NEW RELEASES
FROM DOWNTOWN AND RELATED ARTISTS!
THREE NEW
TZADIK CDS FOR MAY, 2002
JOHN ZORN - IAO music in
sacred light (Tzadik 7338) Featuring Bill
Laswell, Mike Patton, Jennifer Charles, Greg Cohen, Cyro Baptista,
Rebecca Moore, Jim Pugliese, Jamie Saft, Greg Cohen & Beth Hatton.
In
the tradition of Zorn's longform studio compositions, IAO is a
hypnotic seven-movement suite of Alchemy, mysticism, metaphysics and
magic, both black & white.
Inspired in part by the works of Crowley and Kenneth Anger, the 7
movements include exotica, ritual percussion, death metal, ambient,
electronica & female chorus in their scattered range. As listenable
as The Gift, IAO is a major new work from downtown' master of the
unexpected. CD for $14.
JAMIE SAFT - Breadcrumb Sins
(Tzadik 7162) Featuring Chris Kelly on
guitar, Rick Quinones on vox & guitar, Antony on vocals, Robert
Haggis on percussion, Mr. Dorgon on turntables & Jamie on keyboards
and concepts. Cinematic exploration of dub, pop and club music.
Spacey DJ mixes, deep grooves, fucked-up dubs and soulful vocals on
a
variety of explicit subjects. CD for $14.
ZEV - The Saffire Nature
(Tzadik 7161) Legendary downtown
noise/percussion hero for over two decades and Kaballah scholar -
Zev's second release for Avant/Tzadik is a metaphonic meditation on
the mystical text Sefer Yetzirah. Atmospheric and hypnotic symphony
of solo percussion. CD for $14.
THREE NEW RELEASES FROM
THE LAND OF (BILL) LASWELL:
JAH WOBBLE'S SOLARIS - Live
In Concert CD (30 Hertz 18) Featuring
Bill Laswell & Jah Wobble on thunderous electric basses, Harold
Buddon keyboards, Graham Haynes on electric cornet and Jaki Leibezeit
on drums. "Born out of a chance collaboration between Jah Wobble
and
Harold Budd, Solaris brings together an extraordinary line up of
musicians to perform improvised modal adventures in dub, jazz and
ambient music. Solaris gives audiences a rare and unique opportunity
to watch a group of highly eclectic musicians who are pioneers in the
worlds of ambient, post-rock, world and jazz music perform together
for the first time ever. Taking the name for the project from Russian
film maker Andrei Tarkovsky's sci-fi classic 'Solaris', Jah Wobble
talks about his inspiration in the director's faith and belief - "You
get this mystical vision of the world, a certain kind of stillness.
Now the world of film has been influenced by the wacky world of
video, where you've got to have scene changes and fast edits every
second or two. And that reminded me of record companies in the 80's
and 90's. You couldn't let things run for a few bars without change
going on, because god forbid but the audience is so fucking stupid
they might lose the plot, they might get bored. You can't have that,
they've always got to be stimulated. It's very unhealthy shit that's
going on. That's why Tarkovsky is the antidote to that kind of
craziness." Wobble's Solaris project offers its own antidote through
music itself and what cosmic music it is! CD only UK import release
for $16.
MARI BOINE - Remixed: Odda
Hamis (Jazzland 014760/Norway) Mari Boine
is an incredible pop-stylist singer from Norway who has worked with
Jan Garbarek and has had two great releases out previously. Tracks
from her previous albums are given fantastic new life here by
thoughtful, colorful and creative new constructions/mixes provided by
[DMG All-stars!] Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Nils Petter Molvaer (I'm
convinced they add their playing as well, though there are no notes
with this package) and others including Future Prophecies, Thomas
Sonnenberg, Mark De Clive-Lowe, etc. These were extremely hard and
costly to order; we only got a few and the price we have to sell them
for (but still better than any other price we've seen on the web)
means we likely will not re-order. Import CD only for $23.
NILS PETTER MOLVAER - Recoloured:
The Remix Album (Universal Jazz
013591/Germany) Tracks from trumpet-with-electronics virtuoso Nils'
two stellar ECM albums, 'Khmer' and 'Solid Ether', are remixed here
by Bill Laswell, Pascal Gabriel, Jan Bang, Joakim Lone and others.
Worth the [admittedly steep] price of admission just for Laswell's
eight-plus minute mix of "Merciful/Ligotage", but don't be
put off
otherwise: the entire twelve cut program is fantastic from beginning
to end! These were extremely hard and costly to order; we only got a
few and the price we have to sell them for (but still better than
any other price we've seen on the web) means we will likely not
reorder. CD only import release for $23.
FRED FRITH - Accidental (Fred
Records/ReR Fra 01) Any new record from
Fred Frith, one of the world's leading avant rock guitarists and
composers, is a major event. 'Accidental' was commissioned by a
British choreographer who lives in Amsterdam, Paul Selwyn Norton, for
a dance piece made with the Batsheva Company in Tel Aviv. For Fred
it's a return to basics, a series of deeply contrasting moods
achieved with the simplest of means. Throughout the CD, noises of
rusty metal, electronic detritus, bits of random radio, improvised
cut-up vocals and messed up percussion, suggest an unpredictable and
hostile landscape. Fred describes the motivations behind Accidental:
"I'm fascinated by accidents. When I do solo improvisations I think
of myself as being in continuous dialogue with the unexpected, and
its always dynamic. Do I ignore this, do I embrace it, do I integrate
it, do I keep my distance? When making this music I was constantly
using random elements like radio tuning and trying to frame them in
metric or harmonic structures." Fred Frith is the thinking person's
guitar hero. Starting out with Henry Cow, in the early 70's, he later
became a key component of the New York scene, playing with John
Zorn's Naked City, Skeleton Crew, and Massacre (with Bill Laswell).
Along the way he contributed to albums by Robert Wyatt and Brian Eno.
