Hemisphere on Eno's Opal label [Eno licensed it from it's Russian label Melodya) in the early '90s. Djivan is the undisputed master of the Duduk, an Armenian oboe, It is impossible to describe in words the soulful and sad nature of the heartbreakingly beautiful solos of traditional Armenian melodies to be heard here [one cut is a duo with Vachagan Avakian]; suffice it to say that no one who has heard this record has ever forgotten it - in the decade since the previous edition was out-of-print not a week has gone by without requests for it! Highly Recommended!

KRONOS QUARTET//TERRY RILEY - Cadenza On The Night Plain (Hannibal/Ryko 1509) 2005 rmstr with updated packaging. The Kronos Quartet made its name by combining extreme virtuosity with equally extreme ecumenism of taste. The group brings the same seriousness to bear on Bo Diddley songs as on works by Arvo Part and George Crumb, so shock value has always been an integral part of their approach. But the Quartet's virtuosity is what saves that approach from gimmickry; they are almost always convincing in their implicit argument that you ought to take all of the music they perform as seriously as they do. This collection of pieces by minimalist Terry Riley consists of four works, all of which are worth hearing... "Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector" takes a 14-note motif in the Dorian mode and turns it into a splayed, herky-jerky concatenation of lines that, when taken together, sound like the aural equivalent of tall, uncoordinated kids playing basketball. More conventional and attractive are the jazz-based "G Song" and "Mythic Birds Waltz." The title track is a strange, 37-minute program piece thematically devoted to the most woolly-headed of received new age wisdom, from its explicitly India-derived structure to its piously anti-Western section headings.

TRIO BULGARKA - The Forest Is Crying [Lament For Indje Voivode] (Hannibal/Ryko 1342) 2005 rmstr with updated packaging. With help from a half-dozen Bulgarian musicians (although there are occasional a cappella and solo tracks), the trio perform 18 traditional folk songs. The emotional vocals and astonishing harmonics will appeal to anyone who likes the more renowned Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares albums. The approach here may be sparser and have less elaborate vocal arrangements, but it's none the less powerful for that. ~ Richie Unterberger, AMG

IF YOU LIKE 'POWER TOOLS'
[AND EVEN IF YA DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE TALKIN'BOUT]
THESE TWO SHRIEVE/FRISELL/HORVITZ DISCS ARE A MUST!!!

MICHAEL SHRIEVE With SHAWN LANE/JONAS HELLBORG//& With BILL FRISELL/WAYNE HORVITZ - Two Doors: Deep Umbra/Flying Polly (Times Square 9049) [originally a 2 CD set that has now been fit completely on one CD!]. Former Santana drummer Michael Shrieve's 1995 release Two Doors is appropriately titled, for it really is two albums in one, with two different trios providing the music. The first half of the record, subtitled "Deep Umbra," features Shrieve with guitarist Shawn Lane and bassist Jonas Hellborg performing eight jazz-rock compositions full of catchy themes and fiery improvisations. Lane is, simply put, one of the most technically gifted guitarists ever to pick up the instrument, and he records far too obscurely and infrequently. It is to his great credit that he never displays his abilities gratuitously, but instead carefully measures them out for maximum impact. He is a consummate musician. The same could be said about Hellborg, who not only holds down the bottom end with his sensitive yet powerful bass, but also shares co-writing credits for seven of the eight songs that he appears on. The second half of this disc, subtitled "Flying Polly," features Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz. This half of the record is jazzier and more avant-garde than the first half...There are moments where some of the rock/jazz elements that Frisell and Horvitz explored in John Zorn's Naked City come to the foreground. Shrieve's drums are very nicely recorded, and he always plays the most appropriate thing for any given song, never showboating or otherwise distracting from the integrity of the composition. There is much merit in this frustratingly inconsistent album, and for fusion fans it is worth searching out. ~ Daniel Gioffre, All Music Guide
CD $12

MICHAEL SHRIEVE With BILL FRISELL/WAYNE HORVITZ - Fascination (CMP 67; Germany) Progressing with guitarist Carlos Santana from his early Afro-Cuban rock and pop-based successes to his experimentation with jazz fusion, drummer Michael Shrieve subsequently released a string of fine solo recordings of his own. This one features guitar hero Bill Frisell and the ever-inventive organist Wayne Horvitz for a rather divergent set featuring ethereal soundscapes, loose grooves, and crunching opuses. Here, Shrieve provides sturdy backbeats to coincide with some nicely placed fills and his acute implementations of the dynamic. This effort highlights Frisell's wily and rather slithery guitar work, enhanced by the glowing sonic characteristics of the production, when viewed upon as a whole. The band is apt to soar skyward via climactic overtures in concert with a crash-and-burn methodology. Needless to say, this affair represents a potent concoction of jazz-fusion melded with folksy themes and an avant-garde-type swing vamp, evidenced on "The Glass Tent." - Glenn Astarita, All Music Guide

