This Week's Dynamite Discs Begin with this Great New Quartet:

SIMON BARKER / HENRY KAISER / BILL LASWELL / RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA - Mudang Rock (Fractal Music 2018-801; USA) Featuring Henry Kaiser in guitar, Rudresh Mahanthappa on alto sax, Bill Laswell on electric bass and Simon Barker on drums plus Soo-Yeon Lyuh on hargum (Korean fiddle), Tania Chen on piano and Danielle DeGruttola on cello. Practically every week, West Coast guitar great, Henry Kaiser sends me a sample (cover art and/or music) of some project he is working on that will be released in a few months time. Yesterday, Mr. Kaiser sent me an excerpt of a violin solo played by Tracy Silverman of an original Mahavishnu Orchestra song. A future release on Cuneiform, a tribute to early John McLaughlin?!? For the past few years, Mr. Kaiser has been releasing dozens of discs on several labels: Fractal, BPA, Split Rock and Cuneiform. Each one has different personnel, different intentions or directions and each one is great in different ways. We got the promo for this one last month and I have been playing it consistently ever since. Mr. Kaiser and Mr. Laswell have worked together over many years with bands/projects: Material, Golden Palominos and Mad World Music (no recordings), all in the mid-1980’s. More recently Kaiser and Laswell have worked together with Wadada Leo Smith (’Najwa’ CD on TUM). For this session they have chosen two other strong musicians: saxist Rudresh Mahanthappa, who we know well and drummer, Simon Barker, who I didn’t know until very recently. From reading the notes that Mr. Kaiser sent us, it seems as if Mr. Kaiser & the rest of the quartet were inspired by Korean music. Australian drummer, Simon Barker, an educator & drummer, has studied Korean drumming at length, hence he often at the center of the storm here. On the opening track, “Orange Kut”, it is Barker’s propulsive drumming that pushes the quartet higher and higher with some exciting soloing from both Mr. Kaiser’s guitar and Mr. Mahanthappa’s alto sax. On “Logarythm”, Mr. Mahanthappa whips up a furious blast of M-Base like post-bop/funk, while the guitar and bass double their tight lines together. For, “The Story of Changes”, a Korean musician named Soo-Yeon Lyuh is added on Haegum, a 2 string Korean fiddle of sorts, with Mr. Barker slowly adding his own Korean-inspired grooves underneath. Each piece the quartet explore different combinations, different rhythms. Hence the results are diverse and consistently engaging. If you want to read more about the intentions behind this session, please to go the DMG website to look these up. The music is strong, spirited and inventive throughout and like most Henry Kaiser CDs, very long as well! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

Three Great New Discs from Relative Pitch:

PAUL ROGERS / OLAF RUPP / FRANK PAUL SCHUBERT - Three Stories about Rain Sunlight and the Hidden Soil (Relative Pitch 1074; USA) Featuring Frank Paul Schubert on soprano sax, Olaf Rupp on guitar and Paul Rogers on seven string double bass. It has been a while since we’ve heard anything from UK contrabassist Paul Rogers (2 years), who lives in South France and has worked at length with Paul Dunmall and Keith Tippett in Mujician. Berlin-based guitarist Olaf Rupp has been around for a couple of decades and has more than a dozen discs of solos, duos and trios on labels: FMP, Grob and JazzWerkStatt. German saxist, Frank Paul Schubert, has also remained below the radar but has worked with Alex Von Schlippenbach, Paul Dunmall and Willi Kellers.
This disc was recorded in a studio in Berlin in July of 2017. The sound on this disc is extremely warm, clean and well produced. Paul Rogers, who has a custom-made 7-string bass & bow, has an extraordinary, completely distinctive sound. Although Mr. Rogers and Mr. Rupp have never recorded together (as far as I know), they work extremely well together, coaxing similar sounds on their respective stringed instruments. When the tempo becomes a flurry, it is difficult to tell them apart. Mr. Schubert also seems like a perfect partner, his soprano weaving in and out, while the strings dazzle us with their frenzied interaction. There is quite a bit of quiet, restrained improv which sounds wonderful since it so carefully well executed, tight, thoughtful, organic. There are also some intense, explosive moments, when the sh*t hits the fan, but these are interspersed within a strong connected body of work which flows just right. At nearly 70 minutes long, this is quite a bit to digest but I must admit that I was consistently mesmerized throughout its entire length. Considering how much great music has already been released on the Relative Pitch label, this disc remains near the top of the heap so dig in now! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

AB BAARS / KAJA DRAKSLER / JOE WILLIAMSON - Fish-Scale Sunrise - No Queen Rises (Relative Pitch 1075; USA) Featuring Ab Baars on tenor sax & clarinet, Kaja Draksler piano and Joe Williamson on bass. Longtime ICP Orchestra reedman, Ab Baars, has several of his own bands/projects which can be found on the Wig label, run by his wife, Ig Henneman. In recent years Mr. Baars has been collaborating with a number of tother creative spirits: Ingrid Laubrock & Tom Rainey, Terrie Ex and Nicola Hein. Slovenia pianist, Kaja Draksler, has several fine disc out on Clean Feed, including an excellent octet which includes Mr. Baars. Berlin-based bassist Joe Williamson also keeps busy working with: Duck Baker, Tobias Delius, Eddie Prevost and the band Trapist.
Mr. Baars wrote most of the pieces on this disc except for a couple of trio improvs. It took a little while to adjust to what is exactly going on here since some of it sounds pretty free and then the trio will break into unexpected written section. A good deal of this music is quite restrained, as if we must wait for something to happen or erupt. At one point the trio break into a Broadway show tune (?!?) for a short bit before jumping into a swell free section with Mr. Baars on clarinet. There are a handful of obviously written pieces which really stand out. “No Queen Rises”, sounds a bit like the Jimmy Giuffre Trio (the same instrumentation here as well), a sort of third stream, chamber-jazz unit who were under-recognized at the time but remain influential to those in the know. On “The First Sea,” the trio keep balancing between tight fractured bits with some sparse episodes, the single note of the piano ringing like an alarm. The subtly and sparseness here is often taken for granted and takes time to get used to. We have to look at the big picture to see/hear the way this disc fits together. I noticed that me over-anxious mood got in the way of my appreciation at times. I had to turn the AC off and listen closely, only then are riches revealed. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

KEEFE JACKSON / BENJAMIN VERGARA / JIM BAKER / PHIL SUDDERBERG - The Hallowed Plant (Relative Pitch 1073; USA) Featuring Keefe Jackson on tenor & sopranino saxes & bass clarinet, Benjamin Vergara on trumpet, Jim Baker on piano & synth and Phil Sudderberg on drums. The Relative Pitch label has a knack for finding creative spirits from varied scenes, some known and other not, and then unleashing the unexpected results. Two members of this quartet, Mr. Jackson & Mr. Baker, are active members of the Chicago creative music scene with many discs under their collective belts. It turns out that Benjamin Vergara is a Chilean trumpeter who has performed Morton Feldman and who has been working with Chicago musicians for the past few years. The only thing I know about drummer Phil Sudderberg is that he is a member of a post-rock band called Marker with Ken Vandermark as a member. This disc was recorded in a studio in Chicago in December of 2013. Starting with “The Halloween Plant”, the quartet begins spiraling freely, tight and intense, the trumpet and tenor sax swirling together with a cushion of piano & drum interaction underneath. Mr. Vergara has that ever-changing Nate Wooley-like creative spirit, using a mute quietly in one section and then spinning out lines quickly in the next part. On the second piece, the quartet lays back with some somber, smokey trumpet and piano, like an unexpectedly mellow scene from a film that we are watching. On one piece the sopranino sax and trumpet play odd fractured lines around one another, the vibe is unsettling yet evocative of what is happen now around us. The last long piece is a spacious, chilled out, sparse, haunting, thoughtful yet somehow hypnotic work which seems to go for a long time yet calming casts a spell over all of collective minds. It take some time to get used to its numbing flow yet flows just right like a magic carpet ride through the inner pathways. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

