NEW RELEASES ON FMR [FUTURE MUSIC RECORDINGS]:
FREEBEAT [TONY BIANCO/JON WILKINSON] With ELTON DEAN - Northern Lights (FMR 182; UK) Featuring Elton Dean on alto sax & saxello, Jon Wilkinson on electric guitar and Tony Bianco on drums, piano, bass synth & construction. The late Elton Dean remains the quintessential Canterbury sax hero, playing his magical reeds on the seminal recordings of Soft Machine and the Keith Tippett Group, as well as his own great groups like Just Us, Ninesense and finally Soft Machine Legacy. His death earlier this year leaves a big hole in the beloved Canterbury Collective Scene. Thanks to labels like Cuneiform, Slam, Moonjune, HUX & FMR, for continuing to release diverse discs from Elton Dean and his many projects.
This disc was put together by American-born, British-based drummer Tony Bianco, who has worked with Paul Dunmall and Dave Liebman in the past. Tony has been working on the Freebeat concept since living in Berlin and has created his own long bass loops as the center for this music, adding drums & keyboards, before Elton Dean and guitarist, Jon Wilkinson added their parts and solos. Beginning with "Sideway Dreams", Tony's cerebral, repeating bass synth and drums line has a great, hypnotic groove. As Jon plays dark, dreamy chords, Elton's distinctive alto sax plays a sly, slow solo with a slight bit of echo added as tasty spice. On "Ghost", Tony's nervous, uptempo, oddly funky bass-line inspires Elton to stretch his notes out and take a long, story-like solo, as Jon's also takes a long, evil guitar solo, bending barbed chords until they scream in the distance. Elton almost sounds like he is playing tenor on "Pelham Parkway", his tone is even deeper than usual. Nice to hear that sly saxello sound on "Northern Lights", wjhich spins along quickly, pushing Elton to play spiraling layers of lines. Yeah! "El Che" has a dark undercurrent and more great, passionate soloing from Elton's alto. Although, 'Northern Lights' is much different than anything else we've heard from Elton Dean & Co., it is another off gem to savor. - BLG

TREVOR WATTS DRUM ORCHESTRA - Burundi Monday (FMR 198; UK) This historic live date was recorded at the 100 Club in London in 1983 and features Trevor Watts on soprano & alto saxes, Peter Knight on violin, Ernest Mothle on bass, Mmadi Kamara & Nana Tsiboe on African percussion and Liam Genockey on drums. Emerging from the ashes of Trevor Watts' previous band, Amalgam, which included drummer Liam Genockey, this is the beginning of what would become Trevor's next longtime band, The Moire Music Orchestra. Violinist, Peter Knight, and drummer Liam, were both members of Steeleye Span and South African bassist, Ernest Mothe, work with members of the Brotherhood of Breath.
This wonderfully spirited sextet play two long works, clocking in at about 50 minutes in total. The title track, "Burundi Monday", starts with a great triple percussion and bass groove. Trevor starts his long and joyous soprano solo with Peter's violin weaving in the background, often the both having a dialogue with each other. All three drummers lock into this mesmerizing, pounding groove that moves in waves and feels like a tribal dance ceremony. Ernest's propulsive acoustic bass provides a perfect counterpoint to the layers of spinning percussion. When Trevor switches to alto sax, he continues to tell a long story as he solos with his most expressive playing. This piece is a 35-minute joyride from beginning to the end. Trevor sounds as if he playing both saxes at the same time on "Double Up", playing bent harmonies with himself as Peter answers his call with some feisty electric violin, taking a powerful solo. Sound quality here is good but not great, yet the spirit is just right. A joyous disc throughout. - BLG

ENJAMBRE ACUSTICO URUKUNGOLO [TREVOR WATTS/GIBRAN CERVANTES/JAMIE HARRIS] - Mutuality (FMR 197; UK) This extraordinary trio feature Trevor watts on alto & soprano sax, Giran Cervantes on urukungalo and Jamie Harris on congas & percussion. Don't be surprised if you haven't heard of a "urukungolo" before, since it was Mexican-born Gibran Cervantes, that invented it. The urukungolo is a large wooden frame with differently tuned berimbaus suspended on it. Sort of like a large hammered dulcimer. Trevor Watts has been working with this Mexican percussionist for the past few years, as well as touring in a duo with British conga player, Jamie Harris. Trevor & Jamie have a wonderful duo disc out on Hi 4-Head which came out recently as played a great set at CB's last year.
'Mutuality' opens with Gibran's "5/7", which features the shimmering sounds of Mr. Cervantes' giant hammered dulcimer-like instrument, Jamie's somber conga groove and Trevor's impassioned alto sax playing. On "Mirror", Gibran plays this great, hypnotic repeating bass-like line on his as Trevor takes a sly, mysterious soprano solo with Jamie slowly adding his conga punctuation. Completely enchanting. Those in the know will remember Trevor's "3 Part Invention" from that recent duo disc with Jamie. It is also done here and is no less sublime with some excellent alto playing and conga grooving. I dig the way Gibran's dancing dulcimer, Jamie's congas and Trevor's snake-charming soprano weave together in a cosmic haze on "Recharge". The grand conclusion occurs on "Tribal", a 14 1/2 minute epic that will leave you breathless. Building from solo soprano, to a duo with the congas to a trio with the urukungolo. An incredible piece. Again, FMR leaves us with a gem, too amazing to ignore. - BLG

BADAL ROY/GEOFF WARREN/MARCELLO SEBASTIANI - Frammenti D'Anima (FMR 202; UK) This sublime trio features Badal Roy on tables & percussion, Geoff Warren on concert & alto flutes and Marcello Sebastiani on double bass. Tabla virtuoso, Badal Roy, has worked with many giants of jazz like Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Dave Liebman and Perry Robinson. This fine disc brings together three musicians from varied cultures and traditions. Badal Roy is originally from India, yet now resides in NJ. Geoff Warren is from England and Marcello Sebastiani is from Italy, where this disc was recorded. This trio has been playing together for six years previous to this recording. "Courante" opens with an infectious groove, a bass-line that I impossible to forget, superb flute and tables dancing together. This disc is immensely well recorded and perfectly recorded, so the trio sounds as if they are one spirit in flight. Their contrabassist, Marcello, has a warm, and inviting tone that put him amongst the best of all bassist. On "L'ira Di Krishna", Badal plays a tabla groove that is so funky it feels like he wants to get everyone up and dancing. Geoff takes one of the best flute solos ever and Marcello also locks into the groove with his dynamic bass, taking an incredible solo as well. I can't think of a more beautiful trio disc I've heard in a long while, three masters in perfect harmony with each other. - BLG

