ROSCOE MITCHELL With TYSHAWN SOREY / CRAIG TABORN / HUGH RAGIN / JAMES FEI / JARIBU SHAHID / TANI TABBAL - Bells for the South Side (ECM 2494/95; Germany) Roscoe Mitchell contrasts and – for the first time - combines the sounds and distinctive characters of his four trios in an exhilarating double album recorded at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Multi-instrumentalist and composer Mitchell had been invited to premiere new music at the museum, in the context of the exhibition The Freedom Principle, which celebrated the directions in music and art set in motion by the AACM on Chicago’s South Side. Starting out by exploring “Spatial Aspects of the Soundâ€, with the ensemble featuring both Craig Taborn and Tyshawn Sorey on pianos, Mitchell offers what amounts to a composer self-portrait in continually changing colours and textures, reflecting on his own history while looking toward the future. Two pieces - including the title composition – draw upon the full percussion instrumentarium of the Art Ensemble of Chicago – a panorama of gongs, bells, rattles, sirens, hand drums and more. Along the way there are remarkable contributions by all participants, among them a lyrical bass guitar feature for Jaribu Shahid on “EP 7849â€, a heart-dilating solo by Tani Tabbal on “Cards for Drumsâ€, an extended trumpet feature for Hugh Ragin on “Bells for the South Sideâ€, evocative and atmospheric electronics from Craig Taborn and James Fei on “Red Moon in the Skyâ€, and plenty of Mitchell’s powerhouse saxophones throughout, from the piercing sopranino down to the mighty bass sax. MIRIODOR - Signal 9 (Cuneiform 438; USA) “Maybe in part due to the amazing amount and quality of new improvised music that I had the privilege of listening to and writing about over the last year, I have recently been revisiting old albums, many from the seventies and eighties, some of which I probably haven’t listened to since then. Much of this music could be said to come under the umbrella of progressive rock, which in some ways has enabled me to ‘clean my ears’ in a way that Murray Schafer might approve of before I reconnect with the wealth of improvised music that is continuing to be released, with the audience interest for it also gaining momentum at present. One of these groups, Miriodor, is still going strong and far from reforming to hash out old favourites to a worn-out audience, as many progressive rock bands have, their music is still fresh and vibrant having recently released a new and interesting album in the form of Signal 9.
This is the ninth studio release from the avant-rock group who have been steadily releasing an original catalogue of work over the last thirty-odd years. A group that is also recognized and linked with the Rock In Opposition movement, and although they weren’t one of the original groups in that loose collective, there are sounds and structures in their music which are reminiscent of bands such as Henry Cow. Originally hailing from the French Canadian province of Quebec, the group has had many line-up changes over the years, with the current formation consisting of Pascal Globensky (keyboards), Rémi Leclerc (drums), Bernard Falaise (guitar), and Nicolas Lessard (bass, keyboards). Signal 9 is also dedicated to one of the founding members of the group, François Émond, who sadly passed away during the making of the album.
Miriodor’s music is often comprised of complex composed structures with sudden switches between a variety of stylistic themes and genres, making for a colorful and interesting heady mix of diverse musical moments. If I were to pull out one track off the album that defined the group’s sound the most, the piece ‘Portrait-robot’ would probably be it. One of the longer tracks on the album it starts with a motorik bass and drums rhythm, which is joined by an angular keyboard melody before the guitar comes in signaling an immediate change of melody. This gradually builds and builds in typical rock fashion, which then collapses into ambient and electronic sounds. After a while the music regains the strong rock rhythm section backing topped by mellotron sounds that quickly give way to a humoresque and circus-like music. Without any musical theme wanting to outstay it’s welcome it quickly proceeds into a final thematic section that is a development of the ambient and electronic passage. As mentioned previously it is these many changes in stylistic musical material, incorporation of humour and whimsy, classic rock backing, fragmented/angular melodies, and experimentation with sound, which are either all incorporated into the longer tracks or are shorter tracks juxtaposed alongside one another in the running order, that characterizes the musical mission statement of the group.
The album is excellently arranged and the clear structures define and shape the wealth of musical information that is being communicated to the listener in an ordered and resolute manner. Miriodor seem to find a way to keep an originality to their music without doing anything radically different from album to album. For me this is the essence of good musicianship and artistic vision, which they encapsulate in the cocktail of sound that they have consistently produced over the life span of the group. In this respect Signal 9 is a rewarding album for their many fans and as good a place to start for any who are unfamiliar with their enjoyable brand of progressive music.†- Chris Haines, FreeJazzBlog.org

