AND NOW,THIS WEEK'S TREASURE TROVE...
THE REVOLUTIONARY ENSEMBLE - and now... (Pi Recordings 113) Will wonders never cease!?! 'and now..." is the incredible new studio offering from one of guiding lights of the sixties avant-jazz legends, The Revolutionary Ensemble. Their distinguished personnel was and still is Leroy Jenkins on violin, Sirone on acoustic bass and Jerome Cooper on multi-dimensional drums, percussion and other assorted oddities. The Revolutionary Ensemble recorded 5 rare records in the late sixties/early seventies, only one of which is in print on CD, 'The Psyche' on Mutable. After some twenty years, they returned for a triumphant reunion set at this year's Vision fest in May and are now back to stay. What's fascinating about this music is that although it is mainly improvised, a great deal of rehearsal and skeletal charts give this music its magical focus. It blends many extreme elements - fragile, gnarly, outside, inside, intense and sublime into a unified group sound. The overall sound and production is also marvelous, balanced just right. It is quite rare for an avant-jazz unit from over two decades ago, to get back together and sound as if they never left, but this is indeed the case here. Their nearly 21 minute epic, "911-544" has Jerome playing some strange keyboard, piano and double reed, while Leroy bends notes on a harmonica, as well as some mysterious doubling bowing both strings. This piece is completely mind-blowing and reminds me of the way Sun Ra often prepares us for space travel with his omni-dimensional sounds. The Revolutionary Ensemble return once more to the stage for their CD release performance tomorrow night, Saturday, October 30th for one set at 9:30 pm at Joe's Pub - 425 Lafayette St., near Astor Place. You know where we will be that night. - BLG

SCORCH TRIO - Luggumt (Rune Grammofon 2040) Raoul BjØrkenheim, the highly original Finnish composer and guitarist, is representing the perfect balance between raw electricity and restrained elegance. Here he is paired with Norway's hottest young rhythm section (Ingebrigt Haker Flaten & Paal Nilssen-Love, who have worked with Mats Gustafsson) in what can only be described as a classic power trio, burning with an untamed, but still focused energy. Bookended by two lengthy tour de force workouts, this is a more varied collection than their self-titled debut from 2002. We get some lovely free playing demonstrating the great interplay these musicians are capable of, beautiful soundscapes and some strange sounding Korean court music vibes. All recorded live in the studio without overdubs or edits, and once again to analogue tape. Along with the new Nels Cline Singers disc, we now have two amazing jazz/rock power trio releases in a row for those wacky guitar fans worldwide! Bruce's (no doubt gushing) review next week. Possible east coast tour upcoming.

RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA - Mother Tongue (Pi Recordings 114) This is Mr. Mahanthappa's third great release and it features Rudresh on alto sax, longtime collaborator and piano wiz Vijay Iyer, Francois Moutin on acoustic bass and Elliot Humberto Kavee on drums. Like his constant colleague, Vijay, Rudresh also has a concept behind each of his fine releases. 'Mother Tongue' deals with the misconception that there is only one language, religion or culture in India, where Rudresh's ancestors are from. "This vast nation (actually) encompasses a diverse population that can be culturally delineated by (various) religions, languages, musics, foods and more." Thus each piece on this CD musically conveys a different language or culture. Opening with "The Preserver", the quartet leap forward with a powerful and invigorating work that burns at a fast, nervous tempo. While Vijay brings to tempo back down to earth for a majestic solo, Rudresh erupts, pushing the quartet higher as he soars through his solo, with an inspired rhythm team tightly navigated the rapids down below. "English" has a cool, funky sorta groove, yet there a couple of different intersecting layers of lines at work, nothing is as simple as it might seem. "Kannada" is a lovely, rather mysterious ballad with each member of the quartet subtly playing around the structure, yet coming together on the theme. Rudresh often composes tunes that appear to have various lines moving apart and together at the same time, splitting the quartet into inter-connected sections, his own take on harmelodics, perhaps? Rudresh's distinctive pinched tone and unique way of bending his notes on his alto sax playing, also make him stand out as a new musician with his own discernable voice. Rudresh has also selected kindred spirits who do an outstanding job of dealing the complex layers of activity involved. I don't need to tell you much more about the ever-astounding Vijay Iyer, since I've consistently mentioned that he is the main new pianist to watch from the vast downtown scene. I must admit that drummer supreme, Elliot Kavee, has surprised many with his dynamic work with Henry Threadgill, Joseph Jarman and Fieldwork, he just keeps getting better and better. Francois Moutin is another fine contrabassist, whose playing I don't know nearly as well, but he also plays superbly throughout. Intense music for intense times. - BLG

