ROBERT FRIPP And THE ORCHESTRA OF CRAFTY GUITARISTS VII
Sunday May 26th at 3 PM
@ Saint Marks Church in-the-Bowery
131 East 10th Street on 2nd Avenue
Robert Fripp, guitarist, composer, and founder of Guitar Craft, The League of Crafty Guitarists, and the Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists, will be bring the OCG to NYC on╩Sunday, May 26, at St. Marks Church in-the-Bowery. Fripp, who co-founded╩King Crimson╩and has collaborated with╩David Bowie,╩Brian Eno,╩Peter Gabriel,╩David Byrne, Theo Travis et al, has devoted much of the last three decades to the Guitar Craft and Guitar Circles instructional program. The╩Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists╩is the latest╩manifestation of that work.
The╩Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists, which has previously performed in Spain, Italy, Argentina and Seattle, embodies an exciting new approach to group playing, drawing on╩the work of Guitar Craft and the Guitar Circles it has spawned. Up to 100 acoustic guitarists from different backgrounds, different countries, and all levels of playing ability╩and experience meet for a period of intensive, cloistered preparation. Out of a combination of concentrated work and the joy of creation and improvisation, coalesces a╩concert experience unlike any other. Each performance is unique, as the Orchestra responds to the particular combination of players, audience and venue in a new way╩each night.╩
"What is The ORCHESTRA Of Crafty Guitarists?
One possible answer: a lot of people making a lot of noise with guitars. Sometimes they even perform in public; as in Sant Cugat, Seattle, Sassoferrato, Funes and Farnese.
Another possible answer is a specialized study in the self-organizing properties of complex wholes. How does Intelligence act in and through many individuals, coming together as one? What if a high level of Conscious or Creative Intelligence needed to enter this world, what kind of body or vehicle would it need?
The global challenges we face, to be addressed by current and following generations, are beyond the capacity of individuals to meet. Solutions are more likely to be found in groups and networks than in the efforts of individuals acting alone.
The quality of solution required, to problems now of global proportion, is creative; that is, at the level of genius. The solitary, individual genius is, by definition, solitary and individual. The question, then, is how may we cultivate and develop group genius?
Come share in the spectacle that is the Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists!"

ROSS HAMMOND QUARTET With VINNY GOLIA/STEUART LIEBIG/ALEX CLINE - Cathedrals (Prescott 20; USA) New for 2013. 2nd album with the lineup of Ross Hammond on guitar & compositions, Vinny Golia on tenor, alto & soprano saxes, Steuart Liebig on electric bass and Alex Cline on drums
and, still available..
ROSS HAMMOND QUARTET With VINNY GOLIA/STEUART LIEBIG/ALEX CLINE + WAYNE PEET - Adored (Prescott; USA) Featuring Ross Hammond on guitar & compositions, Vinny Golia on tenor, alto & soprano saxes, Steuart Liebig on electric bass and Alex Cline on drums with guest Wayne Peet on piano for 1 track. Last month (January of 2012), a guitarist named Ross Hammond asked if could play here at DMG with Vinny Golia. I said of course since I am a big fan & friend of Mr. Golia, one of the most gifted and consistently creative multi-reeds giants on the West Coast. I had never heard of (Sacramento-based) Mr. Hammond before this but he has now sent us his new quartet disc which is an unexpected delight. It turns out that Mr. Hammond has a duo with drum wiz Scott Amendola called the Lovely Builders. No doubt many of you are well aware of the rhythm team Steuart Liebig & Alex Cline) who can be found on dozens of discs on the Nine Winds, Cadence and Cryptogramophone labels.
