1.JOHN ZORN-The Big Gundown/15th Anniversary Edition (Tzadik 7328) Incredible! This is Zorn's extraordinary tribute to maverick Italian film composer Ennio Morricone from 1985. Now lushly remastered with impressive 32 page booklet and six newly recorded bonus tracks featuring Chamber Masada, Derek Bailey, Jamie Saft, Cyro Baptista, Miho Hitori, Mike Patton & Trevor Dunn. A 75 minute masterwork!! $14. 2.NED ROTHENBERG-Ghost Stories (Tzadik 7061) Featuring Erik Friedlander on cello, Min Xiao-Fen on pipa, Satoshi Takeishi on exotic percussion and Ned on alto sax, clarinet & shakuchachi. A superb effort from downtown sax hero blending composed, improvised, Eastern and Western threads into stunning modern chamber music! $14.

3.ELLIOTT SHARP-EINAD ABU-KAF-MOHAMMED SYNC-Autar (ZuTa 1008) Mesmerizing trio with Elliott on acoustic guitar and two Bedouin musicians from the Negev desert in Israel who play lyre-like stringed instruments called sumsumiyas! $14.

4.URI CAINE ENSEMBLE-The Goldberg Variations (W&W 54) Much anticipated two cd extravaganza with Uri's extended ensemble featuring Don Byron, Greg Osby, Josh Roseman, Bob Stewart, Ralph Alessi, Drew Gress, David Moss'ĶTwo cd set for $28.

5.JOEY BARON/DOWN HOME-we'll soon find out (Intuition 3515) Featuring Bill Frisell, Arthur Blythe and Ron Carter. Second effort & much better than the first! $14.

6.JOEY BARON-Killer Joey (Goo-Head) Featuring Steve Cardenas and Adam Levy on guitars, Tony Scherr on bass & Joey on drums/compositions. Self-released & only sold at their gigs, Masada's drum hero creates a variety of funky jazz grooves to dig on! $14.

7.STEVE CARDENAS-shebang (fresh sound 079) With Larry Grenadier on bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums. Former west coast jazz guitar great who both sly & subtle and plays for Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band, Joey Baron's Killer Joey and was just seen on 'Sessions at 54' for Mark Isham's Miles Davis tribute with Elliott Sharp! $14.

8.SATOKO FUJII TRIO-Toward , "To West" (enja 9382) Featuring Mark Dresser and Jim Black. Satoko is a brilliant avant-jazz pianist, composer & band-leader. This is her 2nd downtown trio date after her Tzadik debut. She also heads two great big bands! $14.

9.SUZANNE LANGILLE & LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS-1987-1989 (Secretly Canadian 34) Sad, haunting and beautiful duo effort featuring Suzanne's ghost-like vocals & Loren's guitars doing all covers stretched almost beyond recognition. $10.

10.HUW GOWER-Ile de France (TCBH 1) Excellent pop/rock/folk/jazz offering from former member of Magic Muscle (obscure Brit psych band w/ Twink) and the Records. Diverse influences like Richard Thompson, Dire Straits and Mose Allison! $14.

11.WHIRLIGIG-spin (Prime cd 70) Endearing world-Celtic-pop band featuring Greg Anderson & Yves Duboin (Dr. Nerve), Matt Darriau (Paradox Trio) and guest vocalists Terre Roche & Susan McKeown! Mostly traditional tunes graciously done! $14.

12.DAVE PIER QUINTET-swimmers (wakeup 7534) Featuring Roswell Rudd on trombone. Dave is an impressive young modern jazz pianist whose quintet navigates nicely through quiet, free, composed and more rambunctious areas. $13.

13.KEITH TIPPETT'S MUJICIAN & THE GEORGIAN ENSEMBLE-The Bristol Concert (What Disc 2000) An outstanding achievement and best cd of the year so far!! Mujician are one of the finest (British) improv quartets who consistently blow minds! Led by acoustic piano legend Keith Tippett, who here conducts an extended version of Mujician with special guests Julie Tippett and an amazing Russian ensemble!! $17.

14.PASCAL COMELADE-September Song (Les Disques Du Soleil 54073) Featuring Robert Wyatt on the Kurt Weill title tune. Completely charming but short 20 minute ep with our favorite vocalist on one track, with enchanting covers of "Signed Curtain" by Matching Mole and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan. Child-like grace. $10.