FRANK GRATKOWSKI/GEORG GRAEWE/PAUL LOVENS - Quicksand (Meniscus 007) Featuring Frank on alto sax & clarinets, Georg Graewe on piano and Paul Lovens on drums & saw. On Monday of this week (Oct. 25th), DMG had a very special duo set here in our cozy store with Frank Gratkowski and John Lindberg on contrabass, both marvelous musicians with long histories and numerous releases. Both left us with a few of their own discs and this one stands out. 'Quicksand' was recorded live in Cologne, Germany in January of 1999 and this is the first time we have had this gem in stock. Frank, Georg and Paul also have long careers in improvised music and this trio works well together. Frank and Georg have worked together on a few occasions in the past. There is a playful and occasionally rambunctious spirit on this trio date. All three are masters of small sounds, rustling, cautious and quietly mesmerizing. Lovens is especially magical when he bows his cymbals and saw, creating eerie textures that inspire Frank and Georg to also work with a subtle, fractured tapestry which evolves through more dramatic and intense sections, occasionally erupting into some explosive exchanges. My favorite part(s) is when they take off together and spin their lines of notes into an intricate and breathtaking collage of integrated elements. This is certainly Euro-free/improv at its best. - BLG

FOUR NEW ITEMS FROM THE WONDERFUL and ADVENTUROUS DRIMALA LABEL [IN STOCK MONDAY OR TUESDAY]:
JOE McPHEE & DOMINIC DUVAL - Rules of Engagement, Vol. 2 (Drimala Records 04-347-05) Featuring Dominic Duval on contrabass and multi-winds player Joe McPhee on soprano sax only. Second superb studio date from two local giants who also make up 2/3 of Trio X. You can tell that these two master improvisers have been playing together for last decade or so, from the way they work so perfectly together. All but two of these pieces were written/improvised by Joe and/or Dominic, with select covers, a touching version of "Amazing Grace" and the standard "While My Lady Sleeps". Many of these pieces have a solemn, subdued quality that is perfect for those reflective times of late night listening and some fine wine. As a longtime Joe McPhee fan, I must admit that he never lets me down either on records (many dozens) or live. I am also an old friend and fan of Dominic and here, his playing is at its best, his tone, his choice of notes and that vibe of digging deep into one's heart and soul and giving it up really rings true on this fabulous date. - BLG

ELLEN CHRISTIE & GARY HASSAY - Tribute to Paradise (Drimala 04-347-04) Ms. Christie is one of the most distinctive avant/jazz vocalists to emerge from the downtown network over the past two decades and is featured on a handful of recordings with William Parker and Jemeel Moondoc. Gary Hassay plays alto sax and I only know him from a couple of recordings on this same label, one with William Parker and Toshi Makihara. We were fortunate to hear Ellen doing her unique style of vocalizing this past weekend at the Vision series with Rob Brown, Roy Campbell, Henry Grimes and Rashied Bakr, since her live appearances are so rare. 'Tribute to Paradise' finds this duo quietly exploring their unique sounds together in an exquisite balance. Both voices have a similar range and caress each other gracefully, bending their notes around one another. By the second piece, "3 Deuces Three", they start to sailing and swerving together, again twisting their voices together as they explore similar terrain. Gary also vocalizes on three pieces and does a fine job of interweaving his voice with Ellen's is a special, connected way. It sounds like there are few layers of vocals on these tracks, creating some marvelous, mysterious ghost-like disembodied voices and a bit of throat singing as well. This fine duo creates a very personal story or journey that unfolds slowly and takes us along with them to new places. Indeed, a very special and intimate experience. - BLG

MICHAEL JEFRY STEVENS/MICHAEL RABINOWITZ - Play (Drimala 04-937-05) 'Play' continues Drimala Records' ongoing exploration of the art of the duet. On this recording pianist Michael Jefry Stevens is joined for the first time since the early 1990s by former Mosaic Sextet band mate Michael Rabinowitz on bassoon. Performing an improvisational, some might say through composed, journey somewhere along the third stream, the two Michaels create a listening experience that is as varied and rich musically as it is deep aesthetically. The music is open, powerful, graceful, and reflective, but most of all there is a statement of possibility here as each musician allows the other space to fully explore their respective aesthetic. As one might expect for a journey along the third stream, yes one can hear echoes of Ravel, Debussy, Stravinsky, and even Vivaldi in the music. And, yes one can also hear echoes of Rabinowitz's work with Mingus' charts and Stevens' 20 years of jazz explorations. But one can also hear the echoes of an unheard music, a music not yet played. It is this artful continuum of possibility along the past, the present, and the future without cliche or reference that makes the music of Stevens and Rabinowitz so rewarding.