DADA ET LA MUSIQUE [V.A.] - Dada et la Musique (Muza 2005; EEC) Produced by the Centre Pompidou in France, specifically to be sold at the recent Dada exhibit there. Includes some classic original works (Schwitters, George Antheil), Raoul Hausmann); the majority are new recordings of original dada works by an European ensemble directed by Johny Fritz. "The Dadaists did their best, by means of agitation and sheer noise, to knock down the idols of an Old World, which had not hesitated to plunge the people of Europe into the bloodiest of wars. But, as they were artists in their inner souls despite their negation of art itself, they could not completely stifle their general movement of destruction to produce works of art. Whether it be in the derisive gluing together of the pieces they had broken asunder, whether it be in the resolute trampling out of all aesthetics. This album proposes several examples of what deliberate cacophony was able to produce in the way of poetry and music, not only in the Dadaist circle, but also among those composers who, at one moment of another in their development, identified themselves with the Dadaist movement." Includes works by: Satie, Germaine Albert-Birot, Hugo Ball, Honegger, Tristan Tzara, Cyril Scott, Jean Arp, Schonberg, Poulenc, Kurt Schwitters, George Antheil, Marinetti, Vincente Huidobro, Milhaud, Max Ernst, Raoul Haussman, Erwin Schulhoff, Richard Huelsenbeck.

GOLDEN AFRIQUE [V.A.] - Vol. 2 [2 CD set] (Network 24.971; Germany) "The critical acclaim that was heaped on Golden Afrique Vol. 1 has spurred Network's team of editors. They have now completed a second volume dedicated entirely to Congolese dance music. The very finest of performers chart the history of Central African guitar music from African Rumba to the early forms of Soukous music. Here, then, is the music that has conquered all of Africa, even toppling Highlife from its throne as the pan-African party sound. From the beginnings of the outstanding Ngoma label to Kabasele's 'Independance Cha Cha Cha' - a 1960s single that set the whole of Africa dancing - and featuring an early recording by Manu Dibango, the ports of call on this musical journey are the sounds of the great and the good. They include Tabu Ley Rochereau, Franco, a musical heavyweight whose death was mourned across an entire continent, Sam Mangwana, who continues to roll back the boundaries in his indefatigable quest for new sounds and combinations, Dr. Nico, known simply as the 'god of guitar' and Nyboma, whose productions even had West Africans dancing the Congolese Soukous. Golden Afrique Vol. 2 includes all those gems and much, much more." KONONO NO. 1 - Congotronics 1 (Crammed Craw 27; Belgium) NEW LOWER PRICE! Konono No. 1 was founded over twenty-five years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembe (a traditional instrument sometimes called 'sanza' or 'thumb piano,' consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band's line-up includes three electric likembes (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts and plugged into amplifiers. There's also a rhythm section that uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring megaphones dating from the colonial period. Instead of apologizing for the heavily distorted sounds of such DIY amplification, Konono No. 1 have embraced them, provoking a radical mutation of their sound, and has accidentally connected them with the aesthetics of today's most underground forms of music as much through their sounds as through their sheer volume (they play in front of a wall of speakers) and merciless grooves. Hailing from Africa and rooted in a very social form of folk music-making, Konono No. 1 is one of the main exponents of a spectacular style of music which has developed in the suburbs of the capital city of Kinshasa. The Congolese refer to this style as 'tradi-modern,' meaning electrified traditional music. These are musicians who have left the bush to settle in the capital and, in order to both continue fulfilling their social role and make themselves heard above the urban din, they have resorted to DIY amplification of their instruments, and the use of megaphones The album was produced and recorded in Kinshasa by one of the best connoisseurs of Congolese music and old car parts, our own Vincent Kenis. [And yes, the much awaited new Konono No. 1 disc, which is actually a compilation, will be released next month.]