He regularly tours the world as a solo guitar improviser, and in duos
with the likes of ex Pere Ubu and Henry Cow drummer Chris Cutler. As
a contemporary classical composer his works have been performed,
amongst others, by the Ensemble Modern and the Arditti Quartet.
Incredibly, given his history as an avant garde rock guitarist, he is
now a professor of composition at the prestigious Mills College in
Oakland, California. CD only release for $14.
NED ROTHENBERG - Intervals-
Solo Works for Woodwinds, 2001 (Animul
101) Ned is amongst the few who can really do amazing and consistent
things on solo reeds - here on alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet and
shakuhachi - keeping it intriguing for an entire two cd set. Those
few include Anthony Braxton, Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell & John
Zorn. Self-produced two CD set for $16.
EUGENE CHADBOURNE - Texas
Session: Chapter Two to Doug Sahm
(Boxholder 27) The great doctor is back with one of the best releases
of the year featuring a fabulous band with the incredible pedal steel
sorceress Susan Alcorn, Walter Daniels on harmonics and a righteous
rhythm team from the Texas Tornadoes - Speedy Sparks on bass and
Ernie Durawa on drums. This is a tribute to the late, great Doug
Sahm - Tex/Mex rock/r&b legend from the Sir Doug Quintet & Texas
Tornadoes. Both Eugene and Susan Alcorn play inspired, insane and
breathtaking guitar/steel throughout, the rhythm team also kickin'
hard. Dr. Chadbourne's triumphant return to NYC last week was a
beautiful reminder of his unique talents as a dynamic
guitarist-vocalist-lyricist and gentle human spirit. His solo
performance at Robert O'Hare's apt. was one of his best sets ever,
although I shouldn't have eaten that magic brownie and his duo set
with Cooper-Moore at the Brecht Forum was also a marvel! Eugene also
has a couple of new cdrs on his own label, which we hope to get in
soon as well. In the meantime, you gotta get this gem. CD for $14.
WILLIAM PARKER [O'NEAL'S
PORCH] QUARTET - Raining on the Moon
(Thirsty Ear 57119) Featuring Rob Brown on alto sax & flute, Louis
Barnes on trumpet, William Parker on bass & compositions, Hamid
Drake
on drums and Leena Conquest on vocals. The fabulous first effort
from William's current quartet 'O'Neal's Porch' was a surprising pick
for many "best of" lists for last year, although it was completely
sold out and then reissued on Aum Fidelity. Only surprising because
it was a mostly straight ahead, jubilant and infectious gem which
came from the pen of William Parker - most often associated with the
further-out jazz of many of previous projects/bands through his long
career. William's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra has often
featured vocalists (Ellen Christie & Lisa Sokolov) in the past,
as
has his fine duo effort from recent years 'Song Cycle' on Boxholder.
'Raining on the Moon' features the splendid Leena Conquest on vocals
and once more this superb all-star quartet spins hard swinging tales
of joy, hope, passion and struggle. William's thoughtful lyrics also
provide much provocative illumination and humor. There is a good
deal of blues, soul and gospel-like vibes in this music to warm the
coldest of hearts, hence - if there were any fairness in the world of
jazz, we would be hearing some of the songs on that jive-ass jazz
radio station - WBGO. Somehow I doubt it, but we can only hope. CD
only for $15.
WILLIAM PARKER & THE
LITTLE HUEY CREATIVE MUSIC ORCHESTRA - Raincoat
in the River (Eremite 036) Their two sets last night at CB's as part
of the Vision Fest were a complete knock-out - layers of lines for
sub-sections of the horns to whip the spirits into storms of passion
and invention! The four trombones, the five saxes, the three
trumpets, the tuba, the bass and the double drum fury - all over the
top and ferocious in part. This new work was performed live and
recorded in February of last year and it captures this large unit at
during a strong and intense set. CD only for $14.
MARIO PAVONE NU TRIO/QUINTET
- mythos (Playscape 111401) Featuring
Tony Malaby on tenor sax, Steve Bernstein on trumpet, Peter Madsen on
piano, Mario Pavone on contrabass, Matt Wilson & Michael Sarin on
drums. Wow! This has to be thee most inventive and engaging modern
jazz release of the year so far! Mario's phenomenal, forceful and
Mingus-like bass playing and complex, yet swinging compositions push
this all-star new ensemble through an entire world of emotional
navigation and intersecting streams. There a handful of incredible
solos here which show the immense resourcefulness of Madsen on piano,
Malaby on tenor, Bernstein on trumpet, with Mario's contrabass
providing the anchor and consistently pushing both ensembles into the
heavens and beyond! Need I say more?!? CD only for $14.
JIM BLACK & ALASNOAXIS
- Splay (Winter & Winter 76) This is drum
sensation and distinctive downtown composer - Jim Black's second
fabulous release as a leader and it is another amazing long and
winding journey through a variety of genres, moods and shifting
shapes. Alasnoaxis features Hilmar Jensson on electric guitar,
(longtime partner from Pachora & Bloodcount) Chris Speed on tenor
sax
& clarinet, Skuli Sverrisson on electric bass and Jim on drums.
This
is another wonderful adventure which moves between established
categories like electric jazz, rock, world and more freer terrain.
Their cd release celebration set will take place at Tonic on Thursday
May 9th at Tonic, so be there or be square! CD for $15.
ANDY LASTER'S LESSNESS -
Window Silver Bright (New World 80589)
Featuring Andy on baritone sax, Bryan Carrott on vibes & marimba,
Cuong Vu on trumpet, Erik Friedlander on cello and Michael Sarin on
drums. This downtown all-star session features a fine cast, great
playing and excellent composing from one of the better downtown
players who has been around for more than a decade and certainly
deserves wider recognition for his many talents. Produced by Marty
Ehrlich and thoughtful/provocative session. CD for $14.
