THOMAS CHAPIN TRIO - Ride (Playscape 71595; USA) This fabulous disc features the late, great Thomas Chapin on alto & sopranino saxes & flute, Mario Pavone on contrabass and Michael Sarin on drums and was recorded live at the North Sea Jazz Festival on July 15th of 1995. Oh happy day, what a joyous thing to receive an unreleased live trio date from one of the finest jazz trios of all time. I caught this colossal trio more than a dozen times throughout their long reign and most often at the Knitting Factory, whose label released six superb discs from, as well as great box-set. What is so wonderful about this grand disc is that it captures this marvelous trio at their height, in the middle of European tour, playing at a huge festival and sandwiched between two other heavy groups, Jackie McLean/Roy Haynes (Thomas studied with Jackie Mack) and David Murray/Fred Hopkins/Andrew Cyrille, all inspirations and heroes to Thomas, Mario and Michael.
This trio had so many strong facets to their distinctive sound and this amazing long, live set captures each one perfectly. Commencing with "Anima", which begins with an astonishing solo alto sax intro, soon that feisty, firebreathing, super-tight and passionate trio kicks in and takes off. Thomas' spirit and energy is unstoppable, he pushes his trio harder and higher as he soars, burning intensely as they reach for the stars. Contrabass giant and bandleader, Mario Pavone, is also in amazing shape, digging in, swinging hard, holding down the bottom end and taking a number of inspired solos. Drum wiz, Michael Sarin, was new to New York when he stepped in for Steve Johns on the eve of another of those grueling Knit tours and became an integral part of this trio, which just kept getting better with each disc and gig or tour. Michael also plays a number of powerful and spirited solos as well. The difficult piece, "Pet Scorpion" is unveiled on this set and it is one of those dynamic and challenging works, that pushes the trio through loads of intricate twists and turns, the adrenalin pumping throughout. Mario starts off "Night Bird Song" with another of his sterling solos, making way for Thomas' flute, which is another of the things that made Thomas so special. Thomas' flute playing was always quite magical and ever-captivating, he had a tone of immense beauty and ranks amongst the best of all jazz flutists. His solo on "Aeolus" is one of those joyous Rahsaan-like jewels that must be heard to be believed. "Bad Birdie" begins with some fine free, tongue-slapping sax sound and soon explodes open. "Changes Two Tires" is another of those incredibly tight, start and stop, works that keeps the trio on their toes throughout. Whoa! The encore is an odd yet smart choice, a raucous version of the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride". A complete blast of fun-filled rockin' that brought the audience to their feet. Over 70 minutes long and a truly a joyous "ride", from the beginning to the very end. - BLG

JIM BLACK/ALASNOAXIS - Dogs of Great Indifference (W&W 120; Germany) Featuring Jim's usual quartet with Chris Speed on tenor sax; Hilmar Jensson on guitars; Skuli Sverrisson on basses and Jim Black on drums. "Since the best music tends to happen when one doesn't ask for it, I wanted it to be as musically spontaneous and democratic as possible - only wanting to pen the actual song material and letting the band forge the shape and attitude of each piece." - Jim Black.
This is the fourth fine disc from Jim Black's swell post/rock/jazz quartet Alasnoaxis. It is more laid back and cautious, mature and contemplative. The opening piece, "Oddfelt", is quite haunting and glides ghost-like in slow motion. The title track kind of rocks at a moderate tempo with melancholy tenor sax from Mr. Speed. I dig the way that "Tars and Vanish" just keeps building until it finally starts rocking hard and heavy near the end. Skulli's splendid electric bass often plays the central melody and stretches it out slowly as Hilmar's electric guitar plays atmospheric sounds that float above. The tempo seems to increase on every other successive track, as they build into a more rockin' unit. Sometimes Skulli's bass provides a dense cushion of ominous growls as the guitar and tenor slowly unearth their dark harmonies. Hilmar often changes his tone on most of these pieces to evoke different spirits and alter the texture from noisy to somewhat more lyrical yet spicy terrain. I like the way, a few of these tunes develop in unexpected ways, you never know where they will go. "Desemrascar" starts with some explosive free/rock/noise yet soon becomes sparse, free and spooky, building up to more explosive free/noise. There are two extremes at play here, from the sublime to the more explosive, you never know where you will land, yet the balance is just right. - BLG

SOFT MACHINE LEGACY [ELTON DEAN/JOHN ETHERIDGE/HUGH HOPPER /JOHN MARSHALL] - Soft Machine Legacy (Moonjune 008; USA) This is the final unreleased studio recording, the very last one with Elton Dean before he passed away in February of this year. This is all newly written music, except for one track that blends and updates two older Soft Machine pieces. All four of these grand musicians contribute to the composing here and each has brought some fine writing as well as invigorating playing. "Ratlift", which combines Hopper's "Facelift" with Mike Ratledge's "As If" is just incredible! It is an immensely sly, cerebral piece with amazing lead guitar from John Etheridge, hypnotic electric piano from Elton Dean, Hugh's trademark fuzz bass and John Marshall's magical drumming. When they mutate into "Facelift" (from Softs' 'Third' from 1970), you get the feeling that this could have been the real beginning of what was soon called "fusion". Hugh's bluesy "Twelve Twelve" features some strong solos from Elton's snake-like saxello and Etheridge's dynamic guitar. "F & I" is a short dreamy duo for Elton's electric piano and John's guitar. What makes this disc so strong is the consistently inspired interplay between Elton's saxes and Etheridge's guitar, as well as the exciting interplay between Hugh's el. bass and Marshall's great drums. Elton plays electric piano on about half of these tracks, like he did during his days with Soft Machine, and his playing is so fine, understated, yet fitting perfectly in the web of Legacy's unique sound. There are two other inspired duos here as well, Dean & Marshall on "Fur Edge" and Dean & Hopper on "Theta Meter", which features some superb echoed saxello, el. bass and drums. While it is unfortunate that this gem will be the last studio date for our fallen hero, Elton Dean, it is also a wonderful thing for us Canterbury fans to be left with this supreme "Legacy". - BLG