CHEER-ACCIDENT - Putting Off Death (Cuneiform 446; USA) “Bands, like the human beings that comprise them, are mortal. Against all the odds, in the face of an unstable record industry that never embraced their restless experimentation, Chicago avant-rock pioneers CHEER-ACCIDENT have survived to release their 18th album, Putting Off Death. More than 30 years after first joining forces, fellow eclecticists Thymme Jones and Jeff Libersher have faced down the inevitable and returned with a new set of songs that’s as unpredictable, exploratory and viscerally compelling as anything they’ve released over the course of their erratically evolving career. The music is action packed and filled to the brim with living, breathing humanity. The band’s continuing hunger bleeds through in the music’s immediacy. As Jones says, "There's still something to prove."
The band’s third release for Cuneiform follows in the elusive, meandering trajectory of their earlier work, which is always instantly identifiable if never quite definable. They’ve managed to conjure a unique collage of intricate prog, lush pop and experimental noise, drawing on hugely disparate influences without ever settling on a sound that could be definitively traced to any of them in isolation. Meaning that they always did and continue to, sound like no one but themselves.
Following their previous release, No Ifs, Ands or Dogs, after a gap of six years, Putting Off Death is on the one hand simply an assertion that "We’re still here" from a band that never expected to be. CHEER-ACCIDENT continues to make vital, adventurous music after three decades despite - or maybe because of? - a revolving cast of collaborators (more than a dozen musicians are featured), and a notoriety in uneasy balance with an accompanying obscurity.
In the unusually long span since the band’s last release, the music industry has undergone seismic changes, which led CHEER-ACCIDENT to question whether traditional albums were still the ideal platform for their music. In the meantime, they continued to write music until the seven songs that make up Putting Off Death revealed their thematic and musical coherence and virtually demanded to become an album.â€

SUN RA and His ARKESTRA - Thunder of the Gods (Modern Harmonic 21; EEC) A New Sun Ra LP touches ground in the earthly bins, 50 years after it's creation! Sun Ra is still trying to get our attention 50 years after dispatching this transmission. Humanity's path since then makes his message even more urgent today. Years after Herman Poole "LeSony'r Ra" Blount "left the planet" he's still trying to reach us, to wake us up and to change our destiny. Sun Ra and the Arkestra weren't a traditional studio band, and every star in the vast galaxy of their discography reflects this. The origins of these records can be hard to pinpoint at times, but when it comes to Thunder Of The Gods, it's a bit easier. "Calling Planet Earth - We'll Wait For You" was discovered on tapes from Ra's, Universe In Blue, believed to be recorded in '71. The raucous title track and "Moonshots Across the Sky" are unearthed from the '66 Strange Strings sessions. Modern Harmonic has once again paired Ra's sonic art with the visual art of "The Father of Modern Space Art," Chesley Bonestell, whose 1952 work "Formation of the Earth's Continents" sprawls across the front and back covers.

ALEXANDRA GRIMAL / BENJAMIN DUBOC / VALENTIN CECCALDI - Bambu (Ayler 152; France) An unusual and captivating work from the trio of saxophonist Alexandra Grimal, double bassist Benjaim Duboc, and cellist Valentin Ceccaldi, leading their album with tracks from "Respirer l'ombre" by Giuseppe Penone "spontaneously used without permission but with great admiration," leading to powerful and unpredictable directions in free improvisation; excellent.

DAUNIK LAZRO / JEAN-LUC CAPPOZZO / DIDIER LASSERRE - Garden(s)(Ayler 150; France) The trio of Daunik Lazro on baritone and tenor saxophone, Jean-Luc Cappozzo on trumpet & flugelhorn and Didier Lasserre on drums, alternate jazz standards from Duke Ellington (Sophisticated Lady; Hop Head), John Coltrane (Lonnie's Lament), Albert Ayler (Angels), with original compositions and the 3-part "Garden", all in the varied traditions of jazz.