I was very surprised by this disc since I have usually considered Vinny Golia specaifically as a great jazz player. This disc however is much closer to rock or jazz/rock than ost things I've heard from Mr. Golia & his usual crew. Beginning with the title track, we are off and soaring through some powerful, spiritual jazz/rock. Both Ross on guitar and Vinny on tenor sax are wailing tightly together with an equally tight and powerful rhythm team. This sounds more like a grand conclusion than the beginning of this disc. Mr. Hammond has a clear tone with little distortion and articulates each note with well-weathered precision. For "Sesquipedalian", the quartet slows down a bit yet maintains their interplay. There seems to be some amazing telepathic interaction between the guitar and the sax, ideas and licks flowing back and forth effortlessly. Hammond has also selected the perfect rhythm section for this date with the great Steuart Liebig on six-string electric bass and the equally amazing Alex Cline on drums. Sometimes the quartet lays back and plays quietly yet they remain inventive and inspired throughout. On "She's My Little Girl" Ross plays some superb, elegant and dream-like guitar which inspires Mr. Golia to play some of the loveliest soprano sax I've heard from the guy. Each piece features another memorable melody line as a jumping off point the quartet to launch off into. Ross Hammond is no doubt the best unknown electric guitarist I've heard in many years and this disc is proof of his ambitious abilities. That's the first piece of good news. The second note of good news is that Mr. Hammond & Vinny Golia will playing here at DMG with another master bassist Adam Lane on Sunday, March 25th at 6pm. You know where you should be that night if you know what's good for you! - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
ROSS HAMMOND - Ambience, Antiquite & Other Love Songs: Solo Guitar (Prescott; USA) In the past few years I've found myself doing more and more solo gigs and have wanted a record that would represent that music. The idea for this record was spearheaded after a solo concert at Antiquite Maison Privee in Sacramento in November of 2010. That set was recorded live to a 4 track reel-to-reel by Bryce Gonzales and is featured here.
The other songs are a mix of electric and acoustic guitars, mbira, lap steel, bass guitar, drum machines and electronics. More importantly is that while the songs are instrumental, they are all themes to significant pieces of my life. All of the music presented here is like a time capsule in the same way a photograph or journal would be. This collection of music is intended to set moods, tell stories and provide an audio landscape for the joys, losses, humor and romances that life brings. Thanks very much for listening. - RH
Few guitarists can entertain with just a solo electric guitar. There are various New Age disciples, then of course there's jazz purists, avant garde players and then there's Ross Hammond, who returns with sonic vengeance on his 2011 CD release of Ambience, Antiquite And Other Love Songs. Sonic instrumental guitar extrapolations that owes more to Daniel Lanois than say David Gilmour or Hendrix per se, Ross Hammond's superbly recorded and expertly mastered CD hangs together with a unique kind of free falling fretboard tenacity. Acknowledging the efficacy of a variety of music pioneered back in the '70s by prog guitarists - from Howe to Hackett and Gilmour, from Frith to Fripp to Rother - it's all in play in Ross Hammond's spatial guitar universe. That Rother opposed to Fripp side of Hammond's guitar style is quite entertaining - especially on the first half of the CD, featuring a spatial jangle of abstract and reverbed instrumental guitar - but as the CD progresses it gets heavily involved in the more Fripp-ian side of the musical coin and so it goes. With the CD release of Ambience, Antiquite And Other Love Songs, the two or more sides of Ross Hammond reveals the inner mechanisms of a veritable guitar universe.
"Sacramento-based guitarist Ross Hammond has obviously worked hard at developing his impressive variety of sounds and approached to the electric & acoustic guitar. This is a solo offering in which every piece explores a variety of techniques, textures and devices. On "Weatherstone" Ross has a fine Fripp-like tone while adding a series echoed riffs on top, a trick that surf guitarists and Marc Ribot often utilize. On "Everything is New" Ross loops a hypnotic phrase while playing a slow, sensuous solo on top with the occasional punctuation of his daughter's cry as sublime sonic seasoning. Each of the ten songs here create a different mood and/or show how Ross has selected various layers and turned them into an impressive array of inter-connected ideas or finished works. This is a most unassuming collection of pieces which are ultimately quite magical." - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
COLIN STETSON - New History Of Warfare Vol 3: To See More Light (Constellation 092; Canada) "Colin Stetson established himself as an intensely original solo composer and performer in 2011 with the release of the widely acclaimed New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges, which ended up on countless year-end lists. Anyone who has seen Stetson in solo performance can attest to the stunning physicality of his circular-breathing technique and capacity to produce a seemingly impossible palate of multiple voicings simultaneously in real time. New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light is the final installment in a trilogy of solo albums, again recorded live in single takes and again mixed by groundbreaking producer Ben Frost. Colin's membership in Bon Iver has also led to vocal contributions from Justin Vernon for this record, who appears on four songs, and whose voice constitutes the only overdubbing on the album. New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light is the most cohesive and fully realized of Stetson's solo albums to date. It should reliably stand as the apotheosis of the New History Warfare trilogy, and certainly signals the full flourishing of Stetson's unique talents as both composer and performer, pressing his arsenal of virtuosic techniques into the service of vivid, impassioned and conceptually astute songcraft."

