THREE BIG DISCS FROM OUR BUBBIES AT TZADIK:
MASADA [JOHN ZORN'S] - Sanhedrin [2 CD set & book] (Tzadik 7346) Twenty-nine sterling studio performances never available before from what many consider to be one of the most important instrumental ensembles of the past quarter century. Over two and a half hours of rare alternates, many even more exciting than the original releases, were handpicked by Zorn from the legendary sessions of 1994-1997 and are accompanied by a lush booklet filled with photos, scores, written tributes and remembrances. This pioneering band, that spearheaded Radical Jewish Culture and helped bring Jewish music into the 21st Century, continues to inspire Jews and music lovers the world over with an original musical language of honesty, imagination and originality drawing on many pasts and looks toward a myriad of futures. This is where it all began! TZADIK ARCHIVAL SERIES
2 CD set with Book for $30
OKKYUNG LEE - Nihm (Tzadik 7715) Born in Taejon, Korea, Okkyung Lee moved to Boston in 1996, where she received degrees in film scoring and improvisation. A ubiquitous figure in the downtown scene since 2000, her cello playing is passionate and uncompromising. For her debut CD she has created a sensitive suite drawing inspiration from her Korean roots, the world of mystery and the world of love. Featuring many of the musicians she has grown close to in the past several years, Nihm is a brilliantly conceived collection of music blending composition and improvisation in surprising new ways. TZADIK ORACLES SERIES
"For this superb release, Okkyung has chosen a strong cast of musicians to work with: Tim Barnes & John Hollenbeck on percussion, Shelley Burgon on harp, Sylvie Courvoisier on piano, Trevor Dunn on bass, Ikue Mori on electronics and Doug Weiselman on clarinets. The opening track, "On a Windy Day" is a mesmerizing piece for exotic percussion and samples from Hollenbeck and Ms. Mori. "That Undeniable Empty Feeling" is a fine post-klez piece that looks further east and features the lovely clarinet work of Doug Weiselman. On each of the four pieces that Doug plays on, his clarinet is used lusciously. Acoustic harpist Shelley Burgon is a newer part of the downtown network and since moving here she has collaborated with Trevor Dunn, John Zorn and has a trio with Annie Gosfield and Okkyung. Shelley's delicate, yet mysterious harp is featured on "Story of You and Me", where she works exquisitely with Okkyung's enchanting cello. Okkyung's forte is taking things further out as a daredevil improviser. Hence, on "Anything You Say..", she does a marvelous job of pushing the envelope with the help of Sylvie's inside-the-piano work, Shelley's harp and Tim's percussion. Miss Lee has picked two perfect percussionists for the job, both Barnes and Hollenbeck play ever so subtly and dreamily on each piece that they're on. Each piece creates a different, trance-like mood, perfect for those magical late night moments, when we're in between states of sleep and wakefulness. " - BLG

ANDY STATMAN - Avodas Halevi (Tzadik 8101) One of the originators of the Klezmer Revival, Andy Statman is one of the most important figures in modern Jewish Music. A talented instrumentalist, composer and bandleader, his recent music looks out from the traditional towards a more modern Jewish sound. Filled with lyricism and spirituality, these powerful recordings from his private archives show him at a creative peak. Along with the original recordings of his popular jazz tinged quartet are two radical duets with drummer Bob Meyer reminiscent of the Interstellar Space John Coltrane/Rashied Ali duets of 1967. It is an honor for Tzadik to welcome this musical Grandmaster into the catalog of Radical Jewish Culture with his newest and most adventurous project to date. TZADIK RADICAL JEWISH CULTURE SERIES

FIVE FANTASTIC DISCS FROM OUR FAVORITE PROGRESSIVE LABEL - CUNEIFORM:
JOHN SURMAN with JOHN TAYLOR/JOHN MARSHALL/BRIAN ODGERS - Way Back When (Cuneiform 200) Superb unreleased studio date from 1969 featuring John Surman on soprano & baritone saxes, John Taylor on electric piano, Brian Odgers on bass guitar and John Marshall on drums plus guest alto saxist Mike Osborne. This is a truly stupendous archival find, with broad appeal to both jazz and early fusion fans. Recorded on October 7th, this is a mix between the vibrancy of late 60's uk jazz and spacey early electric jazz/rock ala "In A Silent Way"; listening to this album, you can hear that the fusion explosion is on the cusp of happening. Soprano/baritone saxophonist John Surman is one of the UK's best known jazzmen, having released 8 albums under his own name between 1968 - 1974 for mainstream labels such as Deram and Island. He was a member of John McLaughlin's final UK-based group, recording John's famous first solo album & masterwork, 'Extrapolation' with him in 1969, six months before recording 'Way Back When'. Since the late 1970's, he has mostly recorded for the ECM label, recording dozens of albums as either the leader or as a sideman. "In mid-October, 1969, I left the UK to meet up with bassist Barre Phillips and drummer Stu Martin to begin working with them as "The Trio". Before I left however, a few close friends and I held a sort of 'farewell' session in Tangerine Studios in London. On hand were drummer John Marshall, electric pianist John Taylor and Brian Odgers on bass guitar - later Mike Osborne appeared with his alto and joined us. Shortly after I left England, the studios closed down and, although a few test pressings were made, the original tapes got lost in the general confusion. Much to my surprise the masters had survived and were uncovered in 2003...what you are hearing accurately reflects the sound of the sixties...it offers genuine insight into some of the musical directions that were being explored at the end of that swinging decade in the UK." - John Surman

