Hola! Welcome to DMG's 5th newsletter
and the triumphant return of Mike's Brain.(see below)

Winter is a comin' on strong. There are some amazing gigs coming up! Be prepared!!!

The first 3 of 4 cd's are finally here on the all new BRAXTON House label. All are beautifully recorded with nifty black designed covers. Two superb cd's of Braxton's latest development-Ghost Trance Music-TENTET (NY) 1996 and SEXTET (Istanbul) 1995 which is a 2 cd set ($25.) The other single cd ($15.) is COMPOSITION #102 for 39 piece student orchestra. The fourth cd is SOLO (Skopje) 1995 for solo alto sax & will be out in a few weeks, stay tuned.

ZORNnews-As we type this info up, Masada could be in your town, as they tour the US for a couple of weeks. They'll be back at the Knit for 7 nites of Hanukah, December 6th-12th. Word is that they're also playing at a local synagogue with a dancer, the same nite they start their run at the Knit! In the meantime, we should be getting in 7 new Tzadik titles next Tues. the 19th, including Zorn's Filmworks V & VI, reissue of the New Klezmer Trio's 1st release, plus film score cd's by Peter Scherer & Steve Beresford. There are also 3 premieres of classical pieces by Mr. Zorn... DURAS-Zorn's 15 minute tribute to Marguerite Duras for 6 piece ensemble will be at the Knit on Wed. Nov. 27th at 8pm with the new Dim Sum Clip Job. Zorn's DARK RIVER will be performed by Dave Douglas' all star down- town unit on Sun. Dec. 29th at 8pm with pieces by Douglas, Morton Feldman and Stockhausen. The American Composers Orchestra will perform Zorn's APORIAS-REQUIA FOR PIANO & ORCHESTRA with Stephen Drury on piano on Sun. Jan. 12th, 1997 at 3pm at Carnegie Hall. On the same bill will be pieces by Roger Sessions & Steve Mackey featuring Bill Frisell on el. guitar & Joey Baron on drums. Top tix are 40 bucks.

Saw a powerful improv set at the Knit last week featuring Thurston Moore, Thomas Chapin (their 1st gig together), DJ Olive, Marc Edwards & Tom Surgal. Thurston is presenting a mini fest of improv at CB's Gallery on Fri. Dec. 6th with John Fahey headlining (his 1st gig in NYC in a long time), Thurston & Lee Ranaldo duo, Davey Williams solo, and Kim Gordon/DJ duo. Fahey just played the Table of the Elements fest in Chicago with Jim O'Rourke & Loren Mazzacane.

ROULETTE has been the most consistent loft space presenting New Music in NYC since the early 80's. I recall so many incredible gigs there through the years-Zorn, Frith, Laswell, Derek Bailey... Their fall season just ended with a number of superb gigs- Christian Marclay turntable trio with DJ Olive, Charles Noyes-San Won Park-Jim O'Rourke & Jim Staley- Ikue Mori- Davey Williams. Always challenging. Their Einstein label has released about a half dozen fine avant cd's. Sadly they will have to move at the end of their next season in Spring of '97. In the meanwhile... ROULETTE is putting together a terrific cast of musicians for a benefit festival at the Knit on Dec. 16th-18th. There will be 2 different sets per night at 8:00 & 10:30, $15. per set, $25. per night, $65. for all six sets. Dec. 16th 1st set: Zeena solo w/film, Ned Rothenberg new trio w/ Jerome Harris & tabla player, David Garland trio and Meredith Monk & 3 vocalists; The 10:30 set includes Joey Baron- solo, Christian Marclay & Shelley Hirsch, Jon Gibson Ensemble and Thurston Moore/Tamio/Jackson Krall. The 17th 1st set: Guy Klucesvek- solo, Lois Vierk, Ursula Oppens/Richard Teitlebaum/Shelley Hirsch/Mark Feldman and Spalding Gray. The 2nd set: Company style improv set organized by Jim Staley w/Zorn, Hirsch, Mori,Staley & Susie Ibarra (more players to be...) The Dec. 18th 1st set will feature: David Weinstein/Ted Spelios/the Poool, Leroy Jenkins/Oliver Lake duo, Margaret Lang Ten doing John Cage and Elliott Sharp (possibly w/ Vernon Reid). The final set is George Lewis/Anthony Davis duo, Min Xiao Fin solo pipa wonder, Bang-on-a-Can Live and the return of Yankees w/Zorn, Derek Bailey & George Lewis. Their 1st gig in 15 years!! Be there!!