WEASEL WALTER QUARTET + HENRY KAISER/ARAM SHELTON - Revolt Music (ugExplode 20; USA) Featuring Weasel Walter on drums, John Gruntfest & Aram Shelton on alto saxes, Josh Allen on tenor sax, Damon Smith on 6-string & amplified contrabass, Randy Hunt on bass and Henry Kaiser on guitar. Formerly Chicago-based drum wiz, Weasel Walter, has been running the great Flying Luttenbachers since 1992, with more than a dozen discs to their name. The Luttenbachers blend free/jazz insanity with punk/rock intensity. Weasel moved to Oakland in 2003 and has become involved with a number of the Bay Area's best and most far out players. Contrabass great Damon Smith runs the consistently strong Balance Point Acoustics label, which brings together Bay Area greats with their European brethren. John Gruntfest is one of the best Bay Area saxists and can be heard on an early Henry Kaiser record, as well as playing for the Eddie Gale Now Band.
'Revolt Music' blasts open with a rich, cathartic explosion howling reeds, bowed bass and full throttle drumming, This disc is a torrent of screaming sax(es), bowed bass eruptions and some of the most focused and over-the-top drums ever. It is all too much and just enough for brave souls who love these types of free/jazz insanity. A symphony of cacophony, ready to kick your butt inside out! Weasel's massive drums are at the center of the cyclone, pushing everyone higher and higher. Although the mighty John Gruntfest is only on two tracks, there is someone named Josh Allen playing some immense free tenor sax on four cuts who is most impressive. There is an amazing five-minute drums solo about halfway through this disc that must be heard to be believed, it is a short tour-de-force. Although our man Henry Kaiser is on only one track here, it is one of the highlights as it both over-the-top and quite focused. Kaiser matches Weasel's explosive drumming with some immense shredding noise. This is without a doubt the most extreme free/jazz excursion we've heard in a long while. It is only for the brave of heart. - BLG

GEORG GRAEWE [GRAWE]/EVAN PARKER - Dortmund Variations: Live At The Domicil, Dortmund 2010 (Nuscope 1026; USA) A new duo recording with the great saxophonist Evan Parker and pianist Georg Graewe live from the Domicil in Dortmund, Germany on October 29, 2010. According to liner notes writer Bill Shoemaker, "Evan Parker is twelve years older than Georg Graewe. However, there's a countervailing metric, albeit a fanciful one, which places the saxophonist and the pianist in closer historical proximity. It is the FMP catalog. The Berlin-based label had issued 31 albums over seven years prior to New Movements, the then 20 year-old pianist's debut, in 1976; Parker played on seven of them, including Peter Brotzmann's Machine Gun and three Globe Unity Orchestra recordings. Graewe led a new "generation" of improvising musicians into a history-shaping catalog, one comprised of the core documents of first generation European improvisers like Brotzmann and Alexander von Schlippenbach." This is the second recording by the duo - their first was Unity Variations on the Okka Disk label in 1998.
The recording is very different than that of many in the nuscope catalog. First, there are only 3 pieces (4 pieces on the upcoming download on HD Tracks), the longest of which clocks in at just over 37 minutes! However, the improvisations are always exciting and never pedantic or sprawling. This is thrilling live music, and is a great contrast to Parker's recent duo recordings with pianists Uwe Oberg, Misha Mengelberg, and Matthew Shipp. Parker focuses on tenor here and Graewe plays a beautiful Bosendorfer Model 225 grand piano.
