THE HEATWAVE CONTINUES for 7/11/03!!
w/ 3 from TZADIK, plus PEARLS from DUNMALL, BROTZMANN, SANCHEZ,
LUSSIER, BUTCHER!!

JOHN ZORN - The Unknown Masada/Volume 3 (Tzadik 7181) Fourteen
incredible unheard Masada pieces featuring Erik Friedlander, Dave
Douglas, Wadada Leo Smith, Eyvind Kang, Jamie Saft, Tatsuya Yoshida
(from Ruins), Fantomas, Naftule's Dream, Rashanim (Jon Madof Trio),
Julian Kytasty, Zahava Seewald and Koby Israelite. Mr. Friedlander
tells us that when Zorn whips out a previously unplayed Masada piece
from the vast (about 210) catalogue of tunes for one of the Masada
bands to play and that don't get it right, he tosses the music into
the back of the songbook for another attempt in the future. At this
point, only about 120 tunes of the Masada songbook has been recorded,
leaving quite a bit of material to be left in limbo. 'The Unknown
Masada' features fourteen diverse versions of those unrecorded gems.
Friedlander doubles on mandolin and cello with his great Quake
quartet on "Kinyan", adding more exotic spice to his usual middle
eastern vibe. My man, Jon Madof, wails on electric guitar with his
great trio on "Olamim", adding some powerful and nasty lines, which
he also did so well guesting with Electric Masada last Friday at
Tonic. Dave Douglas doubles on electric piano and uses two saxes
(Greg Tardy & Zorn) to make "Vehuel" a multi-layered gem. Of course,
Tatsuya from Ruins, does a nifty, rather Magma-esque version of
"Shofetim" with twisted layers of synth, silly operatic vocals and
prog drums. Naftule's Dream sound more traditional on "Partzuf",
which they turn inside out. Jamie Saft also twists "Zarach" into an
odd blend of dub, heavy guitar and mysterious exotica. Vocalist
Zahava Seewald does a haunting and lush version of "Shagal", always a
treat to hear a vocal version of a Masada tune and the blend of
accordion and concertina is especially wonderful. Both Koby
Israelite and Fantomas do ridiculously over-the-top punk/metal/jazz
or indescribably cool versions, while Julian Kytasty plays his superb
nimble multi-stringed bandura on "Kadmut" to great success. Leo
Smith and Ikue Mori do a mesmerizing, dreamy rendition of "Demai",
while Eyvind Kang ends this excellent tribute with a sort-of somber,
near-psychedelic Beatles-like brew of "Belimah". A completely
splendid delight!
CD release for $14.

JOHN ZORN - Filmworks XIV Hiding and Seeking (Tzadik 7343) Featuring
Marc Ribot on classical guitar, Kenny Wollesen on vibes, Trevor Dunn
on acoustic bass, Cyro Baptista on percussion and Ganda Suthivarakom
on vocals. This is Zorn's fifth Jewish documentary that he has
scored in the past five years. 'Hiding and Seeking' is directed by
Oren Rudavsky and deals with "an Orthodox Jewish father who drags his
two sons with him to Poland in search of his roots, with both tragic
and hilarious results". Zorn put together an exquisite all acoustic
quartet with some guest vocals by Gunda who sings with Smokey & Miho
(from Cibo Matto). Zorn has written some extremely lovely,
exquisitely pure and elegant melodies for this enchanting soundtrack.
Ribot is in especially fine form here, playing with restraint and
taste. This music is a lovely blend of Jewish melodies with subtle
Latin rhythms. It is great to hear Kenny playing some fine vibes
throughout, something we rarely hear from this ubiquitous drummer.
There are many memorable melodies and a number of repeating themes
which run through this entire cd, making it an enticing delight from
beginning to the end. A perfect gift for any of (y)our loved ones,
no matter their age.
CD release for $14.

