SIX ASTOUNDING NEW DISCS FROM THE WONDERFUL FOLKS AT CLEAN FEED:

HERB ROBERTSON NY DOWNTOWN ALLSTARS With TIM BERNE/SYLVIE COURVOISIER/MARK DRESSER/TOM RAINEY - Elaboration (Clean Feed 42; Portugal) A new Herb Robertson release is always cause for celebration, at least in my household. There's always that anticipation to see what he's done this time. Ever since his first JMT releases in the mid-80s, (Transparency and X-Cerpts, both done with his early quartet of Tim Berne, Lindsay Horner and Joey Barron) Robertson has always delivered something different that discriminating listeners can sink their ears into. He released a superb album of Bud Powell compositions arranged for brass sextet and rhythm. His trio with bassist Dominic Duval and drummer Jay Rosen (a killer rhythm duo) put out a pair of records that specialized in free improvisation in its purest form yet could also essay a stunning rendition of that hoary old chestnut Deep Purple. Robertson has led large ensembles in free improv blowouts (Knudstock 2000) and he's shared duo space with drummers (Phil Haynes on Ritual) and fellow trumpet players (Paul Smoker on drummer Jay Rosen's Drums And Bugles).
In addition to being a creative leader, Robertson has also been the consummate sideman. When Paul Smoker needed a fellow trumpeter for his brass trio recording Brass Reality, Robertson got the call. When, back in 1992, Joe Fonda and Michael Jefry Stevens were forming their long lasting group (Fonda/ Stevens Group), they needed a trumpet player who could play as outside as the music went, yet still be mindful of the tradition from which their music sprung. Robertson was the prime candidate. According to bassist Fonda, Herbie was always the first choice. Which brings us to Elaboration. For this date, he's assembled a new ensemble, Herb Robertson's Downtown All-Stars, a group handpicked from the illustrious list of players he's performed with in the past.

PAAL NILSSEN-LOVE With EVAN PARKER/STEN SANDELL/INGEBRIGT HAKER FLATEN - Townorchestrahouse (Clean Feed 41; Portugal) Drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and bass player Ingebrigt Haker Flaten know how to rock, as we hear in Raoul Bjorkenheim's Scorch Trio record, Luggumt, with all its metal energy, where they interpret the White Stripes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and PJ Harvey; with Mats Gustafsson's The Thing; or kicking ass in partnership with the rock band Cato Salsa Experience, with Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love serving as the basis for their jamming. In addition to that, we can recognize from the way they understand the world of sound and in the voicings they use a strong influence of contemporary 'classical' music, and of more avant-garde, experimental practices. Some of the things we hear Nilssen-Love do in Townorchestrahouse could have been composed by Xenakis. But in fact these pieces have not even been composed: they are all improvised and they are his personal vision, cherished by the likes of Peter Brotzmann or Ken Vandermark.
Similarly, pianist Sten Sandell is in superb form in these recordings, always reminding us of his other explorations in music, using sampler and electronics, Tibetan throat singing, and the Indian harmonium, in addition to the piano, in contexts that vary from a kind of neo-progressive rock with folk colors to post-Henry Cowell New Music. His piano playing might have Cecil Taylor as a reference, but it is more universal, constantly traveling in and out of jazz. Evan Parker is the prototype of the kind of musician I'm talking about: he's one of the biggest names in freely improvised music, in a plurality of forms, from his more conventional trio with Barry Guy and Paul Lytton to the Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, and from his collaborations with the post-post-modernist project Spring Heel Jack to those with the dub of Jah Wobble. But he's also a complete jazz virtuoso of the tenor and soprano saxophones.
This is jazz played by a quartet of incredible musicians who do not play jazz only, and this is felt from beginning to end. The future of jazz courses through this record, with its fresh vocabulary and broadened frontiers. It is played by Europeans, not Americans, but that is the consequence of the globalization of culture in the first years of the 21st century: everyone in the planet is called to renew our common heritage, and the truth is that jazz belongs now to the public, international domain. Have a good listen, wherever you are.

