RELEASES NEW & OLD FOR THEM POST-THANKSGIVING DAY BLUES - TRANSMISSION ON NOVEMBER 29th, 2002 1. STEVE LACY - 10 of Dukes
+ 6 Originals (Senators Records 01) An immensely splendid and wonderfully
recorded live solo performance from the Egg Farm in Japan in October
of 2000. Our favorite soprano sax master was invited to play an Ellington
Anniversary Celebration in San Francisco the previous year, which inspired
him to choose challenging gems from the Duke's vast repertoire and experiment
with a variety of techniques he hadn't previously used to tackle these
tunes. After that special night, he performed sets around the world
doing what he calls the "10 of Dukes", an entire set of Duke's
gems. The following year Mr. Lacy did this performance in Japan, the
first set of Ellington treasures and the second set of six Lacy originals.
The second set's songs were inspired by that of writings of Herman Melville,
Jack Kerouac, Bob Kaufman, Ryokan and a joyous blues piece inspired
by Stevie Wonder. An obvious love of Duke Ellington's remarkable music
is at the center of the first set's magical performance, this is certainly
some of Steve Lacy's finest playing I've heard. This incredible limited
edition CD only release has no domestic (or international!) distribution
and can only be purchased from your good friends here at DMG. 2. DON CHERRY - Don Cherry
[aka Orient] (Fruit Tree 825) Extremely rare, much sought after and
marvelous sessions featuring two trios: one with the late contrabass
legend Johnny Dyani (Blue Notes, Brotherhood of Breath) and Okay Temiz,
the legendary Turkish percussion master on "Eagle Eye Part 1 &
2" and "Togetherness", recorded in Paris on April 22nd;
the other trio features legendary Dutch drummer Han Bennink with Mocqui
on tamboura on "Orient Part 1 & 2" and "Si Ta Ra
Ma" recorded in Carpentras, France on August 11th, '71 -- and world
traveler, free-spirited pocket trumpet god and multi-instrumentalist
(piano, dousangooni and vocals) Don Cherry fronting both trios! These
are amazing live recordings are from France and originally released
as an ultra-rare BYG double album in Japan only (and one UK pressing
in the late 70s titled Orient). Original Japanese release artwork The
CD contains all material from the LP set uninterrupted. 3. DON CHERRY - Blue Lake
(Fruit Tree 826) Extremely rare and sought after recordings featuring
Don Cherry on trumpets, piano, dousangooni and vocals with the late
contrabass legend Johnny Dyani (Blue Notes, Brotherhood of Breath) and
Okay Temiz, the legendary Turkish percussion master; and we believe
(though you can't tell from the original Japanese text replicated here)
Dollar Brand [Abdullah Ibrahim] makes it a quartet on "Dollar's
Tune" ! These are amazing live recordings from 1971, and previous
to this ONLY released as an ultra-rare BYG double album in Japan. Original
Japanese release artwork, high quality 2 LP set. The CD contains all
5 cuts from the LP set uninterrupted. (So when is somebody gonna release Don's Organic Music Society on CD?!?!?!)
HALF DOZEN + RELEASES FROM OUR FAVORITE BRITISH GIANTS: 6. EVAN PARKER/BARRY GUY/PAUL
LYTTON - At Les Instants Chavirés (PSI 02.06) Live recordings
from the famous club in Montreuil, France made in 1997. 71 minutes of
previously unissued, incredible and intense improvisations from one
of the greatest British trios featuring Evan Parker on tenor & soprano
saxophones, Barry Guy on contrabass and Paul Lytton on drums/percussion.
7. EVAN PARKER & GEORGE
LEWIS - From Saxophone & Trombone (PSI 02.04) Their first fabulous
duo recording made in 1980 and finally reissued. Two giants on their
respective horns, one British legend of saxophone multiphonic explorations
and the other an AACM all-star trombone master, composer and professor. 9. PAUL RUTHERFORD - Chicago
2002 (Emanem 4082) Rutherford's appearance at the Empty Bottle Festival
was his first visit to America apart from two previous tours in orchestra
situations only. His superb 31 minute trombone solo shows him still
to be at the top of his game, with a few incredible solo trombone efforts
already under his belt. The following day he was asked to organize a
septet with Jeb Bishop (trombone), Lol Coxhill (soprano saxophone),
Mats Gustafsson (tenor saxophone), Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello & electronics),
Kent Kessler (double bass) and Kjell Nordeson (percussion). They performed
a concerto featuring the wonderful Lol Coxhill and a free improvisation.
