AND NOW, A MONSTROUS LOAD OF GOODIES!!!
ANTHONY BRAXTON - 23 Standards (Quartet) 2003 [4 CD set] (Leo 402-405; UK) The 4-CD set (4.5 hours of music) was recorded during a series of concerts in 2003 by the new Braxton's quartet with Kevin O'Neil on guitar, Kevin Norton on percussion, Andy Eulau on bass and Anthony Braxton on saxophone. The set is destined to make jazz history not only for Braxton's discovery of the most remarkable guitarist to emerge in a decade, but for its special quality of performing standards in an entirely new way and reinventing the tradition. Braxton's work becomes even more valuable and necessary in view of the forces of reaction in jazz. As Stuart Broomer writes in his remarkable liner notes, while a conservative performer merely echoes and diminishes the tradition, Braxton makes known the social, moral, and historical imperatives that drive this music and are embedded in the tradition. He makes known the spirit of spontaneiety, community, change, freedom, life and creation. He makes it as new and vital as the original forms. "Our thanks, then, to Anthony Braxton. In an era when the jazz past is regularly Bowdlerized, trivialized and travestied - reduced to little more than a marketing plan - Braxton presents it in much of its true potentiality as the authentic discourse of its time, making both the past and the present (even the future) that much richer than it was before". Limited edition of 1000 copies.

DAVE DOUGLAS/LOUIS SCLAVIS/PEGGY LEE/DYLAN VAN DER SCHYFF - Bow River Falls (Koch/Premonition Records 5744) Featuring Dave on trumpet, Louis on clarinet & bass clarinet, Peggy on cello and Dylan on drums & laptop. Now that our fave trumpeter and good pal, Dave Douglas, is no longer with RCA, he is free from the corporate schedule and expectations and can record when and with whom he wants. This extraordinary quartet first met at the Vancouver Jazz Fest in 1998 and again at a Banff Workshop in 2002, when Dave was a director. This was when this wonderful studio effort was recorded. French clarinets wizard, Louis Sclavis, remains one of the greatest of all modern clarinet heroes, with some two dozen releases on ECM, Label Bleu and Victo. The great Vancouver-based couple cellist Peggy Lee and percussionist Dylan Van Der Schyff are involved in many bands and projects, from the Now Orchestra and to their work with Francois Houle, to name just two.
Everyone here contributes to the writing, with the one cover being Steve Lacy's "Blinks". "Blinks" is quite an adventurous and unique piece, reminding me of that great third stream, Jimmy Guiffre-like quirkiness. Guiffre is another distinguished clarinet hero. Dave wrote the title track, which is a dreamy one, with luscious muted horn, delicate bass clarinet, folky cello and exquisite percussion and sampler. Louis' "Fete Forraine" has the quartet softly bending their notes together, the music is both playful and cautious. Peggy's "Window" is a suspenseful, freer piece that drifts into somber charted territory. Louis' "Maputo" features lovely harmonies for the trumpet and bass clarinet, walking cello and superb brush-work by Dylan and winds its way through freer terrain. "Petals" reminds me Eric Dolphy (on bass clarinet) sitting with the Mile Davis Quintet of the mid-sixties, when they were in their more spacious mode and Miles was playing his sublime mute. Peggy's "Retracing 2" deals with somber textures floating in space, more cautious and dream-like drifting. "Dernier Regards/Vol" sounds like one of those Masada pieces where Joey is playing his nimble hands on drums technique, Dylan sounds wonderful here and is the center of the cyclone, spinning quickly while the clarinet, cello & trumpet play the intricate theme in the distance. The one group piece is "Dark Water" and it is quite spooky, slowly mutating with sampled sounds, squeaks and fragile squawks slowly swirling around one another. Dave's eloquent "Paradox" closes this journey just right with a strong duo of trumpet and brushes and then some brilliant bass clarinet, cello as bass and free-wheeling percussion. All in all, a truly splendid gift from the new quartet.

THE REGGIE NICHOLSON CONCEPT - Unnecessary Noise Allowed (Abstract Recordings 1) Featuring Gene Ghee on sax & flute, Mark McGowan on trumpet, Bruce Edwards on guitar, Brad Jones on bass and Reggie Nicholson on drums and all compositions. Although this especially diverse work has been out since 1997, this is the first time that DMG has had copies to sell. Reggie is one of downtown's best drummers and has been a part of the AACM for quite a while, playing with Muhal Richard Abrams, as well as bands with pianist Yuko Fujiyama. I am unfamiliar with both horn players here, but I do know guitarist Bruce Edwards from his work with Sun Ra and other Philly folks. Bassist Brad Jones is another of downtown's best who is on dozens of recordings and live dates, from the Jazz Passengers to Misha Mengelberg & Dave Douglas. Each of the ten pieces here deals with different grooves and styles, evoking a variety of moods. From the slow, pensive and mysterious opener to the somewhat funky Afrobeat meets Blue Note groove of "Bootblack". Gene Ghee's dark and haunting tenor tone and Bruce's sinuous and sly electric guitar blend perfectly on this one. Brad's (electric?) bass and Bruce's guitar swirl freely together on "Power Stronger than Itself", with superb solos from both horns & guitar and a hypnotic theme which moves in waves. "After Five" features some lovely flute, trumpet & guitr playing and harmonies, while the title track is an amazing avant/funk groove tune with some fine wah-wah jazz guitar from Bruce and strong Trane-toned tenor sax from Mr. Ghee. Reggie's writing quite strong throughout, especially on "Belief Beyond", which moves between slower and more ominous sections with some superb percussion (gongs & cymbals) at the center, with some excellent electric bass & guitar solos. "HJN#1" has another of those wonderful, memorable melodies and Blue Note sorta grooves. At about 55 minutes, this is a rich and rewarding work throughout.

PATTY WATERS - You Thrill Me: A Musical Odyssey 1962-1979 (Water 137) In the mid 1960's vocalist/pianist Patty Waters released a pair of groundbreaking recordings, 'Patty Waters Sings' and 'College Tour' for the legendary avant garde/jazz label ESP-DISK'. Sadly, since that time, very few recordings have been released by Patty, although she still performs. 'You Thrill Me' is a collection of all PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED recordings spanning a nearly 20 year time period, capturing this unique jazz vocalist at the peak of her powers. There are several Patty original compositions as well as her own spin on various jazz standards. Among the highlights is a 1964 three song session produced by Tom Wilson (known for his work with Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground). Booklet includes many rare vintage photos, detailed liner notes by Byron Coley and Patty Waters, and an introduction by Masaki Batoh of Japanese band Ghost.

You should recognize Francois, Steve and Jay from the many CIMP and Cadence dates they've done in the past.
CD for $14
DAVID TAYLOR TRIO - Morning Moon (CIMP 307) Featuring David Taylor on trombone with the great CIMP rhythm team of Dominic Duval on contrabass and Jay Rosen on drums Mr. Taylor is a fine trombonist and composer with two great releases out on New World. FOUR FINE RELEASES FROM SOME OF WEST COASTS' FINEST MUSICIANS:
ROVA SAXOPHONE QUARTET - Works Volume 3 (Black Saint 120196) Although this gem from our favorite west coast sax quartet was released in 1999, we have never been able to get copies until now, due to distribution problems. The three long works featured here include Robin Holcomb's "Laredo", Muhal Richard Abrams's "Quartet #1" and Steve Adams' "The Gene Pool". Since we dig each and every disc from ROVA, we are just as eager to hear this as you all should be. Review soon.