MICHAEL BLAKE TRIO With BEN ALLISON/JEFF BALLARD - Right Before Your Very Ears (Clean Feed 44; Portugal)
CD $17.00

JEAN-MARC FOLTZ/BRUNO CHEVILLON - Cette Opacite (Clean Feed 45; Portugal) Jean-Marc Foltz ( bass and Bd clarinets), Bruno Chevillon (double bass) When, at Jazz Mulhouse 2004, in Alsace, at the end of August, at another of his memorable festivals, Bruno Chevillon gave me a CD-R with a recording of his duo with Jean Marc Folz at the Jazz D'Or festival in Strasbourg in 2003, where the pairing made its debut, under the directorship of Philippe Ochen, I immediately felt that this dialogue between such credible musicians was a taste of new things to come. After hearing the recording, with its surprising technical quality, preserving the whole truth of this musical event, I had no hesitation in programming them for Jazz em Agosto 2005 at the Gulbenkian Foundation, and I also raised the possibility of releasing the recording with the producer Pedro Costa, mentor of the respected Clean Feed label. With a reputation built up through word of mouth, the precious music of Foltz and Chevillon has finally stepped out into the daylight, on disc and in concert, in one of the best loved formations of contemporary jazz: interaction deux, only possible with exceptional musicians. Folz and Chevillon, who played together in the quintet of the pianist Stephen Oliva, are also prime challengers for supremacy in their respective instruments, clarinets and bass, woodwind and strings, a field where Europe, and France in particular, can boast the finest exponents. Cette Opacite, the title chosen for the disc, subtle in its meaning, will also reveal the deep and artless affinity between the two musicians, a great gift to be shared.

MI3 [PANDELIS KARAYORGIS/NATE McBRIDE/CURT NEWTON] - We Will Make A Home For You (Clean Feed 39; Portugal) In the winter of 2002 Nate McBride and I started a weekly jazz and improvised music series at the Abbey Lounge in Cambridge, Mass., which he named "mim" (for modern improvised music). Curt Newton, with whom we both had a longstanding musical relationship, joined us in forming the mi3 trio, the house band for that series. (The mim series ran weekly until that summer at the Abbey. In the fall of 2002, it relocated to the 'Artists At Large' gallery in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston, where Nate continued to run it until he left for Chicago in the summer of 2004.)
We chose to use the electric piano partly out of necessity, since the Abbey had no piano, and partly out of curiosity for the effect it would have on our music. We processed the Fender Rhodes sound using some pedals that Nate lent me; a vintage Mutron, a Wah pedal, and a distortion pedal. It was very exciting for me to work with the long sustain, volume and timbral variety the Rhodes could offer when combined with these pedals. This was an opportunity to explore something different, and the discoveries in sound and texture energized us all to try new musical ideas. In the following season we continued playing from time to time at the mim's new location, and we also did a two-month weekly run there as part of the 'mim residency' series, performing with this electric trio through the spring of 2004. Parts of this CD were recorded live both at the Abbey Lounge and at the 'Artists At Large' gallery. Nate contributed some of the more intriguing repertoire choices on this CD, especially the Hasaan and Dolphy selections, to which we added compositions by Thelonious Monk and some originals.

NEW ON STEVE FEIGENBAUM'S 'CUNEIFORM', THE GREAT PROGRESSIVE LABEL!!

CLAUDIA QUINTET [JOHN HOLLENBECK et al] - Semi-Formal (Cuneiform 217) The Claudia Quintet is proof positive that the pessimists were wrong: jazz is not dead, despite being embalmed by major labels and confined by some musicians to dead ends. In the works of this sensational NY-based, 'jazz and beyond' ensemble, jazz has broken through its rigid shell and been reborn in shimmering and beautifully alluring new form. It lives and breathes in music that melds influences from classical minimalism, new music composition, and progressive and post-rock with an astonishingly fresh jazz sensibility. Whatever one wants to call their music, it has very striking original, unique and attractive qualities. This is a slowly unfolding album; group leader/drummer/composer John Hollenbeck has specifically stated that this album is "...a 'listener's record' - a record that might not make perfect sense when individual tracks are listened to randomly on one's ipod shuffle or on a writer's deadline.... In the end, despite cultural pressure to create an instant "hit", "The Claudia Quintet creates a fresh, distinctive sound while it obliterates barriers between jazz, classical and progressive rock."-DownBeat.

NDIO [w/ HUGH HOPPER] - AirBack (Cuneiform 216) NDIO was formed from the ashes of the Holland-based Hugh Hopper Band. Some time after the Hopper Band disbanded, saxophonist Frank van der Kooij, a key member from the start, asked Hopper to join a project under his leadership. Frank also invited two other Hopper Band alumni to join: British trombonist Robert Jarvis, and drummer Pieter Bast. Three other Dutch musicians rounded out the ensemble: guitarist Niels Brouwer, keyboardist Paul Maassen. Van der Kooij named this new project NDIO; as he recalls: "The history of NDIO starts of course with the long cooperation between Hugh Hopper and myself in the Hugh Hopper Band, which did its first concert in spring 1985 in Breda, Holland; many concerts in Europe followed. In 2000 I wanted to create a new working formula in which I would have more possibilities of creating my own atmosphere so I invited a lot of old and new musicians to form several new groups. Of course one of these musicians was Hugh again!
CD $13

