AND NOW FOR THE NEW DISCS...
ALTERED STATES [KAZUHISA UCHIHASHI/NASUNO MITSURU/YOSHIGAKI YASUHIRO] - Bluffs II (Doubt 109; Japan) Outstanding jazz/rock/punk/funk power trio that consistently knocks us out with each & every release. "A bit more spaced-out and restrained than many previous AS releases, but nevertheless still captivating. It still amazes me at times that these are all improvisations - this is some of the tightest, most focused improv of its type that I've heard in some time. If you're not familiar with the band, I'd still recommend the 1st record as an entry point, but this easily ranks among the top 3. Recommended!" -Mikey IQ Jones
CD $22
MAKIGAMI KOICHI - Moon Ether (Doubt 107; Japan) Koichi: voice, throat, theremin with moogerfogger. Perhaps the best solo vocal (& theremin) disc we've heard in quite a while.

A DMG EXCLUSIVE - THE 'HARDEDGE' LABEL!
HENRY THREADGILL'S ZOOID - Pop Start The Tape, Stop [Ltd sgnd & #'d LP] (Hardedge 01; USA) [ltd ed of 1000 signed & #'d copies, not released on CD!] henry threadgill: flute, bass flute, hubkaphone; liberty ellman: acoustic guitar; tarik benbrahim: oud; dana leong: cello; jose davila: tuba; elliot kavee: drums
Recorded with his current ensemble Zooid during the performance at the Engine 27 in New York City on September 12, 2003, this material is significant for two reasons, one being its limited release and second: It features Henry Threadgill on flutes (no alto saxophone here) and hubkaphone, a percussion instrument with eight vintage car hubcaps and three small gongs. Although he has already recorded hubkaphone back in the '70s on a few Air albums, this is actually the first time that the instrument's unique sound is being captured properly. For this particular performance the hubcaphone was pre-recorded, sometimes duplicated at the octave above or below, with no processing of the sound itself. It went through sixteen different speakers at different rates of speed thereby creating an unusual acoustic effect.
[The Hardedge label will be releasing Henry Threadgill's Zooid's new album, 'Out On Up' (cd only) in Summer 2006, which is the first studio recording of the group since 2001.]
Ltd Ed LP $38
HARDEDGE & GRAHAM HAYNES - Austere Geometry [Ltd 1000 copies] (Hardedge 02; USA) graham haynes: cornet, electronics; hardedge: sound design. Live at Makor, new york city, august 11, 2004
The music that Graham Haynes and Hardedge create explores the inner-workings of sound and synthesis, and is intended for the listener who can appreciate its bold sense of exploration, as well as the surreal beauty of the world it evokes.
The son of famous jazz drummer Roy Haynes, Graham was surrounded by jazz musicians his whole childhood. While his main instrument is the cornet, he is by no means making jazz music these days. He uses technology to create imaginative, subtle sonic environments. Even amidst electronic processing, his horn stands out, providing a level of expression that humanizes and elevates the synthetic sounds. Haynes intermingles compelling, hypnotic horn lines, experimental post-techno rhythms, world music grooves and ambient textures with commendable results.
Sound designer Hardedge's live-mix delves into the more intellectual elements of dark electronic music. His experimental approach to sound, space, and structure owes a lot to the fundamental principles of the Chicago's A.A.C.M. creative thinkers, especially Wadada Leo Smith's revolutionary multi-directional, non-progressive approach, and the use of the silence as a musical element. Paired with Haynes' unique sensibility, he creates psychedelic-like aural landscapes, made up of polyrhythms and random, transient frequencies.
A stunning chemistry between two uncompromising artists rarely found in today's art of sound.

DENNIS GONZALEZ & YELLS AT EELS w/ CARL SMITH/DEVON WELLS/KIM CORBET/BILL POHL - Geografia (Iror 01; USA) Dennis Gonzalez and incredible trio with his two sons - Aaron on acoustic and electric basses and Stefan on drums. With many special guests. Dennis Gonzalez is without a doubt one of the greatest of all living trumpeters, his sons are also pretty amazing and still quite young. Dennis will be performing at the Vision Fest in a few weeks (6/15) playing solo trumpet with dancer Maria Naidu. Long review next week.

JOHN LAW CORNUCOPIA ENSEMBLE - Out Of The Darkness (Slam 264; UK) Featuring Mr. Law's fabulous quartet with John on piano & compositions, Andy Sheppard on tenor & soprano saxes, Chris Laurence on double bass and Paul Clarvis on drums plus the Cornucopia Ensemble which includes a string quartet plus trumpet, trombone, oboe & bassoon. This gem was recorded live at the CBSO Hall in Birmingham, UK in October of 2004. John Law remains one of the under-recognized giants of British modern jazz/new music piano, as all of his dozen solos, duos, trios and quartet discs (FMR, Hat & Slam) can attest to. This is his first disc for a larger ensemble, his regular quartet plus an octet and it is a marvelous effort. The title piece is an epic-length work (46 minutes) and evolves through seven sections. The octet plays haunting harmonies that move back and forth in waves, as the quartet rise powerfully above, first with Andy's tenor and Paul's drums, then veteran bassist Chris Laurence (who is marvelous throughout), begins weaving as well. The quartet and octet swirl mysteriously together, with John's thoughtful writing holding it all together. There are a number of inspired solos from different players throughout this long eventful work, trumpeter Bruce Nockles, Andy Sheppard's saxes and John Law's great piano. Mr. Law's composing and direction has evolved and matured with grace and immense creativity. The entire 12-piece ensemble is so well-integrated, that they sound like they've been playing together for many years. I am reminded at times of the Neil Ardley, the legendary British jazz and classical music composer and conductor, who a half-dozen gems during his long career, yet rarely got the recognition he well deserved. Nearly 79-minutes long and superb throughout. - BLG

