BILL COLE & WILLIAM PARKER - Two Masters Live at The Prism (Boxholder 047) Featuring Bill Cole on digeridoo, flute, sona, shenai, nagaswarm, hojok & voice and William Parker on bass, doson ngoni, flute, nagaswarm, talking drum, whistle & voice. This sublime gem was recorded live in Charlottesville, Virginia on April 1st of 2004 and is one of the most enchanting duo efforts in recent memory. There is an exquisite balance of mostly two exotic and ancient sounding acoustic instruments on each piece. Both of these musicians are masters of a verity of ethnic instruments, strings, double reeds, flutes, percussion and the digeridoo. Listening to the harp or kora-like doson ngoni, I am reminded of the magic music of Don Cherry, who also played that and a number of the same instruments found here. Contrabassist supreme, William Parker, only plays his main instrument on a couple of the pieces here, but still lets those organic string & wood sounds ring true, vibrate and hum with the natural sounds of life. For those who take the time to listen, this is indeed healing music for the hurting planet on which we all live. - BLG

DAVID LIEBMAN & ELLERY ESKELIN - Different but the Same (Hatology 615) Featuring Dave & Ellery on tenor saxes, Tony Marino on bass and Jim Black on drums & percussion. This is an interesting two tenor quartet which featuring bassist Tony Marino who has worked with Dave Liebman and drum wiz Jim Black, who has played in Ellery Eskelin's great trio with Andrea Parkins for the past decade. Dave and Ellery comes from different generations, with Dave's long career stretching back some 35 plus years. Ellery studied for a bit and soon collaborated with Mr. Liebman when Mr. Eskelin moved to town in 1983. Both of their groups joined forces to perform Trane's cosmic classic "Meditations" in the eighties and both saxists played in a trio with John Hollenbeck more recently.
'Different But The Same' features both original tunes by both saxists as well as covers by Tadd Dameron, Wayne Shorter, Lee Konitz and Cole Porter. Both tenor players have swell, well-worn tones and sound wonderful together. Both saxists also balance older and newer jazz styles or sounds just right as well. Liebman's "Tie Those Laces" has a great, off-kilter Monk-like theme, which keeps the rhythm team on their toes and provides a challenging structure for the saxists to solo over. Tadd Dameron's "Gnid" might seem like an odd choice from the straighter, swinging side of jazz, yet both saxists take strong solos in that great blustery spirit. Ellery's "You Call It" opens with a hypnotic theme for droning tenors and bowed bass and soon breaks down to a freer, spirited duo for his tenor and Jim's drums. The title track (by Liebman) has some great, glowing harmonies for both saxes with subtle bowed bass and percussion, quite a superb, somber gem. There is cool medley of three standards, "Subconscious-Lee", "Hot House" and "What is This Thing Called Love", where the saxes get a chance to solo together and apart, in between some fine soloing from Tony's double bass. A spirited Q & A session. Ellery's "How Do I Know" has an odd fractured structure, with the bass & drums in lead role, as the saxes play poignantly in the background. Wayne Shorter's "Vonetta" opens with some suspense-filled solo bass, soon both tenors weave sublimely around one another, with fine, heartfelt solos from each, their tones gorgeous and rather similar. Dave's "Gun Wars" is last and starts with one of those great, free drum solos that Jim Black works so well. The saxes enter and everyone wails together, as the rhythm team swirls freely, the saxes snarl some tight, twisted lines around each other. Both duos circle around one another in intersecting orbits, the saxes slightly bent, yet shadowing each other just right. Truly, this is a unique quartet, moving through some surprising directions. - BLG

CHRIS CUTLER -Twice Around The Earth (ReR CC2/UK) "An experiment in listening. These compositions are an offshoot of the daily sound-scape program I ran for Resonance FM radio between July 2001-2002, which consisted of commissioned real-time recordings made all around the world between 23.30 and midnight GMT (the time of the broadcast). This CD begins with material from these broadcasts confecting, as it were, two composites of the Earth and a few of its inhabitants, somewhat analogous to what an impossible satellite ear with pinpoint acuity might hear in transit - plus one ear-cleaning stretch between them, taken from a single hear-point. I have tried to make these pieces both open and to work on parallel levels: not only do they have their own narrative and aesthetic qualities, but I hope they also offer a meditation on listening and not listening, interpretation and structure, chance and microphonics. The list of ears around the world who supplied basic material is too long to print here, but it includes many names familiar from these catalogues, and many from the still young sound-scape and phonographic community. Full details of people and places are given in the booklet, along with artwork and thorough notes. You have to trust me on this, itØs a really engaging record..." - Chris Cutler
A few of the artists involved include David Lee Myers, Otomo, Dave Kerman, Annie Gosfield, Bill Harkelroad, Peter Cusak, Jim Denley, Amy Denio, Wadi Gysi & Phil Zampino. There are 82 tracks here, most under a minute. The pieces are continuous and seamlessly woven into a fascinating fabric, an ongoing journey. Dozens of snippets of passing people, cars, wind, water, occasional dialogue, buzzing, scraping, radio, naked and amplified layers of voices in different languages, recordings, singing, motor cycles, electronic sounds, all kaleidoscopicly unfolding. Similar to Chris Brown's recent disc on Pogus, another under-recognized gem. - BLG

BOB DRAKE-The Shunned Country (ReR CTA SC01/UK) "52 songs of strange events, places and things. Includes 20 original paintings by Ray O'Bannon"-Bob. The songs are brief, amusingly creepy or creepily amusing (takes your pick!) with really nice creepy/cool paintings to accompany the mood. "Perhaps the scariest thing is that each of these miniatures is a fully formed, fully orchestrated and complete structure - no lazy snippets here - and Bob plays all the parts with his famously Paganini-esque virtuosity in spooky variable-tempo synchrony - packing more ideas and material into 50 seconds than most could manage on an entire album. There is complexity here, disguised as simplicity; production genius disguised as eccentricity; the pursuit of an aesthetic of exquisite imperfection. These are ears that have heard beyond technical perfection (too easy, once you have the trick) and moved on to something else."

COR FUHLER NONET With AB BAARS/TONY BUCK/TOBIAS DELIUS/WILBERT DE JOODE et al - Corkestra (Data 44; Netherlands) Pianist Cor Fuhler studied with Misha Mengelberg and has worked with assorted ICPers in the past, and a few of them are featured on this release - namely reedsmen Ab Baars & Tobias Delius and bassist Wilbert de Joode. The rest of the band includes Michael Vatcher on percussion/singing saw/hammer dulcimer, Tony Buck on percussion, Ex bassist Andy Moor on electric guitar, Anne La Berge on flutes, and Nora Mulder on cymbalom. Those of you who follow the Dutch/ICP/Breuker axis of eurojazz/improv probably have at least an inkling of what you're in for with this record. With that said, prepare for a pleasant surprise. A heavily percussive record, the more broadened sound palette on display here takes many of the more tried-and-true post-fluxus insanities of dutch improv and gives them a new wardrobe - lots of organ, wow-and-flutter guitarwork, contact mics, that sort of thing. The result is almost like that of an "Electric ICP Orchestra," if one can fathom such a thing! One of the year's best thusfar! -Mikey "IQ" Jones.