JOHN HEWARD TRIO - Let Them Pass (laissez-passer) (Drimala 04-936-07) Features Montreal-based drummer, John Heward, in his first recording as leader, with two longtime associates, Joe Giardullo (flute, tenor saxophone, and bass clarinet) and Mike Bisio (bass). When discussing John's music, the term "leader" must not be taken literally. This is true collective composition created in the moment...with John acting more as the facilitator of the group aesthetic. On this recording, John demonstrates that the well-placed single tap may portend as much meaning and indicator of direction as a flurry of rim-shots. His drumming, by opening up the time into a loose lattice-like structure, working more with a subterranean force of pulse than ideas of classical rhythm, forces his fellow musicians to listen in a particularly concentrated manner.I n his inimically subtle manner, John leads the trio in a music full with a thick frothy blend of reflections, tradition, and emotion. The listening is almost deafening as the trio treads effortlessly from the Middle East-Eastern European modal traditions to a simple very American blues form. Very quietly, but powerfully in its knowledge, the trio uses these blends of musical traditions to find a new tradition uniquely their own. But more importantly, along the way they give the listener the musical equivalent of a "Laissez-passer" pass...granting unrestricted access and movement for a journey of discovery...from within and without.

JOHNNIE VALENTINO With ERIK FRIEDLANDER/MIKE SARIN/MICK ROSSI - Eight Shorts in Search of David Lynch (ToneScience 7002) Guitarist/composer/sound designer Johnnie Valentino features eight sound beds custom-designed by Johnnie that are used as springboards for improvisations by small groups that include musicians Erik Friedlander, Vinny Golia, Russ Johnson, Randy Jones, Elissa Lala, Mick Rossi, and Mike Sarin. Johnnie created eight multi-layered sound beds that were subsequently used for spontaneous interaction with live improvising musicians. He considers the resulting pieces "short stories or essays or short films." Titling the collection Eight Shorts in Search of David Lynch is not to imply any correspondence to specific films, but to indicate the pieces' affinity to Lynch's outlook on sound and sound design and to highlight their bizarre twists and turns that are sonically reminiscent of the of Lynch's movies. The weird and wonderful juxtaposition of sounds - some almost supernatural - and the spectacularly clear and present sonics make this CD captivating ... like a Lynch movie. Johnnie Valentino, guitar, ukulele, mandolin; Mick Rossi, piano, prepared piano, drums, percussion, tabla samples; Erik Friedlander, cello; Russ Johnson, trumpet; Vinny Golia, flutes, bass clarinet; Mike Sarin, drums; Randy Jones, tuba; Elissa Lala, voice. Bruce's review next week.

MICK ROSSI/RUSS JOHNSON - New Math (ToneScience 7001) Mick Rossi plays piano, prepared piano, clay flutes & percussion and once had a fine release out on the Knit label. Russ Johnson plays trumpet, was/is in The Other Quartet (2 CDs on the Knit label) and works with Jenny Scheinman. In a world that can leave us sensorily inundated and dependent on recreation seekers picking least common denominator entertainments, we find ourselves looking for sense and humor, comfort and respite, for people who pay attention and to whom we should pay attention. Mick Rossi and Russ Johnson are two people worthy of our attention. Their music is not New Agey or folky or what is popularly thought of as "comfort music," but it is organic: real, unadulterated, non-Pasteurized playing, filled with sonically nutritious things. Out? Not really. New. Organized and organizing. In and out of each other's orbit, affected and affecting, in one place and everywhere, illuminating the understanding of "consciousness" and "intuition" in a post-quantum physics world of entanglement where nothing (and everything) is as it might seem.

GAMELAN MADU SARI - New Nectar (Songlines 2402/Canada) The percussion-based Javanese gamelan orchestra is one of the world's great musical traditions. Here five Vancouver composer-performers bring their experience in this and other forms of music -- Western classical, new music, jazz, Vietnamese and Balinese musics, electro-acoustic composition, and improvisation -- extending the tradition in ways of fascinating beauty. Founded in 1986, Gamelan Madu Sari ("The Essence of Honey") has performed traditional and new music for gamelan as well traditional Javanese dance, dance drama, shadow play, and contemporary multimedia works. For its first record the Gamelan has selected compositions created on it by four composers who have also been active as performers in the group over the years, and by jazz/improv pianist Paul Plimley. Two sets of gamelan instruments are represented, and each work takes a novel approach to form, with a unique play of instrumental colours. Kenneth Newby's "Dreams He is a Ball of Fire... Or a Hummingbird" includes spoken text, choral singing, and interlocking lines of rhythmically charged counterpoint, all in celebration of the birth of his son. Its archetypal text and ritual mood are characteristic of Newby's music, which is concerned with the natural world, the meeting of cultures, "deep listening" and transcendence (Ecology of Souls, 1993; Sirens, 1997; Newby was also prominent in the ethno-ambient groups Trance Mission and Lights in a Fat City). Michael O'Neill's "Lessons of the Garden" uses hocketing between the two gamelan tuning systems, slendro and pelog, to produce an expanded mode. Partly inspired by Ravel and minimalism, it swells and flows. O'Neill also plays and composes new music for Scottish bagpipes, and "Lessons" begins with an eerie prelude for droning plastic chanters and clanging clusters of bronze. Chris Miller's two pieces are a study in contrasts. "Thinly, roundly," a collaboration with the Vancouver-based Vietnamese duo Khac Chi, combines the liquid tones of two genders (Javanese resonating metallophones) with the bending melismas of two dan bau (Vietnamese monochords). Its melodies and textures build in subtle transformations from a contemplative opening dialogue towards a dancing, unifying conclusion. "Whining horses eat more HEY doncha no" is a deadpan adaptation of certain traditional gamelan structures to something perhaps closer to avant-garde pointillism: spare and quirky, it seems to question its very nature. Mark Parlett's "Intimate Distance" is probably the densest composition on the record; its layers of instruments and a vocal duo combine in unpredictable ways in search of some elusive new harmony between the individual self and the world's being. Paul Plimley's "Born Again Needle Dancers" brings a jazz sensibility, wordless vocals, group improvisation, and an ingenious polyrhythmic and tonal conception to his exploration of the gamelan's resources. Plimley's interest in non-western traditions has also notably resulted in duets with South Indian percussionist Trichy Sankaran, 'Ivory Ganesh Meets Doctor Drums' (Songlines 1998). Each piece in its own way furthers the dialogue between East and West, developing the expressive potential of the gamelan, not just as a source of sensuous, intriguing timbres but also as a deep tradition with its own informing ethos and set of musical values (for example, freedom of individual expression within a complex and highly controlled social organization of sound). New Nectar is a major contribution to this ongoing cross-cultural experiment; it can equally be appreciated for its inclusive approach to forging a new music of substance and delight beyond categories.