DJAM KARET - Recollection Harvest (Cuneiform 219) With Recollection Harvest, Djam Karet has again succeeded in making a powerful and beautiful album of progressive rock. Recollection Harvest is also a landmark in the band's restless sonic evolution. In the band's own words, "Never content to just sit on our ass, we worked diligently to explore a more melodic and orchestrated vision of high energy progressive rock. Deeply disturbing atmospheres and netherworlds await." Acoustic guitars, generous use of vintage analog synths and mellotrons, and the use of 2 bass players for compositional ideas, are paired along with familiar aspects of the Djam Karet sound: ripping dual lead guitars, a dynamic pounding rhythm section, and electronic treated field recordings and soundscapes. Recollection Harvest is the band's 16th studio recording, and is actually two albums combined on a single CD. The first half, "Recollection Harvest," is Djam Karet's most extensive foray into high energy melodic rock underpinned by vintage and modern keyboards.
"All the cliches ever used about instrumental prog rock at its best would be appropriate here: 'soaring,' 'anthemic,' 'powerful,' 'gorgeous,' 'cosmic,' and so on...that's good news for anyone who wants to revisit the glory days of the genre or find out why this type of music still has so many fans.... Their music has a sweeping, epic sound very much in the tradition ..."-Bill Tilland, All Music Guide.
CD $13

FORGAS BAND PHENOMENA - Soleil 12 (Cuneiform 218) The Forgas Band Phenomena is led by composer and drummer Patrick Forgas, who has been hailed as "the French answer to the Canterbury scene" since he first burst upon the scene in 1977 with his "Cocktail" album, which featured members of Magma and Zao. Due to bad luck and bad circumstances, he fell out of the music scene for a great number of years, re-emerging with the very wonderful Forgas Band Phenomena about a decade ago. For their third album, and their first for Cuneiform, Patrick leads an 8 piece instrumental ensemble (dual saxes, trumpet, violin, guitar, keyboards, bass and drums) through epic-length, complex and melodic compositions that mix ambitious progressive structures and inspired soloing. In addition to the many Canterbury comparisons, I also hear a lot in common with the band that Frank Zappa led with George Duke & Jean-Luc Ponty; great tunes and arrangements in a fusion style with excellent 'jazz' soloing. Interestingly, two of the pieces are greatly re-arranged vers "Flexing my authority, I strong armed a copy of Soleil 12 out of the Cuneiform head honcho. It is absolutely drop dead amazing. Canterbury fans will shit themselves when they hear this disc. I can't stop playing it. Amazing, Amazing, Amazing."-Ken Golden/The Laser's Edge.
"...thoroughly composed jazz-rock brimming with purpose at every twist and turn. The large number of instruments allowed for a great variety of expression, as they tended not to play all at once. Think Arti E Mestieri arranged for a jazz orchestra and you get a rough idea (of what this is about). I can't say enough about how good these guys are."-Sean McFee/Expose.
CD $13

MATS/MORGAN BAND [MATS OBERG/MORGAN AGREN] - Thanks For Flying With Us (Cuneiform 215; USA) [Japanese edition with bonus 2nd disc. This is the special edition made for Japan of the Mats/Morgan band's seventh album. In addition to the regular CD, there is a 2nd CDEP included that is about 22' long of material from Morgan's archive of live and studio work, all mixed together to flow as one long track.]
Mats Oberg (keyboards) and Morgan Agren (drums) first began playing together 25 years ago (!!) when Mats was 11 and Morgan was 15. Originally very influenced by Frank Zappa, they actually played with Zappa in 1988, but while some of the Zappa influence remains, they have long since found their own voices. In the mid 90's, they began releasing CDs on Morgan's UAE label, eventually forming a stable band, which has been amazing audiences in Europe and the USA since 2001, and which consists of Mats and Robert Elovsson-keyboards, Jimmy Agren-guitar, Tommy Thordsson-bass and Morgan-drums. All players with superb playing ability, the quintet plays as a well-honed, cohesive unit, with more developed compositions than in earlier works, showing the band arriving at its own voice in progressive jazz/rock, with a modern-sounding blend of complexity, composition, chops and beats. Thanks For Flying With Us is their seventh album, and their first release outside of Sweden
"They played unbelievable, just unbelievable."-Frank Zappa
"Remarkable technical expertise and playing skills"-Bill Bruford
"Absolutely unbelievable, they drove me right out of my mind, it was so good. Buy their albums."-Mike Keneally
CD $13