STEFANO PASTOR QUARTET - Transmutations (Slam 512; UK) Featuring Stefano Pastor acoustic violin & percussion, Stefano Calcagno trombone, Piero Leveratto double bass and Maurizio Borgia drums. On 'Transmutations', Pastor's second CD, the ten tracks take material from diverse sources - Mozart to Ornette to Coltrane to Jobim, a show tune and of course the blues - 'transmuted' into excellent jazz vehicles, as well as six originals by the leader. I can't say that I'm familiar with any members of this Italian quartet, but you must admit that the instrumentation is unusual, a violin and trombone in the frontline, with no piano, just double-bass and drums. Ornette's "Bird Food" opens and swings nicely, with spirited solos from the trombone and violin. Mr. Pastor twists the notes/strings on his violin in the same way that Ornette does when he also picks up the violin on rare occasion. Pastor writes quirky songs that move in unexpected ways. With no pianist in sight, their bassist is often the central force here and he is a formidable player, strong solos as well as letting those notes ring or sing the enchanting melodies, stretching out the spirit within. John Coltrane's "Crescent" is done some rather poignant, bluesy passion featuring a long, touching solo from Pastor's violin. While the violin and trombone play the theme to "I Fall in Love Too Easily", the bass solos and centers the tune through its entirety. Piero's bass pumps hard on and swings masterfully on Pastor's "Vucciria", with more spirited solos from the violin and trombone. Mr. Pastor sings Jobim's "Esquecendo Voce" exquisitely as the violin and bass play melancholy harmonies around his soft, sad voice. A quaint conclusion to a modest gem. - BLG

JELLOSLAVE PLAYED A KNOCK-OUT SET IN OUR STORE LAST SUNDAY - AN ACOUSTIC QUINTET LED BY TWO CELLOS, WITH SAX, DRUM KIT, AND TABLAS, THEY EXPLORED A TEXTURAL RANGE FROM CLASSICAL TO POP WITH GREAT APLOMB. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU CHECK OUT THEIR [NON-ACOUSTIC] 1st RELEASE..
JELLOSLAVE [MICHELLE KINNEY/JACQUELINE FERRIER-ULTAN/GREG SCHUTTE & TOM HAMBLETON] With MICHAEL FERRIER/GEORGE CARTWRIGHT - Touch It (Sugarfoot 02; USA) With Jelloslave, cellists Jacqueline Ferrier-Ultan and Michelle Kinney use all 8 amplified strings to sing, squawk, scream, growl and purr their way through an eclectic repertoire ranging from Bach to Led Zep, to their own improvisational, and jazz-influenced compositions. Their sound reveals their collective professional experience with some of the great names in new music today, including (on the short list...) Henry Threadgill, Brandon Ross, George Cartwright, Myra Melford, Anthony Cox and Butch Morris. "Everything is moving, thrumming, getting somewhere mysteriously in the music of JelloSlave, where it's not so much love's fingers you feel but the tendons of the groin and a great bridge lifting or lowering, its reflection turning to something else in the cloudy rapid river." - Lightsey Darst

ELECTROPOLIS - Electropolis (Innova 642; USA) Free experimental rock? Buzzed-out, Bootsy-esque grooves with a foot in the punk-rock gutter? Ambient beauty smashed against a wall of thick rhythmic thunder? That's the kind of alchemy that's been occurring since April 2000, when this Minneapolis foursome electrified the name of their hometown to form Electropolis. It's funky and soulful, while still riding a quirky jagged edge. Think James Chance-type energy but smoothed-out, Bill Laswell-style. Or maybe Parliament meets Naked City in a back-alley rumble refereed by MMW.
The record was mixed by NEVERWAS (a/k/a Chris Cunningham)- known for his work with James Chance, Gavin Friday, Hal Willner, Anton Fier, and many others. "Full marks for ambition, guys. In the spirit of Bill Frisell's work with the films of Buster Keaton, saxophonist Michael Ferrier's Electropolis (with Michael O'Brien on bass, Steve Roehm on percussion and Kelly Rossum on trumpet) has already created spontaneous soundtracks for Fritz Lang's Metropolis and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and now they've released a slinky, spooky out-there disc so you can take their misshapen electronic/acoustic grooves home with you. A mix of improvised and pre-arranged compositions, Electroplis' self-titled debut is in the vein of exploratory-yet-groovy fare like David Fiuczynski's Screaming Headless Torsos, Medeski Martin and Wood's classic Friday Afternoon in the Universe or the Twin Cities own Fantastic Merlins (featuring Ferrier's wife, Jacqueline Ferrier-Ultan from Jelloslave, on cello). Rather than relying on overdubs, Ferrier and Kelly Rossum simply plug in the normally acoustic saxophone and trumpet (respectively) to create the electrosax and electrumpet, and away they go into territory normally reserved for electric guitars and keyboards. "Dagobah" comes off like Yoda driving War's low rider as a trumpet (I think) sweeps through a phase modulator and the sax bumps out spastic bursts through a digital delay. It's moody, atmospheric stuff that knows when to strut and when to break ankles, the kind of thing that would be great as the soundtrack to ... oh, I don't know... a German expressionist silent movie. What? They already did that?
Awesome."

CARNEYBALL JOHNSON [RALPH CARNEY/KIMO BALL/SCOTT JOHNSON/ALLEN WHITMAN] - Carneyball Johnson (Akron Cracker; USA) Carneyball Johnson, the big-groove freeform live electric powerhouse releases their first, full-length, studio recording -- Carneyball Johnson! The band is comprised of multi-instrumentalist Ralph Carney (Tom Waits, Jonathan Richman, Jim White, Oranj Symphonette, Tin Huey), guitarist Kimo Ball, percussionist & drummer Scott Johnson and bassist Allen Whitman (The Mermen, Henry Kaiser). Carneyball Johnson mixes it up, pulling on their favorite music from The Yardbirds, Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, Thelonius Monk & Desmond Dekker, and others, as springboards to improvisation; keeping it fresh and spontaneous.
While Ralph Carney's musical career has often found him adding colors to other artists' work, his new project Carneyball Johnson is a group of strong musicians who are creating their own unique brand of instrumental prowess. They take some of their life-long influences out to new places that meld their diverse backgrounds in rock, jazz, world music and surf. Carneyball Johnson's humor sets them apart from the horde.