GRAHAM COLLIER with HARRY BECKETT/MIKE GIBBS/KENNY WHEELER/JOHN SURMAN/KARL JENKINS/JOHN MARSHALL - Workpoints /Two Concerts from a Golden Age of British Jazz [2 CD Set] (Cuneiform 213/214) Called "A pioneer...a true British jazz original." by The Times, "An inventive and underrated jazz figure" by Jazziz and "Britain's most original jazz talent." by The Financial Times, Graham Collier is one of the best known British jazz composers, and over a 40 year career, his list of compositions and comissions has grown to encompass ensembles around the world. He was born in Tynemouth, England in 1937. He won a Downbeat scholarship to Berklee School of Music, Boston, studying with Herb Pomeroy and becoming its first British graduate in 1963. Returning to Britain, he formed the first of many line-ups known as Graham Collier Music, which over the years has featured a vast majority of all British jazz musicians of note. He was also the first recipient of a grant from the Art's Council of Great Britain for jazz composition; basically his work was so impressive that it forced the dowdy music establishment to take jazz seriously for the first time, which led to other deserving! UK musicians also having a chance to be supported for their art in the jazz world! Workpoints consists of two previously unreleased concerts from 'a golden age of British jazz': one from 1968 and one from 1975. The music is composed with lots of room for contributions from the individual players, and in that regard, might be comparable to the work of one of Graham's heroes, Charles Mingus. The album features a huge number of well known jazz musicians, such as: Harry Beckett, Mike Gibbs, Karl Jenkins, Frank Ricotti, Henry Lowther, John Marshall, John Surman, Art Themen, Kenny Wheeler and others. Included in the booklet are archival photos, notes and comments from Graham.

MIRIODOR - Parade/Live at NEARFest 2002 [2 CD set] (Cuneiform 208/209) There are few things as exciting to me personally as receiving a new release from this band, who I regard as one of the greatest of the greats. Miriodor have been making adventurous, memorable and truly entertaining instrumental rock music for 25 years. Currently they use a six piece lineup of guitars, keyboards, violin, saxophones, bass and drums. As Goldmine said, "Occupying a realm somewhat between the chamber rock of Univers Zero and the spry fusion of vintage Jean-Luc Ponty, with hints of Van Der Graaf Generator and Soft Machine along the way, Miriodor mostly just sounds like Miriodor...unique and forward looking." Featuring some wonderful guest performances on bassoon and also guest spots by accordionist/keyboardist Lars Hollmer, who also contributes compositionally, Parade is the band's sixth album and is their most impressive and inspired album yet! In addition to their new studio work, this album includes a second disc which features the band's complete, now legenda! ry performance at NEARFest 2002, which was seen by a sold-out audience of 1,850 and which caused Sea Of Tranquility to comment, "Miriodor proved that complex music can still have melody and finesse. Miriodor was without a doubt one of the highlights of the festival..."

PRESENT - A Great Inhumane Adventure (Cuneiform 207) In 1998, when Cuneiform released Present's fifth album, Certitudes, the band came to the USA for the very first time and undertook a huge, full US tour, logging in 10,000 miles and 5 weeks of concerts. Professionally recorded on 24 track on the final date of the tour, after 35 days of touring, the band were a tight, hard-rocking, road-tested machine and this is a very well recorded, stunning, loud and hot performance. Roger & Reggie Trigaux-guitars and vocals, Pierre Chevalier-piano, Jean-Pierre Mendez-bass and Dave Kerman-drums. "No matter how great their record is, little could have prepared us for experiencing Belgium's Present live. They churned out mind-numbingly complex and shifting songs that always seemed to be driving towards some sort of awesome denouement. If they ever come around again, see them even if you have to kill to do it." - Atlanta Press. Present will again be touring the US this summer and I am working getting them a gig in NY. Do not miss them!

RADIO MASSACRE INTERNATIONAL - Emissaries [2 CD set] (Cuneiform 211/212) Radio Massacre International is a British trio of Steve Dinsdale (keyboards, electronics), Duncan Goddard (keyboards, electronics) and Gary Houghton (guitar, keyboards). These three musicians have worked together in various configurations since they were 16 year old students in the 70's and formed R.M.I. in 1993. Appealing to fans of classic era work by Ashra/Manuel Gottsching, Heldon, Pink Floyd, Popol Vuh, Steve Roach, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, Radio Massacre International are considered one of the greats of the current spacemusic/ electronic music scene. There are many times during this album where you will think you are listening to a long-lost Klaus Schulze album with his old friend Manuel Gottsching helping out on guitar! 'Emissaries' is intended to introduce the band to the music world at large outside of the electronic music cognoscenti. This deluxe 2 CD set, which sells for the price of a single CD, features a new studio album, a live album recorded at radio ! station WXPN in Philadelphia during their 2004 USA performances and a stunning cover by cartoonist Matt Howarth. Additionally, the studio album is a CD+ release which provides the buyer with a beautiful electronic comic (in .pdf format), which is viewable on any computer! "If you like Berlin school 1970's electronics...this is a feast of scorching sequencers and synthesizers, laced with searing guitars over lots of cool outer space drifting."-Expose.