MILTON BABBITT - Occasional Variations (Tzadik 7088) "For nearly
sixty years, Mr. Babbitt has been pushing the boundaries of
contemporary classical music with his unique world of sound, form and
color". For his debut on Tzadik, Mr. Babbitt delivers two
extraordinary string quartets, a solo work for guitar and his rare
electronic masterpiece, which is the title track. Commencing with
the first recording of his challenging "String Quartet No. 6" from
1993, we find some provocative, thorny, dense in bursts, intricate,
sharp, multi-layered, inter-connected, varied textures, shifting
patterns, stark and eerie to vibrant and mysterious. Babbitt's
"String Quartet No. 2" from 1952 is less extreme, yet just as
fascinating, less brittle and more cautious, even calm in places.
"Composition for Guitar" is from 1984 and features William Anderson
on classical guitar. This work also navigates between a variety of
textures, densities, colors and patterns. Much of this is more
restrained and even calm at times. The title piece, "Occasional
Variations", is the one electronic work and it is another engaging
piece for kaleidoscopic sounds which seem to move organically, never
too abrupt or difficult. CD release for $14.

ANGELICA SANCHEZ - Mirror Me (Omnitone 12203) Featuring Tony Malaby
on tenor sax, his wife Angie on piano and compositions, Michael
Formanek on double bass and Tom Rainey on drums. The Stones
(Stephanie & Irving) were the first to sing the praises of pianist
Angelica Sanchez and her splendid quartet. I had already heard
Angie's partner Tony Malaby, local tenor sensation, with a number of
fine bands led by Tim Berne and Mark Helias, as well as Tony's own
unit plus the recent co-led quartet with Louie Belogenis. This is
Angie's debut as a leader and it is certainly a sublime and
stimulating surprise. She balances the extremes of taste and touch
with the opening of "Fresh Hell", with her harp-like flourishes and
Tony's dreamy, rather flute-like tone of his tenor sax. When the
rhythm finally enter, they all swirl together in a somber flutter of
spirited waves. I dig the way Angie's solo evolves from dense to
sparse and especially the magical weaving of rhythmic threads by the
fabulous Tom Rainey. The other wonderful thing about this entire
endeavor is the way Angie often brings out Tony's more lyrical side.
These pieces are consistently fascinating in the way are structured,
but never difficult to listen to, never about swinging too hard, but
the mysterious way they move or work. The title track stretches out
time and notes drift by slowly, yet the thread that holds it together
flows subliminally underneath. I swear I hear Tony playing haunting
flute above Tom's hypnotic mallet work, but it just the cautious tone
of his tenor once again. The quartet is often split between two
different yet inter-connected sections, the piano trio moves in one
direction, but changes (tempo) when the sax appears. It seems to me
that a great deal of work went into this superb work, since there is
so much craft to the way each piece works, flows and surprises us on
many levels. With some time, this wonderful mystery will be revealed.
CD release for $15.

RENE LUSSIER - Tambolo Rasa (La Tribu 21570) Featuring Rene & Bernard
Falaise on guitars, Bernard Buisson on piano, Pierre Langevin &
Robert Lepage on clarinets, Jean Rene on alto sax, Tom Walsh on
trombone, Normand Guilbeault on contrabass and Alain Lamontagne on
percussion. Along with his old musical associate Jean Derome, guitar
hero and composer Rene Lussier is the most consistently successful
and diverse musician to emerge from the Montreal scene in the past
two decades. I treasure all of his great releases on the Ambiances
Magnetiques label and now that he has moved to another label, we can
look forward to more of his gems. 'Tombola Rasa' is his first
(serious?) effort for a large (9 piece) ensemble that he has had in a
while and it opened this year's Victo festival to much deserved
praise. Obviously a great deal of work went into this 56 minute
piece, as it covers a lot of different ground, yet flows organically
from section to sections. Sounds like Rene is bowing his trusty old
daxophone at the beginning or is it a bagpipe (sample?), either way
it is a mysterious way to begin our journey. Distant, brooding heavy
and acoustic guitars blend with that enchanting bagpipe sound, a
joyous intro. Rene plays some marvelous acoustic guitar and
foot-patter on the lovely, fairytale title tune. There is a certain
goofy, folky and playful charm that runs through much of this, making
it an endearing, timeless treasure. The one element that runs
through most of this cd is Rene's quietly amplified foot tapping,
which adds a down-home quality. There are moments when I am reminded
of Fred Frith's twisted charm, but this is not so strange, since they
have worked together on many occasions. Rene's quirky sense of humor
and the infectious, uplifting and hopeful inner grace make this a
particularly gracious journey, with occasional and unexpected
surprises well seasoned along the way.
There is little U.S. distribution for this Montreal based label, so
order this soon!
CD for $16.

