VYACHESLAV 'SLAVA' GANELIN & VLADIMIR VOLKOV - Ne Slyshno (Auris 12; EEC) Ne Slyshno is a unique collaboration of Israeli pianist and composer Slava (Vyacheslav) Ganelin and Russian double bass player Vladimir Volkov. The musicians met in Israel in the fall of 2005 and recorded this spontaneous studio session. The interaction, openness and boldness of this duo creates very impulsive and surprising record, which is in fact much more than just plain free jazz or improvisational avant-garde stuff. Using the forms of cutting-edge jazz and contemporary improvisation this duo creates something that is no less than trans-European, inter-traditional and multi-sensual improvised music with multicultural ethnic and classical influences and aesthetics of contemporary jazz and classical music. Amazing musical landscape full of incredible surprises.

TRIO OF DOOM [JOHN McLAUGHLIN/JACO PASTORIUS/TONY WILLIAMS] - Trio of Doom (Sony; USA) In 1979, the concept of the power trio in rock was alive and well -- everywhere from punk's Police and the Jam, to arena favorites Rush and ZZ Top. The concept of the hyper-amped power trio in the more rarefied field of jazz-rock fusion, however, was virtually non-existent, especially on the concert stage. For one glorious moment in 1979, a window was opened and the results -- thanks to the prescience of Columbia Records, and the combined artistry of guitarist John McLaughlin, bassist Jaco Pastorius, and drummer Tony Williams were preserved in the archives as a musical time capsule.
Nearly 30 years later, that time capsule has been opened. The 25 minutes of previously unreleased music performed live in Havana on March 3rd by the hastily named trio - an improvisational drums solo followed by four numbers -- coupled with five tracks recorded the next week at Columbia Studios in New York (including three that were later issued on the Havana Jam double-LPs, and two previously unreleased alternate takes) are now gathered together on one album for the first time.
The collective talent of these three musicians, and their enduring influence, goes far beyond the bounds of jazz or even the jazz-rock fusion genres. All three had deep roots in rock and roll and blues -- and jazz -- that shaded their music no matter what setting they found themselves in. TRIO OF DOOM underscores a template that was passed down to the next generation of electric guitarists, electric bassists, and drummers whose styles transcended the confining limitations of jazz and rock. Improvisational jazz never rocked this hard, and instrumental rock never cooked with such brainpower.
"GEE! It's only through this release that I now learn that a 'fast one' was pulled all those years ago on the two Havana Jam double LP sets: they used the STUDIO versions of Dark Prince [McLaughlin], Continuum [Pastorius], and Para Oriente [Williams] and dubbed in the audience noise!
This TOD CD starts off with the actual 25 minute set played at the Havana Festival, with the REAL live versions of the aforementioned 3 songs, including the drum solo that opened Dark Prince, ending with a version of McLaughlin's Are You The One Are You The One.
This is followed by the studio versions of the three TOD tunes, including two extra takes of Para Oriente. Great Fun for all us McLauglin, Williams and Pastorious fans!" - MannyLunch
NOTE TO RICHARD SEIDEL from MannyLunch: Now when the f*ck is Sony/BMG Legacy gonna release the 'Complete' From Nothingness To Eternity - Central Park '73 Mahavishnu Orchestra concert from Central Park 1973?!?!? That project was only started 8 years ago, and sidetracked by the Trident Sessions. Now that would be more than Great Fun - IT IS ESSENTIAL LISTENING, PLEASE!!!
And maybe even an OFFICIAL RELEASE from vault tapes of a complete McLaughlin/Santana show from the same year...
And a remastered Santana - Lotus...

With certain musicians play, you get the feeling that they're on a level above their peers. And what's more, it seems to come easy to them. Current saxophonists that fit this mould include Chris Potter, Joe Lovano and Kenny Garrett. Add Donny McCaslin to that list. Donny McCaslin with his new project In Pursuit delivers an exceptional album. Great compositions, great musicianship, great soloists. With McCaslin, the musicians on this record are all first rate.

JOEL HARRISON With NGUYEN LE/DAVE BINNEY et al - Harbor (Act 7167/HighNote; USA) Featuring Joel Harrison on guitar & compositions, Nguyen Le on guitar, David Binney on alto sax, Gildas Bocle on bass and Jamey Haddad on drums & percussion. What I dig most about downtown guitar hero, Joel Harrison, is that each and every one of his discs has a different concept, different personnel and a unique sound. Joel is a restless explorer who draws from different genres of the jazz & rock guitar traditions as well as from different cultures. Who else but Joel Harrison could put out a tribute to George Harrison, a tribute to Soft Machine (as yet unrecorded) and an adventurous debut disc with three guitars (w/ Nels Cline) and three drummers?!? Joel always selects his collaborators well and was lucky work with the great guitarist Nguyen Le, Vietnamese/French musician who rarely comes to New York. You Bring the Rain has a lovely, laid back theme yet soon moves into an area of African rhythms and great space/rock/fusion guitar solo. Jamey Haddad's hand percussion keeps these flowing and is most inspired and uplifting. Dave Binney takes the first of a number of fine, slow-burning sax solos. Blue Ghosts of Bourbon Street has a rich, lilting and sumptuous melody with a great bluesy guitar solo by Mr. Le with some inventive rhythm guitar by Joel. One of the magical things about this disc is the way Joel and Nguyen both change their tones and approaches to their guitars and add different spices and sounds to each piece. Another special element here is the use of ethnic sounds and samples that add an element of mystery to most of these pieces. End Time shows that fusion is not dead, but that it can still be dealt with in fresh and unexpected ways. I dig the way some of Nguyen Le's guitar solos seem to float in from another world, yet they still fit in an odd way. Joel Harrison has again succeeded in blending diverse approaches with memorable melodies, impressive guitar and sax solos and without pushing the fusion sound too far into our faces. No small feat and indeed a most impressive collection. - BLG

MUSHROOM with EDDIE GALE - "Joint Happening" (Hyena 9359; USA) This version of Mushroom features sixties trumpet hero Eddie Gale, Matt Henry Gunitz on various acoustic & electric keyboards, Ned Doherty on bass and Pat Thomas on drums, plus guests Tim Plowman & Erik Pearson on guitars and David Brandt & Dave Mihaly on vibes, marimba & percussion. Once or twice a year Bay Area-based jazz/rock/psych/prog/jam band, Mushroom, release a new disc with varying personnel and most-often great results. Their last couple of collaborations were with some fine, under-recognized vocalists, Alison Faith Levy and Gary Floyd. On 'Joint Happening', Mushroom are joined by legendary Blue Note trumpet hero, Eddie Gale, who just played here at the Vision Fest last week (6/23/07) and sounded as amazing as he always does. This is a fine studio effort and not live like some of the other Mushroom discs, giving the band more control over the atmosphere and overall sound. "Peace" begins with some sublime and spacious mellotron (w/ flute samples) and is soon joined Eddie's superb muted trumpet. Mushroom often create atmospheric space/psych music with cosmic results. Their sound is in between the Sun Ra Arkestra and early Pink Floyd. "I Don't Need to Fight, To Prove I'm Right" has a righteous, laid-back space groove, perfect for stoners and those who like to dance freely and slowly. I love the way "I Was Torn Down at the Dance PlaceÉ" builds into a great, space/groove jam with some fine muted trumpet by Mr. Gale, sublime and inventive guitar from Erik Pearson and keyboards from Matt Gunitz. Mushroom would be a perfect band to have at a dance for those who like to move around and just hangout and groove on the great vibes. - BLG