BURNT SUGAR - If you can't dazzle them with your brillance, then baffle them with your blisluth [2 CD-R set] (Trugroid) Another live masterwork from our favorite local Arkestra and taken from four historic gigs in Bordeaux & San Sebastion (both on their European tour) and at Tonic & at The Vision Festival, all during Spring & Summer, 2004. Conducted by Greg Tate and featuring a stellar cast with Rene Akan & Tazayarah on guitars; Julia Kent & Okkyung Lee on cellos; Mazz Swift on violin; Jason DiMatteo (acoustic), Jared Nickerson (Electric) & Shazad Ismaily (+ banjo) on basses; Matana Roberts on alto sax; Petre Radu-Scafaru on tenor sax & Satch Hoyt on flute; Bruce Mack on synth; Vijay Iyer on piano & synth; Chris Eddleton, Trevor Holder & Qasim Naqvi on drums plus the voices of Jeremiah, Lisala, Justice Dilla-X & MC Omega Moon.
Burnt Sugar continue to evolve, with each performance different, but an extension of the previous one(s). Disc 1 starts with a rendition of Dizzy's "Night in Tunisia", first some fine solo sax, then adding an instrument or one section at a time and building from there. Soon layers of percussion, other saxes & basses get into the groove. Add some sly. sexy female jazz vocals later as the theme reappears. The swirling layers of lines move together tightly, yet they feel laid back at the same time. Greg has learned a great deal from his mentor Butch Morris, who conducted a previous Burnt Sugar disc called 'The Rites'. Tate pulls riffs and lines from this large ensemble, dreamy groove-scapes swell as one or two players take their time to play solos, just a few notes at at time, like a story unfolding. Most of the time this music is not about soloing as much as it is layering the sections, strings, reeds, percussion and creating an intriguing landscape of event. Both of these fabulous CDs are nearly 80 minutes each and although this is quite a long epic, it remains a long, magical journey to the stars and beyond. - BLG
2 CD-R set for $20
MEV/AMM - Apogee [2 CD set] (Matchless 61/UK) Disc 1 contains a joint recording of the six musicians -- Alvin Curran, Eddie PrØvost, Keith Rowe, Frederic Rzewski, Richard Teitelbaum and John Tilbury. It was recorded April 30th 2004. Disc 2 contains separate performances that MEV and AMM gave at the 'Freedom of the City' festival, London on May 1st 2004. "After the generally low dynamic levels and relatively slow pace of the AMM trio set on 1 May, the MEV trio opened with the blast of Alvin Curran playing the sho far, a trumpet made from a ram's horn, a 'defiantly primitive', prototypical music, fit to leave the walls of the Conway Hall, like some new Jericho, pitched down fiat. If I spoke earlier of the way in which AMM might deal, in Reeve and Kerridge's phrase, with the internal, microscopically-enlarged body surface which becomes a landscape -- and the same is true of some of Teitelbaum and Curran's quieter use of radically pitch-shifted and extended samples -- particularly that ululating operatic-theatrical voice, coming to sound almost like something from AMM's label-mates FURl -- then this is the extrovert mode, which refuses any easy accommodations. Which division is inherent; as Bourdieu explains, the culture which unifies via the medium of communication is also the culture which separates via the culture of distinction, and which legitimates distinctions. It may be, as Adorno remarks, that a work of art is great insofar as it registers a failed attempt to reconcile such objective antinomies; failure then being in the highest sense the measure of success."
2 CD set for $35
LOUIS SCLAVIS & JEAN-MARC MONTERA - Roman (FMP 127Germany) Featuring Louis Sclavis on soprano sax, clarinet & bass clarinet and Jean-Marc Montera on guitar, table-top guitar & electronics. Although both of these fine musicians are French and of the same generation, they've had much different paths. Mr. Sclavis is certainly the most adventurous clarinetist to come from Europe, with more than two dozen discs as a leader (on Label Bleu, ECM & Victo) or as a collaborator. Mr. Montera seems to be on very few discs, with one early solo disc on FMP and a later one on Grob. I've been fortunate to see/hear Sclavis live at Victo on a half dozens occasions throughout the years, as well as playing two nights at Tonic last year. I remember Montera from just one set at the Cooler in NYC with Thurston Moore. While each of Sclavis' discs on ECM is well thought out or composed, his discs on Victo are mainly improvised.
'Roman' also sounds pretty much an improvised affair, with little jazz influences or preparation. It is often dark and moody, with Jean-Marc sculpting his noisy, bent notes and various distortion devices for his electric guitar(s). Jean-Marc also plays some strong, fractured acoustic guitar that works well with the clarinet or soprano sax. Even Louis sounds like a much different player, using his soprano sax or clarinets for harsh and strange textures. Much of this has a tentative, solemn vibe, like the calm before a big storm. - BLG

KEITH TIPPETT*HOWARD RILEY*STEPHEN GREW*PAT THOMAS - Pianoforte (Slam 275/UK) Featuring Keith Tippett, Howard Riley, Stephen Grew and Pat Thomas on pianos. This extraordinary combination of four great British pianists was recorded live at Sheffield University in October of 2003. This endeavor was organized by Stephen Grew, the only pianist here not very well known. This disc consists of just duos and quartet pieces. It occasionally difficult to tell who is doing what, except for the fact that they mention who is the main soloist on the four quartet pieces in the liner notes. The first solo is by Grew and he sounds great as the others take their time to add occasional flourishes and spice. The playing here is rather dream-like with the pianos used like busy harps being supremely plucked in a flurry of quietly complex tapestry. I can hear Keith creating a dark undertow that rumbles below the surface, as well as his occasional tapping inside the piano. What is most amazing here is that the players often play orchestrally, even though it is completely improvised. As one play takes a solo and tells his story, the other player(s) add just the right amount of spice and interaction, to add depth and color to the unfolding story. The two duos with Grew and Thomas are superb, although they are the lesser known musicians. Tippett and Riley have dozen of recordings each, both of their careers starting in the late sixties. Pat Thomas has been playing and recording a good deal for the past decade, having worked with Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley and Lunge. This is certainly an incredible offering and a must for avant piano fan-addicts around the world. - BLG

NEW RELEASES FROM SEIGEN ONO'S 'SAIDERA' LABEL!!!
KAGEMITSU HASEGAWA - Yoshitsune's Ryuteki [Hybrid SA-CD] (Saidera 1026H; Japan) Japanese traditional music reproduced by People who researching about Japanese culture, must listen to it. Spirits of Samurai, Zen, KI, spiritual of tea selemony, Silence stay in this album. Memories of Sounds That Have Been Lost. This time he has approached the mind and sound of Yoshitsune. He once told me that when he plays the flute, he tries to be the best bamboo flutist throughout the history of Japan. It is customarily said in Japan that when you play an instrument before audience, you should leave your mind free from any thoughts, i.e. be no-minded in a positive sense (like in Zen Buddhism). Kagemitsu won't. He says, "If you try to erase all your thoughts, you are often trapped into the mindedness of trying to be no-minded." So, he tries to be single-minded, thinking only of doing his best. As a result, he attains the state of no-mindedness naturally. He knows how our mind works. In his play, "Ma" or a silent moment is not represented simply as "no sounds" but as "resourceful nothingness" from which sounds are to be generated. This is what Kagemitsu thinks is Ma of Gagaku that does not exist in conventional Western music theories. His musical philosophy is concentrated in this context. And it has proved to work well.