The music ranges from the guitar-driven experimentation of Sonic Youth, Red Transistor and minimalism of Rhys Chatham to the dubbed-out disco of Arthur Russell and Nicky Siano and Pulsallama. All alongside a healthy dose of punk-funk from the likes of Y Pants, Vortex and more. Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham (minimalist classical composer), Jim Jarmusch (film-maker and founding member of Del Byzantines), Arthur Russell, Ned Sublette (writer), Thurston Moore -- all included here -- played key roles in bringing the New York music and art scene together in the early 1980s alongside the artist Jean Michel Basquiat, actor Vincent Gallo, poet Lydia Lunch and a host of other characters. SEVEN SEMINAL REISSUES BY THE MARVELOUS JOHN MARTYN:

JOHN MARTYN - Bless the Weather (Island 321; UK) 2005 Island Remasters reissue including seven bonus tracks plus enhanced packaging and sleeve notes. "Bless the Weather was released in 1971, and was a beautiful and heartfelt album, recorded at Sound Technician in Chelsea. Danny Thompson (Pentangle) played bass, Richard Thompson, Tony Reeves (Colosseum), Ian Whiteman and Roger Powell (Mighty Baby) all contributed. John's unique fusion of folk, rock and jazz, his fascination with electronics and its boundless possibilities were becoming more obvious in his music. This experimentation began to distance him from the folk scene as he continued to break all the rules using the echoplex to build layers of rhythmic sound. 'Glistening Glyndebourne' showcased John's technique of playing acoustic guitar through the echoplex to stunning effect. The calm and floating 'Go Easy,' the organic and joyous celebration of spirituality 'Walk to the Water' and anthemic 'Head and Heart' instill a feeling of inner contentment. Bless the Weather proved very popular, receiving enthusiastic reviews from his fans and the music press. For the first time we can also hear a version of 'Head and Heart' recorded with a band during the sessions on 17th May 1971."

JOHN MARTYN - Inside Out (Island 322; UK) 2005 Island Remasters reissue including four previously unreleased bonus tracks plus enhanced packaging and sleeve notes. "Inside Out was released in 1973. The free-form jazz oriented experimental album features sublime guitar work by John and superbly varied bass playing from Danny Thompson. Traffic's Steve Winwood (keyboards) and Chris Wood (sax) also contribute, as do Remi Kabaka (percussion) and others. The intensive recording sessions took place over a few days and were largely late at night with no cutting, editing or splicing. It was 'live' and tracks were faded out where necessary. The album won John a Golden Disc from Montreaux and received glowing reviews from the music press who described it as 'music from inner space' and a 'cosmic foray.' Inside Out is an intensely personal and expressively invigorating album, an exquisite flowing blend of vocals, guitar, keyboards, sax and drums. The provocative experimentation with echoplex and distortion effects set him apart from other traditional 'folk' musicians. Live performances are included on this release courtesy of the BBC from their Sounds of the Seventies radio show presented by Bob Harris and first broadcast on 15th October 1973."

JOHN MARTYN - London Conversation (Island 319; UK) 2005 Island Remasters reissue including one bonus track plus enhanced packaging and sleeve notes. "John's debut album, London Conversation, was recorded in mono at Pye Studios in Marble Arch and released October 1967. An album of innocent songs that won praise from the music press and launched a career that has spanned five decades. London Conversation was released when John was just nineteen years old, the album being produced by Theo Johnson under the supervision of Chris Blackwell. The album is in the folk tradition with some excellent lyrics and jazzy instrumentation such as the sitar and flute in 'Rolling Home.' It was this instrumentation that set John apart from his fellow musicians on the folk circuit at the time." Includes the track 'Sandy Grey,' a song about Nick Drake, written by the American singer-songwriter Robin Frederick, and also 'Cocain,' which is a traditional song arranged by John which still remains a favorite with him: the only song from the album that he still performs today. John's cover of Bob Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice' demonstrates his sensitive nature. His young fresh voice gives the song a simple, almost innocent air and this same innocence is evident throughout the whole album."