JOHN BUTCHER/HENRY KAISER/AARON BENNETT/DANIELLE DEGRUTTOLA/DAMON SMITH/JEROME BRYERTON - Sextessense: A Tribute to John Stevens & SME [Spontaneous Music Ensemble] (Balance Point Acoustics 11; USA) Featuring Henry Kaiser on guitar, John Butcher & Aaron Bennet on saxes, Danielle DeGruttola on cello, Damon Smith on acoustic bass and Jerome Bryerton on drums, plus Kurt Newman on guitar on one track. John Stevens is perhaps the most influential and most beloved of all British modern "jazz" drummers, he certainly cast a large shadow on the entire European avant/jazz scene since his the mid-sixties. As a leader or co-leader of so many diverse and influential ensembles, Spontaneous Music Ensemble (SME), an original member of Company, Amalgam, Detail and John Steven's Away, his playing embraced so many different streams, free/jazz, Ornette-like grooves, fusion, South African and rock-like groove-space. He played in duos and trios with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Frode Gjerstad, John Butcher and Gary Smith. He worked with musicians as diverse as Bobby Bradford, Dudu Pukwana, Alan Holdsworth, Julie Tippetts and John Martyn.
So, it makes perfect sense that a musicians like Henry Kaiser, John Butcher and Damon Smith, would want to do a tribute to this great man, spirit, teacher, drummer and multi-bandleader. Much of Stevens' best work was done with the legendary SME, which le led for nearly thirty years (1967-1994), with changing personnel on almost every recording. Although SME were known as a "free" ensemble, it is Steven's direction that made them so cohesive and often so magical. I get the feeling that the same vision or direction was used to guide this extraordinary session. Henry has chosen some like-minded players here and although I am unfamiliar with Mr. Bryerton, Mr. Bennet & Mr. Newman, everyone fits just right into the often nimble, yet focused world of directed improv. Most carefully recorded so that one can swim within sea of rich details. This is one of the finest improv dates I've heard in recent memory, you get the feeling that there is some close listening and responding going on here. Nice to hear from the wonderful cellist Danielle DeGruttola, whose playing can only be heard on a few other discs with Henry. An extraordinary session on all accounts. - BLG

VIJAY IYER/RUDRESH MANHATHAPPA - Raw Materials (Savoy 17603; USA) Pianist VIJAY IYER and alto saxophonist RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA represent a new generation of American jazz musicians who explore the cultures of their ancestry through their music. The sons of immigrants from India, they draw from Asian, African, and European traditions to create original music that is beyond category. They have gained recognition from audiences, musicians, and critics alike as world-class improvisers and composers, outspoken young Asian American voices, and important forces in the music world. Since 1996, Iyer and Mahanthappa have worked together constantly, performing their cutting-edge original music to widespread acclaim around the world.
"They effortlessly traverse traditions, their materials repeatedly coiling with the tensions of Indian scales and unraveling with forward rhythmic motion. In this regard, Mahanthappa's frequent employment of a shenai-like timbre is crucial, as it alternately gives their piquant melodies earthy and modernistic edges. Iyer's penchant for nuance in attack and harmony also contributes to the precision shading of the music; yet more importantly, Iyer's daring flourishes seep out of the background to propel the music into new directions... Iyer and Mahanthappa create compelling music." - Bill Shoemaker, Jazz Times

WAYNE HORVITZ GRAVITAS QUARTET With PEGGY LEE/RON MILES/SARA SCHOENBECK - Way Out East [H-SACD] (Songlines 1558; Canada) [this is a Hybrid SACD (H-SACD) which means it is playable on ordinary CD players as well] Featuring Wayne Horvitz (piano and electronics), Peggy Lee (cello), Ron Miles (trumpet) & Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon).
The Gravitas Quartet is pianist Wayne Horvitz's new improvising chamber ensemble. Its members are all highly distinctive voices on their instruments, the sound of the group is unique, and the playing is both classically poised and jazzily exuberant and inventive. What really makes the music shine though is Wayne's gift as a composer, the way his themes and harmonies insinuate themselves into the listener's consciousness and often touch you in those vulnerable places with their tart nostalgia and bittersweet melancholy.
You can hear the long history of jazz in some of these pieces; others seem to break free from genre expectations altogether. Since the late 1980s Wayne has been composing for various classical music ensembles - string orchestra, string quartet (heard on his new Tzadik CD Whispers, Hymns and a Murmur), and various other chamber groups, sometimes with electronics and/or improvising soloists such as Bill Frisell, Eyvind Kang or Peggy Lee. The Gravitas Quartet splits the difference between this work and jazzier writing for groups such as Sweeter Than the Day: This group really came out of my desire to find a context for the way I've been developing my piano playing in the last five years....
When I have a new project I often have a lot of ideas at once so I jot them down quickly and then go back and work them through. Sometimes it's as simple as "I need to write a piece that features Peggy" so clearly my language is inspired partly by her playing. L.B. started out when I was fooling around with a harmonic device in a song from West Side Story (hence the title) but once it developed I doubt most people would notice it. A lot of the structures are similar to ones I might use with the Four plus One Ensemble or even my group with Butch Morris and Bobby Previte from the late 80s. That being said, the actual written material, at least in some cases, is really notated as if I was writing for a classical ensemble, both in terms of the content and compositional technique. They're really miniatures with places for improvisation."