JAMES BEAUDREAU - Java Street Bagatelles [Ltd. edition of 500 #numbered copies] (Workbench 01; USA) James Beaudreau, veteran of such groups as 'The Billy Nayer Show' and 'Grand Mal', presents here his first album on his own: 24 solo acoustic guitar pieces, 20 of which are totally improvised.
"A collection of 24 brief, homespun instrumental acoustic & electric guitar improvisations, with elements of folk, the knottiness of The Old Bailey, and nice occasional touches of Brazilian rhythmic weightlessness. There's a reflective, almost questing tone to many of these pieces; one gets the impression that as he's playing, Beaudreau isn't necessarily thinking about the music as object, per se, but instead on outside elements of a personal nature which in turn drive the music TOWARD something - a frame of mind, a place once visited, a fading memory, or simply a conclusion. With that said, the album ends with a pregnant pause and an uncertain note, left hanging and unresolved, offering no answers. This is beautiful, deeply felt, PERSONAL music, the exact flipside to the more clinical "we showed up, we played, let's put it out" sort of improv records that've been flooding my eardrums lately and boring me to tears. Highest recommendation!" - Mikey IQ Jones.

DUB TRIO - New Heavy (ROIR 8298; USA) With guest MIKE PATTON on the cut "Not Alone" plus 2 music videos as bonus material! Dub Trio is one of the few bands that can open for Mike Patton (featured on this record), reggae legends The Wailers, hip-hop MC Beans, electro-pioneers Meat Beat Manifesto, firebrand Capleton, jazz-funkers Soulive, and electronica maestro Prefuse 73 (all of which they did in 2005). It speaks volumes about their music's versatility; one minute it's gummy dub, the next it's chest-beating, chug-a-lug metal, shredding punk, and bleeped-out electronic psychedelia. At its best, Dub Trio's music is simultaneously all these and more. Their sophomore album, aptly-titled New Heavy, is undoubtedly a rock record that retains enough dubby elements to save the boys a name-change.

BLACK OX ORKESTAR - Nisht Azoy (Constellation 038; Canada) "Picks up where 2004's Ver Tanzt left off - more percussion, a harsher sound, songs of love and war that stretch out into extended sonic and lyrical explorations. We continue to raid Balkan, Central Asian, Arabic, Czech and other sources to give teeth to old Jewish songs, as well as composing new pieces, both hard-hitting and tender. We also explore the larger ensemble, gathering together everyone we know with a string or wind instrument to raise the folk ballad 'Tsvey Taybelakh' (Two Doves) up to the sky. Nisht Azoy is the melancholy and uncompromising sound of our mongrel music splitting at the seams, the boat creaking as we drag our friends on board for a trip to who knows where."

FUSHITSUSHA /HAINO KEIJI - 1991.9.26 19:15-20:08 [DVD] (PSF 002; Japan) NTSC region free. "26th September 1991 saw a titanic showdown at the Shibuya La Mama club in Tokyo. Keiji Haino's tumultuous Fushitsusha brought their epochal de/re-construction of rock to ringside to tussle it out with John Zorn's international hardcore skronk trio Pain Killer. The night was being documented for a Pain Killer live album (released as Rituals), which meant that Fushitsusha got to benefit from an unusually high-quality recording. Previously available as a PSF video, but out of print for the last few years on that unwieldy medium, this is the document of Fushitsusha's jaw-dropping set that night -- and still the only official Fushitsusha visuals available. A digest-sized version of everything that is great about the group, somehow squeezing the Grand Canyon breadth and depth of Haino's ambition into a far shorter set than they usually play. Raining down like manna from heaven for the converted, 53 minutes worth of prime Fushitsusha live, loud and leveling. What more do you need to know?" -- Alan Cummings

SANJAH - Musen/Izu (PSF 8023; Japan) Kan Mikami: vocals, guitar; Masayoshi Urabe alto, harmonica, bass blockfloten, accordion, piccolo, chains; Toshi Ishizuka drums, percussion. "Ultra-heavy first album by new PSF super group, Sanja, consisting of gravel 'n' glass-voiced crooner Kan Mikami, the scene's heaviest tub thumper Toshi Ishizuka, and alto terrorist and veritable rock 'n' roll breather Masayoshi Urabe. The three first played together at a concert to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of PSF Records last year, and the intensity of the heat they generated has already become the stuff of Tokyo underground legend. The trio was quickly hustled into a studio to record their first album and the results are now available for the listening pleasure of all of you who couldn't make the gig. There's a purity of improvised one-mind destruction on display here that is humbling to witness. All three are recently playing at unprecedented heights -- Mikami's vocals and Urabe's alto carve great mercury swathes through the moist air, while Ishizuka deep-shifts tectonic plates beneath their feet. Veteran Mikami watchers are in for a treat of their own, as the master revisits 'Karasu' from his debut album for the first time in 35 years." -- Alan Cummings
CD $20
MAKATO KAWABATA - Inui (VHF 095; USA) "Long-planned reissue of Makoto Kawabata's first solo LP, from way back in 2000 (or roughly 100 releases ago, in Kawabata terms). Originally released by the mighty SIWA label in a tiny, hand-printed edition of 300, this has long been the most sought-after Kawabata item, pretty much impossible to track down without a wallet full of eBay slush funds. The music, as on all the releases in Kawabata's Inui series, is intensely personal and introspective, with long, softly focused tracks featuring acoustic stringed instruments from around the globe (including violin, sarangi, oud, sitar, bouzouki, lyra, shou, and nei). French filmmaker, musician and longtime Acid Mothers Temple collaborator Audrey Ginestet lends her crystal voice to the album opener, 'Shin.' This new, limited reissue is packaged in a fabulous multi-color, hand-screened mini-gatefold printed by Alan Sherry of SIWA."
CD $15
PELT - Skullfuck/Bestio Tergum Degero (VHF 098; USA) "Now available to all, a new pressing of the extremely limited edition live CD previously attainable only on the band's 2006 European tour. Contrary to the Grateful Dead reference in the title, Skullfuck is a tight recording of a single, intense November 2005 performance from NYC's Knitting Factory. The set begins with an epic group arrangement of Jack Rose's 'Calais To Dover,' with Rose's 12-string shadowed by Mike Gangloff's fiddle, and the thick drone of Mikel Dimmick and Pat Best's harmonium and srutis. The three-part 'Bestio' suite follows, with the group moving to Tibetan bowls and gongs, building up a huge sheet of sound which peaks in a brief 'encore' of wild gong smashing. This new edition is packaged in a gatefold 'eco-wallet' with cover art designed by fabric and fiber-artist Emily Keown."