IGNOBLE VERMINE - A Tribute to Ptose (Musea 8678/France) Ptose were an odd progressive band from France that existed in the early 1980's, often compared to The Residents. Nope, I never heard of them either, considering they made three difficult to find discs. This wonderfully bizarre compilation is a tribute to them with some 19 tracks of European experimental bands covering their material, bands known and mostly unknown. The known bands include Klimperei, Pierre Bastian & Mecanium and Laurent Pernice. Considering I've only heard of three of the dozen groups involved, there is a strong consistency of weird spirit that flows throughout. Twisted pop music, slivers of new wave, naØve yet charming electronic sounds, creative drum machine segments, unexpectedly silly sections, techno beats, nightmarish twists and turns, well selected noise guitar, strange samples, warped voices, the joyous use of toy instruments by Klimperei, the leftfield wackiness of The Residents runs throughout. If I didn't know better, I would think that this is really just one band, not a dozen of different entities. The cover art collage is also ridiculously cool, as is the inside booklet, which features a collection of insect close-ups. - BLG

ROBERT EEN - Mystery Dances (Starkland 212) An exquisite collection of pieces from 1989 - 1992, featuring Mr. Een on cello, voice & compositions with longtime collaborators Carter Burwell on accordion and Hearn Gadbois on percussion, plus the voices of Timothy Hill and Nina Mankin. Robert Een has traveled the world and explored the music and cultures of the Far East: Japan, Korea, China, Cambodia, Taiwan & India, and studied overtone singing in Tibet. He worked closely with Meredith Monk for 14 years ('78 to '92) and has written and performed music for dance, theatre and films. This is his 7th disc as a leader or solo performer and last week I reviewed an even newer disc of his. 'Mystery Dances' was released in 2002, although this is the first time we have them gem in stock. In some ways, I am reminded of the late Arthur Russell who also played cello and sang simultaneously in his own unique and charming way. The blending of cello, accordion and hand drums is a magical one, a perfectly balanced trio, which weaves its sound into an austere and dream-like wonder. As Robert plays his haunting and hypnotic repeating cello figures, Carter's accordion moves with similar lines, Hearn punctuates with percussion perfectly as the voice(s) also add superb ornamentation. The music is often quite delicate, melancholy and occasionally filled with the suspense of drifting, ghost-like voices. This immensely enchanting endeavor is the perfect soundtrack for a magic carpet ride to the heavens. - BLG

NORMAND GUILBEAULT - Mingus Erectus (Ambiances Magnetiques 134) This extraordinary live tribute to Charles Mingus is the fifth superb offering from the great Montreal based contrabassist Normand Guilbeault for the Ambiances Magnetiques label. His marvelous ensembles features Jean Derome on saxes & flute, Ivanhoe Joliceur on trumpet & bugle, Mathieu Belanger on clarinets, Mr. Guilbeault on bass & voice and Claude Lavergne on drums. All tunes but one by Mingus, all arrangements by Guilbeault and one original tribute tune by Jean Derome. The majority of small group recording by Mingus usually feature quintets or sextets, so it is appropriate the Guilbeault also use an inspired quintet. The only difference is that Normand uses no pianist, a rarity for Mingus himself, but the fifth player is a clarinetist. Normand has selected a number of Mingus' finest pieces and they are done with passion, fire and that inventive spirit. Like Mingus, Normand also leads the band with his bass at the center of the action. Besides Guilbeault, the only player I am most familiar with is that wonderful alto saxist, Jean Derome. Still all three horns play magnificently throughout. On "Pithecanthropus Erectus", the alto sax, bass clarinet and trumpet swirl around that feisty rhythm team, sailing together and held together just right. That great Mingus spirit is kept alive with some truly inspired playing. Very nice to hear that bass clarinet and regular clarinet, reminding us those great days when Eric Dolphy was in the Mingus band. Another great thing about Mingus was the way his bands drew from the long history of jazz. Here also we get those righteous blues spirits, those Ellington-like earthy note-bending vivacious horns, as well as Latin, dixieland and a wealth of other influences or styles. One of many highlights here is their great version of "Fables of (George Dubya) Faubus", updated with some most appropriate and hilarious lyrics about our evil president and his cronies. Jean Derome's "MDMD" is another gem in the Mingus spirit with superb, bluesy solos from each horn. If you are as knocked out by this excellent disc as I am, I recommend you check out Jean Derome's swell Monk-tribute trio efforts on this same label, as well as any of the other fine CDs from the grand Normand Guilbeault. - BLG

DAVID TUDOR - Live Electronic Music (Electronic Music Foundation 054) This features three long solo electronic pieces recorded live in 1970 (Japan), 1974 (UC Berkeley?) and 1984 (actuated by wire flowers made by Jackie Monnier). This is the first time that these three pieces, David Tudor's unique electronic sounds have been released on CD. "Anima Pepsi" (1970) was recorded at the Pepsi Pavilion in the Expo in Osaka, Japan and Tudor transforms recordings of animal and insect sounds. The sounds themselves have been altered so that it is impossible to tell from what they were originally. Strange, eerie, alien sounds softly unfold. Mutant insect-like voices, scrapes, squeaks and rumbles. Gently disturbing. "Toneburst" (1975) is made entirely from feedback and is more violent and unnerving. Sharp and jagged sounds erupt fiercely, yet are well selected to evoke a variety of harsh interjections and intense outbursts. "Dialects" (1984) involves two interactive streams, the first from the beating of an insect's wings and the second from alpha waves. Both streams have been manipulated by a Vocoder and percussion generator. More quietly disturbing rumbling, twisted fragments, random percussive eruptions, slowly building to a denser, nightmarish conclusion.

CONNIE CROTHERS QUINTET - Live: Outpost Performance Space, Albuquerque New Mexico (New Artists 1041) Connie Crothers on piano; Richard Tabnik on alto sax; Ratzo Harris on bass & Roger Mancuso on drums; plus Mark Weber, the poet. It's been more than a quarter century since the iconoclastic and influential jazz pianist Lennie Tristano, yet still his influence continues through those he taught and inspired. Connie Crothers has grown beyond these influences, yet remains indebted to Tristano and is still one of the most gifted jazz pianists around. Tristano was extremely inspired by Bird and bebop, so too Connie Crothers. The first tune, "Bird's Words" erupts at a furious tempo, both Connie and Richard (on alto sax) take explosive solos, as well as a burning solo from the bass. Connie composed the four long tracks here and each one provides some challenging charts for the quartet to play through. "Carols Dream" is indeed somber and dream-like and magical solos for the alto and piano. Poet Mark Weber gets to do four short poems and each one tells a mysterious short story. One poem/piece is called "Warne Marsh", another Tristano cohort and does a nice job of describing what is special about the late Mr. Marsh. An excellent excursion of modernized post-bop coolness. - BLG

EVAN PARKER With JOHN COXON/ASHLEY WALES - Evan Parker With Birds: For Steve Lacy (Treader 01; UK) Featuring the incredible Evan Parker with birds: The celebrated saxophonist duets with Northern European birdsongs. A tribute to the late Steve Lacy. John Coxon and Ashley Wales (the duo a/k/a Spring Heel Jack) provide the soundscapes, while Evan Parker plays his trusty soprano and tenor saxophones. Evan's saxes were lusciously recorded in Gateway studios, while Ashley recorded his soundscapes at various locations on the Isle of Scilly. A superbly blended and balanced dreamscape and truly, a sonic treat. The light green soft cardboard cover sports a gold embossed kangaroo. - -BLG

EVAN PARKER/MARK SANDERS/JOHN COXON With ASHLEY WALES - Trio With Interludes (Treader 02; UK) Energetic fusing from trio of Evan Parker [tenor saxophone] Mark Sanders [drums] and John Coxon [Roland synth] interspersed with grand piano, harpsichord, national guitar, riveted tambour & percussion interludes by John Coxon and Ashley Wales. Inspired by the Sun Ra album Nuits de la Fondation Maeght. Both Spring Heel Jack-men (Coxon & Wales) have continually grown into strong improvisers throughout their last four fine discs on Thirsty Ear, and here again show themselves to be excellent, crafty sonic manipulators. And no, they don't mess with the sound of Evan's grand saxes, that would be sacrilegious to out-jazz purists worldwide. Lovely sky blue soft cardboard cover with a gold embossed walrus, makes this one another's collector's dream. - BLG

WORLD-FAMOUS -THO' HARD TO GET- THE BELGIAN 'CRAMMED' LABEL IS IN STOCK AGAIN WITH SOME NEW TITLES AND MUCH CLAMORED FOR CLASSICS..

