4.JOHN ZORN-Cartoon S/M (Tzadik 7330) Outstanding performances of Mr. Zorn's chamber works played by the Mondriaan Quartet and the Asko Ensemble. The 'light' cd covers his quirky cartoon cutup compositions and the 'dark' cd covers his S&M "Torture Garden" period. Both cds conclude with superb versions of "Kol Nidre", perhaps Zorn's most sad and beautiful piece. Possibly delayed until November. Two cd set for $20.

20.MARKWHITECAGE TRIO-Live on Tour in Tours, Vol. 2 (Acoustics 412) This one is live in France in October of 1999 and it is Mark's main trio with Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen. Another strking free trio date excursion! $13.

21.JOHN LINDBERG ENSEMBLE-The Cat Birds Sings (Soul Note 120198) Featuring Leo Smith, Larry Ochs (from Rova) and Andrew Cyrille! Wonder contrabassist and composer returns with not one, but two extraordinary modern jazz treasures! $14.

23.THURSTON MOORE-WALLY SHOUP-TOSHI MAKIHARA-Hurricane Floyd (Sublingual 007) Wow! A perfect title for this raging storm trio of throttling improv fireworks! Wally is a lesser known alto sax great who used to work with Davey Williams & LaDonna Smith. Toshi is a percussion hero who has worked with Zorn, Chadbourne and Peter Brotzmann. The hurricane hit Cambridge and this trio whipped up their own fierce force/energy! $14.

24.DAVID SHEA & NUESTRA SIGNORA ENSEMBLE-El Ritual de North et Sud (More Music 009) Shea spent a year working with acoustic musicians from northern Italy and produced two releases. Here he conducts and samples a ten piece ensemble with exotic instrumentation of oud, hurdy-gurdy, darbouka, accordion, mandolin and voice. Exquisite results. $15.

25.[DAVID SOLDIER'S] THE KROPOTKINS-Five Points Crawl (Mulatta 003) With Lorette Velvette on sexy vocals, Dave Soldier & Charles Burnham on violins, Dog (from Chunk) on guitar and Moe Tucker & Jonathan Kane on drums. Another swell, steamy pop concoction from Dave Soldier's rock band. A hit on WFMU! $14.

26.ROB REDDY'S QUTTAH-However Humble (Koch 8579) Featuring Jef Lee Johnson, Charles Burham, Rufus Cappadocia, Dom Richards, Hearn Gadbois and Rob on saxes and compositions. This is Rob Reddy's new project with amazing strings, exotic percussion and the steaming guitar of Jef Lee Johnson! $14.

27.DENMAN MARONEY/HANS TAMMEN-Billabong (Potlatch 100) Denman plays prepared or hyperpiano and has worked with Mark Dresser. Hans also plays prepared electric guitar on his lap and has played here at DMG a number of times. Together this studio recording captures them extending the language of their instruments to strange extremes! Fascinating and unnerving! $14.

28.MARK HELIAS-DANIELE D'AGARO-U.T. GANDHI-Gentle Ben (nota 2.96) Fine trio of tenor sax/clarinet, double bass and drums with two unrecognized but great Italian musicians and one of our finest bassist & composers. Mostly originals, but they also cover Thelonius Monk, Sean Bergin and a traditional Portuguese tune. $14.

29.MICKEY NEWBURY TRIBUTE-Frisco Mabel Joy Revisited (Appleseed 1048) Featuring Robin Holcomb, Bill Frisell, Dave Alvin, Chuck Prophet, the Walkabouts and Kris Kristofferson! Newbury was/is a wonderful Texas songwriter/singer whose early hit was the psychedelic nugget "Just Dropped In" by the First Edition. This is a superb and heart-felt tribute which includes his classic tune "American Trilogy". $14.

31.EVAN PARKER/KEITH ROWE-Dark Rags (Potlatch 200) Two masters of the British free/avant/jazz scene meet for the first time! Evan's extensive extended tenor and soprano sax explorations erupt with Keith of AMM's godfather of guitar-on-table el. guitar manipulations! A match made in heaven! $14.

32.KEITH TIPPETT & STRING QUARTET-Linukea (FMR 70) An incredible project for master pianist and composer - Keith Tippett - who composed this outstanding work for piano and string quartet! Brilliant once again! Bravo! $17.

33.PAUL DUNMALL-SIMON PICARD-TONY BIANCO-Utoma Trio (Emanem 4040) Paul is one of England's finest sax & bagpipe heroes who has long played with Keith Tippett's Mujician. This is a powerful trio for two tenors and percussion! $17.