BILLY BANG - Vietnam the
Aftermath (Justin Time 165) Featuring Ted
Daniel on trumpet, Frank Lowe on tenor sax, Sonny Fortune on flute,
John Hicks on piano, Curtis Lundy on a bass and Michael Carvin on
drums. Inspired by Billy Bang's nightmarish experiences in Vietnam.
HAMID DRAKE & SABIR MATEEN - brothers together (Eremite 035)
Incredible studio duo session brings together our favorite drummer
and percussionist from Chicago with ever-inspired
saxes/clarinet/flute master from Test, Little Huey Creative Music
Orchestra and sessions too prolific to mention here. A superb, wild
and wooly endeavor that pushes these two local giants into new worlds
of sound. CD only for $14.
SONNY SIMMONS/BRANDON EVANS/BRIAN
CLICK/ROSIE SHAKARIAN - Tales of
the Ancient East/For Usad Bismillah Khan (Parallactic 45) The first
cd is an amazing duet with Sonny on soprano, alto & tenor saxes
and
Brandon on soprano, c-melody & tenor saxes & bass clarinet,
while the
second cd features Sonny Simmons on english horn (double reed),
Brandon Evans on various reeds & harmonium, Brian Glick on bass
clarinet and Rosie on synth. Two cd set for $18.
SUZANNE LANGILLE & SAN
AGUSTIN - Passing Song (Family Vineyard 9)
Exquisite bluesy, folky, spacey somber reflections from half of
(Loren Mazzacane's) now defunct Haunted House band. Melancholy,
stark and thoroughly enchanting. CD only for $10.
FIVE NEW,
HISTORIC & EXCITING PROGRESSIVE GEMS
FROM OUR FAVORITE LABEL - CUNEIFORM!
AND NEW STUFF FROM SOME OF OUR EUROPEAN HEROES!!!
SOFT MACHINE - Backwards
(Cuneiform 170) One of the most critically
acclaimed, far-reaching and influential avant rock bands that ever
was - Soft Machine, named after a novel by William Burroughs. The
band was formed in Canterbury, Kent, England in 1966 by Daevid Allen
(guitar), Kevin Ayers (bass/vocals), Mike Ratledge (keyboards) and
Robert Wyatt (drums/vocals). This lineup transformed and evolved over
the years, mirroring the metamorphoses in the band's music from more
pop/psych to more jazz influences. By August, 1967, Allen had already
left Soft Machine. As a trio consisting of Ratledge, Ayers and Wyatt,
Soft Machine performed two U.S. tours (accompanied by road manager
Hugh Hopper) as the Jimi Hendrix Experience's opening band, and in
mid-1968 recorded an album known as 'Volume One'. The band broke up
after the second tour, but quickly reformed to fulfill a prior
recording commitment, enlisting Hugh Hopper as their new bassist
after Ayres' departure. In the fall of 1969, Soft Machine added a
four piece horn section that included saxists Elton Dean and Lyn
Dobson, cornetist Marc Charig and trombonist Nick Evans. This 'big
band' version of Soft Machine did several tours. By January, 1970,
Soft Machine existed as the quintet of Dean, Ratledge, Hopper, Wyatt
and saxist/flutist Dobson. At the end of Soft Machine's early 1970
European tour, Dobson left the band. Soft Machine then metamorphosed
into its most famous version: the "classic" quartet of Dean,
Ratledge, Hopper and Wyatt.
'Backwards' is comprised of recordings from three different and
intriguing eras of the band, and includes liner notes written by
Canterbury music scholar Aymeric Leroy. 'Backwards' begins with three
tracks from May, 1970: a recording of the "classic" quartet
made
about the time that Soft Machine had finished recording its acclaimed
'Third' album(a 2 lp set). The recording is mono, but the sonic
quality is superb, this may be the single finest recording of the
quartet version of Soft Machine, surpassing even the band's official
studio releases. The next two tracks on 'Backwards' are recordings of
performances from November, 1969, featuring the "big band"
septet
version. Since the only other available material by this version of
the band is 20' of BBC recordings, this is an invaluable addition to
the band's recorded legacy. 'Backwards' concludes with Robert Wyatt's
original demo of "Moon In June", a tune the band would later
record
for 'Third'. The demo version which appears here, taken from the
original acetate, was recorded in two parts and spliced together by
the band. Robert Wyatt recorded the first half of "Moon in June"
solo
in the fall of 1968, while he remained in the U.S. following Soft
Machine's break up at the end of its second US tour. After the band
reformed with Hopper on bass, the trio of Ratledge, Wyatt, and Hopper
recorded the last half of the demo in 1969 and spliced on the ending.
Documenting such key moments in the band's career, tracing Soft
Machine's metamorphoses back over time, Backwards is an important
addition to Soft Machine's recorded legacy, "...one of the most
adventurous avant-garde rock bands everS. CD for $13.
THE MUFFINS - Bandwidth (Cuneiform
161) The Muffins - the band whom
Fred Frith called "the finest progressive band America produced"
-
are back after an absence of two decades. 'Bandwidth', in production
for more than two years, is the first album of new music by the band
since 1980. Reformed in its best-known quartet version, the band
sounds like it had never been apart. The Muffins' new music remains
"progressive" to its core in the truest meaning of that term:
forward
looking, boundary bursting, innovative, and yes, astonishingly fresh.
The Muffins' origins date from 1974, when the band formed in
Washington D.C.'s Maryland suburbs. They were one of the best-known
members of an internationally renowned progressive scene that
flourished in the D.C. area during the 1970s, years before that
city's hard-core punk scene rose to prominence. By 1976, the had band
adopted the lineup that became its best-known version: a quartet
featuring Dave Newhouse (keyboards and reeds), Billy Swann (bass,
guitar, and vocals), Tom Scott (woodwinds), and Paul Sears (drums).
Influenced by Soft Machine, Hatfield & The North, Henry Cow, Sun
Ra,
the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and many other jazz and European
progressive rock bands, this quartet forged a committed following in
the USA and abroad during the 1970's until 1981, when they split up.