LUCIANO BERIO - Vol. 2: The Complete Sequenzas, Alternate Sequenzas, & Works For Solo Instruments [4 CD set] (mode 161/4; USA) Luciano Berio greatly enriched the repertoire for solo instruments and voice with his series of sixteen Sequenzas and works such as Psy, Gesti, Rounds and Fa-Si. Written between 1958 and 2002 and spanning almost five decades of Berio's creative career, these solo compositions reflect some of his most crucial aesthetic ideas and compositional techniques.
The first COMPLETE recording of the Sequenazs: This set includes the world premiere recording of Sequenza XIV for solo cello, written for ex-Arditti Quartet cellist Rohan de Saram, who performs the Sequenza here.
The first COMPLETE recording of the alternate Sequenazs: At the request of many soloists, Berio arranged several of the Sequenzas for alternate instrumentation. This set compiles all of Berio's alternate Sequenzas for the first time, also with some first recordings.
Plus all of Berio's works for solo instruments: Also collected together for the first time, Berio's solo works and personal arrangements (with the exception of those for solo piano, which would be a full CD in itself) are included.
An international all-star cast of performers: Mode had the good fortune to begin this set with the help of Mr. Berio, who suggested some of the performers here. They include members of The Arditti Quartet and Ensemble Modern along with other distinguished soloists.

STEVE LACY/BRION GYSIN - Songs (Completed) (Hatology 625; Switzerland) Doubtless, Steve Lacy is one of contemporary music's most prolific practitioners - and certainly one of the most recorded. But even within a catalogue as bulging and varied as his, this sequence of Songs is a singular experience...Throughout these remarkable Songs the music is inseparable from the words. Extra-musical echoes may occur - for example, the melismatic winding of themes in Gay Paree Bop and Somebody Special may suggest Gysin's Moroccan excursions. Or they may not. It doesn't matter. What matters is their emotional resonance and unity of feeling, as urgent and accessible as those of Schubert transported to an age of anxiety. - Art Lange

RUSS LOSSING - All Things Arise (Hatology 629; Switzerland) Russ Lossing : piano solo; performing Alabama Song by Kurt Weil, Azure by Duke Ellington, Kathelin Gray by Ornette Coleman, Pent-Up House by Sonny Rollins and his own compositions. For Lossing, improvisation is clearly a special act, a study in transparence and transformation, a creative exchange among the elements. One hears fresh relations of time and space. His acute sense of time connects inevitably to its absence. Space is heard in his sense of density, the room he can make around a note even at high speed, the contrasts between counterpoint and elegant strings of single notes. Space is also vertical in Lossing's music--in the ways that wide and tight intervals interact in his chords. This solo CD seems almost two-sided, like the LP of tradition. There is a side of free improvisations followed by treatments of largely familiar themes. We might think of it as a voyage inward and a voyage outward; a journey forward followed by one into the past. - Stuart Broomer

THIS HEAT - Out of Cold Storage: This Heat/Deceit/Made Available /Repeat /Health & Efficiency...+ bonus CD [6 CD set] (This Is/ReR; UK) THE BOX will contains all the released material, newly re-mastered (This Heat, Deceit, Made Available - The Peel Sessions, Repeat, Health and Efficiency, PLUS a CD of unreleased material selected and re-mastered by Charles Hayward & Charles Bullen, PLUS a fat book of interviews, articles, photograph, memorabilia and documents that trace the history and contextualise work of the group.
"Long awaited release of all recordings of This Heat, this includes remastered versions of their self-titled first (aka Blue and Yellow), Deceit, Health & Effeciency (padded out to a longer length with a second version of the drone piece), Made Available, Repeat, and Live, which has never before been released! Working at a time in London when, except for punk, there wasn't much happening in creative music, This Heat showed that there was another path. This Heat, the band, emerged in early 1976 on the leading edge of what became the new wave, but they were always apart, more scary and more subtle. Known as the most left-field, and at the same time most hard-edged, band in all of England, their concerts attracted experimental, punk and new wave audiences alike. Just a handful of performances made them the band everyone had to see, and every journalist had to interview. And the more we knew, the more enigmatic they became. The band worked day-in, day-out for years in their own now legendary studio in Brixton (Cold Storage - sited in an old industrial meat refrigerator), or they were away somewhere touring abroad. In this hothouse environment, their material evolved and grew, and became increasingly intense; on the one hand more cuttingly simple, on the other more layered and more dense..."

PETER BROTZMANN GROUP With FRANK WRIGHT/WILLEM BREUKER /TOSHINORI KONDO/ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH/HARRY MILLER /LOUIS MOHOLO et al - Alarm (UMS/Atavistic 257; USA) "The story is simple. We were touring with this band, and the reason I could put the band together in the first place was a radio gig in Hamburg. Michael Naura, chief of the jazz dept there, was setting up a series of on-air concerts in a 200-seat studio, so we performed the first piece, which I called "Alarm." I used the graphic instructions for a reaction to a nuclear emergency, a series of waves and straight tones, repeated in a certain way.
We had planned two more pieces, one by Willem Breuker and one by Frank Wright. My piece took about 40 minutes, the first half of the concert. At the end of the performance, Naura came to me while we were still on the air - and whispered that the house got a bomb threat and had to be evacuated. So I had to bring the piece quickly to and end and the audience was asked to leave the hall. We also had to pack and leave. Police and special forces showed up with all kinds of equipment, gear, dogs - we know all that better now than then.
That was the end of the concert and that's the 40 minutes we have on tape." -Peter Brotzmann, Chicago, October 2005