ALDO CLEMENTI - Works with Guitar (Mode 182; USA) "Like his near contemporary Franco Donatoni, Aldo Clementi (b.1925) is an Italian composer who has had a very fruitful association with that most Italian of instruments, the guitar. Both Clementi and Donatoni shared similar paths in their compositional development: the early influences of major early 20th-century composers through the adoption and later rejection of serialism and the Darmstadt courses they both attended, culminating in their very individual mature styles. Clementi's recent pieces are influenced by visual artists, particularly the intricately recursive figures in the lithographs of M.C. Escher and the richly repetitive surfaces of the paintings of the contemporary Italians Dorazio and Vasarely. Clementi saturates the aural surface of his works with repetitive moving lines whose motion becomes subsumed into an aural stasis -- mechanisms that appear to go nowhere and inevitably fold back upon themselves, seemingly collapsing into negativity and decay that nonetheless project a compelling sonic sensuality. This is the first complete CD devoted to Clementi's compositions involving the guitar. All first recordings."

FOVEA HEX [CLODAGH SIMONDS] - Allure: Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent Pt 3 (Die Stadt 89; Germany) "First in the 'Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent' series of three CD EPs by this new project founded by Irish singer Clodagh Simonds, formerly of the early '70s psych group Mellow Candle. Featuring Colin Potter, Laura Sheeran, Cora Venus Lunny, Robert Fripp, Percy Jones, Donal Lunny, John Contreras, Michael Begg, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree)."

FOVEA HEX [CLODAGH SIMONDS] - Neither Speak Nor Remain Box: Bloom/Huge/Allure [3 CD set] (Die Stadt 89BOX; Germany) Series of three CD EPs by this new project founded by Irish singer Clodagh Simonds, formerly of the early '70s psych group Mellow Candle. Fovea Hex continues to shape-shift and to evade & confound those who bray 'what exactly is it?,' and 'where does it BELONG exactly?,' and 'who exactly belongs to IT?'. If you must bang on the table like that, you won't hear a thing. If this music can be described as 'up-to-the-moment,' then perhaps we could use an up-to-the-moment term like 'collective.' But eschewing all Fashion Accessory stalls, it lives as many miles away from the shock'n'awe factory beloved of the avantgarde, as it does from the souvenir-strewn temple of the new nostalgics.
All in all, Fovea Hex is something more akin to a labrynthine ensemble of associates, some recent, some ancient, some close to the core, some distant, some very heard-of and some never-heard-of, all of whom showed willing and able, at some point in time (and for reasons best known to themselves) to slither in and help prepare and perform these songs and quasi-songs written -- or at least started-off -- by Clodagh Simonds. 'Songs that don't go where you think. With voices to match...' somebody said recently. At the end of the day, that's about all that CAN be said with any kind of certainty. If you need a better idea of what this means, visit the Janet Records website now, where you'll find some treats we prepared earlier -- with six mixes of near-moment excerpts from the songs from EP 1 and EP 2 Huge. "
Disc 1 Bloom: featuring Brian Eno, Roger Eno, Laura Sheeran, Lydia Sasse, Cora Venus Lunny, Toby Arnott, Carter Burwell and Andrew McKenzie of The Hafler Trio.
Disc 2 Huge: featuringColin Potter, Roger Doyle, Cora Venus Lunny, Brian Eno, Laura Sheeran, Percy Jones, Carter Burwell, Lydia Sasse, Hugh O'Neill, Sarah McQuaid.
Disc 3 Allure: featuring Colin Potter, Laura Sheeran, Cora Venus Lunny, Robert Fripp, Percy Jones, Donal Lunny, John Contreras, Michael Begg, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree)."

A HAWK AND A HACKSAW [JEREMY BARNES] - A Hawk and a Hacksaw and The Hun Hangar Ensemble [CD/DVD EP] (Leaf 047; UK) "A real treat for the burgeoning ranks of A Hawk And A Hacksaw fans, this strictly limited EP includes the first fruits of the duo's blossoming relationship with a group of extraordinarily talented Hungarian folk musicians, who have come together under the name The Hun Hangar Ensemble to tour Europe with A Hawk And A Hacksaw this summer. Consisting of eight newly-recorded songs, both original and traditional, the EP serves as an introduction for both the listener and the artists themselves as they get to know each other, providing a platform from which music and ideas can evolve. In addition to the CD, a 20-minute bonus DVD (An Introduction To A Hawk And A Hacksaw) documents the last two years of almost continuous touring by the original duo of Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost, with behind-the-scenes insight into their travels across Europe, as well as some great live footage captured in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Anyone not yet au fait with the group's blistering but delightfully intimate live performances would do well to sample some of the fun. There are only 4,000 individually numbered copies of this release available worldwide, in special gatefold card packaging." The DVD is NTSC format, region free

COLLEEN [CECILE SCHOTT] - Les Ondes Silencieuses (Leaf 57; UK) "Cecile Schott returns with her third album as Colleen, the highly personal, distinctly adventurous and confident Les Ondes Silencieuses, which follows Colleen Et Les Boites A Musique from late 2006. This album signals a change of approach for Parisienne Schott. Gone are the samples and loops of old, as the emphasis moves to the natural tones produced by a range of unusual live instruments, largely unadorned. The seeds for this album were sown when the 15-year-old Schott happened upon the film Tous Les Matins Du Monde, based on the life of Marin Marais, the acclaimed 17th century viola da gamba (or viol) player and composer. The sound and mystery of the instrument set her off on an obsession which reached fruition in 2005 when she found a viola maker who custom-built one for her. More fascinating to play than she had ever imagined, it produced a sound so rich and naturally resonant that the loop-based works that had become a defining characteristic of Colleen's work could be laid to rest. A whole new approach to composing was needed, both in a more traditional and, paradoxically, a more improvised way. Chord changes, greater use of space and tempo variations were all now possible."