KONONO NO. 1 - Congotronics 1 (Crammed Craw 27; Belgium) Congotronics 1 is the long-awaited album by Konono No. 1, a band founded in the '70s by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembe (a traditional instrument sometimes called "sanza" or "thumb piano", consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band's line-up includes three electric likembes (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There's also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring these famous megaphones.
The album was produced and recorded in Kinshasa by one of the best connoisseurs of Congolese music and old car parts, our own Vincent Kenis.

AKSAK MABOUL - Onze Dances Pour Combattre La Migraine (Crammed 101; Belgium) FINALLY ISSUED ON CD FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!!! An absolute cult classic of the 70's RIO (Henry Cow, Slapp Happy, Faust...) movement, held in such high esteem that people like Fred Frith, Chris Cutler and Catherine Jauniaux (who is also on one cut of this 1st album) did not have to be asked twice when asked if they wanted to participate in the follow up album 3 years later - although all involved agree that the first album was even better! All that is, except the creative mastermind behind it, Marc Hollander (also the founder of the Crammed/Made To Measure label), who for many years did not want to re-release it. Anyway I can't do better than to quote the below - they've hit it on the head!
"Amidst the restless atmosphere of the 1970s, an LP emerged as if from nowhere that started as if it were a radio broadcast for children. Where did this music come from? From Europe or from far away? Was it a message from the future, that had been forgotten somewhere in the past? The instrumentation consisted of guitar, organ, saxophone, clarinet and violin, but also old-fashioned piano could be heard alongside an accordion, a xylophone or an electronic drum machine. The music was melancholic, sometimes sad, and yet it was refreshing, lively and made its listeners happy. A woman's voice came and went as if blown about by the wind, a singing child, melodies for eternity, and again and again little surprises as if with each piece one were unwrapping a small but precious present."
In the spring of 1977, two young Belgian musicians who called themselves Aksak Maboul (aka Marc Hollander & Vincent Kenis) set out to record an album in which they playfully fused and deconstructed all kinds of genres to create their own musical world. Many ingredients came in and out of the Aksak blender: fake jazz, electronics, imaginary African & Balkan music, minimalism (there were even pre-techno aspects such in as Saure Gurke and its characteristic keyboard stab pattern which will mysteriously find its way into many classic Detroit techno tracks some ten years later) and even improv in the best "Downtown" tradition! Onze Danses became a cult album... (oh yeah, the mystery solved: 'Aksak' is a Turkish word designating certain uneven rhythms, and 'Maboul' is French, borrowed from the Arabic, meaning 'mad' "Crazy Rhythms?") "A sum of musical and cultural references which knows no border between countries and civilizations... a spirit inherited from Dadaism and Surrealism." Hell! Talk about all over the map -you even hear moments that sound like Braxton's "Ghost Trance" compositions!
"100 Thumbs Up!" - morgue thief MannyLunch

AKSAK MABOUL - "Un peu de l'ame des bandits" (Crammed 002; Belgium) Marc Hollander and Vincent Kenis recorded this in 1980 with a lineup including Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, and Catherine Jauniaux. This displays the fundamental role of their music, which varies between complex structural mixes of bassoon and electronic drums, bells and Turkish melodies, instruments allsorts, tango and crypto punk! Not to be missed!!!

HONEYMOON KILLERS - Les Tueurs De La Lune De Miel (Crammed 103; Belgium) Fronted by the late Yvon Vromman, The Honeymoon Killers were a provocative band with a strong pop sensibility. They became the darlings of the music press all around Europe (including in the UK, a rare feat for a French-singing act), and their delirious live shows gained them a strong following. They were essentially formed by the combination of the group known as Les Tueurs De La Lune De Miel which also included vocalist Veronique Vincent, Gerald Fenerberg, Jeanf Jones Jacob, and Aksak Maboul's Marc Hollander & Vincent Kenis (much in the same way U Totem is the combination of Motor Totemist Guild and 5UU's). Never available on CD before, the album is completed by the 3 tracks from the "Subtitled Remixes" EP as well as by live recordings from 1981.
CD $19

SONOKO - La Debutante (Crammed 110; Belgium) Europe (and more specifically France) as seen by a young Japanese girl in the mid-Eighties... A study in inverted exoticism... Sonoko charmingly conjures up the spirit of Brigitte Bardot, Suicide, French cinema, Nino Rota, Robbe-Grillet, David Lynch, Catholic church music, Phil Spector, Shakespeare and more. Jean-Paul Gaultier has repeatedly been using songs from this cult album for his fashion shows. The album was produced by Colin Newman (Wire) and Aksak Maboul (Vincent Kenis & Marc Hollander).

SAINKHO NAMCHYLAK [NAMTCHYLAK] - Out Of Tuva (Crammed Craw 06; Belgium) This is Tuvan vocalist extraordinare Sainko Namchylak's debut disc on Sub Rosa from 1993. It was recorded between 1989 and 1993 in Kyzyl, Moscow, Wuppertal, Paris and Brussels and features a variety of musicians. It is a unique blend of diverse ethnic influences and pop sensibilities. If you've never had Sainko cast her spell on you, this is the perfect place to start. As time went on, she became an even stronger improvising vocalist collaborating with heavy characters like Evan Parker, Ned Rothenberg and Peter Kowald. Her controversial appearance at the Guelph Festival last year, when she was pulled from the stage by the promoter, both shocked, confused and angered the audience. "Out of Tuva" is her first treasure, so dig deep and enjoy. - BLG

SUSSAN DEYHIM [DEIHIM]/RICHARD HOROWITZ - Desert Equations: Azax Attra (Crammed 111; Belgium) Electro-Persian excursion by ethno-techno duo consisting of Iranian vocalist Sussan Deyhim and US electronic music composer Richard Horowitz. A groundbreaking album, dominated by Sussan Deyhim's sublime voice surging from behind virtual dunes and electronic oases, which prompted writer Paul Bowles to wonder: "Was this composed under the influence of Majoun ?"... and which convinced filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci to entrust most of the soundtrack music for his "Sheltering Sky" movie to Richard Horowitz. Since "Desert Equations", Sussan Deyhim has worked with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Bobby McFerrin, Adrian Sherwood and Ornette Coleman. She has collaborated with visual artist Shirin Neshat on several award-winning video installations, and has released the acclaimed "Madman Of God" (Crammed, 2000) an album based on classic Persian Sufi poetry who's alternative version w/additonal players was produced by Laswell as "Shy Angels". But this is the record that brought her to the light in the Western hemisphere, finally available again.
CD $19