JOHN MARTYN - Sunday's Child (Island 323; UK) 2005 Island Remasters reissue with seven bonus tracks plus enhanced packaging and sleeve notes.. "Sunday's Child was recorded and mixed during August 1974 at Island Studios in Hammersmith and released in January 1975. The sessions were short but intensive, producing songs of considerable contrasts from the rock n' roll 'Root Love and Clutches,' to the traditional folk song 'Spencer the Rover.' The overall feel of the album is one of contentment and John called it 'the family album, very happy, purely romantic...a nice period.'" Three of the bonus tracks on this CD are previously unreleased, including five from a 1975 BBC Radio One John Peel Session.
CD $15

JOHN MARTYN - The Tumbler (Island 320; UK) 2005 Island Remasters reissue plus enhanced packaging and sleeve notes. "The Tumbler was released in 1968, recorded at Regent Sound, Denmark Street in London's Soho. John's previous album, London Conversation had been well received, however The Tumbler documents an early step forward in his musical progression. On his performance on the BBC for John Peel's Night Ride radio show, John played songs that would later feature on this record, 'Sing a Song of Summer,' 'The Gardeners,' 'Goin' Down to Memphis' and 'The River.' Saxophonist and flautist Harold McNair's playing is influential on this record, particularly so on 'Dusty,' 'Fly on Home' and the dark and worrying 'The Gardeners,' adding a new dimension to The Tumbler. John's fast and dazzling finger picking guitar technique is a feature of the album, particularly on 'Seven Black Roses,' which John describes as his visual guitar solo or Spiders on the Strings. A vigorous and tonally expanded instrumental, one of the few songs from this album that John still performed live to wide acclaim in his 1970s gigs and one that remains an inspiration to all aspiring
guitarists." CD $15

JOHN & BEVERLY MARTYN - Stormbringer! (Island 317; UK) 2005 Island Remasters reissue plus enhanced packaging and sleeve notes.includes four unreleased bonus cuts!
Originally released in 1970, this is the Island remastered reissue with bonus material. "Of all the musicians to emerge in the British folk boom of the mid-1960s, John Martyn is surely the most progressive and one of the most influential. His music has explored folk, jazz, blues and rock styles and continues to inspire successive generations of musicians. Born Iain David McGeachy in 1948 in New Malden in Surrey, and growing up in Glasgow, Martyn was musically influenced by such diverse spheres as classical music and baroque folk guitarist Davy Graham. After releasing one solo album, he teamed up with singer Beverley Kutner, who later became his wife and musical partner. Stormbringer was the first of their two albums together and was produced in New York City by Joe Boyd, featuring contributions from Levon Helm (The Band), Billy Mundi (Mothers of Invention), Herbie Lovell, John Simon and Paul Harris. The recordings would comprise a pace-setting acoustic rock adventure, with folk guitars filled out by pounding drums, piano and bass also featuring the debut of Martyn's use of the Echoplex tape loop delay unit which would define his guitar sound and his music over the ensuing few years. A fan of the work of saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders, John would later admit that his initial exploration of the use of the Echoplex unit would be as a result of attempting to imitate Sander's unique sustain technique on his guitar. Housed in a striking sleeve designed by Nigel Waymouth of Hapshash and the Coloured Coat fame, Stormbringer was critically well-received, but the album failed to make an impression on the album charts in both Britain and America

JOHN & BEVERLY MARTYN - The Road to Ruin (Island 318; UK) 2005 Island Remasters reissue plus enhanced packaging and sleeve notes..
Originally released in 1970, this is the Island remastered reissue with bonus material. The second and last album with John and Beverley Martyn featured as a husband and wife duo. "With Joe Boyd once again producing, Martyn was keen to explore a spontaneous approach to recording, focussing on atmosphere rather than technical perfection. John was also exploring other musical directions and influences. The material recorded would have a more collaborative feel between the duo than their debut album. Boyd had enlisted the services of some highly respected session musicians to assist with the recordings, notably jazz musicians Ray Warleigh and Lyn Dobson, and bass guitarist Dave Pegg. In hindsight, the sessions would be the launch pad and blueprint for John's solo career for the next five years. The recording of the song 'New Day' would have lasting repercussions for John, as it was his first studio session with former Pentangle double bassist Danny Thompson. Another notable recording was 'Give Us a Ring,' written for John's friend and musical cohort Nick Drake. The Beverley Martin song 'Here I Am Now,' only received a mono monitor mix before it was consigned to the vaults. Thirty-five years on, the song finally receives the release it deserves as a bonus track on this expanded CD reissue. Despite some very favourable reviews upon its release, the album followed the fate of its predecessor by failing to break into the UK album chart."

NEW LOWER PRICE COURTESY OF Mr. MONCUR HIMSELF!!!