DAVE REMPIS / TOMEKA REID / JOSHUA ABRAMS - Ithra (Aerophonic 019; USA) Featuring Dave Rempis on alto & tenor saxes, Tomeka Reid on cello and Josh Abrams on double bass. This session was recorded at Elastic Arts in Chicago in December of 2017. The irrepressible reeds wiz, Dave Rempis, is back with two great new discs on his own Aerophonic label. Mr. Rempis, who used to be the other frontline saxist in the Vandermark 5, started his label around 2012 and is now closing in on his 20th release. Outside of Ballister and Rempis’ Percussion Quartet, the personnel on each disc features an assortment of Chicago’s finest, along with a few well selected outsiders: Nate Wooley, Lasse Marhaug and Paal Nilssen-Love.
For this disc Mr. Rempis, has selected two excellent string players: Ms. Tomeka Reid on cello and Mr. Joshua Abrams on contrabass. Both are multi-bandleaders, composers and busy collaborators on their own. Both have kept high profiles over the last few years. Ms. Reid is currently a member a the Art Ensemble of Chicago, while Mr. Abrams leads his own group: Natural Information Society. This is a well-balanced trio in which all three members are integral and work righteously together. I dig the way the trio take their time to stretch out and weave different notes or lines around one another. Unexpected harmonies are created as certain notes are slowly bent upwards or downwards. I like the way both Rempis and Abrams seem to shadow each other rhythmically while Ms. Reid does a fine job of interweaving several different lines in between the connected pulse or flow. There is a great section where both strings are bowing together and creating that spiritual jazz vibe while Rempis wails like a ghost on top. Both strings do a great job of complementing each other and often switching roles midstream. There is something relaxed or calm at the center of this session as if the trio were in no hurry and took the time to listen closely and combine forces in a most magical way. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

DAVE REMPIS / JASPER STADHOUDERS / FRANK ROSALY - Icoci (Aerophonic 018; USA) Featuring Dave Rempis on alto & tenor saxes, Jasper Stadhouders on guitar & electric bass and Frank Rosaly on drums. This disc was recorded live in Amsterdam in December of 2017. Mr. Rempis continues to forge varied alliances with musicians from Chicago (Mr. Rosaly) and the Netherlands (Mr. Stadhouders). Stadhouders is a younger musician who has worked with/in Cactus Truck (w/ John Dikeman), Made to Break (w/ Ken Vandermark) and the Bureau of Atomic Energy (w/ Teun Verbruggen). Longtime Chicago drummer, Frank Rosaly, can be found on more the 50 discs from a diverse bunch: Josh Abrams, Jason Adasiewicz and Jason Stein.
On the opposite of the dial, is this session… an intense blast of post-punk energy, tight, intense, throttling… Mr. Stadhouders plays smoking’ electric bass with Mr. Rosaly’s tight, powerful, brutal drumming and Mr. Rempis blasting out on sax. This music erupts in bursts with quiet sections in between the blasting parts. Mr. Rempis is the central voice, keeping the flow going, the rhythm team tightly keeping pace wherever he goes, a strong match of free spirits. When Mr. Stadhouders switches to guitar, his playing is brittle and brutal, blistering righteously with Mr. Rempis equally brain blasting verve. Mr. Rempis switches to tenor midway, slowing down and carefully twisting his notes inside out, circling in on certain notes, wrenching a stark, solemn, eruption while the rhythm team slows down to a snail-like pace, taking their time to build up in tempo and power once again. Mr. Rosaly is in fine form here, pounding it out a powerful, with an immense free-rocking throb. Both new discs from Mr, Rempis show a much different side to his playing and band leading, both are essential at creative freedom from different perspectives. Bravo brave spirits, Out Demons Out! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

NICOTINA es PRIMAVERA With CAMILO ANGELES / JUAN OLIVERA / PIA HERNANDEZ / VIOLETA GARCIA / CARLOS QUEBRADA / NICOLAS del AQUILA - Perder Planetas (Buh Records BR 94; Argentina) This is the second disc from Nicotina es Primavera, a Buenos Aires-based sextet left us with their first discs a couple of years ago. The personnel features Camilo Angeles on flutes, Juan Olivera on trumpet, Violeta Garcia on cello, Pia Hernandez on piano, Carlos Quebrada on bass guitar and Nicolas del Aquila on drums. Last Sunday (9/2/18), the rhythm section here, Carlos & Nicolas, played a trio set here at DMG with Chris Pitsiokos on alto sax as their guest. That set was a blast of brutal, intense free improv and you can check a short clip on the DMG Instagram feed. What I find most interesting is that this disc sounds nothing like what happened at DMG…
Right from the opening of “Violencias”, the frontline of flute, trumpet is backed by piano, cello and a tight rhythm team. The writing and playing is intricate and superbly played. This is a mostly acoustic sextet with a great blend of chamber jazz and third stream influences. The music is often stripped down and subtle, free of any bombast that plaques much progressive rock. From what I remember, their first disc sounded like it was influenced by Henry Cow, but this disc doesn’t quite sound like any other band. By the third track, the electric bass & drums finally kick into what sounds like a freely improvised section, a blast featuring the fiery trumpet of Mr. Olivera. Somebody (Mr. Angeles perhaps) has spent a good deal of time composing this music and getting the band to play the composed parts flawlessly. The one piece which sounds mostly free, is sparse and spacious with a spirited cello solo in the last section. The last piece starts off with a startling section of screaming, a perfect intro which soon leads into more complex chamber/progressive jazz, but then morphs into a hypnotic, thumb piano and chorus segment. This is a most surprising way to bring this disc to a close, rather magical and completely unexpected. At some 36 minutes, I kinda wished that this disc was a bit longer. It does remain as one of the most enchanting discs in recent memory. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

BACK IN STOCK, Offshoot of Nicotina es Primavera:

SALES DE BANO [With MARIANO CEPEDA/CAMILO ANGELES/AGUSTIN ZUANIGH/ et al] - Horror Vacui (Viajero Inmovil 066; Argentina) Featuring Mariano Cepeda on electric guitar & effects, Camilo Angeles on flute, Agustin Zuanigh on trumpet & flugelhorn, Andres Marino on piano & Fender Rhodes, Carlos Quebrada on electric bass & compositions and Federico Isasti on drums. This is the second disc from Sales de Bano (“bath salts”) that we just in from Argentinian flutist & composer Camilo Angeles and it was released earlier this year (2016). The personnel for this sextet is the same as their previous disc, although there are a few guests like Juan Olivera (trumpet) who is from Animal Ceramico, another Argentinian band whose great disc I just reviewed as well. Two years after there last disc (‘Estrangulado el Mundo”) and Sales de Bano have grown even stronger, more spirited more inventive and more exuberant! Things begin quietly, slowly building from a more modest intro. The pieces here are just named with number in Spanish. The music blends progressive rock, chamber jazz and modern classical elements and does’t quite sound like any other band I’ve heard. Each piece goes through a series of sections which utilize the talents of all six members without resorting to very many solos. There are a few amazing solos nonetheless: guitarist Mariano Cepeda takes a long, expressive, story-like solo on “Cuatro”. “Seis” actually comes close to King Crimson-like power, with a swell, lumbering oft-kilter groove and a great mix of electric piano, electric guitar and trumpet. These pieces are extremely diverse and draw from a wealth of influences or ideas. There are so many surprising twists and turns it is hard to believe that this is just one band and not several. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

Three New Ones from the LEAP OF FAITH Collective:

LEAP OF FAITH with PEK / GLYNIS LOMON / YURI ZBITNOV / SYDNEY SMART - Fractured Symmetries (Evil Clown 9176; USA) Featuring Dave PEK on sopranino, alto, tenor & bass saxes, clarinets, tarogato, flute, harmonium, etc., Glynis Lomon on cello, aquasonics & voice and Sydnet Smart & Yuri Zbitnov on drums, percussion & metal. This disc was recorded live at Outpost 186 in Cambridge, MA in April of 2018. Since the current core members of Leap of Faith are just the trio of PEK, Ms. Lomon & Mr. Zbitnov, this quartet is one of the smaller versions of Leap of Faith. You should recognize the name of their guest drummer, Syd Smart, from records he’s made with Raphe Malik, Ted Daniel and Frank Wright.
Like most discs by Leap of Faith, this one starts off with ritualistic percussion: gongs, cymbals, bells, drums… one by one, slowly building until other instruments enter… the low-end drone of a double reed… subtle layers of percussion ever-expanding… What makes this session.set different from pst Leap of Faith is that it is often laid back,,, no weird vocals or over the top intensity. It shows another side to this band which is rarely heard. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
CD $10

