DEREK BAILEY - Playing For Friends On 5th Street: Live at Downtown Music Gallery [DVD] (Straw2Gold 02) 51 minutes/NTSC. Dedicated to Irving & Stephanie Stone. Produced by Robert O'Haire. This monumental in-store performance was one of the true highlights of 11 years that DMG survived and prospered at 211 East 5th St., our old location, just a few blocks away from where we are now. We've done over 400 in-store sets, since we opened in May of '91, but this one was very special. When Derek Bailey told me that he would like to a solo set at DMG, I was honored and amazed. He had just gotten a new acoustic guitar, the guitar of his dreams and wanted to try it out in front of some friends. He recorded his Tzadik 'Ballads' CD that very same week. Advertising was done just cryptically and mainly word of mouth, our old store couldn't fit more than 50 or 60 people at once. Derek was immensely charming, both playing that lovely new acoustic guitar in his own phenomenal and unique way and even told a couple of short tales for everyone's amusement. Our good friend and longtime Chadbourne documenter, Robert O'Haire, has done a fabulous job of capturing this intimate set just right. This is just the beginning for Robert's new DVD label, future releases include DVDs from Cecil Taylor, Dr. Chadbourne & even more. Within the next few months, we would also host a few other important solo & duo sets at the old store - Peter Kowald, Joelle Leandre & John Zorn/Louie Belogenis.
(Never thought I'd see my own smiling face (bottom left) on the cover of a DVD! )
DVD for $19

JOE McPHEE/TRIO X - Sugar Hill Suite (CIMP 320) Featuring Joe McPhee on saxes & trumpet, Dominic Duval on contrabass and Jay Rosen on drums. Sixth fabulous release from our favorite CIMP/Cadence all-star trio, continuing to blow minds with each and every gig and release. Serious review in 1-2 weeks, however no doubt they knock us all out once new.
CD for $14

THE NECKS - Mosquito/See Through [2 CD set] (ReR Necks4/5; UK) Superb, minimal, luscious, spacious, free-flowing, meditative, piano/bass/drums trio that sounds like no-one else. Just got a dozen in and they sold immediately, so please be patient, back next week.
CD for $20 in stock next week

KEVIN AYERS - Alive In California (Box O Plenty) This tiny label release documents Kevin's shows in California in 1993, 1998 and 2000. The sound ranges from decent (2 tracks) to very good (all the others) and most tracks include a full band, which is interesting to hear, as he has tended to go solo in the last decade or more. I don't know that Kevin and the band rehearsed a ton together, but it's obvious that they know the tunes and play them with a lot of verve if somewhat loosely. Not one of his essential releases, but a surprisingly good live 'greatest hits' kinda thing that fans will definitely enjoy. [Box O Plenty]

FISHBONE - Critical Times: Fisbone's Hen House Sessions [DVD] (MVD 4408; USA) In 2001, the legendary, influential and voraciously eclectic band Fishbone arrived to record their newest material at the Hen House, a free community recording studio - fully wired for digital sound and video.
The music these folks craft is nothing short of stunning. I mean stunning in the kinda way that you start to question all those music magazines and stuff you got lying about the place, since these folks have been going for next-to forever, and you never once saw their picture in the NME. And because the music is so stunning, what happens is that you start to get interested in all the yacking about time-changes and so on. It helps, too, that these folks are some endearingly daft motherfuckers. What we get, are the recording sessions that result in the creation of half-a-dozen utterly brilliant pieces of punk-funk-soul-reggae-metal glory. It came as no surprise to learn that one of these fellas used to play guitar in Bad Brains, since that's pretty much the typea thing we're dealing with. It's a hybrid of reggae and punk, just like those fellas who got Banned In DC way back when, but it also adds in a bit of Hip-Hop, plenty of soul, and, in the case of Demon In Here, even some spooky-as-all-hell Nick Cave-esque Hellfire Preaching." THE DUKE, Mondo Irlando Tracks Include: 1. Frayed F*cking Nerve Ending 2. Last Dayz 3. Critical Times 4. Premadawnutt 5. Demon in Here 6. "Skank N' Go Nutts" (Alt. Cut)

THE 'BLG' REVIEW OF...