PAUL DUNMALL - solo bagpipes [volume 3] (FMR 118) Our good friend and
sax god for (Keith Tippett's) Mujician, Paul Dunmall is certainly a
rare gem among other British musical giants. Besides being one the
most the finest and most consistent of all European avant sax greats,
he has become one of the few amazing improvisers on bagpipes. An odd
instrument with way too much cultural and historical baggage attached
for most people to appreciate without any prejudice. For Mr.
Dunmall, it is merely another instrument to improvise his magical
(often drone-based) sounds upon. The incredibly prolific Dunmall has
recently unleashed his 30th cd on his own Duns label (over the past
five years) and has recorded for Slam, FMP, Emanem, Cuneiform,
Hatology and the difficult to find FMR on occasion. And word is, he
is also a guest on the new ECM cd from Robin Williamson. Does this
cat ever rest? I think not. So here we go with his third solo
bagpipes cd.

On this wonderful studio date, he plays Gaida, Northumberland
and border bagpipes. That disturbing cosmic drone bursts open on
"Iredel" as he twists those reeds into some scary patterns, the
stream of notes sputters, squeals and erupts with a mesmerizing
intensity. "Chantanopop" slowly bends the pleading drone into a
strange, lonely and dark quivering stream, rather snake-charmer like.
On "Eiegara", he breaks up the quick changing drone with fractured
silences, before the tempo spins into high gear and the stream
becomes more intense. Things finally slow down on "Shawbaccandied",
while "SamaliDradan" sounds almost traditional with its Scottish vibe
during the first and final sections, followed by some kaleidoscopic
twisting and turning in the middle. Concluding with "Bygandron"
which is quite haunting as the shimmering drone slowly moves in waves
that wash over us in a sea of gently unnerving bliss.
CD only release found on the hard to locate & limited FMR label for a mere $14.

ASANA 3 - Peacful Heart (Meta Records 15) Exceptionally beautiful
music is made when everyone puts their heart and soul into a project,
and certainly we've come to expect nothing less where any Janet
Rienstra project is involved for her Meta label. Her main musical
buddy Bill Laswell is especially heavily involved in this one, in
which she and he have brought together Asha Puthli (a subcontinent
vocalist of the 70's possibly known to some of you for her
collaboration with Ornette and for the Dario Argento soundtrack she
made with Goblin - or possibly even for her off kilter Euro
soul/disco albums!), Pharoah Sanders, Grandmixer DXT, Karsh Kale, and
Robert Musso, who contributes a stunning 8 minute piece on which he
played all instruments, as does Laswell on one of the three long
pieces he composed for this (it sounds like Indian Reggae) - on a
fourth written by DXT Laswell plays guitar producing a sitar voicing,
while DXT does a call/response chant with a Damita Miles vocal
phrase! And the last track pairs the string talents of Nicky
Skopelitis and Laraaji (on electric zither) while Pharaoh blissfully
blows straight to your heart! Technology used organically - never
getting in the way - I didn't think it could be so good! Very
recommended - Mannylunch . (In stock this Tuesday) CD for $14

BROTZMANN/BORGMANN/PARKER/BAKR - The Cooler Suite (Grob 539)
Featuring Peter Brotzmann and Thomas Borgmann on tenor saxes, William
Parker on acoustic bass, Rashied Bakr on drums and was recorded live
at the now defunct Cooler on the west side of 14th St. Thomas
Borgmann is another unsung sax hero from Germany, who has recorded
three fine trio cds with Wilber Morris and Dennis Charles, a trio
date with Brotzmann and another trio date with Anthony Braxton and
Borah Bergman. He can blow up a storm like his fellow German sax
hero, Peter Brotzmann and here goes to match wits with this amazing
all-star quartet. Mind-blowing, as expected!! CD release for $15.