THE ROB BLAKESLEE QUARTET - Spirit of the Times (Nine Winds 208) Featuring Mr. Blakeslee on trumpet, cornet & flugelhorn, Vinny Golia on B-flat & bass clarinets, Ken Filiano on bass and Billy Mintz on drums. This is Rob's sixth (in-print) CD for the Nine Winds or Louie labels and I've always dug his work with and for Vinny Golia. 'Spirit of the Times' is a long (74 minutes) and varied work that remains fascinating throughout the six long pieces. "Just Off the Avenue" is dedicated to another LA based cornet hero and teacher Bobby Bradford and Rob also plays the cornet, swirling wonderfully around Vinny's splendid clarinet. Rob also has a superb, strong, yet fragile tone that works perfectly with Vinny's equally thoughtful bass clarinet playing. Ken's fluid contrabass is buzzing and burning intensely underneath, as Billy's fine drumming also helps navigate the currents. Bobby Bradford's most popular quartet was with the late clarinetist John Carter and this quartet does a fine job of continuing in their tradition and sound. Some pieces begin delicately with dreamy bass and soft percussion growing until the horns come in softly building with sublime solos from the clarinet and cornet. Rob's mature composing is also in evidence, especially the quiet yet quick "Colorful Eyes", with some outstanding solos from Rob's trumpet and Vinny's bass clarinet. Bassist Ken Filiano, who now lives here, in fine form throughout, his elastic lines consistently centering all the energy flowing around him. Quite a grand work from Rob Blakeslee's excellent quartet.
CD for $14
STEUART LIEBIG/THE MENTONES - Locustland (pfMentum 017) Featuring Tony Atherton on alto sax, Bill Barrett on chromatic harmonica, Joseph Berardi drums & percussion and Steuart on contrabass guitar and compositions. Steuart is one of the best electric bassists to emerge from the LA underground, as any one of his half dozen fine releases on Nine Winds, Cadence or Cryptogramophone can attest to. His collaborations with Nels Cline and Vinny Golia are always great. The Mentones is his new quartet with the unusual line-up of alto sax, chromatic harp, el. bass and drums, they sound like no-one else. The other three players are all new names for me and blend of harp and alto sax is really something else. Steuart's often burning and busy el. bass remains at the center of the storm, pushing hard as that feisty blues-harp and alto sax wail together, both taking strong solos throughout. The Mentones' sound is a earthy blend of jazz, blues and rock with a bit of funk groove thrown in. I dig the way the drummer fuels the rhythmic flow on some bent metal on "drifter", which features an exciting el. bass solo from Steuart. From sections which are stripped down and skeletal to the high flying and ultra-tight.

THE JEFF KAISER OCKODEKTET/THE KAISER/DIAZ-INFANTE SEXTET - The Alchemical Mass/Suite Solutio (pfMentum 019) The collective personnel features Jeff Kaiser & Kris Tiner on trumpets & flugel; Vinny Golia, Eric Barber & Jason Mears on woodwinds; Michael Vlatkovich on trombone; Mark Weaver on tubs; Ernesto Diaz-Infante on prepared guitar & piano; Wayne Peet & Jim Connolly on percussion and Brad Dutz on drums. LA trumpeter, Jeff Kaiser, just launched his new label pfMentum with some eight CDs from a number of LA's finest jazz & new music players. Jeff has collaborates with Vinny Golia and can be found on some Nine Winds releases. Mr. Kaiser presents two different ensembles here. His Ockodektet includes 11 musicians plus The Ojai Camerata, a modern classical vocal ensemble with some 17 singers. "The Alchemical Mass" is a suite of six pieces and is a serious work, closer to contemporary classical than to modern jazz. The layers of spooky voices and chanting (in Latin) are utilized just right, never too much with superb soprano (Eric Barber) and sopranino (Vinny Golia) saxes sailing on top. Although being Jewish myself, I haven't heard much Church music in my life, but I must admit to digging the layers of dark, chanting voices with those twisted horns squealing on top. The Latin and English translation is printed in the booklet, but it is the overall sound that fascinates me. There some really intense and explosive moments found here that fit within the grand scheme.
The Kaiser/(Ernesto)Diaz-Infante Sextet perform "Suite Solutio" for the second half of this CD and you might recall Ernesto from his prepared guitar work with local guitarist Chris Forsyth, they've played at DMG a couple of times in the past. 'Suite Solutio' is another (5 part) suite. The instrumentation for the sextet is trumpets, prepared acoustic guitar, trombone (Scot Ray, CD on Crypto), bass & two percussionists. This music is again very spooky, sometimes stark, like an abstract painting with the well-placed paint splattered on the canvas. The writing is strong and focused with some impressive muted horns, free-guitar rambling and intricate rhythm team work. The production and recording is especially well done, all the music is well-crafted. An impressive and auspicious beginning for a fine new label.

JOOST BUIS - Astronotes (Data 041) Featuring Joost on trombone, compositions & production; Tobias Delius, Jan Willem van der Ham & Frans Vermeerssen on reeds; Felicity Provan on cornet; Paul Pallesen on guitar; Cor Fuhler on piano & organ, Wilbert de Joode on double bass and Alan Purves & Michael Vatcher on percussion. Considering I only know of half (Tobias, Cor, Wilbert, Alan & Michael) of the ten players here, it should surprise me how wonderful this Amsterdam-based tentet is, but again this is yet another of those fine Dutch treats that we have gotten in this month alone. Turns out that Joost also plays steel guitar and has worked with other Dutch musicians - Ab Baars, the Willem Breuker Kollektief, Sean Bergin, Palinckx, Misha Mengelberg and Han Bennink. Our distributor doesn't list any other recordings by Joost as a leader.
Mr. Buis wrote all but one track, with a cover of Ellington & Strayhorn's "Zweet Zurzday". "The Eggs" features some strong writing, tight, swinging arrangements and a sense of fun. Somewhere between the ICP Orchestra and Breuker's Kollekteif, is this ensemble, without all the silliness, yet still somewhat adventurous. On "Bata4", they bounce between quick and slower sections, sometimes twisted, yet always tight, with an inspired electric guitar solo at the center of focused storm. "Grilkijker I" opens with some tasty Reichian or Glass-like repeating horns, but is slower and not nearly as unrelenting. "The Comet's Point of View" is a freer piece that still sounds charted and rather impressionistic and is filled with suspense. Much of this reminds me of soundtrack music with each piece evoking a different mood. "Spaghetti Canon" has a playful groove with some wacky horns swirling around, before they sail into the groove as well. "Nantones" has a rather film noire vibe with some fine old-fashioned wah-wah trombone, muted horns and yawning reeds. "Tunguska Butterfly" starts with another old-timey jazz intro, before it turns free and fractured, while the Duke's "Zweet Zurzday" starts with hushed, muted horns and is quite restrained and lovely. Commencing with some out organ on "Grilkijker II" by Cor Fuhler, we are left with some righteous alien transmission that seems to come from home planet of Sun Ra.

GIORGIO GASLINI - Gaslini Legend [2 CD set] (Splasch 5001) Solo and duo piano excursions from Italy's best modern jazz pianist, composer and bandleader. After some 14 releases on Soul Note, Gaslini finally decides to jump ship and land on the other great Italian jazz label - Splasch.
2 CD set for $32
STEFANO MALTESE TENTET - Hangin' in the Sky (Splasch 139) Another of Italy's best, Stephano plays sax and always chooses his partners well. Featuring Pino Minafra on trumpet and Carlo Actis Dato & Eugenio Colombo also on saxes. Stefano's previous treasure, "Double Mirror", featured both Keith Tippett and Evan Parker. Can't wait to hear this new one.
Italian import CD for $19
DONOVAN - Beat CafØ (Appleseed Recordings 1081) Quite a charming return to good form, from one of the sixties best singer/songwriters, whose songs/music blended folk/jazz/rock/blues/psych into one seamless blend. Donavon's all-star quintet has been well chosen and features himself on vocals, guitars & songs, John Chelew on keyboards & production, Danny Thompson on double bass and Jim Keltner on drums & vibes. Donavon had nearly a dozen hits in the sixties, ("Mellow Yellow", "Sunshine Superman" & "Hurdy Gurdy Man"), as well as recording a number of great albums during this time. He also recorded a few mediocre records in the seventies and retired from recording for many years afterwards. This is his first CD is quite a while and he has been matched with a fine, careful producer (John Chelew) and a strong band. His lovely, quavering voice has not changed and sounds just as magical as it once was. The 'Beat CafØ' album is inspired by the beat poetry and words of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, more-so by evoking the vibes of a cafØ or hang-out, where these folks would meet and exchange ideas. Each song has a moody, laid back vibe, with a fine finger-snapping beat. Donavon wrote all but two songs here, he covers the traditional tune "the cuckoo", which was a staple of many folkies in the sixties, as well as putting Dylan Thomas' "do not go gentle" to music and doing a nice job at that. A couple of my employees (DJ John Hall & Mikey) complained that there are no hits here, but I think they are missing the point, this is a relatively strong work that flows together as one piece, not just a collection of songs. Nice work from one of the few sixties survivors whose work is still between categories and with a strong voice.