JON BALKE & MAGNETIC NORTH ORCHESTRA - Diverted Travels (ECM 1886) This appears to be Jon Balke's fourth release for ECM, his second with the Magnetic North Orchestra, who are actually an octet. The personnel includes Per Jorgensen on trumpet and vocal, Fredrik Lundin on bass flute & saxes, Bjarte Eike & Peter Spissky on violins, Mr. Balke on piano & keyboards, Thomas Pitt on bass and Ingar Zach & Helge Abdreas Norbakken both on percussion. The only name here that I am previously familiar with is Ingar Zach, who has worked with Derek Bailey. This music is a unique blend of modern classical, jazz and even folk influences. Mr. Balke's is more involved with textures and moods as the strings, muted trumpet, flute and keyboard(s) drone and drift together in a magical haze. Both percussionists work their wonders with layers of tribal or ethnic beats, reminding me of those marvelous rhythms on Peter Gabriel's 'Security' record. What's interesting about this release is that there are practically no solos, no obvious song or structure, yet it not really free either. It is more like soundtrack music, where each piece evokes a certain feeling or scene. Often a few instruments glow or wheeze together, creating dream-like vibrations. The mysterious and occasionally somber muted trumpet seems to be the main character in many of the scenes, while the sax and strings at times also tell their tales. Pianist Jon Balke doesn't even take a solo until the 10th piece and what a marvelous little excursion it is. An extremely well-crafted treasure from those fine folks at ECM. - BLG

FOUR MORE GEMS FROM THE CREATIVE IMPROVISED MUSIC PROJECTS (CIMP) LABEL:
MARY ANNE DRISCOLL & PAUL MURPHY - Inside Out (CIMP #314) Last year Cadence released a long lost studio session with Jimmy Lyons ('Red Snapper' #167), put together by Lyon's longtime drummer Paul Murphy. It was an outstanding effort from all members of Paul Murphy's great quintet, especially their pianist, Mary Anne Driscoll. Originally this bay area-based duo moved to NY during the seventies, worked with Jimmy Lyons and Karen Borca, eventually split up and moved their separate ways, Mary Anne to Maine to raise a family and Paul back to Washington, DC where he grew up. Bob Rusch suggested that the duo reunite for this recording, after not playing together for some 13 years and this was a great idea. Both are extraordinary musicians and right from the beginning there are off and running. All but one of the 16 pieces are relatively short (under 8 minutes) and each piece explores a variety of textures, tempos and directions. Although some journalists might sight Cecil Taylor as an influence, I hear more Marilyn Crispell-like waves of ideas in Mary Anne's powerful playing. Paul is also a master drummer, from his sublime cymbal work, free-flowing mallet playing to his explosive, yet extremely focused dialogue with the piano. The duo is very well-balanced, blending their waves together and shadowing each other perfectly. This is a completely outstanding duo excursion to needs to heard! - BLG

LISLE ELLIS - MARCO ENEIDI - PETER VALSAMIS - American Roadwork (CIMP #312) Marco Eneidi is one of the most intense free/jazz alto sax players and has lived on both coasts, working with William Parker and Glenn Spearman. Former Vancouver-based contrabassist, Lisle Ellis is another of those under-recognized giants and is still playing with Larry Ochs' phenomenal What We Live. Drummer Peter Valsamis hails from Montreal, can't say that I've heard of him before this, although he sounds fine here, no doubt we'll be hearing from again soon. This fine trio had been on tour for a month before this session took place and it sounds as if they were in truly inspired form that day. Unexpectedly, this CD opens with a fine rendition of a blues standard "Baby Please Don't Go", which is done with some fine earthy playing. Actually, that blues vibe runs through this entire release, with Lisle especially centering those triumphant, yet sad spirits. Lisle's powerful bass is always pushing the trio to soar and sail, from introspective moments to those explosive ones, there is a constant dialogue going on with the rhythm team as Marco tells his stories on top. Marco has a most distinctive way of sputtering his lines of notes, which I recall from his days when he lived here and played with William Parker and other downtown greats. He seems to use this technique or signature sound more selectively nowadays and the rhythm team know just when to jump in and connect with his unique approach. Although that blues vibe is at the center of many of these tunes, it never holds them back from erupting and exploring more diverse terrain at times. - BLG