ALLEN/DRAKE/JORDAN/PARKER/SILVA - the all-star game (Eremite
044) Recorded live at the ICA Theatre in Boston in December of 2000
and featuring a truly stellar free/jazz line-up with Marshall Allen
on alto sax, Kidd Jordan on tenor sax, William Parker & Alan Silva on
contrabasses and Hamid Drake on drums. That two bass buzz seem to
make certain projects all the more special. What began with Coltrane
in the early sixties, has inspired other future bands like Soft
Machine (Four) and London Jazz Composers Orchestra, as well as bass
duos, from Marks Dresser & Helias, Peter Kowald & William Parker to
Ken Filiano & Francois Grillot, who played a fine set here at DMG
last Sunday (7/6/03). 'the all-star game' begins with the buzzin'
basses of two masters - Alan Silva and William Parker, the energy and
creative free spirit escalates from there. This is of course an
immense display of high flying eruptions and explosions. Hamid is
the perfect, righteous partner to balance both basses and both saxes,
spinning waves of percussive intensity, as both saxes spew their fire
music lines higher and higher, reaching together for stars. Both
saxes take their time to unleash their jagged lines, Kidd will
stretch his notes out at slower pace as Marshall sputters quicker
fractured notes above, the rhythm team balancing the opposites, a
complex cushion in between connecting all five players. There is a
constant, but slowly evolving shifting of interplay, as different
combinations work through varied sub-groups. There is special
organic flow that moves in waves of densities, at times somber and
reflective, before ascending to more explosive sections. At 75 _
minutes, this is a long and remarkably exciting exchange and remains
mind-blowing throughout. CD only release for $14.

JEMEEL MOONDOC & DENIS CHARLES - we don't (Eremite 043) This is a
previously unreleased studio date from July of 1981 featuring Jemeel
on alto sax and the late, great Denis on drums. Although downtown
alto sax wiz, Jemeel Moondoc has been recording since the 70's, he
recorded rarely in the 80's and thanks to Eremite, Ayler & Cadence,
there has been a surge of great releases over the past decade. Even
more poorly documented, Denis Charles' career stretches all the way
back to the fifties, when he played with Cecil Taylor, but seems to
appear on only a handful of available recordings. Denis has always
sounds great in duo encounters, great cds with Billy Bang and Susie
Ibarra come to mind. Jemeel also sounds great in duo and trio
encounters and these make up most of his more recently recorded
works. The title cut here opens and is a traditional tune. Denis
has a distinctive, propulsive, dancing, spinning flow that gives
Jemeel the freedom to soar along with him, both locked in together,
connected and spiraling upwards into the void. Denis' solo is a
marvel of high spirited rhythmic invention and immensely fun to
listen to. The duo slow things down for the haunting dream world of
"home", there is a seamless balance as both players cautiously move
together, building in intensity as they weave their lines, weaving an
intricate tapestry. "judy's bounce" seems aptly titled since it does
bounce, jump and sing with a joyous groove and memorable opening
theme. Even without a bass player to hold down the pulse, Denis does
a fine job of keeping the bass groove flowing with his bass drums as
he dances on top of the other drums and cymbals, making every note
and beat count. The final piece, "we do", is a tight, quick spinning
flight, where Jemeel and Denis soar together like majestic birds in a
frenzied chorus. They often sound on the verge of exploding, yet
remain as one solid force fluttering together. Whoa! Eremite does
it again!
CD only release for $14.