GREG KELLEY - i don't want to live forever (Little Enjoyer 1/Gameboy 73) Greg is one of the originators of the lower case improv, microtonal and microscopic approach to playing. Although he plays trumpet, it is often difficult to tell what he is doing unless you are watching him live. His longtime duo with saxist Bhob Rainey has carved out their sonic terrain. On this, his new solo effort he is playing trumpet and spring drum and all tracks are taken from his solo tour of the eastern U.S. in November of 2002. It appears as if all of the sounds have been manipulated in some way, looped, extracted, sliced and diced. Even Greg's signature breath-like sounds have been sampled and twisted into odd shapes. The source of the distorted sounds could be anything, it sounds like chimes have been used and bent beyond recognition. A strange, alien phrase or theme is occasionally repeated, giving this a cohesiveness. There is a long stretch that sounds like we are in a wind tunnel as time moves slowly along. The last ten minutes explore the more noisy side of things, industrial-like and other unnerving sounds throb as things get ruptured and static overtakes everything. As with other lower case improv and Erstwhile type of discs, this is not really about songs or melodies, it is more about the way these sounds affect us and take us somewhere else. This is quite successful at helping us to arrive at another somewhat disturbing state of mind. - BLG

MUSIC FOR HOMEMADE INSTRUMENTS [SKIP LAPLANTE/CAROLE WEBER/DAVID SIMONS] - The Pick Of The Litter (Homemade 4843) Music for Homemade Instruments is an ensemble of classically trained musicians who invent, build, compose for and perform on instruments made from trash and found objects. MFHMI was founded by Skip Laplante and Carole Weber twenty years ago. Their collection has grown to more than 250 such instruments. This fascinating disc features seven pieces by composers David Simons, Skip Laplante & Carole Weber, John Bertles. Lisa Karrer and Malvina Reynolds. David Simons' "This Hoary Perch" is for just intonation monochords and it is a hypnotic work for stretched strings and somber bass drum. Bertles' "The Evils of Pots" is a playful piece for 20 assorted pots and lids and lovely Gamelan sort of vibe. "Cremation Music" is also by Simons and is for piccolo mostly metal percussion, it based on music performed at cremation ceremonies in Bali. It sounds completely real with some strange, invented vocals thrown in for good measure. Ms. Reynolds' "Morningtown Ride" is a lullaby and features a can kora, percussion and tube trombones and charming, melancholy voices. "The Last Laf (or) Two Divided by Three" is a hilarious fairy tale told by 7-year old Roan Laplante and his parents, with exotic music based on a 12-tone scale. Skip & Carole's "Some Bang Goin' On" is inspired by music from Sumatra and features some strange oboe-like thing and more odd percussion. "Pamir" closes and is also by Skip and Carole and was inspired by fiddle music from the equestrian cultures of Central Asia. It features styrocellos, other weird string devices and assorted percussion. The twisted strings are pretty scary, buzzing and bowing and creating a bizarre dream-world that only insects could comprehend completely. - BLG

DUB GABRIEL - Bass Jihad (Azra 03) This is my man Dub Gabriel's second solo effort and again he's got it down. Our hero has worked with Bill Laswell, Qaballah Steppers, Baraka Orchestra and Samara Sound System. His first solo disc, 'Ascend' from last year was one of the few great dub efforts I've heard in recent memory. He is back again with a little help from Mark Deutsch on bazantar (an acoustic bass-like invention), Subluna on didgeridoo, Fred Stubbs on ney, Ahad Nazarzadeh on saz and a couple of MC's Young Sand and Khalil. Dub Gabriel is a strong producer, always doing an enchanting job of layering a swirling array of exotic percussion, cosmic snaking-charming double reeds, thick bass and mesmerizing echoed guitars and keyboards. This swell, sly music is mostly instrumental, the groove and ambiance always intoxicating. The occasional vocal bits are often sampled and used like another tasty ingredient in this mysterious and delectable stew. Yo Dub-mon, this sh*t is pretty ripe, supremely righteous and completely groovy! Word! - BLG

TAKUMA KANAIWA - The Lemurian Sounds of Takuma Kanaiwa (amukaT Recordings/self produced) This is a wonderful post/dub effort that was given to us by a young Japanese man named Takuma, who happened to come by DMG this past week. The musicians include Takuma on guitar, melodica, bass & sax with On Davis, Ansel Cridland & Glen Brown on guitars; Primus Luta on keyboards; Thierno Camara on bass; Ihsan Aton, Tom Ausberger & Ed Robinson on drums & percussion plus a half dozen vocalists. On "BDNP", Takuma does a beautiful of layering those instruments upon a great dub groove. Here he plays melodica, mbira, Moroccan reeds, jaw harp and that fat bass-line. Glen Brown is a fine singer with a few CDs in print and here sounds great with his charming voice. As bass is the central instrument in most reggae and dub music, Takuma's magical bass in the central ingredient on most of these tracks. A variety of fine singers are featured here, both as vocalists and as songwriters. The other great thing about this is that sublime, hypnotic dub production, adding just the right amount of echo to the percussion, background vocals and other selective sounds. One of the more unexpected delights found here is a great version of Trane's classic "Naima" played on a melodica.

PAUL FLAHERTY/CHRIS CORSANO DUO - Last Eyes ('Records' 07; USA) "Paul Flaherty and Chris Corsano have been searching the nut of freedom within their inner-consciousness together through the voice of free music for these past several years. While Flaherty continues his reign as the most under heard, well known, floor dropping inspired Saxophonist, Corsano has been breaking into the big time by assisting on recordings and performances by such hipsters as Six Organs Of Admittance, Sunburned Hand Of The Man, and Vampire Belt. For the past 5 years, the two have operated together in duo format as well as in collaborations with some of the finest freedom thinkers around such as Nmperign's Greg Kelly, Thurston Moore and Jim O'Rourke of Sonic Youth, Tony Conrad, Matt Heyner of Test and the No Neck Blues Band, Daniel Carter, Christina Carter and Heather Murray of Charalambides/Scorces, Wally Shoup, and Steve Swell. Together, Flaherty & Corsano seek to champion the cause of total free improvisation, an often misunderstood, underestimated, and sometimes even hated artform."