SUSSAN DEYHIM [DEIHIM] - Madman Of God: Divine Songs Of The Persian Sufi Masters (Crammed Cramworld 22; Belgium) w/Glenn Velez, Reggie Workman, Will Calhoun, Karsh Kale, Reza Derekshani.
This is how extraordinary Iranian vocalist Sussan Deyhim describes her first solo album: "Madman Of God is a collection of classic melodies taken from the Persian repertoire, which were composed around the poetry of Rumi, Saadi, Djami and other Sufi writers from the 11th to the 19th centuries. These pieces are as well-known by my grandparents as they are by my own generation, and they represent the torch songs of classical Persian music"
The result is an inspired, exciting and deeply spiritual masterpiece. Deyhim and her sublime voice are surrounded by contributions from players as diverse as Iranian classical musician Reza Derakhshani, percussionist Glen Velez (a long-time collaborator of Steve Reich), veteran jazz bassist Reggie Workman (who has been heard alongside the likes of John Coltrane), percussionist Will Calhoun (who has drummed with Living Colour as well as with BB King) and others. Although practically all the sounds are performed by acoustic instruments and voices, Sussan Deyhim's innovative arrangement and production have shaped "Madman Of God" into a very modern soundscape
CD $19

SUSSAN DEYHIM [DEIHIM]/BILL LASWELL - "Shy Angels" (Crammed Cramworld 26; Belgium) This is Bill Laswell's reinterpretation of the entire 'Madman Of God' album, in which Sussan Deyhim presents her uniquely personal reading of divine love poems by Rumi, Saadi and other Persian Sufi masters. The reconstruction and mix translation of the Madman Of God album by Laswell, who has added himself (on bass) as well as Karsh Kale, Zakir Hussain, Hamid Drake, Abegasu Shiota, Aiyb Dieng and Abdou Mboup onto the original recordings alongside the players Glenn Velez, Reggie Workman, Will Calhoun, Karsh Kale, and Reza Derekshani.. Lovingly done, and a wonderful alternate experience of this Deyhim masterpiece!

FRED FRITH - The Top Of His Head (Crammed MTM 21; Belgium) A movie soundtrack done by Fred in '88-89, this has been unavailable for a long time - we're glad to have it back! Fred plays all the instruments (and machines/tapes/radios...) himself, save for Jean Derome on saxes and flutes, Anne Bourne on cello and accordion, and occasionally the voices of Jane Siberry and Christie MacFayden. Subtle, ominous and occasionally musical in the "normal" way, this is a wonderful hour spent with visuals....or in the dark.
CD $19

HAROLD BUDD & HECTOR ZAZOU - Glyph (Crammed MTM 37; Belgium) Modern chamber mood music with a pulse, rising out of ambience and electronics. This is not just a duet record, which would have been fine enough considering these two keyboard talents; there are a whole host of contributors including B J Cole on ethereal pedal steel, Mark Isham trumpet, and others on guitars, clarinets, and kanteles. Unforced electronic rhythms pervade...and the occasional dreamy vocal.
CD $19

DAVID CUNNINGHAM - "Water" (Crammed MTM 31; Belgium) Many of the sound sculptures found here were created by Cunningham (founder of the Flying Lizards as an "experiment") as commissions for visual accompaniment (soundtrack cues, etc). TARAF DE HAIDOUKS - Band Of Gypsies (Crammed Cramworld 24; Belgium)
Recorded in Bucharest during three special concerts and additional studio recordings in december 2000, "Band Of Gypsies" is the fourth album by Romanian band Taraf de Haidouks.
Always eager to expand the scope of their music, the "best Gypsy band in the world" (as recently described by UK daily The Independent) have decided to confront their styles to those of other Balkan countries by inviting Gypsy virtuoso musicians from Macedonia (the Kokani Orkestar brass band), Bulgaria (clarinet player Filip Simeonov) and Turkey (percussionist Tarik Tuysuzoglu) to join them on stage. The result is a series of exciting mixtures in which magical moments abound.
Along with these ambitious compositions one will rediscover with great pleasure the fantastic atmosphere of a Taraf de Haidouks live performance in a collection of previously-unrecorded pieces featuring the various singers and soloists in top form and particularly galvanized by the importance of the event. These were indeed the band's first ever concerts in the Romanian capital; after ten years of international success the Taraf were still not recognized in their own country (maybe because they were perceived as Gypsies rather than as musicians).
The event was documented in a film by young French/Gypsy director Elsa Gatlif (Tony Gatlif's daughter), which will be released soon.

TARAF DE HAIDOUKS - Dumbala Dumba (Crammed Cramworld 21; Belgium) Taraf de Haidouk's third album was recorded in their home environment of Clejani and in nearby Bucharest. Just like its predecessors, it was produced by Stefan Karo, Michel Winter and CramWorld producer/engineer Vincent Kenis. But this time the Taraf have invited a series of guests to appear with them: the musicians from Mirsa with their characteristic call-and-response vocal style, the ursari (who descend from the brotherhood of the bear-tamers), Rosioru, the master of Valachian Gypsy crooners, as well as Viorica, a remarkable female vocalist. Great performances by these musafirii (guests) and by the entire, regular line-up of the Taraf all contribute to make Dumbala Dumba a fresh, warm, intimate and poetic album...

KOCANI ORKESTAR - Alone At My Wedding (Crammed Cramworld 25; Belgium) With their new, expanded line-up, mighty Macedonian brass band KoKani Orkestar are wilder than ever, getting the entire audience up on their feet & dancing at every concert. Their music is still based on Gypsy tunes from various parts of the Balkans and on Turkish/Bulgarian rhythms, with a sprinkle of Latin flavour... but this album is particularly devoted to the repertoire played by Gypsy bands during wedding celebrations in Macedonia. This enables the KoKani Orkestar to transcend the strict boundaries of the brass band genre : half of the tracks showcase the vocal talents of their two new singers (charismatic, young Aljur Azizov and accordionist Zlate Nikolov), and there are several small ensemble pieces featuring instruments such as darbuka, banjo and clarinet. The band's popular trademark thundering style is present as ever, with its powerful rhythm section (drummer + four tubas) which rocks like a mutant Balkan funk band, and its wailing, passionate soloists (Ismail Saliev on sax, Turan Gaberov on trumpet and Deladin Demirov on clarinet).
CD $19

KOCANI ORKESTAR With NAAT VELIOV- L'Orient Est Rouge (Crammed Cramworld 19; Belgium) The material, which is very creatively arranged by band-leader Naat Veliov, comes from a variety of sources: traditional dance music from Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, elements of rumba and salsa, and even Indian film music. As for this album's title-track ("The Orient Is Red"), it is based on a famous Communist Chinese song which had apparently achieved pop hit status in Yugoslavia during the Tito era...Kocani Orkestar comes from the city of Kocani, in the new Republic Of Macedonia (ex-Yugoslavia). Performed by two trumpets, three tubas, saxophone, clarinet, zurla (traditional oboe) and percussion, their style of music is aptly described in their region as Romska Orientalna Musika - 'Rom' meaning 'Gypsy'. It is a potent mixture of powerful brass band sounds, Turkish/Bulgarian rhythms (including characteristic asymetrical time signatures such as 7/8, 9/8 etc., which are sometimes called 'Aksak' in traditional Turkish music), and Eastern-style solos which are at the same time very skillful, inspired and wild.