15.GEORG GRAEWE-BARRE PHILLIPS-PETER VAN BERGEN-other songs (nuscope 1008) Luscious and often ultra-subtle trio of piano-double bass-tenor sax/contrabass clarinet! Superb recording and striking cover art - the nuscope label continues to excel in sonic exploration and elegant packaging! $14.

16.MIMEO [MUSIC IN MOVEMENT ELECTRONIC ORCHESTRA]-Electric Chair + Table (Grob 206/7) Featuring Keith Rowe, Christian Fennesz, Peter Rehberg, Thomas Lehn, Marcus Schmickler, Rafael Toral & more. Live from a 7 hour gig in December of '98 & edited in the studio, this is a who's who of Euro electronic improv! 2 cds for $21.

17.JOHN BUTCHER/PHIL DURRANT-Requests and Antisongs (erstwhile 007) John plays tenor & soprano saxes and Phil does live electronic manipulation. Part of a British trio with John Russell since 1984, this fascinating duo works with improvised acoustic-electronic sonic exploration! $13.

18.THE VANDERMARK 5-Burn the Incline (Atavistic 121) Fourth powerful release from Chicago's finest modern jazz quintet who continually challenge themselves with a diverse array of inspirations like Joe Morris, Ab Baars & Misha Mengelberg (from ICP), William Parker and The Ex! The first run of this release includes a limited edition 2nd live cd of provocative covers by Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Anthony Braxton, Lester Bowie & Joe McPhee!! Two cd version while they last for $16.

9.JIM O'ROURKE & MATS GUSTAFSSON-Xylophonen Virtuosen (Incus 38) Jim plays guitar & junk and Mats plays tenor sax & flute. Both of these cats astonish us with their wealth of diverse activities beyond categorization. Here they delve in more acoustic improv and succeed in more restrained worlds of trance-mission. $17.

20.ALFRED HARTH/IMPERIAL HOOT-secrets of development (Blue Noises 56512) Can't recall the last time we heard from German sax hero Alfred (23) Harth, who worked with John Zorn, John Oswald, Peter Brotzmann, Heiner Goebbels & Cassiber in the 80's. This a strong quartet date for (an unfamiliar)guitar/bass, electronics and drums! $15.

21.RENE LUSSIER-Solos de Guitare Electrique (Ambiances Magnetiques 075) Solo electric guitar improvisations with no overdubs from Montreal's finest progressive plectrum specialist and member of Fred Frith's (amazing) Electric Guitar Quartet! $14.

22.RENE LUSSIER & MARTIN TETREAULT-Qu'ouis-je? (Amb. Mag. 081) With Rene on daxophone & Martin on synthesizer inspired by 'music concrete'and not playing their usual instrumentation. The daxophone was invented by Hans Reichel, while Martin mostly plays turntables (often without records). $14.

23.BEN GOLDBERG-JOHN SCHOTT-TREVOR DUNN-Almost Never (nuscope 1007) Elegant, spacious and chamber-like trio for clarinet, electric guitar and double-bass from three Tzadik recording artists. Ben also leads the well regarded New Klezmer Trio. $14.

24.PAULINE OLIVEROS-Primordial Lift (Table 53) With Tony Conrad & David Grubbs. Cosmic drones for accordion, violin and harmonium. Finally released after long delay. $14

25.CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE-Jamaican Heinekens in Brooklyn (Barooni 021) Environmental location recording from a Brooklyn street fest mixed with sine-tones. $14.

26.FEDERICO UGHI-the space within (Slam 236) British drummer Federico recently moved here & left us with this duo effort with saxists Steve Buckley, Rachel Musson and Matthew Morris. Well done duets, very focused & a cover of John Lewis' "Django" $14.

27.KAHIL EL'ZABAR'S RITUAL TRIO-Africa n' Da Blues (Delmark 519) Featuring Pharoah Sanders & Ari Brown on saxes, Malachi Favors on bass and Kahil on percussion. Spiritually uplifting acoustic jazz from the source. $14.

28.CHICAGO UNDERGROUND TRIO-Flame Thrower (Delmark 521) Actually now a quartet and a strong mix of post-bop, free-jazz, electronica and much more. $14.

29.WITTWER/WERTHER-I (Grob 204) Brutal post-punk, free-jazz, prog-metal guitar/drums duo from Stephan Wittwer (Intakt cds) and Michael Wertmuller! $14.

30.JOHN CAGE-Complete Piano Music Vol. 5 for Two Pianos (DG 6130789) Josef Christof and Steffen Schleiemacher perform this challenging music. 2 cd set for $28.