LEAP OF FAITH with PEK / GLYNIS LOMON / YURI ZBITNOV / JIM WARSHAUER / ERIC DAHLMAN - Proof Theory (Evil Clown 9182; USA) Featuring Dave PEK on sopranino, alto, tenor & bass saxes, clarinets, double reeds, tarogato, flute, harmonium, etc., Glynis Lomon on cello, aquasonics & voice, Jim Warshauer on soprano & bari saxes & shenai, Eric Dahlman on trumpet, recorder, game calls & voice and Yuri Zbitnov on drums, percussion & metal. This disc is yet another smaller, quintet version of Leap of Faith, with two guest horn players. The only name I vaguely recognized is Jim Warshauer, who is also a recent disc with Rakalam Bob Moses, another Boston-based musician and professor. The set here was recorded at Outpost 186 in June of 2018. Unlike other Leap of faith discs, this one erupts intensely right from the beginning with a dense layer of percussion (gongs, bells & cymbals) plus waterphone(s) and whistles. The first solo sounds like PEK on some double reed but soon morphs into a slow moving layer of brass, bass sax and percussion. Since the three core members, Mr. Peck, Ms. Lomon and Mr. Zbitnov, are longtime veterans of dozens of Leap of Faith sets, they know when to lay back, interact and erupt in equal amounts. There are moments of frenzied activity and moments of calm contemplation and lots of time in between. Each member of this quintet take their time and get a chance to stretch out, solo and interact. Several highlights are captured throughout: when Mr. Lomon solos on frenetic plucked cello midway, there is layer of percussion for her to interact with. Midway through this, Leap of Faith evolve into their ritualistic haunting vocals section which doesn’t last very long but does a good job of taking us on our humanistic journey… Another winner..! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG
CD $12

LEAP OF FAITH with PEK / GLYNIS LOMON / YURI ZBITNOV / MIMI RAPSON / ELINOR SPEIRS - Topological Constructions (Evil Clown 9183; USA) Featuring PEK on clarinets, sopranino, alto, tenor & bass saxes, double reeds, etc, Glynis Lomon on cello, aquasonics & voice, Mimi Rapson on violin & metal, Elinor Speirs on violin and Yuri Zbitnov on drums, percussion & metal. This disc was recorded at the Evil Clown Headquarters in in June of 2018. For this disc, the three core Leap of Faith members (Pek, Lomon & Zbitnov) have added two string players, both of whom are women. The two guests here play on several previous Leap of Faith efforts so they know how to fit it and add to the ritualistic free sonic sorcery. The intro features eerie percussion: gongs & metals along with the three strings slowly interwoven. The quintet take their time so veryong gets a chance to stretch out, interact and solo. Both string players sounds great, especially when they are egged on by Ms. Lomon’s spirited cello! One of the things I like about this disc is that it moves slowly and doesn’t have some of the fireworks that some of the larger ensembles have. It is superbly recorded, warm and clean with very little hyper-intensity. Hence, if you are patient, the rewards are great! Strong medicine indeed! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

F$F [FIVE DOLLAR FERRARI] - BRAD HENKEL / DUSTIN CARLSON] - Forgotten Cities (pfMentum 128; USA) Featuring Brad Henkel on trumpet and Dustin Carlson on guitar. When guitarist, Dustin Carlson, dropped off this disc last week, he said the last time he played at DMG and left us with a previous disc from F$F was around ten years ago, when we were still on the Bowery. I know of trumpeter Brad Henkel from his work with percussionist David Grollman, Guitarist Dustin Carlson, has also worked Will McEvoy and Ben Stapp. Although this disc was recorded in a studio in Brooklyn (where both musicians reside), it was mastered by by L.A. sonic wizard, Wayne Peet, who has done quite a bit of work for the Nine Winds label. This disc features just two long works: the title track (17 a minutes) and “Between Bodies” (12:15). “Forgotten Cities” begins with eerie drones created by radiator-hissing trumpet and slowly strummed guitar. Mr. Carlson strums a couple of dark chords over and over with Mr. Henkel’s haunting trumpet in the distance, like a foghorn in floating in the mist. As Mr. Carlson strums over and over, he creates a most hypnotic undertow, occasionally hitting the strings above the top or below the bottom bridge. The different layers of drones are carefully manipulated to create a mesmerizing aura. Eventually Mr. Carlson begins to add another layer bent notes by tapping on the strings, creating a somewhat disorienting alien world. On the second piece, Mr. Henkel concentrates on haunting long tones while Carlson adds a weird layer bent-note ominousness. The overall effect is one of floating in a dreamworld where nothing it quite distinct yet we still can feel the walls holding our imaginations within. Time to invite this duo to play here at DMG once again, it has been some ten plus years. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, DMG

DON CHERRY TRIO With KARL BERGER / JACQUE THOLLOT - Studio 105, Paris 1967 (Hi Hat HH 3101; UK) Don Cherry Trio, live from Studio 105, Maison de l'ORTF, Paris on March 18th, 1967. Having played with a who's who of cutting-edge American jazz musicians (including Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp, and Pharoah Sanders), by the mid-60s Don Cherry was spending increasing amounts of time in Europe. There he developed his concept of a symphony for improvisers, wherein form was more important than melody. This remarkable set was broadcast on French radio station ORTF, in Paris, March 1967, and is a fiery document of the trumpeter at his peak. The entire broadcast is presented here, digitally remastered, with background notes and images. Personnel: Don Cherry - cornet, piano, bamboo flute, gong; Karl Berger - vibes, marimba, piano, celeste, percussion; Jacques Thollot - drums, bells, timbales. 54 minutes

KENNY BURRELL & THE WEST COAST ALL STARS with JEROME RICHARDSON / CONTE CONDOLI / THAD JONES / FRANK FOSTER / SHELLY MANNE… - Laguna Beach - Friends Of Jazz Festival 1979 (Hi Hat 3085; UK) Hi Hat presents a newly released archival recording from Kenny Burrell & the West Coast All Stars, Laguna Beach - Friends Of Jazz Festival 1979. This superb set was performed at California's first annual Friends of Jazz Festival, and broadcast as part National Public Radio's Jazz Alive series. It captures veteran guitarist Kenny Burrell at the top of his game, tackling a selection of standards in typically breezy fashion, backed by the cream of the country's jazz talent. The entire National Public Radio broadcast is presented here, digitally remastered, with background notes and images. Personnel: Kenny Burrell - guitar; Jerome Richardson - sax, flute; Conte Candoli - trumpet; Thad Jones - flugelhorn; Frank Foster - tenor sax; Art Hillery - keyboards; Leroy Vinnegar - bass; Shelly Manne - drums.

Modern Classical and Electronic Music:

RORY COWAL // MUHAL RICHARD ABRAMS / DANIEL GOODE / JAMES TENNEY / KRIS DAVIS / DAVID MAHLER / et al - Clusters: American Piano Explorations (New World Records 80800; USA) Rory Cowal is a distinctive pianist, one who draws liberally on classical chops, ample experience with improvisation, and a predilection for the new and uncharted. This makes him especially attractive to composers who wish to blur the boundaries between traditional styles and genres. A musical adventurer at heart, Cowal seems drawn to challenging and unusual projects. The eight pieces on this CD reflect this willingness to experiment, to not just play the same old (now canonic) warhorses of the American experimental tradition, but to expand our awareness of what that tradition might include over a large period of time, from Johanna Magdalena Beyer (1888–1944) to Kris Davis (b. 1980), with their adventurous colleagues Muhal Richard Abrams (1930–2017), Daniel Goode (b. 1936), David Mahler (b. 1944), Thomas Peterson (1931–2006), and James Tenney (1934–2006) somewhere in between. The pieces recorded here span from 1931, a time characterized by “ultramodernism” and the theoretical exploration of dissonant counterpoint, to 2018, and the vast influences bombarding young composers in the twenty-first century’s oversaturation of digital resources. None of the pieces included here has been previously recorded. Working therefore with no point of reference but the score, Cowal had the special challenge of envisioning them, and bringing them to life based solely on his own understanding of their possibilities.