In 1998, all four members of the band reformed and began developing
a
new repertoire and performing concerts. Since their re-formation,
they have played shows & festivals in Washington D.C., New York
City,
Rome, Italy and North Carolina. In a world glutted with half-baked
reformations by bands looking to cash in on past glories, Bandwidth
is the genuine article; a reformation of all the original members who
have gotten together not for money, but because they miss what they
had done together in the past and who feel that they still have
something to say. CD for $13.
UNIVERS ZERO - Rhythmix (Cuneiform
165) One of the founding members
of the original "Rock In Opposition" [R.I.O.] movement, Univers
Zero
was founded in 1974. They are legendary for their ominous, unsettling
and uncompromising musical vision - a sound and stance most aptly
described as "Chamber music for the Apocalypse" (Keyboard
Magazine).
Its distinctive, dark and elegantly beautiful "chamber rock"
style
derives from unique instrumentation (piano and keyboards, violin,
clarinets, oboe/bassoon, bass, guitar, drums) combined with brooding
gothic imagery, elements of European folk music, the iconoclasm and
intensity of rock, and composer Daniel Denis' classically-inspired
writing style, influenced by early 20th Century avant garde classical
composers. In the hands of some of the best musicians of Europe,
these factors result in a group on the cutting edge of creating a
new, vital, and unique fusion of classical and rock music. Univers
Zero has stretched and disintegrated the boundaries of classical and
rock music alike throughout the course of its career, producing a
sound that is equally passionate and sophisticated and always on the
cutting edge. In Rhythmix, Denis draws upon the rich legacy of
Univers Zero's oeuvre, using both the acoustic colorations (bassoon,
oboe, harmonium) of the band's earliest releases and the electric
vibe (electronic keyboards and synthesizers) that marked Univers Zero
releases from the mid-1980s. He also expands the Univers Zero's sound
by using a greater number of musicians (10), and adding
instrumentation - flute, trumpet, acoustic guitar, marimba and
accordion - not customarily used by the band. In addition to Denis
(drums, percussion, keyboard, harmonium), musicians on Rhythmix
include Michel Berckmans (oboe, English horn, bassoon); Aurelia Boven
(cello), Ariane De Bievre (flute, piccolo), Dirk Descheemaeker (bass
clarinet, Bart Maris (trumpet), Eric Plantain (electric bass),
Christophe Pons (acoustic guitar) Bart Quartier (marimba,
glockenspiel), and Louison Renault (accordion). Rhythmix shows that,
nearly three decades after it was first formed, Univers Zero
continues to evolve, expanding and experimenting with the boundaries
of New Music, and, in the words of Exposé, "proving themselves
to be
one of the best and most important groups on the planet. CD for $13.
DEUS EX MACHINA - Cinque
(Cuneiform 159) One of the finest
avant/progressive bands in the world today, Deus Ex Machina has
carved out an enviable reputation with its amazingly high energy live
shows and critically acclaimed live and studio albums. The Italian
band is a sextet of top notch musicians including Alessandro Bonetti
(violin), Fabrizio Puglisi (Hammond organ/Fender Rhodes piano/Arp
synth), Maurino Collina (guitar) Alessandro Porreca (bass), Claudio
Trotta (drums), and vocalist Alberto Piras. The band's music is a
heady, playful fusion of classic hard rock and progressive rock and
jazz, topped with the incredible vocals of Piras, one of the most
extraordinary vocalists working in rock music today. Notably, the
classically-trained Piras sings in both Latin (!) and Italian and has
a voice which some love and some do not. The band states that "the
Latin lyrics originate from their desire to reconcile the melodious
nature of Italian (which is difficult to transpose into rock) with
the immediacy and fluency of English. Latin presented itself as the
ideal solution." Deus Ex Machina first formed in 1985 in Bologna,
Italy. During the 1990s, the band released four studio and two live
albums. The band has toured the US four times since 1994, including
performing before a sold-out audience of over 1,000 at NEARfest 2001.
'Cinque', Deus Ex Machina 5th studio recording, is the band's first
release on Cuneiform and their first album release outside of Italy.
A powerful work of jazz/rock fusion and progressive rock, it is the
culmination of the band's search for, in their words, "an even
deeper
rock impact." Their set at the Knit last year was outstanding!
CD
for $13.
156 STRINGS - 19 Totally
Original Acoustic Guitarists (Cuneiform 163)
Curated by guitarist and producer Henry Kaiser, '156 Strings' is a
compilation designed to showcase some of the most unique and highly
personal work currently being done on the acoustic guitar. A longtime
fan of the "master creators" of American, steel-string, instrumental
guitar - musicians such as John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Peter Lang, and
Leo Kottke - Kaiser created this compilation to highlight, in his own
words, some of the "many players today who are operating at those
elevated levels of acoustic eloquence." The early Takoma Records
sampler lps compiled by John Fahey, and Fred Frith's "Guitar Solos"
lps provided Kaiser with editorial inspiration; as he says in his
liner notes: "Those releases were portals that many listeners went
through to discover new artists and sounds." '156 Strings' includes
pieces by the following 19 acoustic guitarists, each and every one of
them, in Kaiser's words, "sound like themselves and have something
special to say." Featuring Duck Baker, Stefan Basho-Junghans, Raoul
Bjorkenheim, Jean-Paul Bourelly, Nels Cline, Janet Feder, Fred Frith,
Michael Gulezian, Richard Leo Johnson, Henry Kaiser, Mike Keneally,
Peter Lang, Scott McGill, Shawn Persinger is Prester John, Rod Poole,
Gyan Riley, Miroslav Tadic, Richard Thompson and U Tin. CD for $13.
BARRY GUY/HOWARD RILEY/PHILIPP
WACHSMANN - Improvisations are Forever
Now (Emanem 4070) Two excellent studio sessions from this superb trio
of contrabass, piano and violin/electronics. This is a reissue of an
impossible-to-find rare album with twenty minutes of previously
unreleased improvisations added. Three master musicians and former
members of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra are featured. CD only
reissue plus for $17.