TAKUMA KANAIWA - Pegado Afficionado (amukaT; USA) Featuring Takuma Kanaiwa on most instruments & voice plus Tom Chess on sax, Hagus on Ethiopian harp & vocal, Tara Thomas on dub vocal plus Tom Augsberger, Jonathan Wilz, Seth White & Ed Robinson on drums & percussion. About three years ago a young named Takuma Kanaiwa gave me dub/reggae to review and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was, since I hadn't heard of him before this. We, he has done it again with another fine, righteous and tasty morsel of reggae/dub coolness. "Dutch Guts" opens with a great groove and a fine chorus of horns. It sounds as if Takuma is looping a thumb piano for that hypnotic vibe. Takum does a great job of looping or layering different sounds or samples on each piece, adding a variety of surprising sounds to the mix. Occasional voices, scratched records, cheesy synth or organ, snips of acoustic & electric guitar and other assorted charming sounds. This is a perfect disc for a party with no singing or other things to distract us from the mood of just getting down and hanging loose. - BLG

CHRIS HUMPHREY With MATT WILSON - Nothing But Blue (Cadence 1201; USA) Featuring Chris Humphrey (vocals) w/ Matt Wilson (drums) - Martin Wind (bass) - Mark Shilansky (piano). This is classic Jazz vocal - timeless in its appeal and natural in its delivery. A wonderful example of the art of vocalist as an instrumentalist. Chris Humphrey makes his debut on 8 standards and 3 notable originals, delivered with sincerity and a naturalness of flow. Chris Humphrey is a singer of significance.

BRUCE LEE GALLANTER REVIEWS SOME PREVIOUSLY LISTED DISCS:

CONNIE CROTHERS QUARTET - Music is a Place (New Artists 1043; USA) Featuring Connie Crothers on piano, Richard Tabnik on alto sax, Ratzo Harris on bass and Roger Mancuso on drums. Although pianist and composer, Connie Crothers, studied with the influential pianist/composer/philosopher, Lennie Tristano, so many years ago, she continues to be associated with Tristano and his other students or collaborators, The thing is, Ms. Crothers has continued to evolve and has some dozen discs out as a leader. Each one a worthy gem to consider. She has worked with members of this great quartet for quite a long time, Tabnik for 25 years and Mancuso for 35 years. This particular quartet has worked together weekly for the past five years. You can hear the proof in the pudding as there is a special bond that links this group together. Each of the seven pieces was composed by members of the quartet and each is special in a different way. "Helen's Tune" has an odd structure that keeps shifting in different sections as if there are a couple of sub-groups at work. It is both playful and slightly bent at the same time. Tabnik reminds me of Lee Konitz at times and with Jackie McLean at other times with his unpredictable solos. Connie's has a certain elegance and sophistication that puts her in a class by itself, she sounds like no-one else but herself. Another thing that makes this quartet so special is the way they all flow together, they have the dream-like feel that reminds me of Miles' rhythm team for the mid-sixties with Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Often Connie's piano solos move in unlikely ways, starting in one direction and then adding layers of lines that she plucks from another realm, similar to the way Sun Ra often pulls rabbits out of hat or space-cap. It is rare at the store that Mikey lets me leave on an entire 60+ minute jazz disc that we both find inventive and interesting throughout when we are working together, but this disc meets both of our high standards. - BLG
CD $12

ADAM LANE QUARTET - Buffalo (Cadence Jazz 1193; USA) Featuring Adam Lane on contrabass & compositions, Vinny Golia on tenor & soprano saxes, Paul Smoker on trumpet and Vijay Anderson on drums. Downtown/world-class bassist, composer and multi-bandleader, Adam Lane, never seems to rest as he continues to explore a wide variety of situations and projects. His great trio with reeds wizard Vinny Golia and the great drummer Vijay Anderson have two fine discs out on CIMP, recorded during their tour in February of 2005. When they got to Buffalo, trumpeter Paul Smoker sat in and thus this disc is taken from that auspicious gig. Vinny Golia, who plays more reeds than anyone else, limits himself to just tenor and soprano sax and still sounds amazing. "Spin with the EARth" features Vinny on that feisty tenor as Adam strums his rich, probing bass with Vijay's most supportive drums. Nice to hear Vinny wailing and sailing on tenor as the bass and drums spin furiously below him. Eventually Paul Smoker enters and also blows up a storm, the quartet erupting together. "Without Being" begins with an inspired and soulful bowed and plucked bass solo from Adam, followed by some superb soprano sax and trumpet slyly playing together, with strong solos from Vinny on soprano and Paul trumpet. Paul sits out on "Free" which sounds like an apt title with Vinny playing some flute at the very beginning, followed by what sounds like brooding, slow-burning bari sax. Just as free and suspenseful is the next piece, "In Out Time", which features some alien sounding sax and trumpet multi-phonics, which fits perfectly with Adam eerie bowed bass. Commencing with "Lucia's First Breath", which is centered by Adam's trusty repeating bassline and features more grand solos from Vinny on soprano and Paul on trumpet. It is also the consistently spirited rhythm team that also keeps things flowing just right throughout as well. Strong medicine from a colossal quartet. - BLG

MARSHALL ALLEN & LOU GRASSI - Live at The Guelph Festival (Cadence Jazz 1192; USA) Featuring the great dynamic duo of Sun Ra Arkestra leader, Marshall Allen on alto sax and the great Lou Grassi on drums. Legendary Sun Ra saxist, Marshall Allen, can be heard on hundreds of recordings by the Sun Arkestra, starting way back in the mid-fifties, but hearing in a smaller group situation is pretty rare. More recently Marshall can be heard a half dozen discs on CIMP or Cadence Jazz. Downtown drum wiz, Lou Grassi, has recorded eight discs for CIMP or Cadence and has worked together with Marshall on a previous CIMP date. This fine live date was recorded a few days before the September 11th disaster at the Guelph Jazz Fest in Ontario, Canada and shelved do to the emotional baggage brought by that sad event. It has finally been released and it is good thing. Both of these players are master musicians and there is a superb balance of throughout this nearly 70 minute set. Marshall composed four of the six pieces here with covers, "When You Wish Upon a Star" and Duke's "Prelude to a Kiss". As Lou plays orchestral and impressionistic sounding drums, Marshall slowly, quietly builds and weaves his dream-like waves, eventually hitting his stride with some of those Sun Ra-like blasts. The duo quickly erupts and takes off with furious blasts of alto sax well matched by Lou's dynamic drums. A swell flood of activity takes over and escalates higher and higher with Marshall twisting those notes inside-out and upside-down as Lou's swirling drums also kick in. Each piece builds organically and explores different terrain, sometimes cautious, sometimes explosive and everywhere in between. Marshall plays some somber flute on "Far Side" while Lou also plays restrained with his hands on the drums. Duke's "Prelude to a Kiss" is done with the essence of bluesy restraint one moment and occasionally exploding fractured sax bursts. An excellent duo excursion that really can't be beat. - BLG