GUNTER HAMPEL MUSIC + DANCE COMPANY - Jungbrunnen: Fountain Of Youth [DVD + CD set] (Birth 060602; Germany) Featuring Gunter Hampel on bass clarinet, flute & vibes, Johannes Schleirmacher on tenor sax, Bernd Oezsevim on drums and Prince Alegs-Hichem - dance. This CD & DVD set was recorded liveduring the Interplay Festival in Berlin on June 6th of 2006 at the Academy of The Arts. When the video starts the group is playing in a hallway with people walking past, some checking them out and others just walking by. They walk down the aisle of a theatre improvising on a rhythm groove, the percussionist playing a hand drum, both Gunter & Johannes playing reeds as two dancers march in front. They make their way up onto the stage and the performance continues. Prince Alegs is a most expressive dancer and he and another dancer do a fine job of matching the music with their limber bodies. Soon Gunter switches to vibes and the trio takes off for the stratosphere, swirling freely together. All of this is captured with one hand-held camera, yet it works as the lone camera-person knows exactly where to shoot. When Gunter takes a nice unaccompanied vibes solo, Prince takes a fine slow motion dance solo. When Gunter switches to flute, the trio take off for quieter space until they get back into the next groove. Both dancers do a swell job of capturing the spirit of this music, feeding it back and forth with the musicians. If you wish to not check out the visuals, you could just listen to the CD from this set. Either way, both are well done, musically and visually. Is it my imagination, or does Gunter Hampel look younger every time I see him?!? - BLG

OLUYEMI THOMAS/KENN THOMAS/EUGENE WILSON IV/HOWARD BYRDSONG - Nigeria (Not Two 771; EEC) Featuring West Coast mystery man, Oluyemi Thomas on bass clarinet, musette & bells, Kenn Thomas on piano & el. piano, Eugene Wilson IV on electric bass and Howard Byrdsong on drums. This is a departure for our favorite Oakland-based reeds hero, Oluyemi, who most often records with his wife Ijeoma in Positive Knowledge. This disc was recorded in Ann Arbor, Michigan, possibly where these other musicians are from. Except for Oluyemi improv disc on Recorded, he rarely plays with musicians using electric instruments. It sounds as if Kenn Thomas is playing synth on this disc with the electric bass of Mr. Wilson. No matter, this is strong, spiritual and free/jazz played most creatively. Oluyemi's incredible bass clarinet speaks in tongues as he tells his long story with swirling electric piano, (fretless?) electric bass and drums around him. This is a studio date with great well-balanced sound. The bassist is often pretty amazing spiraling lines of notes, matching the sheets that Oluyemi and the pianist unleash in waves. It is refreshing when the quartet move into a McCoy-like modal groove near the end of the first piece. When Oluyemi switches to musette, a snake-charming double reed, the rest of the quartet follow him freer terrain and they all ascend and soar together. Oluyemi always finds kindred spirits whenever he goes, so here too he has put together a great like-minded quartet that can follow him anywhere as well as help navigate the rapids with inspired results. Free and focused and pretty phenomenal. - BLG

TAMIO SHIRASHI/SEAN MEEHAN - Annual Summer Concerts [LP only] (GD Stereo/Old Gold; USA) Featuring Tamio Shirashi on alto sax & Sean Meehan on percussion. Tamio Shirashi is a legendary saxist, who has been known to play high notes on his sax that often make dogs squeal and humans freak out. No less committed is percussionist Sean Meehan, who often concentrates on selective micronotes for his one snare drum or singular cymbal. This dynamic duo has been doing free summer concerts outdoors at different locations since 2000. Geoff Dugan has been recording this duo since 2001, their first collaboration was released as one-sided LP called 'In the City'.
This impressive two-sided platter was recorded in two locations, under the Manhattan Bridge and in the municipal parking garage at the 79th St. Boat Basin. It was recorded on binaural mics and has a most impressive sound and dynamic range. Tamio's sax squeals erupt from an ocean of wind-like sounds as Sean's equally high-pitched bowed percussion weaves another mutated drone somewhere underneath. Tamio sounds like John Zorn, when Zorn concentrates on those scary high-pitched squeaks, although I believe Tamio has been playing this way for just as long. It sounds as if we are in a wind tunnel or that a jet is taking off next to us in one segment. Very intense. I dig the way Tamio just concentrates on those barbed high notes, twisting them slightly and turning them into something else. The binaural mic makes it sound like we are sitting inside of the scene we are observing with our ears. It is more true to life and scary in the way that it sounds more than real. Sean's unique sounds are also captured well with his bent drones adding a more-subtle undercurrent. Tamio seems to moving slowly in the distance and as his sound dances like a flame flickering. What I dig the most about this is that both players make similar textured sounds, so it is difficult to tell them apart at times. This album was pressed on 180 gram vinyl and the complete package is both machine and hand made. An obvious labor of love from all parties involved. - BLG