BERNARD PARMEGIANI - Les Soleils De L'ile De Paques / La Brulure De Mille Soleils (Wrwtfww Records 008-9; Switzerland) WRWTFWW Records announce the release of two never-released-before soundtracks by French award-winning composer, audio experimenter, electroacoustic, and musique concrète magician, and all-around sound visionary Bernard Parmegiani, sourced from the original reels, and with English and French liner notes. Les Soleils De l'Île De Pâques (1972), by French director Pierre Kast, is a sci-fi feature which secured itself a well-deserved place in the pantheon of mysterious cult films thanks to hallucinatory (and superb) cinematography, exploration of supernatural phenomenon and occult symbolism, and one hell of a trippy atmosphere. La Brûlure De Mille Soleils (1965) also comes from Pierre Kast, but this time with the help of none other than writer, photographer, multimedia artist, homme à tout faire Chris Marker -- notably known for films La Jetée (1962), A Grin Without a Cat (1977), and Sans Soleil (1983) -- who edited this bizarre short to brain-melting results that live up to the promises of its synopsis: A depressed millionaire poet, accompanied by his cat Marcel and a sign language robot, travels in time to shake a persistent feeling of ennui and falls hopelessly in love with a woman from another planet. 'Nuff said! A renowned member of the prestigious GRM (Groupe De Recherches Musicales, the French equivalent of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop) and frequent collaborator of Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, and Pierre Henry, among others, Bernard Parmegiani does what he does best with these two rare soundtracks: create moods with electroacoustic experimentation, elevating the weird and hypnotic with soundscapes from other dimensions, and cementing his status as a true innovator. CD version comes in an all-in-one digipack.

CARL WEINGARTEN - Living In The Distant Present (Azure Vista Records 007; Denmark) Azure Vista present a reissue of Carl Weingarten's Living In The Distant Present, previously only released on cassette in 1985 on Weingarten's own Multiphase Records. The album is a rare treat for fans of guitar ambient, tape loops, and the experimental side of new age music. When Carl Weingarten is one of the unsung heroes of American minimalism. Even though he's been active for close to four decades, his work is just now starting to receive the praise it deserves. On Living Ín The Distant Present slowly shifting synth patterns is joined with his signature guitar playing -- a tranquil, stretched-out sound that blur the lines between played and processed, occasionally sonically closer to violins or flutes than guitars. Incredibly sparse and evocative, there's a tasteful zen-quality to these 12 tracks. Weingarten's compositions appear both timeless and tranquil. Living In The Distant Present bridges the gap between the most cosmic krautrock of the 1970s, the experimental American new age music from the 1980s, and modern day minimalism such as Windy & Carl and Christopher Willits. In his concern for sonic texture Weingarten's music resembles Brian Eno's ambient records, especially his collaborative efforts with Robert Fripp, where guitars are gradually looped and processed into shimmering clouds of sound. MARINO ZUCCHERI - Milan Rai Studio Di Fonologia Musicale 1955-83 (Die Schactel 033-2; Italy) Milan Rai Studio Di Fonologia Musicale 1955-83 presents the proceedings of the homage organized at Milan's Museo del Novecento from June 21, 2016 to January 14, 2017. This exposition (consisting of an exhibition, seminars, concerts, and listening and film sessions) was dedicated to the sound engineer Marino Zuccheri, the main collaborator of Milan's famous electronic music studio, the Rai Studio di Fonologia Musicale. Marino's friends included almost all the major composers of the second half of the 20th century: Berio, Maderna, Nono, Castiglioni, Donatoni, Manzoni, Negri, Gaslini, Gentilucci, Paccagnini, Togni, Cage, Stockhausen, and Pousseur, among others.
The enclosed CD features Zuccheri's first piece, "Plastico" (1961), composed in collaboration with Lorenzo Dall'Oglio, published here for the first time ever. The book includes a large selection of Zuccheri's graphic designs, as a testimony to his multifaceted artistic personality, as well as concert diagrams, building schemes of the electronic machineries, in-edit documents, and photos, and much more. Standard edition comes with a 160-page book; silver cover with flaps - English-only edition.

LAPRE - Auferstehung: Elektronische Musik aus Berlin 1983/1984 (Bureau B 302; Germany) In 1983, electronic musician Rudolf Langer (Tyndall) and guitarist Peter Preuß teamed up to form a duo by the name of LAPRE (LAnger PREuß). Aligned with the second generation of the Berlin School, their output is incredibly varied: from repetitive sequencer patterns via playfully cheerful synth pop all the way to atmospheric, hypnotic minor key expanses. It's all there. By 1984, LAPRE had released two tapes and a 12" vinyl. Bureau B's compilation presents the most compelling tracks from these releases. Rudolf Langer began his musical career as one half of Tyndall. The duo released four albums on Sky Records between 1979 and 1983. By the time the two musicians reached the fourth album (BB 289CD/LP), they were barely on speaking terms, so each recorded one side of the LP on his own. The split from his former partner turned out to be a liberating experience for Rudolf Langer, both in a personal and artistic sense. As luck would have it, Langer was riding home one night with a colleague from work, Peter Preuß, and a tape machine was lying on the back seat of the car. It turned out that Preuß was also a musician, a guitarist in fact, and they decided to hook up for a jam session. The results were hugely promising and a plan was made to record together. What should they call the project? The answer was simple -- take the first letters of their names. LAnger PREuß = LAPRE. They worked on track after track after track and produced two tapes over the next two years ("Tedan" in 1983 and "Flokati" in 1984), each numbering 30?50 copies, intended for sale at concerts. A 12" single on their own label (Oeso) followed later in 1984. Although guitar features on every track, LAPRE's early recordings relate to the Berlin School, with their music, specifically their use of synthesizers, echoing the tradition of Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, et al. LAPRE's mix of analog synthesizers, acoustic guitars and drum computers saw the duo occupy a previously uncharted niche in electronic music. How wonderful to see these recordings being made available to a wider audience over thirty years later. First time CD release for all tracks.

THIGHPAULSANDRA - The Lepore Extrusion (KLanggallerie 273; Austria) "Born in Pontypridd, South Wales to a musical family, Thighpaulsandra developed an interest in modern classical and electronic music at an early age. Whilst still in school he formed an avant-garde rock group incorporating influences from his admiration for experimental music pioneers John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Through experiments with his group The Rachel Dennis Sisters he was offered a job in a local recording studio which eventually led to him becoming the manager and house engineer. One of his many clients was former The Teardrop Explodes frontman Julian Cope who, after learning of their mutual appreciation of krautrock and electronics, invited him to join his current group as keyboard player. During Thighpaulsandra's tenure with Cope he garnered the attention of Coil's John Balance. After an introduction via his management, the two became great friends and Thighp was asked to join Coil shortly after. Thighp has also released several solo albums, some of which shift between experimental and rock, others, like The Lepore Extrusion, are drone albums. Originally released through Brainwashed, this album was very hard to find outside the US and soon deleted. For this re-issue, Thighpaulsandra has added a bonus track that wasn't featured on the original release."

AL DOUM & THE FARYDS - Spirit Rejoin (Black Sweat Records BS 048; Italy) Listening to the music of Al Doum & The Faryds is always like staying in the pristine nature of an exotic island, in the sacred harmony of a new organic society; imaging all brothers and sisters singing and dancing in the unity of the brotherhood. This is the message of love and joy that pervade this fourth album, Spirit Rejoin. Moving towards accents of jazz ancestry, the Faryds absorb and re-elaborate - with remarkable insights -disparate elements and influences of electric jazz of the '70s (Miles Davis, Dr. John) and spiritual jazz (Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders, Don Cherry), marrying them with the forceful instances of Afro-free (Pyramids, Alkebu-Lan). The music celebrates a new collective soul, a dancing cathartic ritual with birds, plants, and all the animals, together in the circle of devotion. A journey in the total pranic breath.”

GBOYEGA ADELAJA- Colourful Environment (Listeningstone 006; USA) Livingstone Studio present a reissue of Gboyega Adelaja's Colourful Environment, originally released in 1979. Fresh from touring with Hugh Masekela -- The Boy's Doin' It (1975) -- Gboyega Adelaja goes into the lab to drop heavy keyboard science on his Moog and Fender Rhodes. Its Joe Sample meets the Afro funk of BLO. With names like Jake Sollo on guitars, Mike Odumusu (BLO, Osibisa) on bass guitar, and Gasper Lawal on percussion, this is a top quality, Afro funk -- an all-stars affair that shines from the inspired interventions, masterly arrangements to the sublime production.
Adelaja on the period of recording: "I was already following Hugh Masekela when I met him, he was an outstanding musician and I knew of his collaboration with Hedzoleh, that band brought him nearer to many of us, because he was playing authentic African melodies with the Hedzoleh sound which was mostly percussion oriented. Yes I knew about Hugh's music before I met him. In fact when we started playing together, he insisted that I stay with him in our three bedroom apartment, other members of the band had their own apartments, but Hugh and myself shared the same three bedroom apartment". "We were touring, under Casablanca owned by Neil Boggart, we toured as professional musicians, flying to our gigs. There was a time when we were touring with George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic we had two luxury buses deployed for our use. We made many friends where ever we went to play, we met many big and popular musicians who came to watch our shows, the Spinners came to see us in Detroit, we met Wayne Shorter of Weather Report, Freddie Hubbard, we played a gig with Herbie Hancock at the Carnegie Hall New York City, we toured almost all the 50 States of the US."