GEBHARD ULLMANN / STEVE SWELL / HILL GREENE / BARRY ALTSCHUL - Desert Songs and Other Landscapes (CIMP 315) Featuring Gebhard on saxes & clarinet, Steve on trombone, Hill on double bass and legendary avant-jazz drummer Barry Altschul. Gebhard Ullmann has more than a dozen releases out on various labels (Leo, Soul Note & Nabel) and with numerous projects, like Conference Call and his current big band project. 'Desert Songs' features six long pieces, four by Gebhard and two by Steve. "Box Set" opens freely and intensely. Steve's first solo erupts with master drummer Barry Altschul and bassist Hill Greene also burning and creating propulsion and tension underneath. Gebhard has no choice but to also erupt intensely on his tenor sax. Gebhard's "Seven 9-8" has an odd, twisted structure, yet is played tightly with both horns chattering intensely together, the rhythm section laying out in parts. "Camel's Gait/Desert Sands" is a long and intense free excursion, which evolves through sections as the members of the quartet connect and react with one another in stages. Everyone gets some inspired solo space as well and the entire piece tells quite a story. "Under the Other" starts with a rubbery bass intro, which eventually turns into a great hard swinging romper, with a splendid drum solo from Barry. Gebhard plays very differently in each project he works with, here we get to hear him scream and wail more than usual. On the final piece "Desert...Bleue...East", Gebhard's bass clarinet and Steve's trombone play some fine, laid back, mysterious harmonies, creating an oasis in an otherwise more rambunctious session. A great way to bring this turbulent storm to a more peaceful end. - BLG

LOU GRASSI QUARTET - Avanti Galoppi (CIMP #313) Featuring Rob Brown on alto sax, Herb Robertson on trumpets, Ken Filiano on double bass and Lou Grassi on drums. The downtown drum sensation Lou Grassi's 7th superb release for the CIMP/Cadence empire, his 21st appearance on CIMP alone. This is the first release by this swell downtown all-star quartet, although it would hard to tell from listening to this inspired offering. All four members contributed compositions, so we have a most diverse program. Rob's "Underground Elevation" features a solemn theme and warm harmonies for both horns, with Ken's lovely bass strumming eloquently underneath and Lou's sublime cymbal and mallet work. It is Rob's passionate alto solo that really shines through as Herb also spins off another of those spunky, spectacular (pocket?) trumpet solos. The title piece features more somber horn playing as the rhythm team plays this goofy, prancing groove. Ken's "Dancing Shadows" has the bass and drums fluttering profusely while horns spiral around one another like bees around a hive. Herb's solo is another astonishing flurry of notes, which is too good to believe. "Ballad of 9/11" is a somber, dreamy ballad with some sad, drifting horns, which builds into a fine affective portrait of a sad day. Herb's strange "Squatting Women" is filled with unexpected twists and turns, hypnotic bowed bass creates a unnerving cushion below the odd horn squeaks and squawks, trading ideas back and forth and together as they ascend. Truly, an incredible piece. Finally, Ken's "Willie B" is fueled by more mesmerizing bowed bass, spinning mallets and droning horns which make way for a crowning conclusion, after a few inspired solos from Rob and Herb. - BLG

TAR MACK - Tha Darky Business EP (TruGroid no #) This is a Burnt Sugar off-shoot project featuring Jerry Darkcloud on vocals, Rene Akan on guitar, Tetragrammaton on bass & Chris Eddleton on drums, plus guests Mazz Swift on violin, Okkyung Lee on cello, Shazad Ismaily on EFX bass, Thom Loubet on babbling brook guitar and Satch Hoyt on triangle. This 36 minute, six song EP is a pretty hot mix of P. Funk, Prince and other black/rock/funk coolness. There are layers of Prince-like vocals and some great hard rocking guitars. "South Central Comfort" has a great punk-rocking groove, more screaming guitars and some wack spoken-word vocals. "Trippin II" has some sly and intricate layers of electric guitars, as well as various voices done in that P. Funk style. I dig the laid-back, funky, space-rocking vibe of "one sorry excuse for a superpower", the synth-like guitars and strings create some fine, hypnotic atmospherics. Overall, this is a pretty cool diversion until that next live Burnt Sugar installment comes our way. - BLG

SOFT MACHINE - Third (Sony; Japan) [new 2004 re-master] Considered by many to be their finest moment in their almost decade long ever-evolving journey as the ultimate Canterbury band and jazz/rock/experimental pioneers - this was a massive two album set with four side-long epics. The Softs trio of Mike Ratledge (fuzz organ & electric piano), Hugh Hopper (el. fuzz bass) and Robert Wyatt (drums and final vocals for SM) added Elton Dean (alto sax & saxello) to their line-up plus other horns players from the Keith Tippett Group. Terry Riley's tape-loop experiments are utilized to the fullest here and 31 years later, this still continues to blow minds. Previous versions of this cd have extremely muddy/muffled sound and should be avoided. This Japanese import is the best CD sound so far...