77 minutes and all previously unissued. 10. CHRIS BURN ENSEMBLE -
Horizontals White (Emanem 4080) The whole of two totally improvised
performances from London's Red Rose and Conway Hall with Chris Burn
(piano & percussion), John Butcher (soprano & tenor saxophones),
Mark Wastell (cello), John Russell (guitar) and Matt Hutchinson (synthesizer
& electronics) and Rhodri Davies (harp). A smaller ensemble than
on their three previous CDs, but sounding larger at times. Each release
by the Chris Burn Ensemble has blown me away and this is one is also
amazing British improv at its finest! 58 minutes long and previously
unissued. 11. ROGER SMITH - Spanish
Guitar (Emanem 4083) The long awaited reissue of Roger Smith's 1980
LP which finds his distinctive acoustic guitar improvising fully formed.
Also included are some previously unissued solos from the 1990s recorded
at three very different gigs, which show his prowess to be even better.
A great reissue with extra unreleased material and nearly 70 minutes
in length. 12. ROLAND RAMANAN - Shaken
(Emanem 4081) Trumpeter Roland Ramanan (who doubles on wooden flutes)
has been quietly enriching the London scene for some 15 years now. For
the first CD under his leadership, he presents his imaginative current
quartet which spans the ground between Free Improvisation and Free Jazz.
With two of England's finest string improvisers - Marcio Mattos on cello
& electronics, Simon H. Fell on double bass and the ever-amazing
Mark Sanders on drums & percussion. 72 minutes long and all previously
unissued. 13. LUNGE - Strong Language
(Emanem 4079) The second strong release by this talented improvising
quartet which features Gail Brand on trombone, Phil Durrant doing electronics
and acoustic violin, Pat Thomas playing electronics and acoustic piano
and Mark Sanders on percussion. The whole of their superb 2002 Amsterdam
Bimhuis concert is included, augmented by two studio tracks from 2000.
61 minutes and all previously unissued. 14. MEL GRAVES - Ear Shot/The
Music of Mel Graves (mutable 17510) I've known of west coast contrabass
great Mel Graves since his work with Jerry Hahn and Denny Zeitlin in
the sixties. His rhythm team soul mate George Marsh has been playing
drums with Mel since those days as well and is also on this session.
The rest of Mel's septet includes players I am less familiar with -
Bob Afifi on flute, Al Bent on trombone, Pete Estabrook on trumpet,
Harvey Wainapel on tenor sax and Randy Vincent on guitar. The opening
track is a fine uptempo jazz groove piece with the infectious rhythm
team pushing the fine tenor sax and guitar into playing strong, engaging
solos. Bob Afifi plays some elegant flute on the Latin tune "Picturing
You", with nice horn arrangements surrounding and great, melodic
solos from the bass and trumpet. Mel has written some complex, rambunctious
works, "For Smith" starts with a stormy intro, but then switches
direction to a more somber, yet dark and dreamy terrain, with Harvey's
tenor playing a great slow-burn Trane-like solo. George's ever-inventive
drums are at the center of "Revisiting Higgins" and continually
shift the dynamic flow throughout with immense finesse and providing
the fire with Mel's fabulous bass as the flute and guitar both take
quick superb solos. What is so great about this entire affair is that
all the participants play with restrained yet inventive fire throughout,
the smoothness of the sound is due to the beauty of the a great studio
it was recorded in. Adventurous music, that is never too far out, but
still endlessly complex and provocative. 16. CHIAKI YOSHIHARA - Ghost
(People's Records 0002) The enchanting Ms. Yoshihara just paid us a
visit while she was in town, played a gig at CB's and left us with her
rather unique cd. She sings and plays guitars and keyboards and is backed
by another Japanese band called Ghost, not the one many of us have heard
before. This Ghost (a trio) did the arrangements and play keyboards,
violin and bass, with a guest drummer. Chiaki occasionally reminds me
of Patti Smith, but sings mostly in her native tongue. It begins with
an uptempo drone rocker with some spinning violin, piano and el. bass.