CIRCLE - Forest (No Quarter 10) "Formed in 1991, Circle is the most visible and prolific name in the Finnish rock underground. With Forest the band have touched on their most accessible sound yet with four lengthy, percussive heavy songs that navigate through dark Kraut-inspired rhythms, whispered vocals and hypnotic repetition."
CD $13

SECRET OYSTER - Vidunderlige Kaelling (Laser's Edge 1043) "Under exclusive world-wide license from Sony Denmark, The Laser's Edge is pleased to re-launch their long heralded reissue series with the first of six titles from the legendary Danish jazz-rock ensemble Secret Oyster. Considered a 'supergroup' by the Danish rock press, Secret Oyster originally formed in 1973. Notable members include Karsten Vogel (sax) and Jess Staehr (bass) from Burnin' Red Ivanhoe, Kenneth Knudsen (keyboards) and Ole Streenberg (drums) from Coronarias Dans, and guitarist Claus Bohling of Hurdy Gurdy. In 1975 Secret Oyster was commissioned by noted Danish choreographer Flemming Flindt to create the music for Vidunderlige Kaelling, the provocative ballet based on the erotic poetry of Jens August Schade. With contributions from ECM recording artist Palle Mikkelborg and Kasper Winding, the recording sessions resulted in their 3rd album, also released the following year in the USA as Astarte. Thirty years later it is considered a jazz rock classic that will appeal to fans of Soft Machine, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Return To Forever. This marks the first time that the Secret Oyster catalog has appeared in the compact disc format. With the co-operation of the band, Vidunderlige Kaelling features three previously unreleased bonus tracks and new liner notes from Karsten Vogel."

JIM HALL/ENRICO PIERANUNZI - Duologues (CAM 5009; USA)

CHRISTIAN MARCLAY/YASUNAO TONE/CHRISTIAN WOLFF - Event (Asphodel 2032; USA) Music performed for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company on January 29, 1998, at the Flynn Theatre for the Performing Arts in Burlington, Vermont. "Originally recorded in early 1998 when it was improvised for a performance of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Event is a three way tug of war of formats. Marclay using his trademarked turntables and records, Tone with prepared CDs and CD players and Christian Wolff utilizing a cassette recorder/player (plus bass, various percussion and a melodica). The result is an ocean of screams, bleets, chirps, howls and drones with each player stepping into the spotlight periodically and seamlessly. Just as tides ebb and flow, so does the 'trichotomy' of these three wise men."
CD $14

MATTHEW HERBERT - Plat Du Jour (Accidental 19) In the days before sampling, avant-garde musicians were always hitting unlikely objects to create sound or splicing bits of tape together. But modern digital technology has made it relatively easy to make music out of literally anything, like Matmos sampling plastic surgery in 2001. For Plat du Jour, Matthew Herbert turned to foods, their production processes and cooking methods, most obviously on the cheeping, whisk-powered 'The Truncated Life of a Modern Industrialized Chicken'. Elsewhere, there are tracks made from recordings of salmon milling around, cans of Coke fizzing and beet sugars crystallizing. Pitched somewhere between conceptual art and political statement, this six track EP also features 'Brief Field Recordings Of London Sewers', ' These Branded Waters', 'Early Demo Of 365 People Eating An Apple In Spain And England', 'Hidden Sugars' and the wicked Dani Siciliano led 'Celebrity'.

NEW ON JAPAN'S 'PSF' [PSYCHEDELIC SPEED FREAKS] LABEL:

KAORU ABE - Winter 1972 (PSF 158; Japan) Kaoru Abe: alto saxophone. "The long-awaited official reissue of the rarest of all recordings by mercurial, live fast and die young alto hero Kaoru Abe. Originally released sometime in 1973 or 1974 on the Sound Works label out of Osaka, this was a bootleg LP of Abe in full-flowing solo action. The records came in a plain white sleeve, the label makes no mention of Abe's name, and they came with a very high price tag for the time. Needless to say, this has since become a laughably rare record, unseen by even the most dedicated of Abe collectors. Rarity aside, this is an utterly thrilling missive from Abe's most uncompromising and satisfying period. As yet untrammelled by self-abuse, his utterly distinctive voice on alto rings swift, clear and true, scattering diamond shards of light in its wake. Stunningly concentrated and sure-footed - it needs to be heard." - Alan Cummings.
CD $20