SOFT MACHINE - Fourth [4] (Sony; Japan) [new 2004 re-master] Last one w/ Robert Wyatt; quartet with Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean, Mike Ratledge, and guests Alan Skidmore, Jimmy Hastings! The Soft Machine's collective skill is hyper-complex and refined, as they are extremely literate in all fields of musical study. Fourth is the band's free purging of all of that knowledge, woven into noisy, smoky structures of sound. Their arcane rhythms have a stop-and-go mentality of their own that sounds incredibly fresh even though it is sonically steeped in soft and warm tones. Obviously there is a lot of skillful playing going on, as the mix of free jazz, straight-ahead jazz, and Gong-like psychedelia coalesces into a skronky plateau. Robert Wyatt's drumming is impeccable -- so perfect that it at times becomes an unnoticeable map upon which the band takes their instinctive direction. Mike Ratledge's keys are warm throughout, maintaining an earthy quality that keeps its eye on the space between the ground and the heavens that the Soft Machine attempt to inhabit. Elton Dean's saxophone work screams out the most inventive cadence, and since it's hardly rhythmic, it takes front and center, spitting out a crazy language. Certainly the band is the preface to a good portion of Chicago's post-rock output, as they undoubtedly give a nod to Miles Davis' Bitches' Brew experiments, which were going on in the U.S. at the same time. - Ken Taylor, AMG

SOFT MACHINE - Fifth [5] (Sony; Japan) As the Soft Machine moved further away from rock on Third and Fourth, drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt's dissatisfaction with the band's direction grew and, by the time sessions started for Fifth in late 1971, he had left permanently to form Matching Mole. While the instrumental Fourth had forayed deep into jazz-rock territory, Fifth found the Soft Machine working almost completely in the jazz idiom. At the time of Wyatt's departure, keyboardist Mike Ratledge commented that the band's co-founder had "never enjoyed or accepted working in complex time signatures." However, Wyatt's replacement -- Phil Howard -- didn't prove to be the kind of timekeeper Ratledge and bassist Hugh Hopper had in mind and his free jazz orientation led to his dismissal during the recording of the album. Howard's propulsive rhythms nevertheless make a vital contribution to memorable Ratledge compositions like "All White" and "Drop" as they gather momentum and coalesce into driving grooves. "All White" is focused largely on Elton Dean's sax performance while "Drop" ultimately showcases the intense busy fuzz of Ratledge's organ. In places on Fifth, there does seem to be an element of tension between the more structured approach of Ratledge and Hopper and the free-form inclinations of Dean. The looser style of Dean's squalling sax playing is foregrounded particularly on "As If" -- another Ratledge piece. A certain constituency among Soft Machine fans tends to concentrate on the band's earlier releases and to consider everything from Fourth onward less compelling. That attitude has something to do with not being especially interested in jazz, so it's not entirely fair to dismiss this album without qualifying such a judgment. Anyone expecting to hear a rock album or a jazz-rock album will probably be disappointed with Fifth. This is essentially a jazz record, more concerned with texture and interplay than with song-based structures. - Wilson Neat of AMG

SOFT MACHINE - Six [6] (Sony; Japan) [new 2004 re-master] 2 LPs (1 live, 1 studio) on 1 disc; MIke Ratledge on fuzz organ & synth, Karl Jenkins on bari sax, oboe & keyboards, Hugh Hopper on electric bass and John Marshall on drums.
The Soft Machine were many things to many people, but to most, the real Soft Machine ceased to exist when founder Robert Wyatt left to work on his conspicuously titled Matching Mole project. This departure is generally credited to the Soft Machine's creative advance away from prog rock and toward jazz-fusion. Three years and three records after Wyatt's departure, this creative motion was in full sail, and the release of Six cemented the band in their distant station beyond the gravity of anything that resembled rock and its spacious, cutting-edge sonics and more symmetrical rhythms. The jazz era that began on Fourth and continued through the '70s mutates slightly on Six, from the free improvisational structures used frequently on prior releases into a somewhat more constrained fusion design. This is due largely to new member Karl Jenkins, who like Wyatt's replacement John Marshall was formerly of Nucleus; Jenkins makes a mighty impact on the Soft Machine's sound with his sax playing and songwriting, and later took creative control over the group, bringing in several guitarists to solidify a fusion sound. Half live and half studio album, Six will never interest classic-era stalwarts, but Jenkins and drummer John Marshall lead old-timers Mike Ratledge and Hugh Hopper through some nifty fusion exercises that fans of the genre (and obscure '70s music of every kind) might find very enjoyable. - Vincent Jeffries, AMG.
For me, they were still brilliant and by far, the best avant/jazz/rock band in England still. Karl Jenkins, once an integral member of Nucleus, brought a great deal to Soft Machine, when Ratledge felt little inspiration to compose for the band. The live set is phenomenal, with some incredible solos from Jenkins on oboe and bari sax and Marshall's drumming is simple astonishing. The studio album is much different, but equally amazing. Four long mesmerizing pieces, coming out of the Terry Riley school of repeating patterns, closer to the Softs's experiments on 'Third'. Hugh Hopper's '1983' is one of the most disturbing pieces of the Softs' grand history. - BLG