CHRIS LIGHTCAP QUARTET - bigmouth (Fresh Sound NT 148) Featuring Tony
Malaby and Bill McHenry on tenor saxes, Chris on bass & compositions
and Gerald Cleaver on drums. This is local contrabassist Chris
Lightcap's second quartet date for the Fresh Sound label and it was
actually released last year, but due to spotty distribution, we have
only gotten copies in recently. This is most unfortunate since the
NY Times continues to give praise to this great label which
specializes in NY's new more mainstream young jazz lions and we often
can't get copies to sell. We have been singing the praises for Tony
Malaby, who works with Angie Sanchez, Tim Berne and Louie Belogenis,
as well as Gerald Cleaver who works with Matt Shipp, for the past few
years. Dee Pop has been telling me great things about Bill McHenry,
the Times and Voice also spreading the good word, he gets a high
profile gig with Paul Motian last week at the Village Vanguard for
the JVC Fest. His third cd for Fresh Sound has just been released
and can we get copies to sell? Hell no! Pretty f**king sad. Which
brings us to Chris' 'bigmouth' releaseS
On "Neptune 66", Chris has written a joyous, quick paced,
dancing theme which has both tenors swirling together with elegant
abandon. Both have strong, smooth, yet dark tones and play warmly
together. This a mostly laid back affair with both saxes playing
nicely together. Chris has written a number of lush, harmonious
tunes which sound rich and endearing, but never too adventurous or
out. On "celebratorial", the tempo rushes forward as the rhythm team
simmers quickly, pushing both saxes to spin quickly and play short
exciting solos, but it is the bass and drums which solo and soar
together intensely. The one cover might seem like an odd choice, the
Beatles' "dig a pony", but it is a done with a fine swaggering spirit
and feels just right. I dig the way Chris composes these somewhat
gnarly pieces which are centered around the constant motion of the
rhythm team's swirling force, often keeping both tenors on the toes
navigating the rapid currents. There is strong balance of slower
tunes with rich harmonies for the saxes and quick paced songs with
more daredevil playing for the entire quartet. CD release for $15.

ANDERS GAHNOLD/JOHNNY DYANI/GILBERT MATTHEWS TRIO - flowers for
johnny (Ayler Records 017/018) This superb two cd set features
Swedish alto saxist Anders' great trio in concert from October of
1983 and September of 1985. You should recall Mr. Gahnold from
another more recent trio date with William Parker also on Ayler,
which was listed under William's name as the leader, but he tells us
that this wasn't the case, it is a fine trio date no matter what.
Both Manny and myself, as well many of our friends are big fans for
anything from the legendary South African band - the Blue Notes, as
well as the large band they turned into, the Brotherhood of Breath,
when they moved to London in the mid-sixties. Each member of the
Blue Notes was gifted in their own way and sadly only their drummer
Louis Moholo remains with us. It is wonderful that interest in these
legends continues to grow, as we nearly sold out of the Ogun vinyl
mentioned in last week's newsletter. Ogun is the label started by
Brotherhood of Breath bassist Harry Miller and now run by his widow
Hazel, it is a grand label featuring these South African giants, only
a handful of their records have become cds. So, the search for long
lost gems from these players remains activeS
Blue Notes bass wonder, Johnny Dyani, moved to Copenhagen in
1972 and worked with Pierre Dorge's Orchestra, as well as traveling
and playing with musicians throughout Europe, from Dollar Brand to
Joseph Jarman & Don Moye to Don Cherry. Chris McGregor was the
leader of the Blue Notes as well the Brotherhood of Breath. Gilbert
Matthews was the last drummer in McGregor's trio before Chris passed
away, as well as a later member of the Brotherhood. Swedish alto
saxist, Anders Gahnold was honored to work with Johnny Dyani for a
few years before Johnny's passing in 1986. This two cd set captures
two very special concerts by the superb trio. The first disc is from
October of 1983 and what an amazing trio this is. Johnny's
contrabass pumps hard and profusely as Anders sails high and wide, a
beautiful tone with no screaming or squealing needed. The rhythm
team is incredible throughout, weaving layers of lines in a joyous,
melodic and awe-inspiring way! This was a radio broadcast, hence the
sound and balance are just perfect. There is a constant pulse here,
a never-ending push and pull, it is well connected, so it never
sounds completely free and probably a great introduction to those
warming up to freer explorations without going too far out. The
second concert from September of 1985 is only 33 minutes long, so the
entire two cd set clocks in at around 100 minutes, but remains
completely engrossing from the beginning to the end. This is
certainly one of the year's best sets so far and comes very highly
recommended! 2 CD set for $26.