GARY SMITH / MUKAI CHIE - eight+ improvisations (paratactile 1117/UK) This features experimental UK guitarist Gary Smith with Ms. Mukai Chie on kokyu (or erhu), voice and percussion. Gary Smith plays electric guitar and has always followed his own muse, not sounding like anyone but himself. He's done duos with John Stevens & Joe Gallivan, has a power trio called MASS and has a couple of solo discs also on Paratactile. He seems to record on rare occasion. An erhu is a one string Chinese violin and it works well with Gary's clean, yet brittle tone, with well selective noise fragments. Mukai's ritualistic percussion drones and hums and fits well with Gary's twisted but rarely noisy guitar. The combination often has that stark Japanese free vibe, as both players toss ideas back and forth. Gary uses little distortion and he used it very selectively. I know Gary has a stereo guitar with another pick-up attached, so he can play or tap on opposite ends of the guitar and have different sounds come from two different amps, it does sound like this at times on this studio date as well. His quieter tapping sections work best with Mukai's bent bowed string(s) and hand percussion. There are also a couple of sections where Gary picks up the tempo and lets it rip, playing quickly and furiously while Mukai answers with her distant voice, twisted bowing or subtle, ristualistic percussion. This strange yet focused gem sounds like it could've been released on the IMJ (Improvised Music from Japan) label, another addition to a consistently strong a catalogue. - BLG

HUGH HOPPER & MATT HOWARTH - The Stolen Hour (Burning Shed 0204/UK) Music by Hugh Hopper and comics by Matt Howarth. The music portion features Hugh on bass guitar, guitar and rhythm loops; Robert Wyatt on cornet & voice loops; Frank van der Kooy, Pierre-Olivier Govin & Simon Picard on saxes; Didier Malherbe on flute loops and Jan Ponsford on voice. 'The Stolen Hour' refers to lost hour of daylight savings time, that was manipulated by the American media conglomerate to make it easier to cover the 2000 Summer Olympics in Australia. Hugh has long been working with loops, formerly tape-loops were used on Soft Machine 'Third' & 'Six', as well as Hugh's incredible first solo effort, '1884'.
On 'The Stolen Hour', Hugh creates a series of hypnotic grooves with bass and percussion loops. Three saxists, one flutist and Robert Wyatt's cornet all get a chance to solo over or add their unique sound or voice to these great grooves. Although I know Didier from his longtime work with Gong, and Simon Picard from his work in Paul Dunmall's Octet and with John Wolf Brennan, I don't know Frank or Pierre-Olivier very well. On a few of these tracks Hugh's beloved fuzz bass makes a grand appearance, sounding slightly different each time. That wonderful growling electric bass is what makes all of us Canterbury fans smile and feel at home in this often troubled world. There is a comic strip included on a PDF file on this great disc, I am looking forward to checking it out, as I am a fan of Matt Howarth as well. Yo Manny, please help me figure out how to access this hidden comic strip! - BLG

ART BEARS - The World As It Is Today (ReR AB3; UK) [New 2004 Re-mastered digipak edition] Digi-pack and remastered excellently by Bob Drake, this was the 3rd and final album by the successor band to Henry Cow. I'm not really sure why (short playing length? the press had gone onto other things to champion? it wasn't released stateside, unlike the first two?) but this one slipped under the radar of a lot of folks, compared to their 1st two. It's a very bleak, but also a very solid work. And very clever and sly in its own way - who else would have the opening lyrics for "The Song Of Investment Capitol Overseas be: "Out of town; my work takes me out of town"! With Dagmar Krause-vocals, Chris Cutler-drums, electronics & Fred Frith-guitars, keyboards, violin, etc. + all the rest of Henry Cow. Songs with powerful lyrics built upon experimental kernels. "A scathing, brutal and disturbingly honest venture into the horrors of contemporary inhumanity and political digression. Here Art Bears forage even more boldly into aspects of using the recording studio as a compositional instrument : A tape of a lawnmower is slowed down several steps to convincingly create the sounds of machine-gun fire and bombs. A Geiger counter is emulated by radically E.Q.ing drum sticks played on a tile flooring in the studio. No punches are pulled, and the band goes all-out on this, their final recording. The playing is aggressive and hefty, and the sound immaculate, intense and, at times, downright scary." - Steve Feigenbaum, Cuneiform

ART BEARS - Winter Songs (ReR AB2; UK) [New 2004 Re-mastered digipak edition] Second brilliant release by the blessed Art Bears. Digi-pack and remastered excellently by Bob Drake, this was the 2nd and best known album by the successor band to Henry Cow, as it was released in the States by The Residents' Ralph label, in the early 80's and at the peak of their market influence at that time. With Dagmar Krause-vocals, Chris Cutler-drums, electronics & Fred Frith-guitars, keyboards, violin, etc. + all the rest of Henry Cow. Songs with powerful lyrics built upon experimental kernels. This is many folks' favorite of their three. "Wintersongs...offers an even stronger, clearer set of artistic visions. Here the trio of ART BEARS stand alone, and the stripped- down sense of instrumentation, which almost resembles a standard combo (guitar, bass, piano, drums and singing), makes a simpler (though more poignant) musical statement. Often Fred Frith's penchant for angular melodies is forestalled, and re- placed with single note, "non-melodies" in a sort of minimalist, rhythmic accordance to the text's settings. Experimental studio work and effects abound, yet the sound is more economical and hard-hitting than the band's earlier work." - Steve Feigenbaum, Cuneiform
CD $14
ART BEARS - Hopes And Fears (ReR AB1; UK) [NEW 2004 REMASTER ...but without the 3 bonus cuts from the previous edition] "Finally the 3 excellently re-mastered Art Bears albums are beginning to be released separately from the box. Digi-pack and re-mastered excellently by Bob Drake, this was the 1st album by the successor band to Henry Cow, which was actually recorded AS a Henry Cow album but released as by Art Bears when some members of Cow didn't feel it was a "Cow" release. With Dagmar Krause-vocals, Chris Cutler-drums, electronics & Fred Frith- guitars, keyboards, violin, etc. + all the rest of Henry Cow [Tim Hodgkinson, Georgie Born and Lindsay Cooper]... Songs with powerful lyrics built upon experimental kernels. This grouping made one of the most powerful statements yet in the world of Art Rock. 'Hopes and Fears' shows the group at its most formidable stage in terms of composition. The pieces are often highly complex, with ideas that zig-zag through a maze of musical imagery, highlighting the group at their peak of virtuosity. Stunning!" - Steve Feigenbaum, Cuneiform

ROBERT WYATT - His Greatest Misses [Ltd Ed] (Hannibal/Ryko 1282; Japan) A Japanese limited edition comp imported to the U.S. by Ryko for sale at a lower price, it covers 3 decades of releases in its 17 cuts, and makes up for the fact that you might have most of these songs on other albums by having the rare long [!] version of his hit cover single "I'm A Believer" and the Elvis Costello song, penned especially for Wyatt song and recorded by him first, "Shipbuilding", and his cover of Eubie Blake's "Memories Of You", all three of which are not currently available on any other CD. And beautiful new art for the mini-Lp style gatefold cover, both inside and out, by [you guessed it] that reknown children's book illustrator [and still Mrs. Wyatt], Alfreda Benge!