MAMA KANGAROOS [V.A.] - Philly Women Sing Captain Beefheart (Genus 2; USA) I am always skeptical about compilations, since so few are consistently good and they rarely sell many copies. I was surprised to get this one in the mail a couple of months ago, since I had only heard of one of the twenty artists listed here, Essra Mohawk, an obscure sorta legend and associate of Frank Zappa. We surprised me even more is that this comp is pretty consistently great. As a Captain Beefheart fan-addict, like many of the folks who read this newsletter, I was delighted to hear this very diverse collection of Beefheart covers. What is interesting about this collection is that none of these versions are quite like the originals, each one is a departure and each one still has some of that unique Beefheart essence or weirdness at the center. There are some twenty tracks here and this disc is over 70-minutes long, so this is like a journey through a twisted mirror version of Beefheart-land. There are way too many highlights here, but I will mention a few. Winterbrief's take on "The Past Sure is Tense" has that fresh new wave vibe, with cool static guitar and chirping synth. Global Transmission do a soulful, sexy-voiced version of "The Witch Doctor Life". Bug Mess Orchestra, who do "Run Paint Run Run", remind me of Steve Bernstein's Millennial Territory Orchestra blended with the current version of Sex Mob. Voices of Africa perform a tribal version of "Abba Zabba" with some fine electric sitar, mandolin, an entire chorus of voices and layers of percussion. Fay Davis & Skip Heller do a bluesy version of "Her Eyes are a Blue Million Miles", with some strong clarinet and strings. It is certainly odd to hear a country-ish version of "My Head is My Only House", but this also works well. Mia Johnson sounds like she Bonnie Raitt backed by Little Feat, when Lowell George was still playing that mighty slide guitar. Captain Beefheart's music, lyrics and voice were unique, in a class of their own. Thus giving this a comp an odd a unique perspective and sound. There are practically no bad cuts here, although "I'm Glad", that sort of doowop song on 'Safe as Milk', is about as close to a normal song that we get here. Essra Mohawk does an especially steamy, riveting version of "Safe as Milk" with a free midsection. What is most fascinating is that there is such consistency between all of the players involved. Three cheers for producer, Mike Willers, who did an amazing job of gathering an array of mostly little known talent and giving them a chance to prove themselves, thus coming up with a surprising box of gems.

RICHIE MILETIC - Outside Scenic (self-produced) Featuring Richie Miletic on vocals, acoustic guitar & songs, Jon Widgren on pedal steel, Tien Jou Wang on erhu (Chinese violin), Dave Mooney on guitar & Eivind Opsvik on upright bass. It is pretty rare when I review a CD of bluegrass or country music in these pages, but Richie left these discs with us and I got to admit that both Patrick (the new guy here at DMG) and me really like this disc. I know none of the folks on this disc, except for local jazz bassist, Eivind Opsvik. Richie has charming voice, slightly twangy, yet most endearing. What is most unexpected is the presence of an erhu, a Chinese violin that one rarely hears anywhere outside of Eastern music. Richie also writes songs that are modern, lyrically clever, yet the arrangements are pretty old fashioned. Both the erhu player (Tien Jou Wang) and/or the pedal steel player (Jon Widgren) are featured on most of these songs and sound great caressing Richie's voice and words. He does a fine western swing thing on "Tiki Hut", with some tasty guitar from Davey Mooney, as well as some snazzy pedal steel. Just quirky enough to be considered cool by those who don't care about outward appearances. In a more perfect world, Bill Frisell, would be championing this guy and he might even end up on Nonesuch. A consolation prize could be a guest vocal on the next Millennial Territory Band CD. - BLG

LLOYD PETERSON - Music And The Creative Spirit: Innovators In Jazz, Improvisation, and The Avant-Garde [Book] (Scarecrow Press; USA) Through personal interviews, artists such as DEREK BAILEY, KEN VANDERMARK, PAT METHENY, PETER BROTZMANN, TIM BERNE, JOSHUA REDMAN, MARILYN CRISPELL, HAMID DRAKE, REGINA CARTER, WILLIAM PARKER, IKUE MORI, FRED ANDERSON, WADADA LEO SMITH, DAVID S WARE, DAVE HOLLAND, BILL FRISELL, DAVE DOUGLAS, MYRA MELFORD, OTOMO YOSHIHIDE, GEORGE LEWIS, JOEY BARON, EVAN PARKER, SUSIE IBARRA, DAVID MURRAY, STEVE LACY, and JOHN ZORN - to name just some of the 41 artist interview chapters - offer clear, frank discussions about music, creativity, work, society, culture, current events, and more.
"This is a most extraordinary book! Lloyd Peterson conducts mostly short interviews with some 41 important musicians. Many are from the downtown & Chicago scene, some from Europe, as well as some bigger [industry] names. He asks a number of the same questions time and again, but gets different responses from each musician, depending on their personal experiences. He often asks what inspires them, how would they describe their music to a novice, is it important to play with other musicians from different backgrounds, what is your vision for the future. The discussion of the word "jazz" is often met with heated response, since that word is used so divisively by journalists and folks who love to argue about who owns or what is jazz. He continues to bring up a quote from Cecil Taylor who mentions that great music is more about magic than logic and that master musicians deal with better with the "love " in their art, than the discipline. Many of these interviews were done right after the stolen re-election of George Bush, so there is quite a bit of political discussion dealt with as well. I found all of the interviews to be illuminating and incisive, revealing a great deal about most of these musicians, many of whom I respect anyway. I had to read a number of the chapters a few times, since there was so many interesting points these musicians made. Bravo to Lloyd Peterson for his hard work and the great outcome." - BLG

GEOFF FARINA/LUTHER GRAY/NATE McBRIDE - Out Trios Volume Four: Almanac (Atavistic 171; USA) Featuring Geoff Farina on guitar, Nate McBride on acoustic bass and Luther Gray on drums. This fine rhythm team has worked with both Joe Morris and Ken Vandermark, in different combinations and perhaps never at the same time. I don't know this Geoff Farina fellow, but Nate McBride plays some amazing bass on that new Bridge 61 project with Ken Vandermark and I've seen Luther Gray play great drums with Joe Morris on a number of occasions. This is a strong, focused improv trio that starts in the slow-burn vibe before Geoff launches into some deep, dark, rock-like guitar chords and the trio takes off. I dig the triumphant spirit of "Hello Tamarat, Goodbye", which is closer to instrumental post/rock than anything else. What is interesting about this disc is that it is more about moods, shapes, shadows and textures. Often the bass and drums begin these pieces and establish a direction together, before Geoff comes in to join the fray. The waters become more turbulent whenever Geoff starts strumming and whips up the excitement level higher. I like when they lay back on "Heart of Mica" and deals with suspense and space, Geoff just bending the occasional note and letting it hang in the air. A most interesting disc that is not quite like anything else I've heard. - BLG
CD $15
BOXHEAD ENSEMBLE - Nocturnes (Atavistic 174; USA) The Boxhead Ensemble returns with their 3rd proper studio album since the inception of the DUTCH HARBOR project in 1997. The collective's leader Michael Krassner (guitar, organ, manipulations) joins forces with Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello & harmonica), Frank Rosaly (drums) and Jacob Kolar (prepared piano). Fred Lonberg-Holm is the latest member of the Vandermark 5 and one of the busiest cellists in Chicago nowadays. Frank Rosaly plays some explosive drums with Rob Mazurek's Mandarin Movie. 'Nocturnes' is a stunning, calm, meditative, cosmic, display of drones. Each piece features a different combination of instruments, although most of it is sparse overall. "Nocturne 3" features quietly strummed electric guitar and cello, similar to Tom Verlaine's spacious guitar sounds. I get the feeling that this music is more about texture and evoking spirits and not about trying to figure out what is going on. Not to listen too close, but to use as thoughtful environmental sounds. This reminds me of Radian at times and other times like selective soundtrack music, evoking haunting spirits. Fred's fine cello stands out at times, never sounding any better of more lyrical than here. - BLG