BUTCHER, MOOR & LEHN - Thermal (Unsounds 04) 'Thermal' is a set of
improvisations by John Butcher, Andy Moor and Thomas Lehn. Taking
the sonic possibilities of their respective instruments (saxophones,
electric guitar & EMS synth) through surprising and playful avenues,
this is an exquisite example of the meeting of three experienced
improvisers, each bringing to this exchange the perspective of their
mixed musical backgrounds. Andy Moor is known for his long time
association with the EX , Kletka Red and Dog Faced Hermans, he has a
original vibrant style of guitar playing and in recent years has
collaborated with many musicians in the improvised music scene. John
Butcher is one of the most highly respected saxophone players of our
time, as a solo artist he performs worldwide and is associated with
musicians such as Fred Frith, Misha Mengelberg and Derek Bailey.
Thomas Lehn has an individual style of musical expression that is
rooted in the experience of a broad spectrum of musical fields that
encompasses contemporary classical music and new electronic
improvisation. The electronic equipment he uses consists of analogue
synthesizers of the late 1960s. He is associated with musicians such
as Gerry Hemingway and Marcus Schmickler, Eugene Chadbourne and Mimeo
amongst many others. CD release for $16.

MAURICIO KAGEL - Rrrrrrr (Aeon 0311) This features new versions of
Kagel's classics "Rrrrrrr" (1980/1), "Ludwig Van" (1969), "Der Eid
des Hippokrates (1984), "Unguis Incarnatus est" (1972) and "MM 51"
(1976) and is performed by Alexander Tharaud on piano and others.
Mauricio Kagel, born in Buenos Aires in 1931, is one of today's most
distinctive composers. Over the course of his career, Kagel's
creative output has been enormous. It encompasses not only stage,
orchestral and chamber music, but also film scores, radio plays and
essays. Throughout its broad spectrum, his music eschews any and all
forms of academicism as well as close ties to tradition, especially
to the German tradition. Imagination, originality and humor are the
hallmarks of this multimedia artist. With inexhaustible powers of
invention, Kagel makes use of a very wide array of expressive devices
which, although often caustic and highly provocative, are always
placed in the service of musical discourse. An outstanding soloist
as well as a fine chamber musician, pianist Alexandre Tharaud has
developed an enviable reputation for his interpretations of French
repertoire. Joined by a fine collection of fellow musicians, this
album of chamber music makes a fine introduction to the music of
Kagel. Import CD only release for $18.

ALVIN LUCIER - Navigations for Strings/Small Waves (Mode 124)
"Navigations for Strings" is for string quartet, trombone, piano and
two water pourers and is performed by the Arditti Quartet, Hildegard
Kleeb and Roland Dahinden. Alvin Lucier (born 1931) has been a
pioneer in many areas of music composition and performance, including
the notation of performers' physical gestures, the use of brain waves
in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by sound in
vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical
purposes. "Navigations for Strings" (1991) consists of four tunes,
for which a long stream of continually changing melodic and
instrumental combinations occur. In "Small Waves" (1997), six glass
vessels, some partially filled with water, are mounted on pedestals
scattered around the performance space. Microphones are inserted
into the mouths of the vessels, then routed through corn
compressor-limiters to amplifiers and monitor speakers. During the
course of the performance, the volume levels of the amplifiers are
raised and lowered, causing feedback at pitches determined by the
size and shape of the containers and their proximity to the
loudspeakers. Both works are remarkable microtonal musical
experiences.
CD only release for $15.