LISA ULLEN - Catachresis: The Art Of Solo Piano (Nuscope 1025; USA) Swedish pianist Lisa Ullen's first solo piano disc, titled 'Catachresis', was beautifully recorded on a new Fazioli grand piano. I hadn't heard of Swedish pianist, Lisa Ullen, before this but I eagerly awaited checking it out. Extraordinary is all I can say as I dive in to her unique approach. Ms. Ullen does have a few previous discs as a leader with her own quartet, a trio and a 2 disc set with a bassist named Nina de Heney.
Ms. Ullen prepares the piano in her own way coaxing a variety of unique sounds, creating new sounds and textures along the way. Each of the thirteen pieces explore a different approach or terrain. Each piece is fascinating for different reasons, some abrupt, some intense and some twisted into odd shapes. "Low Voice I" is dark and ominous and deals with those sounds from the low end of the piano. I caught Spanish pianist Agusti Fernandez the other night playing a duo with Joe Morris at The Stone and Agusti just dealt with sounds inside the piano for part of his set, using block of wood to create weird sounds. Ms. Ullen also works hard to create bizarre sounds inside the piano, taking her time to craft strange sounds, one or two at a time, each one selectively chosen. Each piece is like entering a new world to explore and evoke different spirits. Like all of the other treasures on Nuscope, it will take some time to further absorb everything found within. - Bruce Lee Gallanter, Downtown Music Gallery
THE HAXAN CLOAK [BOBBY KRLIC] - The Excavation (Triangle 18; USA) "In 2011 with the release of his debut, self titled album, The Haxan Cloak (solo project of multi instrumentalist Bobby Krlic) appeared seemingly out of nowhere with an impressively fully formed sound that blew away most anyone who heard it. Recorded over the space of three years The Haxan Cloak was a wildly ambitious fusion of malevolent strings, junkyard found-sounds and primitive percussion. In the two years since the release of his debut, Krlic relocated to London and began working on its epic follow up, and Tri Angle Records debut, Excavation. Bolstered by the concept he was developing for his follow up and a desire to challenge himself into new terrains, Krlic has evolved his sound to incorporate more of his electronic influences. The result is an album awash with serrated beats and cavernous sub-bass, meshing with the classical drones and ghostly details The Haxan Cloak fans will have already been accustomed to. Whereas The Haxan Cloak was a dense, and at times, suffocating listen, Excavation finds Krlic confidently adopting a more minimalist approach, experimenting with space and silence without forsaking any of the intensity that made his debut such a powerful statement of intent."
GUNTER SCHICKERT - Samtvogel (Important 380; USA) "Gunter Schickert is a German musician born 25th April 1949. He learned to play trumpet in 1962, but taught himself guitar in 1967 and made that his main instrument. In 1971 he started playing free jazz, then in 1973 made his first solo echo-guitar sessions. In 1976 he formed the group GAM with Axel Struk and Michael Leske. There are records that come from the soul. No matter how primitive may be the recording techniques the musician has access to, the soul gets its way to the heart and mind of the listener. Samtvogel is one of those records. Gunter Schickert recorded that amazing piece of human greatness in 1974, using the media he had at the time, putting his brain at work to find the best way of taping everything he had to say. 'When I was recording Samtvogel in 1974 I had only two tape recorders. I played one track and while listening I added the second one. And so on. Four times. When I mixed all together I borrowed a third tape recorder. And still added the last track to the master. I had a small mixer with two stereo and one mono but it was possible to pan tracks. No equalization. It all came out of my still living G2000 Dynacord guitar amplifier, of course valve, with no master, even the voice recorded through it. If I made a mistake in 1 track I had to repeat it from the beginning. And if while mixing I was not fast enough in changing the tape I had to start again. So it took me more than 3 months to get ready.' Thanks to these three months of work, between June and September of 1974, Samtvogel was privately issued that same year. It would later be issued on the Brain label, with a small change in the artwork -- titles added to the front cover, which weren't on the original private pressing. Brain also reissued it on the label's Rock on Brain LP series, this time with a completely different sleeve. The album contained two tracks on side one and just one on side two, and its sound has often been compared to the most explorative works of Syd Barret -- however it must be pointed out that Schickert did not need any mind spreading substances to allow his sounds to float out of his mind and soul, they just came out in the most natural way. It will also appeal to fans of the echoed atmospheric guitar work of other krautrock innovators such as Ash Ra Temple, Manuel Gottsching or A.R. & The Machines, and some may find on the vocal passages certain resemblances to Damo Suzuki on Can's Tago Mago era."
and, still available..