RICHARD SHINDELL - Vuelta (Koch 9538) When that first Richard Shindell record came out on Shanachie in 1992 with three other new folkies, I knew he would go far. His voice, songs (music & lyrics) and delivery were already something special. 'Vuelta' is his sixth release and again, he remains one of the best singer/songwriters we have. That strong, calm Gordon Lightfoot-like voice is still there touching deeply to those who listen. Richard wrote all the songs here, except for sincere rendition of Pete Seeger's "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy". His well chosen backing band is called Puente Celeste (from Argentina, where this was recorded, possibly) and their instrumentation includes guitarron, accordion, pedal steel, sitar, doudouk, clarinet and Rhodes electric piano. These songs are often melancholy, poignant, resolute and quietly majestic. Sad and touching tales of stowaways, family reunions, sand castles, folks like me that live in Jersey and The Three Marias.

LAPIN KULTA - Visions [CD-EP] (self-produced) This is the second bizarre offering by this strange international duo featuring Paivi Bjorkenheim (wife of Raoul) and Patrick Martinez. It was first released in San Paulo, Brazil in 2003. This consists of one long track, 28+ minutes of warped guitar strings and brain-melting echoes, weird alien voices, bowed steel strings and other nightmarish sounds too disturbing to describe. Put this one on loud and scare the sh*t out of your neighbors!

AXOLOTL - Axolotl (Psycho-Path Records 008) The self-titled debut album conjures comparisons to the Dream Syndicate era (pre-Velvets) work of John Cale, Japanese psychedelia from Magical Power Mako to the Taj Mahal Travelers, the tactile electronic blankets of the Mego label and the layered drones of Phil Niblock. Axolotl meld acoustic instrumentation and electronic processing, harsh blasts and soothing drones, free jazz clatter and teutonic pulse.

CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS
CONLON NANCARROW - Lost Works, Last Works (Other Minds 1002) After having produced, with Conlon Nancarrow, his complete works for player piano -- first on LPs for Thomas Buckner's 1750 Arch Records label in Berkeley and then on CD for Wergo Schallplatten, Mainz -- I regretted not having been able to complete the project with the very last works of this singular figure in 20th century music (and a seminal one for the 21st century). This recording is a step in that direction and I hope an illuminating one to those who are devotees of his masterful and intricately complex music, produced by hand-punching holes in virgin pianola rolls. In addition, there were occasional recordings Nancarrow sent me (and other friends) of his peripheral works: a "Piece for Tape", a "Study for 'Prepared' Player Piano", and his realizations for that instrument of his "Sonatina for Piano and String Quartet No. 1", which he didn't wish to include in his published collections of studies but which kept coming up in conversation with his colleagues. As no retrospective overview of his work would be complete without these examples of his explorations, Other Minds offers them now in the spirit of investigation which prompted their creation." -- Charles Amirkhanian.

ILHAN MIMAROGLU - Agitation CD (Locust 59) Finally back in print, we're happy to present two albums of 'agitprop' electronic music - 'Tract' & 'To Kill A Sunrise' cut between 1968 and 1975 -- by mysterious & controversial Turkish composer Ilhan Mimaroglu -- one of the truly underrepresented pioneers of the golden age of the Princeton-Columbia electronic music scene. Produced as a direct reaction to an extended period of intense repression, counterrevolutionary terror, & execution style murder in Turkey, 'Tract' is a scrambled mash up peppered with spunky electronic bursts, radio ads looped ad nauseum, the breathy, soulful & defiant voice of Turkish singer Tuly Sand & the go-golicious backing jams of little known psych group Topsy Turvy Moon -- all shot up with lines lifted from old left wing standbys Chairman Mao, Karl Marx & Bertolt Brecht among others. 'To Kill a Sunrise' follows suit with a wild, uncompromising orgiastic electro-dirge for those who are murdered by the lackeys of the ruling class while the collection closer, 'La Ruche', brings the audio gestalt to a somewhat more subdued end. Brilliantly re-mastered from the original tapes, Tract features close to 80 minutes of music and original liners. Ilhan Mimaroglu emerged out of the Columbia -- Princeton Electronic Music Center and public radio programs at New York's WBAI where his socially and politically charged radio programs took the city by surprise. He is best known for his work with Edgard Varese, mentor Vladimir Ussachevsky, a spellbinding collaboration with jazz musician Freddy Hubbard and as a chief composer of Fellini's Satyricon as well as electronic albums released on his own Finnadar label.

GEORGE ANTHEIL - Antheil Plays Antheil [2 CD set] (Other Minds 1003/4) Composer George Antheil (1900-1959) is most remembered for his mechanistic piano music hailed by 1920s Paris. The obsessive repetition of his Ballet MØchanique foreshadowed the entire minimalist movement. But by 1948, when he'd become the third most-played American-born composer of orchestral music, his style reflected a more emotional, more mature personality. This centennial collection highlights selections from Antheil's later 'neo-romantic' period -- mostly reissued from the pioneering SPA label of conductor F. Charles Adler -- and including the only recordings of Antheil himself at the piano. Also here are previously unreleased items that lend new insight into one of America's most engrossing mavericks.

DANIEL KIENTZY AND TOM JOHNSON - Kientzy plays Johnson (Pogus 21033) Tom Johnson, born in Colorado in 1939, received B. A. and M. Music degrees from Yale University, and studied composition privately with Morton Feldman. After 15 years in New York, he moved to Paris, where he has lived since 1983. He is considered a minimalist, since he works with simple forms, limited scales, and generally reduced materials, but he proceeds in a more logical way than most minimalists, often using formulas, permutations, and predictable sequences. http://www.tom.johnson.org
Daniel Kientzy (Perigueux, France, 1951) plays the entire saxophone family, from the sopranino to the huge contrabass. Playing alto with a recording of six alto saxophones, (one section is on baritone) Kientzy Loops is, like most of the disk, is a chance to check out the amazing sound of the saxophone. Since the compositional approach is minimal with simple repeated cells and/or some kind of additive system, I get lost in the sound of the horns. Damm, they sound amazing. La Tortue de Mer is a short three minute melody performed on the contrabass and based on a mathematical sequence noticed by Marc Chemillier and used by the people of Vanuatu in the South Pacific in geometrical Turtle drawings. Narayana's Cows: starting with one cow and her offspring, Johnson explains how 14 century mathematician Narayana described cows multiplying while Kientzy demonstrates on multitracked horns, each note representing a cow. Melodies get longer and longer in Infinite Melodies and remind me again how great this recording sounds. Plus I like the simplicity of minimalism. - David Beardsley a/k/a 7/4.

