N E W S L E T T E R # 21

As we all get older, life gets to be so much more complex, confusing, overwhelming. Things just don't make sense, so much seems so unfair. Great people die young & bad people get elected and ruin/run our lives. After the recent loss of my close friend & inspiration-Thomas Chapin, I feel lost, empty, about to break down &cry at any quiet moment. I've been pushing myself-drinking wine, smoking too much, not sleeping well, trying to create a haze to forget... sorry to burden all/any of you. The tribute gig at the Knit on March 1st for Thomas was a truly beautiful night. Hearing so much of his music played with such love by a dozen of his musician buddies. Acoustic bass master & Thomas' right hand partner-Mario Pavone navigated ... There were truly amazing solos by Marty Ehrlich, Ned Rothenberg & John Zorn who played one of those special solos that parts the heavens! There will be a memorial service for Thomas here in NYC at St. Peters Church 619 Lexington Ave. at 54th St. (Citicorp Ctr.) on March 30th at 6pm.

NEW RELEASES NEW RELEASES NEW RELEASES NEW RELEASES:

1.JOHN ZORN/MASADA STRING TRIO/BAR KOKHBA SEXTET-The Circle Maker (Tzadik 7122) The long awaited, much anticipated 2nd chamber MASADA is finally here & it is yet another gem. CD Isschar features the Masada String Trio-Mark Feldman monster violinist, Erik Friedlander cello wonder & Greg Cohen anchoring the groove on acoustic bass. Their Merkin Hall gig just last week was broadcast on WNYC and completely wowed all in attendance. Lovely ancient melodies mix modern classical depth. CD Zevulun adds Marc Ribot's superb guitars and both percussion greats Cyro Baptista & Joey Baron. Zorn achieves a perfect balance of ancient & modern melodies & ideas. Another masterwork!! $20.=2cds

2.MUSIC REVELATION ENSEMBLE-Cross Fire (DIW 927) Featuring John Zorn & Pharoah Sanders!! This unit is by far Blood Ulmer's best & most consistently great electric jazz group. Recording since 1980, this is their 7th release. MRE have always had a fine rhythm team, Cornel Rochester has been their drummer of choice for a while (recently on stage with Zorn, Ribot & Medeski), while Calvin Jones is their fine first acoustic bassist in a decade. There has always been a tradition of sax greats in this band as well: David Murray, Arthur Blythe, Sam Rivers & Hamiet Bluitt. An excellent outing, headed by Blood's slow burn swirling groove spidery guitar. Zorn is at his most Ornette like in tone, probably due to Blood's sly harmelodic tunes. Both Zorn & Pharoah are at their lyrical best, unusually warm toned, taking their time to do some well placed blasting. Although Zorn & Pharoah do not play on the same tunes, both continually interweave & explore with Blood in dense waves. All instrumental, no vocals. $18. For a Jap. import.

3.GARY LUCAS-Busy Being Born (Tzadik 7121) A very personal journey with multi guitar god-Gary Lucas, through varied Jewish landscapes, landmarks, prayers, jokes, & tributes. Tunes I remember fondly from my Hebrew school days, eerie anti-lullabies, a Groucho Marx cover, a medley of Fleischer Bros. cartoon music, & a hilarious accapella "Adon Alom"!?! His versions of "Sunrise Sunset" & "Exodus" are tender & lovely jewels. You'll die laughing to the great Zappa like wackiness of "Abie the Fishman ". Much heart, soul & spirit went into this cd. $14.

4.ROBERT DICK/SOLDIER STRING QUARTET-Jazz Standards on Mars (enja 9327) An outstanding collection of rarely (ever?) done covers by Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman, Jimi Hendrix & one nifty original. Dave Soldier provides great adventurous arrangements to this unique cast, both superb rhythm teams constantly push. Both Robert Dick's flutes & Regina Carter's violin continually pull off remarkable solos!! Mark Dresser & Kermit Driscoll play great basses together on half the tracks, while newcomer (to me) electric bassist Richard Bona is also superb throughout the other tracks. Bravo, Robert! $14.
5.BUN-CHING LAM-The Child God (Tzadik 7031) Second wonderful cd by this Chinese contemporary classical composer, who brings together an odd mix of east meets downtown instruments and players: Michael Lowenstern on bass clarinet, Wu Man on pipa (from Sola & Threadgill projects), Michelle Kinney on cello, Danny Tunick on percussion & Chen Tao on di/xun. Narrator Ron Sopyla speaks in English & has a calm cool voice like John Cage. This is a Chinese mini-opera & takes us on an exotic journey & tells us a rich story. Tenor vocal Chen Shi-Zheng is the real star here, a strong voice & presence. An ancient to modern drama. $14.