ATSUYA OKUDA - Bamboo Zen (Self Released; USA) [comes in clear jewel case without printed matter] "I produced this recording a couple of weeks ago at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, Ca. Okuda is the most unusual shakuhachi player living in Japan today. The closet person that you compare him to is the late and great Wadazumidoso. The instruments used by both players are shakuhachi more like the original form of the instrument; with a raw unfinished interior, and often of a much larger size deemed: hotchiku. Okuda is much more concerned with IMPROVISATION and SOUND than all the rest of the mainstream shakuhachi players in Japan put together. His sonic sensibility and taste is much more like that of a free improviser than of a classical musician of any particular traditional school. On this recording engineer Stephen Hart and I managed to capture Okuda at a peak performance moment. We experimented a lot with different microphone setups and devised a system that yielded the best recording of a shakuhachi that my ears have ever heard. While Okuda plays traditional pieces here, what he does with them is quite OUT and quite wild, in a quiet Zen way. I get the feeling that Okuda could knock over a building with his shakuhachi, if he wanted to. It's kind of like a magical, super power thing. Like Evan Parker's MONOCEROS or THE SNAKE DECIDES, this is a landmark recording of a solo wind instrument. I felt that I was very, very fortunate to be involved here. Okuda printed up some professionally duplicated CD-R's to sell at his concerts in the past few weeks. That is what DMG is making available here for you; in a limited quality. There are plans to make manufactured CDs of this later this year, but, for now, you can have this version at an attractive price." - Henry Kaiser

BENJAMIN THIGPEN - Human For Scale (EMF 152; USA) This multifaceted CD of Benjamin Thigpen's music is an essay in a great diversity of sensitive sound. But in its evocations, the music is also about more than sound. For Thigpen, music is a medium that speaks about ideas, thoughts, activities, scenes, images, conflicts. His music emerges from his thoughts on time and his feelings for poetry.
The contents include: 'step, under' (1998) "is an exploration of the polyphony and heterophony of time." Of 'not even the rain' (2000), he writes: "What it's about. The vast energy concealed within any object, the infinite mystery beyond every surface. Glimpsing the beyond ..." back into chaos, like diving bells." As a note to 'h' (1995), he writes: "Why is it called h. A whole word would have been too much, said too much. Even most letters have too many associations, too many friends gathering around them, hovering and chattering. Only h is sufficiently quiet ..." 'dust' (1996) "is otherwise related to the shifting forms of smoke; the wind; driven snow in the headlights of a speeding car; and winter streetlights shining through the branches of leafless trees." As an afterthought, he quotes Paul Celan: "there are still songs to sing beyond mankind."

VOX EX MACHINA [V.A. curated by JAAP BLONK] - Leonardo Music Journal 15 (EMF 158; USA) [This CD, curated by Jaap Blonk, accompanies Leonardo Music Journal 15, which is not included here]. The interplay of the semantic content of a text and the melodic possibilities of the voice have made "song" the world's most common musical form, and technology-driven vocal innovations have often triggered the emergence of new musical genres (rap being the most conspicuous example). Between the much touted "abstractness" and "universality" of music and the seductive specificity of words there exists a poignant and powerful lacuna. Curated by Jaap Blonk, a vocal artist of extraordinary talent and virtuosity, this CD contains music based on vocal gyrations, amazing timbres, and many moods, all mixed in with technology, all of it making the point that the human voice is truly a remarkable instrument.
Artists include: Tomomi Adachi, Americo Jorge M. Rodrigues, Christian Bok, Sprechakte X/Treme, Vincent Barras and Jacques Demierre, Ricardo Dal Farra, Jelle Meander, Jorg Piringer, Kenneth Goldsmith, Julien Ottavi, Daniel Goode, Anne-James Chaton, and Lasse Marhaug.

GEORGE ANTHEIL - Bad Boy Made Good [2 DVD set] (Antheil/EMF 60; USA) The Revival of George Antheil's 1924 Ballet Mechanique. A film by Ron Frank and Paul D. Lehrman. "In the Roaring '20s, George Antheil's raucous piano recitals and futuristic compositions were creating scandals and riots all over Europe. Ten years later, Antheil was back home, broke and forgotten. His magnum opus, the 'Ballet Mechanique,' so technologically ahead of its time that it could never be performed the way we conceived it, was lost. Forty years after the composer's death, as the 20th century ended, it could finally be heard. This film by Ron Frank and Paul D. Lehrman is about George Antheil and his famous controversial piece 'Ballet Mecanique.' This 2 DVD set includes the award-winning documentary shown on PBS plus extended interviews with friends of Antheil featured in the film, the complete premiere concert performance of the original orchestration of 'Ballet Mecanique,' and the 1925 Leger/Murphy film 'Ballet Mecanique' with the newly-realized 16-player-piano version of Antheil's score." Narrated by Tony Kahn, Music by George Antheil, Paul Lehrman, Erik Satie, and Igor Stravinsky. Feature length: 72 minutes. Extras length: 101 minutes. NTSC format.