For four of the five years that Downtown Music Gallery has been open, we have celebrated our anniversaries with annual improv/noise fests usually at the Knit. We didn't do one for our fifth, so I'm working on a big fest for our 5 1/2 year anniversary. Tentatively scheduled for Friday Jan. 3rd at Context Studios, participants may well include-(the return my old pal guitar/saz demon) Steve Buchanan, Bob Musso, Thomas Chapin, John Richey, Kurt Ralske, Jane Scarpantoni, Loren Mazzacane, Alan Licht, Thurston Moore & friends, Zorn & Susie Ibarra, improv units Escapade and Oatmeal Banana. Maybe the return of my unit-Suburban Bohemia. We'll see...

Bye, B.G.

Sorry for that last one there but sometimes you just have nothing to say. Sometimes you still have nothing to say but you have to produce and this is one of those times. Some people fear looking like an idiot, I don't know how else to look so I'll bravely soldier on and set the controls for the center of MIKE'S SPACE... This edition of MS is dedicated to Stacey Taylor at Nettwerk who fed my Skinny Puppy craving and to portable electric nose hair clippers because you wouldn't want to see me without one.

Welcome, I'll start with the newest additions to the HOT BABES LIST-

I'm sure I'll get flak for this but Chelsea Clinton is a BABE!!! Talk about the quintessential "Ugly Duckling". I'm just happy that the next four years will keep her in the public eye and that I'll be able to watch her continued growth into one fine woman. (our baby's all grown up [snif])

The late night, soft porn, straight-to-video/cable industry has churned out Julie Strain & Shannon Tweed who are celebrated and renowned for their "acting". Well I, Emperor Mike, do hereby nominate Shannon Whirry as the Hottest Li'l Thing on the "following movie is not rated. It contains... viewer discretion advised." circuit. I can almost guarantee that you will never catch her anywhere else except for Friday, late night cable or the "erotic thrillers" section of your local vid store but she is worth waiting up for/searching out even if her films are not. (My God, do I need a life or what?)

Lela Rochon. (I need not and will not say more)

Next up- HEAVY ROTATION LISTENING FAVES. In no particular order and disregard for age of the recording they are:

  • 1)MZ.412- In Nomine... (Swedish Black Industrial)
  • 2)Ordo Equilibrio- Reaping the Fallen (Dark Ambient/Industrial/Goth)
  • 3)Mortiis- Anden Som Oppor... (Dark Classical from the ex-bassist of Norwegian black metal kings- Emperor)
  • 4)Raison D'Etre- Prospectus 1 (Dark Industrial/Ambient with a heavy Catholic bent. Sonic guilt)
  • 5)Nefilim- Zoon (Industrial/Metal/Goth. Formerly Fields Of The Nephilim)
  • 6)Vanessa Daou- Slow To Burn (Breathy, erotic fluff, total ear candy)
  • 7)Marilyn Manson- Antichrist Superstar (I never thought I'd like this, yet here we finally have the bridge betwixt Alice Cooper and Nine Inch Nails)
As with any great artistic endeavor interpretation is up to the viewer/ listener/whateverer. When you try to combine ancient Japanese poetry styles with modern music criticism something has to give and that usually is... substance, what I mean is sometimes you can't tell my leanings for or against. An explanation is therefore in order, so...

  • 1) If it sucks beyond all understanding then I won't even review it and you get the last issue of MIKE'S SPACE as an example.
  • 2) If it has any merit at all I'll try to fit that fact in the review itself and hope it comes across as such.
  • 3) As an added bonus I will now include my favorite of all review extras- the "Recommended If You Like" blurb with certain reviews. ("certain" because some reviews will mention bands in the body and others I just have no paradigm by which to judge)
So, without further interruption I present: HAIKU REVIEW- 17 syllables that say "I love you" or "This Sucks" or...

TV Tip- Sunday nights on Showtime at 11:30 can be found the best adult sitcom since Soap AND it's on cable so the boundaries are pushed even further. I'm speaking of Sherman Oaks. Now, this show contains way too much dysfunction to fully describe so once again I'll just recommend that you see it for yourself. No belly laughs here a la 2 Stupid Dogs or Cartoon Planet (how many standard bearers can there really be?) but a smile and subtle amusement for a full half hour is more than you'll probably get for the whole rest of the week, so stay up. You might be more pleasant on Monday morning for it.

Tattoo Tip- Check out Mari at ALMOST Tattoos 33 St. Marks Pl., NYC. She's good and thorough and takes her time to do it right. The prices are reasonable and their custom work is excellent. Should your personal jones for pain not be satisfied after a couple of hours under the needle Andromeda Piercing is right next door. Say "HI" to La Raine for me when you're there.

That's all I have for now and my blood sugar is bottoming out as we speak so I'd better go and suck down a 32 oz. Coke or something bef o r e I p a s s o u ...

Emperor Mike in 2000- Because America doesn't need governing it needs RULING!!!!
