NEW RELEASES FOR JANUARY 2001

The four new releases from the Tzadik label are due in Friday January 19th and they are:

1.OREN BLOEDOW/JENNIFER CHARLES-La Mar Enfortuna (Tzadik 7146) Luscious and velvety vocals from Jennifer blends perfectly with the exotic jazz, pop, funk and Latin groove of Oren's charming music! Help from Jamie Saft, Ted Reichman, Jane Scarpantoni and Kenny Wollesen. This couple also has a new cd as Elysian Fields. $14.

2.AIKO SHIMADA-Blue Marble (Tzadik 7231) Produced and arranged by the enigmatic and mystical Eyvind Kang, this Japan-born & Seattle-based vocalist & songwriter has an original sound and odd, yet endearing tunes. With Bill Frisell, DJ Olive and many of Seattle's best. $14.

3.ZAKARYA-s/t (Tzadik 7148) Superb modern klez quartet from Paris explore many layers of Jewish history, humor, sensibilities and spirits. Mr. Zorn continues to cast his net around the globe and discover new pearls of Jewish music everywhere! $14.

4.DAVID MAHLER-Hearing Voices (Tzadik 7064) One of the unsung heroes of the early days of minimalism, Mr. Mahler is a master of tape-splicing & sound manipulation. His latest endeavor is another puzzle of bizarre text-based tape pieces. $14.

5.LEE KONITZ-GREG COHEN-JOEY BARON-Some New Stuff (DIW 939) Mr. Zorn put together this extraordinary piano-less trio with the legendary cool-school alto sax great Lee Konitz & the Masada rhythm team. Lee composed all the tunes which pay homage to Lennie Tristano, Attila Zoller & Debussy. Excellent & provocative! $18.

11.LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS-Portrait of a [Lost] Soul (FBWL 201) More tortured soul solo electric guitar mesmerizing and haunted spirits set adrift from our pal Loren. We just got in a few copies of this French import for only $10. (while they last)

12.RON ANDERSON-Anything is Possible (Megaphone 022) Featuring Tatsuya Yoshida (The Ruins), Shelley Hirsch, Daniel Carter, Gino Robair, John Myers and dozens more! Ron is a demanding & powerful el. guitar & bass improviser who has worked in many scenes from NY to the bay area to Europe & Japan! He is a consistently challenging player whose bands include Rat at Rat R, the Molecules & now PAK! $12.

13.WHITE OUT with JIM O'ROURKE-drunken little mass (Ecstatic Peace 96) Longtime downtown improv/noise duo with Lin Culbertson on analogue synth, autoharp and treated vocals, Tom Surgal (Thurston Moore collaborator, director & jazz-head) on drums plus special guest Jim O'Rourke on computer & guitar! 14.CHARLES CURTIS-Ultra Violet Light/Sleep (Squealer 029) Curtis is both a classical cellist and noise guitarist who has worked with a diverse cast - La Monte Young, Donald Miller, Alan Licht & Kramer! Minimalist masterwork or Velvet Underground meets John Cage!?! Our webmaster David Beardsley will give his review in the next newsletter. Two cd set for $17.

15.PETER EPSTEIN & JOAO PAULO-Esquina (MA Recordings 57) Third enchanting trio now duo date with the fine NY saxist Peter Epstein and Portuguese player Joao Paulo! $15.

16.BEN ALLISON/MEDICINE WHEEL-Riding the Nuclear Tiger (Palmetto 2067) Featuring Michael Blake & Ted Nash on saxes, Ron Horton on trumpet, Framk Kimbrough on piano, Tomas Ulrich on cello & Jeff Ballard on drums. Third spunky cd from this local bassist/composer who does a variety of original jazz & funk tunes! $14.

17.JOE McPHEE & HAMID DRAKE-Emancipation Proclamation (Okka 036) Here Joe plays pocket trumpet & tenor sax and Hamid is one of the finest drummer/percussionist we have! Both members of Peter Brotzmann's Chicago Tentet, this is their first duo meeting live at the Empty Bottle in Chicago and it is truly inspired!! $14.