IPEK GORGUN - Ecce Homo (Touch 106; UK) Ipek Gorgun's Ecce Homo explores the lighter and darker shades of the human psyche, behavior, and existence, and humanity's ability to create beauty and destruction. What lies in the essence of such complexity has become a core idea for the album, while Gorgun seeks to figure out if there is a true meaning to being human, and human being. Starting with "Neroli" as a human fascination with nature and finalizing with "To Cross Great Rivers"; a never-ending, hopeless dream of the mankind to conquer and control the world, the album reflects the contemplations of a spectator being exposed to the human civilization, and witnessing human activity, including his/her own. Trying to acquire a glimpse of the multiple layers of such narrative, the sound of the album aims to present a diversity of the sonic spectrum, with tracks varying between ambient and noisy landscapes. Ipek Gorgun is an electronic music composer currently enrolled in the doctoral program of Sonic Arts at Istanbul Technical University's Center for Advanced Studies in Music. After graduating from Bilkent University with a degree in political science, she completed her Master's degree studies in philosophy at Galatasaray University. As a bass player and vocalist for projects and bands such as Bedroomdrunk and Vector Hugo between 2001-2013, she also performed in an opening gig for Jennifer Finch from L7 and Simon Scott from Slowdive, as well as performing live with David Brown from Brazzaville. Besides group projects and solo performances, she also composed the soundtrack for the documentary Yok Anasinin Soyadi (Mrs. His Name) directed by Hande Cayir in 2012, portraying Turkish women's struggle for keeping their original surnames after marriage. Her debut album Aphelion was self-released in February, 2016. In 2017, she released a collaborative album from Halocline Trance, with Canadian producer Ceramic TL (aka Egyptrixx) entitled Perfect Lung (HTRA 007LP). Ipek Gorgun also practices performance, street, and abstract photography.

Another CD Sale - Sun Ra CD’s & Rare Progressive Discs from the ReR/Art Yard Stable:

SUN RA and His ARKESTRA - Cosmo Sun Connection (ReR SR1; UK) "A classic Saturn experimental studio/rehearsal release, starting with eight delirious minutes of kora and piano frame -- almost certainly the Strange Strings instruments, whatever they were. And then Ra's signature clavinet of the period and an unidentifiable double-reed instrument, probably played by Marshall Allen. Enter the xylophone. I sense you're getting the picture; all in all, 21 great later-1960s minutes. Followed by a lyrical standard with Ra playing acoustic piano and John Gilmore saying what has to be said: a live recording, as is the next. Congas, bongos, Ra on Rocksichord and singing in the Ra-African style. Some fine straight ahead jazz follows -- with serious electric guitar and great tenor playing. And so it goes on, winding up with full-on Space is the Place Angel rant from Ra -- not the best sound, but heartfelt. A fine, eclectic collection with enough gems."

SUN RA & His OMNIVERSE JET-SET ARKESTRA - Beyond the Purple Star Zone [aka Immortal Being] Oblique Parallax (Art Yard CD 05; UK) "Beyond The Purple Star Zone [which Art Yard had previously reissued on LP] and Oblique Parallax are the two El Saturn LPs originally released from a week's residency by Sun Ra at the Detroit Jazz Center in the last week of 1980. Just about everything that the Arkestra played that week was captured on tape -- ending with a marathon series of three concerts on New Year's Eve 1980, when the music extended over nearly eight hours, and included over ninety identifiable compositions. There was scarcely any duplication of compositions throughout this marathon night, even though each concert was played before a different audience, the auditorium cleared between sets. The title track, 'Beyond The Purple Star Zone,' is extracted from the second of these three New Year's Eve concerts. In essence, it's a French horn trio, involving Sun Ra, Vincent Chancey and a percussionist. As well as featuring on this LP as the title track, it was used again by Sun Ra when in 1982 he issued another Saturn LP, Oblique Parallax, to release more material from these December 1980 concerts. On this second outing, 'Beyond The Purple Star Zone' was spliced together with music played on 30 December to form the piece known as 'Journey Stars Beyond.' 'Rocket Number Nine' also comes from the second of the three New Year's Eve concerts, and is a feature for Ra and the Arkestra's vocal dexterity, and in a quintessential Sun Ra touch melds other compositions in with this tune. There's a Sun Ra poem embedded -- 'The Space Age Is Here To Stay,' as well as fragments of a Gospel piece. There's also an early appearance of another Sun Ra composition, 'Face The Music,' which crops up occasionally in 1970s and 1980s concerts, before coming into its own around 1990, when, with a full instrumental arrangement, it was featured frequently. Considering the dozens of hours of surviving concert tape from this Detroit residency, it's significant that none of the recordings yet auditioned contain the material used on this album for 'Immortal Being,' 'Romance on a Satellite' or 'Planetary Search.' It is possible -- but uncertain -- that these are performances from this residency, the sonics are very close to those of the first two pieces from this album. At least one Detroit concert (plus one workshop) remain to be researched. However, the presence of an electric bass player and electric guitarist on 'Romance on a Satellite' suggests that these pieces may have a different origin. All are fine pieces, for the moment they keep their mysteries." - Chris Trent

SUN RA & His INTERGALACTIC MYTH SCIENCE SOLAR ARKESTRA - Nidhamu Dark Myth Equation Visitation: Live in Cairo, Egypt 12/12,16,17/71 (Art Yard CD 09; UK) In 1971, in Denmark, at the end of a tour, Sun Ra suddenly decided to take his whole band to Egypt. They had no concerts and no contacts there but Ra sold some recording rights to Black Lion to pay for the tickets and they flew out. They were stopped at customs and their instruments were temporarily impounded but they were let through as tourists. Then they booked into a hotel facing the pyramid at Giza. Word got to Hartmut Geerken, then working at the Goethe institute, and he quickly threw a concert together at his house in Heliopolis, for which Brigadier Salah Ragab borrowed army instruments for the Arkestra to play (he was later disciplined for it). Ra's Moog had made it through customs and a Tiger Organ was hired. One of the audience (of 25) booked the band in for a Cairo TV session the following day. Then Ragab persuaded the Ministry of Culture to book a concert at the Balloon Theatre (for another tiny audience: only the first 4 rows were occupied). Two more concerts followed - at the American University (for the cab fare) and the Versailles Club. They stayed for more than a fortnight, making a film while they were there and finally, by band-members selling various personal items, raised the money to fly home. These 2 CDs [Horizons and Nidhamu/Dark Myth Equation] contain all the released material from that visit (3 LPs) as well as unreleased material from these same sessions. Nidhamu & Dark Myth Visitation Equation complete the Egypt trilogy. Most remarkable is Nidhamu (the second release of the series, half recorded at the Balloon Theatre, the other half at Hartmut Geerken's house in Heliopolis) - a remarkable document: austere and very out there. Electric keyboards and an eerie Discipline No.11 set the scene, and after some solo Moog there's a spooky miniature Discipline No.15 introducing another long Moog and keyboards solo: 35 pretty abstract minutes that just slip by. Dark Myth Visitation Equation follows (this was the first LP release, and has also been known as Sun Ra in Egypt Vol 1 and Nature's God). The first tracks are from the Cairo TV broadcast and the whole collection features more familiar groove-based pieces characteristic of the period, interspersed with Moog and electric keyboard solos. June Tyson reappears for To Nature's God and the highly eccentric Why go to the Moon?

