| Whoa!! A very special mazel-tov to the
KNITTING FACTORY, my fave music hang, for hitting their 10th year
anniversary & celebrating with an all star line-up for February! There
has been amazing sets so far by the TRONZO TRIO, MATT SHIPP TRIO, WILLIAM
PARKER'S IN ORDER TO SURVIVE, the KLEZMATICS, WISDOM TOOTH & 3/5's
of NAKED CITY!! On the 6th, it was the return of FRED FRITH
for 2 sets of cosmic solo guitars, some new de- vices & exquisite acoustic
pluckings. Fred is finally married with 2 kids and now living in Germany,
hence his NY gigs are rare treats. On the same bill was the equally amazing
WAYNE HORVITZ-BRIGGAN KRAUSS duo, both from Wayne's last unit-Pigpen,
now no longer. Fred & Wayne played a nice duo for the encore of the
first set & also brought out Briggan for the 2nd set encore. No doubt
that the gig of the week was the JOHN ZORN-FRED FRITH duo on the
9th! This was originally supposed to be a Painkiller show, but this didn't
happen due scheduling problems. Fans of the extreme don't fret, Painkiller
will return. ZORN/FRITH pulled off two sets of intense and spirited
improv. This is as good as it gets!!
Speaking of my main man-JZ, his US label
Tzadik will be releasing another 9 cd's on March 18th, as well as the first
4 Avant releases dis- tributed through Koch. Both of these labels continue
to blow minds...
Superb drummer/composer/bandleader BOBBY PREVITE is also starting his own label-Depth of Field. His first 2 releases are tentatively coming out in June and are two duo recordings: JOHN ZORN/BOBBY PREVITE duo and SUSAN McKEOWN/LINDSAY HORNER duo. Susan is a fine Irish songstress who put out an excellent cd with her group Chanting House last year. The VICTORIAVILLE fest in Quebec
is an incredible 5 day progressive/ avant music orgy of about 25 concerts,
currently held in May, in a small town halfway between Montreal & Quebec
City. It has been happening for about 15 years, and thanks to the nudging
of Fred Frith, I have attended the last 10 or so fests. It is always an
incredible experience, almost overwhelming in its entirety. Serious listeners
& performers come from all over to take it all in. It is a ten hour
drive from NYC, and costs about $500. for everything, a festival pass costs
around $200. for all 25 sets. The full schedule should appear in the next
Cadence or Option, but inside word on the line-up so far is:
2.FRED FRITH ELECTRIC GUITAR QUARTET 3.DOCTOR NERVE 4.TORTOISE 5.GASTR DEL SOL 6.LEE RANALDO/WILLIAM HOOKER 7.FUSHITSUSHA w/Haino Keiji! 8.BORIS KOVACS 9.IRENE SCHWEIZER solo piano 10.BORAH BERGMAN solo piano New Releases New Releases New Releases

Take care, Bruce Lee Gallanter Welcome all who would dare to enter the oft-thrilling, sometimes chilling, 2nd billing, always fulfilling, even if I'm not always willing piece of literary magic known as MikesSpace. This edition is dedicated to Bruce who drops heart and soul into this store everyday and to group therapy which may someday make me nicer to you folks when you come in. I'd like to begin with my '96 TOP TEN list.

You can find her otherworldly beauty in the past 2 Sports Illustrated swimsuit editions, this month's GQ, a few recent Victoria's Secret catalogs (don't ask) and, sickeningly enough, in the arms of the completely lucky and utterly deserving of death- John Stamos. Please kill me now. The newest addition to MS is DESERT ISLAND _______ . Each edition I will list my DI______ in categories of relevance to possibly, and more than likely, only me. This, however, will be my 2nd attempt at interactivity as I am offering up this space to all of you. Please send your lists of stuff that you couldn't do without(# of items: up to ten) to us and please make the subject line "DI______". First up is Desert Island... Stuff-

disc of the month honors goes to TRIP THROUGH SOUND- Moonshine Records.
This marks a blessed return to the sound that made Moonshine one of my
favorite labels of the early 90's. This disc is a progressive, intelligent,
cutting edge journey thru some of the best hard trance sounds coming out
of Europe today. Containing unreleased material and tracks culled from
previous discs it represents the marriage of Moonshine and Blue Room Released
which IMHO is THE trance label of the late 90's. My life is almost complete...