GUNTER SCHICKERT - Uberfallig (Bureau B 96; Germany) Gunter Schickert's album Uberfallig, originally released in 1979 on Sky Records. "No sooner had electronic music broken through in Germany, principally aligned in the two schools of Dusseldorf and Berlin, than Gunter Schickert also began his first musical experiments. Although GAM, the group he founded in 1973, did not then release a record, he did issue his first solo effort, Samtvogel, a year later -- an album which was eagerly snapped up and re-released by the Brain label. It would take five years for Sky Records to release his next LP, entitled Uberfallig (trans. "Overdue"), which proved to be the last for a number of years. This album, as its German title suggests, was long overdue. Gunter Schickert had developed his own unique, forward-looking type of music, assuming an exceptional position in the concert of German electronics. In spite of the clearly discernible influence of music from the so-called Berlin school (Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel etc.), Schickert is anything but a copycat. Schickert concentrated on pursuing his own ideas and pushing the boundaries of his remarkable aural creations. He is at pains to emphasize that, unlike almost all of his contemporaries, he did not use any synthesizers; his instruments are the electric guitar, his own studio with a multi-track tape machine and a comfortable arsenal of effects. Similar experiments had also been attempted by Manuel Gottsching (Inventions For Electric Guitar) and Achim Reichel (A.R. & Machines: Die Grune Reise), but without stretching the multifaceted nature of their music to the point of microtonality, as Schickert dared to do on Uberfallig. His own take on minimalism places him closer to the likes of Steve Reich and Glen Branca, free from the reach of Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. Schickert's use of concrete sounds and his completely autonomous way of working in his own studio presaged a stage of development more readily associated with the early 1980s. In 1979, the album was a statement of a virtuosic outsider, a guitarist and sound sculptor whose musical visions transgressed the level of expectation of a potential audience, detached from the electronic mainstream. Gunter Schickert was one of the protagonists who furthered the development of experimental pop music from the outer margins. The reissue of Uberfallig was, in a word, overdue." --Asmus Tietchens; Liner notes by Asmus Tietchens.
KLAUS SCHULZE & GUNTER SCHICKERT - The Schulze-Schickert Session (Mirumir 100704; Italy) CD edition with two bonus cuts. "For the first time, from the vaults of electronic music guru, Klaus Schulze, comes The Schulze-Schickert Session, a rare and previously unreleased private session featuring echo-guitar pioneer Gunter Schickert. Recorded on 26 September 1975 in Klaus Schulze's home studio in Hambuehren, Germany, Schulze can be heard playing an EMS Synthi A, as well as keyboards, and a Syntanorma, while Schickert plays a 12-string Framus with metal strings and also sings on a few tracks. Although Schickert's name is little-known outside of a very select circle of krautrock fans, he was a key member of the Berlin free jazz scene of the 1960s and a pioneer of the echo-guitar. Just prior to the recording of this informal session, Schickert's first LP, Samtvogel, was released on the seminal Brain label. On the two bonus tracks, found only on theCD version, Schickert's playing ebbs, as Schulze takes on the more dominant role."