18.ALAN SILVA & OLUYEMI THOMAS-Transmissions (Eremite 27) Powerful and intense duo performance featuring Alan Silva on contrabass (yay!) and Oluyemi on bass clarinet & c-melody sax. Silva was/is one of the giants of free-jazz acoustic bass since the 60's and Oluyemi is a west coast magical mystery man and a great improviser! $14.

19.[KEN VANDERMARK] SCHOOL DAYS-Crossing Division (Okka 037) This one features the ever-prolific Ken on reeds, Jeb Bishop on trombone with Mat Gustaffsson's excellent Norwegian rhythm team of Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten & Paal Nilssen-Love! $14.

20.BILL COLE/COOPER-MOORE/WILLIAM PARKER/WARREN SMITH-Duets and Solos-Volume One (Boxholder 11) Bill Cole is an incredible player of exotic reed instruments and this is his second superb endeavor for the ever-intriguing Boxholder label! $14.

21.IVO PERELMAN-WILBER MORRIS-MICHAEL WIMBERLY-The Eye Listens (Boxholder 12) Ivo is an outstanding tenor saxist from Brasil who now lives in NYC. He was recently ill and off the scene for a while, but is back to blow us all away once more! This is an extraordinary avant-jazz trio date and the trio will be at Tonic soon! $14.

22.MARCO ENEIDI-WILLIAM PARKER-DONALD ROBINSON-cherry box (Eremite 025) Marco is a fabulous and often intense alto saxist who has played in some of William Parker's ensembles, before moving to the bay area. He has co-led bands with the late, great Glenn Spearman which have included the fine drummer Donald Robinson from What We Live. This is a mind-blowing live date from Mills College in 1998! $14.

22.KEITH YAUN 4TET-Amen Improvisations on Messiaen (Boxholder 10) Featuring Bern Nix & Keith on electric guitars, Mat Maneri on violin & John McClellan on drums. Immensely cerebral, swirling and mystifying avant-jazz from two great guitarists, the ever-challenging violin of Mat Maneri and an intense Boston based drummer! $14.

23.NATIONAL HEALTH-Playtime (Cuneiform 145) Hooray! National Health were one of the last of the wonderful 'Canterbury-style' progressive/jazz-rock bands! This version from late '78 included fusion guitar hero Phil Miller (Matching Mole, Hatfield), Alan Gowan (Gilgamesh), John Greaves (Henry Cow) and Pip Pyle (Gong, Hatfield)! This is the first live documentation of this beloved band and it is fantastic!!! $13.

24.ELTON DEAN-Moorsong (Cuneiform 143) Amazingly diverse blend of jazz styles from our favorite former Soft Machine/Keith Tippett sax hero with Mark Hewins, Alex Maguire, Fred Baker, Mark Sanders & Liam Genockey! From atmospheric to organ-groove coolness and freer regions! $13.

25.HUGH HOPPER-parabolic versions (Voiceprint 209) Moody and mesmerizing vocal tunes written by Softs fuzz-bass legend Hugh Hopper and featuring the voices of Robert Wyatt, Richard Sinclair, Lisa Klossner & John Atkinson! A strong offering, but only four of the twelve tunes are unreleased & only one tune each from Wyatt & Sinclair. $14.

26.ROBERT CREELEY/DAVID TORN/STEVE SWALLOW-Have We Told You All You'd Thought to Know? (Cuneiform 144) Robert Creeley is one America's greatest living poets and here he reads his fascinating poems backed by this fine ensemble which also includes two of (guitar legend & manipulator) David Torn's collaborators - David Cast on reeds & Chris Massey on drums plus Steve Swallow's superb el. bass! $13.

27.HAMSTER THEATRE-Carnival Detournement (Cuneiform 146) This strange combo is led by Dave Willey and includes Mike Johnson, both of whom also work in Thinking Plague. Their music is weird, challenging and often in between the cracks of category, but does include some progressive, dub, modern classical, folk music from around the globe and even carnival/theatre sounds. I look forward to unravel their mystery! $13.

28.THE MUFFINS-Open City (Cuneiform 55010) The Muffins were/are a legendary progressive quartet from the DC area who were influenced be the Canterbury sound! This cd has been out-of-print for a while and includes unreleased live material, out-takes from their first and perhaps best release 'Manna/Mirage', as well as from Fred Frith's 'Gravity' sessions! $13.