34.JON ROSE-The Hyperstring Project/New Dynamic of Rogue Counterpoint (ReR JR6) Brilliant and bizarre violin MIDI weirdness which draws on the infinite samples from a deep sonic well! Jon is in the midst of curating two weeks of string players at Tonic this month and will have a cd release performance at Roulette on October 21st! $14.

35.JON ROSE & THE EXILES-One (Megaphone) The Exiles are Jon Rose on various violins & samples, Joe Williamson on basses and Tony (from Peril) Buck on drums (both from Kletka Red). Intense improv insanity with a throttling post-punk rhythm team! $14.

36.ALEX BLAKE/PHAROAH SANDERS QUINTET-Now is the Time (Bubblecore 030) Featuring John Hicks on piano, Victor Jones on drums, Neil Clark on percussion and Pharoah screaming like a man posessed on tenor sax! Alex is a fantastic double bassist who strums, plucks and continually does amazing things to his bass! Superb! $14.

37.PAUL SCHUTZE-third site (Ryko UK 10464) With Raoul Bjorkenheim & Simon Hopkins on guitars, Clive Bell on flutes, Thomas Koner on voice and Paul Schutze on percussion, electronics and sound construction. Import only release of Paul's ultra-subtle sonic landscapes, somber and eerie, gentle and brooding, drones and ghosts. $17.

38.ARTURO STALTERI/THE MUSIC OF BRIAN ENO-coolAugustMoon (Materiali Sonori 90120) Italian chamber ensemble performs the music of Brian Eno including "St. Elmo's Fire", "Julie With... and "Zawinul/Lava". Enchanting! $14.

39.BUDOWITZ-Wedding Without a Bride (Buda 92759) Delightful traditional music of the Jewish wedding ceremony, played as close to the original as possible from one of the finest klezmer oufits! $14.

40.JONATHAN BEPLER-Cremaster II (self produced) Impressive and scary soundtrack music featuring Zorn's dummer of choice - Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Zorn-Frith-Laswell and Xu Feng), heavy church organ and the buzzing of bees to crawl under our skins! $17.

41.PHILLIP GREENLIEF & COVERED PAGES-russian notebooks (Evander 007) Featuring Nels Cline & G.E. Stinson on guitars and Vinny Golia & Phillip Greenlief on numerous saxes, clarinets, flutes & trumpet. Although I am unfamiliar with the leader of this date, the other three musicians are favorites of mine from the LA scene. This music is the soundtrack for dreams Phillip had about his trip to Russia - spacious sounds which fall between modern jazz and classical areas. Shadows swirl, autumn colors abound. $14.

42.SHANKAR & ZAKIR HUSSAIN-Eternal Light (Moment 1020) Transcendent trio for double violin, tabla and ghatam [T.H. Vinayakram]. Shankar and Zakir have been playing together for a quarter century, through their days with Indian/jazz/fusion pioneers Shakti and now into the future of post-raga explosions! $14.

43.MIROSLAV TADIC-Window Mirror (MA Recordings 16) Solo acoustic guitar debut by this Yugoslavian master who plays eastern European folk songs, Bach's "Suite in A Minor"and two originals. Exquisite playing and a wonderful warm live recording! $15.

44.CHARLIE KOHLHASE-MATT LANGLEY-you start (Boxholder 007) Both of these great sax players are from the Boston area, Charlie I recall from the Either/Orchestra as well as other great beantown bands. Charlie plays alto, baritone & tenor and Matt plays tenor and soprano. Astonishingly great sax duo that is diverse, challenging and well thought out! $14.

45.FRANK GRATOWSKI-GEORG GRAEWE-PAUL LOVENS-Quicksand (Meniscus 007) Frank plays alto sax & clarinets - a European player who lives in the midwest. Georg is a phenomenal European pianist who also spent time in recent years in Chicago and the distinctive Austrian (FMP) drum hero Lovens has played with Cecil Taylor and recently toured the south with Eugene Chadbourne. This is a colossal trio recording live in Germany from last year and it is quite spectacular! $13.

46.SUN CITY GIRLS-Carnival Folklore Resurrection Vol. 4: A Bullet Through the Last Temple (Abduction 015) This is their alleged avant-jazz excursion and it does feature a guest trumpeter and upright bassist. They poke fun at Downbeat, play spaced out Sun Ra-like piano, loft-jazz ramblings and other assorted weirdness. $14.