SUN RA & His SOLAR ARKESTRA - On Jupiter (Art Yard CD 04; UK) “Originally issued as El Saturn 101679, recorded on 10/16/79, never reissued before in any form (before Artyard's prior LP edition in 2005). "On Jupiter uses more than the usual amount of post recording processing and mixing, nudging up to the jazz-rock/disco music of its time, but not getting too close. These are still eccentric, expanded, lurching musical beasts. And it's nice to hear the oboe and bassoon -- so often lost on the live concert mixes -- so prominent here. The playing is great, as ever. This release along with Sleeping Beauty are two of the more accessible Ra releases and mark a rare experiment in quasi popularity by the band. They are both also, at present, collectors' items."

SUN RA & HIS INTERGALACTIC MYTH SCIENCE SOLAR ARKESTRA - Sleeping Beauty (Art Yard CD 003; UK) One of the more delicate recordings of Sun Ra's 28-strong Arkestra, Sleeping Beauty drifts in on a cloud of cosmic dust, sounding unlike anything before or after. With drummer Luqman Ali keeping the narcotic funk, but with dreamy solos from other key Arkestra players like John Gilmore, Michael Ray, and Marshall Allen, no Sun Ra collection is complete without this LP. Inspired space-age lullaby music, originally released on Saturn Records in 1979.

SUN RA QUARTET With JOHN GILMORE/MICHAEL RAY/LUQMAN ALI - Disco 3000 (Art Yard CD 101; UK) Wonderful 1978 El Saturn recording in first-class reissue. The songs include "Disco 3000"; "Third Planet", "Friendly Galaxy", "Dance Of The Cosmo Aliens". The personnel features Sun Ra on keyboards & electronics, John Gilmore on tenor sax, Michael Ray on trumpet and Luqman Ali on drums) From the liner notes: "This whole Sun Ra Quartet project from Italy in early 1978 has a particularly 'experimental' feel, unique in a particular way in Sun Ra's huge and varied recorded output. Innovation is hardly unexpected from Sun Ra -- his music regularly pushes the envelope. However, this project represents a tryout for a different kind of music altogether, a small-group music. In the end it was a musical path Sun Ra left unexplored, it has little in the way of precedent or sequel on record. It has stood the test of time well.

SUN RA QUARTET With JOHN GILMORE / MICHAEL RAY / LUQMAN ALI - Media Dreams (aka Saturn Research): Expanded Edition (Art Yard CD 02; UK) More than twice as much material as the LP edition - the recordings on Disc Two have never been released before -ever! Extremely rare and legendary Sun Ra small group session featuring Mr. Ra on organ, John Gilmore on tenor sax, Michael Ray on trumpet and "Crumar Mainman" [a keyboard, usually played and programmed by Sun Ra; It's what is doing the "drum box" sound], Luqman Ali on drums & drum box. Recorded in Italy in 1978, about the same time this quartet did two phenomenal double albums for the Italian HORO label, New Steps and Other Voices Other Blues

STEVE LACY With DEREK BAILEY / GEORGE E LEWIS / BOBBY FEW / ROSWELL RUDD / STEVE POTTS / MAL WALDRON / MASAHIKO TOGASHI / MUHAMMAD ALI / et al - Each of these ten tracks feature Lacy in duo performances. Compiled by the soprano saxophonist, and not released until 1997, there are highlights galore throughout, making this an essential recording for any admirer of Lacy's work. Each tune (most of which were composed by Lacy) features Lacy with a different partner, including trombonists Roswell Ruddand George Lewis; percussionists Muhammad Ali and Masahiko Togashi; pianists Ulli Gumpert, Bobby Few, andMal Waldron; guitarist Derek Bailey; saxophonist Steve Potts; and vocalist Irene Aebi. While the sound is slightly subpar, the music is uniformly superb and showcases Lacy in some of his most creative and exuberant collaborations. While the material is often familiar, the results surprise and even startle, though in Lacy's inimitably tasteful way. - Steve Loewy

PICCHIO DAL POZZO - Abbiamo Tutti I Suoi Problemi (ReR PDP; UK) Released right before the group called it quits, Abbiamo Tutti I Suoi Problemi is a must-have for fans of complex avant-prog rock and Rock in Opposition, and it can also seduce open-minded fans of Italian progressive rock. The young musicians of Picchio dal Pozzo here manage to carve out a unique sound, resolutely attuned to the most progressive elements in Italian and British progressive rock, yet entirely personal and never matched afterward. Abbiamo Tutti I Suoi Problemi shares strong similarities with Unrest-era Henry Cow in the complex metrics, use of wind instruments, and overall chamber ensemble feel of pieces like "I Problemi di Ferdinando P." and "Mettiamo il Caso Che." Other reference points include Gentle Giant for the contrapuntal writing, Grand Wazoo-era Frank Zappa for the melody and guitar work in "Moderno Ballibile," Premiata Forneria Marconi for Aldo De Scalzi's vocals, and Area for simply playing this kind of music in Italy. However, this checklist is limited to comparisons, not necessarily influences, as the five musicians have clearly integrated the latter into their own songwriting. "Abbiamo Tutti i Suoi Problemi" consists of five main pieces, all mind-bogglingly complex and surprisingly rewarding after several listens, interspersed with three vignettes titled "La Sgargianza," focusing on the group's playful approach of the Italian language. The 16-minute "Mettiamo il Caso Che" is the group's magnum opus, filled with musical plot twists and clever arrangements, but there are no throwaway tracks here. These musicians had been working together for a while now and this album captures them at their creative peak. The studio sessions collected on Cuneiform's archival release Camere Zimmer Rooms are bland in comparison. The album first came out on the Italian label L'Orchestra Cooperativa in 1980. ReR Megacorp reissued it in 2006. Bob Drake did a fine remastering job, but the packaging is somewhat disappointing: one can always live without bonus tracks, but the lack of photographs and liner notes hurts. - Francois Couture

CAMBERWELL NOW [CHARLES HAYWARD / et al] - All's Well 1982-1986: Meridian/The Ghost Trade/Greenfingers (ReR DUP 22; UK) New 2006 remaster by Charles Hayward! Out of print for many, many years, it gives us great pleasure to be able to offer this out again. Excellent reissue collecting all material (two EPs and one full-length, plus one extra track culled from an old Touch cassette) by Charles Hayward's post-This Heat project, Camberwell Now. An often overlooked chapter in the career of drummer/vocalist/keyboardist/improvisor Charles Hayward, Camberwell Now continues the relentless experimentalism he championed in This Heat, though with less of an abrasive sound than he made in This Heat. This music has more of a Canturbury feel, particularly in Hayward's Wyatt-like, off-kilter vocals, and sits nicely beside Wyatt's "Old Rottenhat" - both records seamlessly blend the personal and the political with a hearty dose of resignment and melancholy. Sonically, the songs collected here fuse layers of dizzying drum work, tense guitar figures, swirling washes of ambience from cymbals, melodicas, and keyboards, and inventive tape manipulation. Long overshadowed by the band that came before it, this material is WAY overdue for reappraisal and the recognition that it so rightly deserves. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!! - Mikey "IQ" Jones @ DMG.

ROBIN WILLIAMSON / BARRY DRANSFIELD / TOM PAXTON / SHIRLEY COLLINS / JACQUI Mc SHEE et al - Old Wine New Skin (Dusk Fire 104; UK) "A diverse roster of recording artists - spanning half a century between the oldest and youngest - have contributed contemporary interpretations of traditional English songs to a new album released as a companion piece to The Folk Handbook: Working With Songs From The English Tradition.
This album compiles 17 songs from the book in performances all but one of which have been recorded in recent years; many have been recorded specially for this album and thus are unavailable elsewhere."
"New twists on old songs without modernising them. Manages to keep a very folk feel to what is a fairly dark collection of songs. These old, old songs are performed very much in the traditional way, both by young new performers and seasoned folk musicians. This is a beautiful trip back in time. Allow me to say that Lucy Wainwright-Roche's unaccompanied version of "Barbara Allen" which starts off the album (she is probably the youngest performer here) is so beautifully crystalline and affecting that it is worth the price of the album in itself. Best folk album I have brought in years by far."