29.THE STICKMEN-Insatiable (Cuneiform 151) Holy shit! Legendary frenzied-psycho-punk-funk no wave unit from Philly in the early 80's who were charming, brutal and hilarious! This cd includes all of their recorded material, live rarities and a cd-rom track! $13.

30.DEREK BAILEY-GAVIN BRYARS-TONY OXLEY-Joseph Holbrooke '98 (Incus 39) This is their historic first reunion performance since the early days of British free-improv in 1966 and it is of course an outstanding trio of guitar, acoustic bass & drums! $17.

31.CLUSONE 3-An Hour With (Hatology 554) Featuring the incredible Michael Moore, Ernst Reijseger and Han Bennink! Final blow-out from this extraordinary ICP all-star trio who never cease to amaze their audience from the sublime to the ridiculous, mainstream to free-jazz and anything/everything in between! Recorded March '98. $16.

32.DEREK BAILEY-HAINO KEIJI-Songs (Incus 40) Guitar and extreme/vocal improv from two masters of international, cross-cultural, free-form weirdness! $17.

33.HAN BENNINK & STEVE BERESFORD-In Ed a Mo (ICP 37) Even more wacky improv antics from this wonderful & silly drums and piano duet of crazies! $18.

34.KLEZMOKUM-Le Dor Va Dor (Bvhaast 0700) Fourth fabulous release from this enchanting Amsterdam-based octet led by 60's free-jazz pioneer and pianist Burton Greene and including clarinet hero Perry Robinson with two fine female vocalists. They update rare klezmer gems from around the world and from different eras! Now $15.

35.DIANE PETERS-Archaepteryx (New Market 3069) Australian harpist Diane Peters came to visit us here at DMG a few months ago and left us with two excellent cds of her own music as well as a klezmer band she is in. She is an excellent harpist and an engaging composer and just sent us her new quintet cd which features sax, trombone (from Bucketrider?), bass, drums and her fine harp & occasional vocals. Impressive! $10.

36.OREN AMBARCHI & MARTIN NG-Reconnaissance (Staubgold 15) You should recall Australian guitar wiz and sound manipulator Oren Ambarchi from his post-punk-improv unit Phlegm who played here at DMG a few years back and who have a duo cd out on Tzadik's radical Jewish culture series. More recently Oren has been spending time with the MIMEO sound-explorers in Europe. This fine duo from down under specialize in successful and subtle architectural sound experiments! $14.

37.MARIA KALANIEMI & ALDARGAZ-Ahma (Northside 6053) Maria is a splendid Finnish accordionist and also a member of the international ensemble Accordion Tribe with Lars Hollmer & Guy Klucevsek. This is her third haunting and passionate release with her ensemble - Aldargaz who include members of Finnish folk unit JPP! $14.

38.RAJESH MEHTA-Reconfigurations (between the lines 010) Former Braxton student, distinguished player of various hybrid trumpets and engaging composer - Rajesh now lives in Berlin and leads the Mehta-Metric Ensemble. Utterly fascinating works which refine the connection between mathematics and music/myth making. $15.

39.ANDREAS WILLERS-Tin Drum Stories (between the lines 009) Andreas is a great but unrecognized guitarist who has worked with Louis Sclavis on one release, Mark Dresser & Bobby Previte on another and even has a Jimi Hendrix tribute in more recent years. This fine cd features his current German-based trio with acoustic bass & drums and was inspired by the Gunter Grass novel of its title. Highly diverse & stimulating! $15.

40.TONY ALLEN-Black Voices (Comet 005) Tony Allen was Fela's main powerful funk drummer for most of the 70's releases. Tony now leads a French-based unit who have moved their funk into the future with long, spaced-out, dub-like samples and jams. Guests include P-Funk member Gary 'Mudbone' Cooper. Price now reduced to $14.

41.PAULINE OLIVEROS/CARRIER BAND-Automatic Inscription of Speech Melody (Deep Listening) Cosmic trio improvisation with Andrew Deutsch, Peer Bode and Ms. Oliveros which weaves words through a vocoder mixed with loops and tapes. $13.