JOHN CALE - New York in the 1960's [5 LP Box Set] (Table of the Elements 087) Five LPs in black-lacquered wood box with libretto, bonus tracks and more. John Cale's great credit, both inside and outside the Velvet Underground, was to have found the inoculation dosage that would addict the music industry to SOUND without alienating one world from the other. But outside the 'official' VU there was also an uncut version of the virus, incubated behind the slum walls of the 1960s Lower East Side, and maintained live in the liquid nitrogen of these insolently recorded reel-to-reel audiotapes, recorded and produced by Tony Conrad and now available in the massive Table of the Elements 5-LP boxed set, 'New York in the 1960's'.
5 LP Box Set for $60
LES McCANN - Invitation To Openness (Water 138) Featuring the 26-minute 'The Lovers', this album is THE essence and translation of the predominant free love theme of the '60s and '70s. Every nuance of McCann's stream of consciousness comes through loud and clear, as do the excellent solos by Yusef Lateef on a wide array of reeds, flutes, and percussion. David Spinozza's electric guitar chops and Alphonse Mouzon's drum and percussion feelings on McCann's completely improvised composition are an auditory delight for fusion fans. Two other compositions, 'Beaux J. Poo Boo' and 'Poo Pye McGoochie (And His Friends)' round out the set with by adding different sonorous characters and musical back stories.

THE MIKE WESTBROOK CONCERT BAND - Celebration (Deram/Universal 986 689/UK) Featuring Mr Westbrook on piano & compositions; John Surman, Mike Osborne, Dave Chambers & Bernie living on saxes & clarinets; Dave Holdsworth, Malcom Griffiths & Dave Perrottet on trombones; Tom Bennellick on French horn; George Smith on tuba; Harry Miller on bass and Alan Jackson on drums. This is the first extraordinary offering by British jazz composer and longtime bandleader Mike Westbrook, whose career continues today. Commencing with "Pastoral", which is just beautiful, austere and elegant, with John Surman taking a breathtaking soprano sax solo. The band is extremely tight with layers of horns weaving magically together. "Parade" is a slow and lush piece with some sublime horn harmonies that recalls Duke Ellington, one of Westbrook's main inspirations and Mingus as well. "Echoes and Heroics" has a few different sections and includes some outstanding rhythm teamwork, intricate themes for the horns and a few mighty impressive solos. "Images" is another slow and lusciously arrangement piece with some sublime warm-toned alto work from Mike Osborne, one of his best solos ever. A magnificent effort, that still sounds wonderful today. Gorgeous writing and playing and nothing too out about this gem.

MIKE WESTBROOK - Metropolis (BGO 454; UK) 'Metropolis' was composed during 1968-9. It had been played in various forms by bands ranging from 4 to 25 musicians. This version for big band was written with the assistance of an Arts Council bursary and was first presented by the London Jazz Centre Society at the Mermaid Theatre, London on May of 1969. This studio version was recorded August 1971. Along with Neil Ardley, Mike Gibbs and Graham Collier, Mike Westbrook was one of the great British modern jazz bandleaders and composers, whose work began in the mid-sixties. All four of these influential composers/arrangers, worked with large ensembles and constantly evolved adding a variety of influences/genres to their palettes. Westbrook's changes were perhaps the most dramatic, as he began working with a large jazz orchestra in the mid-sixties and moved further into progressive rock areas as the seventies blossomed. He eventually collaborated and toured with Henry Cow and worked with operatic structures as well.
'Metropolis' was released in 1971 and featured an incredible cast of some 23 of the UK's finest jazz players including some heavies like saxists Alan Skidmore & Mike Osborne, trumpeters Harry Beckett & Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor on el. piano, Gary Boyle (future Isotope) on guitar, Harry Miller one of two bassists and John Marshall one of two drummers! Although 'Metropolis' was first premiered in May of 1969, it had evolved quite a bit as a different number of players were used at each gig. The piece is broken into nine parts, with "Parts I, III, V& VIII" being collective improvisations with some written segments. "Part I" cautiously opens freely, but soon jumps into funky groove with layers of swirling horns and Boyle's great guitar burning underneath. Tenor sax master Alan Skidmore and trumpeter Dave Holdsworth do some heavy blasting on top, whoa! This entire piece is a fabulous suite that moves perfectly, seamlessly between written and free sections, all of which are completely focused with a sublime thread running through it all. The effervescent Norma Winstone adds her lovely wordless vocals here and there as well. There are a number of superb solos from Henry Lowther, Kenny Wheeler & Harry Beckett on trumpets and George Khan & Mike Osborne on saxes. This was certainly one the great under-recognized jazz gems of 1971, so please do yourself a favor and check it out now!

THE KINKS - ...Are The Village Green Preservation Society: Deluxe Edition [3 CD set] (Castle 102; UK) The first question that anyone confronted by this triple-CD version of Village Green Preservation Society might ask is, is it still possible to properly enjoy Village Green Preservation Society in a single-CD version, such as Castle Records' 1998 reissue? The answer is emphatically yes -- it's a great record, period, even without the whistles and bells, variant takes, and other enhancements present on this set. But limiting oneself to the single CD is a little like only ever seeing the theatrical version of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy -- there's a lot more well worth absorbing in the special editions, and in this case, much more than the 15 songs on the finished album; besides, anyone who bypasses this set misses their chance to hear the beguiling acoustic guitar-driven alternate mix of "Animal Farm" (one of five distinctly different versions here of the achingly catchy song), and the equally alluring acoustic- and electric-textured "Did You See His Name," which wasn't part of the album but dates from the same period. The next question is, how does a 15-song LP become a three-CD set? The simple answer is that Village Green Preservation Society wasn't ever just 15 songs -- there were at least 18 finished songs connected directly to the LP, as it was released in two different versions around the world, and there were more songs composed by Ray Davies and recorded with varying degrees of finality throughout that period (1967-68) in which Village Green Preservation Society evolved. That won't surprise hardcore Kinks fans, most of who have long recognized Village Green Preservation Society as the group's artistic highpoint, in the 1960's and, arguably, their entire history. But it became an underground hit in America, where it somehow managed to remain in print for a dozen years or more, selling a few dozen copies every month well into the 1980's, making converts one listener at a time (there was no radio play to speak of for any of its songs). The virtues of the original album have only grown over time, the album aging gracefully and rather timelessly. The 2004 re-mastering is even better than the 1998 re-mastering, with greater presence on the guitars, bass, drums, and mellotron, and an even closer sound -- the crunch of the electric guitars and the action on the acoustic guitars all in your face. The original album fills out Disc One, supported by four related tracks off the 12-song version; the album's mono mix, which encompasses the bulk of the Disc Two, offers a different breakdown of vocals and instruments and is augmented by single mixes and alternate mixes, including a gorgeous version of "Village Green" with doubled vocals and a stripped-down band version of "Village Green". Disc Three is filled out with the free-standing orchestral overdub for "Village Green," stereo and mono mixes on various stylistically and chronologically (if not textually or thematically) related songs, mostly from the lost substitute album Four More Well Respected Gentlemen (which was nearly released in place of the Village Green album), and miscellaneous, relevant tracks from The Great Lost Kinks Album. These include such beautiful works as the busted single "Lavender Hill," the rocking, catchy "Misty Water," the gorgeous "Rosemary Rose" (not only a pretty tune but a beautifully played tune), and the surging, comical "Polly," all of which have been lurking around the fringes of the Kinks' catalog for 30-plus years. The set closes with the BBC versions of "Do You Remember Walter?," "Animal Farm" (with a heavy electric guitar texture), and "Days." The set comes with full historical notes by Andy Miller and Andrew Sandoval, with Miller's essay containing extensive interviews with Ray Davies and Dave Davies. It's all about as perfect as any piece of music should be treated, especially for the best album by a major band, and it might even open the eyes and ears of some casual listeners to the band's true worth -- very much the keys to the Kinkdom. - Bruce Eder, AMG