TREVOR WATTS & VERYAN
WESTON - Six Dialogues (Emanem 4069) This is
Spontaneous Music Ensemble alto saxist extraordinaire - Trevor Watts'
first free improv session in about 25 years with the equally engaging
pianist - Veryan Weston. Trevor has been leading the more (African)
groove-oriented Moire Music Ensemble, since his days with the SME,
while Veryan has kept busy doing much great improvisations with Lol
Coxhill, Phil Minton (in Four Walls) and a variety of other great
British players. This is an unreleased studio date on CD only for
$17.
PAUL RUTHERFORD - Trombolenium
(Emanem 4072) An astonishing
collection of adventurous trombone solos from one of the true masters
recorded over nine years in four different spaces - two from club
sets, an Italian festival and a very resonate church. A previously
unissued CD only release for $17.
JOELLE LEANDRE/SYLVIE COURVOISIER/SUSIE
IBARRA - passaggio (Intakt
075) Three extraordinary women improvisers (contrabass/piano
innards/percussion) playing their incredible spontaneous
compositions in the studio and live at the Taklos Fest in switzerland
from last year. CD only for $15.
HUGH HOPPER/GARY SMITH/SHOJI
HANO - Glass Cage (Paratactile 1110)
This is some heavy duty, mind-blowing, power trio insanity featuring
Soft Machine's Hugh Hopper on electric fuzz bass, Gary Smith on
mutated stereo electric guitar and the powerhouse drumming of Shoji
Hano (last seen w/ P. Brotzmann & Haino Keiji). Too much! $17.
OTOMO YOSHIHIDE/OTANI YASUHIRO/XAVIER
CHARLES/ALMA FURY - High Tones
For Winter Fashion (Textile 001) This is a collaboration CD, a match
up between French and Japanese established improvisers. Xavier
Charles: As a clarinetist, bassist and DIY enthusiast, Xavier Charles
played with several noisy, electronica and sonic poetry activists :
Martin Tétreault, The Ex, Étage 34, Axel Dörner,
John Butcher, Chris
Cutler, Camel Zekri, & Michel Doneda. Actually, his musical searches
include clarinet, prepared bass and vibrating loudspeakers for a
sonic universe somewhere between improved music, noisy rock and
electroacoustic. Otomo Yoshihide: After 8 years spent as Ground
Zero's leader, Otomo Yoshihide is now involved in various projects
mixing turntables, guitar & samplers - known as DJ Tranquilizer,
Filament or Microcosmos. Following the example of Erik M, Martin
Tétreault or Christian Marclay (and even if he admits their
influence) but also Pierre Schaeffer, Derek Bailey and the very first
Hip Hop DJs, his use of turntables is such incredible that he can't
be considered as a proper DJ. Alma Fury: These days, Almá Fury
are
sculpting a shifting soundscape of electric and electronic noise,
letting fantasy guide them, as they mix varied and tangential sonic
materiel. With a setup that includes - moog, voice, guitar,
cassettes, samples, drum machine and percussion ; sonic
experimentation and playful creativity are all-important. CD only
French import for $15.

long, free-flowing and intense pieces. This wonderful ensemble will

PETER BROTZMANN CHICAGO TENTET

JOHN RUSSELL - From Next

guitar effort from one of England's finest improvisers who has played
fine duos with Roger Turner, a trio with Maarten Altena & Terry

EVAN PARKER/NOEL AKCHOTE
QUARTET- Live at "Les Instants Chavires"
(Leo 255) Featuring Evan Parker on soprano sax, Noel Akchote on
electric guitar, Lawrence Casserley and Joel Ryan on electronics.
This release actually came out in '98 when Leo's distribution was in
limbo and is now back in print. This long and ever-engaging live set
is from December of 1997 of on stage experimentation at the Banlieues
Bleues Festival in France. Both Casserley and Ryan do live
processing or sonic manipulation and are also members of Evan's
Electro-Acoustic Ensemble (two cds on ECM). This is some of the most
challenging/difficult music I have encountered and it takes some
immense stamina and patience to swim through this often dense alien
universe of sounds for 77 _ minutes. Both Evan's soprano and Noel's
amplified guitar match wits profoundly throughout, as do both
processing wizards provide many sonic surprises. CD only release for
$15.
ROGER SMITH - Green Wood
(Emanem 4073) Another splendid collection
solo acoustic guitar improvisations recorded at home from one of
woefully neglected masters. CD only release for $17.
MIKE OSBORNE - Outback (FMR
031994) An outstanding reissue featuring
the legendary British alto sax giant Mike Osborne, Harry Beckett on
trumpet, Chris McGregor on piano, Harry Miller on bass & Louis Moholo
on drums. Burnin' quintet and this label is impossible to find, so
grab it quick...CD only for $17.
KEITH TIPPETT/HOWARD RILEY
- In Focus (Jazzprint 111) Remarkle piano
duo live set from two of England's finest piano masters from 1984 and
before released on cd! CD only for $17.
PETER KOWALD & CARLOS
BECHEGAS - Open Secrets - a Suite in 13 Parts
(Forward 01) Monster improv bassist Peter Kowald just moved here up
in Harlem - lucky us!!!! He will playing a solo set here at DMG on
Wed. June 12th at 7pm! This is a wonderful duo with a great Spanish
flute player named Carlos Bechegas. CD only and only a few for $14.