42.JONATHAN HARVEY-Bhakti (Montaigne 78217) This is Mr. Harvey's second comission for IRCAM, performed by the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne considered his electro-acoustic masterwork. Inspired by the hymns of the Rig Veda and absolutely transcendent! $14.

43.CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE-Alloy/Holy 1 & Holy 2 (alga marghen 035) Historic recordings from the late 60's with Charlemagne on alumonium, Tony Conrad on the long string drone, saxist Bob Feldman on conch shell and the vocals of soprano Deborah Glaser. More mesmerizing drones! $16.

44.CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE-Continous Sound Forms (alga marghen 036) Includes the amazing "Duo Strumming for Two Harpsichords" (1978) and "Piano Drone" (1972). Dreamy and liquid sounds. $16.

45.IANCU DUMITRESCU/ANA-MARIA AVRAM-Soleil Explosant (Edition Modern 1016) Six new works from these brilliant and ever-challenging composers for computers, three groups of percussion and The Hyperion Ensemble with tape! $14.

46.LUIGI NONO-Voices of Protest (Mode 87) Featuring three startling vocal works for sopranos, reciters, clarinet, thunder sheets, 8 channel tapes, more voices from the 60's and 80's. Politically inspired texts, experimental vocals from a world tore apart by oppression, the song of an Algerian woman survives as the possibility of freedom! $14.

47.JOHN CAGE-Empty Words [Part III] (Ampersand 06) Cage recites the words of Thoreau which are completely transformed beyond linguistic meaning in Milano Italy in 1977 before a crowd of restless students who eventually erupt into an arts riot! A two cd set for $17.

48.ANDREW POPPY-Time at Rest Devouring Its Secret (Source Research 1) Under-recognized British minimalist composer who has been inspired by Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Morton Feldman - creates an electronic work which freezes time and subtly seduces the listener as well. $13.

49.KAIJA SAARIAHO-New Gates (Mode 91) Leading and well respected Finnish contemporary classical composer new release features four outstanding works for alto flute, cello, harp, piano, clarinet, viola, trumpet, percussion, sampler and synth. Truly enchanting music performed by the Champ D'Action Belgian New Music Ensemble. $14.

50.DAVID ROSENBOOM-Invisible Gold (Pogus 21022) A pioneer of American experimental music since the 60's, Mr. Rosenboom here features two works of live electronic music involving extended musical interface with the human nervous system! $10.

51.GABRIEL VALVERDE-Luminar (Mode 94) Leading new music composer from Argentina premieres kaleidoscopic works for shifting sound masses, solo piano, solo harp, string trio with computer and an ensemble with a chamber choir. $14.

52.PIANO MUSIC OF THE DARMSTADT SCHOOL-various composers (DG 6131004) Steffen Schleiermacher performs difficult piano music of Stockhausen, Messiaen, Boulez, Aldo Clementi & Evanelisti. $14.

53.GUY KLUCEVSEK POLKA BAND-polka dots & laser beams (EVA) A odd mix of polkas composed by Tom Cora, Anthony Coleman, Robin Holcomb, Duke Ellington, Peter Garland, Bobby Previte, Nic Collins & more. Musicians include John King, Dave Hofstra, Bill Ruyle, Mark Feldman, Erik Friedlander and Doug Weiselman! An immensely charming collection, long out-of-print and almost impossible to find. We just received a few, but friends of ours in France claim they can get more. We'll see. $25.

54.GUY KLUCEVSEK POLKA BAND-Who Stole the Polka? (EVA) This is volume two of the above polka series with most of the same personnel. The composers on this one include David Garland, Fred Frith, Phillip Johnston, Elliott Sharp, John King, Peter Zummo, Carl Stone, Mary Jane Leach, David Mahler & A. Leroy! Limited for now. $25.

55.THE POP GROUP-We Are All Prostitutes (Radar) Wow! The Pop Group were one of the great unsung heroes of the British punk/funk/no wave/politico extremist scene!! They recorded two absolutely brilliant/scary lps on Rough Trade in '79 & '80 which still sell for $$$ today. Members ended up in such great bands like Rip, Rig & Panic and Mark Stewart & the Mafia and Dennis 'Blackbeard' Bovell produced their first one!! Limited quantities. $20.