GEORGE CRUMB/MARGARET LENG TAN - Makrokosmos I & II [DVD] (mode 152) 2 hours, 20 minutes / filmed by Evans Chan. Margaret Leng Tan is one of a kind. She is one of the few virtuosos of extended technique piano explorations; a true pioneer who has worked closely with John Cage, Somei Satoh, Stephen Montague and more recently George Crumb. She is also committed to performing (and collecting) on toy pianos, and getting composers to write for this odd and often overlooked instrument. We've been friends ever since I taped an amazing performance of a Stephen Montague piano piece at New Music America in Montreal in 1990 and she found out and asked for a copy. I was proud to see a full page article in the New York Times last month about Margaret and George Crumb discussing this marvelous work when it was performed at Zankel Hall, underneath Carnegie Hall.
"Makrokosmos I & II" were written for amplified piano and are comprised of 24 fantasy pieces based on the signs of the Zodiac. Margaret performs both on the piano keyboard as well as inside the piano, plucking strings and manipulating a small chain inside the piano. This work is immensely haunting, serious and intense, yet filled with suspense and space. Margaret appears totally committed, making each note count. There are some unexpected moments of vocal exclamations that really surprised me. Mr. Chans has done a splendid job of capturing this mysterious music just right, concentrating on Margaret's hands, face and body only moving or changing angles that show the action as it happens, just adding a minimum of effects to enhance those moments that could use a sprinkle of visual spice. When Ms. Tan plays inside the piano on "Music of Shadows", it is similar to a magical zither that might weave through our dreams. Each of the 24 pieces is relatively short (mostly under 3 minutes) and each tells a little story, evoking a different spirit and exploring a variety of sounds that only a master composer and performer could coax from an acoustic (amplified) piano. Besides this wonderful work, this DVD also features a fascinating 45-minute interview with George Crumb, Margaret Leng Tan and publisher, Don Gillespie. What more could we ask for? We have recently restocked all in-print titles featuring Ms. Leng Tan on labels New Albion and Mode. I heartily recommended each one, check our website the that list.
DVD for $22 (also available on CD for $15)

SEVERAL 'HARD-TO-GET' & MOST LIKELY 'LAST COPIES WE'LL EVER SEE' ITEMS.

..FIRST TWO SIGNED LIMITED EDITIONS...

ANNETTE PEACOCK - Abstract Contact [signed edition] (Ironic 05; UK) Annette's very last copies of this CD have been autographed by her, and are being sold to raise money to self-manufacture her new album, due out early in 2005 [she already has the masters done for pressing at this time!].
"There might be more than a bit of avant-garde diva to Ms. Peacock's persona, but she pulls it off better than most. This tough-to-find LP/CD from 1988 on the small Ironic label showcases her songwriting, singing/speaking, and sociopolitical/radical feminist lyrics in the pared-down context of a funky trio. Peacock plays various keyboards, acoustic and electric, in an off-kilter and free manner, offsetting the intensely grooving bass and drum work of Ed Poole and Simon Price. The lengthy showpiece "Elect Yourself" finds the rhythm team laying down an unstoppable riff as Peacock declaims on top, covering all sorts of topics from sex to government to religion, sometimes singing, other times speaking, always with a sardonic decisiveness and underlying fury. The lyrical content alone would make this recording stand out from the myriad, pallid attempts at "meaningfulness" coming out of the alternative rock scene at the time, but Peacock's writing ability, a quality long recognized in a portion of the jazz world, gives the songs a power and creativity rarely encountered elsewhere. Long before the Divinyls' "controversial" hit "I Touch Myself," listeners find Peacock's infinitely more incisive and to the point "Happy With My Hand," with lines like "And if there's no penetration/You got to use imagination." Lyrics aside, however, it's a joy to hear her unique voice, both singing and writing. Listeners who became familiar with her work through the ECM release An Acrobat's Heart might be surprised to hear this rougher edge. Highly recommended if you can find it." - Brian Olewnick, All Music Guide
"OUT OF THE MORE THAN 50,000 albums I've owned during my lifetime, this is one of my TOP TEN [which admittedly has about 50 records on it if you were to force me to put them all down on paper at gunpoint] Still, if you're only going to own 10 records, this will be welcome by you as one of them!! The THUMBS of all functioning ears and open minds on the planet are UP!!!" - Mannylunch

...AND TWO OUT-OF-PRINT JON HASSELL TITLES!!