INSTINCTUAL EYE [KEVIN NORTON/FRODE GJERSTAD/NICK STEPHENS] - Born In Brooklyn (Barking Hoop 010; USA) Featuring Kevin Norton on vibes & percussion, Frode Gjerstad on alto sax & clarinet and Nick Stephens on bass. We recently spotlighted Nick Stephen's great Loose Torque label, which has some ten fine discs out with work from John Stevens, Lol Coxhill, Evan Parker, Frode Gjerstad and Dudu Pukwana. I wasn't familiar with Nick Stephens, before this, but I have to admit that he is an excellent bassist and his label consistently strong. This new trio date was recorded live at Barbes in Brooklyn, little did I know that this great unsung bassist was in town. 'Born in Brooklyn' features only two long pieces at 21 and 42 minutes in length. Norwegian saxist, Frode Gjerstad, also had a long-term partnership with John Stevens and can be found on some 45 recordings by now. He can also be found on records with Peter Brotzmann, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Derek Bailey and Borah Bergman.
This is a fine improv date that starts off slowly with mysterious sounds. Superbly recorded by my friend Scott Friedlander, closed miked and balanced just right. This is an organic excursion, which unfolds slowly and builds through different sections. This has that European feel of scurrying activity, the trio breathing together and weaving their wares into a rich tapestry. Kevin balances between the vibes and drums, adding shades and colors more slowly with the vibes and pushing the trio into more furious sailing when he is at the drums. There is one section where the bassist plays this slow, suspenseful line that brings it al into focus, it is as if we are entering another world or dimension where everything has slowed down so we can witness some important event. It is a most magical moment that defines what is best about great improv dates, you never know when the moment will appear, so be patient, the reward are great. - BLG

BILLY STEIN TRIO With REUBEN RADDING/RASHID BAKR - Hybrids (Barking Hoop 011; USA) Featuring Billy Stein on guitar & compositions, Reuben Radding on acoustic bass and Rashid Bakr on drums. I can't say that I was familiar with Billy Stein before this disc, but it turns out that he had attended Milt Hinton's Jazz Workshop at Hunter College in the mid seventies along with Sam Furnace and Kevin Norton who runs the Barking Hoop label. Both rhythm section players get around quite a bit. Reuben Radding has appeared on a half dozen discs (w/ Daniel Carter, Jack Wright, Brian Allen, Ursel Schlicht & Jeff Arnal) in the last few years alone since moving back to NYC from the Pacific Northwest. Rashid Bakr played with Cecil Taylor, continues to play with Other Dimensions in Music and has his own group that includes Billy Stein.
Somewhere in between Dom Minasi and Joe Morris are those fleet, flowing, quick, cerebral, streams of notes of Billy Stein. Both Reuben and Rashid are in fine form, blending their notes together in to quick-spinning force. Reuben seems to approach each project differently and here he swings his as off, both he and Rashid sailing together, the stream underneath the central stream. It sounds as if Billy has overdubbed himself on some of this, playing luxurious chords behind his furious, yet relaxed stream of notes. There are often a few different lines moving simultaneously as the dialogue between the bass and drums moves together the guitar floats above in slower spirals. I dig "Purple Nova", where Rashid and Billy play one line together as Reuben solos from somewhere else, yet it all feels connected. The roles are often switched on each piece as different connections take place while someone balances between two points, soloing most creatively. This is demanding music for both the listener and the player, both must work hard to hear the thread and ride the waves as they continually move and evolve. One of most fascinating jazz guitar discs to appear in quite a long while. - BLG

PETE McCANN - Most Folks (Omnitone 15213; USA) Featuring Peter McCann on electric & acoustic guitars & compositions, John O'Gallagher on alto & soprano saxes, Mike Holober on piano, John Hebert on bass and Mark Ferber on drums. Considering that Pete McCann has played blistering guitar with Bobby Previte's Miles Tribute band (sadly unrecorded) and still plays with the incredible Mahavishnu Project, his first two discs under his own name left many of disappointed. Not so with 'Most Folks', in which Mr. McCann finally shows us his best work yet. Starting with the title track, which has a sunny melody and some great straight-ahead guitar from Pete, nimble and quick. "Jojo's Waltz" is also laid back and lovely with more superb soloing from Pete. Beginning with "Rack" Em Up", the quintet picks up speed and intensity, swinging hard with strong solos from Mike's grand piano and Pete's burning guitar. The rhythm team of Hebert and Ferber, rank amongst the best in town and play with verve and creative spirit throughout. Pete plays some sublime nylon-string acoustic guitar on "Las Tias", which is a delicate Latiny gem. "About Face" has an early-seventies sound with Pete's round, warm tone and deft playing coming straight out of Pat Martino-land. Pete really gets down on "Yes, My Friend" with some smoking el. guitar that will keep those fusion fans grinning. I dig the haunting, cerebral vibe of "Hunter Gatherer", a fine piece filled with suspense and delicacy. I especially like the way "JM" has the guitar and piano playing these intricate lines together as O'Gallagher's alto sax solos and weaves a web around the other players. This is a particularly & consistently strong date from one of downtown's best new(er) guitar greats. - BLG

PEEPING TOM [MIKE PATTON] - Peeping Tom (Ipecac 77; USA) "Years in the making, Peeping Tom, noise rock renaissance man Mike Patton's most accessible work since his days in Faith No More, is finally a reality. The 11-track opus, featuring a lengthy and incongruous cast of guest performers. In keeping with the landmark 1960 psychological horror film that inspired its name, Peeping Tom had its genesis a modus operandi devoid of physical intimacy. Patton would write songs with a wish list of theoretical collaborators in mind, then hope for a reply in the form of a finished track. Lack of face-to-face interaction did not keep long-distance collaborators from turning in exceptional performances: Norah Jones' lascivious 'Sucker,' Kool Keith's 'Getaway' and Massive Attack's 'Kill The DJ' are intense and passionate as anything a live band environment could have produced. Peeping Tom also includes contributions from Amon Tobin, Bebel Gilberto, Dub Trio, Kid Koala and several of Patton's Bay Area running buddies, such as Dan 'the Automator' Nakamura (who tag teams with Rahzel on 'Mojo'), Jel, Odd Nosdam and Doseone of Anticon Records."