Track 2 is starts somber and majestically, but later picks up speed
to a frantic section, but then slows down once again. Track 3 shows
a quaint, cute side, reminding me of some charming sixties psych ditty.
Track 6 has a calm, sad and charming vibe and the next trrack features
some lovely harpsichord and enchanting vocals. Overall, this reminds
me of a long-lost sixites gem, which embraces a few different genres
- folk-rock and ethereal pop. There is suspenseful element on track
8 which sounds like an eerie nursery rhyme with some exotic acoustic
string thing being twisted a bit and some strange piano sprinkles as
well. This cd ends with three live songs which are well recorded and
rock a bit, although they are done on acoustic guitar and percussion
with good use of the echo effects. An odd, yet rather endearing offering
from Ms. Yoshihara.
17. JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER
- Change (Textile Records 2) This is the new one from that weird northern
west coast avant/folk/rock octet, who have just toured Europe and returned
with a few copies of this rare import release. They begin in peaceful
folk heaven with acoustic guitar(s), harmonica, percussion and melancholy
drifting vocals. JOMF do a great job playing dreamy, mildly disturbing
psychedelic landscapes where sounds often manipulated as the float through
a slowly evolving kaleidoscope of soft colors. There is backwoods tribal
quality to chugging rhythms and the hazy ghost-like images wander through
the scenery. There is a magical alien glue that holds it altogether,
which is hard to describe, but most familiar to former (and current)
stoners like myself. 18. JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER
- Figure 5 (Road Cone 024) This bizarre offering is from 2000 and features
a larger ten piece line-up, with a couple of guests on a few tracks.
JOMF here cover three traditional Americana tunes - "Go Down, Old
Hannah", "Chiapas!" and "Amazing Grace" (that's
right Raymon). From the industrial humming electronic drones at the
start, with some processed sax (?) a' buzzing to sinister bent strings
and occasional percussive spice and a distant Amalgamated Children's
Chorus, to more swirling psychedelic earthy goofiness. The traditional
tunes have a nice twisted charm and seem to organically grow out of
the freer sections. The dreamy laid back sections stretch out time like
a lazy day in spring and feel nice. Completely cool cardboard packing
with illuminating text from Alan Lomax on the history of "Amazing
Grace". Somewhere between the warped charm of No Neck Blues Bin
and Sun City Girls, lies the innocent alien cosmic flow of Jackie-O
MF. 19. JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER
- Liberation (Road Cone 031) This is the JOMF CD release that I have
seen previously, so we know it has available before and is from 2001.
It was recorded in Portland, Oregon and contains all originals, except
for Dino Valente's "Something on You Mind". Once again, we
find ourselves being sucked into the unnerving, yet well crafted world
of alien transmissions, which continually mutate, glow, flutter and
evolve through waves of strange and often somber sounds. The opening
benediction is called "Peace on Earth" and does begin calmly,
but soon shifts into a more disturbing series of nervous waves. Eventually
waves shimmering psych guitars shimmer and mesmerize like one of those
magical Dead jams. A long (73 minute) journey through slowly evolving
dreamscapes, sometimes haunting, sometimes scary, but always fascinating.
20. TERRY RILEY - Keyboard
Studies CD (MDG 1135) Performed by Steffen Schleiermacher (keyboard
realization and programming) and Bernd E. Gengelbach (sound projection).
Minimal music and its strangely fascinating suspended sound animation
have long held cult status in the musical world. On this CD Schleielermacher
offers more new innovations with Riley's "Keyboard Studies #1"
and "Studies #2". The studies are a few pages with short musical
formulas and a long 'user's guide' requiring a lot of thought and organizational
energy before things can be put into practice. Schleiermacher soon recognized
that one interpreter alone couldn't realize the tricky polyphony of
the keyboard studies. He arranged the pieces for electronic keyboard;
a computer exercises the proper control, so that the voices are never
heard simultaneously and the tones occur in rapid succession. An oscillating
sound fabric results -- in dimensions creating the impression of eternity.