LUIGI DALLAPICCOLA/GOFFREDO PETRASSI - Musica da Camera (mode 166; USA) "Luigi Dallapiccola and Goffredo Petrassi are often considered the 'Heavenly Twins' of 20th century music in Italy. While it is true that they were born in the same year (1904), and together provided the driving force for new Italian music, each composer has his own unmistakable musical and poetic identity. This CD, performed by Ensemble Dissonanzen, Naples' premier new music ensemble, alternates compositions by Petrassi and Dallapiccola, making for a study of contrasts and comparisons. Petrassi's 'Dialogo Angelico,' is an ethereal watercolor heralding the sound of his future music. It is imbued with a free flowing Stravinsky-like neomodality, serenely rhythmical and diatonic. 'Quaderno Musicale di Annalibera' features eleven perfectly-crafted miniatures, representing a minuscule amalgam of the Art of Fugue and the Musical Offering, with canons in the style of Bach and the Flemish school."

GERARD PAPE - Ascension to Purgatory (mode 167; USA) This is Pape's third monographic CD with Mode Records. Whereas his last Mode CD (Electro-acoustic Chamber Works, released in 1998) presented his ground breaking works of 1993-1996, this new CD presents a selection of his more recent pieces composed from 1998 to 2004.
The works are performed by world-class soloists and ensembles, including members of The Arditti Quartet and leading French new music performers.
Pape continues his fascination with composing with chaotic sound in Le Fleuve du Desir IV and Weaveworld Prologue, it is his new approach to composing with packets of granular time that predominates on this CD.
In La Naissance du Son, sound is born from pulsating rhythmic noise that gradually attains discernible timbre and pitch.
For Maurizio is the first piece in which Pape explores temporal flow in composition as deriving, not from fixed durations or steady beat, but rather as a consequence of composing continuously speeding up and slowing down scales of tempo pulsations - regulating the speed of pulsating/oscillating sound elements. This new approach to time is further enriched by the use of computer generated sequences of percussive sound that are mixed 'live' with a virtuoso part for percussion solo in the Ascension to Purgatory piece.

CHAYA CZERNOWIN - Pnima...ins Innere: Opera in 3 Acts [DVD] (mode 169; USA) PNIMA...INS INNERE is a psychological journey of a boy encountering his grandfather, a traumatized holocaust survivor. It takes the point of view of the children of the survivors, who cannot touch this horrible experience but are forced to encounter its constant but hidden presence. Pnima is more than a opera about the holocaust - it is a different kind of music theater. It is a non-verbal, non-narrative experience. No traditional libretto. No plot. No singers as actors. On stage are two actors who do not sing or speak, on the sides of the stage are the vocal
and instrumental soloists.
Commissioned for the Munich Biennale 2000, it was selected as "The best premiere of the yearaaaa' by Opernwelt, and won the Bayerischer Theatre Prize in 2000. The DVD captures the live Biennale event. It received more then 70 rave reviews from all over Europe.

TOD DOCKSTADER - Aerial Vol 3 (Sub Rosa 233; Belgium) This release is the third and last in the three-part Aerial series. Tod Dockstader is one of the all-time great figures in the world of musique concrEte composition, with his "organized sound" works from the 1960s being amongst the most radical ever conceived -- in league with Schaeffer, Henry, Stockhausen, and Varese. Aerial is a rare new work in the realm of shortwave radio, from one of America's most experimental composers. Volume 1 was released in March 2005 inside a slipcase. Volume 2 and 3 have been released separately and packaged in individual standard jewel cases that conveniently fit into the slipcase provided with Volume 1. Working from his interest in shortwave radio, Dockstader attempts to "play the radio," thus redefining this cultural medium as a musical instrument with the help of a computer and a good editing system. Out of the 580 mixes, he selected 90 "best" mixes -- eventually reduced to 59, which became representational of the distilled magic of the radio, as it elucidates the sounds between stations. Finally, in assembling the CDs, Dockstader allows each piece to flow into the next -- making a continuous journey to the end. Ghostly, ethereal, and irresistibly interesting-- like hearing secrets passed over airwaves.

SEBASTIAN MEISSNER/RAN SLAVIN/ERAN SACHS - Into the Void (Sub Rosa 215; Belgium) Into the Void is a reflection upon the history and the recent changes in the Krakovian neighborhood of Kazimierz. The center of this meditation is the seemingly contradictory development of the last few years, which shows the attempts to re-animate Jewish culture. This piece is an attempt to reverse the seasons from summer to winter in the 700-year-old Jewish district of Krakow. What struck Meissner at first sight, was the glaring contrast between the rich, the rise of the material culture and the seeming absence of real community exterminated during the Nazi era. Four months later, on June 26th 2003, at Krowoderska52 club in Krakow, Sebastian Meissner, Ran Slavin and Eran Sachs offered the final effects of their research in the form of a series of pieces. They carefully crafted crunchy steps, freezing wind, cracking ice and conversations into a mesmerizing film for the ears. The imaginative power of the music was reinforced by Slavin's video impressions -- equally apt in conjuring up desolate though meaningful digital environments referring to Nowa Huta -- the empty, large, defunct metal industry zone