ANDREW BISHOP With GERALD CLEAVER/TIM FLOOD - Time & Imaginary Time (Envoi 501; USA) The debut release from composer, saxophonist, & clarinetist Andrew Bishop with collaboration from acclaimed drummer Gerald Cleaver & bassist Tim Flood draws its inspiration from physics principles & their conceptual association to the process of composition, improvisation, & rhythmic pulse time. The 13 originals (and a hidden track) range from the pulsed pointillism of Picking Up the Pieces and the rhythmic repetition of Cleaver's Loops to the ambient for whom the bell tolls & folksy lullaby Go to Sleep!, drawn from a tune that Bishop sang for his son. A melodic fragment serves as an agent of both structure and developing variation to bind the divergent works.

"I recorded this album with the help of a wide variety of electronic effects pedals. The majority of the compositions are simply predetermined settings on the pedals with entirely improvised music. The rest are composed structures or melodies with improvisations layered on top. The six pieces draw their inspiration from the work of some of my favorite filmmakers: Francois Truffaut, Werner Herzog, Masaki Kobayashi, Andrei Tarkovsky, Jim Jarmusch, and Terry Gilliam." "The 2 or 3 times that Loren's quartet Haunted House played at the old DMG on 5th St. were some of the most intense and inspired blues/psych rockin' moments that DMG has ever presented. Sounding somewhat similar to Neil Young & Crazy Horse, with two wailing electric guitars, an Egyptian daf drummer and Suzanne Langille's immensely haunting vocals, Byron Coley still treasures those bootleg tapes that have been circulating ever since." - BLG

MYTHS [V.A. With JON HASSELL/GAVIN BRYARS/HAROLD BUDD] - V 3: La Nouvelle Serenite (Sub Rosa 005; Belgium) HAROLD BUDD/GAVIN BRYARS/JON HASSELL - Myths 3: La Nouvelle Serenite (Sub Rosa 005) This is a reissue of the third volume in this early Sub Rosa compilation series, originally released in 1987. Features long tracks from Jon Hassell (duo with J.A. Deane, from 1985), never released since; Harold Budd (duo with Eugen Bowen, from 1983) in the mood of "The Serpent in Quicksilver" (with a splendid steel guitar); Gavin Bryars (duo with Andrew Thomson, from 1987); an unpublished sketch for two pianos called "Sketch For Sub Rosa" (later published on ECM with a chamber ensemble); and an excerpt from Les Archives Sonores Sub Rosa, a short film without image.
Spanning from 1972-1975, Harold Budd created four individual works under the collective title The Pavilion of Dreams, produced by ambient pioneer Brian Eno. His two subsequent collaborations with Eno, The Plateaux of Mirror and The Pearl, established his trademark atmospheric piano style. Jon Hassell's first recordings were made with minimalist masters La Monte Young and Terry Riley, through whom he met the Hindustani raga master, Pandit Pran Nath. From his studies of the classical Indian music of the Kirana tradition he adapted these techniques to the trumpet and developed a new style of playing which forms the basis of his own unique sound world. Gavin Bryars has written a large number of works, including three operas, and a number of instrumental pieces. His first major work as composer was The Sinking of the Titanic on Brian Eno's Obscure label in 1975.This collection gathers together the most stunning of ambient, atmospheric sound worlds from three very important composers.

*** GERRY FITZ-GERALD - Mouseproof (Sunbeam 5016; UK) One of the most unconventional albums ever recorded, this avant-garde psychedelic suite contains elements of folk, jazz, rock and electronics, but has a sound and atmosphere all of its own. Recorded in 1970, but barely released (despite the enthusiastic support of John Peel), original copies now sell for astronomical sums. Guest performers include Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention), Rik Kenton (Roxy Music) and Geoff Leigh (Henry Cow, Hatfield & the North & Radar Favourites). This is its long-awaited debut on CD, and comes complete with comprehensive liner notes and rare photographs.
"Gerry Fitzgerald is an incredible guitarist & unique sonic songsmith. He was in the first Henry Cow offshoot band, Radar Favourites with Geoff Leigh, had a duo album with Lol Coxhill and can be found on Fred Frith's 'Guitar Solos - Volume 2'. I had the good fortune to hear him live with Lol Coxhill opening for El Skid (Elton Dean/Alan Skidmore Qt) at the 100 Club in London in December of 1975. 'Mouseproof' is his Gerry's one and only long lost solo effort and it is one of the rarest of all gems. I found a copy of it at Bleecker Bob's in the late 70's for $15 and almost fainted when I discovered it. I later told Fred Frith, who was just astonished as I was!" - BLG

FRESH MAGGOTS - Fresh Maggots [revised expanded 2nd edition] (Sunbeam 5002; UK) New repackaged 2006 edition, with 7 new bonus tracks. "Long established as a cult classic and collector's grail, Mick Burgoyne and Leigh Dolphin's sole album is presented here with their full co-operation. Recorded in 1971 when they were just nineteen and fresh to the studio, Fresh Maggots is one of the best distillations of folk and psychedelia ever recorded. Varying in tone from heavy rock ('Frustration') to protest ('Everybody's Gone To War'), social commentary ('Dole Song') and pastoral ('Rosemary Hill'), it's a highly unusual and powerful record that enjoyed extravagant acclaim on release but sold poorly and has never been officially issued since. Original pressings are notoriously badly pressed, so this reissue is sure to be rapturously welcomed by all lovers of acid folk."