SANHEDOLIN [HAINO KEIJI & THE RUINS] - Manjoicchi wa muko (PSF 162; Japan) "Sanhedolin are a ludicrously amped-up and heavy new power trio, featuring Keiji Haino, Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins) and Mitsuru Nasuno (Ruins). Haino brings aggressive anguish and all-consuming black fire, Yoshida and Nasuno supply a sack-full of convulsive time-shifting and complex kinetic acceleration. Haino and Yoshida have been working together on and off for the past three or four years in a number of duo and trio contexts, including a tour of China and Taiwan. They have built up the kind of instinctual response and rapport that only comes with extended playing. A previous trio formation including Hisashi Sasaki (ex Ruins) seems to have bitten the dust, and in its place we have the newly named Sanhedolin. Speed-deranged progressive metal of spectacular and ridiculous heights." - Alan Cummings.
CD $20

HAINO KEIJI - Global Ancient Atmosphere (PSF 8021; Japan) Keiji Haino (drums). "Rhythm, duration and silence lie at the foundation of all of Haino's music. After a clutch of documents of his hair-raising solo performances for both acoustic and electric percussion, this latest album presents Haino's first recorded outing behind a regular drumkit. Haino has long desired to release a solo drum album, and he has been playing a regular kit occasionally live for several decades now. Global Ancient Atmosphere (the alternative Japanese title means 'These signs, a sealed beginning') contains nine tracks that showcase an austere yet thrilling investigation of attack and decay on nothing less than the molecular level. As inimitable, and as life-affirming as ever." - Alan Cummings.
CD $20

MUNEHIRO NARITA - Narita (PSF 161; Japan) "First solo album by High Rise and Kyoaku no Intention six-string speed meister Munehiro Narita. Featuring a guest appearance by Takashi Ueno of Mahel Shalal Hash Baz, Tenniscoats, and a couple of dozen Majikick-related units fame. With High Rise currently on extended vacation, Narita has been burning up stages across Tokyo in his aggressive, free-jazz inflected improv rock unit Kyoaku no Intentions, and more recently in naked solo style. The time is definitely right, after over twenty years in Tokyo's premier lysergic garage psych outfits, for Narita to unleash a solo album. Serious students of Narita's guitar style will have noticed that for all its surface rock grime and ton-up speed thrills, it has always been a structurally complex thing drawing upon free jazz and free improv methodologies as much as greaser grunt. Even so, for those expecting a conflagration of demon-speed riffs and slash 'n' burn avant-garde dynamics, Narita will come as something of a surprise. He has deconstructed the most thrilling elements of rock guitar's pyrotechnics - wah-wahed smears, slowed down slides, sensual string bends - and retooled them into service of a far more subtle improvised psychedelia. Tonally it sounds like nothing else, rocked out and avanted up, meditative and impassioned cool all at once, Derrida with a Marshall stack." - Alan Cummings.
CD $20

PSF & ALCHEMY [V.A.] - 20th Anniversary Live (PSF 160; Japan) "In 2004, Tokyo's PSF and Osaka's Alchemy labels, twin pillars of the Japanese noise, punk, psychedelic, whatever underground celebrated two decades of against-all-odds paradigm deformation, world domination, and unrepentant synapse mangling. To commemorate the occasion, two joint concerts were held at The Doors and Super Deluxe in Tokyo, bringing together luminaries from both labels in a celebration of freedom spirit and independent thinking. Some of the most exciting music from these concerts arose out of audacious and inspired one-off collaborations. Thus, free guitarist Kazuo Imai joins pro-wrestling noisicians Incapacitants in the volume tag-team to end them all; Kan Mikami and Jojo Hiroshige get together to compare buzz-cuts and one-man against the universe philosophical approaches; and Junko (Hijokaidan) researches upper register oxygen levels with alto terrorist Masayoshi Urabe; and trembling late night atmospherics are deep-mined to sensual and sensitive effect by Go Hirano and Maher & Majikick stalwart Takashi Ueno. The multi-faceted beauty and creative power of the Japanese underground."
CD $20

KAZUKI TOMOKAWA - Itsuka Tooku O Miteita (PSF 8019; Japan) "Compilation of new and previously released tracks from Kazuki Tomokawa, Japan's god of emotionally transcendent song. Tomokawa's convulsive and passionate songs have recently graced films by two of Japan's most notorious directors, legendary underground director Koji Wakamatsu (whose career dates back to the early sixties) and Takashi Miike, the current enfant terrible of weird and ultra-violent genre flicks. Tomokawa's appearance playing himself in Miike's time-travelling samurai vengeance movie IZO in particular has stunned festival audiences - the violent, cathartic and irrational beauty of his songs chimes perfectly with the film's mood. Twelve tracks in total, including 'Pistol' the amazing title-track from IZO, previously only available as part of the PSF 13 CD boxset (PSFD-134 / 146). Also includes three entirely new tracks, and three radical re-recordings." - Alan Cummings.