47.SUN CITY GIRLS-CFR Volume 5: Severed Finger with a Wedding Ring (Abduction 016) Fifth in the never-ending CFR series of 1,000 limited edition cds. This includes an odd proto-lounge tune, a long organ instrumental blast from Ra-land, the (un)usual guitar-bass-drums insanity that they are known for. An hallucinogenic gem. $14.

48.JOHN CAGE & KENNETH PATCHEN-The City Wears a Slouch Hat (Cortical 14) Rare recording and original radio broadcast from 1942, plus "Credo in Us" and "Imaginary Landscape" from 1939. Limited edition of 1,000 and almost gone! $15.

49.CORNELIUS CARDEW-Then Great Learning (Cortical 21) Reissue of the long out-of-print DG album conducted by Cornelius Cardew - founding member of AMM plus another version performed by the legendary Scratch Orchestra in Queen Elizabeth Hall in May of '82. 15.

50.CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE-Schlongo!!! da LUV drone [solo pipe organ] (Cortical 23) "A continuous herd of organ pipes in a large resonant cathedral escalating to thousands of overtones... This is the third Palestine release in the past month! $15.

51.JONATHAN HARVEY-Tombeau De Messiaen (Saragasso 28029) Stunning and startling electronic music composed with real-time orchestral forces and realized at IRCAM by this astounding British composer with too few releases! $14.

52.GUILLERMO GREGORIO-Otra Musica (Atavistic 209) Tape music, fluxus flotsam and free improv from '63-'70 in Buenos Aires from this wonderful Argentinean clarinet and alto sax player who went on to record various cds for Hat Art & Hatology! An important archival gem unearthed! $13.

53.JOHN CAGE/DAVID TUDOR-Rainforest II (New World 80540) This was recorded live in May of 1972 by Radio Bremen and it consists of Cage's piece "Mureau" in which he selects and reads excerpts from Thoreau's journals with three other pre-recorded tracks of his own voice while Tudor processes the vocal material adding more ghosts to the cosmic brew. Fascinating and essential for new music lovers! Two cd set for $27.

54.MORTON FELDMAN/STEFAN WOLPE-Choral Music of Feldman and Wolpe (New World 80550) Wolpe's "Two Chinese Epitaphs" was composed in Jerusalem in 1937 and out of the anger inspired by the fascists bombing of Guernica. His "Four Pieces for Mixed Chorus" was written to express hope for the new nation of Israel. Feldman studied with and was influenced by Wolpe and his "For Stefan Wolpe for Chorus & Two Vibraphones" is quiet, atonal and austere. Indispensable! $14.

55.JOHN CAGE-Two 4th for Violin with Piano or Sho (Mode 88) Performed by Stephen Drury, Irvine Arditti and Mayumi Miyata. "Two 4th " is special because it uses the same score for both the piano and the sho (Japanese mouth organ) parts and this is the first time both versions appear on one disc. These include extended lullabies modified from Erik Satie's "Vexations". The result is mystical music that is mysteriously magical. $14.

56.LOU HARRISON-Rhymes With Silver (New Albion 110) Performed by the amazing cellist Joan Jeanrenaud in her post Kronos debut with the Abel-Steinberg-Winant Trio. Bach is transported to the Royal Court of Java to perform for quite a different audience - the results are what Lou Harrison had in mind for this piece. $14.

58.HOWARD RILEY-BARRY GUY-TONY OXLEY-Synopsis (Emanem 4044) Graphic scores interpreted by this legendary British all-star trio with Howard on piano, Barry on amplified basses and Tony on drums & electronics. This is a reissue of the long sought-after Incus lp with much extra material included! $17.

59.IRENE SCHWEIZER-JOHN TCHICAI QUARTET-Willi the Pig (Atavistic 210) Another wonderful treasure from Atavistic's extraordinary 'Unheard Music' series! Irene is one of the finest pianist to emerge from anywhere (Switzerland) and John Tchicai is a demanding sax hero who (still) plays with the NT Art Qt. and now moves back & forth from Europe to the US. $14.

60.STEVE LACY-Hooky (Emanem 4042) An entire Montreal solo concert from 1976 including the rare title piece which was never on found cd until now and 50 minutes of previously unreleased solo soprano sax from the same concert! $17.

61.EUGENE CHADBOURNE & FRANK LOWE-Don't Punk Out (Emanem 4043) Essential reissue of an incredibly rare lp from 1979 where two gods of free/jazz from much different worlds first collided! Frank was still playing intensely back then and Eugene was playing/torturing that guitar like no-one else! This cd also includes much newly unreleased material from Dr. Chad as well. $17.