THREADGILL & AIR REISSUES!!!
AN INTRO FOR THOSE OUT OF THE KNOW...
The jazz avant-garde has produced dozens of notable improvisers (not surprisingly, since improvisation is arguably the music's defining element) but relatively few great composers. Henry Threadgill is a member of that exclusive club. With his fellow Chicagoans Anthony Braxton and Muhal Richard Abrams, he's one of the most original jazz composers of his generation. Threadgill's art transcends stylistic boundaries. He embraces the world of music in its entirety, from ragtime to circus marches to classical to bop, free jazz, and beyond. Such might sound merely eclectic in the telling, but in truth, Threadgill always sounds like Threadgill. A given project might exploit a particular genre or odd instrumentation, but whatever the slant, it always bears its composer's inimitable personality. Threadgill is also an alto saxophonist of distinction; his dry, heavily articulated manner is a precursor to that of a younger Chicagoan, the alto saxophonist Steve Coleman (no coincidence, one would suspect).
ABOUT AIR:
Comprised originally of Henry Threadgill on reeds, bassist Fred Hopkins, and drummer Steve McCall, Air emphasized equality of roles by the instruments (without any clear-cut leader) and a smooth mixture of advanced arrangements and free improvisations. In 1971, Threadgill was asked to arrange some of Scott Joplin's songs for a production at Columbia College in Chicago. He teamed up with Hopkins and McCall as the trio REFLECTION. A few years later, in 1975, the musicians came together again as Air, touring Europe, Japan, and America and recording 11 records for such labels as Nessa, India Navigation, Black Saint, Novus, and Antilles. By far their most popular release was 1979's Air Lore, which found the group performing abstract versions of tunes by Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton. In 1982, when McCall returned to Chicago and was replaced by Pheeroan akLaff, the group changed its name to New Air. A year before their breakup in 1986, Andrew Cyrille took over the drum slot. All of the musicians (sadly, McCall who passed away in 1989, and Hopkins in 1999) went on to have very productive careers. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG
**AIR [HENRY THREADGILL/FRED HOPKINS/STEVE McCALL] - Air Song (self released CDR; USA) Air, the improvisational collective of Henry Threadgill on reeds, woodwinds, and lots of other stuff, bassist Fred Hopkins, and drummer/percussionist Steve McCall, was the first major group after the Art Ensemble to come out of Chicago. The feel of Air's sound is one where the collective improvises and creates without an individual soloist or group leader anchoring the proceedings. On the first two recordings, this debut outing in particular, this concept worked well. There are four long pieces here, all of them based on minimal themes with variations entering into the fray simultaneously and opening the door to a free for all that pays attention to both dynamics and texture. The interplay between the three members is almost always inventive, engaging, and full of warmth and humor. There is little excessive indulgence to be found on these improvisations, and the degree of musicianship with these men is off the chart. Communication in the new jazz often amounted to little more than cats trying to make one another louder. Air proved that the signal of development is in the listening and expressing oneself based on what has been played as a soloist and as part of the whole. A lovely and auspicious debut. ~ Thom Jurek, AMG

**AIR [HENRY THREADGILL/FRED HOPKINS/STEVE McCALL] - Air Raid (self released CDR; USA) The critical success of Air's debut album, Air Song, dictated both more of the same and a difference in approach on Air Raid. While there are only four tracks, just as on the first album, here they are broken up between two long pieces -- the title track and "Release," and two mid-length, seven-plus minute works, "Midnight Sun" and "Through a Keyhole Darkly." The concept of group improvisation was the same, but Henry Threadgill's compositional notions began to come through in his solos. He's a born leader and his charge-taking feels natural and wonderfully amorphous, though it reveals itself more often than not. The structure of soloing on "Release" is breathtaking in that it makes a case for the notion of an interval in free improvisation. Threadgill's use of the breath as a rhythmic technique here brings out the most adventurous side of Steve McCall's drumming. Likewise, his engagement with thematic variants creates new and wildly textured terrains for Fred Hopkins to articulate a vision of the bass as an instrument for song as well as rhythm, and one where depth and resonance offer a palette for group searching. Another fine effort. ~ Thom Jurek, AMG

**AIR [HENRY THREADGILL/FRED HOPKINS/STEVE McCALL] - 80 Degrees Below '82 (self released CDR; USA) This was Air's ninth LP and the final one featuring drummer Steve McCall. The avant-garde trio stretches out on three of the saxophonist's originals and Jelly Roll Morton's "Chicago Breakdown." This blues-oriented set is more accessible than many of Air's previous recordings without watering down the explorative nature of this always-interesting group. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

**HENRY THREADGILL & VERY VERY CIRCUS - Live at Koncepts (self released; USA) A live recording from the Koncepts Cultural Gallery in 1991, this album captures a typically diverse and enjoyable set by Threadgill's Very Very Circus ensemble, the tuba and guitar-driven band he led for several years in the late '80s and early '90s. The pieces range from the fine, hard-driving opener, "Next," with the leader's searing, bitter alto, to the quasi-rockish "Snakes Don't Do Suicide," all martial beats and fusion-inspired guitar, to his lugubrious ballads, all steamy and off-kilter. Those listeners unfamiliar with Threadgill's approach may find both his composing style and his instrumentation a bit baffling. The former matches bluesy, though often acerbic melodies with stop-and-start rhythms that do groove, just not in the ways that one might anticipate. His conjunction of low horns with dual guitars and percussion certainly creates a unique overall sound, one that lends itself to the march-like cadences he favors but also leads to a lushness not often encountered elsewhere. It makes for a thick, throbbing matrix over which Threadgill can soar and, like his ensemble, his own alto and flute work sounds like no one else's, a sharp blues-tinged sound with heady romantic overtones... Any Threadgill fan will want to hear this! ~ Brian Olewnick, AMG

Recorded with his current ensemble Zooid during the performance at the Engine 27 in New York City on September 12, 2003, this material is significant for two reasons, one being its limited release and second: It features Henry Threadgill on flutes (no alto saxophone here) and hubkaphone, a percussion instrument with eight vintage car hubcaps and three small gongs. Although he has already recorded hubkaphone back in the '70s on a few Air albums, this is actually the first time that the instrument's unique sound is being captured properly. For this particular performance the hubcaphone was pre-recorded, sometimes duplicated at the octave above or below, with no processing of the sound itself. It went through sixteen different speakers at different rates of speed thereby creating an unusual acoustic effect.
[The Hardedge label will be releasing Henry Threadgill's Zooid's new album, 'Out On Up' (cd only) in Summer 2006, which is the first studio recording of the group since 2001.]

SHAWN DAVID McMILLEN - Catfish (Tompkins Square 1721; USA) "Guitarist and composer Shawn David McMillen is a native of the East Texas town of Lake Jackson, known as the 'Cancer Capitol of America' due to its large concentration of chemical plants. In the early '90s, Shawn met Tom and Christina Carter (Charlambides) -- now considered early pioneers of the present avant-folk movement -- as well as Heather Leigh Murray. Heather and Shawn moved to Galveston where she attended Texas A & M/Galveston while 'working at an animal clinic, recording music constantly and having cataclysmic experiences on acid together at the beach.' Shawn and Heather recorded as Ash Castles on the Ghost Coast. Catfish is acoustic-based only because Shawn had no electric guitar at the time. Other instruments include autoharp, Roland keyboard, Indian goat bell, Indonesian gongs, bowed electric bass, African kalimba (thumb piano) and shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute). Cited influences at the time include American Indian lore, music from the Middle East and India, Phil Yost, Robbie Basho and Malachi Favors. A recent Wire review noted that Catfish 'shares the peculiar sense of temporal and topographical resonance that exemplifies the soporific, glazed music created by artists from Texas. Though their music references psychedelia (a notionally placeless aesthetic), there is something very specific about the manifestations of place and space in Texas psych...'."