AND DON'T FORGET...
PORCUPINE TREE - Signify/Insignificance [2 CD set] (Snapper 884; UK) The first proper album [their fourth from 1997] by the full band, Signify was the next great step forward for Porcupine Tree, a distinct advancement in how well the foursome could completely rock out as well as find its own narcotic style of ambient exploration. The title track signals intentions clearly after the fragmentary sample-collage start of "Bornlivedie" kicks things off. Based on a storming riff from Wilson, the Edwin/Maitland team provide a crisp, driving beat, while Barbieri throws some intriguingly aggressive keyboard work, nervy and unsettling, to offset the calmer parts he also adds to fill things out. Everyone gets to show a little bit of individual flair as the album progresses. Edwin punctuates the epic surge of "Sleep of No Dreaming" with some plucked double bass as well as electric, while Maitland himself takes over on (wordless) vocals and full composition for "Light Mass Prayers," a minimal, entrancing piece. One thing that hasn't noticeably changed much is Wilson's general songwriting and ear for arrangements -- good, but there's little in the way of distinct change in style, leaving it to the performance of the band as a whole to provide the album's own unique stamp. For all that Wilson may once again be singing obliquely on the pressures and nature of end-of-century life, he still does so in an engagingly left-of-center way. Consider the portrait of an incipient Internet/cyberpunk world in "Every Home Is Wired" or the snap-or-not? dilema of "Darkmatter," which closes the album on a subtly tense note, besides being the best song Peter Gabriel-era Genesis never wrote. The often gripping instrumental pieces which are as much a band trademark as anything else appear throughout, including the combination drift and charge of "Idiot Prayer," littered with intriguingly curious samples, and the amusingly titled, hellfire and brimstone preacher-punctuated "Intermediate Jesus." The 2nd Bonus CD on this 2004 edition is called 'Insignifigcance' and it's filled with 10 not-insignificant demo recordings from 1995-1998 - Ned Raggett, AMG

PORCUPINE TREE - The Sky Moves Sideways [2 CD set] (Snapper 883; UK) Though Porcupine Tree's permanent lineup was in place by the time Sky Moves Sideways [their 2nd album from 1995] was complete, it was actually a combination of old and new, with a number of tracks once again done by Wilson on his own. Regardless of the provenance of one song or another, though, it was another fine release under the Porcupine Tree name, continuing the excellence of Up The Downstair while achieving a new liquid sense of drama and overall flow. Barbieri's keyboard skills alone made for a wonderful addition to the ranks, easily capturing the slow sense of unfolding atmosphere and elegance combined from earlier Porcupine Tree work while adding his own touches here and there, a touch of playfulness and improvisation. The Edwin/Maitland rhythm section sound like they were born to work together, able to both set slow, spacy moods and quick gallops and dance-skewed approaches both. Wilson, meanwhile, is still himself, calling to mind strange lyric images of rural collapse and romantic connection in his ever stronger, commanding but never straining vocals. As for guitar, there's subtle delicacy and headbanging overload and plenty of space in between for more. Overall, there's not much in the way of immediate sonic difference from Up The Downstair, more a sense of exploring and establishing styles, almost as if the band members were getting used to working with each other. The tripped-out title track bookends the album (perhaps in a not so subtle nod to a similar sequence on Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here with "Shine on You Crazy Diamond"). The 2nd disc from this 2004 edition is an alternate version of the 34-minute title track on the original album, as well as the 16 minute improvisation "Moonloop" [originally part of the album], the jazz-touched acoustic/electric dreamscape of "Stars Die," plus "Moonloop Coda"! - Ned Raggett, AMG

PRETTY THINGS - S F Sorrow/Resurrection [2 CD set] (Recall 415; UK) The first CD is the original, legendary 17 cut album from 1967. No amount of scrutiny can disguise the fact that this rock opera -- built around a short story by Phil May -- is ultimately a bit of a confusing effort. Although it may have helped inspire Tommy, it is, simply, not nearly as good. That said, it was first, and has quite a few nifty ideas and production touches - and a life all its own! CD 2 is from September 6, 1998, when the Pretty Things gathered at Abbey Road Studios to perform--for the first time ever--their 1960s rock opera S.F. Sorrow live in its entirety. The performance, by the Pretties' actual 1966-67 lineup (with the addition of Frankie Holland on guitar), was simulcast on the Internet and recorded for release on CD. One could justifiably wonder why exactly anyone, even a Pretty Things fan, would want a 1998 live version of it. Well, there are some small extras that make this of more interest than such remakes usually are. One is the presence of Dave Gilmour on guitar on five tracks. Another is the narration of Arthur Brown, whose richly recited between-song links give the story more cohesion than it did first time around. No, this could not be said to be better or as good as the original S.F. Sorrow, but the band do play and sing it quite well here, without any of the ghastly modernizing technology that usually clouds such recreations. - Richie Unterberger, AMG

BLODWYN PIG - Ahead Rings Out (BGO 54; UK) None of Jethro Tull's progressive rock tendencies or classical influences followed Mick Abrahams into his creation of Blodwyn Pig, even with the inclusion Jack Lancaster's sax- and flute-playing prowess. Instead, Abrahams built up a sturdy British blues-rock sound and used Lancaster's horn work to add some fire to the band's jazzy repertoire. Ahead Rings Out is a stellar concoction of gritty yet flamboyant blues-rock tunes and open-ended jazz centered around Mick Abrahams' cool-handed guitar playing, but it's the non-stop infusion of the other styles that makes the album such a solid listen. After only one album with Jethro Tull, Abrahams left to form this band, and it's evident that he had a lot of pent-up energy inside him when he recorded each of the album's tracks. With a barrage of electrifying rhythms and fleeting saxophone and woodwind excursions, cuts like "Sing Me a Song That I Know," "Up and Coming," and "Backwash" whip up highly energetic sprees of rock and blues. Most of the tracks have a hearty shot of rock up the middle, but in cuts like "The Change Song" and "Backwash," the explosive riffs are accompanied by a big band style of enthusiasm, adding even more depth to the material. Andy Pyle's bass playing is definitely distinct throughout each track and is used for anything but a steady background, while labeling Ron Berg's drumming as freewheeling and intemperate would be an understatement. It's apparent that Blodwyn Pig's style is indeed distinct, releasing a liberated and devil-may-care intensity while still managing to stay on track, but the fact that each cut convokes a different type of instrumental spiritedness is where the album really gains its reputation. Wonderfully busy and even a tad motley in some places, Ahead Rings Out shows off the power and vitality that can be channeled by combining a number of classic styles without sounding pretentious or overly inflated. A year later, Blodwyn Pig recorded Getting to This before Abrahams left the band, and although it's a solid effort, it falls just a smidgen short of Ahead Rings Out's bluesy dynamism. - Mike DeGagne, AMG

BLODWYN PIG - Getting To This (BGO 81; UK) A quirky detour of late-'60s British progressive/blues rock, Blodwyn Pig was founded by former Jethro Tull guitarist Mick Abrahams, who left Tull after the This Was album. Abrahams was joined by bassist Andy Pyle, drummer Ron Berg, and Jack Lancaster, who gave the outfit their most distinctive colorings via his saxophone and flute. On their two albums, they explored a jazz/blues/progressive style somewhat in the mold of (unsurprisingly) the early Jethro Tull, but with a lighter feel. They also bore some similarities to John Mayall's jazzy late-'60s versions of the Bluesbreakers, or perhaps Colosseum, but with more eclectic material. Both of their LPs made the British Top Ten, though the players' instrumental skills were handicapped by thin vocals and erratic (though oft-imaginative) material. The group were effectively finished by Abrahams' departure after 1970's Getting to This - Richie Unterberger, AMG