A K KLOSOWSKI & PYROLATOR - Home Taping Is Killing Music (Bureau B 128; Germany) Home Taping Is Killing Music is the first and only LP by Pyrolator (Ata Tak label operative and member of Der Plan) and tape loop tinkerer Arnd Kai Klosowski. The result: whimsical, raw sound experiments from the early days of sampling technology. Originally released in 1985 on Ata Tak/WR 30. It was in the mid-1980s when the unsuccessful blues guitarist Arnd Kai Klosowski realized that the DJ was the star of the show in the discotheque: not the music and not the musicians. He then asked himself: "What if it were possible to create something new, a mix of recorded and live music which could be switched on and off intermittently?" Klosowski built himself a mixing desk with eight inputs, plugged-in microphones, called up a few people and they improvised their hearts out. "I don't know what they played, exactly. But I do know that it simply didn't work," Klosowski recollects. And then he remembered the tape loop experiments he had worked on as a teenager. So he got back to inventing, tinkering, and soldering. The first recordings made with this new, homemade tape loop device found their way to ZickZack label boss Alfred Hilsberg, who decided to release an album. All he needed was a producer. At this point, Pyrolator finally enters the scene, a musician (as a member of Der Plan, for example), producer, and Ata Tak label operative. Similarities in the working practices and musical leanings of Pyrolator and Klosowski are there for all to see, or rather to hear. Both were interested in collage, obscure music, and technical innovation. They went into the studio together and recorded Home Taping Is Killing Music. The original plan was to issue the album on Hilsberg's ZickZack label, but it actually came out through Ata Tak. Why was that? Pyrolator: "We felt that the album was far better suited to Ata Tak, and so we came to an agreement with Alfred that we could release the record." Klosowski adds another significant detail to this explanation: "Pyrolator had to invest more time and work than anticipated. He had imagined it all to be somewhat easier. I lacked experience in studio technology, so Pyrolator had to bear the brunt of that. Two worlds collided, that of a trained musician and my own. We overshot the studio budget by some distance." The Klosowski album produced by Pyrolator thus became a joint Klosowski/Pyrolator album, with Ata Tak the logical label choice. Home Taping Is Killing Music is a rough diamond from the pioneering era of sampling technology. True, the Emulator 1 already existed and was used extensively, but the tape machine which Klosowski designed and constructed could play considerably longer loops and samples than the E-MU Systems product. And so it was that salsa trumpets and Gregorian chants were heard side-by-side, railway noises aligned with Cambodian music and gospel met Bavarian yodeling. At no time did technology become an end in itself: it always served the melody, the beat, the element of surprise. In short, it was in the service of listening pleasure.
LOREN MAZZACANE CONNORS [aka GUITAR ROBERTS] - The Departing of a Dream Volume I (Family Vineyard 11; USA) "Vinyl reissue of master guitarist Loren Connors' modern classic The Departing of a Dream -- the first of what would become a three volume series based loosely as tribute to Miles Davis' "He Loved Him Madly."
The Departing of a Dream is Loren Connors's first album of 2002 and the debut of his minus-MazzaCane handle. This album finds Loren exploring distant voices of slowly churned darkened hues -- each collapsing onto themselves and his signature ghost melodies. The first nine pieces are a tribute to Miles Davis's epic "He Loved Him Madly." The album closes with For "NY 9/11/01" -- a two part suite that finds Loren, for the first time in over a decade, playing acoustic guitar.
"Loren's latest is a sublime tribute to Miles' 'He Loved Him Madly' - one of the saddest and most mesmerizing of all Miles' vast catalogue and a tribute to the then recently departed jazz god, Duke Ellington. Loren plays all of the instruments here including electric bass and subtle percussion and even approximates the sound of Miles' haunting trumpet tone, like a ghost drifting by. Also included is the short but devastating 'For NY 9/11', recorded that fateful day and only [until now] available as limited-edition CD-R." -- Bruce Lee Ganter, Downtown Music Gallery, NYC
DON CHERRY With JOHNNY DYANI/OKAY TEMIZ - Live in Paris, April 22, 1971 ('B13' 191; Italy) Clear red vinyl in PVC sleeve. Limited edition 500 copies. "In 1971, jazz trumpet player Don Cherry was living in an artists' colony in Sweden (where he met his wife, Moki) and becoming deeply interested in world music, which would mark a deep shift in his music from this point onward. In spring of 1971, Cherry traveled to Paris with his avant-garde jazz trio, made up of the great South African bassist, Johnny Dyani, and Turkish percussionist Okay Temiz (who would also appear on his Organic Music Society) to perform live for an audience of French jazz fans."