WIZZ JONES - The Legendary Me (Sunbeam 5015; UK) An undisputed giant of modern folk and one of the finest acoustic guitarists Britain has ever produced, Wizz Jones has influenced musicians from Eric Clapton, John Renbourn and Ralph McTell to Billy Connolly, Bert Jansch and even Rod Stewart. Following the rapturous reception given to Sunbeam's issue of his 1975 Lazy Farmer project last year, we are delighted to announce the long overdue reissue of this classic 1970 set. A mixture of standards and originals, many by his old friend Alan Tunbridge but all arranged in his inimitable style, the package comes complete with detailed liner notes, rare photographs and three previously unreleased bonus tracks.
"Long prayed-for reissue of this classic 1970 UK folk stunner that's a missing link both in the Wizz Jones oeuvre and in the guitar-freedom music of the prime era. The Legendary Me was Wizz Jones' second studio album, originally released by the obscure but vital Village Thing label (following his self-titled debut on United Artists). Cosmically figuring somewhere between the non-trad radical expressions of the Mike Cooper/Roy Harper axis and Clive Palmer's post-ISB journey, Jones' terrestrial position finds him alongside Davy Graham, Shirley Collins & Palmer at the dawn of '60s UK freedom. Under-recorded until the late '60s, The Legendary Me has been impossible to find since release. It fits snuggly next to his other classic, Right Now, released a year later on Columbia. If you've ever wished John Renbourn was twice as good or thought Bert Jansch was too uptight, then this is your cup of meat. Remastered the way you've come to expect from Sunbeam -- at Abbey Road from the original tapes -- this perfect product includes three killer bonus tracks (including a Leonard Cohen cover that doesn't suck and the master's take on Jansch's "Needle of Death"), liner notes, and cool vintage photos."

FOR PEOPLE WHO MISSED OUT ON THE RHYS CHATHAM 3 CD BOX SET 'An Angel Moves Too Fast to See: The Anthology' A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS HAS NOW ISSUED TWO OF THE THREE DISCS AS INDIVIDUAL ITEMS: A CD WITH THE PIECE THAT PREMIERED IN THAT BOX, 'An Angel Moves Too Fast to See', AND A SINGLE DISC ANTHOLOGY, 'Die Donnergotter (The Thundergods)'
RHYS CHATHAM - An Angel Moves Too Fast to See (Table of Elements 802; USA) "By the late 1980s, Rhys Chatham was chafing against the logistical and financial constraints imposed upon him in the States; in his mind was a vast, unprecedented sound. Moving permanently from New York to Paris, Chatham began composing his masterpiece, a piece for one hundred electric guitars, electric bass and drums. The result, An Angel Moves Too Fast to See, is one of the most extraordinary works in the minimalist canon, one that demonstrates the majesty inherent in Chatham's amplified imagination. Now widely available for the first time, this lavish CD presents this sonic revolution in all its glory, and cements Chatham's reputation as a monolithic figure astride both rock and classical musics."
CD $16
Also available as an LP for $18
RHYS CHATHAM - Die Donnergotter (The Thundergods): The Anthology (Table of Elements; USA) "Rhys Chatham altered the DNA of rock. The New York-born composer began as a classically-trained prodigy, but by 1975, Chatham was fusing the overtone-drenched Raucous and ecstatic, this sound energized the downtown New York scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, prefigured the No Wave movement and cast a huge influence over the subsequent work of Chatham's many protegees, including Glenn Branca and future members of Sonic Youth. This release contains all of Chatham's best work of the period, from the notorious 'Guitar Trio' (1977) and the tumultuous, brass-based 'Massacre on MacDougal Street' (1982), to the soaring, euphoric masterpiece, 'Die Donnergotter' (1986). Now widely available for the first time, these tracks vividly document those glorious years in the life of a city and a milieu in which the raw, the sophisticated and the danceable merged, and a new era of rock was born."
CD $16
Also available as a 2 LP set for $24
KLAUS SCHULZE - Irrlicht (Inside Out; Germany) This is Schulze's first solo album from 1972. After stints in the legendary bands Tangerine Dream and Ash Ra Tempel, 'Irrlicht' was Klaus Schulze's first stab at a solo project. He had radical ideas for the newly developed electronic music scene that are blatantly present here. Equipped with a small orchestra, 4-track, guitar, Irrlicht is the solo debut album from Klaus Schulze (originally released in 1972) and is an absolute masterpiece in cosmic, space music. Schulze omitted the use of synthetics for this recording, relying on organ with various electronic effects to produce an absolutely mesmerizing and minimalist body of sounds that transform the listener into a total abstracted world full of mysteries within its almost never-ending spiral. No synthesizers were used here, just a remarkable use of sampled tapes and Klaus' magical touch. With no electronic pulse and rhythms, just a gloomy and distorted atmosphere, this record can easily haunt and hypnotize. Considered by many to be his finest and purest body of work, the new and definitive Revisited Records version contains the 24 minute bonus track, Dungeon and comes packaged in a deluxe digipak with new liner notes and rare photos.

AU PAIRS - Stepping Out Of Line: Playing With A Different Sex/Sense And Sensuality...plus [2 CD set] (Castle/Sanctuary; USA) 2 CD comprehensive anthology featuring the 2 complete and only albums of this early '80s UK political post punk outfit. Both albums are complemented with bonus material featuring live tracks, singles, demos and BBC sessions. The collection was compiled with participation of the band members. Includes extensive liner notes, photos and interviews with guitarist/singer Paul Foad and drummer Pete Hammond.