NMPERIGN/JASON LESCALLEET - Love Me Two Times [2 CD set] (Intransitive 026) "The highly anticipated double-CD epic by Jason Lescalleet (tapeloops) and nmperign (Bhob Rainey - soprano sax, and Greg Kelley - trumpet). The result of six years of live and studio collaboration, LM2X is by far the most ambitious and uncompromising statement yet by this formidable trio. The album begins as a more-or-less straight documentary-style recording of group improvisation, but don't get too comfortable... over the course of the next two hours, the ground steadily shifts, the bottom drops out, and any expectations a listener may have had going in are thoroughly trampled. Join the group as they visit art galleries, rock clubs, living rooms, at least one church, and the kitchen of a famous chef, before finally putting a fist through an amplifier. Fans will find the usual ingredients here: crusty old reel-to-reel tape decks, cheap keyboards, amplified and acoustic horns...but rude tape splices, violent humor, and confusingly degraded fidelity push the music far from safe territory. The visceral drama of LM2X does not neatly spell out its intentions, nor does it signal exactly what it has up its sleeve. It exists in its own universe, demands repeat listens and to be taken on its own terms."

Here they have perhaps their most traditional big band sound, with long ever-changing instrumental pieces that have the Arkestra's ultra-unique combined African and Egyptian vibe. Lots of percussion, beautiful vocals by June Tyson, amazing solos by both John Gilmore and Marshall Allen as well as other band members. 117 minutes.

SUN RA & His ARKESTRA - Live At The Roadhouse: In Concert Vol 5 [DVD] (Transparency 174; USA) [NTSC ALL REGION] The Arkestra is smokin' hot! Sun Ra's gifts as arranger, bandleader and soloist are never more apparent. Just when you think the band couldn't possibly get any hotter, it all floats down to several Ra piano solos, then either piano/trumpet or piano/sax duets, then back to the entire band - even hotter each time 'round - giving way to several Sun Ra vocals, including "This World Is Not My Home" and even "Let's Go Fly A Kite". June Tyson plays violin, and the second set ends with a great 'African lounge' piece. No other group can mix traditional and 'outside' with such genius. 124 minutes

NEW FROM MODE
JOHN CAGE//ULRICH KREIGER - Vol. 35: A Cage Of Saxophones - Works for Saxophone 2 (mode 160; USA) Ulrich Krieger follows up his successful A Cage of Saxophones 1 volume with the second installment of Cage works for saxophone(s), spanning a period of over 50 years.
"Ulrich Krieger follows up his successful A Cage of Saxophones 1 volume with the second installment of Cage works for saxophone(s), spanning a period of over 50 years. For this volume, Krieger combines works specifically composed for saxophone with works of no specified instrumentation that are suited for saxophones and winds. This CD collects three rarely heard early works, all written without indications for specific instruments. Krieger has arranged them here for his ensemble of saxophones and other instruments. For the middle period works, Krieger has excerpted the solo instrumental parts related to saxophones from the scores to Concert for Piano and Orchestra and Atlas Eclipticalis - Cage permitted the option for the various instrumental parts to be performed as solos. The late works are covered by Two, originally composed for flute and piano, here premiered in the Cage-sanctioned version for saxophone."
*Acclaimed German saxophonist Ulrich Krieger studied classical/contemporary saxophone, composition, and electronic music at the Hochschule der Kunste (Berlin) and the Manhattan School of Music (New York). Since 1990 he works freelance as interpreter, improviser, composer, and rock musician. He worked with leading artists such as LaMonte Young, Phill Niblock, David First, Lee Ranaldo, Elliott Sharp, Mario Bertoncini, Merzbow, and many others.

AND REPRESSED WITH ADDITIONAL MATERIAL...
LUCIANO BERIO - Vol. 1: The Great Works for Voice [expanded 2nd pressing] (mode 48; USA) A major reissue from Mode with an added world premiere. Added to this reissue is the first recording of 'Quattro Canzoni Poplari,' four arrangements of Italian folk songs that hark back to late medieval Sicilian and Genovese texts and tune. 24-bit re-mastered sound.
This was the first volume in Mode's series dedicated to Berio. Performed by Christine Schadeberge (soprano voice) and Musician's Accord, this consists of works written from '53 to '68, with Cathy Berberian in mind. "Folk Songs" is a suite of 11 songs for flute, clarinet, harp, viola, cello & percussion and was intended to undermine the expectations of the "avant-garde." This is still bound to throw off listeners expecting experimental vocal work, but the following 45 minutes of material is essential work for those interested in the genre. "Sequenza III" is for solo female voice, as a part of Berio's series for virtuosos. "Chamber Music" features sung poems by Joyce, accompanied by clarinet, cello & harp. "Circles" features e. e. cummings texts, accompanied by harp & percussion.
His association with the legendary mezzo-soprano Cathy Berberian led to the creation of all but one of the works recorded on this CD--a selection of his greatest vocal compositions collected on one disc for the first time! A wondrous musical and audiophile journey.
The recital begins with Berio's magical, wry Folk Songs . One of his most popular works based on tunes from America, France, Italy, Sicily and Azerbaijan, their folk veneer covers many musical surprises, including hints of minimalism.

JOHN CAGE - Sonatas and Interludes Vol. 1 (Fylkingen 1010; EEC) "The recordings of John Cage: Sonatas and Interludes (1946-48) with Yuji Takahashi on prepared piano was originally made in 1965 and released on two LPs 1966. It was Fylkingen Records first releases with the intention to make documentations of Fylkingens concerts in public, and a test of the sound expert Stig Carlssons thoughts about recording techniques. The sonatas and interludes are an attempt to express in music the 'permanent emotions' of Indian tradition: the heroic, the erotic, the wondrous, the mirthful, sorrow, fear, anger, the odious and their common tendency to toward tranquillity."