GRACHAN MONCUR III With JACKIE McLEAN - The Moncur Blue Note Recordings: Evolution/Some New Stuff/One Step Beyond/Destination Out/Hipnosis/'Bout Soul [Ltd/#'d 3 CD set] (Mosaic Select 803792) GRACHAN MONCUR III AND THE POINT OF DISCOVERY: It's a moment in time. And it's a reason for being. The point of discovery for Grachan Moncur III was the moment this music happened, an era when he and his contemporary Rodwell Rudd were the names in free jazz on trombone. And the point of discovery is Moncur's reason for playing trombone the way he does and writing music in his inimitable style.
Hearing these tracks again is to put yourself in a time when jazz was an uncontainable force. There were innovations everywhere. Some were regional. Some stylistic. Some petered out. Others haunt us still. But again, the job of the discoverer is not to sort all that out. It's to go on discovering. And Grachan Moncur III -- who played and recorded with Ray Charles and Benny Golson [along with Wayne Shorter] by the time he was 20 in '57, was, during the 1960s, virile, alert, determined, respectful of tradition, trained in composition and on his instrument, but eager for something new, to find what else. The album titles from the time tell it all: There were Jackie McLean's One Step Beyond and Destination Out. There were Moncur's own Evolution and Some Other Stuff. These were young men on a quest to find a place in art where there was no place, because that place was always moving away. Musician and Composer of Merit: The McLean LPs were Moncur's biggest introduction yet to the world as a musician and composer, and his importance in both fields was immediately felt. His music had a peculiar characteristic of seeming at the same time familiar and strange, like Monk's. Yes, you find yourself saying, Frankenstein is a jazz waltz, but it's like no jazz waltz I've heard. Yes, Air Raid is propelled against a very present sense of time, and it's a composition with a clear structure, but I'm not sure exactly where one comes again. And Evolution? Pure art. That kind of thing. His music toys with your expectations at the same time that it fulfills them.
And his sound was all his own. While the trombone is by nature intensely masculine, Moncur could always find its ethereal qualities. Sleek, unadorned, his blowing clear and direct, Moncur's music could move right smack into you.
This newly remastered Mosaic Select package captures Moncur in the act, with the aforementioned Jackie McLean (replaced by Wayne Shorter on the Some Other Stuff sessions) and with that exceptional young dynamo, Tony Williams on drums. In addition to the records already mentioned, this set also includes McLean's Hipnosis and most of 'Bout Soul. Sidemen include Bobby Hutcherson, Eddie Kahn, Larry Ridley, Roy Haynes, Lee Morgan, Bob Cranshaw, Herbie Hancock, Cecil McBee, Woody Shaw, Lamont Johnson, Scotty Holt, Billy Higgins and Rashied Ali. The four sessions led by Jackie McLean include a number of Moncur compositions, and help bookend the material on the now out-of-print Mosaic package, The Complete Blue Note 1964-1966 Jackie McLean Sessions. This set is limited, too, and is certain to sell out... - Michael Cuscuna
"Moncur's compositions presaged the time when 'jazz' musicians actively broke out of the mold of 'jazz' music to become progenitors of creative new music, period. Shortly after this middle '60s period would follow the artists of the AACM, Braxton, the AEC, Leo Smith, and many more since then from all over the world. But to hear records on a 'jazz' label [Blue Note, to boot] that were actually closer to amazing 'modern classical' records - I actually prefer the phrase 'contemporary composer' - was unheard of at that time - notable exceptions include Jimmy Giuffre's 1954 Capitol album 'Tangents In Jazz' [sadly not in print on CD]. If you've never heard Moncur's 'Some Other Stuff' or 'Evolution', play them now, and hire a crane to lift your jaw back into position afterwards! And we all should know that Jackie Mac's 'Destination Out' and 'One Step Beyond' are among McLean's finest recordings: look at the writing credits - mostly Moncur! No exploration of 'creative music' or 'jazz' can be worth anything without hearing these discs. ALL TIME THUMBS UP!!!" - Mannylunch

LAURIE ANDERSON With ADRIAN BELEW/BILL LASWELL/NILE RODGERS et al - Home Of The Brave (Warner Bros; EEC) 1986's Home of the Brave is the soundtrack to a film consisting of live pieces debuted during Laurie Anderson's first world tour, promoting 1984's Mister Heartbreak. Only one song from that album, a radically reworked version of the William S. Burroughs cameo "Sharkey's Night," appears here; the rest of the album is something of a return to the performance art basis of Anderson's earlier work like Big Science and United States I-IV, but it is all previously unreleased compositions.

CD $12.00 7 for 6 SALE.