THE [appx] 30TH ANNIVERSARY RE-RELEASE OF
ROBERT FRIPP - Exposure: Expanded Edition [2 CD set] (DGM 0602; USA)
THIS 2 CD SET INCLUDES UNRELEASED 'DARYL HALL' VERSIONS/MATERIAL ORIGINALLY DONE FOR THE ALBUM!
DISC ONE - "First Version": This is - ostensibly - the first released version of the album, as it appeared to the masses in 1979. Of course, the re-production mastering makes it sound different in places from the 1979 LP I personally transferred to CD for my listening pleasure [and I suspect there are other playful tweaks as well]
DISC TWO - "Third Version": This is a NEW COMPOSITE EDITION made up of takes/remixes of the 1979 edition appearing on the remixed/remastered version that first appeared in 1984 [implied as Second Version], AS WELL AS Daryl Hall versions of "Chicago", "Disengaged", and the original Hall lyric/vocal version of "NY3" [which substituted the singing with an audio verite tape of neighbors fighting in Fripp's building] here titled "New York New York New York" - the only lyrics not printed in the booklet, so you'll have to figure them out for yourself! This song IS NOT to be confused with 'NYCNY' [different lyrics and music] which is one of the original tracks for Last Great Heartthrob, and which did appear in another take on Hall's Sacred Song album.
This second disc ALSO HAS FIVE BONUS CUTS after the original running order of the album which include Hall vocal versions of "Mary" and "Exposure" as well as the alternate '84 versions of 'Disengaged" and "NY3", and a previously unknown to me Hammill AND Terre Roche vocals version of "Chicago"!
Which means out of eight Hall songs originally on the unreleased'...Heartthrob...' we get to hear seven of them in total here, five songs of which have never before been released with Hall vocals plus dual versions of the two which were previously released ["You Burn Me Up I'm A Cigarette" and "North Star"] BUT WE DO NOT GET the original '...Heartthrob...' version of "NYCNY', which admittedly is very close to the released version on Hall's 'Sacred Songs', nor do we get the trio version of 'Mary' mentioned in my letter below, though the inclusion of my mention of it in Fripp's liner notes act as a teaser - of things we still cannot have!
"Prior to this release, I had assigned a numbering system to establish versions of Exposure. The 1st would be the unreleased '78 version [variously titled 'The Last Great New York Heartthrob'] with Daryl Hall handling all vocal chores save on "Here Comes The Flood" (which Peter Gabriel performs). However, Tommy Mottola, Hall and Oates mgr, wouldn't let this come out unless it was a 'Hall And Fripp' record - AND released on RCA, not Fripp's label EG.
(By the way, the original running order on the Polydor test pressing - the hallowed artifact is in my collection and IS NOT a bootleg - for '...Heartthrob...' [originally cat # 5013] was:
SIDE ONE: Preface; You Burn Me Up I'm A Cigarette; North Star; Disengage; I Smile Like Chicago; Exposure; New York New York New York, Haaden Two
SIDE TWO: Mary; Breathless; NYCNY; 1st Inaugural Address; Water Music I; Here Comes The Flood: Water Music II; Postcript )
So Fripp paid a lot of money to keep two of the Hall takes ("You Burn Me Up, I'm A Cigarette" and "North Star") on what was, two years later ['79], ultimately released as 'Exposure', [which I counted as 2nd version] his 1st solo album, finally publicly released in a radical revamping-resequencing which found Fripp inviting all the musicians who had played live in the studio behind Hall to come back and replay their parts with vocalists Peter Hammill and Terri Roche. Unfortunately John Wetton, Tim Cappella, Alirio Lima, and Ian McDonald could not come back for this - they were, however, thanked in the liner notes. The album nonetheless involved a stellar amalgam of great talents: Brian Eno, Phil Collins, Tony Levin, Sid McGinniss (who all play together on "North Star"!) Narada Michael Walden (the latter-day Mahavishnu Orchestra drummer and later producer of Whitney Houston turns in a ferocious performance on the metal-cruncher instrumental "Breathless"), Barry Andrews (XTC, Shriekback), and Jerry Marotta (Gabriel's drummer for the 1st 15 years).
In 1984, Fripp digitally remixed the album in anticipation of the coming CD format [which I counted as 3rd version]. Among other tweaks he used a different vocal takes of Peter Hammill on "Chicago" and "Disengaged".
In 1989, Fripp and Tony Arnold did the Definite Edition 1989 remastering series [which I counted as 4th version], which included all the King Crimson studio albums, and Fripp's previously released three solo CDs. Further remixing/tweaking was apparent, including editing down the expanded 1984 length of "Water Music II" from 6'24" to 3'55".
This is version 5 [actually I've given up counting as this release so severely muddies the waters!], the 30th Anniversary Edition [in celebration of Fripp's 60th birthday 5/15/06] which on its 2 discs includes material from the unreleased 1st version!
"I remember when and where I first got this record - Soho Music Gallery in May 1979, possibly sold to me by either clerk John Zorn or Tim Berne whilst also picking up tickets to all eight Fripp Kitchen shows for the negligible price of $5 [for which you also got a free J G Bennett tape]
Well, I performed the unforgivable sin, though increasingly harder to avoid in contemporary life: listening to it the first time as background to other intrusions. But then, late that night.....!!! and hundreds of times since!
And at the Kitchen, I remember one crass individual going up to Fripp and telling him the only good thing about his Exposure album was Phil Collins' drumming on "Breathless". When Fripp told him that the drummer for that cut was Narada Michael Walden, said individual told him that then there was NOTHING good about his album [!]
But never mind the reminisce...
Looking back now, I'd say it became even stronger an album for it's having been reworked from the [then unknown] album version before it, which also served - including in a positive way - to distance it from what would have been a perceived trilogy with Sacred Songs and PG II.
Oh, by the way, did I forget to say that this album is still a stunner, nearly 30 years after the fact? From ballads to heavy metal crunchers, it shows the breadth and depth of Fripp's evolving interests as a then still young man of 31 years. And given its totally anomalous approach REMAINS AS UNIQUELY FRESH TODAY AS IT SOUNDED WAY BACK THEN!!
It's not a King Crimson album and it shouldn't be (many other group's 'stars' sorta miss that point when doing their 'solo' albums) but rather a personal diary of sorts - and a compelling program from start to finish! ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GOOGLEPLEX THUMBS-UP!!!" - MannyLunch
"It's the Sergeant Pepper of avant punk." - The Wire
LTD 2 CD 'MINI-LP COVER' ED $18 [DGM 0601]