AKE HODELL - Verbal Brainwash and Other Works [3 CD set] (Fylkingen 1018; EEC) "This is the authorized edition of the collected text-sound compositions of Ake Hodell. It includes all titles which Hodell himself has described as text-sound compositions. The collection is taken from the time of the premiere of General Buddy-Buddy and Presentarms in 1963 up to Spirit of Ecstasy from 1977. During this period, Ake also worked with radio drama that often had certain parallels to text-sound composition, but never had any doubts himself as to which of his works were text-sound and which were drama. This CD-box is a living example taken from the most vital period in the history of the Music Department of the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation (Sveriges Radio, SR) and a monument to the fruitful collaboration between Fylkingen and SR. I enjoyed close collaboration with Ake Hodell during the work on this production. We had our last conversation about two days before his death. He had approved all three discs and had the day before received a 30% scale copy of the sleeve, which he had managed somehow to proof read, probably with the help of a magnifying glass and considerable exertion. We communicated what changes should be made and thereafter he approved the release. He left all further responsibility with me and bade me farewell, the import of which I did not realize at the time. Ake listened patiently to all the new edited versions of the pieces included here, always giving fresh views. All changes to the original tapes were made in cooperation with Ake."

TEXT-SOUND COMPOSITIONS [V.A.] - A Stockholm Festival [5 CD Box Set] (Fylkingen 1024; EEC) "Fylkingen Records in collaboration with the Swedish Radio released a series of LP records with text-sound compositions between the years of 1968-77. All of these were documentations of the international festival Text-Sound Compositions A Stockholm Festival, which Fylkingen presented in Stockholm several times during these years. Most of the LPs were only pressed in batches of about 400-500 records, and most of the LPs sold out during the festivals. A re-release had long been planned, and this 5 CD box marks the complete re-release of the complete recordings. Apart from the 5 CDs with in all ca 6 hours of material, the CD box contains a 60 page booklet with essays by Teddy Hultberg and Sten Hanson, as well as historical photographs taken by Lutfi Ozkok during the festivals.
The term text-sound composition was coined in 1967 in Sweden by the composers/writers Lars-Gunnar Bodin and Bengt Emil Johnsson, and was meant to serve to name a genre that was a vital art form in the no man's land between sound, poetry, and music. Text-sound compositions had influences from previous modernistic waves such as futurism, Dadaism, Lettrism, etc., but perhaps the most important influence was the Swedish poet and visual artist Oyvind Fahlstrom, who had just over a decade earlier coined the term 'concrete poetry'. The term concrete poetry related to Pierre Schaeffer's concrete music, and it is somewhere between concrete poetry and concrete music that text-sound compositions appear. The birth of the electronic music studio and concrete music's idea that every sound can be freed from its original context and given a new meaning when it is reworked and put together with other sounds in the electronic music studio became the catharsis for text-sound composition. In the electronic music studio, voice and language sounds can be broken down, unleashed, and then fused together to become a poetry that had never been heard before. Certain text-sound composers would come to work only with pure lingual sounds, but most eventually came to integrate lingual sounds with other sounds, both concrete and electronic.
The CD box contains works by the following text-sound composers and sound poets: Charles Amirkhanian, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Svante Bodin, Henri Chopin, Bob Cobbing, Francois Dufrene, Gust Gils, Jarl och Sonja Hammarberg-Akesson, Sten Hanson, Bernard Heidsieck, C. Christer Hennix, Ake Hodell, Bengt Emil Johnsson, Sandro Key-Aberg, Bengt af Klintberg, Ilmar Laaban, Annea Lockwood & Harvey Matusow, Arrigo Lora-Totino, Gherasim Luca, Arne Mellnas, Franz Mon, Ladislav Novak, Diter Rot & Emmet Williams, Erik Thygesen, Paul de Vree."

B.L.G. & M.A.P. REVIEWS OF RECENT RELEASES
ESPERS - II (Drag City) This Philadelphia sextet is incredibly conscious of their place in a tradition established in the late 60s. The tradition is forming a hermetic, committed collective creative entity with a sharply etched identity that is tweaked and developed with painstaking care and periodically documented as an album that feels like a definitive and complete crystallization of a developmental phase, an album that can be endlessly analyzed and savoured in relation to the similarly discrete totalities of its predecessors and successors. With their second album of original compositions, Espers has struck that magic balance between continuity and change. The primary differences lie in the increased role for Otto Hauser's drumkit and percussion, which adds an understated rhythmic presence a bit like Pentangle without the limber jazziness, and the greater presence of Greg Weeks' seriously fantastic vintage guitar and analog synth sounds that resurrect the slightly dark and spacy textures of early 70s experimental Italian rock like Franco Battiato, PFM, Banco, Osanna, etc. However, unlike say, Devendra Banhart's Cripple Crow, Espers' gentle transition from "folk" to "folk-rock" (excuse the four-letter words) isn't a lapse into MOR throwaways. The essential spirit of their earlier work is not only intact, but intensified, from the solemn lilt to the dreamy haze that starts to take on a sinister hue at times (though the feeling is more druggy and not the spine-tingling mysticism of Comus or Spires That In The Sunset Rise).
Despite the yesteryear vibe, I'm not aware of anything even loosely similar to the dreamy melancholy of either this album or the debut, with the sole exception of some of the non-crappy songs on Gary Higgin's Red Hash. The deep originality of the Espers sound deserves to be noted. That said, my favorite song on Espers II, "Cruel Storm", is an exception with a light, riveting beauty that would fit right into Fotheringay or Holidays-era Fairport Convention, and I don't speak lightly when I say that Meg Baird's vocal line evokes the spirit of Sandy Denny.
Greg Weeks' production on Espers II is frankly stunning in its tapestry of lucid details derived from over a dozen instruments. Helena Espvall-Santoleri's masterful cello has an orchestral fullness in the mix, and Brooke Sietinsons and Meg Baird's interlocking acoustic guitars (the instrumental core of the group) are crisp and sparkling even amidst the layered and woozy textures--check out the plangent harmonics of "Dead Queen"! If you haven't indulged in the melancholic splendors of Espers yet, start here and work backwards. I just can't get enough of this utterly immersive and beautiful masterpiece and I'm certain it will be a comforting presence in our record collections for decades to come. - Michael Anton Parker