6.EVAN PARKER ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC ENSEMBLE-Toward the Margins (ECM 1612 imp) Why did it take six months to finally get a hold of copies of this ECM import only release, touted by The Wire as one of '97's best!?! Why mess with the greatest of the Euro-free jazz trios-Evan Parker-Barry Guy & Paul Lytton ?!? Why three sound manipulators, one for each member of the trio? And why ECM?? Good questions. More importantly, this release is both brilliant & challenging. Both the astounding playing of the trio, with the ultra selective electronic manipulations, often create a cosmic swirling mass. Alien worlds unfold, arco bass heaven & hell, bizarre melting sounds in the distance. Their live set at Victo was too dense, but this cd is just right. The production is especially warm for sounds so weird. Truly amazing! $16. for import cd.

7.MATERIAL-The Road to the Western Lands (Triloka 558-021) No, not a new Material cd, silly. This is merely 7 more versions of Material's "The Western Lands" track from their recently reissued 'Seven Souls' cd, which featured the spoken word voice of the late William S. Burroughs Besides three versions by Mr. Laswell, featuring the cutsey voice of Alicia Renee, we get more engaging versions by DJ Olive & Soul Slinger, Talvin Singh & Spring Heel Jack. SHJ's radical skeletal remix works the best with Bill's bass slowly panning around the world. Interesting, but probably not essential. Sony just moved that Miles/Laswell remix back again, this time not until April 21st. $14.

8.IVA BITTOVA-s/t (Nonesuch 79455) Finally! A domestic release by Czech vocalist/violinist angel and Fred Frith cohort. Although this is a compilation older solos from rare Euro only cd's, it is nice to have an affordable release by Iva to turn the rest of the world onto. Here's hoping that Nonesuch helps Iva get the attention she's always deserved. Some of you might recall Iva's appearance in the Frith documentary "Steps Across the Border". This is mostly a solo voice-violin-viola effort, recorded partially in a warm resonant church. Enchanting lullabies for the children in all of us!! $14.

9.MARIA McAULIFFE-ark sextet (Koch Jazz 7859) Although a relative newcomer to the downtown scene, she's a fine composer & pianist. This is her first release, as a leader of a strong sextet, featuring Rich Perry on saxes, Rob Henke on trumpet (Dr. Nerve), Chris Washburne on trombone, Dave Hofstra on bass (Microscopics, the President) & Kevin Norton on drums (Braxton & a leader, too). Maria's writing is strong, reminds me of some of the better west coast stuff. In the tradition of Gil Evans, George Russell, Carla Bley & Lee Konitz. Maria arranged a special version of "I Say a Little Prayer" for Zorn's Bacharach tribute cd. Mr. Zorn was so impressed, he asked her to do a complete Bacharach cd for her ensemble. It should be out some time soon, probably on Tzadik. $14..

10.ARTO LINDSAY-Noon Chill (Bar None 102) Third mesmerizing, subtle, lovely, mysterious & superb release from Arto (DNA, Ambitious Lovers) Lindsay. The luscious production, unique use of layered samples, hypnotic percussion grooves & Arto's odd yet poetic lyrics make this another fine laid back winner. "You are simply beyond why," he intones. Arto even throws a bit of skronk guitar for seasoning. Guests include Melvin Gibbs, Peter Scherer, Nana, Sakamoto, Marty Ehrlich & Vincent Chancey. $14.

11.JOE MANERI-Paniots Nine (Avant 067) The legendary long lost quartet recordings from 1963 finally see/hear the light of day!! Maneri is a true American original & innovator as a player on clarinet & tenor sax, as well as a unique composer of early microtonal/jazz/classical/klezmer. At 70 years of age, Maneri is finally getting some of the recognition he has long deserved. His recent gigs at the Knit & Context with his son Mat & Joe Morris have been very special. Although the music on this cd is not of the best recording quality, the music is a revelation. It is an odd mix of free jazz, odd meters, 12 tone classical ideas & both Jewish & Greek melodies. Fascinating & wonderful! Great liner notes by Harvey Pekar. $18.

