Expensive Japanese import cd for $19. 28.GUNTER MULLER/LE QUAN NINH-La Voyelle Liquide (Erstwhile 010) Two brilliant but very different improvising percussionists who have been working with electronics in recent years combine their inventive palettes in a variety of sonic stew situations. $13. 29.THOMAS LEHN/MARKUS SCHMICKLER-Bart (Erstwhile 012) Thomas plays analoguesynth in Konk Pack (Tim Hodgkinson & Roger Turner) and with Gerry Hemingway. Markus plays digital synth and computer, records as Wabi Sabi and Pluramon and is also a member of MIMEO. This is perhaps the most challenging of all Erstwhile cds so far! $13. 30.OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/VOICE CRACK-Bits, Bots and Signs (Erstwhile 013) Turntablist, home-made guitarist & sampler wiz - Otomo was once the leader of Ground Zero and more recently I.S.O. - has moved away from the dense and harsh world of maximal electronics/sampling and into more minimal textures. Now a budget priced import for $14. 34.MORTON FELDMAN-Routine Investigations (Montaigne 782 129) Five fascinating Feldman pieces from his rarely documented middle period. "Uniquely precious!" $14. 35.GIANCINTO SCELSI-The Piano Works 1 (Mode 92) Superb Canadian pianist Louise Bessette performs Scelsi's demanding "Second Sonata" (suggesting the sounds of Oriental gongs), "Fourth Sonata" (a beautiful and dark elegy) and "Ttai" (the sacred sound of Om). $14. 36.IANNIS XENAKIS-Chamber Music 1955-1990 (Montaigne 782 137) Graphic score works similar to the architecture of (Xenakis collaborator) Le Corbusiern and Varese-like sound masses referred to as "galaxies or clouds". Performed by the Arditti String Quartet and pianist Claude Helffer. Two cd set for $26. 37.LUIGI NONO-Variazioni Canoniche (Montaigne 782 132) Extraordinarily ultra-subtle music which uses silence as a form of suspended meditation, punctuated by incandescent sound events - like a nightmare slowed down. $14. 38.LUIGI NONO-La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura (Montaigne 782 133) An intimate voyage for solo violin performed by Irvine Arditti and eight-track tape, seizing snippets of a madrigal which is frayed beyond recognition. $14. 39.PETER EOTVOS-Chinese Opera, Shadows & Steine (Kairos 1208) Amazing Transylvanian composer who has worked with Stockhausen and whose own music is also highly idiosyncratic, extremely imaginative and often evokes visual spirits. $15. 40.HUGH LE CAINE-Compositions/Demonstrations 1946-1974 (JWD 03) A most comprehensive compilation of bizarre sounds from this early electronics pioneer and instrument maker from Canada. Hugh invented the Sackbut Synthesizer, the Touch Sensitive Organ and the Mouth Cavity Oscillator! Occasionally hilarious! $13. 41.TREVOR WISHART-Red Bird (EMF 022) A vast array of recorded sound shifts, which slowly morph into other weird electronic sounds - magical and essential! $13. 42.ERNEST DAWKINS' NEW HORIZONS ENSEMBLE-Jo'Burg Jump (Delmark 524) Ernest is the current chairman of the AACM and although his wonderful modern jazz unit has been around for more than two decades, this is their first domestic release. They backed Slapp Happy and were befriended by Henry Cow. This amazing 5 cd box-set contains their first four releases - Faust, So Far, The Faust Tapes & 71 Minutes plus another 2cds worth of BBC Sessions, Top Gear and assorted rarities, plus an impressive booklet covering their early history. A descent into the maelstrom of experimental rock for $65.! 44.FLUXUS ANTHOLOGY-various artists (Anthology 18) Rare collection of music and sound events from this bizarre sixties (anti?) art movement featuring LaMonte Young, John Cage, Yoko Ono, Walter Marchetti, Alison Knowles, Nam June Paik, Philip Corner and many more. Considered by many to be their finest studio album and only released on a very limited edition cd, it is back with two extra tracks in all its incredible progressive glory! This is a legit version. $17. 47.GENTLE GIANT-Rome '74 (Voice Print offshoot) Official 'Octopus' era live recording with good but not great sound and the first of a series of live releases from one England's finest progressive legendary ensembles! $17. 48.EVAN PARKER-ALVIN CURRAN-ANDREA CENTAZZO-Realtime 1 (Felmay 5029) Live in Italy in December of 1977, this trio of saxes-electronics-percussion each from a different country and discipline combine talents for cosmic improv. $17. 49.ENNIO MORRICONE-Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura (Dagored 119) This was the only known soundtrack performed by Morricone's incredible free improv unit and it is an amazing blend of 70's Miles fuzz-wah guitar, psychedelic jabs, bowed cymbals, scraping metal and occasionally serious grooves. Wonderful sound and seven unreleased tracks make this an essential release! Available on high quality vinyl and cd for $14. 50.MARIO PAVONE-Sharpville (Playscape 90885) Featuring Thomas Chapin, Marty Ehrlich and Pheeroan AkLaff. Mussilami is a fine but under-recognized jazz guitarist who recorded a few great albums for Mario Pavone's Alacra label and a swell cd for Evidence. Here are three fine cds from the archives which feature the stunning sax and flute work of our old friend Thomas Chapin. Bruce Hampton and the outstanding double guitar frenzy of Glenn Philips and Harold Kelling!! I witnessed them open for the Mothers at the Fillmore in 1970 and I will never be the same! Second worst selling record on Columbia and out-of-print forever probably. The side-long version of Julius' "Hard Blues" is astounding! $10. 58.CECIL TAYLOR-Trance (Black Lion) Long single version of 'Nefertiti, The Beautiful One has Come' - featuring Jimmy Lyons, Sunny Murray and Cecil Taylor live at the Café Monmartre in Copenhagen in 1962 - the beginning of avant/free jazz! $10. 59.FRANK LOWE-Fresh (Black Lion) Great early effort featuring Lester and Joseph Bowie on trumpet & trombone, Abdul Wadud on cello, Steve Reid and Charles Bobo Shaw on drums.