FRANZ KOGLMANN - Don`t Play,
Just Be CD (Between the Lines 021) Franz
Koglmann, who likes to cross borders, pursues a dialogue between
styles. Using this dialogue, which he consciously allows to include
disruptions, Koglmann elegantly and expertly weaves his way along a
path that avoids both the classical jazz clichés and the hermetics
of
e-music. His cool way of bridging worlds is often referred to as the
'3rd Vienna School' by critics. On 'Don't Play, Just Be', Koglmann
collaborates with one of the world's leading New Music orchestras,
the Klangforum Wien, conducted by Emilio Pomárico, and with numerous
outstanding jazz soloists. He impressively succeeds in harnessing the
traditions of classical modernism and jazz for his very own world of
sound. The four movements of the suite 'Don't Play, Just Be' are a
dialogue between a jazz quartet the legendary British tenor
saxophonist and clarinettist Tony Coe, guitar virtuoso James Emery
from New York, Franz Koglmann on the fluegelhorn and Klangforum
bassist Uli Fussenegger. The dialogue is enhanced by references to a
text by Jean Cocteau and the films of Jacques Rivette, as well as
hints of French film scores brought in by the accordion and violin.
CD only for $15.

JOHN LINDBERG QUINTET - Two
By Five (Between the Lines 19) Featuring
John Lindberg (bass/composer), Miriam Bolkosky (cello), Wendy Richman
(violin), Rebecca Ansel (violin), and Gabriel Bolkosky (violin).
Special notes: John Lindberg meets the Ann Arbor String Quartet. John
Lindberg was never one to appreciate the placid waters of prettily
colored mainstream music: Ever since the beginning of his career,
which spans more than two decades, Mr. Lindberg continues as a
virtuoso bass player and has been at the center of advanced musical
developments. The big names of the avant-garde dominate his
biography: from Joe Bowie to Anthony Braxton and Albert Mangelsdorff.
They represented creative music in regions which were constantly
being newly discovered, music to which Lindberg made an essential
contribution. He was one of the founders of the String Trio Of New
York -- the ensemble with James Emery (guitar) and a changing line-up
has been in existence since 1981-- which provided the bassist with a
sphere for experimentation with interaction in a chamber music
setting. This trio, which was greatly acclaimed by the critics, was
not the only context in which Lindberg excelled as a sideman or
leader in different line-ups and with uncommon compositions. 'Two By
Five' features two longer compositions structured around several
themes and episodes in an original musical context. With his masterly
performance on the bass, Lindberg leads the Ann Arbor String Quartet
in an adventure in sound that cannot be assigned to any one level of
style. Tension builds up as sharp-edged melodies and rhythms give a
jazz touch to classic avant-garde excursions before the imaginative
navigator heads for islands of lyrical calm. CD for $16.
5 DIFFICULT TO FIND CD'S
from AUSTALIA'S NEW AVANT-JAZZ PIANO TRIO -
THE NECKS: Seeing/hearing them up at Victo was a hypnotic experience
- for an entire hour their acoustic bassist played this fine,
repeating four note phrase over and over, while the drummer (Tony
Buck from Kletka Red & Peril) embellished each note with swirling
fluidity and their wonderful pianist - Chris Abrahams (Laughing
Clowns) played layers of repeating phrases which built into a Soft
Machine like flurry of intersecting lines and patterns.
THE NECKS - Aether (Fish
of Milk 0007) From 2001 and a CD only release for $16.
THE NECKS - Next (Shock Records
001) Another gem from 1990 from two
of our favorites composers/player. CD only import release for $16.

THE ALLENKO BROTHERHOOD ENSEMBLE
- Compilation (Comet 022/France) As
a part of the legendary Africa 70's band with Fela Kuti, Tony Allen
was one of the progenitors of the Afrobeat sound. After parting
company with Fela in 1977 he left Nigeria for Europe, to confront his
music with different cultures and to grow through collaboration with
other artists. During this time he collaborated with Manu Dibango,
Roy Ayers and Ray Lema amongst others. It is this spirit of
innovation through collaboration that fuels The Allenko Brotherhood
Ensemble. Comet Records head Eric Trosset explains; 'The idea here
was not about remixing Tony Allen's music, quite the opposite, our
aim was for each producer to give their own personal take on Afrobeat
music using Tony Allen's drum patterns as a starting point.' The
Allenko Brotherhood Ensemble: a project conceived and produced by
Comet Records. Creating a meeting between the unique drumming style
of Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen and the best in contemporary
musicians/ producers from across Europe. Available separately over
the last 12 months through a series of limited vinyl 12"s, The
Allenko Brotherhood Ensemble includes exclusive tracks from the
following diverse array of producers: Cinematic Orchestra, Son Of
Scientists feat. Eska, Troublemakers, Off-World Ensemble, Jeff
Sharel, Bigga Bush, Joakim Lone, Unsung Heroes feat. Ty and Bries,
Rogall, Kraked Unit, Tweak, Boozoo Bajou. CD only release for $14.
A BATCH
OF RELEASES FROM OUR FAVORED
CLASSICAL AND ELECTRONIC COMPOSERS
AN ANTHOLOGY OF NOISE &
ELECTRONIC MUSIC - Vol. 1 (Sub Rosa 190) Sub
Rosa presents part 1 of a vast anthology of noise and electronic
music to be released during the next few years in seven volumes.
'Volume 1' begins in the 1920s, with the Russolo Brothers, and looks
at each decade in turn -- Varése, Cage, Schaeffer, Xenakis, the
great
pioneers -- and shows the first traces of a music that was
necessarily revolutionary: electronic music, created from nothing
(and hence to be entirely invented). Some pieces on these CDs are
certainly classics, but there are others, which, though old, were
distributed informally or never even released. The more contemporary
pieces are, wherever possible, previously unreleased. In fact, more
than the half of what we listen here is unreleased and unpublished.
This most impressive two cd set comes as a digipak with 24 page
booklet. The artists include: Luigi & Antonio Russolo, Walter
Ruttman, Pierre Schaeffer, Henri Pousseur, Gordon Mumma, Angus
Maclise, Tony Conrad & John Cale, Philip Jeck, Otomo Yoshihide &
Martin Tétreault, Survival Research Laboratories, Einsturzende
Neubauten, Konrad Boehmer, Nam June Paik, John Cage, Sonic Youth,
Edgard Varése, Iannis Xenakis, DJ Spooky, Pauline Oliveros and
Ryoji
Ikeda. Two cd only set for $17.