MICHAEL BISO QUARTET - CIMP 360: Circle This (CIMP #360; USA) Featuring Michael Bisio on bass & compositions, Avram Fefer on tenor & soprano saxes, Stephen Gauci on tenor sax and Jay Rosen on drums. What amazes me about the CIMP label is that with some 260 discs released, they continue to surprise us with new combinations of players from the downtown as well as many other scenes. Former Pacific Northwest-based bassist, Michael Bisio, is now based up in New York State and has a dozen discs out as a leader or co-leader with Joe McPhee, Joe Giardullo, Eyvind Kang and Avram Fefer. This Michael's third quartet date, the second with this particular all-star quartet. The title track is first and it has a lovely, playful theme for soprano and tenor that eventually picks up the pace and begins sailing quickly as the soprano soars. Both Avram and Steve have rich, warm tones on their tenors and sound great together. It is often Michael's great charts that show off everyone's inventive spirit. "Its Own Universe" starts with a great tenor sax duo that allows each saxist to explore, squawk and squeal together in a swirling storm. On "Island Earth", it is again the strong harmonies of the saxes that sound so rich and tasty, as well as the way the rhythm team plays that joyous groove throughout. I dig the way "Times that Bond" begins freely and soon erupts into a fast paced hard swinging powerful excursion with both saxes, soprano and tenor sailing at opposite ends the tonal range together. Bisio's superb quick and inventive bass is featured at the center of the epic-length "Nitro, Don't Leave Home Without It". As both sax players spew slower lines of notes, Bisio's bass spins in a flurry between them. The piece develops in sections and keeps the quartet on their toes as it evolves. All four musicians must perform to the high standards that Bisio's wonderful charts provide. Hear them when they play near you, but this great disc right now and keep on smiling for sure. - BLG

ROB WAGNER TRIO with HAMID DRAKE/NOBU OZAKI - Trio (Valid 1013; USA) Featuring Rob Wagner on clarinet, tenor & soprano saxes & most compositions, Nobu Ozaki on bass and Hamid Drake on drum kit & frame drum. The diverse and creative multi-reeds wiz, Rob Wagner, has worked with the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, Galactic (prog/funk band), Latin bands and the Naked Orchestra, whose great disc I reviewed here a few years back. Former drummer turned bassist, Nobu Ozaki, has also migrated to New Orleans and does hundreds of gigs each year including the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars. The ever in-demand drummer and percussion god, Hamid Drake, is a world-class musician who works with too many greats to name here, certainly need no introduction. Right from the opening piece, "Desoparia", we know we are in for a welcome gem. Hamid is already spinning his magic rhythmic web as Rob plays some superb, spirited soprano sax with Nobu's robust bass also pumping it up. Mr. Wagner has written a slew of infectious songs, as each on here feels righteous and stirring. The first piece has a quick, klez-like melody and groove that is completely joyous. On "Plutino", Rob has a fine, warm sort of Assif Tsahar-like tone on his tenor that sounds both enchanting and luscious. Hamid's superb frame drum is featured on "Where is Home?" as is Rob's sly clarinet playing in a fine duo then trio situation. Hamid contributes the mighty fine "Shock, Awe, Sham, Shame" which features an incredible solo drum intro and then an immense duo with Rob's feisty tenor. Whether trio or duo, this is a marvelous disc with perfectly balanced sound (excellent work from Mark Bingham) and inspired playing throughout. - BLG

DIETRICH EICHMANN ENSEMBLE - The Hot Days (Leo 486; UK) Featuring Dietrich Eichamann on piano & harpsichord, Chris Heenan on alto sax & contrabass clarinet, Gunnar Brandt-Sigurdsson on electronics, hearing aid & vocals, Alexander Frangenheim & Christian Weber on double basses and Michael Griener on drums. Just about everyone here we know from some other lesser known improv projects mosty from Germany. We know Eichmann from his two duo discs with downtown drummer Jeff Arnel; Heenan from a CD with Rich West on pfMentum; Frangenheim from his work with Phil Durrant and Gunter Christmann; Weber from his recent disc on Hatology and both he & Griener have worked with Christoph Gallio in Day & Taxi.
I am unsure of how someone plays a hearing aid but that is what Gunnar plays on half of these pieces. Nearly half of the ten pieces are duos with Mr. Eichmann and Gunnar or Griener. Gunnar's electronics are quite odd, brittle and somewhat abrupt. The personnel on each piece differs, as does the instrumentation. The three part "Tests of Ethics" features electronics, alto sax, harpsichord and drums and is a strange blend of minimal but not quite lower-case improv. What is most striking is hearing improvised harpsichord with multi-phonic sax bleats and twisted electronic sounds. There are some weird sounds that are hard to identify, electronics or manipulated percussion or sax, it is hard to tell. The duos with Eichmann and Griener are all most successful and fascinating to hear as both players utilize similar textures and sounds. I find the acoustic improv to be more consistent and engaging throughout, but some of the electronics to be a bit too difficult in places. STEFAN PASBOURG With JOHN TCHICAI/MARC DUCRET/ELLERY ESKELIN/RAY ANDERSON et al - TriplePoint [3 CD set] (Ilk 130; EEC) This is a most adventurous collection of solos, duos and trios featuring the dynamic drumming of Stefan Pasborg with 14 different musicians: Ray Anderson (trombone), Ellery Eskelin (tenor sax), John Tchicai (tenor sax & voice), Marc Ducret (guitar), Carsten Dahl (piano), Alex Riel (drums), Jesper Zeuthen & Liudas Mockunas (saxes), Peter Friis-Nielsen (el. bass), Daniel Franck & Jeppe Skovbakke (acoustic basses), Jakob Munck (sousaphone), Jakob Riis (laptop) and Paul Brousseau (keyboards, guitar & samples). I recall Stefan Pasborg from some fine discs on TUM by John Tchicai and Delerium who are led by Mikko Innanen.
Stefan Pasborg is a most ambitious and creative drummer and here he has put together a fascinating project with his drums at the center of this vast 3 CD set. CD-1 features Stefan playing his drums solo with laptop treatments by Jakob Riis. Each of the ten pieces creates a different mood, a different rhythmic and textural world. As Stefan sets up different grooves, Jakob adds layers of electronics to enhance and create fluctuating atmospheres. Jakob samples Stefan's drums and cymbals and then alters them in different ways to come up with a variety of sonic manipulations and textures. Both players get equal space to fill, so the balance between the acoustic and electric sounds is just right and consistently fascinating. CD II features just duos of Pasborg and his well selected partners: Eskelin, Ducret, Tchicai, Riel, Dahl, Mockunas and Brousseau. Each duo is very different as Stefan finds a way work with each collaborator most successfully. From the great, tight, focused herky-jerky groove of his duo with Mockunas on tenor sax to the alien, yet calm keyboards of Brousseau to the rubbed cymbal eeriness of his cautious duo with Mr. Eskelin, each duo is very different. Guitar great Marc Ducret erupts into an amazing free/fusion jam with Stefan's fast and furious drums on "Avant-Scene". It is an unexpected delight to hear Ornette's "Peace Warriors" done on just tenor sax and drums by Eskelin and Stefan. CD-II ends with a great drum duo with Stefan and legendary Scandinavian drummer Alex Riel, playing marvelously together. Disc III features all trios and is the best one of this batch. Most the trios include a bassist or Jakob Munck in the role of a bassist playing his sousaphone. The trios sound the most complete and focused and each is fascinating in its own way. The highlights include a trio with Carsten Dahl on piano and Daniel Franck on bass that is most exquisite and lyrical, as well as a sublime trio with Ellery on tenor and Jakob Munck on sousaphone that is also laid back and sublime. We get yet another fine Ornette cover here, "Una Muy Bonita", featuring Ray Anderson on trombone again with Munck's sousaphone, the infectious groove is another delight. Considering that this is a triple disc, it is pretty amazing throughout! - BLG