LEONOR FALCON - Imaga Mondo (Falcon Gumba; Argentina) Featuring Lenor Falcon on violin & compositions, Juanma Trujillo on guitar & mandolin, Christoph Knoche on bass clarinet & alien voice (1 track) and Juan Pablo Carletti on drums. The creative scene in South America continues to evolve with a handful of new releases every few months. Ms. Falcon just came to visit us and left us with her new quartet disc. Although I hadn’t heard of Ms. Falcon or guitarist Juanma Trujillo, I do know of Christof Knoche and Juan Pablo Carletti from different sources. German clarinetist Christof Knoche once had a disc out on Omnitone Records and has played here at DMG twice in the past year, working with (current) Downtowners Kirk Knuffke and Thomas Heberer. Argentinian drummer, Juan Pable Carletti, has been living in Jersey City for a while now, working with Tony Malaby and Daniel Levin. So I didn’t know what to expect when Ms. Falcon left us with this disc.
If the the first piece, “Nymphs and Spaceman†is any indication, then we are in for a pleasant surprise. While Trujillo plays a calm, hypnotic line on the mandolin, Ms. Falcon’s violin(s) sails in bathed in eerie echoes, several layers ghost-like strings weaving their way around one another with one lead string wheezing or sighing at the center. A completely mesmerizing opening. For “Gnomes†has the violin and bass clarinet play intricate lines around one another, both glowing with calm vibe at the center. “Play More Bebop†sounds like a request that an old school jazz freak might say, hence the quartet do play a relaxed version of bop, without the roller-coaster like intensity of Bird & Diz & Co. “Cronopios†shows that the quartet play freely yet still remain focused and not too far out. My fave piece is called, “Humanoides†and it has the guitar playing some dark slightly bent chords while the violin and bass clarinet exchange lines. each taking strong solos. I dig the way guitarist Trujillo creates a brooding undertow while using a minimal of effects on his guitar. The bass clarinet and violin both get a chance to stretch out on the first half of “Striding†while the restrained yet distorted guitar builds to a slow yet menacing crescendo in the second half. What I find most interesting about this disc/quartet is that they seem to be in between any established genres like: jazz, rock or progressive although they do draw from all of the above. MORTON FELDMAN - Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello (Another Timbre 113; UK) Morton Feldman's final composition, originally premiered in 1987, here performed by pianist Mark Knoop, violinist Aisha Orazbayeva, violist Bridget Carey, and cellist Anton Lukoszevieze, recording a year after their successful performance at London's Cafe Oto, maintaining focus and concentration on this large, unhurried work of micro-variations.

MICHAEL PISARO // MaDaM ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC IMPROVISATION ENSEMBLE - Sometimes (Edition Wandelweiser EWR 1703; Austria) The MaDam Electroacoustic Improvisation Collective based in Spain performs the first in Pisaro's 34 piece Harmony Series, which attempts to create the conditions for a harmonic situation without giving any actual notes, just numbers, durations of tones, and pauses; this work is based on "swell piece (for alison knowles)" (1967) by James Tenney.

MARIA de ALVEAR / ANTOINE BEUGER - Besando El Tiempo (Edition Wandelweiser EWR 1704/05; Austria) Antoine Beuger performs composer Maria De Alvear's 1995 contemplative work "Besando El Tiempo" (Kissing The Time) written using an automatic script and originally composed for the flautist Caren Levine; after hearing Beuger's interpretation she requested that he record it, the result this rendition that takes the composition on an introspective journey.

GRUPPO DI IMPROVVISAZIONE NUOVA CONSONANZA With ENNIO MORRICONE / FRANCO EVANGELISTI / et al - Azioni/Reazioni 1967-1969 (Die Schachtel 033; Italy) The year 2007 saw one of the most remarkable findings in the long treasure-hunting history of Die Schachtel: the complete set of recordings of the early manifestation (1967-1969) of one of the most legendary improv group of all time, the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. Rescued by the private archives of Walter Branchi, one of the original founding members -- alongside Franco Evangelisti, Ennio Morricone, Ivan Vandor, Roland Kayn, Egisto Macchi, Mario Bertoncini, and John Heineman -- the tapes were then restored in their entirety. Only a part of them were published in a CD-only boxset in an edition of 500, titled Azioni 1967-1969, which also featured a DVD with the original film Nuova Consonanza shot by Theo Gallher during the rehearsal and concert that the group held on March 19th and 20th, 1967, at the Galleria d'arte Moderna in Rome. Spanning from free-jazz to total abstract noise to wild electronic sounds, their music was -- and remains -- one of the most dynamic, original, and uncompromising expression of a period defined by intense experimentation and musical bravery, anticipating experiments to come in years following. Or, to put it simple, "They were utterly unique," as per the words that John Zorn, who expressively wrote for this edition. To mark the ten-year anniversary of its original release, Die Schachtel present Azioni/Reazioni 1967-1969, the complete cycle of improvisations -- which includes thirteen additional, never before published pieces -- taken from the original tapes. Remastered by Giuseppe Ielasi.