21. MORTON FELDMAN - String
Quartet No. 2 (Mode 112) Morton Feldman's monumental String Quartet
No.2 is in one unbroken movement. The Flux Quartet performance is complete,
lasting a total of 6 hours 7 minutes and 7 seconds. Available in 2 Editions:
a 5-CD set or complete and uninterrupted on 24-bit audio DVD! In the
1970s Feldman took up the study and collecting of antique Turkish rugs,
a highly evolved and exquisite folk art. The rugs are intricately patterned,
symmetrical in basic design but with constant variation and displacement
in the detailed execution of that design; strikingly and subtly colored,
including fine variegations of principal colors resulting from the dyeing
process. Analogies are clear to Feldman's music as it takes up large-scale
patterning, partly working with his familiar subtle gradations of rhythm
and instrumental color and ostinati, loops or extended repetitions of
a sounds, partly -- and especially in this second string quartet --
continually finding new and surprising qualities of color. There are
a number of sounds in this piece unlike anything one has heard from
a string quartet. One can experience the work uninterrupted complete
with no need to change discs on the DVD Edition. 22. GYAN RILEY - Food For
The Bearded (New Albion) Great album of mysterious and maybe even a
little dark compositions for guitar and other guests from this fine
young guitarist, who contributed the brilliant opening track to our
"156 Strings" collection. New Albion is pleased to announce
the solo debut of guitarist and composer Gyan Riley. This set of compositions
describes a path that started in what surely must have been a most unique
household. Now, at the age of 25, his complete command of the canon
for nylon string guitar is wedded with a Northern California sensibility
for improvisation and drift. Gyan, born in California in 1977, is the
son of renowned avant garde composer and North Indian raga vocalist
Terry Riley. Gyan is currently the artistic director for the San Francisco
Classical Guitar Society. Gyan (the word means 'knowledge' in Hindi)
is the only person to have been named by Pandit Pran Nath, when Terry
and Ann announced they were expecting, Pran Nath proclaimed "Gyan
Shankar is coming." He certainly is.
23. [KING CRIMSON] PROJEKCT
X - Heaven And Earth (DGM 0005; USA) Heaven and Earth was recorded during
the rehearsals for of 'The ConstruKction of Light' by King Crimson and
is comprised of essentially great instrumental improvisations (the calibre
of which you wish there might be more of in concert or record) - cut
6, "Overhead Floor Mats Under Toe", sounds like the kind of
playing you might expect from an unheard '72-'74 Crimson improv including
Fripp's solos! Initially only available to the public during the 2000
tour. Recommended! 24. KING CRIMSON - A Beginners'
Guide To The King Crimson Collectors' Club (DGM 0008; USA) This collects
tracks from the first 11 KC Collectors Club releases which were only
available by mail. (We're in talks to sell the indivual volumes in our
store and mail order!) Amazing live cuts and unreleased rehearsal tapes
from all the various line-ups/periods of this group '69 to present day,
none of which have been found on retail racks before! 25. KING CRIMSON - The Great
Deceiver: Live 1973 - 1974 [4 CD Box & Scrapbook] (DGM 9904; USA)
The famous '70s lineup of Crimson (Robert Fripp/John Wetton/Bill Bruford/David
Cross). Showcasing tons of improvisational material, and brilliant performances
of album classics; taken primarily from 4 concerts both in the Europe
and the US (including the rest of the Providence, RI '74 show that yielded
"...Schizoid Man" on 'USA' and the unedited version of the
live "Providence" improv cut originally found on 'Red'). Includes
Doctor D, never recorded in the studio. Packaged with a thick book(let)/scrapbook
that is several nights reading alone! Never mind endless bad-sounding
bootlegs - the cream is here! 26. KING CRIMSON - Frame
By Frame: The Essential King Crimson [4 CD Box & Scrapbook] (Virgin
KC Box 1; USA) Disc 1: King Crimson 1969-71; Disc 2: King Crimson 1972
- 74 ; Disc 3: King Crimson 1981 - 8 4; Disc 4: King Crimson - Live
1969 - 84 . 45 prime cuts include rarities only found in this set: the
original KC/GG&F studio version of "Groon", a 1984 live
"Larks' Tongues Pt III" edited together from two separate
concerts (a la Zappa), an intrigueing remix of "Bolero", the
single version of "Cat Food" and a version of "Cadence
& Cascade" with an Adrian Belew vocal stripped in in place