JOHN CALE With LOU REED/PATTI SMITH/DAVID BYRNE/ALLEN LANIER/MICK RONSON/CHRIS SPEDDING - Live at the Ocean Club in New York, July 21, 1976 ('B13' 195; Italy) Clear yellow vinyl in PVC sleeve. Limited edition 500 copies. "The night of July 21, 1976 was a star-studded and memorable one for downtown NYC music fans, as John Cale, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, David Byrne (of the Talking Heads), Allen Lanier (of Blue Oyster Cult), Mick Ronson (David Bowie), and guitar guru Chris Spedding regaled fans with a slew of Cale classics like 'Guts,' 'Buffalo Ballet,' and 'I Keep a Close Watch' as well as the Velvets' 'I'm Waiting for the Man,' and the Modern Lovers' 'Pablo Picasso' (which was produced by John Cale for the Modern Lovers' 1976 LP). And as if all this weren't already enough, recording the performance was Andy Warhol himself. Do not miss this slice of music history."
JOY DIVISION - YMCA 2-8-79 (Acme 1099; UK) "First time official issue of this previously unissued classic and historical London live performance from 1979. Recorded live in August 1979 as part of a series of four legendary post punk gigs that included Throbbing Gristle, Echo & The Bunnymen, Red Crayola, and Cabaret Voltaire. Limited edition 180 gram vinyl comes complete with textured sleeve and a poster insert."
T2 [PETER DUNTON/KEITH CROSS/BERNARD JINKS] - 1971-72: The Unreleased Album (Acme 1086; UK) 2013 repress. "Unreleased studio recordings from 1971 and 1972 which were originally planned as an album release. If this had been released at the time, T2 would have certainly gone on to the big leagues of rock, joining Free, Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, etc. Sadly, this was never released and so we are happy to present this previously unheard underground masterpiece. Comes on 180 gram vinyl."
MERRELL FANKHAUSER & HMS BOUNTY - Things (Guerssen 49; EEC) One of the all-time '60s classics, coming out from the California desert of Antelope Valley where HMS leader Merrell Fankhauser lived for a couple of years. This was released on Uni in late 1968, and gosh it's a killer! Flower power psychedelia, great all original songs, this is one of those albums you shouldn't miss under any circumstance. Remastered sound, original artwork and an insert with liners by Merrell and a great photo from his own archive.
"Classic '67-68-style west coast psych album, by the group Merrell Fankhauser formed after the Impacts and Fapardokly (and before he went off to form Mu with Jeff Cotton of Beefheart's Magic Band). Some of Merrill's most luxurious music, including the monster ""Drivin' Sideways (On A One Way Street)", the eastern-tinged "A Visit With Ashiya", etc. "A rare psychedelic pastry, well-baked in the California desert, circa 1968!. Mindblown original tunes, fuled by jangly 12-string and kick-started with crispy fuzz guitar."
TITUS GROAN - Titus Groan (Lost Century 71009; UK) "Classic 1971 UK progressive rarity. Comes in a gatefold sleeve, just like the original LP. Lengthy tracks mix with flutes, seering guitars, Beatles-esque harmonies and a psych edge. Limited edition, 180 gram vinyl."
FRUMPY - All Will Be Changed (Lost Century 71001; UK) "Vinyl reissue of 1970 German progressive classic. Regarded as the perfect '70s sounding prog album with a bluesy edge, burning Hammond organ sounds, lengthy tracks, and bluesy vocals."
CECIL McCARTNEY - Om (Lost Century 6283; UK) "Reissue of sadly underrated 1968 UK psych-folk rarity. Mixing in melodic psych folk with experimental feel throughout. This album has been neglected for far too long! And yes, he is related! Limited edition 300 copies only."