SHELLEY HIRSCH & KAZUHISA UCHIHASHI - Duets (Innocent Records 008; Japan) Japanese electric guitar daredevil for Altered States and Phantasmagoria, Kazu was just in town for a few gigs and showed what a wonderful and completely focused improviser he really is. His downtown all-star set with Shelley Hirsch, Christian Marclay, Elliott Sharp, Ned Rothenberg and Bobby Previte on electronic drums at Tonic, was amazing and did not sound improvised, as he helps push those other downtown giants into a highly connected tapestry. Kazu also played an excellent solo set here at DMG, which sounded quite Frith-like in spots and was joined by Shelley Hirsch for a charming (unamplified) encore. Kazu's last set was with Kono (trombone), Nakatani (great percussionist) and Peter Kowald, who tragically passed away later that same night.
Vocalist extraordinaire, Shelley Hirsch, has been an integral part of the downtown scene for more than two decades, is criminally under-recorded and is one of the most charming, engaging, often hilarious and unique vocalists I have ever known. Her second Tzadik cd will be released next month, so with this fabulous live duo offering out this month, it is indeed a joyous occasion for all of us Shelley fans. Her duet with Miya Masaoka last night (10/1/02) at the Peter Kowald Memorial, was wonderful. 'Duets' was recorded at Big Apple in Kobe, Japan, where Kazu lives and begins delicately with Shelley and Kazu quietly performing a quaint ballad. Both Shelley and Kazu have an immense bag of tricks and throw ideas back and forth constantly. As soon as Kazu begins a melodic, pop-like theme, Shelley follows quickly with stream-of-consciousness singing - odd song quotes, gibberish words and sounds, sometimes cute, sometimes silly but always intriguing. When Kazu starts to play quirky jazz-like lines, Shelley begins a song/dialogue about shadows following in a variety of (wacky jazz) characters' voices. When Kazu begins manipulating his guitar with Frith-like objects and electronic devices, Shelley also provides a wealth of bizarre vocal sounds that work just right together. Shelley admits at one point, that "it doesn't matter if you're a bit out of tune, if it comes from your heart". She also uses a sampler to layer some of her vocals as a hypnotic back-up chorus, to her lead vocals. Part of Shelley's charm, is her ability to weave certain words or descriptions of her immediate environment into her ongoing flow, so the audience becomes a part of what is going on in front and around them. Kazu's talent is that he consistently comes up with highly musical lines and ideas, which sound like songs or parts of songs, all of which flow perfectly into a stream of the never-ending tide of fascinating events or stories. Shelley tells the tale of a man from Kobe who saved hundreds of Jews during WWII, exclaiming that "he could be one of your grandfathers" to the audience there. This wondrous duo is indeed an eloquent treasure and joyride of coolness. - BLG

KAZUHISA UCHIHASHI - Flect: Solo Electronic Guitar [#4] (innocent records 009; Japan) Kazu is one of Japan's finest electric guitarists, has played in the legendary Altered States and Phantasmagoria, as well as working with downtowners Shelley Hirsch, Ned Rothenberg and Samm Bennett. He came to town last year, played a solo/duo set at DMG and did a wonderful downtown all-star improv set at Tonic. He also sent us a dozen of his previous releases - solos, duos & trios plus a few of the Alter States titles. We still have a few of these left and they will be listed below. 'Flect' is Kazu's fourth solo el. guitar release and it was recorded at Bridge and Big Apple in May of this year. Here Kazu is playing a Godin electric guitar with an Electro-Harmonics delay, Digitech whammy pedal and bass loop station. He calls this 'solo electronic guitar' due to the devices he employs and much of this does sound rather electronic, often it is hard to tell that he is actually playing a guitar. He does come up with a fascinating array of sonic soundscapes which are lusciously recorded and float over the silence without getting too busy. I like the way he loops certain strange patterns and then will improvise an appropriate solo on top. Each piece paints a different often pensive mood and due to the spaciousness, everything has time to breathe and slowly evolve. The devices he uses provide an interesting variety of textures which are never too harsh, giving this entire release an endearing, somber aura. Gently rich and somewhat beautiful in it's own mildly alien way. - BLG

TERRY RILEY - Rainbow In Curved Air/Poppy Nogood (Columbia 7315; USA) After several graph compositions and early pattern pieces with jazz ensembles in the late '50s and early '60s (see "Concert for Two Pianists and Tape Recorders" and "Ear Piece" in La Monte Young's book -An Anthology), Riley invented a whole new music which has since gone under many names (minimal music -- a category often applied to sustained pieces as well -- pattern music, phase music, etc.) which is set forth in its purest form in the famous "In C" (1964) (for saxophone and ensemble, CBS MK 7178). "Rainbow in Curved Air" demonstrates the straightforward pattern technique but also has Riley improvising with the patterns, making gorgeous timbre changes on the synthesizers and organs, and presenting contrasting sections that has become the basic structuring of his works ("Candenza on the Night Plain" and other pieces). Scored for large orchestra with extra percussion and electronics, some of this work's seven movements are: "Star Night," "Blue Lotus," "The Earth Below," and "Island of the Rhumba King." ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny, AMG