Also available as a Regular Jewel Case 2 CD edition $16 [DGM 0602]
POSTSCRIPT -
By the way, in addition to the booklet containing the original liner notes and credits from alternate releases of the album, a segment of Fripp's online diary from last year is also printed, in which is contained an edited version of the following letter that MannyLunch sent to Sid Smith [author of 'In The Court Of King Crimson] as a submission for his 'Audience Diaries' site [which has not yet gone live]
"Hi Sid,
...I think there's very good chance you'll find great enjoyment in all the discs I sent you...
Perhaps you will be the pressure necessary to create a desire in Robert to finally put out a limited issue of the pre-Exposure recording. I know there are a lot of legal issues still to be resolved, but at this late date it may be possible to more easily arrive at an agreement with the parties involved [Daryl Hall and management], given the items that are falling out of the sky for so many artists as bonus tracks on CDs nowadays.
Hopefully it will include both Hall versions of "Mary". The CD I sent you is taken directly from an authentic white-label test pressing I purchased for the absolutely negligible sum of 12 Pounds in Portobello Road November 1982 [2 days before I cut my trip short to fly back to NY to see Fripp's unannounced guest appearance with The Roches at Carnegie Hall, for which I had "inside" confirmation - an upcoming story] and contains the chosen version which only involves Hall & Fripp.
However, a tape that was given to me by an American exec at Polydor in 1983 has virtually the same version of this test pressing. The difference is that "Mary" is a trio with Tim Cappella [I think, not Ian McDonald] adding saxophone. [This is not on the CD I sent you because the tape was irreparably damaged in a fire in my building 13 years ago]
[This is extended assumption, but it seems to be borne out by careful listening] All the players who were thanked on the original commercial release of Exposure, but are not actually listed as players, actually played on the test pressing and/or uncommitted sessions for the album: Wetton, Cappella, Lima, MacDonald
When Fripp was essentially forced to replace Hall as vocalist on several numbers due to Tommy Mottola's untenable demand that the album be credited to "Daryl Hall & Robert Fripp" AND that it be released by RCA, he didn't just strip in new vocal takes over the existing takes - he re-assembled as many of the original players to play behind the new vocalists so that spontaneous interplay would be preserved.
Story # 6
A Funny story: The night before I attended Guitarcraft in late January '88, I went back to my record store, Lunch For Your Ears, at 2 AM [my train was leaving at 6 AM] to make last-minute preparations for the gentleman who'd be looking after it the week I'd be gone.
When I arrived, this very tall gentleman and his lady companion were closely scrutinizing the many obscure imported CDs on display through the gate over the window: Daryl Hall and lady friend. I just said a warm 'Hello" [without disclosing cognition of his identity] and as I started to open the padlocks they apologized for being there, which I waved off and said they were certainly welcome to step inside for the few minutes that I would be there.
[It turned out they were there looking at covers to get an idea of direction for graphics for his upcoming solo recording - the commercial disaster "Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine"]
AS they wandered around inside, I slipped in the tape copy I kept on premises of the test pressing on one side and the cassette version on the other. By amazing coincidence, where "Mary" ended on the middle of side one, the tape could be flipped and the other version of "Mary" would be cued up exactly. It was less a coincidence that I kept "Mary" cued up to begin with, as I used to amaze diehard fans with it [No copies were ever made for anyone, much to many a collector's ire, some who even went so far as to tell me that they wished I never played it for them if I wouldn't subsequently bless them with a copy. I guess they didn't understand the notion "Experience is nine tenths of possession"!]
Hall immediately started humming to the opening strains of the song, and at the moment the vocal came in started singing to the tape, instantaneously registering extreme amazement on his face to find he was dueting with himself!
Nonetheless, he performed the whole song in this fashion, with the tape, for his audience of two. You can imagine what an amazing moment that was!!!
When the song ended, he asked me where I had gotten this, and I told him that all things Fripp somehow seemed to find their way to me, being a super avid fan of said musician.
I returned to the area behind my counter, flipped the tape, and began the 2nd version. Hall looked at me with a mixture of askance and "put-upon-ness" for the few seconds it took to get to Capella's sax joining in with Fripp's guitar. At that point he exclaimed, "I've never heard this!" and listened in amazement to this trio version.
When it was finished, he said he had to have a copy of this. Tongue firmly in cheek, I told him that there were likely all sorts of legal reasons that I couldn't make him [and certainly not sell, not that I would've charged him anything] a copy. He responded that perhaps he could make a trade; what would I want? Before I could even respond, he said he had the perfect thing. He had tapes of Fripp SINGING [likely warbling] old English ribald folk songs, captured by chance when in the studio for the "Sacred Songs" sessions!
He gave me his managers # [oh no! Mottola] and told me to contact him through there.
Alas, it was never to be. All calls made to management mentioning that Daryl asked me to contact him through there were stonewalled.
I never told Fripp about this when I arrived at Claymont: I was there for serious reasons, not to beleaguer him as a "fan".
But you could send this story along to him if you wish, I'm sure he would get a kick out of it...
Best regards till next time,
Manny Maris"
OF COURSE, THIS VERSION OF "MARY" IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION!
Fripp including my edited email serves as a teaser [of the 60th Anniversary Ed? One may not live that long...] , and to remind us all that we can never live the experiences [no, not even just the recorded performances, 'studio' or otherwise] of another fully.

On June 10th Issue Project Room will be transformed from an oil tank into a nimble and comfortable UFO captained by Bradford Reed. Those inside will get pleasantly abducted. An experienced flight crew will generate the sonic backdrop on new and unusual instruments including the Pencilina, Appologetica, Guitaint, cello and Clacker-Sticks. The event will also feature exciting visuals both projected and voluntary.