NOAH HOWARD & OMAR FAQIR - Desert Harmony / Peace and Humanity (AltoSax no number; France) Featuring Noah Howard on alto sax, Omar Faqir on piano & arrangements, Hassan Faqir on nei, Bobby Few on piano, Harry Swift on bass and Chris Henderson on drums plus the Bassoto Singers of South Africa. Omar and Hassan Faqir are a son and father originally from Jerusalem and currently living in Amman, Jordan. Legendary sixties free/jazz saxist, Noah Howard, has recorded classic discs for the ESP, America, Boxholder, Cadence & CIMP labels, as well as his own AltSax label. Mr. Howard has been living in France for the past decade returns to NY on rare occasion. Most of the tunes here were recorded in Omar's studio in Jordan, with the use of a drum machine as the rhythm instrument. The tunes are often quite lovely with tasty piano, guitar and perhaps an oud. While I like the laid back groove and vibe, some of the songs are a bit too laid back and lack an edge. The Bassoto Singers are similar to Ladysmith Black Mambazo and sound so fine singing with Noah's slow-burning alto sax. Do not expect any free/jazz frenetics, but this is still a nice, laid back disc. - BLG

NEW LOWER PRICES ON THESE THREE GREAT RECORDINGS:

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR [PETER HAMMILL/DAVID JACKSON/HUGH BANTON/GUY EVANS] - Real Time: Royal Festival Hall 06.05.05 [2 CD set] (Fie FIXD 01; UK) Van Der Graaf Generator was always different than its '70s progressive rock contemporaries. Groups like Yes continued to record new material despite considerable acrimony and comings and goings amongst their classic lineups, but on tour they almost exclusively emphasized their '70s repertoire. VDGG dissolved in the late '70s - the result of the rigors of touring and bad finances - but everyone remained in touch, often showing up on singer/primary songwriter Peter Hammill's subsequent solo albums.
The group reconvened in 2004 to see if there was anything left to be said, and their reunion studio double CD Present (Charisma/Virgin, 2005) suggested that not only was there life left in the group, but it was capable of new material reflective of artistic growth while maintaining its own characteristic identity. That VDGG's subsequent European tour in support of Present was enthusiastically received, is an understatement. With the release of the double-disc Real Time, as good as anything the band has ever recorded, fans who missed the tour can now assess for themselves whether or not VDGG still 'has it.'
IT DOES!!! VDGG was never about instrumental virtuosity, even though Hammill, organist Hugh Banton, saxophonist/flautist David Jackson and drummer Guy Evans are anything but slouches. Hammill recently revealed that during the recording of Present they spent a lot of time listening to Miles Davis' A Tribute to Jack Johnson (Legacy, 1970). Real Time may not speak that language, but in its adventurous pursuit of the unexpected, VDGG might be considered to be aligned with the spirit, if not the letter, of jazz.
VDGG has always been about the songs. Often dark and disturbing, the group majestically delivers the material with a maelstrom of energy that often feels like a vicious animal trying to escape its cage. It's no surprise that the punk/new wave movement of the late '70s related to VDGG, a raw and visceral alternative to progressive rock's impressive but often meaningless virtuosity. Hammill's fervent, sometimes primal scream-like delivery may be melodramatic, but it's never less than completely honest.
The fourteen songs on Real Time represent a cross-section of material from the group's entire discography, positioning material from Present (the disturbingly transcendent Every Bloody Emperor and equally powerful but less turbulent Nutter Alert) as new classics alongside old ones, including the tumultuous Killer and stately Refugees. Other highlights include vital versions of Lemmings and Man-Erg from the group's classic Pawn Hearts (Charisma, 1971). The studio versions were built on layers of instrumentation and effects; here the group is stripped down, but no less powerful - or TERRIFYING!
While a significantly altered version of VDG (dropping the 'Generator' from the name) released a live album in back the day - Vital (Charisma, 1978) - Real Time is the disc fans of the classic lineup have been waiting for. It delivers on every count, so the only question now is: was this a one-time reunion, or will VDGG continue? One can only hope. - John Kellman, AAJ
"..And you don't need to be a 'fan' to have your head rotated by this recording. IT IS PHENOMENAL! We heard from many who saw this show a couple of years ago - many were in London that week only to see the first of the Cream re-union shows and decided to take in this show as a lark - they came away shocked, astonished, and raving its virtues! MOONDOG [LOUIS HARDIN] - The Viking of Sixth Avenue [2 CD set] (Honest Jon's 118; UK) "This new release from Honest Jon's is the first overview of Moondog's amazing artistic life -- including recordings spanning from 1949 till 1995, with numerous 78s and various other vanished records revived for the first time (not to mention a couple of Weegee photographs!). Though the compilation is rooted in the decades Moondog regularly lived rough in New York City, performing on street corners -- 'the Viking Of Sixth Avenue' -- at the same time it lays the music's claim to the future. It makes vivid sense of his inspiration of fans from Igor Stravinsky to Bob Dylan, Mr Scruff to Frank Zappa, Charlie Parker to Elvis Costello, Janis Joplin to Anthony And The Johnsons. As Moondog put it himself in 1989 -- 'I still love horned helmets and swords and spears. I like to feel that I'm loyal to my past. I wouldn't want to be on the street anymore. But, you know, that led to a lot of things.' Moondog was born Louis Thomas Hardin on May 26, 1916, in Marysville, Kansas. Noting the five-year-old's interest in percussion, his father -- an Episcopal minister -- took him to see an Arapaho Sun Dance. During the ritual the budding musician was allowed to sit on Chief Yellow Calf's lap and play the tom-tom. This experience -- and later playing tom-tom and flute with the Blackfoot tribe in Idaho at another Sun Dance -- would have a profound and lasting effect on the development of his own music and ideas. 'The American Indians have this basic beat,' Moondog said in 1995, 'a heartbeat in two speeds -- a walking beat (in twos) and a running beat (in four). I use those rhythms to this day. In fact it just came to me recently that American Indian music is just so syncopated that any jazz musician -- especially in the swing era -- would see a clear connection between jazz and Indian music. Those songs are not improvised -- they've been handed down from generation to generation -- they're extremely old. I think of America as an 'Old World' too, maybe older culturally than Europe.' And elsewhere: 'Harmonically, my music is the same as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms; rhythmically, it goes back to the past -- the swing rhythms of the Indians. You really couldn't find anything more syncopated.'"