JON HASSELL - The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things by the Power of Sound (Intuition 746880; Germany)(With J A Deane, Richard Horowitz, Jean-Philippe Rykiel, Michael Brook; live recordings assembled and processed by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno) "Raga" trumpeter Jon Hassell's The Surgeon of the Nightsky Restores Dead Things by the Power of Sound utilizes the core ensemble of players previously heard on 'Power Spot', but with quite different results. Surgeon of the Nightsky is considerably more ambient and less rhythmically animated than its predecessor. Each of the five tracks is named after a city, a theme Hassell would further explore in the subsequent City: Works of Fiction. The tracks of Surgeon of the Nightsky melt seamlessly into one another, forming an unbroken arc that spans the entire album. Hassell's patient, breathy vocalisms bring the album to a quiet closing. Steeped in an ethereal cool, Surgeon of the Nightsky reflects Hassell's unique brand of minimalism. -- Mark Kirschenmann , AMG

JON HASSELL/FARAFINA - Flash of the Spirit (Intuition 73009; Germany) (Jon Hassell and Farafina with J A Deane, Mahama Konate and Daniel Schwartz; produced by Hassell, Daniel Lanois , and Brian Eno)
"After creating several works of 'created/imaginary' world fusion (Fourth World is a real standout), Jon Hassell decided to go for the real thing and teamed up with a well-known percussion group from Burkina Faso, Farafina. He took great pains to insure that the group completely retained its characteristic sound--that all elements of the ensemble were heard clearly. Farafina is, in fact, both percussion and vocals, and the blend of these with Hassell's characteristic "mutant trumpet" and electronics is inspiring.
Brian Eno did much of the mixing here and was completely in tune with Hassell's approach. J.A. Deane, another frequent collaborator with Hassell, is also on hand to lend some of his unique trombone electronics. But the overall feel of the music is strongly African, skillfully melded with studio technology.
The album was made in 1988, and while it is not one of the earliest world fusion works, it is, in retrospect, one of the best. These days it is all too common, when creating an album of worldbeat music, not only to try mixing everything--including the kitchen sink--into one track, but also to bridge the gap between commercial and "ethnic" music. Unfortunately, in most cases, the emphasis is heavily on the commercial side, with the result that the music sounds like a really thin, watery version of what could have been something great. This one is something great!"- L Greenburg, Amazon

LUCIANO BERIO/BRUNO MADERNA - Berio/Maderna (BVhaast 9109/Acousmatrix 7; Netherlands) In 1955 Luciano Berio and Bruno Maderna founded a Studio di Fonologia at a Milan radio station; it was the first electronic music studio in Italy. Berio became very active there, organizing concerts and also publishing a new music journal, both under the name Incontri musicali. Berio explored the frontiers of sound, particularly vocal sound, thanks to his association with Cathy Berberian. She was willing and able to produce a remarkable variety of extended techniques with her voice, which she did with the utmost musicianship. Three pieces: Momenti, Thema-Omaggio a Joyce, Visage. Bruno Maderna's celebrity in America was so short-lived that by 2004 Maderna's name was largely forgotten there, but not so in Europe, where he is yet regarded as one of the giants of postwar modernism. Two pieces: Le Rire, Invenzione su una voce featuring Cathy Berberian

LUC FERRARI - Petite Symphony Intuitive pour un Paysage de Printemps, Strathoven, Presque Rien avec Filles, Hetereozygote (BVhaast 9009/Acousmatrix 3; Netherlands) A lovely work of electro-acoustic music by one of the French pioneers of musique concrete, "Petite Symphonie Intuitive Pour un Paysage de Printemps" ("Little Intuitive Symphony for a Spring Landscape") recreates the composer's experiences during a climb toward sunset on the Causse Majean, a high plateau in the Massif Central, including his recollection of a shepherd's flute and its reverberations across the landscape. The flute sounds and multiple echoes continue in changing musical modes throughout the piece (the tonic redefined by electronic drones), blending together with sounds of the countryside and conversational fragments from the human presence to create a beautiful sonic landscape of 25 minutes duration. "Heterozygote" is a musique concrete composition realized on tape; it combines fragments of conversations and other sounds and noises from nature and daily life in an organized and poetic manner (although not plot-oriented). Bits of human speech in several languages are used both for their charm of meaning and their musical qualities of inflection and pitch. At one moment several people express how much they enjoyed having visited some unnamed place. At another moment a mysterious transformed voice chants "dans un reve" (in a dream), but the accompanying sounds are more like the real creaks and crashes of a house in a windy storm, with intermittent disturbed cries from the sleeper. For the first time in a musique concrete work, the sounds are modulated and transformed but retain their natural character; the result is not abstract, but rather moves about the world with the ease of a thought or a dream. In the Presque Rien (Almost Nothing) series of musique concrete pieces, Ferrari further developed this technique and sensibility with sounds and their interconnections that are almost unidentifiable, while nevertheless retaining a feeling of naturalness. -Blue Gene Tyranny, AMG