SEAN SMITH/ADAM SNIDER/MATT BALDWIN - Berkeley Guitar (Tompkins Square 5252; USA) "Berkeley Guitar is a collection of new recordings by three of the Bay Area's finest young acoustic guitarists: Sean Smith, Adam Snider, and Matt Baldwin. The city of Berkeley and the acoustic guitar share a rich, decades-long history -- most notably as the '60s home base of Takoma Records, which released landmark recordings by John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Leo Kottke and many others. This history inspired three young guitarists from the Bay Area to create a document of the present-day guitar scene. The album was produced by Sean Smith and recorded and mastered at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Larry Kelp of Berkeley public radio station KPFA contributes liner notes, as does Ed Denson, co-founder of Takoma Records."

CHARLES GAYLE - Time Zones (Tompkins Square 2839; USA) "Time Zones is Charles Gayle's first solo piano album of all original compositions, and only the second solo piano recording of his career. Although he is known primarily as a fiery tenor saxophonist with a sound that blends the spirituality of John Coltrane with the free expression of Albert Ayler, his first instrument was the piano. Since putting his long and storied past as a homeless New York street musician behind him, and recording for the first time in the late 1980s, he has steadily integrated piano into his performances, leading AllAboutJazz.com reviewer Dennis Hollingsworth to declare, 'Charles Gayle is without question one of the most intriguing figures in modern jazz today. Like with his saxophone playing, Gayle uses the entire range of the piano. His style is highly personal, yet firmly grounded in the playing of past masters like Art Tatum and Bud Powell.'

A FEW HISTORIC RECORDINGS FOR THIS WEEK:
CHARLES BUKOWSKI/BARBET SCHROEDER, dir. - The Charles Bukowski Tapes [2 DVD set] (Barrel 09; USA) When Barbet Schroeder (More, General Idi Amin Dada, Single White Female) began work on the movie Barfly, he had no idea that it would be such a struggle. During the seven years it took him to complete the film, he turned his cameras on its screenwriter, poet and novelist Charles Bukowski.
"I couldn't stand the thought of not being able to share the extraordinary evenings we spent together," said Schroeder. "I finally brought in a small crew, friends of mine, with a high quality video set up. Whoever was the least drunk took control of the camera."
Bukowski, legendary for his drunken excess and frank observations on life, love, and survival, took no exception with Schroeder.
Barbet Schroeder recalls, "I had no idea of what I might do with the material, but I didn't want those evenings to be lost. As I don't like formal interviews, I tried to get him started on a topic and then keep from interrupting him. The result was often a monologue of three minutes or longer."
Schroeder eventually completed The Charles Bukowski Tapes, a four-hour long study of the man and the music of his words. "The ideal way to show this material was in short video-clips - a new style of film. Once I had screened it this way, it seemed twice as powerful."
"Fifty-two clips of Charles Bukowski ranting and musing comprise Barbet Shroeder's Charles Bukowski Tapes. It was, until now, a rarity that circulated amongst die-hard Bukowski fans, since the release of Shroeder's Bukowski-scripted feature, Barfly. This collection of monologues, ranging in topic from Bukowski's beef with God, to biographical tales of his life as an abused child, to his views on writing as a disciplinary craft, cover the gamut of Bukowski-typical topics, which can also be glimpsed in other Bukowski documentaries, such as Born Into This. But The Charles Bukowski Tapes are set apart by their sheer volume of candid author footage, in which Bukowski has drunkenly abandoned all camera-shyness to reveal, and revel in, his damage. In one chilling segment, Hank and Linda Lee sit on the couch and seriously discuss divorce, leaving the viewer feeling as if they've eavesdropped on a therapy session. In another, Hank takes us to his childhood home, to show us the bathroom, nicknamed "The Torture Chamber," where he was repeatedly whipped. The rawness of the tapes is refreshing but painful. This DVD package includes several segments in which Bukowski recites poems, as well as a booklet containing writing by Shroeder, an essay by Bukowski biographer, Neeli Cherkovsky, and a 1987 interview with Hank about the making of Barfly that is, of course, hilariously bitter. The Charles Bukowski Tapes allow for intimacy, making them charmed and disturbing. " -Trinie Dalton

THE NEXT TWO RARITIES COME WITH HIGH PRAISE FROM A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT SOURCES, SO I AM ALSO PSYCHED...
PTARMIGAN - Ptarmigan (Lion Productions 609; Canada) "First official release of this cult favorite - an album overflowing with brooding, mystical, Eastern-influenced hippie psychedelia dominated by long and largely instrumental tracks - all based on a complex interplay of recorder, hand drums and acoustic guitar. Ptarmigan recorded the basic tracks for what would eventually become their only album in Vancouver, B.C. during the fall of 1972. It then took the band's producer and manager, renowned flautist Paul Horn, more than a year to find a label willing to release such unusual music. Finally, in 1974, Columbia Records released Ptarmigan's album to critical acclaim, and minimal sales. The music of Ptarmigan is deep and authentic, and sounds best when meditating on a landscape, an emotion, or a bottle of wine. Sometimes it is free-flowing and jazz-oriented; at other times it has the mystical feel of a shamanistic ceremony, with its oriental or South American harmonies. But in the end, this album is about the sea - Ptarmigan was, after all, from Vancouver Island, and the musicians were well-versed in the contradictory moods of the surrounding ocean. One of those hidden gems from the 70s that makes life better when you discover them all these years later, rated by many as the best 'folk/progressive' and/or 'folk/psych' album ever made. As one contemporary review said, this is 'music from musicians, for musicians, late-at-night, last joint music.' Our Lion Productions reissue comes with a 28-page booklet that includes lyrics, liner notes from the band, and a multitude of photos and historical mementos."