JOHN CAGE - Variations IV
(Legacy 439) Live performance from the
Feigen/Palmer Gallery in L.A. from August of 1965. Six excerpts from
7pm-1am, which consist of a network on microphones which record
random sounds from the performance that evening. CD only for $10.
PIERRE HENRY - Mix 04.0 4CD
(Philips 2201/France) This is the fourth
box-set in Philips/Universal's miraculous Pierry Henry reissue
program, up to the usual high quality standards. This box-set
contains three previously available CD's - 'Mix 04.1', 'Mix 04.2',
'Mix 04.3' plus an unreleased bonus double album only available in
this box-set: MIX04.4 2-CD 'Dieu' (77). 'Dieu' was previously issued
on LP by Philips in 1978, but is one the more obscure Henry
recordings and it has never been on CD; and it is assumed that this
double CD is the complete recording (clocking in at 1 hour, 50
minutes), compared to the Philips LP. The pieces include "Scènes
musicales inspirées de 'Dieu' de Victor Hugo" and "Création
au
Festival de Lille 1977 et à Paris au Palais des Arts". Six
CD French
import box set for $56.
FRANCOIS BAYLE - La forme
du temps est un cercle (Inagram 01) Volume
15 of Inagram's complete Françoise Bayle series, featuring the
60-minute title piece (from 1999/2001). "Nature - that reservoir
of
organisms and temporal forms - proposes many patterns to our rhythmic
imagination breathing, pulses, ebb and flow, a day's circle or the
passage of seasons... My project, the idea behind this work, is to
arouse the desire or pleasure of listening by presenting rather
temporal perceptions based on their images, figures, impetus and
vividness. Several 'moments' therefore that such entities traverse
shall attempt to demonstrate special aspects of time's 'grain,' in
order to prolong its emotional potential. Here then, are some of
time's such figures at work. There is the one that hurries then
flees, - the one that pounds and hammers, - that breaks the wave, -
that moves backwards and does an about- face, - that splashes into a
shower, - that trickles like rain, - that flows, while dripping off,
- that slowly forms a bead, - that spurts out in jolts, - that
gyrates in a whirl, - that evaporates... Variations from 'knocks' to
'traces,' from a heavy pulse to melody, from a tolling bell and its
mysterious concurring powers to the furrows of clouds of dust and
orbits circulating at various speeds, not to mention the various
'paces' of the pulse itself. At the end of the five stages, the
listener will have completed a trajectory, one of temporal unity
beginning from the finest 'grain' and progressively focusing his/her
perception in order to discern and identify images and forms. Colors'
transience, speeding figures will be resolved in a spiral (the
three-dimensional form of a circle), by which the initial sound-image
(tolling bells) will infinitely evolve into the final sound-image:
that of summer crickets during a night of suspended, dream-like
time." -- Bayle. CD only for $15.
CONRAD SCHNITZLER - Rot (Very
Good Records/Germany) Legit repress
from the master tapes of this phenomenal German electronic/avant
garde musician's first solo effort from 1972. The cd reissue is
currently out-of-print. Very rough and intense electronic
sounds/music and not at all ambient - essential for those who wish to
be thoroughly challenged by a sonic assault! German import LP only
reissue on red vinyl for $14.
CONRAD SCHNITZLER - Blau
(Very Good Records/Germany) Schnitzler's
second sonic electronic disturbance from 1973. Originally released
in a limited edition of 500 copies, both Schnitzler albums and all
three Kluster albums are among the rarest and most after of all
krautrock legendary discs. Devastating and brutal sounds. German
import LP only reissue on blue vinyl for $14.
HENRY FLYNT - New American
Ethnic Music Volume 2: Spindizzy (Record
006) This is an amazing document of the nihilist father of concept
art and inventor of electronic hillbilly music (see
http://www.henryflynt.org). The record shows more than ever Flynt's
musical genius, the audacity of his compositions (which seek to exalt
rural southern music to a level beyond this civilization) and the
strange qualitative fluidity of his playing. The recording also has
a
much clearer hillbilly/bluegrass quality than his previous releases,
including some fiddle solos that can be mistaken for field recordings
of inspired musicians from the heyday of traditional bluegrass music.
At the same time, the record is also full of surprises and some very
strange compositional ideas, all tightly unified within Flynt's
ineffable singular vision. CD only release for $15.
HENRY FLYNT - Raga Electric
(Locust 06) In the early '60s, fresh from
his clean behind the ears years at Harvard, Henry was undergoing
rapid ideological shifts: cavorting with Maciunas and the whole
Fluxus bit, doing performances at Yoko Ono's loft and recording with
La Monte Young; having it out with his Stalinist cohorts over the
relative merits of a good blues run and searching for a new musical
language outside of the various generic artistic restrictions before
him at the time. What he arrived at was an expressive practice he
dubbed audact (auditory acognitive cultural activity) and that is
what you will hear on this collection. Collecting key material from
1963 to 1971, 'Raga Electric' is a seven piece distillation of some
of Henry's most adventurous, audactatious, outsider musical
endeavors. The record begins with, of all things, a hybrid, off the
wall treatment of the traditional supranationalist anthem "The
Marine's Hymn" sung in a thick tongued, fully untudored Hindustani
vocalese to brilliantly sun drenched, lightly strummed acoustic
guitar accompaniment. The title cut, 'Raga Electric', is a twisted,
howling fake hindustani rag with staccato untuned guitar and bleating
screams recorded at his home just a few short hours after catching
Pandit Pran Nath at a downtown morning concert. The howling orgasmic
yodel of a visionary's self-posession and certain surrender on this
1966 cut puts Henry somewhere at the epicenter of the folk
isolationist world of Jandek and the ethnodislocation of the Sun City
Girls, to name but a few. The side long closer, 'Free Alto', is a
monstrous exploration of the ins and outs of the tenor saxophone
which, upon hearing it, Terry Riley referred to as 'a very
articulated musical program'. Though it remains Henry's single
meeting with the instrument, over the course of some 13 odd minutes,
he finds out everything he needs to know about the horn and gets into
some pretty hairy free squelch and squeal territory in the process.