THIGHPAULSANDRA - Double Vulgar (Retractor 001) 'Double Vulgar' is
the latest release from Thighpaulsandra and continues the voyage of
strange sonic discovery and juxtaposition started on 'I
Thighpaulsandra' in 2000 and strays further from the paths trodden by
his brothers in Coil and Spiritualized. On 'Double Vulgar', the
ensemble performance is brought to the fore. Thighpaulsandra has
marshaled his collaborators into a vital and efficient unit. Dorothy
Lewis, Martin Schellard, Siôn Orgon and the Boy Anal steer an obscure
and sometimes perilous course slipping seamlessly between complex
arrangements, chemical fuelled improvisation, hard electronics and
joyful glam ejaculation. There are also guest appearances from John
Balance, Ossian Brown and Cliff Stapleton. The controversial cover
is by Peter Christopherson.
CD release for $17.

JUST A FEW HISTORIC RECORDINGS, REISSUES & RESTOCKS FROM:

SUSSAN DEYHIM/RICHARD HOROWITZ - Desert Equations: Azax Attra
(Crammed 111) Finally this super-classic of 2 decades ago has been
re-released on CD.again and we'll be able to take care of the
mile-long waiting list we've had for this item! It's previous CD
release of a decade ago was flawed (skipping on several tracks in
most players) and Crammed never issued a corrected edition at the
time. But about the record now: Know that this Album was the
shocking introduction for most everybody to the extreme vocal talents
and musical sensibilities of Iranian-born Sussan and her [now]
longtime collaborator, composer, synthesist and master of many middle
eastern and Asian wind instruments including the ney, Mr. Richard
Horowitz, who's also scored a long list of film work internationally
including 'The Sheltering Sky'. Imagine dark and lonely terrains
vaguely "ethnic/middle eastern" with voices sometimes banshee-like,
sometimes demonically whispering, sometimes beautifully singing an
abstract melody. I can't stress how amazing this album is even now,
almost 20 years later. My nearest reference point at the time was
Diamanda Galas, as in a similar way Richard's music touched on
similar areas with Jon Hassell, with whom he several times
collaborated, but I was so mmuch younger then...! Her appearances are
infrequent, as are releases, but it's appropriate that we've finally
gotten restocks on this just now, as Sussan will be performing next
Wed. July 16th at Joe's Pub for 2 shows, 7 PM and 9:30 PM with
Richard Horowitz, joined by Karsh Kale and Will Calhoun.
CD for $17 (also available on LP for $10)

Also restocked:

SUSSAN DEYHIM - Madman Of God: Divine Songs Of The Persian Sufi
Masters (Crammed) w/Glenn Velez, Reggie Workman, Will Calhoun, Karsh
Kale, Reza Derekshani.
CD for $17

SUSSAN DEYHIM/BILL LASWEL - Shy Angels (Crammed) a reconstruction and
mix translation of the Madman Of God album by Laswell, who has added
himself (on bass, natch') as well as Karsh Kale, Zakir Hussain, Hamid
Drake, Abegasu Shiota, Aiyb Dieng and Abdou Mboup onto the original
recordings. Lovingly done, and a wonderful alternate experience of
this Deyhim masterpiece!
CD for $17