All versions include a 64-page, sewn-bound, LP-size book in English and Italian, complete with essays, memories shared by the group, a new article by Valentina Bertolani exploring in detail the techniques of the group, a chronology, a collection of original reviews by Maurizio Farina, and a set of unpublished black-and-white photos of the group playing in Venice's Teatro Della Fenice in 1968, taken from the archives of the Venice Biennale. PATTO With OLLIE HALSALL - Hold Your Fire: Expanded Edition (Esoteric 5043364; UK) Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of the classic 1971 album Hold Your Fire by the legendary Patto. One of the truly great bands of the early 1970s, Patto featured a line-up comprising Mike Patto (vocals), Ollie Halsall (guitar, vibes, keyboards, vocals), Clive Griffiths (bass) and John Halsey (drums). The band arose from the ashes of the group Timebox and recorded their self-titled debut album in 1970. Patto were graced by the presence of the stunning guitar playing of Ollie Halsall and a highly original and unique musical style that set them aside from their progressive rock contemporaries of the era. Hold Your Fire was the band's second album and includes such classics as 'You, You Point Your Finger', 'Hold Your Fire' and 'Air Raid Shelter'. This Esoteric Recordings remastered and expanded edition has been fully sanctioned by all members of Patto and their representatives (for the first time ever) and is now a two CD set with thirteen bonus tracks including five out-takes from the album recording sessions (two previously unreleased) and eight previously unreleased BBC session recordings from 1971 including a legendary session for the BBC Radio One In Concert series in March 1971 (featuring guest guitarist Bernie Holland) and a session for Sounds of the Seventies from June 1971.

HOPPER / DEAN / TIPPETT / GALLIVAN - Mercy Dash (HST 130; UK) The 2nd and much more obscure release by this free jazz/fusion supergroup, with Hugh Hopper-bass, Elton Dean - alto & saxello, Keith Tippett - piano & electric piano and Joe Gallivan - drums & drum synths. Reissued once before on CD, but unavailable for something near a decade now, this combines Canterbury-ish jazz rock with the more outward bound stylings of Elton & Keith. MIKE BLOOMFIELD and MARK NAFTALIN - Live At The Record Plant 1973 (Air Cuts 8032; UK) Mike Bloomfield and Mark Naftalin, live at the Record Plant, Sausalito on April 22nd, 1973. Although blues-rock guitar great Mike Bloomfield had retreated from the spotlight in the early 1970s, he continued to play in low-key settings such as the performance on this CD. Recorded at Sausalito's Record Plant on April 22, 1973 for broadcast on KSAN-FM in San Francisco, the performance also feature longtime collaborator Mark Naftalin on piano. Only one of the songs from the set would make its way to a later release from Bloomfield. The entire broadcast is presented here, digitally remastered, with background liners and rare archival photos.

DELANEY & BONNIE AND FRIENDS With DUANE ALLMAN - Livin' On The Open Road: Live At The A&R Recording Studios 1971 (Air Cuts 8064; UK) Delanie & Bonnie And Friends, live from the A&R Recording Studios, New York on July 22nd, 1971. By the summer of 1971, Delaney and Bonnie were internationally renowned for their exciting rock/soul hybrid, and their uncanny ability to attract collaborators of the highest ability. This remarkable session was captured live at A&R Studios in New York for broadcast on WABC-FM. It finds them supported by a host of fine musicians, including Duane Allman (giving one of his last performances), Gregg Allman, and King Curtis, and culminates in an epic rendition of "Only You Know & I Know". Duane Allman is featured on "Come On In My Kitchen", "Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad", "Poor Elijah", and "The Ghetto". The entire original WABC-FM broadcast is presented here, professionally remastered, with background notes and images.