GOTTFRIED MICHAEL KOENIG - The Electronic Works [2 CD set] (BVhaast 9001-2/Acousmatrix 1-2; Netherlands) Studio fur Elektronische Musik des Westdeutschen Rundfunks, Instituut voor Sonologie, Utrecht. Composing and generating sound via computer technology as early as the mid-'60s, Gottfried Michael Koenig was a pivotal force in cementing the emerging relationship between music and electronics. Born in Magdeburg, Germany in 1926, Koenig studied composition at the Detmold School of Music before relocating to Bonn, where he pursued his interest in computer engineering. Between 1954 and 1964, he worked alongside Karlheinz Stockhausen at the electronic music studios of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) in Cologne, collaborating with other aspiring composers including Gyorgy Ligeti and Mauricio Kagel; in 1956, Koenig completed his first major electronic piece, Klangfiguren II, followed a year later by Essay.
During the early '60s, Koenig began writing a program -- named simply Project 1, or PR1 -- designed to compose and generate music via the computer; when in 1964 he accepted the position of creative director with the Institute for Sonology in Utrecht, Holland, he took the software with him, putting on the finishing touches three years later. While at Utrecht, Koenig also began experimenting with the Variable Function Generator, a machine developed by physics student Stan Templaars able to generate sound using roughly the same technology as an analog sequencer. Hitting upon the idea of treating the VFG as an oscillator, between 1967 and 1969 Koenig used the machine to compose a series of groundbreaking pieces known collectively as the Funktionen.
In 1968, Koenig also began work on a second program, PR2; its complicated design made it difficult to use, however, and so PR1 remained his primary outlet for computerized composition. He continued tinkering with PR1 for years to follow, in 1978 introducing VOSIM oscillators to the project to create an extended program christened PRIX; a series of subsequent additions resulted in another upgrade, PRIXM, and the completion of 1979's Output. When the Institute of Sonology was relocated to the Hague in 1986, Koenig retired from his post to focus full-time on computerized composition as well as developing new musical programs; in 1991, he also published the first in a series of theoretical writings titled Aesthetic Practice. Pieces here include [Disc 1] Klanfiguren II; Essay; Terminus I and II; Output; [Disc 2] Funktion Rot, Grau, Violett, Blau, Indigo

GARY LUCAS & JOZEF VAN WISSEM - The Universe Of Absence (BVhaast 0105; Netherlands) This is the second splendid offering from two most gifted pickers, our good friend Gary Lucas on guitars, electronics and vocals and BVHaast label man Jozef van Wissem on lute. In the liner booklet Gary tells the sad tale of the Knitting Factory's European office, once an oasis for Knitting Factory bands on tour, now unfortunately closed for good as the Knit in NY is also pretty much closed to the avant/experimental sounds it was once a home for. The Knit's old Euro office was in Holland and this is where Gary first met Jozef, a kindred spirit in the world of adventurous picking. This superb disc was recorded at various studios in NYC, s well as one piece live from a gig in Amsterdam. The combination of Gary's national steel guitar and Jozef's lute on both "A Hawk from a Handsaw" and "Sickness unto Death" is an odd blend that works just right. There are two selective covers on this collection, Jackson Browne's "These Days" and the Beatles psychedelic classic "Tomorrow Never Knows". "These Days" was made famous by Nico on an early solo effort, before Jackson did it. Gary sings it here and does a nice job in his quaint, calm voice. What works best is the cosmic blend of Gary's mysterious electric guitar submerged in effects with Jozef's dreamy acoustic lute playing on "New Worlds for Old", quietly mind-blowing. Gary's world-weary bluesy picking and Jozef nimble lute playing on "Screw your Courage to the Sticking Place' show how two very different approaches can reach across the ocean and time/tradition and merge into a healthy new form. The title track is a long epic-length piece that is like slow-moving journey through space. Perfect for a joint and some inner space travel. The version of The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" is especially cosmic, with Gary's ghost-like voice and brain-melting slide with effects helping us to sail down the stream and into the void