BLAINE L. REININGER / MIKEL ROUSE - Colorado Suite/A Walk In The Woods (Crammed MTM 3+6; Belgium) Blaine Reininger is one of the founding members of Tuxedomoon ; Mikel Rouse is a New York composer working in the tradition of minimal & systems music. This album was originally released as two separate records: "Colorado Suite", a fake soundtrack for a Western ("Phil Glass meets Bonanza ?") , and "A Walk In The Woods", a suite for chamber orchestra which was selected by the NY Times among the ten best albums of 85.

YASUAKI SHIMIZU - Music For Commercials (Crammed MTM 12; Belgium) Composer, arranger and renowned jazz saxophonist Shimizu (who has worked with Sakamoto, Bill Laswell, etc, and whose " Saxophonettes " record was remixed and re-released last year by The Orb ) has recorded this brilliant and inventive collection of short pieces, very pleasurable to listen to despite the fact that they were conceived for Japanese TV commercials, and bear sweet titles such as "Seiko", "Sharp", "Honda" etc...

TUXEDOMOON - Desire/No Tears (Crammed 102; Belgium) The most asked about album and the most asked about classic 'No Tears' EP together on 1 CD, from this group that fluctuates between a European 'Residents" feel and futurist chamber music, while being in that moment as a pop/punk/synth/ambient band.

TUXEDOMOON - Holy Wars (Crammed CramBoy 1020; Belgium) "Holy Wars": TM's most mature album also happens to be their best-seller, and is released all around the world. Recorded in 1985 while the band are at the peak of their popularity in Europe. Some of the most poignant and moving songs ("Some Guys", "In a Manner of Speaking", "Bonjour Tristesse", "Holy Wars"), and new instrumental colours: Blaine Reininger has left the band, and is replaced by Dutch trumpet and harmonica player Luc van Lieshout. Among other subjects, the lyrics are about wandering in the new European megapolis: Wim Wenders recognizes some of his own obsessions, and uses "Some Guys" in the opening scenes of "The Sky Above Berlin".
CD $19

TUXEDOMOON - Divine (Crammed CramBoy 1111; Belgium) "Divine": 82 is decidedly a very prolific year for TM, who also record this music which was commissioned by choreographer Maurice Bejart for his tribute to Greta Garbo.

TUXEDOMOON - Pinheads On The Move (Crammed CramBoy 5050; Belgium) "Pinheads on the Move": released in 88, this album contains rarities and curiosa from the period 77 to 83: previously unreleased tracks, deleted singles, live and demo recordings, radio jingles, and tracks which originally came out on the Ralph compilation "Subterranean Modern". Also contains an extensive biography of the band.
CD $19

TUXEDOMOON - Ship Of Fools (Crammed CramBoy 6060; Belgium) "Ship of Fools": during the year following the release of "Holy Wars" , Tuxedomoon tour around the world with a new show which incorporates more and more visual elements, under the direction of Bruce Geduldig (dance, film and slide projections), and elaborate lighting designed by Nina Shaw. The band record this mini-album which explores two diametrically aspects of their art: three hard and electric tracks, and a suite of introspective, rather acoustic pieces.
CD $19

TUXEDOMOON - You (Crammed CramBoy 9090; Belgium) "You": TM's last studio album, recorded in 87. Winston Tong has gone missing for two years, and has been replaced by young multi-instrumentist Ivan Georgiev. A strange, tortured album, which might retrospectively be seen as announcing the end of the band. Contains great moments: the epic "Never-ending Story", "You", "Boxman" (a series of short dialogues based on the writings of Japanese writer Abe Kobo), etc.

TUXEDOMOON - Suite En Sous-Sol/Time To Lose/Short Stories (Crammed CramBoy 8081; Belgium) "Suite en Sous-Sol" is based on the principle of the suite of dances from the baroque period, and was recorded in 82 with the participation of Moroccan musicians (on the Camus-inspired track "Stranger"). It originally came out in 82 on an Italian label as a double-12". This re-release also includes two excellent twelve-inchers from 82: "Time To Lose", and "Short Stories" ("The Cage/This Beast").

HECTOR ZAZOU - Geographies/13 Proverbes Africains (Crammed MTM 5; Belgium) 'Geographies' was the first of Hector Zazou's solo ventures, after the brilliant ZNR (Zazou 'n' Racaille) recordings for the Recommended label Mixing in influences from all across the stylistic spectrum, Zazou leavens the ingredients with an overriding sense of calm and even languor, his moody scores possessing a warm, humid quality. The pieces here are performed by what is essentially a chamber orchestra augmented by singers. There are tinges of a kind of neo-classical minimalism of the sort practiced by Wim Mertens, occasionally laced with a dab of British folk essence, as on "Vera C." There's a tension between this classical mode and the ambient feel Zazou was to go toward later in his career; essentially it's a like a soundtrack for an imaginary film. Only on "Au Bout du Monde" does Zazou allow himself to relax for an attractive Middle Eastern-flavored song. And the charming, quasi-orientalist "Des Cocotiers," with its innocent, childlike phrasing, gives an idea of the areas he would fully delineate in the future. A true classic and often stolen from: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"!
CD $19

HECTOR ZAZOU - Geologies (Crammed MTM 20; Belgium) In some ways a follow-up in concept to the Geographies album. But Hector played everything himself on that one; here he utilizes players of guitar, flutes, piano, saxophones, clarinet (Dirk Descheemaeker), trumpet, and a string quartet while keeping to just synth and computer himself. Like all his work, it's not released casually - it sets very high standards and keeps them!

NELS CLINE & THURSTON MOORE - Pillow Wand (Littlebrother 11) After many years of planning, Nels and Thurston's much-talked-about "dream guitars" project is finally here, the first studio collaboration between two of the most innovative guitarists working today. Most pieces feature quiet layered strumming and build slowly to their resolution. Recorded the same day they played live at Rhino Records (the results of which make up the 'In-Store' CD on the Father Yod label), Pillow Wand is the first studio collaboration between two of the most innovative guitarists around. Most pieces feature quiet layered strumming and build slowly to their resolution. Packaged in a fold-over jacket with inner sleeve (like a mini gatefold record). 67 minutes. Recorded 12/30/96 at New Zone Studio by Wayne Peet.

NELS CLINE TRIO - Chest (Littlebrother 06) Epic record that spans the emotions from menacing to tender to furiously aggro to other worldly. The first NCT record on little brother, Chest, is an epic record that spans the emotions from menacing to tender to furiously aggro to other worldly. The majority of the album was recorded almost three years before it was released, as Nels thought it too extreme for his label at the time, Enja. An absolute classic. Recorded 6/93 at Sage & Sound by Geoff Sykes (except Beardism/Call Crouch and Power Ballad for Woodward A recorded 7/11/95 at New Zone Studio by Wayne Peet). NELS CLINE TRIO - Sad (Littlebrother 12) Here it is at last, the long-awaited follow-up to Chest. Sad is the fourth Nels Cline Trio album, and perhaps the most diverse yet. The disc begins with a three-minute-long guitar drone, followed by a drum solo, then a quiet improv, and a blistering coda. And that's just the first track. "Fluff w/ Fork" and "Little Shaver" are the noisiest the Trio have ever been, while "Texas Telephone Pal" and "Thought Cloud" are perhaps the most abstract. Sad also features two of Nels' best and most fully realized compositions yet, "Arrows" and "Crest in Black". Five long compositions and five short tracks. Alternately beautiful, noisy, abstract and ferocious. Recorded 4/9 & 7/97 at New Zone Studio by Wayne Peet. Featuring the mighty Nels Cline: guitar, voice, Bob Mair: bass, guitar & Michael Preussner: drums & organ, w/ Noriko Peet: voice (track 3)

With Mark E Miller, David Moss, Anton Fier, Toni Nogueira, Steve Sacks, Claudio Silvia Reinaldo Fernandes, Jorge Silva, Duncan Lindsay. Despite its smooth rhythms and concessions to pop, Envy more or less picks up where DNA left off. Arto's guitar wanders in and out of noiseland, producing some ear-shattering effects, but mostly this begins his musical odyssey with the sounds of his youth -- that is, Brazilian music. In fact, Lindsay occasionally sings in Portuguese. A startling and very successful debut. ~ John Dougan, AMG

ORNETTE COLEMAN QUARTET - Ornette! (Atlantic 73714; UK) Hard to believe, but this is the CD debut of the 1961 free jazz classic. Each member of this dynamic group was a visionary on his instrument: Ornette Coleman on alto sax, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Ed Blackwell on drums, and Scott LaFaro on bass. Seemingly outrageous at the time of their release, these recordings remain some of the most enduring in the jazz canon. Includes new liner notes and the bonus track "Proofreaders."