DAVID MURRAY/MARCIN & BARTLOMIEJ "BRAT" OLES - Circles Live in Cracow (NotTwo 749; Poland) This session was organized by the Oles brothers, Marcin & Brat, from Poland and one of the finest new rhythm teams in Europe, having recorded with Theo Jorgensmann, Rudi Mahall, Ken Vandermark, Erik Friedlander & Emmanuelle Somer. The Oles brothers wrote five of the seven tunes here, with one by Mr. Murray and one by Ornette Coleman. Brat's "Go Home" opens with spacious playing from all three players and sizzling tenor from David Murray. Brat's "Double Tone" is next and features some fine (Dolphy-esque) bass clarinet from Mr. Murray and more inventive playing from the bass and drums. "Mbizo" was written for the late South African contrabass legend, Johnny Dyani, who David played with. It is a lovely, haunting piece with some especially soulful tenor from Mr. Murray and more intricate work from the brothers Oles. Marcin's "Fair Play" features some incredibly propulsive work from the bass & drums as David's spirited, free-wheeling tenor keeps pace with that dynamic duo. The title piece, "Circles" by Brat, has a most memorable theme with all three players taking great unaccompanied solos. David plays some righteous, haunting bass clarinet on "Thunderbird", a most hypnotic piece centered by Marcin's great double bass. Ornette's "Law Years" is a sprawling work with the massive trio spinning intensely together, flying high and wide and strongly connected as they sail higher and higher. An incredible trio date from David Murray and the colossal Oles brothers, Marcin and Brat. - BLG

TRIO 3 [OLIVER LAKE/REGGIE WORKMAN/ANDREW CYRILLE] - Time Being (Intakt 106; Switzerland) This is the fourth fabulous offering by this phenomenal all-star trio featuring Oliver Lake on alto & sopranino saxes, Reggie Workman on contrabass and Andrew Cyrille on drums. This is a superbly recorded studio date in which all three members contribute compositions, as well as the instant compositions of focused group improv. Right from the first note of "A Chase", we know we are in for something special. The trio takes off for the stratosphere together. Like wow! No matter how "free" the trio ascends, they seem to be on the same wavelength. They complete each other's sentences on Reggie's "Medea", swirling and inter-connecting on various levels. The start and stop theme is rather like a piece from Dolphy's classic 'Out to Lunch' album. Cyrille's "Tight Rope" is a fine, contemplative piece that simmers just right with mysterious bowed bass, nimble drums and lovely, somber alto from Mr. Lake. "Equilateral" is an aptly titled piece in which the trio plays naked solos one after the other yet the thread runs throughout unifying it as one constant flow of work. Oliver is featured on sopranino on "Time Was", another freer piece where the trio spins its web around one another, never losing sight of there magical connection. The excellent liner notes by jazz scholar Gary Giddins is another plus. There are no uninspired moments found anywhere on this fantastic treasure, so why not let this disc improve your day. - BLG

DAVE DOUGLAS - El Trilogy [Limited Edition CD-R] (RCA/BMG; USA) [re-edition pressing] An exclusive for DMG, not sold anywhere else on the planet. Although contracted by RCA/BMG, BMG chose not to release/distribute this, but instead allows Dave to privately market the copies made through us! This is modern dance music composed and played by Dave for three different Trisha Brown choreographed dances. The players include Mark Feldman, Guy Klusevsek, Greg Cohen, Susie Ibarra, and Gregory Tardy. One of the most interesting Douglas items, both compositionally and playing-wise!
"This is Dave Douglas' music composed for Trisha Brown's choreography and premiered at Lincoln Center just last week. This release is broken into three sections for three different dance performances first done in July of 1999 through June of 2000. The three different ensembles include the collective personnel of Dave on trumpet, Mark Feldman on violin, Guy Klucevsek on accordion & Greg Cohen on bass (a/k/a Charms of the Night Sky) in the first section plus Greg Tardy on clarinet & tenor sax and Susie Ibarra on drums - in the second and third sections. The first section is called "Five Part Weather Invention" and can also by found on Dave's last Charms of the Night Sky cd 'Thousand Evenings' - a different version. The first section is quite a charming mix of eastern-European gypsy-like melodies with some modern classical flourishes. All of this music is completely acoustic, which is an impressive endeavor - the balance is perfect. Mark Feldman takes one of his amazing solos on "Bounding Lines" which is quite the marvel while the quartet play those great fractured themes for splattered notes and coughing just right on the same piece. The second part is "Rapture to Leon James" for Dave, Greg Tardy, Greg Cohen & Susie Ibarra. It begins with Susie's splashing cymbals, mysterious mallets and ethnic percussion work followed by the delicate rustling of tenor sax and trumpet - soon playing Dave's haunting then quick paced theme. This piece moves through a few evolving episodes from a swinging section with a classic solo from Dave, the rhythm team ever tight and focused. The second part of this section has those wacky fragments that remind me of animals speaking amongst themselves - natural and connected. The third section is called "Groove and Countermove" and it is performed by the entire sextet in five parts. "Prairie" begins this section with an elegant and lovely theme - Dave plays exquisite muted trumpet with the violin, accordion, clarinet and subtle rhythm team providing quaint support. "Escher" starts with Susie's rustling and refined percussion with small clouds of accordion and violin floating through. "Spring" has an odd, melancholy theme which seems slightly twisted, evolving in unexpected directions with a marvelous solo violin section. "Anton" is more difficult and very short, with its complex lines spiraling as one instrument completes the other's lines. "Fin", the last part, spins in quick lines with the tenor, violin, trumpet and accordion ascending together as the bass and drums push the energy from below. A powerful ending for superb disc. AND FINALLY BACK IN STOCK FROM RONALD SHANNON JACKSON:
POWER TOOLS [RONALD SHANNON JACKSON/BILL FRISELL/MELVIN GIBBS] - Live In London (Self Released; USA) [CD-R] Powertools were a great and rather unlikely jazz/rock power-trio from NYC that made only one album on Antilles in 1987, long out of print and, until recently [Shannon Jackson's upcoming CD-R reissue] no longer available in any format. They also toured Europe, and I caught a fine set of theirs at the old Knit here in the U.S. This is the first of three live Powertools discs that we will be carrying and it is an auspicious disc to savor. Each player composes 2 or 3 of the seven long pieces here. Commencing with an exquisite, laid back song on track 1, they start to take off on Frisell's "Strange Meeting" with Bill's guitar buring and twisting those notes inside-out in his own distinctive way. Melvin and Ronald make an immensely powerful rhythm team, they are truly explosive, ever-tight and resourceful here. Track 3 starts with a most impressive electric bass solo from Melvin and then turns into one of those lovely, mellow Frisell-like tunes from the mid-nineties. On track 4, Ronald is playing some sort double-reed called a "schalmai", while the guitar and bass swirl around him. Melvin plays at his most majestic with Bill building into a frenzy. Melvin takes a fine finger-popping bass solo, as Bill & Ronald then swirl around him. Track 5 is one of those great super-quick, intense pieces, bound to keep all those fusion freaks smiling. If I didn't know better, I would think that this was written by Zorn for Naked City a short time later. What is most impressive about this trio is that there is no leader, each member's abilities are well-balanced and used just right. It is sad that the band didn't last long enough to record a second album, no doubt another great one. Frisell soon left and was replaced by Miles Davis alumni Pete Cosey, another odd choice. - BLG