ROY BUCHANAN - Roy Buchanan/Second Album (BGO 541; UK) Considered his first album [though actually preceeded by the Buch And The Snake Stretchers album released privately, this is his first record for Polydor]. The recording and production on this is delightfully bare, sparse in ornamentation, and full of bum notes and aborted ideas that would be deleted on most commercial releases. It is a loose, highly improvised affair that amply demonstrates why the leader is one of the underappreciated giants of rootsy guitar. Straddling country, blues, and traditional rock & roll, Buchanan's playing is fiery and unpremeditated. His tone is delightfully raw and piercing, his solo ideas impetuous and uncluttered. On the instrumental tracks, such as his famous reading of "Sweet Dreams" or Buchanan's own "The Messiah Will Come Again," one can see why he was such an influence on Jeff Beck, another master of the instrument known for his genre-blending and ragged spontaneity. There is a slight Michael Bloomfield influence felt in Buchanan's blues playing, most evident in the first chorus of "John's Blues" and the quasi-Eastern ornamentations on "Pete's Blue." He plays with pitch, placing notes in unexpected places, constantly keeping the listener guessing. The country tracks, such as "I am a Lonesome Fugitive" and Hank Williams' "Hey, Good Lookin'," benefit greatly from Chuck Tilley's understated vocals. Despite Tilley's presence, the main focus on this record is Buchanan's wailing guitar, which punctuating the vocals with bluesy cries and country moans. This is raw guitar playing and music making, not for the faint of heart. Fans of blues or country guitar, or those just curious why Jeff Beck would dedicate "'Cause We've Ended As Lovers" from Blow By Blow to Buchanan, would do themselves a favor by picking up this album. Roy Buchanan's Second Album (1974) was recorded less than six months after completing his self-titled major-label debut, Roy Buchanan (1972), and sported a slightly amended version of the Snakestretchers -- featuring Ned Davis (drums), Dick Heintze (keyboards), Teddy Irwin (rhythm guitar), Chuck Tilley (vocals/rhythm guitar), and, replacing Pete Van Allen, Don Payne (bass). The vibe is much in keeping with the previous effort, albeit decidedly more blues-based. Likewise, the arguably misplaced countrified cuts have been dispensed with, as the musicians concentrate more specifically on traditional blues and original compositions. Once again, the choice of covers is not only impeccable, but has been significantly personalized by the guitarist's unique sensibilities and inimitable timbre. "Five String Blues" leads the pack, revealing the meticulous craftsmanship that Buchanan places upon each intonation, as his precision is never obscured within the flurry of unleashed notes. While less technical than emotive, Buchanan's gift for interpretation is nothing short of spellbinding, as the reading of Erskine Hawkins' "After Hours" demonstrates. "Tribute to Elmore James" is an R&B-laden rocker with copious nods to James' slide fretwork as well as Buchanan's own well-placed emphasis. Yet another facet to this aggregate is the funkier midtempo "I Won't Tell You No Lies." Sadly, the Snakestretchers tenure concludes on this LP. Lindsey Planer, AMG

ROBERT CALVERT - Captain Lockheed And The Starfighters (BGO 05; UK) A solo performer and the space-rock band Hawkwind's "resident poet," Robert Calvert was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1945. His first solo album from 1974, Lockheed remains something of an overlooked landmark for the backing musicians alone. Besides assorted Hawkwind types and associates like author Michael Moorcock, other sorts from Brian Eno and producer Roy Thomas Baker to dyed-in-the-wool English musical nutters like Arthur Brown and ex-Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band member Viv Stanshall, lead participant on the weird and wooly "dialogues" peppered throughout, make an appearance. The latter's ranting German-accented performance on the opening snippet, "Franz Joseph Strauss," sounds like someone escaped from an insane asylum, while his more-English-than-thou bits on the other parts are just as gone: check out "Board Meeting" and "Ground Control" for quick but effective examples. If not quite as space rock/trip-out as Hawkwind itself, Calvert brings a lot of that band's chugging, freak-out atmosphere to the fore, while his own vocals, when they appear, are, a touch surprisingly, fairly cool and calm in comparison. The occasionally explicit nods surface more than once; there's talk about a "silver machine" on "The Aerospaceage Inferno," while one can tell Dave Brock and Lemmy are playing guitar and bass almost by default. Similarly, the sax player could only be Nik Turner. The whole album allegedly is something of a concept story about said captain and the sleek combat planes he flies (the Starfighters being a type of plane used by the US Air Force in the '60s), but even without the story at work it's still a trip. There's the aggressively tweaked vocals on "The Right Stuff," which with what sounds like Eno on keyboards sends things halfway to the freaked-out zone of prime Roxy Music. "The Song of the Gremlin, Pt. 1," meanwhile, has an introduction that Ween must have assuredly heard somewhere along the way, it's that completely crazy. Well worth searching out. - Ned Raggett, AMG

ROBERT CALVERT - Lucky Leif And The Longships (BGO 02; UK) Robert Calvert was space-rock band Hawkwind's "resident poet". His second solo album followed in the conceptual footsteps of its predecessor, this time extrapolating upon the Viking discovery of America to picture a nation that retained its Norse characteristics to the exclusion of all others. It is a vivacious scenario, as vivid in the churning psychedelic primitivism of "Storm Chant of the Skraelings" as in the ultra-modern Beach Boys parody "Lay of the Surfers" (key lyric: "bar bar barbarians"), while the liner notes are punctuated with enough historical interjections to firmly establish the outline of the tale. Backed by what amounts to a British underground supergroup, including the Pink Fairies' Paul Rudolph, Hawkwind's Nik Turner, and author Michael Moorcock, all bound together by Brian Eno's crystalline production, Lucky Leif is a far cry from the jam-heavy miasma of Calvert's earlier work with Hawkwind. Indeed, the reliance on tight song structures predicts the vast sea change that Calvert would wreak on the Hawkwind mothership following his return in 1976, while anybody schooled in the joys of Eno's own first two solo albums will certainly find much to rejoice in here. From hot Viking calypso-jazz ("Volstead O Vodeo Do") to apocalyptic metal-funk ("Ragna Rock"), Lucky Leif conjures the entire spread of modern music -- elsewhere in the cycle, "Magical Potion" offers a throbbing variation on the old "Willie and the Hand Jive" riff, while "Moonshine in the Mountain" is as sh*t-kicking country-colored as such a title demands. Only the multi-layered spoken-word incantation "The Making of Midgard" and the radio-dial dynamics of "Phase Locked Loop" truly jar the album's continuity, but even those flaws are promptly remedied by "Brave New World," a triumphal ballad with a chorus to make your toes curl. With its cover portrait of the Statue of Liberty clad in a Viking helmet and a dragon ship flying the Stars and Stripes, with both the Indian wars and Prohibition raising their own ugly heads in the narrative, the ultimate point appears to be that American history itself would have remained much the same no matter who colonized the country first. But the hats, at least, would have been a lot more interesting. Dave Thompson, AMG

CANNED HEAT - Living The Blues [2 CD set] (BGO 591; UK) Some have dismissed Canned Heat's third album Living the Blues (1968), primarily owing to the nearly three-quarter-hour long "Refried Boogie" jam that inhabits the second half of the effort. However, that did not stop it from scoring in the Top 20, which was not bad for a double LP. One obvious reason for its accomplishments is that the remainder of the title continues in the same solid vein as their previous LP, Boogie With Canned Heat (1968), issued merely a few months earlier. The quintet of Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar/vocals), Larry "The Mole" Taylor (bass), Henry "Sunflower" Vestine (guitar), Aldolfo "Fido" Dela Parra (drums), and Bob "The Bear" Hite (vocals) return with the same aggressive blend of amplified rock with rhythm and blues. They also churn out some impressive self-penned tunes, as well as unique derivations of tunes, such as their interpretation of Charley Patton's "Pony Blues." Immediately the inspired interplay between Wilson and Vestine proves as successful a combination here as it had on the band's prior outings. Expanding beyond their own formidable instrumental prowess, British blues guitarist John Mayall sits in -- on piano no less -- for a short yet effective rendition of Jimmie Rodgers' "Walking by Myself." Augmenting the combo on the original "Boogie Music" is another rising ivory-tickler known to many as the "Gris-gris man," and still to others as Mac Rebennack. However, it's Dr. John under which the Creole-based pianist garnered the most attention. "One Kind Favor" [aka "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean"] is another standard that is given a decidedly modern workout. The sidelong, nine-movement epic "Parthenogenesis" is an experimental suite that allows each band member copious room to move. Among the more interesting sections include the respective sonic trademark of guitarist John Fahey, who backs up Wilson's Jew's harp twangfest on "Nebulosity," as well as the return of Mayall on "Bear Wires," the latter being a sly play on the title of Mayall's concurrent platter, Bare Wires (1968). - Lindsay Planer, AMG