12.EYVIND KANG/KATO HIDEKI/CALVIN WESTON-Dying Ground (Avant 076) Violinist-Eyvind seems to have 2 completely different sides. His playing with the current Bill Frisell qt. is quite lovely & restrained. However, he also has a darker, scarier side of violin noise making! His first cd on Tzadik, his second on RGI, as well as his often startling improv with the Sun City Girls & Joe McPhee, shows his dark more twisted side. This offering is his often brutal power trio with bass god-Kato Hideki (Death Ambient, Ground Zero) and monster drummer Calvin Weston (Ornette & Blood Ulmer). Live, powerful, relentless, and pushed to the extremes, this is about as intense as it gets. Watch out! $18.

13.JAMES BLOOD ULMER/ODYSSEY-Reunion (KFW 220) Looks like Blood is on a roll! This is yet another (see MRE above) strong effort from harmelodic guitar giant & gruff/soulful vocalist. This trio last recorded an lp for Columbia some 15 years ago, a distinctive trio with violinist Charlie Burham, drummer Warren Benbrow & no bassist. Both Blood & Charlie spin their cosmic blues/gospel/funk/jazz solos all over, while Warren's groove always keeps it all together. Blood's voice is on half these tunes & has never sounded better or more convincing. "I Believe in You" claims Blood, & we believe in him, too! $13.

14.(HAMIET) BLUITT BARITONE SAX GROUP-Live at the Knitting Factory (KFW 217) Wow! A massive quartet of bari sax greats with Ronnie Burrage on drums. Like Hamiet's main group-the World Sax Quartet, this combines 4 amazing saxists: James Carter, Patience Higgins, Alex Carter & Hamiet himself, to do some outstanding blasting, bluesy, funky, buggin' riffs, burning down the house with slamming solos & blistering baritones!! Excellent charts by Frank Lacy, EJ Allen, Sam Rivers, and band members-Carter, Harding & four by Hamiet. Excellent production in the live setting at the Knit. $13.

15.HANS REICHEL & EROC-The Return of Onkel Boskopp (Repertoire 4688) DMG has finally hooked up with this groovy German prog & reissue label, at US prices! A list of these recent prog acquisitions will follow in the next supplement. It is so good to get some new music from Hans Reichel-superb & totally unique guitarist, daxophone maker/player & old cohort of Fred Frith. This is an amazing & bizarre duo effort with Eroc-drummer from the legendary German 70's progrock unit Grobschnitt. This cd was recorded over 14 years & is a journey through an odd mix of styles & sounds. Unlike most of Hans' FMP recordings, there is very little improv going on. The magic comes through Hans' layers of oft melodic guitar parts & daxophone as a chorus of voices. Everything is found in the mix-Euro soundtrack & circus music, lounge-like goofiness, layers of unidentified sounds, oddly charming! $15. for import

16.DUB SYNDICATE-Fear of a Green Planet (Shanachie 45038) Featuring Bill Laswell on phat dub bass, Style Scott on drums/ production & Skip McDonald from Tackhead on lead guitar. Adrian Sherwood mixes only, so this is not as overly spaced out as the usual On U type of dub. It is just as psychedelic & filled with layers cosmic echoland instrumentals. There is also some great Indian violin & chorus vocals buzzing around in the mix as well. The 'Green Planet" of the title is one thick with ganja leaves, mon. Dub Syndicate will be at the Knit some time soon, so I'll see ya there. $14.

17.LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS-A Possible Dawn (Hat Noir 801) At 61+ minutes, this Loren's longest effort yet. The first half is made from mostly rare/out-of-print/limited singles, the second half is a triumphant 33 minute trio piece with guitar cohorts Thurston Moore & French FMP guitarist Jean-Marc Montera. Loren's sound continues to evolve at its snail like pace, dark, mutant, buzzing, howling, moaning, groaning, hovering, distant, feedback drenched, troubled spirits wandering through the urban landscapes. This music fits my depressed mood better than anything else I could imagine. The trio piece is a mass/mess of tortured guitars, with Loren's blues drenched lead crying for mercy at the center. $17.

18.PHEEROAN AKLAFF-Global Mantras (Wink Music 001) Featuring Oliver Lake, Jerome Harris, Baikaida Carroll, Mike Cain, Josh Roseman & Ed Cherry. This is a perfect, beautiful, jazz/world music offering from one our greatest drummers & composers. Pheeroan is an old palomine, who first cd -"Sonogram", came out on Bob Musso's MuWorks label in '89 (where I helped out) & was equally amazing, generally overlooked & featured Sonny Sharrock (we still have a few left for $10.). Pheeroan can do it all-swinging his ass off or playing free. Incredibly warm writing & playing by this well chosen cast of fine musicians. Pheeroan has a special way playing behind each soloist that pushes them to their best. An excellent self-produced release that should be reckoned with, so help spread the word!! $14.

