A FEW NEW RELEASES & REISSUES FOR OCTOBER 2OTH- PLUS A SHORT GIG UPDATE

-1.JOHN ZORN'S Cartoon/S&M Tzadik release is delayed until at least November, maybe longer.

-2.ELLIOTT SHARP'S Terraplane double cd on Knit Works is also delayed until the Knit gets out of their financial black hole. 



As if last week's PreNewsletter 50 didn't have enough titles (70!) for this month, here's even more that have come in this week:

1. ANNETTE PEACOCK- an acrobat's heart. (ECM 1733) The return of the incredible songstress and composer backed by the Cikada String Quartet. Tentative in-store at DMG on December 2nd! $15

2. CIRCLE-Pori (Feldspar 3) Mind-blowing new Finnish progressive/space/rock unit who received rave reviews for their recent gigs at Brownies & the Knit! $14.

3. RESONANCE MAGAZINE- The First 25 Years (Vol. 8 No.2/Vol. 9 No.1) Essential zine covering the first quarter century of the London Musician's Collective with articles by Clive Bell, Steve Beresford, Maggie Nicols, David Toop’ etc. plus a 2 cd set of rare performances by John Zorn, Ground Zero, Hugh Davies, Peter Cusack, etc. $13.

4. JON ROSE-Fringe Benefits (Entropy 006) An important document of multi-string manipulator-inventor-musician Jon Rose's archives from his years ('77-'85) in Australia. Includes solos of various bizarre stringed instruments plus improv from the likes of Jim Denley, Luc Houtkamp, Maggie Nicols, Rik Rue and too many names most of us probably don't know. Ltd. Edition 2 cd set for $20.

5. EVAN PARKER-PAUL DUNMALL-BARRY GUY-TONY LEVIN-Birmingham Concert (Rare 26) Slim told me this was a new release, Bob B. says this is not true! Anyway, it sound great with two (British) tenor sax gods, our favorite (UK) contrabassist supreme and the other Tony Levin (drummer for Keith Tippett's Mujician). $16.

6. DEREK BAILEY-String Theory (Paratactile 1109) Supposedly solo feedback from the grandpappy of British avant-jazz guitar, we will let you know. $17.

7. EUGENE CHADBOURNE & VERTEK ENSEMBLE-Dim Sum Dogers (Volatile 3) Vertrek are a swell guitar & drums improv duo from the Toronto area who backed Derek Bailey on a release from last year. $14.

8. STEVE LACY-Straws (Cramps 066) Third solo soprano sax reissue in the past month or two - from 1977! $15.

9. PHIL HAYNES-HERB ROBERTSON 5TET-Brooklyn-Berlin (CIMP 218) Featuring Ned Rothenberg, Vinny Golia and Ken Filiano - amazing all-star line-up!! $14.

10. PAUL DUNMALL-TONY LEVIN DUO-Spiritual Empathy/Duets 1994 (Rare 24) Extra-ordinary tenor/alto sax & drums duo, both from Keith Tippett's amazing Mujician Quartet! $16.

11. EVAN PARKER & THE TON ART ENSEMBLE-Brot & Honig (Truemuze 3) Ton Art are a fine 13 piece modern jazz/classical ensemble from Germany who have worked with Fred Frith and Anthony Braxton and have recorded for Hat Art in the past - Evan plays exclusively soprano sax here and never disappoints! $15.

12. TIM HODGKINSON & KEN HYDER [SHAMS]-Burghan Interference (Slam 238) Great alto sax/clarinet/flat guitar and drums/electronics duo from former Henry Cow member and great British avant-jazz drummer! $17.

13. THOMAS LEHN/MARCUS SCHMICKLER-Bart (Erstwhile 012) Extremely demanding analogue synth & electronics duo that will surely do you in! $13.

14. DEMI SEMI QUAVER-Golden Animal Head (Warner Indies Network 82042) Bizarre Japanese post-whatever avant-rock unit with two great god mountain cds under their belt! Their lead singer Ami looks like a creature from another planet. Jap. import for $17.

15. TOM CORA'S ROOF-"Trace" (red note no. 7) Outstanding and long awaited second live effort from the late great cellist hero and former/forever downtowner - Tom Cora, with Luc from the Ex on acoustic bass guitar, Phil Minton on extreme vocals and Michael Vatcher on drums. Live in Amsterdam and on Radio Bremen! $18.

16. THE VINNY GOLIA LARGE ENSEMBLE-The Other Bridge (Nine Winds 210/220) Powerful avant-jazz 26 piece orchestra leader/conductor/composer/reeds wonder Vinny Golia! Two cd set for $23.

17. GROUP 1850-Agemo's Trip to Mother Earth (Psuedonym 1047) Legendary Dutch psychedelic weirdness from 1967-'68 which will still blow minds from hokiness to over-the-top jammin'! Includes 3D glasses to look at the world in another way. $14.

18. JOE GALLIVAN/GARY SMITH-s/t (Paratactile 108) Joe is an amazing jazz drummer, pioneer of electronic percussion who has lived in Florida, Hawaii, Europe and on occasion England! He was once in Hopper-Dean-Tippett-Gallivan. Gary Smith is a peculiar electric guitarist with his own sound who has played for Mass & Powerfield. This is their first duo effort and it is quite incredible! $17.

19. STEFFEN BASHO-JUNGHANS-Song of the Earth (Sublingual 008) Superb solo 6 & 12 string acoustic guitar picker from Germany much inspired by John Fahey, Leo Kottke and Robbie Basho! $13.

JOHN ZORN IMPROV NIGHT at Tonic Wed November 1st at 8 & 10pm

CECIL TAYLOR & TONY OXLEY!!!!!! At Tonic for three fucking incredible nights Nov. 2nd- Nov. 4th - sets at 8 & 10:30 each night. Tickets are expensive but well worth it! This is a rare meeting of two giants of world class improv prowess - not to be missed!

DAVE DOUGLAS' CHARMS OF THE NIGHT SKY CD RELEASE PARTY-CONCERT at Tonic Fri & Sat November 10th & 11th - celebrating his wonderful new cd!

BILL LASWELL & TRILOK GURTU at the Bottom Line Saturday November 11th at 7:30 and 10:30 - rare opportunity to see/hear our favorite bassist/producer in a small room!!

KING CRIMSON!!!! Returns to NYC on Sunday & Monday November 12th & 13th at the Supper Club at 8pm - this Crimson does not include Bruford & Levin, but still rules!!