IVOR CUTLER - Dandruff (Virgin; UK) 1974 album from One of the most unique figures on the pop music fringe, Ivor Cutler is a musician, singer, songwriter, poet, actor, painter, author of books for children, and humorist. His droll, often surreal, sometimes melancholy humor permeates all of his work. His singing voice, a mordant baritone with perhaps the thickest Scottish burr ever captured on tape, is as singular as his idiosyncratic worldview. This features 45 tracks.

FAUST - Faust IV (Virgin) 1992 CD issue of what was the fourth and final album to be released during Faust's original lifespan, released by Virgin Records in 1973. Opens with one of their most relentlessly mantric tracks, "Krautrock", a searing post-VU drone, and then delves into what is some of the most accessible Faust material ("The Sad Skinhead", "Jennifer", etc. Less revolutionary than its predecessors (Faust, So Far, Tapes), but still contains many memorable moments.

JIMMY GIUFFRE 3 With JIM HALL/BOB BROOKMEYER - Western Suite (Atlantic; EEC) In late 1957, jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, and iconoclast Jimmy Giuffre broke up the original Jimmy Giuffre 3 with Ralph Pena and Jim Hall. In early 1958, for a recording session, he formed a new trio without a rhythm section. For the album Trav'lin' Light, his new trio included Hall on guitar and the underrated trombone giant Bob Brookmeyer. This is as solid as any of the earlier or later Jimmy Giuffre 3 records, and two notches above Trav'lin' Light in that it reveals a fully developed sense of the responsibilities, possibilities, and freedoms of reinventing jazz for the trio. - Thom Jurek, AMG

IAN McDONALD & MICHAEL GILES - McDonald & Giles (Virgin 2963; UK) [This 2002 UK edition remastering is the 1st time the CD has been available outside Japan; it also includes an expanded book of remembrances and pictures]
Multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald and drummer Michael Giles first teamed in early 1969 as founding members of the pioneering British art rock band King Crimson. However, after appearing on their landmark debut In the Court of the Crimson King, the duo -- dissatisfied with the group's musical direction and the strain of touring -- left the lineup, reuniting a few months later to record an LP of their own.
Following the meltdown of the original King Crimson lineup, Ian McDonald and Michael Giles brought brother Peter Giles back, which helps to account, in some ways, for the resemblance of this album to the 1968 Giles, Giles & Fripp recordings -- but the album continued where their work in King Crimson left off and featured a guest appearances by Steve Winwood and Michael Blakesley, combining prog rock's traits of length and multiple sections with some of the lighter feel of the GG&F days. The main attraction is really the performances turned in by McDonald and the Giles brothers -- they all sound fabulous, even when waffling musically, while Michael Giles has a unique drum tone that never has been duplicated (Giles himself abandoned the sound for his later career in Jackson Heights and as a session drummer). Peter Giles returned to the accounting trade, alas, while saxist/flautist Ian McDonald eventually wound up a founding member of Foreigner, which is another tale entirely [he'd always wanted to be a guitar slinger, it seems]

PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED [PIL] - First Issue [aka Public Image] (Virgin 87475; UK) UK-only issue of the legendary debut Public Image album, originally released by Virgin in 1978. Never issued in the US. John Lydon, Jah Wobble, Keith Levene, Jim Walker, at their 2nd best (1979's Second Edition was their unequivocal masterpiece). "One of the simplest notion in all of rock'n'roll -- repetition -- is what carries this highly combustive LP, fused together brightly with only the extremest elements of Krautrock, dub, and punk all in a 'Space Ritual' type racket. Recorded in September and issued December, 1978, the album was so repetitious and even more in your face than the Sex Pistols, journalists wrote this and subsequent P.I.L. albums off as 'anti-art', in a futile and utterly misread attempt to explain a sound so downright abrasive and previously unheard -- read as: unremembered. It was in no way, shape or form a prank, but for 1978, it was totally alien in its extremity, fuelled by the precise anger of Lydon's voice that manage to push the whole album at Mach whatever speed through innumerable red lights --about as much as the rhythm section, graced by the never-ending poise of Jah Wobble's bottomless dub bass and drummer Jim Walker's drum hits that resound like repeated gunshots in the dub-contained, airtight studio." Tracklisting: 'Theme', 'Religion 1', 'Religion 11', 'Annalisa', 'Public Image', 'Low Life', 'Attack', 'Fodderstompf'.

PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED [PIL] - Compact Disc [a/k/a 'Album' or 'Cassette'] (Virgin; UK) Of all the albums Bill Laswell was asked to produce for 'mainstream' acts in the wake of his multi-platinum success writing, producing and playing on the Rockit album for Herbie Hancock, this was possibly the most spectacular triumph. Assembling an amazing back-up band for Johnny "Rotten" Lydon of Tony Williams, Steve Vai, Ginger Baker, Malachi Favors, Nicky Skopelitis, Jonas Hellborg, Bernie Worrell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, L Shankar, and himself on bass [all of which was carefully kept from the public and indeed on this CD edition so as to not negatively bias the core audience!], this sounds like a rocket taking off for all of its almost 40 minutes! Hot guitars and 4/4 time signatures make this sound more like a hard-rock album than anything Lydon's done since The Sex Pistols. And the hit single "Rise" is actually a catchy number, believe it or not.
CD for $15 7 for 6 SALE

PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED [PIL] - Second Edition [a/k/a Metal Box] (Virgin; UK) The album that established Jah Wobble as a low-end bass supremo! PIL managed to avoid boundaries for the first four years of their existence, and Metal Box, their 2nd album, known here as "second Edition" without the lavish metal packaging, is undoubtedly the apex. It's a hallmark of uncompromising, challenging post-punk, hardly sounding like anything of the past, present, or future. Sure, there were touchstones that got their imaginations running -- the bizarreness of Captain Beefheart, the open and rhythmic spaces of Can, and the dense pulses of Lee Perry's productions fueled their creative fires -- but what they achieved with their second record is a completely unique hour of avant-garde noise. Originally packaged in a film canister as a trio of 12" records played at 45 rpm, the bass and treble are pegged at 11 throughout, with nary a tinge of midrange to be found. It's all scrapes and throbs (dubscrapes?), supplanted by John Lydon's caterwauling about such subjects as his dying mother, resentment, and murder. Guitarist Keith Levene splatters silvery, violent, percussive shards of metallic scrapes onto the canvas, much like a one-armed Jackson Pollock. Jah Wobble and Richard Dudanski lay down a molasses-thick rhythmic foundation throughout that's just as funky as Can's Czukay/Leibezeit and Chic's Edwards/Rodgers. It's alien dance music. Metal Box might not be recognized as a groundbreaking record with the same reverence as Never Mind the Bollocks, and you certainly can't trace numerous waves of bands who wouldn't have existed without it like the Sex Pistols record. But like a virus, its tones have sent miasmic reverberations through a much broader scope of artists and genres.
This U.K. reissue of Second Edition on CD boasts much better sound quality than the U.S. edition ~ Andy Kellman, AMG

THESE THREE McLAUGHLIN GEMS HAVE NOT BEEN AVAILABLE IN THE U.S. FOR SEVERAL YEARS...