    19. MARC DUCRET-un certain malaise (Screwgun 70005) Solo electric guitar monster & holy shit, can this dude play!?! Marc is the guitarist from Tim Berne's Bloodcount's three live in Paris cd's & also has 3 superb releases out on Label Bleu. Unbelievable technique & technical prowess, an electric jazz guitarist who can do it all. Even when tapping on the strings or just making noise, everything is totally focused & continually telling stories. Marc's fingers buzz all over the guitar, constantly shifting daredevil ideas both quiet & equally intense, spinning brilliant webs. Wacky cover art drawing of a woman in underclothes bending over & being slapped by a robot hand. Marc should have a solo acoustic guitar cd out on Winter & Winter soon and a trio improv with Tim Berne & Herb Robertson out on Screwgun in the future. $14.

20.OPEN LOOSE [MARK HELIAS/ELLERY ESKELIN/TOM RAINEY]-Come Ahead Back (enja 7861) Mark's solo acoustic bass gig here at DMG last month was superb-amazing ideas & technique. This trio cd is also superb, half improv, half composed, a solid excursion. All three players are equally adept at moving freely or digging into the groove. Ellery especially seems to get off putting himself new instrumental situations with each project. Tom Rainey also spreads his magic like he does in Tim Berne's Paraphrase trio. But, it is Mark Helias who really holds it all together, his bass throbbing like a cosmic heartbeat. $14.

21.ASSIF TSAHAR TRIO-"Ein Sof/Infinity" (Silkheart 148) Featuring William Parker & Assif's partner- Susie Ibarra. This is Israeli born tenor sax player Assif's third release & once again, this is free jazz at its new height! I have just witnessed these three giants along with Cooper Moore & Rob Brown in William Parker's In Order to Survive the other night at Context, and it was an explosion of sound! They are about to play the FMP fest in Germany, so be on the lookout, they will knock you all out!! This is a perfect trio, they breathe & burn as one force of nature, each player pushing the energy to new levels! Volcanic! $14.

A supplement of new acquisitions from Voiceprint, Repetoire & Intakt will be on its way soon.

Take care & love from Bruce at DMG.

So I'll offer some rhymes full of beauty and grace
(in a really huge font size to take up some space).
This writer's block emptiness partially due
To a dearth of releases for me to review
(this part in parentheses I guess I will own
as the part where I'll bitch or the space where I'll moan
regarding the lack of new product of worth;
aren't there any good bands left on the Earth?)
anyway, back to the poem at hand...
I'm thankful you like me, though I can't understand
why you've given such praises to my little column
it moves me so deeply that this oath is solemn;
I do hereby promise to give you my best

A PRAYER FOR
THE FALLEN HEROES OF THE DOWNTOWN SCENE:

Last Thursday, TOM CORA, cellist extraordinaire & early member of Zorn/Frith/Chadbourne scene, passed away. I am devastated once more. He was 44 & living in southern France with his wife Catherine Jauniaux, a superb vocalist & a young son-Elia. I recall a solo cello gig in the early 80's that totally blew me away, Tom banged, scraped, twisted & did things to the cello, coaxing sounds never heard before. He continually knocked me out, always inspired & amazing-through bands like Curlew, Skeleton Crew with Fred Frith & Zeena Parkins, Third Person, The EX & his own unit the Roof (US & Euro versions). You can hear him on early Zorn game pieces & improvising with Hans Reichel, David Moss, George Cartwright, Michael Lytle... An incredibly nice guy, a very special spirit, we all will mourn his loss.

Another special spirit & unique drummer-Dennis Charles passed on March 26th. A most positive force on the lower east scene for decades, he came to NYC from the Virgin Islands in 1945. He played & recorded with Cecil Taylor in the 50's, helping to invent free jazz. He often reminded me of the magical playing of Ed Blackwell & seemed to have played, rehearsed & recorded with dozens downtown's finest-Wayne Horvitz, Elliott Sharp, Billy Bang, Jemeel Moondoc, Wilber Morris, Mike Marcus, Haze Greenfield. He only recorded two cd's under his own name-"Queen Mary" on Silkhart from '89 & "Captain of the Deep" on Eremite was released on the day he died. His recent duos with percussionist Susie Ibarra were especially wonderful! He always had a smile on his face. He too, will be missed.