SOFT MACHINE - Seven [7] (Sony; Japan) [new 2004 remaster] This one features Mike Ratledge on organ, synth & electric piano, Karl Jenkins on oboe, bari & soprano saxes, recorder & electric piano, Roy Babbington on electric & acoustic basses and John Marshall on drums & percussion. Longtime Softs electric bassist Hugh Hopper finally departs after joining the band in 1969 on 'Volume Two'. He is replaced by an equally excellent bassist named Roy Babbington, who was the Softs' guest second (acoustic) bassist on 'Four'. Karl Jenkins takes over as the main composer, as well as playing second keyboards and providing superb solos on oboe, both saxes and a marvelous recorder solo. Their music is a fine blend of near-fusion jazz/rock and hypnotic, spaced-out, cerebral dreamy sequences. Ratledge's signature fuzz-organ playing is still featured in spots, yet it is mostly laidback and still quite enchanting. Side One ends with an incredibly cosmic, layered percussion & cymbals solo that reverberates with a most haunting ambiance. Recorded July '73 and released in 1974.

FAIRPORT CONVENTION - Heyday: BBC Sessions 1968-1969 (Island 290/UK) 2002 re-master. Originally issued in 1987 by Hannibal, this newer version adds 8 bonus tracks. All tracks broadcast on the BBC in '68/69. Featuring the line up of Denny, Thompson, Hutchings, Matthews, Nicol, Lamble. "Heyday captures the classic Fairport Convention line-up in session for John Peel's Top Gear program on BBC Radio 1 in 1968 and 1969. The band covers some of their favorite songs by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash and the Everly Brothers amongst others. The album is digitally re-mastered with eight bonus tracks from the same sessions. Formed in London in 1967, Fairport Convention were widely tipped to be the English Jefferson Airplane. Much against the advice of their longtime producer and mentor, Joe Boyd, the band recorded a string of cover versions for broadcast on the BBC. The fact that these songs were live favorites didn't cut it with Boyd. He felt that the band should concentrate on developing their own quintessentially English sound. The band overruled Boyd's objections and Heyday saw the light of day in 1987. 'Heyday' is a testament to the fact that Fairport Convention could do the West Coast American sound better than the Americans.

FAIRPORT CONVENTION - Angel Delight (Island 307/UK) New 2004 remastered edition with the bonus cut "A Journeyman's Grace" from a BBC session with Richard Thompson. Thompson exits the Fairport lineup, leaving the band reduced to a quartet of Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg, and Dave Mattacks on their 6th studio album. The loss of big guns Thompson and Denny was felt, but amazingly, although it isn't nearly as well known as 'Liege and Lief' or 'Full House', this record reached the highest chart position of any Fairport LP, making number eight in England. Swarbrick led the group in even more of a traditional British folk vein. By now everybody involved was singing (with Nicol and Swarbrick usually alternating on lead), and they managed to pull it off, mostly by virtue of the honesty of their voices and instrumental work almost as vital and animated as any in their history. From the beautifully sung and exciting opener "Lord Marlborough," the album should strike a responsive chord with any folk or folk-rock enthusiast--especially enjoyable are the singing on the buoyantly humorous title track and the viola/violin duet between Swarbrick and Nicol on "Bridge Over The River Ash." - Bruce Eder & William Ruhlmann, AMG

FAIRPORT CONVENTION - Babbacombe Lee (Island 308/UK) New 2004 re-mastered edition with 2 bonus cuts that appeared on the 1975 BBC program 'The Men They Couldn't Hang. The 7th studio production is the group's only concept album (similar in some ways to the Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow), built around the life story of John "Babbacombe" Lee, a Victorian-era condemned murderer. Lee's story, from his boyhood poverty to his time in the Royal Navy, his being invalided out and forced to work in the service of Miss Keyes, to her murder and his sentence of death, and the failure of the gallows three times, is told in song, and all but one of those songs are originals. The all-male Fairport seldom sang better, nor did the post-Thompson band ever play with more panache, and some of the songs are beautiful -- but a few are lugubrious, and as with most other concept albums, the fit between the songs and the larger subject ultimately isn't entirely comfortable for the listener. All of the material was confusing because the group, for some reason, never put titles on the individual songs, instead stringing them together in longer sections. The critics loved it, but the listeners stayed away in droves for the first time since the band's debut album.