IVOR CUTLER - An Elpee And Two Epees (Decca; UK) 28 tracks of stories, songs and prose all on one CD for the very first time! 15 cuts from the 1961 album 'Who Tore Your Trousers?', 7 cuts from the 1959 ep 'Ivor Cutler Of Y'Hup', and 6 cuts from the 1961 ep "Get Away From The Wall". The 'oblique musical philosopher' has to be heard to be believed! extensive booklet notes by Mark Powell, who oversaw this reissue in the same quality manner he brought to Caravan reissues and other prog releases on the Eclectic label!!

FUCHSIA - Fuchsia (Night Wings 002/Italy) First legit reissue of this UK folk album, originally issued in 1971 on Kingdom Records. Digipak with 16 page book of lyrics, notes and photos. "Their sole 1971 LP straddled gothic beauty and horror, and remains a surreal blend of joy and madness, a bewitching compound of gothic acid-folk, Canterbury whimsy and pop melody, complete with Pre-Raphaelite female backing vocals and highly ornate string arrangements...Fuchsia was unpredictable yet teemed with melody: eloquent string arrangements and rock rhythms collided and meshed with results veering from tempestuous to pastoral. 'Gone with the Mouse', and 'A Tiny Book' brought Syd Barrett-esque naivetØ, 'Shoes and Ships' and the Durant/Chudley Louise-era collaboration 'Another Nail' were set to sweeping orchestral arrangements, while 'The Nothing Song' hovered in the realm of psychedelia . Then they added dreamy pop-rock with Chudley's 'Me and My Kite'(also from the Louise repertoire) and Durant's 'Just Anyone'..." - John O'Regan/Mojo.
Every week the Forced Exposure new release list touts some long lost psych of folk/psych gem as the greatest thing since... Most of the time I am disappointed, but this time I was actually blown away by this buried treasure. What's also interesting is that their leader Tony Durrant worked with Chris Cutler (pre-Henry Cow) in 1971. The band was a sextet with three female string players who also sang lovely backup vocals, rather unusual for the time, this was also pre-E.L.O. The music is an endearing blend of complex folk-rock with some early progressive ideas. Produced by David Hitchcock, who also produced Caravan, Camel, Genesis and Curved Air, this music comes from a similar era and has that wonderful, fairy tale like elegance, yet still rocks at times. Truly an essential disc from those bygone times. - BLG

WE JUST FOUND SOME COPIES OF 3 DMG FAVES OF YEARS AGO...
MARC RIBOT Y LOS CUBANOS POSTIZOS [THE PROSTHETIC CUBANS] - The Prosthetic Cubans (Atlantic 83116; USA) Like several others in the downtown scene, Ribot has formed a group to create an outlet for an interest in ethnic music, in this case, the music of the late Cuban composer, instrumentalist, and bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez, who wrote most of the tunes on this CD. "It's party time at the ole hacienda and a groove fest Cuban style. This cheesy/latin/post-surf twang/psych/guitar is up front & in yo face. It just makes me wanna jump up & down & smile & snap my fingers! Although Ribot has been at it for over a decade, he has really hit his stride this year. His incredible playing on John Zorn's chamber Masada releases, as well as his burning guitar on recent sets with Zorn, Medeski & drummer, live. Ribot often dives into noise, and loves to do fractured lines, creating groups that would push the patience of some fans. On Marc's major label debut, he shows how to pull off relatively straight Cuban stylings, opening them up to new surroundings, revving them up or making them all the more gracious, quiet, and lovely. Even Ribot's voice, while singing or speaking his bad version of Spanish, still has a goofy charm. Ribot gets the minimal instrumentation for backing-acoustic bass & percussion, with occasional drums, organ & horns on a tune or two. His playing is in top form, either playing ultra-subtle on a few pieces or going for the jugular when the heat is on." - BLG

BERNIE WORRELL With TONY WILLIAMS/BOOTSY COLLINS/GEORGE CLINTON et al - Blacktronic Science (Gramavision 79474; USA) Bernie Worrell (harpsichord, Hammond B-3 organ, Mini Moog, synthesizers, melodica, clavinet, electric piano, vocals); George Clinton, James Sumbi, Gary "Mudbone" Cooper, Debra Barsha (vocals); Maceo Parker (tenor saxophone); Fred Wesley (trumpet); Bootsy Collins (bass); Tony Williams, Sly Dunbar (drums); Aiyb Dieng (cowbell, talking drums, chatan); Darryl Mack, Bill Laswell (programming).Recorded at Greenpoint Studio, Brooklyn, New York and Sorcerer Sound, New York. Includes liner notes by Bill Laswell (producer).
Though he didn't cut as visually striking a figure, keyboardist Bernie Worrell was as instrumental to the success and style of P-Funk as George Clinton. Worrell's trademark squiggly synth line on "Flashlight" is one of the most sampled sounds in hip-hop history, and his '70s Minimoog work is the source that all retro-R&B/funk acts look to when replicating vintage synthesizer sounds. By the '90s, he had progressed far beyond the P-Funk sound, as BLACKTRONIC SCIENCE makes clear. The album's opener "Revelation in Black Light" is a semi-classical piece powered by Worrell's orchestral keyboard manipulation. "Flex" places things firmly in the '90s with its hip-hop beat and rap vocal. "Time Was" is one of the more P-Funkish efforts, where Worrell's quirky, vibrato-heavy keyboard style comes to the forefront. It's swiftly followed, however, by the jazzy, sax-driven "Blood Secrets," which displays the breadth of Worrell's rhythmic and harmonic capabilities. Ultimately, BLACKTRONIC SCIENCE updates Worrell's funk legacy without abandoning the foundation on which his legend was built
"A schizophrenic album - half topnotch funk-rock & half excellent straight acoustic jazz with THE MAN: TONY WILLIAMS playing his heart out, this belongs in every collection. All Thumbs UP!" - MannyLunch