THE BEVIS FROND - Inner Marshland (Cherry Red 646’ UK) “The 2001 reissue of the Bevis Frond's second album, 1987's Inner Marshland, doesn't have significantly better sound than the original Reckless CD, which had been out of print for years. (Like all of the Bevis Frond's early albums, Inner Marshland was recorded on a four-track Portastudio in Nick Saloman's bedroom, so there's a limit to how good this material can be made to sound.) However, the album does feature, in addition to extensive liner notes by Saloman himself, six previously unreleased outtakes from these 1987 sessions. It's a wonder that there were tracks left over at all, as Inner Marshland is the second full-length album Saloman had recorded in the space of a year. While one might reasonably expect this album to consist of leftovers from the sessions for Miasma, these 11 songs are largely more concise and direct than on the debut, with only the overlong backwards-tape ending of "Window Eye" succumbing to tedium. Even the seven-and-a-half-minute "Once More" never overstays its welcome, although the poetry segment (which sounds like Eric Idle reading Graeme Edge's poetry from old Moody Blues albums) might have gone by the wayside. Of the bonus tracks, "The Great Mistake," the wistful "Walking in the Lady's Garden" (featuring a great extended solo on some kind of cheap electronic keyboard), and the hard-rocking "Slave" are actually better than much of the album proper. The poppy "Run at the Sun" and the droning, trippy "Parasynquiry" are lesser efforts, though the rollicking organ instrumental "Solid Vimto" has a sort of lightweight charm.” - Stewart Mason. AMG

CATHERINE CHRISTER HENNIX - Selected Early Keyboard Works (Blank Forms/Empty Editions 002; USA) Selected Early Keyboard Works is the first in a series of planned archival records of the unheard music of Swedish composer, philosopher, poet, mathematician, and visual artist Catherine Christer Hennix, co-released by Blank Forms Editions and Empty Editions. It comes hot-on-the-heels of Traversée Du Fantasme at the Stedelijk in Amsterdam, Hennix's first solo museum exhibition in over 40 years, and coincides with both Blank Forms' publication of Poësy Matters and Other Matters, a two-volume collection of her writing, and the closing of Thresholds of Perception, a retrospective archival show of Hennix's visual work at The Empty Gallery in Hong Kong. The record also marks the first time Hennix's own music has been given a full-length vinyl issue. In 1976, Catherine Christer Hennix's just intonation live-electronic ensemble The Deontic Miracle performed Hennix's original compositions, alongside works by La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Terry Jennings, as part of Brouwer's Lattice at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Culled from rehearsal tapes recorded during the ten-day Dream Music Festival, Selected Early Keyboard Works features three pieces of minimal music, performed by Hennix on tunable electric keyboards. "Mode Nouvelle Des Modalités", for well-tuned just intonation Fender Rhodes and sine wave drone, is a consummate expression of Hennix's formative years, a probing meditation giving the mercurial quality of early electronic music an instrumental life replete with the dexterity of Cecil Taylor and shades of Paul Bley's synthesized reveries. "Equal Temperament Fender Mix", performed on the same Rhodes but in twelve-tone equal temperament tuning, employs a tape delay system not unlike that used famously by Terry Riley, here towards more somber, hallucinatory means. Hennix is joined by Hans Isgren for the collection's centerpiece, "The Well-Tuned Marimba", for well-tuned Yamaha, sheng, sine wave, and live electronics. Using the same approach and just intonation keyboard featured on Hennix's The Electric Harpsichord (2010), but with marimba in place of harpsichord stops, the piece is an undulating marvel of lysergic drone, equally deserving of its companion's status as "THE obscure masterpiece of the days of the early American minimalism". Now accessible for the first time, these recordings only begin to fill gaps of silence from a figure whose work has until recently remained flickering at the margins of some of the most enduring cultural developments of the 20th century. Tape transfer and master cut by Andreas (Lupo) Lubich. Audio restoration and mastering by Stephan Mathieu.

BITTER FUNERAL BEER BAND WITH DON CHERRY - Live In Frankfurt 82 (Black Sweat Records 040; Italy) First of all, Bengt Berger -- a pioneer of the Swedish underground of the '70s and historical member of bands such as Archimedes Badkar and Arbete Och Fritid -- is a versatile drummer-percussionist and well-educated ethnomusicologist with several research sojourns in India and Ghana. Deeply influenced by Hindustani, Carnatic, and West Africa music, he founded the Bitter Funeral Beer Band in 1980, an ensemble of 12 elements, basing his ideas on the traditional funeral music of the people of LoBirifor, in the northern region of Ghana. The sound material reinterprets the spirit of the funeral ritual, when the dance and its songs become a moment of catharsis, releasing a sense of joy in the trance for the liberation from pain. The marriage between this Afro-polyrhythmic roots, with the spiritual jazz of the eternal Don Cherry, and the Ondian sarod of K. Sridhar, it is in the direction to a pan-internationalism of profound spirituality, which blends different geographical traditions in a single contemplative gaze. It is the convergence towards a music without boundaries, where every instrumental voice shines and is well fermented and integrated.

038; Italy) If Conversations celebrates the memory, the artistic and spiritual heritage of bassist Fred Hopkins -- a historical member of the revolutionary Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians of Chicago -- who died in January 1999, it also marks the amazing collaboration between the Ritual Trio of Kahil El'Zabar (with Ari Brown and Malachi Favors) and the intrepid veteran Archie Shepp, the great voice of the '70s Afro-free-jazz. Being a tribute that invites to an intimate memory, almost an antidote to exorcise the loss of a brother, the music is a spiritual hymn to life. Between ballads, hard-bop, and free-improvised accents, blow winds of vibrant pianistic chiaroscuros, which are reminiscent of the best McCoy Tyner in the great blinding quartet of John Coltrane in the '60s. Furthermore, when an angular rhythmic base decisively follows the typical hypnotic ostinato of the ancient tribal rituals, the voice is expressed in the purest black spirituals (Big Fred and Brother Malcolm), pervading some moments of that "Holiness" culture dear to the dawn of Afro-American identity. Here, Shepp brings back the flaming shivers of the golden age, when his message of freedom resonated the true spirits of primordial Africa.

LOS ANGELES FREE MUSIC SOCIETY - 35 S. Raymond Avenue (Alga Marghen 159; Italy) One afternoon in 1975, friend and fellow music traveler, Harold Schroeder, showed up at Poo-Bah Record Shop where Tom Recchion worked selling records and experimental music to people, forcing them to buy albums that he swore would change their lives. Harold asked if Tom wanted to share in a studio space close to the shop. After seeing it Tom immediately said "YES!". They moved in and divided the space in half. On Tom's half he made drawings, paintings, performances, video, sculptures, installations, and music. Harold had his all set up for music with his newly acquired Steiner-Parker synth and guitars and things. At the beginning they played under the name The Two Who Do Duets. Soon the late-night jam sessions that took place in the back of Poo-Bah moved over to the fourth floor of 35 South Raymond. It was pretty beat up and derelict, the way one imagines an artist's studio to look. They could make all the noise they wanted. No one else was on their floor. The music heard on this LP has remained unheard since it was recorded and was created just before and right after the inaugural concert by the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) groups Le Forte Four, Doo-Doettes, and Ace & Duce. That concert took place in late January 1976. The sessions on this release feature members of the newly formed and expanded Doo-Doettes, which now included Dennis Duck, Juan Gomez, Harold Schroeder, and Tom Recchion, as well as Ju Suk Reet Meate from Smegma and Ace, of Ace & Duce. 35 S. Raymond eventually became a sort of LAFMS headquarters, with Chip Chapman of Le Forte Four, artist and future Extended Organ vocalist/guitarist Paul McCarthy, and soon to become singer for Nervous Gender, punk/folk artist Phranc, who along with many other artists and musicians, moved into the building. 35 S. Raymond allowed for free expression and explorations of all sorts. Some wild parties ensued, not to mention the luxury of endless hours of experimentation. Parking was free and so was the art and music. Ace found the tapes for side one ("Tom's Studio") in his archive and Ju Suk Reet Meate found the tapes for side two ("50 Of Every American Are Machines") and edited them both for this release. No overdubs or remixing was employed. Luxury gatefold sleeve; Edition of 200.