MATTHEW FISHER - Journey's End/"I'll Be There" (BGO 505; UK) First and second albums on 1 CD! Organist Matthew Fisher was born in 1946. He was a founding member of Procol Harum and has been with the band throughout most of their history. He also served as producer on several of Procol bandmate Robin Trower's albums. He has also managed to release quite a few solo albums during the years. Following his departure from Procol Harum, Matthew Fisher surfaced with this solo effort, 1973's Journey's End, which showed some promise. While his nasal vocals are not up to par with his previous bandmate's, they are pleasant enough not to intrude upon the songs in a bad way. Highlights include "Suzanne" and the title cut, parts one and two. A bold, impressive solo outing, quickly followed up by 'I'll Be There' -James Chrispell and Gary Hill, AMG

GNIDROLOG - In Spite Of Harry's Toe-Nail/Lady Lake [2 CD set] (BGO 637; UK) Twin brothers Stewart and Colin Goldring formed the group Gnidrolog in the late '60s after having worked together in various musical projects throughout the years. Here are the first two of three albums in one package. Gnidrolog are one of the more overlooked bands that took part in the progressive rock explosion in Britain around 1971-73. Intricate band, with an ecletic music that is very hard to categorize. Their music is a blend of blusy prog, with horn instruments, and intense vocals on top of it. They might appeal to Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull and Van Der Graaf fans. "In Spite of Harry's Toenail" showed their progressive rock leanings quite well, and better yet, their opus "Lady Lake" will bowl you over.

DAVE GREENSLADE - The Pentateuch of the Cosmogony (BGO 170; UK) Dave Greenslade keyboardist leader of the of the art-rock group Greenslade composed and released the ambitious Pentateuch of the Cosmogony (often seen just as Pentateuch; the CD edition trims a couple minutes of music but preserves the artwork) in 1979. This double LP was created in association with artist Patrick Woodroffe, whose fantasy artwork inspired Greenslade's music, which was performed on Greenslade's ever-expanding arsenal of electronic keyboards. Originally the 2 LPs were packaged in pockets of a lavish hardcover book. That beautiful book is completely reproduced here [in smaller size of course]

HELP YOURSELF - Help Yourself/Beware The Shadow (BGO 385; UK) First and third albums on 1 CD! Help Yourself was formed in the London area of England in 1970 initially as a backup band for Malcolm Morley, who was signed as a solo act under the management of the Famepushers whose acts Brinsley Schwarz and Ernie Graham had also secured contracts with the U.K. division of United Artists/Liberty Records. The band consisted of Richard Treece (guitars/vocals/harmonica), Dave Charles (drums/percussion/vocals), Ken Whaley (bass), and of course Malcolm Morley (guitars/keyboards/vocals). Help Yourself recorded their debut self-titled album in early 1971. The songs on that album were completely written by Morley. Ken Whaley left the band after the debut to be replaced by Ernie Graham (guitars), who had just released his solo album on Liberty. Help Yourself was experiencing some financial difficulties at this time, as were a number of other bands in England, so they teamed up with bandmembers from Brinsley Schwarz and moved into a rented house in Headley in 1971/1972 called the Grange, where Led Zeppelin had recorded the Symbols album earlier that year. While at the Grange, the band recorded the second album Strange Affair, [found on BGO 452] released in early 1972, with the addition of Graham and Jonathan (Jojo) Glemser to the band. Graham and Glesmer left during the recording of Strange Affair and were replaced by Paul Burton for the completion of the album. The lineup of Burton, Morley, Treece, and Charles recorded another album almost immediately, called Beware of the Shadow, which was released at the end of 1972. The Helps, as they were called by fans, appealed to a hippie audience and found moderate success in the U.S., where they appealed to Deadheads and fans of such bands as Quicksilver. Graham and Glesmer left during the recording of Strange Affair and were replaced by Paul Burton for the completion of the album. 'Beware The Shadow' was recorded next [found on BGO 385] In 1973, original bassist Ken Whaley returned to the band and the Helps recorded an album that was appropriately called, The Return of Ken Whaley. The initial release of that album contained a "bonus" album called Happy Days, which was recorded live on tour with the Flying Aces. Shortly after the release of The Return of Ken Whaley, Help Yourself broke up. Malcolm Morley went on to join the Welsh band Man, with Ken Whaley later joining him there. JO-ANN KELLEY - Jo-Ann Kelley (BGO 429; UK) The rock era saw a few white female singers, like Janis Joplin, show they could sing the blues. But one who could outshine them all -- Jo Ann Kelly -- seemed to slip through the cracks, mostly because she favored the acoustic, Delta style rather than rocking out with a heavy band behind her. But with a huge voice, and a strong guitar style influenced by Memphis Minnie and Charley Patton, she was the queen. Born January 5, 1944, Kelly and her older brother Dave were both taken by the blues, and born at the right time to take advantage of a young British blues scene in the early '60s. By 1964 she was playing in clubs, including the Star in Croydon, and had made her first limited-edition record with future Groundhogs guitarist Tony McPhee. She expanded to play folk and blues clubs all over Britain, generally solo, but occasionally with other artists, bringing together artists like Bessie Smith and Sister Rosetta Tharpe into her own music. After the first National Blues Federation Convention in 1968 her career seemed ready to take flight. She began playing the more lucrative college circuit, followed by this well-received debut album in 1969. At the second National Blues Convention, she jammed with Canned Heat, who invited her to join them on a permanent basis. She declined, not wanting to be a part of a band -- and made the same decision when Johnny Winter offered to help her. Chris Nickson, AMG

LIVERPOOL SCENE - Amazing Adventures Of../Bread On The Night [2 CD set] (BGO 538; UK) The first Liverpool Scene consisted of the three poets Roger McGough, Brian Patten and Adrian Henri, with music supplied by guitarist Andy Roberts. The two albums featured here are now available for the first time as a double CD. The group that performs on these records - originally released on the RCA label - is more of a regular rock group, although it is still one that tends to act as an umbrella for the individual talent beneath: Henri and Roberts as before, with poet/saxophonist Mike Evans and singer/guitarist Mike Hart also making telling contributions Produced by John Peel (Amazing Adventures Of) and Sandy Robertson & Liverpool Scene (Bread On The Night), each album is tremendously varied, encompassing rock, jazz and folk together with poetry, comedy and drama - a real pot-pourri, in fact, but it works exceptionally well. Full 2001 sleevenotes from noted writer and broadcaster Spencer Leigh Track Listing

STREETWALKERS - Downtown Flyers (BGO 542; UK) This is the second album [the first was released a Chapman/Whitney record called 'Streetwalkers'] from the post-Family band formed by Family masterminds Roger Chapman and Charlie Whitney. Where their former band balanced art-rock and blues-rock, the Streetwalkers were a throwback, a blues-rock band that put Chapman's extraordinary voice front and center. Where they remained consistent with their former aggregation was that the Streetwalkers, though popular in England, were virtually ignored in America. A solid, at times excellent live band.