POWER TOOLS [RONALD SHANNON JACKSON/BILL FRISELL/MELVIN GIBBS] - Power Tools (Self Released; USA) [2nd edition CD-R] Experimental, hard-edged and intriguing trio that links surging rock, free-form jazz and funk. Power Tools was a one-off semi-supergroup that, if it didn't quite fulfill expectations, at least offered up this enjoyable album. It's an odd mixture; drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson was in the midst of his time with the free-metal-noise band Last Exit, bassist Melvin Gibbs was involved with various avant funk bands (including that of Arto Lindsay), and the pre-Naked City Bill Frisell was beginning to delve into that hazy area between country/Americana, jazz, and noise. Things don't gel so well when the band gets closer to free improv, as Frisell's inherent gauziness conflicts and deadens the impact of Jackson's more rambunctious approach. Things work better with the more song-oriented pieces, particularly those penned by Gibbs. His "Wadmalaw Island" and "Howard Beach Memoirs" both strike an appropriate balance, allowing Frisell to build on more solid structures while at the same time leaving room for Jackson to embroider freely. Much of the recording ping-pongs between these two poles: pleasant, if overly languid pastoral songs and higher-energy pieces that never quite rev up high enough. The closing rendition of "Unchained Melody," a song dear to Frisell's heart, is very effective. Strange Meeting, an apt title, is worth checking out for Frisell fans who only came to hear his work in the following years. ~ Brian Olewnick, AMG

PAUL BEAVER & BERNIE KRAUSE - The Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music (Nonesuch/Collector's Choice; USA) Conceived by Bernie Krause and Elektra label founder Jac Holzman on a plane ride to the Monterey Pop Festival, where Beaver & Krause were slated to demonstrate the newfangled Moog synthesizer, this double-album was true to its title, an instructional record on how to create electronic sounds using the Moog, complete with a 16-page 'syllabus' detailing signal generation, voltage control, modulation and filtering (a PDF of which you can view at www.ccmusic.com/room.cfm?id=127). And, as such, the record only included one actual composition, 'Peace Three'; the rest of the tracks had such titles as 'Triangular Waveform; White Sound Tuned Filters; Low-Frequency Sawtooth-Tuning Through Harmonics', and 'Series of Sub-Audible Constants'. Over the years, this 1968 release has for obvious reasons become quite the underground classic, an artifact from a time when anything in recorded music seemed possible - and often was. Has to be heard!
Composers and synth players Paul Beaver and Bernie Krause were among the most high-profile electronic music acts of the late '60s, recording a series of LPs distinguished not only by their groundbreaking studio advances but also by the presence of notables including Gerry Mulligan and Mike Bloomfield. Krause -- a onetime member of the legendary folk group the Weavers -- was working as a staff producer at Elektra Records when he met Beaver, a former jazz musician; under the name Beaver & Krause, they began assembling electronic pieces employing spoken-word passages, acoustic instruments, tape loops and improvisational techniques, debuting in 1968 with The Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music. After 1969's Ragnarok Electric Funk, the duo issued In a Wild Sanctuary a year later; 1971's Gandharva -- recorded live in San Francisco's Grace Cathedral and featuring cameos from Mulligan and Bloomfield as well as Bud Shank and Ronnie Montrose -- was the most popular of their releases. After 1972's All Good Men, Beaver recorded the solo LP Perchance to Dream; sadly, it was his final work -- he suffered a fatal heart attack on January 16, 1975 at the age of 49. Krause later resurfaced as a noted expert in environmental sound recording. ~ Jason Ankeny, AMG

PAUL BEAVER & BERNIE KRAUSE - In A Wild Sanctuary (Warner Bros/Collector's Choice; USA) 'In a Wild Sanctuary' was Beaver & Krause's first album for Warner Bros., and in its own way it was every bit as groundbreaking as their 'Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music', using sounds found in nature (or, more accurately, in the city of San Francisco) as a compositional element for the first time. Nowadays, of course, the use of nature sounds is commonplace, especially in New Age recordings, but back in the late '60s the idea was revolutionary. And this was far from a New Age record, employing such serious sessionmen as Dave Grusin, Howard Roberts and Bud Shank. The song titles give a clue as to what kind of unique listening experience you're in for: 'Walking Green Algae Blues; Another Part of Time; Spaced; Aurora Hominis; So Long as the Waters Flow; Salute to the Vanishing Bald Eagle; Sanctuary; And There Was Morning', and 'People's Park'.

PAUL BEAVER & BERNIE KRAUSE - Gandharva (Warner Bros/Collector's Choice; USA) 'Gandharva' continued Beaver & Krause's quest for new sounds and forms in music, as the second side of the record was recorded live inside of San Francisco's magnificent Grace Cathedral. "We were looking for long reverb times," says Krause in the notes, and they sure got 'em! They also experiment with jazz, blues, rock and even gospel styles, as the list of guest musicans - Ronnie Montrose, Mike Bloomfield and Gerry Mulligan - demonstrates. In short, it's another adventure in music from this most intrepid duo, finally on CD and ripe for rediscovery.