KONONO NO. 1/THE DEAD C - Split Series #18 [12" ep] (Fat 12050; UK) "Hailing from Kinishasa in The Democratic Republic of The Congo, Konono No.1 marks FatCat's first release of an artist from the African continent. The Congolese refer to this style as 'tradi-modern', meaning electrified traditional music. Konono No.1 was founded over 25 years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembe (a traditional instrument sometimes called 'sanza' or 'thumb piano', consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band's line-up includes three electric likembes (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. The rhythm section uses both traditional and makeshift percussion (pans, pots, car parts), 3 singers, 3 dancers and a sound system. Whilst their repertoire draws largely on Bazombo trance music, the incorporation of originally-unwanted distortions arising through their sound system has led to them developing a unique style which has accidentally connected them with the aesthetics of the most experimental forms of rock and electronic music, as much through their sounds as through their sheer volume and merciless grooves. Formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1987 by guitarists Michael Morley and Bruce Russell, and drummer Robbie Yeats, The Dead C have released nearly 20 albums. Their side of this Split 12" opens with five locked-groove slices of molten, lava-fold noise. Whilst the later 2 tracks witness the trio in live meltdown, the first full track sees a rare-ish return to the band's earlier methods which see-sawed around a tension between the solidity of the song and the disintegrative logic of free improvisation."

EARTH/KK NULL - Tour Split (Important 060) "'Dexamyl,' by Earth and mastered by James Plotkin, is an epic 20-minute classic Earth slow-jam stomp for drums and guitar. Together Carlson and Davies work themselves into a slow and heavy groove so deep and so wide that only Earth can fill it. Conversely, KK Null's two 'Andromeda' tracks, the second which has until now been unreleased and both stretching to the 20-minute mark, both have more in common with the minimalist micro-sound movement than Null's prior work for Important. This split release is packaged in a deluxe matte laminate jacket designed by Sunn O)))'s Stephen O'Malley."

ALBERT AYLER - New Grass (Impulse! 426902; USA) Possibly the most notorious Albert Ayler release and universally misunderstood (i.e., hated) by fans and critics alike. When New Grass was released in 1968 it received a hostile outcry of sellout. Listening to New Grass in hindsight it must be taken into account that even though commercial elements are apparent -- a soul horn section, backup singers, boogaloo drumming from Bernard Purdie, and electric rock bass -- Ayler's vocals and tenor playing could hardly gain commercial radio exposure at any time. It's likely Impulse prodded Ayler to move into a more pronounced blues-oriented sound and he went willingly. Ayler wasn't a stranger to R&B or gutbucket blues; he had started his career playing saxophone with Chicago bluesman Little Walter in the '50s. Ayler's screeching tone remains intact on New Grass but it's mixed with definite R&B riffs like the obvious honkin' nod to "Slippin and Sliddin" on "New Generation." Ayler's attempt to explain himself on the opening track "Message From Albert Ayler" reveals his impending dread over controversy concerning the material. It is a problem many artists face at some point in their careers when trying to move in a different direction, no matter what the reason; they may end up losing a majority of their audience by taking a foreign approach. The fact that this material remains out of print in the United States speaks volumes for the lasting commercial contempt still attributed to this album, not only by fans and critics but the record company. Proving that New Grass wasn't commercial when it was first released and remains less so decades later. ~ Al Campbell, AMG

2 CD set for $25

BOB DYLAN - No Direction Home - The Complete Documentary [2 DVD set] (Paramount; USA) "Bob Dylan is a private man who is notoriously camera shy. The TV interview he gave around the publication of his autobiography, Chronicles, last year was his first in two decades, so there was some surprise when Martin Scorsese announced he was making the definitive TV biopic with the man's full co-operation. It seems that in his sixties, Dylan - who has spent so much of his career laying false trails and telling downright lies about himself - has decided it's time to set the record straight and get his version of his life and times on the record, both in print and on film. And Scorsese, who directed The Last Waltz, the 1977 film about Dylan's former backing group, the Band, was the obvious man to do it.
Almost four hours long, No Direction Home, directed by Martin Scorcese, deals only with the early part of Dylan's career, ending in 1966 and the tumultuous world tour on which he was booed by folk purists unable to accept his new-found rock'n'roll ways. Much longer than the edited version that airs on PBS, it is a riveting piece of film-making that draws on wonderful contemporary footage, much of it previously unseen, as well as revelatory new interviews. Scorsese and his team also turned up a treasure trove of unreleased music, which constitutes the latest volume in the 'official bootleg series' Dylan launched in 1991 to combat the pirates who have conferred on him the dubious honour of being the most bootlegged artist in history." - Observer UK