'I was just pulling sounds out of a hat and just stringing them
together,' he recently told me. As hats go, this one should fit the
heads of today's listeners just fine." - Dawson Prater. CD only
for
$14.
JOSEPH SUCHY - Entskidoo
(Entenpfuhl 005) 'Entskidoo' is the fourth
solo album of the Cologne-based guitarist Joseph Suchy, an album
which will no doubt soon be regarded as his 'magnum opus'. Suchys'
ability to transcend borders is manifested in his numerous diverse
collaborations, be they with Kato Hideki, Kevin Drumm and Jean-Marc
Montera or Jan St.Werner, F.X. Randomiz and Ekkehard Ehlers. The fact
that Entskidoo evokes at times a putative orchestra from everyone
involved, is more to do with Joseph Suchy's use of the whole gamut of
his know-how as producer and studio musician, both technically and
compositionally, as well as his creation of a brilliantly resonant
network of playing styles and overlaps. The result is something
resembling a rhizomatous adaptation of an imaginary archive of 'avant
garde' music, be it electronic music, music concrète, improvised
music or noise. One is only seemingly enticed down the well-trodden
path by the wealth of allusions, before ultimately succumbing in the
sound labyrinth of unexpected sequences, tonal palimpsests and
non-linear crossovers; and yet one cannot escape the conclusion that
there are simply more ideas here per track than on many an
'experimental' album. 'Entskidoo' ought to delight fans of both
Kaffee Matthews and Rafel Toral alike. And for those individuals, who
are not only at home with Fennesz's guitar sound, but also with Loren
Mazzane-Connors, or those who are fascinated by the analogies
between, say, Oval and AMM, well, this album ought to be like a dream
come true. CD only release for $14.

career. 2 CD set for $22
NOAH HOWARD QUARTET - At
Documenta IX (Boxholder 25) Featuring
Michael Smith on piano, Jack Gregg on bass, Chris Henderson on drums
and Noah Howard on alto sax. This is a great live quartet set from a
German festival in 1992, which goes from the more inside to the more
outside and sails and soars throughout. Michael Smith is an
outstanding, legendary and relatively under-recognized pianist who
you might know from a few great albums he made in the seventies,
including a duo lp with Steve Lacy. Anyone know what's become of
him? CD for $14.
LEE HAZLEWOOD - Lounge Legends
(Polydor 9882/Germany) His hip
mid-to-late-sixties MGM recordings -- on CD for the first time ever,
including Lee's own versions of hits made famous by Dean Martin,
Nancy Sinatra and many others... Lee Hazlewood, the small-town
Oklahoma boy, has been an enigmatic figure in the music world for
almost 50 years. Although his name may not be known to the casual
music listener, his work as a songwriter, producer and performer has
changed the sound of modern music. Hazlewood was one of the first of
the legendary producers that used the studio as a lab for
experimentation using only the best studio musicians. Throughout the
late 50s and early 60s, Lee was the brain behind many different
'experiments in sound' (for example the twangy guitar sound of Duane
Eddy, Sanford Clark and Al Casey). The tracks included in this
collection are taken from the three albums he recorded for MGM - 'The
Very Special World of Lee Hazlewood', 'Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause
and Cure' and 'Something Special' - which was released in Germany
only and remains one of his rarest LPs. CD only compilation for $13.
BURT BACHARACH - Lounge Legends
(Polydor 5021/Germany) Lounge Legends
is a new series of compilations from German Polydor, focusing on the
classic era works of the "original masters of lounge"; good
track
selections, thematic packaging with liner notes and repro's of the
original LP jackets that these tracks come and inexpensively priced.
Burt Bacharach often tells a story about his early days studying
composing in California. The vogue among students at the time was
towards the atonal and avant garde, but his professor, Darius
Milhaud, spotted something in the young man and offered a simple
piece of advice: "Never feel embarrassed by a melody people can
whistle," thus granting permission for the birth of the 20th
century's greatest melodicist and the creation of a body of work that
is as sophisticated as the best Lounge Music and at the same time as
heartfelt as the best pop and soul tunes. Bacharach's charming songs
have been interpreted by nearly everyone. They bring out the best in
the singers, instrumentalists and arrangers who touch them, as this
compilation proves. Includes performances by: Scott Walker, Sergio
Mendes, Brenda Lee, Dusty Springfield, Connie Francis, Astrud
Gilberto, The Sandpipers, etc. CD only compilation for $13.
JOHN BARRY: Lounge Legends
(Polydor 5317/Germany) John Barry has been
composing music for films since 1960. Brilliant, inventive and loaded
with emotional uncertainty, his work offers a mood palette for spy
thrillers, heady dramas, period epochs, and dark comedies. He has
managed to play the mainstream game yet keep a singular, sometimes
twisted edge. In 1972, Barry embarked on more adventures in
melancholy mischief after signing an exclusive contract with Polydor
to record some haunting, humorous, romantic and macabre
reinterpretations of his choice movie, television and stage themes.
The albums 'Play It Again', 'The Very Best of John Barry' and 'The
Concert John Barry' are the fruits of these sessions and the source
for most of the instrumental tracks presented here. Lush and darkly
sentimental strings weep like the theme to "Midnight Cowboy"
have
been Barry's forte, but with his clever folio of harpsichord,
mandolin, acoustic guitar, cellos, a sly electric bass, and sonic
intimations of a phantom circus, he also enjoys seeming whimsical one
moment and menacing the next. A favorite of numerous downtown icons,
both Naked City and Sex Mob have covered a number of his gems. CD
only compilation for $13.