GRACE SLICK With PAUL KANTNER/DAVID CROSBY/DAVID FREIBERG/JACK CASSIDY/RON CARTER/PETER KAUKONEN/CRAIG CHAQUICO et al - Manhole (Floating World 6095; UK) Manhole was the last of the experimental Jefferson Airplane, and Grace Slick's first official solo album. While Bark and Long John Silver, the final stages of the original Airplane, displayed the excessive psychedelic nature of the musicians within the confines of their group format, Blows Against the Empire, Sunfighter, and Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun allowed for total artistic expression. Manhole concluded this phase with 1974's other release, the Jefferson Starship's Dragonfly. By taking the name from Paul Kantner's Blows Against the Empire solo project, Dragonfly began the renewed focus on commercial FM which would turn into Top 40 airplay. Manhole is the antithesis of that aim, but is itself a striking picture of Grace Slick as the debutante turned hippy being as musically radical as possible. To the kids who think she's the cool singer on the mechanical Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now, Manhole is an alien concoction, but it works on many levels as great head music. The title track itself is almost 15-and-a-half minutes of orchestrated underground rock with Craig Chaquico on lead guitar; Jack Casady on bass, along with Ron Carter; voices from David Crosby, David Freiberg, Slick and Paul Kantner; mandolin by Peter Kaukonen; and a 42-piece orchestra (51, if you include the fragments of the Airplane/Starship onboard). It's fun stuff, but looking back one wonders how they maintained a distribution deal for Grunt records with R.C.A., the material being so far from commercial. The title track has a left-hand piano part which "was stolen from an improvisation by Ivan Wing," Slick's father, and the epic is rife with Spanish/English by the singer, translated in the booklet with Slick's "phonetic Spanish spelling." Again, this is total underground excess, but it is actually more than listenable than it looks on paper, and for fans, it has the serious/eccentric nature of this woman who emerged as a big, big star due to her quirky personality having the talent to back it up. Attacks on the government and Clive Davis in the elaborate booklet only prove all involved were not out to make friends, but songs like "Come Again? Toucan" are compelling and intriguing, more so than some of what would constitute 1981's Welcome to the Wrecking Ball, which contained more elements of guitarist Scott Zito than the star. On Manhole, the music is wonderfully dense, macabre, exhilarating, and totally out there. This is a great portion of music from the lead singer of one of America's great music groups. Maybe David Freiberg's "It's Only Music" deserved to be on an Airplane project or solo LP of his own, but it sounds great and works. "Better Lying Down" is Grace Slick and Pete Sears re-writing Janis Joplin's "Turtle Blues," a nice change of pace from the heavy instrumental backing of the other tracks. Slick is in great voice, and reflecting on the album years after it was recorded, the conclusion is that Manhole has much to offer fans. Compare this to Deep Space -- recorded live at the Hollywood House of Blues in the 1990s to see the difference between capturing the time and trying to recapture the magic. Despite the eye toward success and the more serious nature of that later project, it just doesn't have the charm of this artifact from the glory days. It's also a far cry from the 1980s, when Slick returned with three more solo outings: Dreams, Welcome to the Wrecking Ball, and Software, projects which differ vastly from Manhole. The hard rock of Wrecking Ball and the synths and post-Kantner Starship feel of producer Peter Wolf's collaborations on Software show a woman dabbling with other rock formats. Put those three discs in a boxed set with Manhole, and you have true culture shock from a major counterculture figure. Manhole is orchestrated psychedelia at its finest with the voice from "White Rabbit" stretching that concept across two sides. ~ Joe Viglione, AMG
BRAM STOKER - Heavy Rock Spectacular (Kismet 4039; UK) Tony (Anthony) Bronsdon - Hammond organ, vocals; Pete Ballam - guitar, vocals; Jon Bavin - bass, vocals; Rob Haines - drums.
This quartet hailed from Bournemouth, and played a dense brand of organ-heavy prog that drew on classical, jazz, and hard rock in equal measure. Their sole album appeared on a tiny label in the UK only in the autumn of 1972, and sank without a trace. It makes a welcome return to CD here.
MANTIS - Turn Onto Music (Kismet 4038; UK) This psychedelic funk classic is firmly established as one of the most collectable albums of all time. Recorded by a quartet from Fiji, it was only released in New Zealand, where it appeared in tiny quantities on the legendary Vertigo label in 1973. An irresistible blend of originals (notably the epic "Island Suite") and covers (including material by Mountain, The Wackers, and Jo Jo Gunne), original copies have sold for well into four figures, making this CD reissue especially welcome.