SLEEPYTIME GORILLA MUSEUM [NILS FRYKDAHL/DAN RATHBURN/CARLA KIHLSTEDT/MOE! STAINO/FRANK GRAU] - Live (Sickroom 14; USA) Unlike their classic first studio album, the second Sleepytime album is a very different affair. Our good buddy Carla Kihlstedt and her Bay Area clan are one of the most striking and original of all current bands under the "progressive" banner. Taken from what sounds to be a pretty large collection of live shows, this is like an assembled aural snapshot of the STGM all live and sweaty and packed into some tiny club somewhere, including all of the noises and sounds and general weirdness that occur incidentally to the music, and that's what Sleepytime have left in for your enjoyment (including Moe! singing part of a song by Cheer Accident?!?) - BLG
"Welcome to the newest installation by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum! Collected here are 16 enchanting live specimens gathered from various environments, over the course of several years of exhibition, experimentation, and performance. The administrators of this showing include guitarist/vocalist Nils Frykdahl as well as bassist and instrument creator Dan Rathburn, who for many years were a part of the amazing group, Idiot Flesh. Joining these fine young gentlemen is Carla Kihlstedt (Tin Hat Trio/Charming Hostesses) on violin and voice. Additionally, we have Moe! Staiano, pounding away on various scraps, artifacts, and industrial waste, and drummer Frank Grau (Species Being). The rooms of the museum are occupied by an array of traditional orchestration, found object percussion, and home made instrumental creations. These spaces are filled with sounds and sights that have captivated audiences from coast to coast.
Songs about a baby doctor, the apocalypse, homicidal feuding neighbors, and the evil of sleep. A request for stolen tank tops and the destruction of a Doobie Brothers' album. This is what you paid your money for." Was $15, nowÉ

MORE ARCHIVAL RECORDINGS, REISSUES & RESTOCKS:

DON CHERRY - Hear And Now (Wounded Bird; USA) Hear and Now's cover depicts a smiling Cherry posing like Buddha, and holding a trumpet with a bent mouthpiece -- an indication of some meditative sounds, but it's really a mishmash of styles with a leaning toward African rhythms. An underlying social message runs through the album of Cherry compositions (except one) produced by Narada Michael Walden. Cherry plays very little trumpet on "Universal Mother"; the African-based excursion is carried by Neil Jason's bass, Sammy Figueroa's congas, and Raphael Cruz's percussion work. He plays stretching, calling trumpet notes on "Karmapa Chenno"; African chants and verbiage flavor the tune, along with Stan Samole's sparkling lead guitar. The guitar-driven "California" is a groove; Cherry plays to a roadhouse beat, sounding like Miles Davis on a tune that's much too brief (less than three minutes). He dusts off his flute and gives a good account on "Buddha's Blues," on which he also plays trumpet; the beat is funky but jumpy and disjointed. "Eagle Eye" is a trio with Cherry (on flute), Figueroa (conga), and Cruz (percussion) -- tight, but again less than three minutes. An expansive "Surrender Rose" tries to be grandiose but never rises above mediocrity, despite wallpaper backing from Cheryl Alexander, Phoenix Volatis, and Patty Saafa. "Journey of Milarepa," "Shanti," and "The Ending Movement Liberation" are done as a suite, turning out to be a saving grace as the only mind-bender here. An average collection from Cherry, respectable and inoffensive. ~ Andrew Hamilton, AMG

BOREDOMS [YAMANTAKA 'YAMATSUKA' EYE et al] - Onanie Bomb Meets The Sex Pistols: Anal By Anal/Osozeran No Stooges Kyo (Warner Bros; UK) The first-ever Boredoms release - the Anal By Anal mini-album - and their first full album Osozeran No Stooges. It all started here!
"Collecting the contents of the band's first two Japanese releases, Onanie Bomb shows that, from the start, the Boredoms were interested in musical chaos of a most unique degree. Rough but not lo-fi, Onanie rips, stomps, and explodes all over the place in several directions at once. Purists might object to calling some of what is whipped up "songs," but the goofy insanity in the death-march-meets-squalling-cartoon-voices of "We Never Sleep," and even the song titles which reach beyond over the top, like "Lick'n Cock Boatpeople" and "Anal Eater," could only be resisted by the stodgiest of souls. For all the extreme noise at play, what's evident on Onanie is the sheer sense of fun, much like the Boredoms' early inspirations, the Butthole Surfers. Thus, "Bite My Bollocks" sounds like a '50s strut and stroll revisited after several apocalypses -- a party where everyone has lost any sense of trying to be cool; where everyone wants to not merely burn down the house, but smash it to atoms. More than a few sounds wouldn't seem out of place on some of Yoko Ono's early albums, but there's something just a little more gone about tracks like the hyper-speed thrash of "No Core Punk" and "Melt Down Boogie"; they aren't so much stretching the boundaries of rock as they are torpedoing them and tossing the bits around in the air. One track ends with extended burp noises that eventually fade into semi-nothingness; another seems to consist of feedback noises recorded in a sheet metal factory and interspersed with wails and sudden attempts at solos. Topping off all of that with album art indicating that the performers play such instruments as "bicyclesynth," "tennis," and "kick & hit & shot," and clearly, the Boredoms aren't catering to "normalville" -- nobody is in Kansas anymore." ~ Ned Raggett, AMG

HAPPY END [HARUOMI HOSONO et al] - City (King; Japan) rare pre-YMO album from 1973, finally on CD. Happy End was a Japanese folk rock band that existed between 1970 and 1973.
Happy End's members were Haruomi Hosono (bass, vocals) and Takashi Matsumoto (drums) from the band Apryl Fool, Eiichi Ohtaki (guitar, vocals), and Shigeru Suzuki (guitar, vocals). They originally belonged to the "URC Records" recording label, and later the "Bellwood Records" label. Moby Grape and Buffalo Springfield among others were cited as their influencers.
Hosono later went on to form the Yellow Magic Orchestra. Matsumoto is now one of the most successful lyricists in Japan. Suzuki and Ohtaki also had long and varied careers.
(In 2003, the Happy End song "Kaze Wo Atsumete" appeared on the Lost In Translation movie soundtrack.)