SHAKTI With JOHN McLAUGHLIN - Shakti (Columbia; EEC) For his next act, the decibel champion of electric jazz shocked the world by unplugging and returning to South Indian music before an excitable audience at South Hampton College. Yet the alert McLaughlin follower will note that beyond the reliance upon South Indian instruments and scales, there are unbroken links to records like My Goal's Beyond and the high-speed electric music that McLaughlin was casting aside for now. McLaughlin called his new quintet Shakti, which means "creative intelligence and beauty and power" and the music here has all of that and something else, a ferocious streak inherited from the Mahavishnu days. McLaughlin ignites "Joy" by playing at a blazing speed, his cohorts L. Shankar (violin), R. Raghavan and T.S. Vinayakaram (mridangam), and Zakir Hussain (tabla) keeping up with the furious unison tempos with great dexterity and discipline, while a reworking of "Lotus Feet" forms a meditative interlude. Side two is taken up by a single lengthy raga-like track in which McLaughlin combines his rapid-fire Western manner with note-bending techniques clearly emulating a sitar, and the Indians get plenty of dueling room. In its way, this fire-eating acoustic music is just as energizing as the most electrified Mahavishnu flights. ~ Richard S. Ginell, AMG
CD $15.00 7 for 6 SALE.

SHAKTI With JOHN McLAUGHLIN - A Handful Of Beauty (Columbia; EEC) Shakti headed for the safer confines of a London recording studio on its second album, minus R. Raghavan and minus some of the volatile energy that they generated on their debut record. They were, however, a more integrated, more subtle ensemble now, exploring quieter, more lyrical corners of their East-West fusion, with L. Shankar's spectacular violin and Zakir Hussain's tabla taking the solo foreground as much as, if not more than, McLaughlin's acoustic guitar. With the exception of an arrangement of a traditional South Indian piece "Kriti," McLaughlin and Shankar contribute all of the compositions, which lean even more heavily toward South Indian music with reminders of McLaughlin's Western roots. As a whole, this is less accessible to McLaughlin's jazz-rock flock than the first Shakti album, but still fascinating for contemporary listeners with a yen for world music, as well as curious stragglers from the classical Indian world dominated by Ravi Shankar (another indefatigable champion of East-West fusions). ~ Richard S. Ginell, AMG
CD for $15 7 for 6 SALE

SHAKTI With JOHN McLAUGHLIN - Natural Elements (Columbia; EEC) The third and final Shakti recording from the 70s. The songs here are shorter than those on Shakti and Handful of Beauty, but no less impressive. The novelty of combining Eastern and Western musical styles had worn off and McLaughlin sounds comfortable. This allows for memorable compositions and interchanges, rather than the blistering virtuosity that characterized the first two releases. From the intense ("Daffodil And The Eagle") to the joyful ("Happiness Is Being Together"), Natural Elements stands as a milestone in McLaughlin's illustrious career. ~ Robert Taylor, AMG

SLAPP HAPPY/ & With HENRY COW [DAGMAR KRAUSE/PETER BLEGVAD/ANTHONY MOORE/ & With FRED FRITH/TIM HODGKINSON/JOHN GREAVES/CHRIS CUTLER/LINDSAY COOPER] - Casablanca Moon/Desperate Straights (Virgin; UK) 2nd ['73] and 3rd ['74] albums, by this group comprised of Dagmar Krause, Peter Blegvad and Anthony Moore, on 1 CD. Virgin rejected the original recording of this and forced them unhappily to re-record a "cleaner" version before the release (the original version was put out years later as Acnalbasac Noom on the Recommended label). But y'now, when Dagmar is singing, it suspends my critical faculties, regardless of the version! Desperate Straights was recorded by the union of Slapp Happy with Henry Cow (Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Tim Hodgkinson, Lindsay Cooper) as was most of what became the Cow's 4th album, In Praise Of Learning (if you count this as the 3rd). Essential marriage of the two originators of all RIO bands to follow!

SOFT MACHINE [MIKE RATLEDGE/ROBERT WYATT/HUGH HOPPER/ELTON DEAN/LYN DOBSON/NICK EVANS/MARC CHARIG] - Third [3/Three] (Columbia 471407; UK) Considered by many to be their finest moment in their almost decade long ever-evolving journey as the ultimate Canterbury band and jazz/rock/experimental pioneers - this was a massive two album set with four side-long epics. The Softs trio of Mike Ratledge (fuzz organ & electric piano), Hugh Hopper (el. fuzz bass) and Robert Wyatt (drums and final vocals for SM) added Elton Dean (alto sax & saxello) to their line-up plus other horns players from the Keith Tippett Group. Terry Riley's tape-loop experiments are utilized to the fullest here and 31 years later, this still continues to blow minds. The domestic version of this cd has extremely muddy/muffled sound and should be avoided. This British import sounds much better, although clean import vinyl is certainly the best way to experience this masterwork.

DAVID SYLVIAN & ROBERT FRIPP - The First Day (Virgin; UK) Robert Fripp and David Sylvian's first official release together, The First Day, is a much funkier and more percussive affair than its bootleg predecessor with the same title (which contained radically different versions of these songs being a pre-album tour as a trio with Trey Gunn - and no drummer). An obvious reason for its higher quality is that it was recorded in a studio, while the bootleg consisted of in-concert drumless versions -this album adds Jerry Marotta on drums - and the songs have been worked to completion. Fripp has found an extremely talented singer/partner in Sylvian, who adds a lot to his quirky compositions. Trey Gunn (who plays a bass-like instrument called the stick) makes each track practically groove and breathe on his own, and allows Fripp to stretch out and experiment in ways previously unheard by this guitar icon. The First Day is a very consistent album, with the musician's excitement and energy easily being felt on such tracks as "God's Monkey," "Brightness," and the ten-minute tour de force "Firepower." Other lengthy tracks follow (the 11-minute "20th Century Dreaming" and the 17-minute "Darshan"), but it never becomes self-indulgent or boring. Certainly one of Robert Fripp's best and more inspired King Crimson side projects. ~ Greg Prato, AMG