GARY LUCAS & JOZEF VAN WISSEM - Diplopia (BVhaast 0103; Netherlands) "Now here's an interesting project: Guitar whiz Gary Lucas teams up with ten-string Renaissance lutist Jozef Van Wissem for an album of duets done in a sort of Renaissance stylee (a few actually date to the 1600s), and the results are fantastic. Lucas sticks to his acoustic and National Steel guitars, and Van Wissem plays just a bit of percussion and very minor electronic treatments in addition to the lute. Van Wissem wrote all the tunes, but Lucas is very keyed in to the music. Sometimes playing circular lines around the lute ("For Whom the Bell Tolls," "If It Doesn't Fit, Thou Must Acquit") and lending more of a Delta slide feel at other times ("Diplopia," "Will o' the Wisp"), Lucas demonstrates what a sympathetic player he can be. Sounding vaguely Eastern at times, Diplopia is a stunning fusion of ancient and contemporary that ends up sounding timeless. Unique and excellent!" Sean Westergaard, AMG

SUN RA - The Futuristic Sounds Of Sun Ra (Savoy 17259) Although Sun Ra had only been recording professionally for five years, The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra (1962) marks the avant-garde pianist and bandleader's 15th appearance on a long-player. It's also one of the very first to have been documented after Sun Ra and the Solar Myth Science/Astro Infinity Arkestra relocated from Chicago to New York City. The compact compositions and intensely swinging arrangements provide a typically nimble backdrop for the singular, if not still somewhat futuristic sounds of Ra's seminal post-bop sides. Prominent among these earliest platters are the indelibly off-kilter melodies and tight arrangements. These directly contrast the decidedly looser and extended free jazz incorporated into later efforts such as The Magic City (1966) and Atlantis (1969). When recorded in early October of 1961, Sun Ra had yet to take the leap into amplified keyboards and was still performing on piano. In both obvious and subtle ways, this effects the performance. A prime example can be heard on the bouncy and ethereal "Bassism," as much of the tune's inherent and palpable beauty comes from the intimacy of the ensemble. This is especially true of Marshall Allen's haunting flute solo, which adds an ambiance of mystery to the hypnotic swirl. The undeniable influence of Thelonious Monk's gorgeously arithmetical tone clusters is evident throughout "Of Sounds and Something Else." Equally strong are the contributions from Pat Patrick (trombone) and John Gilmore (sax). "The Beginning" is notable for its highly percussive vibe, evolving into some sinuous and bluesy leads from Allen. The stately and processional rendering of Victor Young and Harold Adamson's "China Gates" features a rare solo vocal from percussionist Ricky Murray -- who recalls the dulcet fluidity of Billy Eckstine. Along with other early efforts such as Sun Song (1956) and Visits Planet Earth (1958), The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra is an essential early entry in the artist's voluminous 100-plus title discography, providing insight into his remarkably complex musical scores, as well as the equally interesting instrumentation of the Solar Myth Science/Astro Infinity Arkestra. - Lindsay Planer, AMG

SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA - Live In Paris at The Gibus (Universe; Italy) Recorded live in Paris in 1973, Sun Ra and his Arkestra create a magical atmosphere that is difficultly reproduced in-studio. Improvisation is, in fact, the primary impetus behind the band, therefore making a live setting an essential element. As usual, Sun Ra never forgets the roots of jazz music and among his original pieces, we find Jelly Roll Morton's classic 'King Porter Stomp'. Another important testimony to one of the greatest innovators in jazz

SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA - Vol. 1: Nuits De La Fondation Maeght (Universe; Italy) Volume 1 features the first half of Sun Ra and his Arkestra's live performance at the Fondation Maeght in France in 1970. Opening with 'Enlightment', sung by Sun Ra and June Tyson, and followed by 'The Star Gazers', a keyboard piece that introduces 'Shadow World', characterized by Marshall Allen's chilling sax solo. However, the apex is reached by 'The Cosmic Explorer', a 20 min 'multiple keyboards freakout'. These inimitable moments captured on this recording, confirm the greatness of this ensemble