MUSICA ELETTRONICA VIVA [MEV: ALLAN BRYANT/ALVIN CURRAN /FREDERIC RZEWSKI/JOHN PHETTTEPLACE] - MEV (IRML 02; USA) A previously unreleased document of MEV -- four sections of an improvisation recorded in London, 1968, spread out over 43 minutes. The line up was Bryant (synthesizer), Alvin Curran (trumpet, percussion), Frederick Rzewski (amplified percussion, singing), Jon Phetteplace (amplified cello). Powerful, historic noise and the first easily available MEV music on CD. Also comes with a Bryant solo synth wig-out piece at the end. CDs come in regular jewel cases, and endearingly primitive xerox graphics; essential stuff to say the least.

MUSICA ELETTRONICA VIVA [MEV: ALLAN BRYANT/ALVIN CURRAN /FREDERIC RZEWSKI/JOHN PHETTTEPLACE] - Rome Cansrt (IRML 04; USA) The original MEV (Allan Bryant, Alvin Curran, Frederic Rzewski, Jon Phetteplace), recorded in the spring of 1968 in Rome. "Vault find recordings of a MEV concert from Spring of 1968, featuring the original lineup of Allan Bryant (synthesizers), Alvin Curran (percussion, trumpet), Frederic Rzewski (percussion), and Jon Phetteplace (cello, percussion). Booklet reprints prime Bryant rants on church/state. You really can't find more convincing MEV recordings than this, excellent field-scrape with low-frequency peaks & valleys (incorrect tape speed during mastering process? You be the judge) and solemn, sub-aqueous anti-gloss tones... Excellent." -- Hrvatski.

SONDE - En Concert (Oral 021; Canada) "This CD is the re-edition of an LP made by Music Gallery Editions in 1978. It is (still) dedicated to the composer Mario Bertoncini who was the band main inspiration at the start for Sonde, a Quebec band active from 1976 to 1986. For most of the tracks in this recording the band was Andrew Culver, Keith Daniel, Charles de Mestral, Pierre Dostie, Chris Howard and Linda Pavelka. The notes on the back of the original cover mentioned: 'Live concert improvisations. Some of the pieces are played on new sound sources designed and constructed by members of the group. Others use traditional sources in a new context. Occasional use of electronic sound modification techniques.'"
CD $16

SONDE - En Ondes (Oral 016; Canada) Another set of classic archival recordings on this label, a la their previous Monotron CDs; the material on this is released fort he first time. "Sonde is a group of Montreal electroacoustic composers and performers. Their compositions were generally conceived for live performance on original sound sculptures. Through meditative improvisation, the group's aim was to produce new music with sounds revealed by electroacoustic amplification and transformation. Very active from 1976 to 1986, the members of the group included Andrew Culver, Charles de Mestral, Pierre Dostie, Chris Howard, Robin Minard, Michael O'Neill and Linda Pavelka. This CD is the second release ever of Sonde, the previous one being Sonde en Concert, edited in 1978 by Music Gallery Editions. This CD is thus quite important, bringing to light part of the group's archives. Optimized with today's sound tools, all these recordings deal with waves of different kinds, sound waves, of course, but also organic and brain waves. The live concert recordings of these pieces, with the exception of 'Acier Bien Trempe (electronique),' were broadcast by CBC-Montreal approximately in 1984 at the request of the producer Gilles Poirier, hence another of the meanings of the expression, En Ondes."

FROM THE ITALIAN 'GET BACK' REISSUE LABELÉ

MILES DAVIS QUINTET With JOHN COLTRANE - Live (Get Back 2029;Italy) "Recorded shortly prior to Davis' magnum opus, the best-selling jazz record of all time, Kind Of Blue and featuring the musicians from that seminal session, making it one of the best quintets of all time: John Coltrane (tenor sax), Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums). Featuring 'So What,' often cited as one of Davis' best works, and indeed one of the best in jazz, along with inspired versions of Monk's classic 'Round Midnight' and Dorsey's 'On Green Dolphin Street.' Recorded live in 1958."
CD $16

ERIC DOLPHY QUINTET Featuring HERBIE HANCOCK - Gaslight Inn, October 7th 1962 (Get Back 2027; Italy) A 1962 broadcast originating from the Gaslight Inn in New York Ciry is the source for this live Italian bootleg. Eric Dolphy leads a pickup group with Herbie Hancock and Richard Davis, along with drummer Edgar Bateman and trumpeter and flugelhornist Ed Armour [and Joe Carrol vocals on one cut]. Dolphy is heard almost exclusively on alto sax, though he does get in a few typically adventurous solos. The leader's memorable flute makes the nearly twelve and a half minute "Left Alone" the most valuable track. There are also performances of his originals "Miss Ann" and "G.W." Singer Joe Carroll dominates a rather forgettable bluesy treatment "Oh, Lady be Good!" in which Dolphy is only featured briefly on bass clarinet. The broadcast is faded with DJ Alan Grant's voice-over on top of an incomplete rendition of Dolphy's "245."

CHARLES MINGUS QUINTET With CAT ANDERSON - Meets Cat Anderson (Get Back 2030; USA) "One of the most important figures in American jazz, Charles Mingus spent most of his career at the forefront of the avant-garde. This album, recorded in 1972 in Berlin with a superlative Cat Anderson on trumpet during a period of extensive touring, was made during a very productive time in Mingus' life. He had spent the previous year teaching music and his autobiography Beneath The Underdog had just been published. In 1972, he also re-signed with Columbia Records and his music was now performed frequently by ballet companies, including Alvin Ailey, who choreographed 'The Mingus Dances' during a 1972 collaboration with the Robert Joffrey Ballet Company. Mingus continued playing music and touring until 1977 when he was diagnosed with a rare nerve disease, Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis. He died two years later, in 1979, at the age of 56. Featuring Joseph Gardner (trumpet), Hamiet Bluett (reeds), John Forster (piano), Roy Brooks (drums) and Cat Anderson (trumpet)."