SCOTT WALKER - Scott [1] (Fontana 879; UK) Digital 24Bit High Definition/remastered editions with restored original sleeve artwork, superceding the prior reissues from 1992; at an attractive midline price to boot. If your not familiar with the genius of Scott, now the time is ripe to act decisively. On this debut solo album from 1967 we still find him constrained by the Wagnerian pop anthems that made the Walker Bros. a household name (in Europe anyway), but already we see Scott exhibiting his unique approach to making records that are an amalgam of stunning orchestral arrangements, controversial subject matter, and a booming athletic vocal style. SCOTT WALKER - Scott 2 (Fontana 880; UK) 2000 24 bit HDCD rmstr. Second solo album, originally released in 1968. Second solo album, originally released in 1968. "Scott's sophomore release followed hot on the heels of his first LP, and it's amazing to listen to the progress he had made as a singer, songwriter and interpreter in such a short span of time, as if he had ideas brewing about the direction he wanted his music to take even as he was still a member of the Walker Brothers. Once again he chose to do three Jacques Brel tracks; the excellent 'Jackie' ( a huge hit and probably the reason this LP actually reached #1, the last of his records that would), 'The Girls and the Dogs', and the near-psychotic 'Next', (a completely surreal tale of a GI that has his first sexual encounter in a mobile army whorehouse, contacts a venereal disease, and is so traumatized by the entire experience that he can never have a normal relationship with a woman again). And that's just one track. So in addition to the superb arrangements and orchestrations of Scott's cronies Peter Knight, Wally Stott and Reg Guest, we encounter what had by this point become the standard themes of Scott's work: alienation, prostitution, gonorrhea, warfare, the suburban nightmare and death, just to name a few. And That Voice." -- Billy Kiely CD for $15 7 for 6 SALE

SCOTT WALKER - Scott 3 (Fontana 881; UK) Third album, originally released in 1969. "Scott 3 is regarded by a good number of his fans as THE record, as it is so quintessentially Scott. The by now obligatory 3 Jacques Brel tunes are present, but at this point tacked onto the end of the record, as if they were an afterthought. Scott's writing had progressed so significantly that the truly memorable tunes present here are his alone. This is Scott at his most over the top, most Baroque, and it's definitely a record that reveals a new layer, a new subtlety, every time one hears it. Yes, it's very, very good." - Billy Kiely

SCOTT WALKER - Scott 4 (Fontana 882; UK) Fourth album, originally released in 1969. "Scott 4is probably his masterpiece, a record that should be elevated beyond it's cult status, like Bryter Later or Pet Sounds have been over the last decade or so. Supposedly Scott felt after completing 3 that the arrangements and song structures had become too labored, almost too difficult to endure at points. So, although the lush orchestration is still present, the tunes have been stripped of a lot of their excess ornamentation, and he adopted a more impressionistic approach. But it's the singer and the songs that really shine, and almost every track packs an emotional punch that rarely exists in the world of pop." - Billy Kiely CD for $15 7 for 6 SALE

SCOTT WALKER - Boy Child: 67-70 (Fontana 705; UK) 2000 24 bit HDCD rmstr. Includes tracks from '1', '2', '3', '4', and 3 cuts from ''Til The Band Comes In', as well as the b-side-only cut "The Plague" "Awesome 'greatest hits' collection, part of Fontana's Scott reissue program, spruced up with a lyric sheet and 24 bit HBCD remastered sound from the original half inch masters. Perfect for anyone who is wary of jumping in with one of the full lengths, but - once you hear this you'll want them all. Includes tracks from Scott's first five studio albums, and the track selection is top notch, even considering the fact that withthe idiosyncratic output of this guy, every fan is going to have a different idea about which tracks are of the 'must hear' variety."

SCOTT WALKER - Sings Jacques Brel (Fontana; EEC) Marc Almond once noted that Scott Walker could sing "Three Blind Mice" and "make it sound like the only song in the world." While it's true that Walker transformed the most prosaic numbers into unique, dramatic experiences, that's not to say he chose material at random or simply allowed his magical voice to work inevitable wonders without having to try. Walker selected his cover material carefully and crafted masterful, knowing renditions. He achieved that rare balance that distinguishes the best interpreters of others' works -- preserving the essence of the original while making the song entirely his own. Nowhere is this clearer than on the nine Jacques Brel compositions that appeared on Walker's first three solo albums. All of those tracks are featured here. It's logical that Walker gravitated to Brel; the Belgian was a singer/songwriter after Walker's own heart who told psychologically incisive stories of unremarkable lives, raising the banal to the level of high drama -- or at least high camp. Like Brel, Walker brought a measure of romanticism to the mundane and set his poetic lyrics within arrangements that fleshed out the emotional range of his human comedies, much like miniature soundtracks. Working with Mort Shuman's accomplished translations (and one more schmaltzy version by Rod McKuen), Walker captures the spirit and the many moods of Brel's originals, from quiet pathos ("If You Go Away") to dark humor ("Funeral Tango") to exuberant cynicism ("Jackie") to unbridled euphoria ("Mathilde"), in the process infusing the songs with his own personality. Each of the nine tracks is a gem, but three stand out: the grandiose, swirling waltz of "Amsterdam"; the darkly powerful "My Death"; and the sardonic, angst-ridden "Next." Although these cover versions are perhaps best appreciated alongside Walker's own compositions on his original albums, they remain among the most compelling renderings of Brel's work in the English language. ~ Wilson Neate, AMG

SCOTT WALKER - Climate Of The Hunter (Virgin; EEC) With Evan Parker, Ray Russell, Mark Isham, Mo Foster, Peter Van Hooke, Mark Knopfler, Phil Palmer. Like so many in my country [U.S.], I was late to catch on to Scott Walker, in my case when I first heard his first solo album in about 1976 by which time it was a cool period piece. But from that point forward I kept my eye out for Walker's scarce vinyl, picking it up whenever I crossed paths with one of his records.
I first heard Climate of Hunter in about 1986; it was already three years old. There were still those same incredible vocal pipes but wow the music had really moved! I was frankly unable to absorb this album at first though I gave it many tries. I suspected that the fault was entirely my own and not Scott Walker's. By the time this record reached about ten years of age I could understand it. The very best of other recording artists had begun to catch on to Walker's musical ideas presented here [like David Bowie et al]. And now Climate of Hunter just sounds like the most beautiful visionary piece of modern music imaginable. Think of a much more musically substantial "Avalon," and you will have some idea of what Climate of Hunter sounds like. But it is much less sweet, much more intriguing, with much more to offer on repeated listenings. When you have put away all of your old pop records as childish playthings Climate of Hunter will remain on your shelf (or in your hard drive) as a permanent fixture in the music that you take with you to the end of your life. I'm not kidding. Being the middlebrow type that I am, I am still currently struggling with the musical challenges presented by Walker's newer (but now fairly old) album "Tilt." - Randall E Adams, Amazon

YES - Fragile (Elektra/Rhino; EEC) [This 2003 reissue on Elektra/Rhino has considerably upgraded sound, a recreation of the original LP's booklet (with new annotation, going over the breakthrough that the album represented not just for Yes but for British rock and art-rock in general), and two bonus cuts, "America" (which also appears on the DVD-Audio edition of the disc) and the "early rough mix" of "Roundabout", which is unique to this release and reveals a lot about the group's (and producer Eddie Offord's) perfectionism].
The band's breakthrough album, dominated by science-fiction and fantasy elements and new member Rick Wakeman, whose organ, synthesizers, Mellotrons, and other keyboard exotica added a larger-than-life element to the procedings. Ironically, the album was a patchwork job, hastily assembled in order to cover the cost of Wakeman's array of instruments. But the group built effectively on the groundwork left by The Yes Album, and the group had an AM-radio sucker-punch, aimed at all of those other progressive bands who eschewed the notion of hit singles, in the form of "Roundabout," the edited version (sort of "highlights" of the album version) of which pulled in millions of young kids who'd never heard them before. The single clicked, most album-buyers liked the long version and all of the rest of what they found, and the band was made. ~ Bruce Eder, AMG