56.FAUST-Faust/So Far (Collector's Choice 179) Exactly 30 years ago the first Faust record came out and no one who heard it then will ever be the same! Certainly one of the strangest of all krautrock bands and unlike any of the other weird psych/prog German synth bands. Their music was a twisted mix of rock, folk, psych, modern classical and tape manipulation. This reissue contains their first two lps in their entirety, which have long been out-of-print, except for the recently released 'Wumme Years' box set. $14.

57.THE INSECT TRUST-s/t (Ascension 031) Classic gem of a southern band transplanted to NY in 1968 - delightful-mix of ESP-like free/jazz meets San Francisco psych/blues with British folk/rock! Their personnel included the quaint and haunting voice of Nancy Jeffreys and the reeds of Robert Palmer, who later went on to be an excellent jazz/blues/rock journalist for the NY Times! $15.

58.DAVID AXELROD-Songs of Innocence (Ascension 012) Much revered and sampled sixties producer/arranger/composer for Cannonball Adderley, the Electric Prunes and many more psych bands. This is his first solo effort from 1968 and it is an amazing suite of swirling instrumental orchestral psychedelia dedicated to the great poet William Blake! Of course the cover is a kaleidoscope of colors as well! Cd & lp both for $15.

59.DAVID AXELROD-Songs of Experience (Ascension 013) This is Mr. Axelrod's second tribute to poet William Blake with more swirling, instrumental, orchestral, psychedelic grooviness with Blake's poems presented in the booklet. US reissue lp for $10. and Australian reissue cd for $15.

60.GRUPPO DI IMPROVVISAZIONE NUOVA CONSONANZA-Musica Su Schemi (Ampersand 04) The world's first composer's collective founded in Italy in 1964 and including Ennio Morricone, Franco Evangelisti and Giancarlo Schiaffini (Italian Instabile Orchestra). AMM-like serious sonic exploration and the blurring between modern classical, free improv and electronic manipulation. Outstanding and demanding! $14.

61.ENNIO MORRICONE-Morricone 2001 (Dagored 125) Excellent collection 15 tracks from late 60's/early 70's with liner notes by Alan Bishop of the Sun City Girls. Erotic pop, lush and hypnotic, groovy lounge sounds, infectious and mysterious! $14.

62.GILA-Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (Garden of Delights 046) Wonderful and delightful German folk/psych splendor from 1973 featuring Conny Veit who soon left to join Popol Vuh. The endearing English vocals by female singer Sabine Merbach, as well as the concept lyrics of dealing with the oppression of the American Indians make this gem seem more like a long-lost American classic. Touching and tasty! $16.

63.BRAINSTORM-Second Smile (Garden of Delights 047) Second great progressive lp from 1973 from this most inventive German jazz/rock band who are influenced by Zappa, Soft Machine, Caravan, Hatfield & the North and similar to Supersister! Essential! $16.

64. SEAN BERGIN & M.O.B.-Kids Mysteries (Nimbus) Featuring Han Bennink, Michael Moore, Ernst Reijseger, Tristan Honsinger & more ICPers! Fabulous mix of Euro out & in jazz coolness and even some South African style gospel/funk!! $10.

65.CURTIS CLARK-Live at Bimhuis (Nimbus) Featuring Louis Moholo, Andy Sheppard, Ernst Reijseger...excellent out & inside jazz gem!! $10.

70.GRAM PARSONS-Another Side of this Life (Sundazed 11092) Fine early solo demo recording by the true pioneer of country-rock, Byrds member and Flying Burrito Brothers founder. Gram only recorded two swell solo albums before his tragic death! $14.

DELAYS & DELETIONS, DELAYS & DELETIONS, DELAYS & DELETIONS:

The four AMON DUUL II titles/reissues listed here in December will not be forthcoming due to problems between the two labels who claim to own these releases.

The TERRY RILEY 'You're Nogood' 2cd reissue on Cortical Foundation is delayed.

The four new CIMP releases also listed in December including the new Braxton Qt. are also delayed until the Canadian manufacturer gets their shit together.

And yes, we are still waiting on the Shin Terai cd from ION with the Laswell crew to come in sometime in the next century, hopefully soon!?!?! But who knows?