31.PAUL KOONCE-Walkabout & Back (Mode 90) Award winning composer creates electroacoustic compositions found sounds, collages and computer manipulations. $14.

33.STEVE LACY-Snips (Jazz Magnet 2001) Soprano sax legend's first solo concert in the US - recorded at the Environ loft jazz space in March of 1976! Two cd set for $21.

34.SECRET CHIEFS 3-First Grand Constitution & Bylaws (Mimicry 003) Wacky and wonderful Mr. Bungle offshoot with Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn and Danny Heifetz. Post-surf, noise, soundtrack & world music collide & combine!! Amazing & weird! $14.

35.SECRET CHIEFS 3-Hurqalya/Second Grand Constitution (Mimicry 004) SC3 now add Eyvind Kang and William Winant to their cast while Trevor sits out, a bonus track is included in this reissue which was nearly impossible to find the first time around. $14.

36.SALIM AL'NUR-s/t (ZuTa Music 1007) Salim is a legendary composer and oud player from Iraq who settled in Israel. This cd is an outstanding collection of Salim's classical Arabian music composed between 1938 & 1983! No US distribution yet. $14.

37.GRAHAM COLLIER SEPTET-Deep Dark Blue Centre (disconforme 1957) Most impressive modern jazz from this fine British composer/bassist from 1967 and featuring future Soft Machinists Karl Jenkins & John Marshall, Kenny Wheeler & Phil Lee! $14.

38.GRAHAM COLLIER SEXTET-Down Another Road (Disconforme 1958) Gil Evans-like and even better! From 1969 and featuring the same two pre-Softs plus Harry Beckett on trumpet, Nick Evans on trombone and Stan Sulzmann on saxes! $14.

39.GRAHAM COLLIER MUSIC-Songs for my Father (Disconforme 1959) From 1970 and continually growing in strides. Featuring Alan Skidmore, Tony Roberts & Alan Wakeman on saxes, John Taylor on piano and consistently splendid Harry Beckett! $14.

40.GRAHAM COLLIER MUSIC-Mosaics Live (Disconforme 1960) Outstanding live suite first released in 1971 featuring Harry Beckett (!) on trumpets, Geoff Castle on piano, Alan Wakeman & Bob Sydor on saxes & John Webb on drums! $14.

42.CURVED AIR-Air Conditioning (collector's choice 148) Excellent debut by one of my fave early progressive rock bands featuring the great voice of Sonja Kristina, violin of Darryl Way and keyboards of Francis Monkman. Blew me away at the Fillmore! $13.

43.DYZAN-Time Machine (bellaphon 9108) Mind-blowing second effort from this great German trio featuring four long journeys through middle-eastern, jazz-rock fusion and improv based landscapes. A treasure from 1973! $13.

44.DYZAN-electric silence (bellaphon 9120) German trio continues to soar through marvelous improvised progressive jams on guitars, sitar, saz, tambura, basses, mellotron and drums! A shining gem from 1974! $13.

45.ALVIN LUCIER-Bird and Person Dyning (Cramps 111) Then title piece involves the transformation of electronic bird calls into high pitched resonant oscillations and variations with ear damaging results, while "The Duke of York" applies the same technique to the human voice. Both pieces are from the seventies. $15.

46.DAVID TUDOR-Microphone (Cramps 116) Two thirty plus minute pieces for microphone and feedback extended much longer than the original lp from 1973 and an excellent example of swirling soundscapes. $15.

47.LOU REED-Metal Machine Music (RCA 90670) Lou called this notorious explosive two lp set of layered feedback his classical endeavor - brilliant or bullshit or somewhere in between these two extremes?!? $13.

48.UNIVERSAL SOUNDS OF AMERICA-compilation (Soul Jazz 27) Essential collection of funky-space-age electric jazz from the seventies featuring such gems as The Art Ensemble's classic "Theme de Yoyo", Pharoah Sanders' "Astral Traveling" & Sun Ra's "Space is the Place". Most of these cuts have yet to be reissued! Import for $17.

49.DEFUNKT-Heroes (DIW 838) Thermo-nuclear electric-funk-rock-jazz tribute to Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and James Bond! Japanese import for $18.

50.THE BEST OF BROADSIDE-1962-1988 (Smithsonian Folkways 40130) 5 cd set with 89 tunes from the golden age of protest songs. Impressive box set with 100 page book and featuring Bob Dylan, the Fugs, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone, Lucinda Williams and many more outspoken singers & songwriters! Delayed until September. $54