PAUL BEAVER & BERNIE KRAUSE - All Good Men (Warner Bros/Collector's Choice; USA) This 1972 record marked yet another change of direction for electronic music pioneers Paul Beaver and Bernie Krause, and a most unexpected one at that: a pop album! Or at least as close to pop as this duo would ever get, with a number of songs featuring vocals, spiced with Moog and even ragtime. A typically idiosyncratic end to their stay at Warner Bros.

ASH RA TEMPEL [KLAUS SCHULZE/MANUEL GOTTSCHING] - Ash Ra Tempel (Spalax 14244; France) The reissue of historic, early albums of Germany's legendary space/psych outfit is a legitimately great thing, and the network of people who continue to discover this stuff seems to expand daily with no let up. The first, self-titled, Ash Ra Tempel album, from 1971, is a flat-out massive overdriven psych monster. Formed by Klaus Schulze (on drums & electronics, after having left Tangerine Dream), guitarist Manuel Gottsching (who would remain the one constant with Ash Ra), and Hartmut Enke (bass), this is the most intense recording in their discography & an absolute must if you're interested in the early glories of Krautrock bliss.
CD $17
CLUSTER [DIETER MOEBIUS/HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS: a/k/a KLUSTER] - II (Spalax 14864; France) Cluster were key members during the formative years of the Krautrock movement. They initially released 2 LPs in '69/70 with the Kluster spelling that are amongst the earliest Teutonic pulse masterworks. Their first album with a "C" spelling was the s/t LP on Philips (currently o/p as a CD on Sky), before they moved over to the Brain label. This is their first of 2 for that label, from 1972, and is a great, confused space classic by this duo (Roedelius & Moebius). Utilizing primitive synthesizer whirls, hypnotic guitar/bass patterns, etc. The 12-minute "Im Suden" is especially masterful.
CD $17
CLUSTER [DIETER MOEBIUS/HANS-JOACHIM ROEDELIUS: aka KLUSTER] - Zuckerzeit (Spalax 14865; France) The 2nd Cluster album for Brain didn't come out until 1978, as a reunion of sorts for Roedelius & Moebius after a few years of working with M. Rother as Harmonia, and two collaborations with Brian Eno. The synthetics are less primitive and more serenely crafted, but this is still a fine insight into the later pulse-ticking mechanics of the scene.

GURU GURU - UFO (Spalax 14296; France) Classic 1st album from this leading proponent of Germany's psychedelic/art-rock underground! Guru Guru's debut album shows why the band, even if it never reached the levels of appreciation and influence the likes of Can or Neu! did, still maintained a healthy reputation over the moons for its early work. Opening number "Stone In" has a quite appropriate title for a starting track -- it is wonderfully tripped out, to be sure, and if Manuel Gottsching was more of a guitar god, Genrich kicks up a lot of frazzled noise. The principle of the Trepte/Neumeier rhythm section seems to have been "find loud weird grooves and then play them, sometimes chaotically." Again, they aren't Can's wickedly effective combination of Holger Czukay and Jaki Leibezeit, but they're not just falling over themselves either. The title track is the most memorable song, almost entirely eschewing conventional rhythm for an inward collapse of feedback and noise that sounds either like the Stooges' "LA Blues" even more strung out or early Main with a conventional band lineup. "Girl Call" and "Next Time See You at the Dalai" (a classic example of a just-groansome enough Krautrock pun that only Germans seemed to love) makes for a good combination, the increasing freakiness of the one leading into the start-stop chug and explosion of the latter. Genrich really gets to show off a bit on both, demonstrating that there is such a thing as technical ability that doesn't equal pointless fret abuse. "Der LSD-Marsch" is actually the most conventional of the tracks -- while a good-enough slow burn up to a freakout (mostly provided by Neumeier's drum solo), it's too short to be truly epic and not otherwise distinguishable from many similar songs by the likes of Amon Duul II, say. For all that, though, it ends this enjoyable effort well enough. - Ned Raggett, AMG

DON AND THE GOODTIMES: So Good (Rev-Ola 142; UK) "Don And The Goodtimes were stars of Where The Action Is, Dick Clark's answer to both The Monkees and Shindig!, which was built around Paul Revere and The Raiders, and co-starred The Hard Times (don't miss their Rev- Ola CD collection Blew Mind...fabulous!), Monkees crony Keith Allison and others...and our heroes, like The Raiders themselves mainstays of the Seattle/Northwest scene...Don (Galluci) himself had been the underage keyboardist on The Kingsmen's immortal 'Louie Louie'...too young to tour the hit, Don had come back with a new band a couple of years later, scoring a slew of regional and national hits on the legendary Jerden group of labels...and being picked out by old mates The Raiders for their big TV break...signing to Epic, the hits continued with this classic of Los Angeles psychedelic pop, produced and arranged by the amazing Jack Nitszche, architect of Spector's Wall Of Sound and the X Factor on the Rolling Stones first run of Andrew Loog Oldham produced hits...a masterpiece of Softpop/Sunshine Pop/Superpop, with their garage roots showing all over the place, and Jack's magic touch bringing it all together. Fantastic and long-coveted Los Angeles psychedelic pop masterpiece. The first time ever on CD anywhere."

CHARLES WRIGHT & THE 103RD STREET RHYTHM BAND - You're So Beautiful (Water 169; USA) "This is first time on CD for this 1971 Warner Bros. soul classic. Steeped in call-and-response revivalism this amazing lost album brings the funk and showcases one of the great funk bands of the '60s and '70s. A Tribe Called Quest and Brand Nubian have plucked juicy lines from 'What Can You Bring Me,' with its chicken-scratch guitar licks and ebbing horn patterns. New detailed liner notes."

MAY, 2006 AT THE STONE IS A MEMORIAL TO DEREK BAILEY
Derek Bailey loved New York City. He loved playing here and he loved being here. It was his hope to come back to New York to both curate and play at The Stone for the month of May.