CARMEL [CARMEL McCOURT/JIM PARRIS/GERRY DARBY] - Collected: The London Years (London 828219; UK) CARMEL the band was formed in Manchester 20 years ago. It was an interesting time, punk had lost steam, and change was in the wind. Two students with music in their soul, Carmel McCourt and Jim Parris got together and with drummer Gerry Darby (Jim's cousin) began a long career of defeating definition. Their first single, taken from their eponymously titled mini-LP - "Storm" - reached No 1 in the independent charts and CARMEL was signed immediately to London Records. Their first album for London, "The Drum is Everything" (produced by Mike Thorne), drew praise for the fiery passion of all three members. Parris and Darby remarkably conjured the effect of a full ensemble backing to McCourt's powerful vocals and were able to alternate between soulful ballads, gospel, blues and stomping jazz. The singles "Bad Day" and "More More More" both went Top 20 in the UK. The following album, "The Falling" (produced by Brian Eno, Hugh Jones, David Motion) made CARMEL one of the biggest names in France achieving Gold status as well as charting in Belgium, Germany and Holland. "Sally" the first single lifted from the album sold 500 000 copies in France alone. With the critical and commercial success awarded both "The Falling" and after the next album "Everybody's Got A Little Soul", [it is criminally negligent that this collection does not include the title cut and its reprise from this] again produced entirely by Mike Thorne, producers were queuing up to work with CARMEL. 1989 saw the release of "Set Me Free", the last of her 4 London albums, with the likes of Brian Eno and veteran R&B producer Pete Wingfield, and even Jim Parris himself adding their individual touches to the broad range of CARMEL material. The critics were bowled over with a Five Star Q review describing the album as "incendiary".
This 1990's best-of compilation "Collected" put the band's career into perspective culling songs from all their albums and highlighting the breadth, depth and vitality of their sound. Included in this compilation are the alternate 7" version of the ENO produced '..And I Take It For Granted" with the domed-one on backing vocals, as well as her duet with Johnny Hallyday, "J'Oublierai Ton Nom", only previously released in France on Hallyday's LP "Gang" . Together with the group Weekend, Carmel set the stage for the jazz-pop siege that followed by artists like Sade, Swing Out Sister, Eighth Wonder Of The World, Working Week, et al.
"White Irish girl sounds like a young Aretha Franklin! Too bad I can't offer the individual 4 albums from which this is compiled - that makes this CD even more necessary still. An all time favorite artist for me - and you know how many thumbs that is!" - MannyLunch

RARE EASTERN EUROPEAN EDITIONS OF THE "PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE' ALBUMS!!
[Unfortunately we have run out of copies of their first release 'Egon Bundy's Happy Hearts Cub Banned' even before this email went out, and we're hoping to get more...]
This band's debut may well have been one of the most amazing and radical records to be released during the punk era (or any era for that matter), recorded under the most extreme conditions in the years before punk rock was a reality (1973-1974). Prague's Plastic People of the Universe, and the band they later became, Pulnoc, remain one of rock & roll's great stories of triumph and how great music can be produced and survive even in the most hostile of environments. The band was founded in 1968 soon after 500,000 Soviet troops invaded Czechoslovakia.. From 1970 until the "Velvet Revolution" of 1989 that ended Soviet domination, the Plastic People lived a mostly illegal existence, with two of their members, Ivan Jirous and Jaroslav Vozniak, doing lengthy stretches in prison. Influenced by Zappa, English progressive rock/radical politicos Henry Cow, Captain Beefheart, and the Velvet Underground, the Plastic People appropriated the avant-garde leanings and anti-authoritarian outrage of these bands while working in their own sense of dread and desperation. Remember, according to Soviet law, they could not record, press, and distribute albums or play gigs; still, they did all three surreptitiously, with the help of their numerous artist friends who made up an indefatigable support network known as the Invisible Organization...
[capsule descriptions by our good friend, Steve Feigenbaum , Cuneiform label honcho!]

SHIVA'S HEADBAND - In The Primo Of Life (Akarma 292; Italy) This CD edition contains two bonus cuts: "Lost Austin Blues" and "My Baby".
You never know what changes time will bring, least of all with bands, but few have undergone the dramatic alteration of Shiva's Headband on this, their fourth album. Back in the '60s, the Texans reeled out a heady psychedelic-rock brew, but unlike most of their contemporaries, they kept on bubbling across the next decade and beyond. In the Primo of Life was originally released in 1983, an album true to its title and brimming with viv, vim, and good humor, so much so, that one can't help but savor every single minute within. But it's the diversity of life that Headband celebrate here -- the joy of smoking ganja down at the "Riverside," the sensuous bite of "Chili Verde," the possibilities of the instrumental "Afrodeez." However, none of those songs's titles give wind to their actual sound; "Riverside" is indeed reggae based, but reggae as fabulously played by a genre-challenged Eastern European R&B band; "Chili" whirls through an urban-lite funk atmosphere, dragging that lost gypsy violinist along for the ride, while "Afrodeez" blends pattering congos to what sounds like Asian instruments, twittering birds, and evocative violin. Then there's "Banjoke," the joke being the banjo sounds like it's being played by a Balkan. "Beginning" is even more humorous, a sparkling '80s rocker resplendent with organ, but driven by a bass riff ripped right out of the hands of Iron Butterfly's "Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida." And neither "Woman's Blues," composed and sung by Suzy Perskin, nor bandleader Spencer Perskins' own "Why I Sing the Blues really fit the blues bill, the former too fast paced, the latter too sweet to be sorrowing, but both wonderful nonetheless. However, it's "Upside Down" that really captures the set's soul, with its good-time rocking feeling, and pick-yourself-up message. Which makes the inclusion of two bonus tracks of later vintage totally extraneous and decidedly out of place. This album stands brilliantly, and doesn't need extras to entice. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, AMG

ROLAND BRIVAL with STEVE POTTS/CAMEL ZEKRI - Waka (Isma'a 2006; EEC) Last year, our friend Ali from Quadrophonic Records sold us a bunch of interesting reissues of African and Caribbean music made by world travelers based in France. Roland Brival's 'Creole Gypsy" was first released in 1980 and just reissued last year. 'Waka' is Roland's new disc and it is another savory blend of Caribbean, Creole and African influences. Roland's band this time includes Bouchra Jalid on vocals, Steve Potts (longtime Steve Lacy collaborator) on alto & soprano saxes, Camel Zekri (Ron Anderson cohort) on guitar, Georges Edouard Nouel on Fender Rhodes and regular piano, Eric Vinceno on bass, Roger Raspall on percussion and Jean Claude Montredon on drums. Roland writes catchy, infectious songs that will stay in your mind for a long time after the disc is over. This disc is a bit on the more commercial side, yet it is still adventurous in parts. Stripped down to just acoustic guitar and voice on a couple of tracks, this is fine to mellow out to. Sublime melodies, lovely production and an exquisite treat.

