Now- on with the show.

Our big gig was quite a success! About 200 fine folks showed up for our 5 1/2 year anniversary party. We did no advertising except for flyers, but did get some nice picks in the Voice, NY Times and even the Daily News. All 10 sets were pretty fine as well, especially Zorn & Susie Ibarra, Loren Mazzacane & Alan Licht and Chapin/Buchanan/Levin sax trio. Special thanks to everyone who attended, played or just helped out.

Speaking of my main man-John Zorn, there are a couple of cool gigs of his coming up. It is the return of PAINKILLER on Feb. 24th at the Knit., if you've never seen them, watch out, they are totally throttling live. Mick Harris may or may not be on drums. The Zorn/Eye duo have also just been added to the Knit schedule for around that same time.

TIM BERNE is also one of my favorite saxist/composers. His current quartet BLOODCOUNT just gets better & better, their music consistantly challenging. After the demise of JMT, his last label with 5 cd's of his now in limbo, Tim has just started his own label-Screwgun. Its first re- lease "Unwound" is finally here & it is superb. A 3cd set for only $30., recorded live in Berlin & Ann Arbor. Cool cardboard packaging & artwork that included a cookie recipe. All long & complex compositions, great in your face recording. Later this year will Screwgun will release 3 more important cd's-solo efforts by Marc Ducret (an amazing french jazz guitarist & occasional member of Bloodcount), solo acoustic bass from Michael Formanek & Tim's trio Paraphrase with Drew Gress & Tom Rainey. Don't forget that Koch recently reissued 3 of Tim's out-of-print cd's- Fulton St. Mall, that 2nd CBS title & that wacky duo cd with Bill Frisell -"Theoretically". Any of those can be obtained from us for $14.

DAVE DOUGLAS, excellent trumpeter/composer & MASADA member continues to work hard recording & touring with various groups. This year will see the release of 3 new cd's by 3 different projects-The Tiny Bell Trio will have a Live in Europe release out in April on Arabesque, Dave says their hottest yet. Dave's ever evolving new unit Sanctuary, sort of like "Big Fun" era Miles, will have a double cd out on Avant in the summer. Dave recently unveiled his sextet doing the music of Wayne Shorter. There will be a cd of this material out also on Arabesque sometime in the early fall.

MATT SHIPP, pianist who also consistently blows me away, has much new and reissue product on its way. The end of January will see the reissue of Matt's duo cd with William Parker called "Zo" out on 2.13. In March it is a trio cd with Matt Maneri & William Parker entitled "By Law of the Music" on Hat Art. In April is a quartet featuring Matt & William once again with Whit Dickey on drums called "Flow of X" on 2.13.61 Later this Spring will be a solo piano release titled "Before the World" on FMP. Out piano fans please take note- Matt Shipp is the real thing! Check him out!!

ELLIOTT SHARP is as busy as ever with 3 new releases out soon. In March there will be Elliott's 2nd cd for Tzadik, a film composer series called "Figure Ground" for solo guitars, saxes & computer. Also out soon thereafter will be the 2nd cd by Boodlers with Fred Chalenor, Henry Fran- zoni (from Caveman Shoestore) and Carbon's drummer Joe Trump, entitled "Counter Fit" & released by Tim Kerr Records. Elliott himself will be putting out a limited edition cd called "Spring & Neap" on his label Zoar for an all acoustic Japanese ensemble with Zeena Parkins on acoustic harp and Michiyo Zagi on kotos. Stay tuned, we may be the only distributor...

ALAN LICHT is yet another amazing guitarist & good palomine. His band RUN ON are about my favorite rock band from NY at present. Their 2nd cd, "No Way" will be out in February on Matador, I can't wait!! Alan will have a solo guitar thang out on Corpus Hermeticus in April entitled "The Evan Dando of Noise". Be on the lookout, this cat can wail on them 6 strings!

Welcome to BlankSpace a subsidiary of MikesSpace wholly owned and operated by Mike's Brain and published all to often to cover the fact that Mike isn't always able to produce-

    a poem (part II)
Christmas long over and I'm still feelin' burnt
"get the hell out of retail" the hard lesson learnt
December is poor when it comes to new releases
(insert joke about quality ending with "feces")
missed most new movies, so I've found no new Honeys
though Beavis and Butthead was decently funny
Cartoon Planet, sadly, now only on Fridays
so Monday to Thursday are making me cry days
therapy's dealing with scars from my childhood
so when you come in please forgive me my wild mood
no newfound joys for some mind elevation
stressing out, once again, has my brain on vacation
please honor my honesty without scathing retort
because, once again, sorry, nothing new to report
hey wait, don't go, please have patience and stay
because at least I know when I have nothing to say
I could blather on like certain unnamed rock critics
but I should quit here as I'm getting acidic
sorry to disappoint those who expect me to produce
but hey, I'm not a writer, I just work for Bruce :)
Thanks and please stay tuned,

Emperor Mike