HAROLD BUDD - Luxa (Opal/All Saints 30; UK) Luxa was Harold Budd's first solo album since 1991's By the Dawn's Early Light. One notable difference between this keyboard-focused album and the last one like it (1988's acclaimed The White Arcades) are the brighter tones Budd displays on each instrumental. The veteran composer's mastery of space and silence still places him far above the legions of New Age imitators who use minimalism as a crutch rather than as a true means of expression. --Bryan Reesman, Amazon

JOHN CALE - Hobo Sapiens (EMI; EEC) Can't remember the last time John Cale had new release out in the US, but it must've been a while ago. This 2003 release is no exception - it's only released in Europe and Japan! Who else would write songs about Magritte and Archimedes? What stands out here is Cale's inventive arrangements, evocative keyboards (mellotron?) and strings, all layered just right underneath his hypnotic, dreamy voice. Cale seems to favor some slowed down techno grooves here and there. A couple of the mainly instrumental songs here deal with catchy grooves and mesmerizing keyboard swirls. "Twilight Zone" mixes David Bowie and Peter Gabriel modern rock influences and includes a rather catchy chorus. "Letter from Abroad" is a disturbing, nightmarish piece which seems to deal with the current state of world affairs and horrors. John Cale always does a fine job of evoking the dark undercurrents of recent times, without being too specific, giving us a chance to consider these things for ourselves. - BLG

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND - Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) (Virgin; UK) After 2 awful records for Mercury in the mid-'70s, the Captain returned to works matching his former greatness with his last 3 albums [done for Virgin]. This is the first of those 3 and is a revision of the unreleased Bat Chain Puller album recordings that Zappa would not release the originals of to the Captain. Who can forget "When I See Mommy I Feel Like A Mummy"!?!
CD $14.00 7 for 6 SALE.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND - A Carrot Is As Close As A Rabbit Gets To A Diamond (Virgin; UK) This concentrates exclusively on Beefheart's work for Virgin - Unconditionally Guaranteed, Blue Jeans and Moonbeams, Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller), Doc at the Rader Station, Ice Cream for Crow, and the Light Reflected Off the Oceans of the Moon 12" [it contains the title cut instrumental which never appeared on an album] - so it may interest people who already own Trout Mask Replica and want to get only one more Beefheart album, as well as those who have difficulty finding his aforementioned Virgin releases. Also, the compilation intersperses brief snatches of Beefheart's songs in between the 18 complete songs on this album - mostly spoken word excerpts from "Apes Ma," "Hey Garland, I Dig Your Tweed Coat," "Cardboard Cutout Sundown," ""8!" Poop Hatch," "Making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on My Knee," "Party of Special Things to Do," and "Flavor Bud Living."

JOHN COLTRANE & DON CHERRY - The Avant-Garde (Atlantic/Rhino 98922; EEC) This album is rightfully co-credited to Don Cherry (trumpet), who ably trades blows with John Coltrane (tenor/soprano sax) throughout. The Avant-Garde also boasts the debut studio recording of Coltrane playing soprano sax -- on "The Blessing" -- in addition to his continuing advancements on tenor. Although these tracks were recorded during the summer of 1960, they remained shelved for nearly six years. Joining Coltrane and Cherry are essentially the rest of the members of the Ornette Coleman Quartet, Ed Blackwell (drums) and Charlie Haden (bass) on "Cherryco" and "The Blessing," as well as Percy Heath (bass) on the remaining three selections.
[Please note: there are no bonus cuts on this Rhino edition - just better mastering!]
CD $10.00 7 for 6 SALE.

LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS + DARIN GRAY - This Past Spring (Family Vineyard; USA) ... A rare thing happens - Darin solos also providing brooding and sinister waves of terror as Loren softly taps out distant voices of regret. Finally the bass drone gets thicker and more eerie as the guitar softly murmurs sad cries on top and a bit more tear-drenched wah-wah. It commences with that soft, sad melancholy aura that it began with and drifts off into nothingness once again... - BLG

ROBERT FRIPP - Radiophonics: Live In Argentina - 1995 Soundscapes Volume 1 (DGM 9505; USA) Fripp's solo guitar performances of the late '70's-early '80s using two Revox A77s to instantly loop portions of his live playing to provide a background for soloing (Frippertronics, developed by Fripp and Brian Eno on their two early 70's duet albums) By the '90s the equipment dispensed with the reel-to-reels, evolving into a sophisticated rack including the latest in digital delay equipment, making for live performance that concentrated on the compositional aspects of livetime layering without soloing (Soundscapes) This is the first of three volumes of 1995 Soundscape recordings (originally offered as a 3 CD box set); this documents 2 performances given on 4/8/95.