JOE HARRIOTT/JOHN MAYER DOUBLE QUINTET - Indo-Jazz Fusions 1 & 2
(Redial 538 048) Jamaican born & British based alto sax legend Joe
Harriott was one of the first modern jazz musicians to successfully
blend jazz and Indian music into a phenomenal new hybrid in 1966. He
was also an unsung hero whose first recordings from 1962 showed the
future fire of modern jazz, rivaling the ground-breaking early work
of Ornette, Dolphy and Trane, from the same period. After a handful
of amazing recordings from his incredible quintet with Shake Keane on
trumpet from '62 to '66, he organized a double quintet which featured
the mostly Indian instrumentation of sitar, violin, flute, tambura
and tabla. After a series of successful and influential concerts
starting in 1966, he recorded the double quintet's 'Indo-Jazz Fusion
I' in 1967 and 'Indo-Jazz Fusion II' in 1968 with Kenny Wheeler
featured in the trumpet chair. The first one was actually released
in the US and enjoyed moderate success. This mid-priced import cd
reissue includes both volumes and it still stands as a long lost
treasure. Violinist and occasional harpsichord player, John Mayer
wrote most of the music here and it is based on popular ragas of the
time, but combines the best of both worlds. The Indian quintet sets
the stage, with their shimmering sitar, tambura, tabla, harpsichord
and flute, soon Joe's spirited alto sax enters with the elegantly
swinging rhythm section and begins trading lines with Shake's equally
effervescent trumpet. When the tempo increases midway the violin and
sitar start spinning their lines together in a breathless display of
wonder. There is a certain calm, cool and reflective nature to this
music, which makes it dazzling without being too intense. Joe
Harriott and Shake Keane are most inspired, throwing lines back and
forth with a carefree amount of effort. The sitar work of Diwan
Motihar is also pretty amazing as well. I remember hearing this on
an album in the early seventies and being knocked out by it then, it
still sounds most impressive some thirty plus years later! Complete
two album set on a single import CD for $14.

DAVID MOSS DENSE BAND - "Live in Europe" (Ear-Rational 1004)
Featuring Christian Marclay on turntables, Wayne Horvitz on synths,
Jon Rose on mutant-cello & violin, Jean Chaine on el. bass and David
Moss on drums & vocals and recorded at Musique Action in May of 1987.
I recall the wonderfully weird drummer/vocalist from the early days
of the downtown scene when he played duos with Fred Frith, drummed in
the original Golden Palominoes and organized the sensational Dense
Band, which evolved through various incarnations, with different
downtown all-stars. Nowadays, Mr. Moss, lives in Berlin, rarely
drums, has his own vocal quintet (one of the highlights of this
year's Victo fest) and sings with a number modern classical
ensembles, performing Heiner Goebbels and Frank Zappa. We just a
found a handful of these long out-of-print Dense Band cds and they
are a treat. Jean Chaine was always an amazing el. bassist with
great technique and lots of sounds, perfect for matching wits with
endless stream of drums and crazed vocals from David Moss. Moss and
Chaine would often set up intricate patterns together so that other
could solo on top. Wayne's synth, Jon's cello and Christian's
turntables provide an endless supply of odd textures and spirited
solos. I haven't heard that old fuzz keyboard that Wayne used so
well later in the President, but it does sound great here. There are
even moments of avant-funk when Jean starts slapping his bass and
Moss sings some hilarious vocal insanity. Most of these pieces are
focused with a structural thread that runs through each and not just
free improv and are loads of fun. A most worthy gem for that
downtown complete-ist, we only have a few. Limited quantity CD for
$16.

NEW YORK NOISE - Dance Music From the New York Underground (Soul Jazz
77) Features the cream of New York's punk-funk bands from the early
80s. Bands such as ESG, Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, Arthur Russell's
'Dinosaur l' etc - all bands that have had a huge influence on the
current wave of New York groups such as The Rapture, Metro Area, The
Liars, The Strokes, etc. 'New York Noise' sums up the point where
dance music and punk rock first met. It features New York no wave
artists such as DNA, Glenn Branca, Bush Tetras, etc alongside New
York dance music's experimental pioneers such as Arthur Russell
(Dinosaur l), Bill Laswell (Material), Konk and Joe Bowie's funk/jazz
classic group Defunkt. Two more classic ESG tracks (not featured on
any of the earlier Soul Jazz-ESG releases), Jean Michael Basquiat's
classic production of the proto-electro-hip-hop classic 'Beat BOP' as
well as super rare New York artists such as the dance, and the
bloods. Featuring exclusive photos, text and super audio pressing
this is the latest musical journey by Soul Jazz records and another
essential release. The artists include: Liquid Liquid, ESG, Konk,
The Dance, Material, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Rahmelzee vs K.Rob, Bush
Tetras, Glenn Branca, The Bloods, Dinosaur l, Theoretical Girls,
James White and The Blacks, Defunkt and Mars.
UK import CD release for $16 & 2LP set version for $18.