STREETWALKERS - Live (BGO 606; UK) Streetwalkers were formed by Roger Chapman and Charlie Whitney after the demise of their band Family. Streetwalkers were a blues-rock band that brought Chapman's extraordinary voice to the fore. This 1977 double-album set was not released in the US

ROBIN TROWER - For Earth Below/Live (BGO 347; UK) 2 LPs complete on 1 CD. Robin Trower's third album, 1975's For Earth Below is less consistent than the previous two but still contains much excellent material; the Beat Goes On label's reissue teams it with 1976's Live, a truly fine set recorded in Sweden. With James Dewar on bass and vocals, and Bill Lordan on drums. Liner note by Robert Fripp.
CD for $16
ROBIN TROWER - Long Misty Days/In City Dreams (BGO 349; UK) 2 LPs complete on 1 CD. A good mix of down-and-dirty blues, 1976's Long Misty Days also features Trower's ethereal ballads. Its 1977 follow-up In City Dreams -- also included on this two-fer -- is slightly funkier than the previous albums, but still highlighted by a delicate ballad, "Bluebird" and the majestic title track. With James Dewar on bass and vocals, and Bill Lordan on drums; liner note by Robert Fripp
CD for $16
ROBIN TROWER - Twice Removed From Yesterday/Bridge Of Sighs (BGO 339; UK) 2 LPs complete on 1 CD. Robin Trower's first two [and best] albums, Twice Removed from Yesterday and Bridge of Sighs, with James Dewar on bass and vocals, and Bill Lordan on drums; liner note by Robert Fripp

NEW WINDS [ROBERT DICK/J D PARRAN/NED ROTHENBERG] - The Cliff (Sound Aspects 25; Germany) New Winds is/are Robert Dicks on flutes, Ned Rothenberg on alto sax and JD Parran on clarinets. They have been around since the mid-eighties and still exist (with Herb Robertson replacing JD), but play on rare occasions, as Robert Dick has only come back to the US in 2002 after many years in Switzerland. "The Cliff" was recorded in 1986

NEW WINDS [ROBERT DICK/J D PARRAN/NED ROTHENBERG] - Traction (Sound Aspects 44; Germany) Amazing wind (flutes and saxes) featuring Robert Dick on various flutes, Ned Rothenberg on alto sax, bass clarinet, shakuhachi & ocarina and JD Parran on clarinets, soprano sax and flutes. Superb studio effort from 1991.

A SPENCER BAREFIELD/OLIVER LAKE/ANDREW CYRILLE - Live At Leverkusener Jazztage (Sound Aspects 039; Germany) Featuring Spencer on classical guitar with sympathetic strings & 12-string acoustic guitars (w/ pick-ups), Oliver Lake on alto & soprano saxes and Andrew Cyrille on drums, with each musician contributing pieces. Excellent live recording from a German gig in October of 1989. Spencer Barefield's songs are often delicate and lovely, without being too mellow or melodic due to some sax playing by Mr. Lake. Oliver writes a bit more gnarly tunes that go through a variety of odd twists and turns. Andrew's "Shell" swings softly with Oliver spinning quickly on top and Spencer providing dreamy guitar underneath, while Cyrille's "Akan V" has a somewhat funky groove, with a joyous soprano solo from Mr. Lake. Spencer's epic length work, "In Between", features long and intricate solos the guitar and the soprano sax. Quite a strong and diverse trio offering to savor.

ROOM [CHRIS BROWN/LARRY OCHS/WILLIAM WINANT] - Room (Sound Aspects 28; Germany) Featuring The Hub's Chris Brown on piano & electronics; Larry Ochs from Rova on tenor and sopranino saxes and the wonderful William Winant on vibraphone & percussion. Very strong trio date recorded at Mills College in December of 1987. Considering I've only heard Chris Brown playing electronics with The Hub and for Leo Smith, turns out that he is also a fine avant pianist. It is always a treat to hear percussion hero Willie Winant performing Zorn's classical pieces and recently doing some Zorn improv nights and yes he surprised us all when was barking and screaming and rolling around on the Tonic stage. Here both Winant (playing solo percussion and vibes) and Ochs (playing solo tenor sax) with a strange inter-active computer creating subtle alien worlds. This trio sounds much closer to contemporary classical than modern jazz in their most careful execution of selective sounds. "Postmortem" is an epic-like piece for saxes, piano and percussion and is a subtle, focused and well written journey through different acoustic textures and terrain.

JASON HWANG/MARK DRESSER/GEOFFREY GORDON - Unfolding Stone (Sound Aspects 41; Germany) This is (Far East Side Band's) violinist Hwang's trio with Mark Dresser on acoustic bass and Geoffrey Gordon on drums, with guests Ned Rothenberg & J D Parran on flutes and Wilson Moorman on vibes & marimba. Jason Hwang has always been one of downtown's best and most inventive violinists, yet his recordings are all too rare. Although he has been collaborating with William Hooker recently, recordings under his own name are nearly impossible to find. This gem is from 1990, but I can't recall ever seeing it back then. Both Jason and Mark do a lot of bent bowing, complimenting each other's strange strings. The music here is a soundtrack for Franklin Backu's film 'Source', based on a Isamu Naguchi sculpture garden. Geoffrey Gordon provides great ritualistic percussion, mostly cymbals, gongs and drums. Jason's violin often cries out and has its own unique and distinctive sound. The final piece is the title track and features some haunting flutes by Ned and JD and is pretty quietly cosmic.
CD for $17 (Out of print, but we have it!)
HANS KOCH/MARTIN SCHUTZ/MARCO KAPPELI - The Art Of The Staccato (Sound Aspects 33; Germany) If you've ever heard the [now OOP] ECM recording by these guys, you know darnn well why they are absolutely essential. Koch: bass clarinet, tenor and soprano saxes; Schutz: elec. 5 string cello; Kappeli: drums
CD for $17 (Out of print, but we have it!)
AND ALSO COPIES OF THESE TWO ITM RARITIES...
MARILYN MAZUR SEXTET with Guests CHRIS McGREGOR/PETER KOWALD/HARRY BECKETT - Grandmothers Teaching (ITM 1428; Germany) Drummer Marilyn Mazur's Sextet [Jan Kazda on bass, Tobias Becker on keyboards, H P Salentin on trumpets, Wolfgang Schmidtke on saxes, Ludwig Gotz on trombone] with guest soloists Chris MacGregor on piano, Peter Kowald on contrabass and Harry Beckett on trumpet & flugel, performing compositions by McGregor, Johnny Dyani, and Harry Beckett! Even with some drum machine and funky slapping bass, this is still a fun CD. Brotherhood of Breath trumpet hero, Harry Beckett, always solos as if his life depended upon it and pulls off some a few inspired solos. Fretless electric bassist, Jan Kazda, who appeared on that 'No Material' cd, has a warm tone and Kowald adds his disarming bowed bass here and there. Head BoB bandleader, pianist & composer, Chris McGregor, adds his magical piano and arrangement of his own gem, "Maxine", which is a lovely duo with Harry Beckett. Overall, that righteous South African, jazz/gospel vibe is at the center of this mostly great offering.
CD for $15 7 for 6 SALE.
CHRIS McGREGOR'S BROTHERHOOD OF BREATH - Chris McGregor Memorial Concert (ITM 970086; Germany) Everyone from the last edition of the Brotherhood of Breath before McGregor died is here on this wonderfully played and well-recorded concert, which includes horn players - Harry Beckett, Annie Whitehead, Dave Defries & Peter Volpe; on reeds - Julian Arguelles & Steve Williamson, Gilbert Matthews on drums and Thomas Dyani on percussion plus Roland Perrin in Chris' piano chair. All of the fine tunes here were composed by Blue Notes & Brotherhood of Breath's two main writers - Chris McGregor and Dudu Pukwana. This fantastic 16-piece big band captures the inventive spirit, inner fire and massive powerful of the legendary Brotherhood of Breath, without going too far overboard into the free sections that the BoB sometimes ended up in. Lots of inspired solos, enchanting songs and great arrangements abound here.