of Gordon Haskell! Includes a 64 page LP sized booklet packed with tiny
type and photos that is Fripp's diary of the group for over 2 decades
from the late '60s to the early '90's (the first 32 pages is the original
booklet that came with the 1976 double LP set 'The Young Person's Guide
To KC"; the next 32 pages deals with the years from 77 on up to
'92) Few (or none!) are the box sets that come with a printed history
this vital! A WIDE VARIETY of CLASSIC AVANT-JAZZ & PROGRESSIVE REISSUES & HISTORIC RECORDINGS for your LISTENING PLEASURE: 27. SOFT MACHINE - Live at
the Paradiso (Turning Point Music 212) Recorded live at the Paradiso
in Amsterdam on 3/29/69 with Robert Wyatt on drums and vocals, Hugh
Hopper (replacing Kevin Ayers) on fuzz-bass and Mike Ratledge on fuzz-organ
and electric piano. 'Live At The Paradiso', the only live recording
of the Soft Machine available from this period, captures the band at
its frenzied creative early peak. Featuring material from the band's
amazing second album. Not available on CD at present time. 28. THIRD EAR BAND - Raga
Live (Turning Point Music 216) Although the Third Ear Band recorded
for Harvest (home to many of Britain's leading progressive rock acts)
in the late 1960s, the group was more of an experimental ensemble, relying
on strictly acoustic instruments, such as violin, oboe, cello and hand
drumming. Founder and drummer Glen Sweeney used the term "raga"
to describe their music because the melodies and trance-like rhythmic
patterns used were inspired by the classical music of India. Not available
on CD at present time.
30. DAVID MURRAY & THE
LOW CLASS CONSPIRACY - Flowers for Albert (West Wind 2039) This is live
set from the Bimhuis in Amsterdam in August of 1977, during the early
loft jazz days and it features an all-star line-up of David on tenor
sax, Butch Morris on cornet, Don Pullen on piano, Fred Hopkins on bass
and (currently arch-conservative blowhard) Stanley Crouch on drums.
The opening track is the title tune and is a rather swaggering gospelish
tune which has a drunken off-kilter groove, short and sweet. "Patricia
- Lost and Lonely" is an aptly titled somber, free piece which
turns into a sad and eloquent ballad. "Holy Seige on Intrique"
is quiet long (almost 42 minutes) and moves through different sections,
first with a trio of Don on playful piano, Fred on buzzing bass and
Stanley doing a freer version of Ed Blackwell's organic spinning drums,
I just wish the piano was in the same room as the drums, which are a
bit louder, but not as closely mic'd. Don goes further out as the piece
progresses, finally exploding into intense free blowing with some powerful
and heavy blowing from David's immense tenor by the halfway point and
eventually Butch Morris sails in and also erupts, with horns soaring
for the stratosphere. "Joann's Green Satin Dress" is another,
somewhat bent piece in which Don at times sounds like he is playing
in his own world as Butch takes a somber, quirky and cool solo. Nice
to hear Butch soloing, since he no longer plays that cornet and only
does his conductions. This is mostly a fine and historic recording,
too bad Don's great piano is a bit removed. ART ENSEMBLE OF CHICAGO -
Live In Berlin [2 CD Set] (Westwind 2051; Germany) This is a well-recorded
concert from March 3rd '79, making it prime creative playing for this
unit, coming before the stagnation developed during the early '80s ECM
years and the even glossier and less adventurous DIW years of the late
'80s-early '90s. Absolutely stunning versions/variations of "Dreaming
Of The Master", " A Jackson In Your House", "As
If It Were The Seasons" and three other pieces make for a seamless
voyage through all the territories this unit is hallowed for, ranging
from post-bop to tribal to free form madness. This was likely an original
double LP (though we've never seen it!) in Europe as the times for each
disc would seem to indicate (about 40 minutes per disc). BEAK DOCTOR, an improv label from San Francisco in the late 70s-early '80s that released several great LPs, some in conjunction with Metalanguage, is reviving its presence/catalogue in both new material on CD (and LP!) and re-issue CDs. The first out is the all new... 33. GREG GOODMAN/MATS GUSTAFSSON/GEORGE
CREMASCHI - They Were Gentle And Pretty Pigs (Beak Doctor 7) Recorded
live at Woody Woodman's Finger Palace 2/5-6/99 in Berkeley. From the
liner notes:" Greg Goodman: unprepared piano and objets d'interieur;

contrabass & very strict rulers" Indeed! NEW BLUE