THE BYRDS - The Broadcast Archive (TBA 6054; EEC) This charming triple disc set includes a host of rare live broadcasts from The Byrds, or from main-man Roger McGuinn, recorded between 1968 and 1991. On the first disc, two different shows from '68 are featured, both starring the admirable, albeit fleeting, talents of Gram Parsons. Firstly their legendary gig from the Piper Club in Rome on 2nd May, and secondly their Ardent Studios, Baton Rouge, broadcast from 18th April. The second CD has the band's Fillmore West appearance from 15th June 1969 and their show at the Bridges Auditorium in Claremont CA from the same year. Completing this set, on the third and final CD, is a dynamic solo show from Roger McGuinn performed at the Electric Ladyland Studios in New York in 1991, recorded while the great man was out promoting his Back From Rio album.

DELROY WILSON - Here Come The Heartaches (Kingston Sounds 067; UK) Delroy Wilson, the original "Cool Operator", was also known to many as "Teacher". A title given to him as he unselfishly taught the up-and-coming singers, including Dennis Brown, the art and delivery of singing technique. Delroy's rich tone to his voice added a depth to any song that he chose to sing. Delroy Wilson (b.1948 Kingston, Jamaica) began his musical career at the school that was Coxsone Dodd's studio One label. After a brief stop in 1969, which saw Delroy working for producer Sonia Pottinger's Tip Top label, he was producing such hits including "It Hurts" and "Put Yourself In My Place". The 1970s saw Delroy Wilson's arrival at Bunny "Striker" Lee's door and what would result in a winning formula, scoring hit after hit. It is from this great period in Delroy's career that Kingston Sounds have compiled this selection of killer tunes, cut with the drum and bass rhythm kings themselves, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Such classics as "Who Care", "Can I Change Your Mind", "Get Ready", "You Must Believe Me", and the timeless title track to this collection, "Here Come The Heartaches". An album of great tracks cut with "The Hitmaker from Jamaica", Bunny Lee and his team. A match made in heaven. CD version includes four bonus tracks.

CARL STONE - Electronic Music From The Seventies And Eighties (Unseen Worlds 015; USA) "This 3LP set contains a selection of seven early works by American composer Carl Stone, all previously unpublished except for 'Shing Kee,' which appeared on the 1992 New Albion CD release, Mom's. Notorious, formerly elusive recordings like 'Sukothai,' 'Shibucho,' and 'Dong Il Jang' exemplify how Stone masterfully guided his art through the transition period when New Music exited the loft scene of the 1970s for a stab at commercial presence in the 1980s, satisfying both impulses by fusing his compositional ambition with systems of live performance that were simultaneously pop savvy, commercial suicide, and technologically and aesthetically forward thinking. His live performance practice, documented here in a carefully restored archival recording of 'Kuk Il Kwan' at The Kitchen in 1981, has merged seamlessly with today's computer-driven methods. The earliest works of this collection, 'LIM' and 'Chao Praya,' realized on the Buchla 200, date to the early 1970s while Stone was a student of James Tenney and Morton Subotnick at CalArts, a rare glimpse of Stone working with purely electronic source material. PAT THOMAS - The Elephant Clock of Al Jazari (Otoroku 019; UK) Recorded live at OTO in May 2015, The Elephant Clock Of Al Jazari comprises four typically genre-defying and sonically dexterous pieces from one of the UK's best pianists. In Thomas's own words: "The title for this album, was inspired by the incredible automatic water clock invented by Badi' al-Zaman ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari. Al Jazari refers to the fact he was born in Al Jazira which lies between the Tigris and the Euphrates in what is now Northern Iraq. Badi al Zaman means prodigy of the age. He is known by historians of technology as the father of modern robotics. The Elephant Clock at seven meters high is a testament to his engineering genius, it utilizes Greek water raising technology, combined with an Indian elephant, Egyptian phoenix, Arabian figures, Persian carpet and Chinese Dragons celebrating the diversity of cultures in the world. This and other marvels of engineering can be found in his Book of the Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices translated by Donald Hill (Pakistan Hijra Council). Over 50 devices are mentioned. Amongst them the first analog computer, his remarkable Castle Clock, however, the debt the world owes this Muslim genius is found in his remarkable water raising devices, particularly water raising device number '4' where for the first time a crank connecting rod system is used. The crank is considered to be the most important single mechanical device after the wheel, by 1206 this is found fully developed in Jazari`s machines predating Francesco di Giorgio Martini by three centuries. 'For Al Haytham' is dedicated to the great polymath genius who wrote the great book on vision, the first person to give us a true understanding of how we see. 'Lubb' is an Arabic word meaning innermost consciousness whilst to conclude proceedings 'Done' is loosely based on a well-known standard."