SMEGMA - Abacus Incognito (Alga Marghen 158; Italy) New primitive-suburban-folk music from Temple City and Pasadena, CA, circa 1973-4. This new edition is culled from the original unissued Smegma tape vaults of Ju Suk Reet Meate and represents the most pure expression of the insular sound-world that was spontaneously discovered as a group. Unlike 2017's Look'n For Ya (TES 154LP) no song forms are ever used, instead fearless group improvisational vocals take you on a strange shape-shifting journey through operatic show tunes, spirit visions and visits to a delirium motel room. The only exception is the title track "Abacus Incognito" that features poetry by Dennis Duck (Human Hands, Dream Syndicate, LAFMS...) with accompaniment by the family stereo console record player/radio unit and utilizing conventional instruments creating a strangely unique non-jamming sound. Except for the first track, all sounds were recorded casually in various band-members parents' houses while they were away... they would have been horrified! The final track is possibly one of the strangest concepts ever recorded, inspired by both the Lord Dunsany story The Three Infernal Jokes and the most popular record of 100 years ago, The O.K. Laughing Record (or OKeh), there is The Smegma: Laughing to Death Record. Edition of 200 (numbered).
LP $25

ARVE HENRIKSEN - Composograph (Rune Grammfon 321; Norway) Recorded at the same Rainbow Studio sessions, and with the same top musicians and legendary engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug, this can only be seen as the rightful twin companion to The Nature Of Connections from 2014. One can easily understand how Arve Henriksen must have found it difficult to select tracks for The Nature Of Connections, leaving these on the shelf. Composograph is standing rock solid as a top notch Henriksen album. There are the typical folk music ties, courtesy of fiddlers Nils Økland and Gjermund Larsen, contemporary chamber jazz, nods to avant free music and atmospheric tone poems. All in all, twelve exquisite originals from one of the world´s leading trumpet players.

ROLAND KAYN - Simultan (Die Schactel 036; Italy) First in the series of LP boxsets documenting the birth of Roland Kayn's cybernetic music. One of the great pioneers of electronic, computer, and instrumental avant-garde music, for the majority of his life, the German composer Roland Kayn remained almost entirely unknown, a founding member of the legendary ensemble, Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, heralded as a singular genius by a small number of figures like Jim O'Rourke. Though the composer was included within Deutsche Grammophon's seminal Avant-Garde series during the early 1970s, it wasn't until 2017, six years after his death, that the ranks of his fans began to noticeably swell, following the release of his monumental work, A Little Electronic Milky Way Of Sound by Frozen Reeds (FR 007-022CD, 2017). Die Schachtel present a reissue here of Simultan, an overwhelmingly important work in his canon, from 1977, stretching across three LPs. While Roland Kayn might be easily described as a composer of electronic, electro-acoustic, or computer music, the majority of his career was in fact largely dedicated to the revolutionary sculpting of an entirely new territory of sound: cybernetic music, a generative process of composition through programming. Simultan was among the first of the composer's works to emerge from this process. Cybernetic music grew from Kayn's longstanding engagement and fascination with data processing theory. This territory of creativity was the composer's attempt to allow sound to be self-sufficient, stripping away notions of harmony, melody, and rhythm, deploying complex networks of electronic devices. Created during the period in which Kayn was living in the Netherlands and recorded with the assistance of electronic music legends Jaap Vink and Leo Küpper, Simultan is filled with a remarkable sense of humanity and touch. The sounds on Simultan range from seductive ambiences, grinding swells of atonally and pure texture, to buried tone clusters. "The mystery, the grace, the boundless invention -- Kayn's machine music is a vast catalogue of very human wonder." - The Guardian Remastered from the original analog master tapes. Includes booklet with new liner notes. Includes printed inner sleeves. Standard edition comes in an edition of 400.
3 LP Box Set $77

WENDY EISENBERG - Time Machine (Feeding Tube 402; USA) "Time Machine is a reissue of a 2017 cassette, and represents the first vinyl issued by Wendy Eisenberg, a peripatetic improviser and composer currently based in Amherst. We first heard of Wendy when she was playing with a blasted quartet called Birthing Hips, whose NNA cassette was an instant classic. Since then she's begun a solo career that branches off in a lot of directions simultaneously. She has an album of post-form noise-metal (in trio with Trevor Dunn and Ches Smith) due soon on John Zorn's Tzadik label. She has an LP of acoustic guitar improvs coming up on Steve Lowenthal's VDSQ imprint. And then there's Time Machine -- a gloriously intimate suite of bedroom pop miniatures that makes us suspect she can do about anything she sets her mind to. The music on Time Machine is arranged sparingly and sung with real warmth. Although everyone thinks I'm nuts for mentioning it, I am reminded in spots of the Space Lady's outsider take on keyboard pop. But there are also large parts of this record that put me in mind of Elisa Ambrogio's solo work as well as the singing she does with 200 Years, meaning there's a sense of inherent wildness being reined in a bit, all for the sake of the songs. Time Machine is a wonderfully flowing album. Small parts of the instrumentation hint at the stranger vistas Ms. Eisenberg's music can explore, reminding us that this is but one of her guises. But it's a damn good one, and we're very happy she let us help document it." --Byron Coley, 2018. Edition of 250.

JERMAN BARNES [JEPH JERMAN / TIM BARNES] - The Finger'd Remove (Feeding Tube 375; USA) "Jerman Barnes sounds like a fancy men's shoe brand, but it's actually a duo comprised of two of the American underground's most prolific wanderers -- Jeph Jerman and Tim Barnes. Jeph has explored everything from primitively brilliant free jazz with Blowhole to deep electronic explorations under the name Hands To, although in the latter part of the 1990s he shifted his focus to music made with found natural objects. Tim Barnes entered our consciousness as fluent master of experimentally canted percussion before he threw us a curve by joining Matt Valentine's Tower Recordings ensemble and going deep-prole for a while. Regardless, he and Jeph started releasing duo recordings almost 15 years ago, and they all brim with a very specific type of spectral weirdness. The instruments listed in the credits are: metal, bamboo temple blocks, springboard, wood, feathers and electrics. Furthermore the sho is played by Ko Ishikawa. So what about the three horn players pictured on the cover? In fact, they are Alex Bruck, Ramón Del Buey, and Misha Marks. This ensemble is briefly heard as distorted source material on the a-side (a penny to the first listener who finds them), but it turns out for this project they're mostly just dancers who use the horns as props, visually key to the process; aurally, not as much. But as you listen to The Finger'd Remove you'll probably start to wonder, 'Hey, where are the instruments not listed? Because surely that's the sound of a dead horse full of bees being dragged down gravel road. Or, wow -- a Texas rain-toilet.' Right? Well, Jeph and Tim aren't saying, but maybe it's just that there are instruments too complicated to notate. Dig? The wild collection of sounds here are designed to live primarily in your imagination. Do you really need to name all that stuff? Our suspicion is you'll be just fine if you lay back, close your eyes, and open your mind to the infinite possibilities suggested here. Words are just too drab to fully capture it all." --Byron Coley, 2018 Edition of 200; Includes download code.
LP $18

ARKM FOAM - Bloodroot Spitball (Feeding Tube 407; USA) "Vinylization of a CD-R released by Josh Burkett's Mystra Records by this great cassette manipulator, who was long a central part of the Boston Whitehaus scene. Bloodroot Spitball is a bit different from Arkm Foam's other Feeding Tube releases, since it incorporates a bunch of 'real' instruments into the mix. This hearkens back to Mr. Foam's first solo LP, The Foam Doesn't Fall Far From The Shore (2013), on Hot Releases. As on that one, there's another player heard here, when Andy Allen (who was all over that first LP) joins a tune to play clarinet. That track, 'Clarimello', may be one of my faves here because the friction between live music and taped/manipulated music is always a treat to hear when it's done well. And this is. The second side is a suite, recorded on the street in Greenfield, while doing something or another. Sounds sort of like he's trying to vacuum dust off of peoples' shoes as they pass by, but that's probably an illusion. Whatever's happening, it's a fine slab of disorganized urban field recording, and makes a very nice contrast to the more evolved work on the a-side, making for another beautiful addition to the Arkm Foam section of every connoisseur's collection." - Byron Coley, 2018. Edition of 200.

ZAMAAM YA SUKKAR - Exotic Love Songs and Instrumentals from the Egyptian 60's (Radio Martiko RMLP 005; Belgium) Zamaan Ya Sukkar is a rich musical portrait from the time when Cairo was the vibrant cultural heart of the Middle East and the grandeur of the leading orchestras was incomparable. Unearthed Latin and jazz-tinged tracks will let your mind drift off to the glamorous nightlife of '60s Cairo. Meet some forgotten souls of the Egyptian music scene and cinema world. Sensual voices and Bollywood-like orchestra sounds inflame the senses of the body with an intangible exotic twist! All music is remastered from original 45s produced by Sono Cairo.