SHAMEK FARRAH and FOLKS - La Dee La La (Quadraphonic 1105) Second fine endeavor from this 10 to 20 piece modern jazz ensemble recorded in June of 1978 and whose first album was on Strata East. Featuring Shamek Farrah & Grant Reed on saxes, Malachi Thompson & Abdullah Khalid on trumpets, Marvin Neal on trombone, Harry Jenson on guitar, Sonelius Smith & Saeed Amir on piano, Hasan Jenkins & Kiyoto Fujiwara on basses, Ron Rahsaan, Ayon Falu & Lenny King on drums & percussion plus Ghanniya Green & Vivian Chandler on vocals. The only players I recognize on this record are Malachi Thompson (for Sun Ra), Sonelius Smith and Kiyoto Fujiwara (for Joe Lee Wilson), all prominent members of the loft jazz scene, from this same period of time. The title track is an endearing Afropop/jazz song with lovely wordless vocals from Ms. Green and some sunny solos from Shamek's soprano sax and muted trumpet from Mr. Khalid. "Waiting for Marvin" reminds me of early Earth, Wind and Fire, when they more jazzy. More exquisite solos from Shamek's alto sax, Malachi Thompson's trumpet and Saeed Amir's piano. "The White Lady" is a sort of Latin groove piece with some fine solos from Malachi's trumpet and piano by Sonelius Smith. "And Along Came Ron Rahsaan" has another enchanting melody and bright, sunny solos Shamek's soprano, Marvin Neal's trombone and Saeed's piano. Lovely as a carefree day in early Spring. - BLG

CD $13.
MARY LOU WILLIAMS - Black Christ Of The Andes (Smithsonian Folkways 40816; USA) [The 2004 reissue contains four previously unreleased bonus tracks.] Complex and brooding suites by jazz artists have often received mixed reviews. Whether hailed as brilliant and visionary or slammed as self-indulgent and trite -- Ellington's Black, Brown and Beige, Charles Mingus' infamous Town Hall Concert, or even Wynton Marsalis' Blood on the Fields all come to mind -- these works are, if nothing else, great risks for the artists involved. At the time of its initial performance, "Black Christ of the Andes" (or "St. Martin de Porres") was called everything from "blues stripped of its accent" to a "hokey prayer," prompting Williams to cut it from her repertoire before the release of the LP in 1964. An unfortunate fate for a very enjoyable and, now, highly regarded piece of music. Williams explained her pioneering concept of pairing jazz with spirituals as an attempt to heal the disparity between the gifted nature of the African-American and his tendency toward the worst kinds of sin. In fact, the original title for this LP was Music for Disturbed Souls. Certainly, by 1962 others had employed the modes and feel of the church into jazz, but Williams' use of the Ray Charles Singers (no relation to the other Ray Charles) added an element that made "St. Martin," an a cappella choral piece, a much more church-oriented affair than, say, John Coltrane's "Spiritual." Williams' vision, like Coltrane's, was at times dark and sobering while at others full of warmth and hope. It would have been completely out of place, however, at the Village Vanguard. This is a piece that belongs, if not in the church, then certainly out of the nightclub circuit. Other tracks on this LP, though, like her sublime rendition of "It Ain't Necessarily So," would have been welcome in their dark and smoky confines. Otherwise, expect a jump blues number, a handful of trio cuts (some featuring Percy Heath), and a smattering of various vocal combinations throughout. A number of styles are represented here and they weave amongst one another with ease and grace. This is a very enjoyable record with some especially rewarding piano solos by Williams. ~ Brandon Burke, AMG

MARY LOU WILLIAMS - Zoning (Smithsonian Folkways 40811; USA) Mary Lou Williams emerged in the early '70s after a long period in which she worked in the Catholic church to resume her always-stimulating career as a jazz pianist. On this CD reissue, one of her finest recordings of her later years has been brought back and augmented by two previously unissued performances. Williams performs in duos and trios with bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Mickey Roker, uses Zita Carno on second piano during a couple of the more avant-garde pieces, and also performs some trios with bassist Milton Suggs and Tony Waters on congas. Rather than sounding like a veteran of the 1920s, Mary Lou Williams sounds 40 years younger, shows the influence of McCoy Tyner and hints at free jazz in spots. An often-surprising set of modern jazz. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

MARY LOU WILLIAMS - Zodiac Suite (Smithsonian Folkways 40810; USA) Mary Lou Williams's Zodiac Suite, a 12-piece work with a different theme made for each of the signs of the zodiac (and keeping in mind the personalities of a few jazz musicians born during each period), was composed and first recorded in 1945. With the assistance of bassist Al Lucas and drummer Jack "The Bear" Parker, pianist Williams performs these moody and often introspective (but occasionally playful) sketches in a forward-looking swing style. Five alternate takes have been added to the original program on this CD reissue which, although not quite essential, has its interesting moments. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG

MARY LOU WILLIAMS - Mary Lou's Mass (Smithsonian Folkways 40815; USA) The long-awaited reissue [and 1st time on CD] of Mary Lou Williams's magnum opus of religious jazz: Mary Lou's Mass. Newsweek called the score "An encyclopedia of black music, richly represented from spirituals to bop to rock." This is Williams's "Music for Peace," a landmark recording which addressed many of the social ills of the 1960s and 70s. It is perhaps the most openly religious jazz recording made at that time. In her own words, it is " Music for the Soul." 32-page booklet, extensive notes, photos, 60 minutes.