BILL EVANS - Time Remembered (Get Back 2031; USA) "When pianist Bill Evans arrived on the jazz scene in the late '50s, his unusually quiet and introspective style of playing made him an anomaly in his field. He has since become one of the most influential jazz pianists of all time and is credited with having revolutionized the dynamics of the jazz trio. This unique album comes from a prolific period in Evans' career and gives fans a glimpse at two significant Evans-led trios. Side B was recorded in France in February 1965 and features Chuck Israel on bass and Larry Bunker on drums while side A was recorded at the Pescara Festival in Italy in 1969 and features Eddie Gomez on bass and Marty Morell on drums."
CD $16

STAN GETZ QUARTET - Baubles, Bangles and Beads (Get Back 2032; USA) "Stan Getz is considered one of the greatest tenor saxophone players of all time, known as 'The Sound' because of his warm, lyrical tone. In 1961, after a period abroad, Getz returned to the USA and soon became a central figure in bossa nova. In 1962, Getz recorded the hit record Jazz Samba, with Charlie Byrd who had just returned from a tour of Brazil. Getz also won a Grammy for 'Best Jazz Performance' in 1963. He then recorded 'The Girl from Ipanema' with Jobim, Joao Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto and not only did it win him another Grammy, but it also became one of the best-known Latin jazz pieces ever recorded. Side A of this album was recorded shortly after Getz's return to the USA, at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1961, and features Steve Kuhn on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums, while side B was recorded live in Berlin in 1966, and features Gary Burton on vibraphone, Chuck Israel on bass and Roy Haynes on drums."

MICHAEL GARRICK With DAVE GREEN/COLIN BARNES - Moonscape [LP version] (Trunk 022; UK) Originally privately pressed in 1964 in an edition of just 99 copies, Moonscape is possibly the most rare, most desirable and certainly most valuable modern British jazz record ever made. One of the super-scarce 10" originals could cost you L1500-L 2000 ($4000!!!) in mint condition. This is the first time Moonscape has had a proper release, and the first time it has been available on CD. Recorded in London in 1964, Moonscape is pianist and modern British jazz legend Michael Garrick's first album. Until now, and for 99 obvious reasons, very few people have ever heard this stunning lunar jazz. As interest in modern British jazz and Michael Garrick has increased over the last decade, this recording has gained almost mythical status, with possibly only two copies coming to market in that time. Moonscape is a solid keystone in the development of Britain's jazz sound, with a slightly floaty, drifting essence to the music, and an early British first foray into "The New Thing" -- the free jazz sound, even though the steps here are tentative and a touch naive. Highlights on such a short album are frequent, and current Trunk favorites include the awesome and blissfully sad "Sketches Of Israel," and the complex 6/8 trip "Man Have You Ever Heard." This is British modern jazz at its very best. Even though the space race had not really begun by 1964, and man was still a full five years away from a moonwalk, Garrick was no doubt onto something here, his prescient view of sound, jazz and space predating the rush of international cosmic jazz that punctuated the late 1960s and early 1970s. So, welcome at last to Moonscape, and thank heavens there are more than 99 copies this time around. LP $16

CAETANO VELOSO - Caetano Veloso (Lilith 131; Russian Federation) "Originally released in 1968, Caetano Veloso's debut album did for Brazilian music what the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's did for rock & roll, giving birth to the soon-to-be tropicalia movement, which fused Brazilian music with pop, psychedelia and social awareness (and Veloso's leftist politics actually earned him a stint in jail in 1968 for 'anti-government activity'). Veloso, nonetheless went on to become one of the most popular and influential Brazilian musicians of all time. Includes the genre-defining classics 'Clarice' and 'Soy Loco Por T“, AmŽrica,' 'Superbacana,' 'Tropicalia' and 'Alegria, Alegria.'"

THE LITTER - Distortions (Arf! Arf! 77; USA) "Christened after the buzzing guitar sounds emblazoned on each cut, The Litter's Distortions album from 1967 is as much a cornerstone of any '60s punk collection as Here Are the Sonics!!! or Black Monk Time. Kicking off with the smack-you-in-the-face fuzz of the all-time classic 'Action Woman,' the non-stop raving album cuts up British Invasion covers like fellow Minnesotan Paul Bunyan hacking trees and scorches them in a bonfire that climaxes with a fierce rendering of 'I'm A Man.' Your collection already has a space reserved for this remastered reissue of Distortions graced by a version of 'Hey Joe' from the same sessions and six bonus cuts recorded live at the Electric Theater in 1968."
CD $14

THE LITTER - $100 Fine (Arf! Arf! 78; USA) "Once the distortion has given your speakers a workout, you'll also want to put on our reissue of the psychedelic $100 Fine for the complete picture. Featuring the secret-agent aura of '(Under the Screaming Double) Eagle' and a Vanilla Fudged extension of 'She's Not There,' the 1968 opus shines in a dayglo red, white, yellow, and aqua hue that reflects The Litter's expanded musical horizon. And speaking of expansion, we've thrown on enough bonus cuts to double the length of the original album. Both releases include unseen photos and extensive historical essays by Goldmine/Ugly Things scribe Doug Sheppard."

6 FEET UNDER - In Retrospect 1969-70 (Arf! Arf! 74; USA) "Formed in 1966 out of the ashes of the Marc 5 and Sonix, this Colonia, NJ ensemble captured the changing times and sociological upheaval of the pre-Woodstock nation. Like the Jefferson Airplane, Neighb'rhood Childr'n and United States Of America, 6 Feet Under was blessed with a dynamic diva who soared amidst searing fuzz leads, swirling organ chords, and gifted songwriting with prophetic lyrics. This 78-minute CD documents the underground '60s counter-cultural aesthetic in full bloom."

TANGELA TRICOLI - Jet Lady (Arf! Arf! 96; USA) 2004 reissue in Arf! Arf!'s Incredibly Strange Music reissue series. "In 1982, Hollywood native Tangela Tricoli felt divine inspiration to record an album's worth of offbeat original songs. Two decades later, Jet Lady has become a bona fide music pillar in the pantheon of Outsider music and a highly coveted desert island disc for those sailing the eighth sea. Musically, Tangela's growing reputation among Outsider aficionados is in the ozone with Lucia Pamela, the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and the Shaggs. Paradoxically this left/right brain individual is also the top ranked female pilot for the world's largest airline and the first woman to be licensed to fly a Boeing 747 jumbo jet. Tangela has also improved Einstein's Theory of Relativity (!) and a treatise explaining the details is forthcoming. Her song 'Stinky Poodle' (which appeared on the 2003 Arf Arf compilation Only In America-Vol 2) inspired a recent 'Zippy the Pinhead' comic strip. Some even contend that her offbeat persona has provided inspiration for Lisa Kudrow's character, Phoebe, in the TV sitcom 'Friends' and the song 'Smelly Cat' is derivative of Tangela's tune. That claim is credible since she produced a surreal syndicated talk show that ran in Los Angeles for 4 years in the early '80s. This 17-track reissue contains her eccentric album, alternate versions, bonus tracks, and a 2003 remake of 'Stinky Poodle' that features her extended family. The massive 40-page booklet is overflowing with photos, a foreword by Irwin Chusid (author of Songs in The Key Of Z: The Curious Universe of Outsider Music), plus an extensive interview by Erik Lindgren. In addition, the CD includes a full hour of quick time video with vintage highlights from her irreverent talk show, footage of Tangela 'unplugged,' plus four TV commercials when she ran for Mayor of LA."
CD $14