SUN RA & HIS ARKESTRA - Vol. 2: Nuits De La Fondation Maeght (Universe; Italy) Part two of Sun Ra's 1970 appearance at the Fondation Maeght. An important document for this innovator of jazz. Improvisation, percussion, Afro rhythms, mysticism, and the occult -- all this and more is what the Sun Ra universe is made of. One of the most mysterious and fascinating figures in the history of jazz

CHARLES MINGUS - Jazz Composers Workshop (Savoy 17189) The complex music on this LP finds bassist Charles Mingus looking toward contemporary classical music in some of the rather cool-toned arrangements. It was not until later in 1955 that he found the right combination of influences in which to express himself best but these slightly earlier performances have their moments. Four of the selections feature tenor-saxophonist Teo Macero, pianist Wally Cirillo, drummer Kenny Clarke and Mingus in a quartet while the other five tracks showcase a sextet with Macero, George Barrow on tenor and baritone and clarinetist-altoist John La Porta. [This 2003 reissue boasts improved sound and a bonus track: an alternate take of "Body and Soul".] - Scott Yanow, AMG

WILBUR HARDEN/JOHN COLTRANE - Jazz Way Out (Savoy 17257) This edition has the bonus cuts "Rhodamagnetics [tk 1]" and Dial Africa [tk 1]"! The presence of John Coltrane on this 1958 Savoy release is its obvious drawing card, but in fact there are impressive contributions from all hands. Leader Wilbur Harden had left the jazz scene by the early '60s, which is a pity. He was a player with fresh ideas and an engaging command of his trumpet's and flugelhorn's middle register. The sextet heard on this CD performs two Harden compositions and one by the group's trombonist, Curtis Fuller, for a skimpy total running time of 29 minutes. The "way out" reference in the title is misleading. There are traces of "exotic" Asian and African influences, but they never overpower what is essentially an intelligent, straight-ahead, hard bop date. At the time of this release, Coltrane had been recording as a leader and sideman for Prestige and was on his second tour of duty with Miles Davis, whose group was on the verge of recording Kind of Blue. Coltrane was also about to begin recording for Atlantic. Interestingly, Jazz Way Out's pianist, Tommy Flanagan, and drummer, Art Taylor, were to join Coltrane on the classic take of "Giant Steps" and most of the other tracks on the tenor player's Atlantic debut. With Harden's group, Coltrane, as he did with Davis and on his own Atlantic recordings, systematically (and with sublime composure) turns the chord changes inside out, upside down, and sideways, creating a new vocabulary, syntax, and structure for jazz. Coltrane completists will definitely want these tracks in their collections, but the less fanatical listener will also have no difficulty in appreciating the collective performances of the entire sextet. - Jim Todd, AMG

PHIL MANZANERA With ROBERT WYATT - Vozero (Expression 12; UK) Phil's album from 2000 is a tour-de-force...and a must for Robert Wyatt fans as well!!! "I made this album because I wanted to make an album, as I did at the time of 'Diamond Head'. It represents a new departure on my musical journey and it's been a great trip on all sorts of levels. Vozero comes from intuition and feeling; the heart rather than the head. It reflects my Colombian and British background, my years in Cuba, love won and love lost. The words are drawn from my own experiences making it my most personal statement. It's taken me 25 years to find a way to express myself vocally as well as instrumentally."-Phil
"Vozero is well up to par with the earlier work. In recent years Manzanera has been heavily involved with producing Latin American artists, and, unsurprisingly, those influences are to the fore here, alongside touches of Africa and New Zealand (the result of his recent tour with The African Gypsies for WOMAD). But the songs are mostly in English, and still display a very English pop sensibility. The Audience's Nigel Butler adds sprinkles of techno-wizardry, Andy Mackay turns up with an oboe and Spanish singer Enrique Bunbury moodily raps it all up on the final track. Meanwhile Manzanera's guitar work is as tasteful and delicate as ever, and his voice is a revelation, blending seamlessly with lead and backing vocals from Robert Wyatt on songs that are touching, mature and deeply rewarding.-Pete Hogan (Uncut). Highly recommended!!!