FAIRPORT CONVENTION - Rosie (Island 309/UK) New 2004 re-mastered edition with 5 live bonus cuts from The Howff, London, 4/23/73. Simon Nicol, the last original member of Fairport, had departed by the time of this, the group's eighth album, replaced by two guitarists, Jerry Donahue and Trevor Lucas. The reconstituted band made a renewed effort at writing new material, the best of which was Dave Swarbrick's title tune (which featured ex-Fairporters Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson, and Thompson's future wife Linda Peters, as guests). - William Ruhlmann, AMG

PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED - First Issue CD (Virgin 87475/UK) UK-only issue of the legendary debut Public Image album, originally released by Virgin in 1978. Never issued in the US. John Lydon, Jah Wobble, Keith Levene, Jim Walker, at their 2nd best (1979's Second Edition was their unequivocal masterpiece). "One of the simplest notion in all of rock'n'roll -- repetition -- is what carries this highly combustive LP, fused together brightly with only the extremest elements of Krautrock, dub, and punk all in a 'Space Ritual' type racket. Recorded in September and issued December, 1978, the album was so repetitious and even more in your face than the Sex Pistols, journalists wrote this and subsequent P.I.L. albums off as 'anti-art', in a futile and utterly misread attempt to explain a sound so downright abrasive and previously unheard -- read as: unremembered. It was in no way, shape or form a prank, but for 1978, it was totally alien in its extremity, fuelled by the precise anger of Lydon's voice that manage to push the whole album at Mach whatever speed through innumerable red lights --about as much as the rhythm section, graced by the never-ending poise of Jah Wobble's bottomless dub bass and drummer Jim Walker's drum hits that resound like repeated gunshots in the dub-contained, airtight studio." Tracklisting: 'Theme', 'Religion 1', 'Religion 11', 'Annalisa', 'Public Image', 'Low Life', 'Attack', 'Fodderstompf'.

GANG OF FOUR - Entertainment! (EMI 32146/UK) UK-only issue (as released in 1995) of the first Gang of Four album, originally released in 1979. Includes the original 12 tracks plus 3 bonus tracks from the 1980 "Yellow" EP. "'Entertainment!' is an album born of frustration, of being boxed in, trapped, imprisoned and socially rejected. 'I'm so restless, I'm bored as a cat,' King repeats during 'Glass'. On '5.45', even watching the news is an excruciating ordeal: 'How can I sit and eat my tea with all that blood flowing from the television'. The sense of disgust is as profound and intense as that found in the pages of Jean-Paul Sartre's existentialist bible, Nausea, hallucinating to the point of delirium ('the red spot in the egg that looks like all the blood'). It's this very frustration ? both in the lyrics and the spiked, tautness of the music -- that gives the record its unique edge, Entertainment! is a compound of the despair one feels the moment before furniture is smashed and windows broken, as opposed to the more insular angst of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures released the same year. Never wallowing in its own negativity, it constantly demands a response, lines crying out like unavoidable 50-foot Situationist billboards: 'The problem of leisure, what to do for pleasure?' Entertainment! is a jab in the ribs, a boot up the listener's apathetic arse, a catalyst to absorb, to consider and then react to. In short, Entertainment! was an impossibly hard act to follow. Yet if it's any consolation, in the 21 years since it was first released, few bands have been able to boast such a near flawless first offering in terms of bite, spontaneity and bloody-minded courage. Gang Of Four's debut is, even by today's standards, an unparalled sensory assault. It still sneers. It still rages. God forbid, it still entertains." -- Simon Goddard.

YA HO WHA 13 - The Operetta (Swordfish 003; EEC) The psychedelic find of the decade is their long-lost final magnum opus. Rumored to exist for years-often put down as just rumor though. Here it is, unearthed from tapes thought lost forever but now found after nearly 30 years. This is the first thing to be released from Ya Ho Wha 13 since 1975. In the spring of 1975 the Family was homeless and was traveling on the West Coast after having been driven out of Hawaii by local laws (they would return later that year for what would be the final time with Father). Ya Ho Wha had taken a spontaneous journey to the East that had culminated in his initiation in the Great Pyramid of Egypt on Easter Sunday. Upon his return to the San Francisco area a warehouse in Corte Madeira was rented for the Family to gather for their Aquarian style morning meditations and meetings to greet the dawn. This is where The Operetta came down. It represents the first musical channeling from the time after Ya Ho Wha's Easter Resurrection in the Great Pyramid (returning transformed) and the last total musical recording he would make with the band. The six pieces which make up The Operetta form the culmination of all the Ya Ho Wha recordings -- thunderous percussion, massive psychedelic guitar swirlings are all vying for space with Ya Ho Wha's spontaneous chanting in this intense journey into inner self. This is the final and most incredible of all their creations.