EMMANUELLE PARRENIN - Maison Rose (Lion Productions 611; Canada) "We begin by saying that this is an album unlike any other. A bold statement, perhaps. Yet look in the Scented Gardens of the Mind book and you will see this description: 'a revelation of a folk album, with songs of incredible beauty and innovative arrangements. It features traditional instruments you've hardly ever heard before and touches of the avant-garde. Play this album directly after that of another randomly chosen female folk album, and you will notice the difference! This is one of the best!' Parrenin had been part of a traditional 'antique folk' movement in France in the late 1960s (she was in many ways a French equivalent to Sandy Denny or Mandy Morton); indeed, she had recorded eight albums with musicians from this scene before Maison Rose - her best, and last album, recorded in 1976 and released the following year. The record seems to alternate between a cosmic take on an ancient Breton sound, and delicate, multi-tracked ballads - ranging from sounds that would not be out of place on an Ash Ra Tempel album to elements of traditional French folk music (including home-made instruments) that are just as exotic. Certainly, the avant-garde edge lurking beneath the simple folkiness of Maison Rose puts in mind the explorations of Brigitte Fontaine with her sometime musical voyager Areski; there are also suggestions of the pastoral aesthetic of Vashti Bunyan, as well as the multi-track sensuality of Linda Perhacs (to name two much-touted singers who seem to have a similar ability to enchant). But Parrenin has her own style, her music has its own deeply ethereal quality, and the album itself has its own magic spell to cast that renders comparison with other albums unimportant in the end. Magnificent... we say."

THE GLASGOW IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA With MAGGIE NICOLS - Which Way Did He Go? (FMR 158; UK) This is the release by the large (21 piece) and adventurous Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, their first featured Evan Parker as the guest soloist, their third disc will feature special guest Barry Guy. For this date, they utilized the special talents of UK avant-vocalist Maggie Nicols, who has been an important improviser for about three decades. The only other musicians here that I am familiar with are George Burt (acoustic guitar) and Raymond MacDonald (alto & soprano sax), who have a fine group with CDs out featuring Lol Coxhill as their guest. Each of the five pieces here long Improvisations, the two longest featuring Ms. Nicols. This Scottish orchestra consists of players from different backgrounds, jazz, modern classical and experimental pop. A large group like this needs a certain amount of discipline or focus to avoid complete chaos, a certain amount of conduction is employed. There is a wonderful balance of the elements at the center of this thoughtful, yet somewhat free world. It often sounds as if Butch Morris is conducting since there are a number of waves that emerge and submerge, rarely does it get very dense. A superbly recorded and beautifully balanced effort considering the large amount of players involved. - BLG

JOHN SURMAN - Westering Home (FMR 16; UK) John Surman has finally become recognized as an international jazz superstar. Many of his earlier releases however have not been available on CD. We are proud to release the Peter Eden produced 'Westering Home (originally released on the Turtle imprint)'. From a period when he began experimenting with multi-tracking and electronics this was his first solo record to be released (a format that John has continued to pursue through his association with ECM). This is a fine example of an artist who has grown into a major voice in contemporary music. John Surman - bari & soprano saxes, bass clarinet & synthesizer.

JAPANESE NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL: ZUBI ZUBA X PLUS AKATEN PLUS RONRUINS PLUS RUINS ALONE PLUS ZOFFY PLUS SHRINP WARK PLUS ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR PLUS SEIKAZOKU!! - $15
Featuring Yoshida Tatsuya (the Ruins), Tsuyama Atsushi & Kawabata Makoto (both Acid Mother's Temple) in different combinations.
Zubi Zuba X: (Yoshida/Tsuyama/Kawabata) Eccentric poly-rhythmic a cappella ensemble. It covers from Gregorian chant to ethnic music, to do-wop to hardcore screaming, heavily using irregular rhythms and polyrhythm. All sorts of ideas and aberrant musicality overturn the image of a cappella. their totally meaningless lyrics and desperate performances throw the audiences into the abyss of the laughter and admiration. it makes the concept of "singing ability"nonsense.
Akaten: (Tsuyama/Yoshida) Formed in 1995 with the motto of "irresponsibleness" and "perfunctoriness." Using daily commodities like scissors, toothbrush, zipper, camera, and plastic bottle as percussions, and shouting their brand names over and over as the "songs," the show is performed under the concept of low cost and maximum sound effect. AKATEN is the experimental convenience store punk band that provides the sound images of cheap and simple daily lives.
RonRuins & Ruins Alone (Yoshida) RUINS is pioneer of Drum & Bass duo. Tunes are complicated and mysterious, and songs are sung in the language of their own invention. It's high-tension, wild, heavy, speedy, acute, and powerful tremendous ensemble never sounds like they are only two players. since last bassist left Yoshida still seeking a bassist and currently he has been playing as RUINS ALONE. playing RUINS songs with sampling bass. this time Yoshida will play songs from Koenji Hyakkei and Korekyojinn too.
Zoffy: (Tsuyama/Kawabata) Formed in 1998. Zoffy's music hints both at the members' deep musical knowledge via their improvised performances of troubadour music and European trad, and also at their deep love for rock via their destructivist covers of classic rock songs, that no longer sounds like anything but ZOFFY. The group believes that humor is essential in music, and their unprecedented performances stray far from the beaten track. Is this the Ultima Thule that rock music has long been aiming for?
Shrinp Wark: (Kawabata/Yoshida) A new improvising duo consisting of Yoshida from Ruins and Kawabata from AMT. group inspired by This Heat and band name taken from their song "Shrink Wrap". Cosmic chemical reaction sound that embraces a multidimensional chaos based upon the principles of minimalism, an anarchistic warping of the time axis, and ultra-accelerated revolving of time particles.
Acid Mothers Temple SWR: (Kawabata/Tsuyama/Yoshida) Acid Mothers Temple have rapidly become acclaimed as the greatest, most extreme trip psychedelic group in the world. SWR is the AMT Family's most powerful battle-formation yet. featuring Tsuyama and Kawabata from the original AMT and Yoshida from Ruins. their crushingly acute freakout sound will pulverize the world's legions of wannabe psych groups.
Seikazoku: (Kawabata/Tsuyama/Yoshida) Formed in 1996, the group nonchalantly references classic prog and rock, ethnic music, jazz and contemporary composition. Improvised music for holy trinity heresy that runs the full gamut of ethnic and electric instruments, primitive stupidity, the suspicious stench of medieval alchemy, the raw power of early rock music, all leavened with a pinch of cosmic incoherency.