THOUGHTS AND WORDS - Thoughts and Words (Radioactive 086; EEC) "In mid-'68, five years and three singles into their career as Pandamonium, Bob Ponton and Martin Curtis were fed up. Their history, covered comprehensively in No Presents For Me (RRCD106) saw them at the epicentre of London's psychedelic folk scene and hanging out with the likes of Davy Graham and Sandy Denny and the other Fairport members. Thoughts and Words is a largely upbeat collection of melodic, pensive songs, so unlike the angry and disillusioned vibe that had prevailed in their late '60s output. The duo decided to name the album after a track on the Byrd's Younger Than Yesterday, but were surprised to learn that they had been given the name too! This is the 3rd Pandamonium release on Radioactive, and the 2nd to be mastered directly from the original 2-track 1/4"IPS analogue tapes."
CD $16

JOSEPH - Stoned Aged Man (Radioactive 134; EEC) "This is a rare album indeed and much sought after, originally released on the Scepter label (SPS 574) in 1970 and recorded in Memphis at the legendary American Sound Studios. The 'Joseph' was in fact Joseph Long or Joseph Longeria, discovered by the album's producer and A & R man Steve Tyrell playing in Houston in a battle of the blues competition. This is the only known foray into recording that Longeria made and he was a superb guitar player to boot. Stoned Age Man contains some of weirdest lyrics ever written. Check out 'I Ain't Fattenin' No More Frogs for Snakes' and the eastern 'Cold Biscuits and Fish Heads.' This is an obscure classic that lovers of blues rock should not hesitate to have in their collection... the voice you may ask... well think Roky Erickson, Jim Dandy and Beefheart....you can't really go wrong can you????"
CD $16

THE MERRY-GO-ROUND - Listen Listen: The Definitive Collection (Cherry Red 110; UK) "Of all the cult west coast 1960s groups, perhaps the most talked about and referenced over the last few years have been The Merry Go Round, though bizarrely, the last reissue of their work was a Rhino vinyl best-of in 1984. Boy genius Emitt Rhodes left the drum seat in The Palace Guard to front his own band recruited from the disbanding Gene Clark Group among others. Signing to A&M they quickly scored two hits 'Live' and 'You're A Very Lovely Woman,' and a superb album, getting Emitt covers by such as Fairport Convention, before disbanding as Emitt became more and more interested in recording in his home studio than touring. They had, however, cut a large quantity of material, and when Emitt briefly became a solo star with his home recorded albums on Dunhill, some of it was released by A&M. Here for the first time ever, is a comprehensive anthology of the work of this most enigmatic of L.A. pop groups - one whose links to Gene Clark, The Grass Roots, Paul McCartney, Curt Boettcher and Herb Alpert (on whose 1967 TV special they featured) emerge in the detailed notes."
CD $16

TREES - Garden of Jane Delawney (Columbia 06064; UK) Columbia Rewind reissue from the 90s of the first Trees album, originally issued in 1970. Formed in 1969, folk/rock quintet Trees used a similar blueprint to that pioneered by Fairport Convention, whose influence was unsurprisingly evident in the two Trees albums made for CBS and both released in 1970, The Garden of Jane Delawney, and On The Shore. The most obvious similarity to Fairport was that both groups had a female vocalist, Sandy Denny of Fairport and Celia Humphris. The other members of Trees on the two albums were Bias (short for Tobias) Boshell (bass guitar on the first album and also keyboard player on the second), lead guitarist Barry Clarke, David Costa (12 string and acoustic guitars, dulcimer, mandolin, etc.) and Unwin Brown (drums).
CD $16

TREES - On The Shore (Columbia 84435; UK) Columbia Rewind reissue from the 90s of the 2nd Trees album, also originally issued in 1970. Midline price. "The Trees' second album is so similar to the debut that it's difficult to recommend one above the other. It's more assertive, harder-rocking, and fuller-sounding than the debut, but the principal flaws of overlong songs and patchy original material remain. The taut and dramatic original 'Murdoch' is the highlight, rivaling the first album's 'The Garden of Jane Delawney' as their best track." - Richie Unterberger/AMG.
